Amorim under pressure to continue Boxing Day feat as Man United face Wolves

Manchester United are in desperate need of a response when they travel to struggling Wolves on Boxing Day, live on talkSPORT.

Ruben Amorim will need to bounce back from his side’s humbling 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth that continued his mixed start to life as boss.

The Portuguese claimed the biggest victory of his short tenure with his dramatic 2-1 comeback at the Etihad in the Manchester derby.

He has since overseen two defeats in a week that saw United crash out of the Carabao Cup before losing at home to the Cherries.

Their latest result has meant the Red Devils will spend Christmas Day in the bottom half of the table for the first time since 1989.

A tough test at Wolves awaits and they will be buoyed by their win over Leicester in Vitor Pereira’s first game since replacing Gary O’Neil.

Wolves vs Man United: Rash decision

Marcus Rashford may be feeling a sense of deja vu from the last trip to Molineux during the festive period under a new manager.

Ironically on New Year’s Eve 2022, Rashford was benched by Erik ten Hag for a win at Wolves for ‘internal disciplinary’ reasons.

Rashford himself revealed he was punished after sleeping in and arriving late to a team meeting – having turned from villain to hero by scoring the winner as a substitute.

The 27-year-old may hope a similar post-Christmas opportunity arrives against Wolves again after being frozen out by Amorim.

The forward has been left out of the Red Devils’ squad for three successive games while announcing he’s ready to leave the club.

Following back-to-back losses in his absence, Amorim was asked whether Rashford could return here and said: “It depends, we will see.”

    • Manchester United have only failed to score in one of their last 30 Boxing Day league games, a 2-0 loss at Stoke City in 2015. However, they’ve also conceded at least once in each of their last 10 such matches, their longest run without a clean sheet on December 26th.
    • Wolves are unbeaten in their last seven Boxing Day league games (W5 D2), having lost 11 of their 14 such games before this (W1 D2). This is only their third Boxing Day match since their return to the Premier League in 2018 (W1 D1).
    • In both Premier League and English Football League history, Manchester United have won more games and scored more goals on Boxing Day than any other side (22 wins, 74 goals in the Premier League, 54 wins, 202 goals all time).

Wolves vs Man United: Team news

The hosts can welcome back Rayan Ait-Nouri from suspension, while ex-captain Mario Lemina is also expected to recover from a knock.

Pablo Sarabia remains a doubt with a calf issue, while Yerson Mosquera and Boubacar Traore are still in the treatment room.

The visitors will hope to welcome back Matthijs de Ligt, who has missed the last two fixtures with a bout of illness.

However, Victor Lindelof is unlikely to feature due to injury, with Mason Mount and Luke Shaw both long-term absentees.

Rashford remains fit and available for selection but it is yet to be confirmed whether he will make his return here.

    • Having won three of their first five Premier League home games against Man Utd (L2), Wolves are now winless in their last five, losing the last four in a row (D1).
    • Manchester United have won seven of their last eight Premier League games against Wolves, with the exception being a 1-0 home defeat in January 2022.
    • Wolves won 3-0 at Leicester in their first Premier League match under Vítor Pereira last time out. The last manager to win both of his first two top-flight games in charge of Wolves was Sammy Chung in August 1977.

Wolves vs Man United: What has been said?

Reacting to the result against Bournemouth, Micky Gray told talkSPORT: “Manchester United‘s defending has been awful today.

“I’m looking for an improvement under Ruben Amorim over the last couple of games. I’m yet to see it.

“They’ve all been really poor. I can’t pick out a Manchester United player who has really impressed me today. They’ve been really scrappy in possession, and it’s all that Bournemouth deserve.

“I think Ruben Amorim has got a heck of a job on his hands here, not just in January, but the summer after that, getting players out and bringing players in.”

Overall he’s had a hand in 20 goals in 2024 (15 goals, 5 assists), the second most by a Wolves player in a single calendar year in the Premier League after Raúl Jiménez (24 in 2019).
    • With four goals and six assists, Amad Diallo has been involved in 10 goals in his last 11 appearances for Manchester United in all competitions. Overall, only Bruno Fernandes (16) has been involved in more goals for the Red Devils this term than the 22-year-old (12 – 5 goals, 7 assists).

  • ’Not acceptable’: Ange’s whack for Spurs star as struggles continue; Man Utd’s stunning comeback

’Not acceptable’: Ange’s whack for Spurs star as struggles continue; Man Utd’s stunning comeback

Dejan Kulusevski equaliser and a stunning stop from Fraser Forster saved Tottenham’s blushes as Ange Postecoglou’s side drew 1-1 with Rangers in their Europa League clash in Glasgow.

