Man United cash boost, Spurs identify Ange replacement, PL coach to Championship

Cash-strapped Manchester United could be set for a much-needed multi-million pound windfall – thanks to former striker Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood has been banging in goals for fun since leaving Man United to join Roberto de Zerbi’s Marseille last summer.

The ex-England international’s hot streak of 14 goals in 22 games for the French outfit has alerted some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including the likes of PSG and Barcelona.

When United traded Greenwood with Marseille for £26.6miliion they insisted on an unusually high 50 per cent sell-on clause.

With the 23-year-old now valued at around £60m, that means United would bank in the region of £16.5m from any sale.

At a time when Sir Jim Ratcliffe is cutting costs to raise vital transfer funds, that money would come in very handy for struggling boss Ruben Amorim.

    Bournemouth stars (and boss) wanted

Bournemouth are braced for a summer battle to keep several of their star men, and manager Andoni Iraola!

The Cherries are enjoying the season of their lifetime and currently sit in fifth place in the Premier League, likely to be enough to secure a spot in the Champions League.

Their incredible rise up the table has not gone unnoticed with centre-back Dean Huijsen, who is believed to have a £50m release clause in his contract, attracting attention from Liverpool and Chelsea.

Left-back Milos Kerkez is another Cherries star on the radar of a number of top clubs, including Manchester United, along with fleet-footed forward Antoine Semenyo, who has admirers at Newcastle.

Then there is miracle-working gaffer Iraola, who talkSPORT understands would be at the top of Tottenham’s list if they parted company with Ange Postecoglou, who is under pressure with Spurs down in 12th.

With Iraola preferring to sign short-term deals and only contracted until the end of next season that could leave Bournemouth vulnerable, although sources close to the Spaniard say he is happy on the Dorset coast.

    Why Mitoma rejected Saudi revealed

Kaoru Mitoma is a rare breed in modern football, a player who puts ambition before money.

The Brighton winger was subject of a shock £74m bid from Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr in the final days of the transfer widow.

But even if the Seagulls were tempted to cash in on their Japanese international, which they were reluctant to do, talkSPORT has been told he immediately rebuffed the notion of moving to the Middle East.

That’s because the humble 27-year-old, who could have set himself up financially for life by linking up with Cristiano Ronaldo, has his sights set on one day playing in the Champions League.

What the Saudi interest has achieved is to strengthen Brighton’s bargaining position when an elite Premier League or European club do come calling by driving up his asking price.

After being compared to Arsenal’s Dutch maestro Dennis Bergkamp following his stunning goal of the season contender against Chelsea, there is every chance the big boys could come calling.

Spurs coach wanted by Championship club

Swansea could turn to Ryan Mason in their hunt for a new manager.

Tottenham assistant coach Mason was high on the Swans’ wanted list before they appointed Luke Williams in January last year.

And after deciding to give Williams the boot after a run of eight defeats from their last ten games, the ex-England midfielder still has admirers among the Welsh club’s hierarchy.

Mason also held talks with Anderlecht in October before deciding to stay at Spurs, so it remains to be seen if he is willing to leave now.

As talkSPORT reported on Monday, former Oxford boss Des Buckingham is also among the front-runners to replace the sacked Williams.

However, this notebook understands Russell Martin has no interest in a return to South Wales.

West Ham are interested in signing Marseille striker Elye Wahi, talkSPORT understands.

Wahi, who only signed for his current club from Lens last summer, is valued at around £25million.

The 22-year-old has scored three goals in 14 appearances for the club but made only seven starts in Ligue 1 this season.

West Ham also have Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi on their radar following Niclas Fullkrug’s recent injury.

talkSPORT understands Fullkrug is set to be ruled out for three months with a hamstring injury he sustained in their FA Cup defeat against Aston Villa.

Awoniyi was Forest’s top scorer in their Premier League comeback season in the 2022/23 campaign with ten goals.

However, he has only netted a further seven since, with the striker missing a large chunk of action due to injuries last year.

The 27-year-old has played just 382 minutes under Nuno Espirito Santo this season and made only two Premier League starts.

His first and only goal of the campaign came off the bench in their 3-0 league win away at Wolves last week.

West Ham currently have one fit striker in their squad, with Danny Ings being brought on for Fullkrug in the FA Cup defeat at Villa.

Speaking on the injured German, head coach Graham Potter said on Monday: “It’s fair to say it’s a significant one.

“Anybody watching the game, when a player pulls up like that you know that something fairly serious has happened.

“So it’s still early in terms of full diagnosis I would suggest, but nevertheless a significant one, a number of weeks.

“Will it be months? A number of weeks probably adds up to months, yes. So yeah, I would say that.”