Get all the latest football news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports Sportmail. Sign up now!!!

The result takes Spurs to 11 points from six games, and they sit ninth, only on goal difference out of the top eight, who automatically progress to the knockout rounds, with two league phases matches to come in the new year.

A draw means Tottenham remain winless in their last three Europa League contests, and they have only won once in their last eight matches in all competitions, but for much of the night, things looked like they would play out much worse.

“It’s fair to say we’re in a bit of a struggle,” Postecoglou said post-match.

The Australian manager has been under intense scrutiny this week after back-to-back Premier League losses, and the former Celtic boss’ heart must have been in his mouth when Rangers were through on goal in the 86th minute.

Cyriel Dessers barged his way past several defenders to get a shot away, but Forster stayed big and pulled off a brilliant piece of goal keeping, not for the first time in the match, to tip the ball wide and deny the home side.

Only a minute later, the Ibrox descended into raptures as Dessers found the back of the net this time, but the celebrations were short-lived as the linesperson’s flag was up, and replays showed he was well offside.

Those chances for Rangers were brewing all night, whereas Kulusevski’s equaliser seemingly came from nowhere.

Spurs were patiently playing the ball around at the back for more than a minute before attacking down the right and Kulusevski took matters into his own hands to score in the 75th minute.

The Swede cut back, found fellow substitute Dominic Solanke in the box, continued his run, received the ball back from Solanke and slotted it home with a left foot, first-time shot from near the edge of the penalty area.

Things were looking dire for Tottenham before Kulusevski’s brilliant run as they went unpunished for their sloppiness in the first half, but it took less than two minutes after the break for Rangers to finally capitalise on yet another Spurs error.

They coughed up the ball in midfield, and right back James Tavernier broke down the right-hand side, whipped a beautiful, curling ball in the box to pick out front man Hamza Igamane in the box, and the Moroccan slammed the half-volley into the bottom corner.

The third-placed side in the Scottish Premiership looked more threatening for most of the evening, and the home supporters relished watching their team take it up to an English side.

It was the first time Spurs has travelled north to face Rangers in a competitive fixture since the 1960s, and the last time the blue half of Glasgow hosted a Premier League outfit, they were humiliated 7-1 by Liverpool.

That was in a Champions League contest in 2022 when Mohamed Salah came off the bench to score a stunning six minute hat trick, and it was arguably the most disastrous night of decades of heartbreak against English opposition in European competition, having not beaten a team from south of the border since getting the better of Leeds United in 1992.

For most of the freezing cold evening, it appeared as if that streak might be broken but Rangers ultimately did not make the most of the 15 shots they took, six of which were on target.

Both sides looked like they would be made to pay for their sloppiness with the ball throughout the first half as they each had threatening opportunities on the counter attack, but lacked the poise to finish.

It was a back-and-forth, end-to-end contest with Tottenham having more of the ball but their makeshift defence looked incredibly vulnerable at times.

Teenager Archie Gray, who typically plays right back, started alongside Ragu Dragusin as a central defender due to Spurs’ injury woes but it was goal keeper Forster who repelled Rangers’ attacks best with two excellent first half saves.

The former Celtic shot stopper was booed and jeered extensively by the home fans, but kept his cool to tip a bullet from Nedim Bajrami over the bar in the 10th minute before ensuring they headed to the sheds deadlocked with an excellent save with his feet from a Vaclav Cerny shot in the final minute of the half.

Rangers came out hard and finished the opening stanza the better of the two sides, while Tottenham controlled the middle period of the opening half.

The home side lost centre back John Souttar, who is the brother of Socceroo Harry, in the 34th minute to a groin injury and it appeared as if a change at the back might open things up for Spurs.

They had their chances but only one of their six first half shots was on target, and that was a tame shot from Son Heung-min, who started up front with Timo Werner, James Maddison and Brennan Johnson sitting behind him, in a change of formation from Postecoglou.

The much-maligned Werner was benched at half time for goal scorer Dejan Kulusevski, while Johnson last an hour before making for Dominic Solanke, and Postecoglou took the unusual step of publicly expressing his frustrations with Werner post-match.

“He wasn’t playing anywhere near the levels he can. It’s not acceptable to me. I told him that. He’s a senior international, a German international,” he said.

“In the moment we’re in now, I need everyone to be at least going out there and giving the best they can. What he produced wasn’t acceptable. I expect more from the senior players like him.”

Spurs seem to be in a funk in attack, and with a trip to Southampton, a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Manchester United and a visit from Premier League leaders Liverpool before Christmas, they will need to break it fast to get back to winning ways.

SUPER SUBSTITUTE INSPIRES MAN UTD COMEBACK

Second-half substitute Rasmus Hojlund scored twice as Manchester United fought back to earn a 2-1 win at Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on Thursday.

The hosts took the lead shortly after half-time, but Hojlund levelled on 62 minutes, six minutes after replacing Marcus Rashford, when the Danish striker tapped in Amad Diallo’s deflected shot.

Two minutes from time, he beat Plzen goalkeeper Martin Jedlicka again with a clinical finish, turning around his marker after United captain Bruno Fernandes had found him inside the box with a clever free-kick.

Matej Vydra, a former Watford, West Brom, Reading, Derby and Burnley forward, opened the scoring for the hosts with a close-range finish three minutes after half-time.

Pavel Sulc found Vydra facing an empty net after he had intercepted United goalkeeper Andre Onana’s pass inside the box.

Hojlund double guides United to victory | 00:58

The goal was a wake-up call for United manager Ruben Amorim, who made three replacements in its wake, including Hojlund.

“It was not a great game,” said Amorim, before praising the substitutes. “They changed the game. They are there to do that so I’m pleased with that.”

He added he was happy with the outcome: “It was important not to give up so that is a great message.”

The former Sporting Lisbon boss replaced the sacked Eric ten Hag in November, but the chilly evening in Plzen showed United still have some way to go.

Both teams came into the match with nine points from five Europa League games, and they took time to find their pace.

Fernandes had the first shot on target half an hour into the game, but Jedlicka parried his low right-footed effort from the edge of the box.Onana watched Cheick Souare’s shot curl just past the top corner of his goal two minutes before the break.

United substitutes Mason Mount and Antony were denied by Jedlicka in the second half, with Mount failing to beat the ‘keeper twice from close range.

But Hojlund turned the match on its head to put United in a strong position for direct qualification to the last 16.

“We didn’t have so much time to work on this type of game. We were controlling the game but didn’t have the pace (in the first half),” said Amorim.

“We want to improve and we want to improve really fast,” he added. United next face Rangers at Old Trafford on January 23.

Mount leaves pitch for Man United with blood pouring out of head wound

Mason Mount had to be substituted following a nasty head collision against Tottenham.

In the final ten minutes of the match with the visiting Spurs leading 3-0, Manchester United midfielder Mount went to challenge an aerial ball with Radu Dragusin.

However, the United man sustained a heavy blow and blood was seeing pouring from his head.

Mount was unable to continue in the final stages of the match and Erik ten Hag replaced him with Amad Diallo.

The former Chelsea man had just made his return to action for United following a hamstring injury.

He replaced Kobbie Mainoo as part of a midfield shake-up following Bruno Fernandes’ first-half red card.

Goals from Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke capped off a miserable afternoon for the Red Devils at Old Trafford as they lost 3-0.

Whilst Spurs have risen to eighth in the Premier League, United sit 12th in the standings with just two wins from six matches.

Defeat on Sunday is their third of the campaign so far and already raises questions over their ability to qualify for European football.

Ten Hag’s side are six points adrift of fifth spot that is currently occupied by Aston Villa, their next league opponents.

It took Spurs just three minutes to open the scoring as Micky van de Ven almost ran the length of the pitch before assisting Johnson’s tap-in.

United captain Fernandes was then shown a straight red card on the approach to half-time for a high foot on James Maddison.

Kulusevski doubled the north London side’s advantage two minutes into the second-half with a close-range finish.

The third and final goal came from Solanke as he nodded in from Pape Matar Sarr’s corner.

United have the chance to respond on Thursday night in their Europa League trip to Porto before their clash away at Villa, their final match ahead of the international break.

Chris Eubank Jr issues message to Ten Hag after training with Man United stars

Chris Eubank Jr may be preparing for his boxing return – but he has jokingly told Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag he is ready for a ‘career change’.

The 34-year-old, a known diehard supporter of the Red Devils, is currently out in America where he took part in a recent training session in Los Angeles.

Wearing the club’s new blue away kit with the No10 on the back, Eubank shared a video on his Instagram story where he can be seen being put through his paces.

Joining in with the work-out, he performed a series of stretches, before showing off his footwork with the ball.

And he then uploaded two pictures of himself on social media alongside United’s England internationals Marcus Rashford and Mason Mount.

The two-time IBO super-middleweight champion teased he could hang up his boots to join United in a tongue-in-cheek caption.