The Hammers are also without Michail Antonio as he is recovering from a broken leg he sustained in a horror car crash last month.

Club captain Jarrod Bowen is another attacking absence for West Ham with a fractured foot.

West Ham have endured a tough season which saw Julen Lopetegui sacked as manager last week.

They are 14th in the Premier League table, seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Neal Maupay causes X-rated reaction from Tony Bellew as striker trolls Everton

Neal Maupay may still be contracted to Everton – but he couldn’t help but stick the knife in following the club’s defeat to Nottingham Forest.

The French striker is currently on loan at Ligue 1 giants Marseille, which will become a permanent stay next summer.

    6

Marseille’s on-loan striker Maupay has taken a swipe at parent club Everton on social mediaCredit: Getty

Maupay has endured a disappointing time at Everton after joining from Brighton in 2022.

He scored just one goal in 29 games in all competitions for the Toffees during the 2022/23 campaign.

He was then shipped off on loan to Brentford the following campaign, before being offloaded yet again earlier this year.

The 28-year-old has featured regularly under Roberto De Zerbi in France – helping his side sit second in the table.

He has been directly involved in six goals from 11 Ligue 1 matches to show Everton what they are missing.

In contrast, Everton are struggling this season as they sit 16th in the Premier League table – just two points above the relegation zone following Sunday’s home defeat to Forest, which saw Chris Wood and Morgan Gibbs-White seal a 2-0 triumph for them.

And Maupay looked to rub salt in the wounds of Everton fans as he mocked their loss on social media.

Living up to his pantomime villain reputation, Maupay joked on X: “Whenever I’m having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile.”

It’s safe to say that Everton supporters were left fuming by his post, with former WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew simply writing: “P****.”

Another X user said: “In our hall of fame for one of the worst players to put on a blue shirt.”

Meanwhile this fan wrote: “Next time you play Everton you’re going to get snapped. That will pipe you right down.”

His comment drew a response from Maupay, who replied by saying: “See you in the Champions League next season!”

He then followed it up by making a further joke at Everton’s expense.

Correcting his previous post, Maupay simply stated, ‘Championship,’ highlighting the relegation battle the Toffees are involved in.

It’s not the first time this season that Maupay has caused the ire of Everton fans.

Prior to his loan to Marseille, Maupay was on the bench for the club’s heavy defeats to Brighton and Tottenham.

Following Everton’s 4-0 hammering at Spurs, Maupay was one of several players that were targeted with abuse by supporters at a London train station.

In a video that went viral, Maupay appeared to react to the shouts of ‘f*** off’ from one particular supporter.

He then shared the clip in question on social media, where he said: “Imagine another job where it’s normalised to get abuse like this.

“Hanging around at a train station to scream at men who are trying their best…”

And following his recent social media activity, it’s safe to say there’s no love lost between the player and the Everton fanbase.

Dyche’s future revealed, United target teenager, Spurs’ failed striker pursuit

Everton’s proposed takeover by Daniel Friedkin is set to hand under-pressure Sean Dyche a stay of execution – at least in the short term.

Dyche could be forgiven for fearing the sack after current owner Farhad Moshiri agreed on Monday to sell his shares to Friedkin after the American brutally axed Roma legend Daniele De Rossi.

    4

The Italian’s termination at the Stadio Olimpico comes just four games into the season, prompting fierce criticism from former players including Paolo Di Canio.

But talkSPORT understands Friedkin intends to follow the example of Sir Jim Ractliffe by conducting a thorough performance review of the Toffees.

This includes manager Dyche with Friedkin keen to not rush into any knee-jerk decisions following Everton’s poor start to the season.

If Dyche fails to convince he can turn their fortunes around after taking just one point from their first five games, ex-Everton boss David Moyes is expected to be considered for a return to the Toffees hot-seat.

The Scot is keen to get back to work after leaving West Ham
at the end of last season.

Ex-Chelsea and Brighton chief Graham Potter and recently-departed England boss Gareth Southgate are other potential targets.

    He’s our Man

Manchester United are ready to step up their interest in Sunderland whiz-kid Chris Rigg.

United are among a number of Premier League clubs who have been following the progress of the 17-year-old, who is widely considered as the best youngster to emerge in the Championship since Jude Bellingham.

The Tyneside-born midfielder only enhanced that reputation by scoring a stunning solo goal in Saturday’s derby win over Middlesbrough at the Stadium of Light.

Sources close to Rigg have told talkSPORT that United could make their move for Rigg as early as the January transfer window to fend off competition from rivals including Newcastle.

    In your Face

Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface went viral after an outrageous double nutmeg followed by a no-look pass helped set up a goal in Bayer Leverkusen’s Champions League thrashing of Feyenoord last week.