He said on Instagram: “Too late for a career change? PUT ME IN COACH!! @manchesterunited.”

Eubank Jr has made no secret of his love for the Old Trafford outfit, who he spent time with last year in their pre-season of America.

Speaking to United’s website in the summer of 2023, he remarked: “I know these guys, I’ve followed them for years.

“They’re a great bunch of boys. I’m close with a few of them.

“We’re athletes and they appreciate the things that I do in the boxing ring.

“We all know how hard and dedicated you have to be to make it to the top.

Mount grabs first goal since 2022 as Brentford dent United’s top four hopes

Manchester United escaped with a 1-1 draw away at Brentford – despite taking the lead in injury time.

The Red Devils thought they had snatched all three points at the Gtech Community Stadium after Mason Mount opened his account for the club.

Striking low into the bottom corner in the sixth minute of second half stoppage time, the ex-Chelsea star scored in the Premier League for the first time since December 2022.

But they couldn’t hold on for the win, as Brentford equalised three minutes later after Kristoffer Ajer fired home from an Ivan Toney Toney cut back.

And it was nothing less than what the Bees deserved having had 31 shots on goal compared to the 11 from the Red Devils.

Thomas Frank‘s men hit the woodwork four times in west London, and will be left wondering how they didn’t emerge victorious.

Brentford are also the first team this season to boast at least 80 touches inside the opposition box.

It was another disappointing display from United, who appear to have added to their injured list with Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof forced off.

The result leaves United in sixth spot – 11 points off the top four and eight behind fifth-placed Tottenham.

As for Brentford, they have moved five points clear of the bottom three as they search for their first win since February 10.

Erik ten Hag conceded to talkSPORT that his side were fortunate to come away from Brentford with seomthing.

He remarked: “This is what I told the players – we didn’t deserve to win. But if you’re winning, then you have to bring it over the line.

Gerard Pique reveals the differences between being managed by Sir Alex Ferguson and Pep Guardiola, but explains one key thing they have in common

“We are experienced in such situations, and normally we do very well in such circumstances.

“But today we conceded the equaliser, and that’s very disappointing.”

Former Chelsea left-back Scott Minto was heavily critical of United as the game approached the full-time whistle.

He said on talkSPORT commentary: “I’m telling you, this is a 5-1 game. United have got away with a point.

“United scored so late on, they had to see it out, they have to get the win and all three points, whether you’re stealing the win, or if it’s daylight robbery, who cares, you come away with the win.

“You don’t concede when you’ve just taken the lead in the 96th minute.”

He added: “Even if United had won, that would have papered over the cracks.

  • Goldbridge: Where does Mount fit at United? He can challenge Bruno for his spot

Goldbridge: Where does Mount fit at United? He can challenge Bruno for his spot

In an exclusive column for talkSPORT.com, Mark Goldbridge delivers his verdict on the latest news coming out of Manchester United.

Mason Mount is nearing a return to fitness, but does the £55million signing have a place in Erik ten Hag‘s squad? Plus, the YouTube host responds to the ‘Solskjaer back’ brigade and where Jadon Sancho ranks in the club’s all-time flops.

    5

Mount has returned to training after fourth months out with a calf injury and may soon make his return to the field – but where will he play?Credit: Getty

    Mount-ain to climb

It’s been a write-off for Mason Mount so far at Manchester United. It’s very, very frustrating.

We’ve seen it with Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia at Chelsea and when Jurrien Timber at Arsenal – when you sign a player and then they miss basically most of their first season it’s massively frustrating and it’s easy to get frustrated with the player, the club or the manager, but it’s an injury.

So putting that aside and going back to when we bought Mount, I must admit I was confused. Where does he fit in?

I really liked Mason Mount at Chelsea, when he was good, and he was 24 at the time so he was a good signing, but I was confused where he’s going to play.

    Read more from Mark Goldbridge

I assumed he was going to play where Christian Eriksen did with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes, but that’s been proven not to work. You get overrun, you need more defensive cover, and this season we’ve also seen the development of Mainoo.

So where Mount fits in when he’s back…

I look at Martin Odegaard at Arsenal and he’s a magnetic No.10, the way he looks and protects the ball – I think Man United desperately need a player like that, but then what are you doing with Bruno Fernandes?

Ideally Mount plays as the No.10 and we get a little bit more control of the pitch, but there is a big Bruno Fernandes problem there because that is Bruno’s position and he’s the captain, and I really don’t want Bruno on the right wing because that’s just putting a square peg in a round hole.

Goldbridge has previously said Fernandes' form has 'fallen off a cliff' this season - maybe Mount's return can be the push he needs to get back to his best?

    5

I think Mount’s best position is ahead of Mainoo and Casemiro, but what do you do with Bruno?

So I don’t really have the answer, but he can’t play in a midfield three with Bruno and Casemiro, I think that would be massively imbalanced.

But we need him back, we need competition for places, so why shouldn’t he be pushing Bruno out of the team? He’s been off it all season.

Mark Goldbridge labels Jadon Sancho as a Manchester United flop suggesting he ‘completely and utterly failed’ in the Premier League

Ole back? You’re having a laugh

I thought it was a brilliant interview with Solskjaer on The Overlap because I think it encapsulated his strengths and weaknesses – like this blind loyalty to players who weren’t good enough.

When Roy Keane smelled Ole’s drink after his Fred comments – it’s true, he spoke glowingly about players like Fred when ultimately they were not good enough to take Man United to titles, so it exposes the naivety of Solskjaer as a coach.

I don’t think he’s a very good coach to be honest, but what a guy and he is a legend of the club and he comes across how we’ve always known him to be.

There was a massive guilt thing in the fanbase to turn on Ole and say he needed to go because he’s loved so much, but you’ve got to be cruel to be kind. He was not good enough.

There was some other interesting stuff as well, he spoke about players not standing up, downing tools, not wanting the captaincy, I think that’s was really interesting, especially when that’s clearly a problem at United now.

The inconsistency, I believe, comes from a lack of mentality in the dressing room from some players… and there’s been all sorts of speculation about who these players are.

Goldbridge says Solskjaer's appearance on the Overlap showed Man United are still being dogged by the same problems behind the scenes

    5

Goldbridge says Solskjaer’s appearance on the Overlap showed Man United are still being dogged by the same problems behind the scenesCredit: YouTube

But the stuff about signings was brilliant, because when you’ve got managers like Jose Mourinho and now Erik ten Hag who have struggled with that and you’ve got Solskjaer coming out and saying ‘I wanted Jude Bellingham and I wanted Erling Haaland, I told them about these players and they didn’t do it’ – that is ridiculous.

I think Solskjaer said two or three times, before he even came to the club as manager, ‘Go and buy Haaland’, he then comes to the club and says Haaland has a release clause and United still ignore him, and now Haaland is doing what he’s doing – for Manchester City!

There would still be some United fans, especially with the debate about Ten Hag, who would say, ‘Bring back Ole’, which is just incredible. It’s just complete and utter nonsense and it’s red-tinted glasses ignoring the past.

I think the interview is completely about making himself look good so he can get a job elsewhere, but as a United fan I’m quite glad because it also just exposes the massive problems at the club.

We’ve got another manager under fire and Solskjaer is coming out and telling the problems he had there and, knowing they’re still there, it just highlights to United fans to enormity of the job and the massive amount of problems that have gone on over the last few years behind the scenes that make managing that club really hard no matter how good you are.

    Top of the flops?

I think Jadon Sancho has to go down as a flop, and that’s always a hard word to use, but he does.

This is a player we spent two summers trying to sign. I was really excited about it, a fantastic CV at Dortmund, but to be honest with you he completely and utterly failed in the Premier League.

There have been flashes, but that’s not good enough, especially when you look at what players like Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka are doing.

He had this opportunity to come to the Premier League for a big, big transfer fee and wages and at a big club, and he’s failed.

There’s been a lot of stuff about blaming Ten Hag, well he wasn’t there when Sancho signed, he was with Solskjaer for a year.

In the first three months of Ten Hag’s reign the manager let him go off and deal with the issues that he had, I think he’s been well looked after by Manchester United.

He’s just another Memphis Depay, Angel Di Maria, Alexis Sanchez and every other Man United player who has failed. He’s not in an exclusive club, there are a lot of players who fail at all sorts of clubs.

There are reports Sancho could be set to stay put at Dormund in the summer following his loan return from Old Trafford

I think Jadon Sancho just needs to look in a mirror, look at why he’s failed and try and rescue his career, because he’s a really talented player.

But not at Manchester United. I think the bridges are burnt. We need players who take responsibility, and I just don’t think Sancho has done that.

So I wish him all the best, but he does need to leave and move on.

Ten Hag provides Rashford update as he details when forgotten star may return

Erik ten Hag has confirmed that both Marcus Rashford and Jonny Evans are available for Manchester United this weekend.

The Red Devils face Everton on Saturday lunchtime in the hope of bouncing back from their 3-1 derby day defeat to Manchester City.

Back-to-back losses against the Citizens and Fulham have seen United‘s top four hopes take a huge blow.