The Nigerian could have been showing those silky skills in a Tottenham shirt had this summer’s transfer window worked out differently.

Enzo Maresca bemoans Chelsea star Mykhailo Mudryk’s lack of consistency after his perfomance against Servette in the Europa Conference League

talkSPORT understands Spurs approached Leverkusen over Boniface’s availability, before signing Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth for a club-record £65million fee.

If the 23-year-old keeps pulling off pieces of magic like we witnessed in Rotterdam, then Tottenham won’t be the only Premier League club on his trail, particularly with the global dearth of forwards.

Leverkusen are braced for interest and value Boniface around the £50m mark.

    Stuck in the Mud

Mykhailo Mudryk is determined to battle for his Chelsea future.

The 23-year-old is in danger of becoming the Blues’ forgotten man following the summer signings of Pedro Neto, Joao Felix and Jadon Sancho.

But the Ukrainian, who has started just one Premier League game under new manager Enzo Maresca, still believes he can be a success at Stamford Bridge.

talkSPORT has been told Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali is desperate for Mudryk to come good after leading the charge to sign him from Shakhtar Donetsk in a deal worth up to £88.5m.

If Chelsea did consider cashing in on Mudryk then his former Shakhtar boss, now at Marseille, Roberto De Zerbi remains a big admirer, having touted him as a potential Ballon d’Or winner.

  • Greenwood makes instant impact within three minutes of Marseille debut

Greenwood makes instant impact within three minutes of Marseille debut

Mason Greenwood began his career away from Manchester United by scoring two goals on his debut for new club Marseille.

The striker needed just three minutes to open his account for the French club, and he will be hoping his fast start to life in Ligue 1 will help win over some of the fans who were left unhappy about his arrival.

Greenwood’s move from Old Trafford this summer led to a backlash from a section of the Marseille support, as well as the city’s mayor.

The 22-year-old has spent the last year rebuilding his life and career, having gone from potential superstar to being suspended by United after his arrest on suspicion of rape, assault and making threats to kill in January 2022.

Those charges were ultimately dropped in February 2023, but after an internal investigation into the striker’s conduct it was decided it would be best for Greenwood to ‘continue his career away from Old Trafford’.

The forward spent last season on loan at Getafe, managing ten goals and six assists in 36 games for the Spanish club.

He was linked with a return to Spain in a permanent transfer this summer, but Marseille – now managed by former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi – got a deal done to the tune of £26.7million [€30m], with United including a hefty sell-on clause.

The deal upset some fans of the French outfit, with the mayor of Marseille urging the club to reconsider and pull out of the transfer, telling French media: “I do not want my club to be covered in shame.”

Despite the protests, club officials went ahead with the move, with Greenwood given the No.10 shirt.

And it appears the football decision worked out for them as Greenwood took no time at all to make an impact on the pitch in Saturday’s season opener against Brest.

Bursting down the right wing, the Englishman sprinted into the box with the ball and sent a fierce shot into the bottom left corner of the net with only three minutes on the clock.

He then scored again from the penalty spot to give himself a debut brace on the 30 minute mark, as Marseille went into half-time 3-1 up.

As well as Greenwood, it was also a good start to the season for De Zerbi, who took the job with the French club after his shock departure from Brighton at the end of last season, citing ‘unfair things’.

The coach recently spoke out about the decision to sign Greenwood and clarified previous comments made to French media that he had no idea about the forward’s past.

He also revealed the warning he gave to the player upon Greenwood’s arrival this summer.

Ally McCoist and Emile Heskey claim Marcus Rashford needs a big season and back the Manchester United star to prove doubters wrong

‘I didn’t defend him,” De Zerbi told L’Equipe. “I said that when a player becomes my player, I’m the first to pin him to the wall if he makes a mistake.

“But with regards to the outside world, I’ll always defend him as I would defend my son.

“The personal question does not enter into my reasoning, I know what Pablo Longoria [Marseille president] did beforehand, all the information he collected on Greenwood.

“The club took every precaution before making the decision.

“I spoke with his father, who must be the same age as me. I warned him about the demands of the club, telling him, ‘OM is OM’, and he replied: ‘ remember the historic Marseille, which played in the European Cup finals’.”

Arsenal could miss out on £23million windfall as Marseille close in on striker

Arsenal’s reluctance to budge from their demands for Eddie Nketiah may have backfired.

The Gunners striker has been the subject to multiple bids from French giants Marseille with Roberto De Zerbi a huge admirer of the 25-year-old.

    2

It is understood that the centre-forward would be willing to make the move to the Stade Velodrome in his quest to play regular first team football.