Sitting in sixth spot, they sit six points behind Tottenham in fifth, while United trail fourth-placed Aston Villa by a whopping 11 points.

And with Spurs and Villa to face off on Sunday, Ten Hag knows his side must capitalise with one of their rivals to drop points in the race to secure Champions League football.

In a boost for United, Rashford and Evans, who both withdrew from the clash at the Etihad due to injury, will be available for selection this weekend.

Speaking of the pair in his pre-match press conference, Ten Hag said: “That’s the good news. They recovered after the derby, so they are available.

“The rest is the same squad apart from Omari Forson. He dropped out, he has an injury.”

There was also news on Mason Mount‘s prospective return to action.

The midfielder, who joined last summer in a deal rising to £60million, has not played since November 11 after picking up a calf injury.

Mount will be hoping to kickstart his Man United career when he returns

But despite that lengthy absence, Ten Hag suggested that Mount could soon be back on the pitch.

He remarked: “Mason Mount, I think he is in a good spell now and he will return shortly. I think after the international break.”

In a further boost ahead of next week’s FA Cup quarter-final clash against Liverpool, the Dutchman hinted three first team stars could be involved.

The ex-Ajax manager stated: “For next week, some players are planning to return, hopefully when the process will continue like it is now.

Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, I expect them to be available for our game against Liverpool. [Rasmus] Hojlund as well.”

Goldbridge plays ‘keep or sell’ with ten Man United stars including Rashford

In an exclusive column for talkSPORT.com, Mark Goldbridge delivers his verdict on the players Manchester United should keep or sell…

It’s all change at Manchester United at the moment with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS getting to work… and there’s plenty for them to do.

    11

We’re in the January transfer window and there are a lot of question marks over a number of players in Erik ten Hag’s squad right now.

So, who should Manchester United keep and who should they sell in what remains of the January transfer window, or in the summer?

    Andre Onana

This is someone who I’ve been critical of, but this is not a player who needs to be sold, which might surprise people. His standard has just not been good enough, but it is early days.

I remember the early days of David de Gea, I certainly don’t think they were this bad. There are more months left in the season and I don’t think they’ll sell him in the summer.

    Read more from Mark Goldbridge

But, if he keeps making mistakes then big clubs are ruthless and he would have to be sold.

    Verdict: KEEP (for now)

Onana has struggled at Man United this season

    Harry Maguire

He was very close to a move to West Ham in the summer, but stayed and did reasonably well until he got injured.

I wouldn’t be doing anything in January, unless a big offer came in, but in the summer when you look at his career at Manchester United and his age profile and wanting to move forward as a club over the next three years, I think that’s a little too much for Maguire.

I would move him on in the summer.

    Verdict: SELL

Maguire has been at Man United since 2019

    Raphael Varane

There was talk of him going to Saudi Arabia in January to raise some money. I was dead against that, but as we go into the summer it is one where we have to take emotion out of it and ask if Varane is going to be part of a three-year project at his age and injury issues.

You could cash in and remove those huge wages. I wouldn’t be opposed to selling him in the summer, but on the other hand I don’t mind keeping him.

If we want to move forward with a project, then the summer would be the time to cash in.

    Verdict: SELL

Man United signed Varane from Real Madrid for around £41m

    11

    Mason Mount

He’s had a terrible start to his Manchester United career. You could almost say he’s a January signing, because he’s done nothing as a summer signing with these two injuries.

We’re confused as a fanbase as to where he fits in and still don’t know where he’ll fit in.

We spent £55m on him and it’s unfair to say sell him when he hasn’t really had any game time.

We are going to have to see what happens in the second part of the season, so it’s keep Mason Mount for me.

    Verdict: KEEP

Mount has played just 12 times for United so far

    Christian Eriksen

For me, this is a definite let go. Good player, but probably not used properly at Manchester United.

I always saw Eriksen as a No.10 at Spurs and I don’t know why we’ve played him as an eight. He’s not quick enough, doesn’t pick up the runners, and is out of position.

This is a position you have to rejuvenate and have to let him go in the summer.

    Verdict: SELL

Eriksen was a free transfer signing in 2022

    11

    Casemiro

I’m not in a similar boat to Varane here. We’ve seen the likes of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric play well into their 30s. Casemiro is still three or four years off them.

The quality of the player and what he offers to the team is valuable. You can’t get rid of everybody in the summer.

If Varane, Maguire and Eriksen go then you have to keep one of the senior players and Casemiro would be the best one to keep.