Marseille had lodged a £17million offer for Nketiah last month, which was immediately rebuffed by the north London giants.

And on Friday, an improved offer of £23m was knocked back by Mikel Arteta’s men.

According to transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are adamant they will only only entertain offers in excess of £30m.

The Italian reporter has also stated that the Premier League title contenders will insist on a sell-on clause in any deal for the one-cap England international.

Having stated that Marseille would now look at new options as they mull over making a third offer, Romano then stated the Ligue 1 outfit are closing in on another forward.

It has been said that Marseille are set to sign Borussia Dortmund starlet Youssoufa Moukoko on an initial loan transfer.

The deal is claimed to include a buy option, with the 19-year-old agreeing terms with the nine-time French champions.

What Moukoko’s arrival at Marseille means for their pursuit of Nketiah remains to be seen.

But they have already brought in versatile forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United to bolster their attack.

Ex-Arsenal skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who spent last season at Marseille, has revealed he has urged his former teammate to make the switch across the English Channel.

A fan asked the Gabon international on social media to ‘tell Nketiah to come to Marseille’.

To which the 2020 FA Cup winner simply said: “Already done.”

Nketiah could be one of many Hale End graduates from Arsenal’s academy to be sold this summer.

On Friday, Emile Smith Rowe’s £34million transfer to Fulham was confirmed after the midfielder was restricted to just three Premier League starts in the last two years.

Meanwhile winger Reiss Nelson also faces an uncertain future as he too looks to be a regular starter.

And Arsenal have already seen academy starlet Chido Obi-Martin leave London Colney, with Manchester United closing in on the signing of the 16-year-old striker.

Manchester United have reached an agreement with the French side for the forward in a deal worth £26.7million.

talkSPORT understands it will also include a 50 per cent sell-on clause for the Red Devils on any future sale.

However, it’s understood that personal terms on a transfer are yet to be completed.

Greenwood spent last season on loan with Spanish club Getafe as he looks to rebuild his life and career.

The forward was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape, assault and making threats to kill after images and videos surfaced online.

He was then suspended by the club but denied all allegations.

All charges were then dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023 due to ‘a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material’.

However, United still conducted an internal investigation, with Greenwood leaving the club on loan having not played for them since January 2022. It was mutually agreed that Greenwood should continue his career away from Old Trafford.

While a move to Marseille has been agreed, the city’s mayor, Benoit Payan, has condemned the move and said he will be speaking to the club’s president to urge him to pull out of the deal.

Speaking to French radio station RMC, Payan made a number of accusations and said: “I do not want my club to be covered in shame. It is not acceptable.”

Greenwood scored 35 goals in 129 games for Man United, as well as 10 in 36 while at Getafe.

He returned to Manchester at the end of last season and it was unclear where he would be playing this season.

The club began their pre-season training on Monday, but Greenwood did not take part though is thought to have met senior figures within the club to work out his next move.

These included new sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox. There was interest from Serie A as talkSPORT reported, but it is the south of France where he is heading.

United are also set to receive 50 per cent of any future sale.

The 22-year-old had also attracted strong interest from Lazio, Napoli and Juventus as well as clubs in Spain, Germany and Portugal.

Everton close in on signing of forward who stunned Tottenham

Everton are close to agreeing a deal with Marseille for former Sheffield United forward Iliman Ndiaye, talkSPORT understands.

The French giants are hoping to recoup the majority of the £20million they paid Sheffield United last summer.

    2

After four years, with the Blades, including two stunning Championship campaigns, Ndiaye swapped Brammall Lane for the Stade Velodrome last summer.

However, after just three goals and three assists in 19 starts and 11 substitute appearances in Ligue 1, he looks set to return to England.

Ndiaye had great success with the Blades, who he joined from Boreham Wood in 2019.

A breakout campaign in 2022/23 saw him become a mainstay in Paul Heckingbotham’s team the next season.

His 14 goals and ten assists in the Championship secured them second place and promotion to the Premier League.

Ndiaye also helped Sheffield United cause an FA Cup shock as his goal gave them a 1-0 fifth round victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

And while devastated to let the player go, the Blades conceded they could do nothing to stop him.

“It’s his boyhood club, his dream club,” said Heckingbotham at the time.

“That’s the battle we were up against. That’s the problem. Iliman turned down vast amounts of money last January to stay with us and help us get promoted so it’s not about the money.”

But that was despite the club reportedly filming a video that announced he was signing a new deal and being given the No.10 shirt, previously worn by club legend Billy Sharp.

Everton seem intent on doing their business early this season.

They have already signed Tim Iroegbunam from Aston Villa and secured Jack Harrison on loan from Leeds for a second consecutive season.