    Verdict: KEEP

Casemiro is 31 and signed from Real Madrid in 2022

    Scott McTominay

What are we going to do with Manchester United’s top goalscorer Scott McTominay? There are some fans out there who think he’s a decent player… but I’m not one of them.

He does exactly what he says on the tin. If he scores a goal it makes a difference, but if he doesn’t then brings next to nothing to the team.

This is not a Manchester United player, I think McTominay needs to go. I would be amazed if the club did it, but it’s 100 per cent sell.

    Verdict: SELL

McTominay has been at Man United since he was five

    11

    Anthony Martial

This is easy. It comes down to player power over why he’s still here.

Most Manchester United fans would agree the road has come to an end, it’s ridiculous the contract might get run down so he can earn a bit more money.

There’s no value to keeping Anthony Martial and he should be going in the January transfer window.

    Verdict: SELL

Martial's contract expires in the summer

    11

Martial’s contract expires in the summerCredit: Getty

    Marcus Rashford

There will be zero appetite from the club to remove a homegrown player like Marcus Rashford, especially when they’ve given him a massive contract.

These next four months are crucial for him, I don’t think we can have the same as the last four months.

Let’s hope the goal against Spurs is a spark. We know he is capable of scoring goals.

I don’t want to see Marcus Rashford sold by Manchester United. I want to see him at his best.

I would keep, but it has to be a watching brief. It’s not acceptable to play how he has over the last few months.

    Verdict: KEEP

Rashford has scored just four goals this season

    11

    Antony

The price tag is ridiculous. As for the player, it’s similar to Rashford, you have to see how he does over the next four months then look in the summer.

If it’s still the same then it’s hard to justify a future at Manchester United.

He could be a player we end up loaning in the summer if he has a bad few months.

    Verdict: KEEP (for now)

  • Antony with more bookings than goals but Hojlund impressive – Ten Hag’s signings assessed

Antony with more bookings than goals but Hojlund impressive – Ten Hag’s signings assessed

Erik ten Hag is coming under a huge amount of pressure as Manchester United continue their nightmare start to the campaign.

The Red Devils have lost five of their ten Premier League games this season while also losing two from three in the Champions League.

    3

United were embarrassed by Man City at Old Trafford on Sunday, with their bitter rivals easing to a 3-0 win in the derby.

That result has seen fans question the squad that Ten Hag has built, so talkSPORT.com takes a look at how much he has spent and on who…

How much has Ten Hag spent on signings?

Since arriving at United in the summer of 2022, Ten Hag has spent over £400million on new signings.

Only Chelsea have spent more than the Red Devils under the Dutchman.

United’s £400million spending has been split between 16 different new arrivals.

Antony is the most expensive signing under Ten Hag after he brought the Brazilian with him from Ajax for a whopping £88million.

The winger’s international teammate Casemiro was signed for £70million while Lisandro Martinez was another big-money arrival for £55million.

The Red Devils also paid over £180million for Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund, leaving Ten Hag with a huge amount of money spent at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag’s Man United signings

    • Antony – £88million
    • Rasmus Hojlund – £72million
    • Casemiro – £70million
    • Mason Mount – £60million
    • Lisandro Martinez – £55million
    • Andre Onana – £47million
    • Tyrell Malacia – £14million
    • Altay Bayindir – £4.3million
    • Christian Eriksen – Free
    • Jonny Evans – Free
    • Sofyan Amrabat – Loan
    • Sergio Reguilon – Loan
    • Marcel Sabitzer – Loan
    • Wout Weghorst – Loan
    • Martin Dubravka – Loan
    • Jack Butland – Loan
Noel Gallgher slams Manchester United’s Antony for behaving like a ‘moron’ and questions if Bruno Fernandes should be captain

    How have the signings fared?

Despite all the money spent, most of United’s signings under Ten Hag have struggled.

Antony is one of the club’s most expensive ever arrivals but he has most certainly not lived up to the price tag.

The 23-year-old has scored eight goals and provided three assists in 53 appearances for the club in all competitions.

In fact, Antony has been shown a yellow card more times than he has scored goals during his time at the club.

His latest caution came as he kicked out at Jeremy Doku during United’s Manchester derby defeat, with his frustration showing through on the pitch.

This led to criticism from pundits and fans alike with patience wearing thin with the winger.

It’s fair to say that the £88m fee paid to Ajax has ended up being a huge waste for Ten Hag.

Antony has not lived up to his hefty price tag

    3

Antony has not lived up to his hefty price tag

As for Casemiro, he began his United career positively but this season his performances have dipped with fans frustrated.

Lisandro Martinez is a favourite at Old Trafford, with his aggressive nature making him something of a cult hero soon after joining the club.

The defender has been impressive since arriving but after suffering an injury last season, he is yet to feature this campaign.

A huge amount of Ten Hag’s overall spend came this summer but questions have been asked about whether it was spent on the right players.

Mason Mount has struggled to get going after leaving Chelsea, failing to score and only providing one assist for the club in eight games.

He has been out with an injury, so more time is expected to be given before a real judgement is made on the signing.

In goal, Andre Onana was picked to replace David de Gea and his opening performances proved his £47m price tag to be worth it.

He is capable of making some great saves but errors on the ball have crept into his game and he has received criticism from fans and club legends alike since his arrival.

Man United legend Peter Schmeichel commented on Onana last month

    3

Rasmus Hojlund has provided some positivity though, with his first few games for United proving he will be a real talent.

The 20-year-old has quickly become a fan favourite and Ten Hag has been booed multiple times by his own supporters for substituting the striker.

As for the other 10 signings, they have largely been loans and frees with only Tyrell Malacia and Altay Bayindir arriving for a cash sum.

Christian Eriksen has proved to be a reliable midfielder after being signed for free while Jonny Evans joined this summer for nothing.

Wout Weghort’s loan spell in Manchester last season was one to forget while Marcel Sabitzer wasn’t signed on a permanent deal following his shot stint.

So overall, Ten Hag’s signings have very rarely paid off and this has left him with a squad that are not living up to expectations.

The United boss is under huge pressure to keep his job but he is keeping up hope that his side can turn their fortunes around soon.

Man United vs Man City predicted line-ups: Casemiro back and Alvarez returns

The Manchester derby is always one of the standout Premier League clashes, and this weekend’s one will be no different.

Manchester United welcome neighbours Man City to Old Trafford, with both sides not at their best.

Erik ten Hag’s men are doing just enough to nick wins here and there, but they are a long way from showcasing their top level.

Meanwhile, City lost three domestic fixtures in a row before the last international break.

But the treble-winners have since beaten Brighton and Young Boys in the Champions League so could be getting back on track.

Plus, Pep Guardiola has very few injury concerns to contend with, while United face plenty of issues.

    Man United

The hosts have lots of fitness problems, especially in defence.

Lisandro Martinez, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are all out.

Shaw is hopeful of being involved soon, but the other three are out of action for the foreseeable future.

Kobbie Mainoo played for Man United’s Under-21s in midweek, but this will come too soon for him to be considered.

    Amad Diallo is also injured.

However, Casemiro is fit and is likely to return to the team while Alejandro Garnacho is likely to be taken out of the firing line after the FA opened an investigation into him for a ‘racially aggravated‘ tweet.

Andre Onana will start in goal and will look to build off his incredible penalty save deep into stoppage time in midweek.

Diogo Dalot is the club’s only fit senior right-back, while Sergio Reguilon will hope to start at left-back.

But Ten Hag might elect to stick Victor Lindelof in there instead.

Harry Maguire has been in great form over the last two matches and will probably partner Raphael Varane.

In midfield, United have some choices to make.

Casemiro is almost certain to come back in, but who will partner him?

Sofyan Amrabat, Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay all stand a chance.

McTominay has been scoring for fun recently and Amrabat would provide another solid option alongside Casemiro.

But if United are to beat City, they need to be able to create chances, and Eriksen can do that from deep, so he should get the nod.

Mason Mount is yet to set the world on fire and is likely to have to make do with a spot on the bench again.

Antony is likely to start on the right due to the potential ban for Garnacho.

Marcus Rashford hasn’t been at his best this season, but he scored the winner in this same fixture last year and can always produce a moment of magic.

United captain Bruno Fernandes will then slot in behind Rasmus Hojlund, who will be desperate for his first Premier League goal.

City have a much cleaner bill of health, with only long-term absentee Kevin De Bruyne and goalkeeper Zack Steffen in the treatment room.

But Manuel Akanji won’t be available, so Guardiola will have to decide which centre-back will partner Ruben Dias.

    In goal, Ederson will start.

Kyle Walker will come in at right-back and Dias is likely to play as the left-sided centre-back.

John Stones should take Akanji’s place and Josko Gvardiol can fill in at left-back instead of Nathan Ake.

In midfield, Rodri is certain to start with Mateo Kovacic expected alongside him.

Jack Grealish is expected to drop out for England teammate Phil Foden.

He will take up a spot on the right, with Jeremy Doku moving across to the left.

Julian Alvarez will then slot in behind Erling Haaland.
