Mexico claims glory with first-ever Concacaf Nations League title

Concacaf is once again painted green, white, and red. A penalty sealed Mexico’s first-ever Concacaf Nations League title, with Raúl Jiménez emerging as the star of El Tri. His two goals were crucial in securing a 2-1 victory over Panama at SoFi Stadium, finally delivering the long-awaited championship.

The match was anything but easy for Mexico. Panama arrived determined to play aggressively and put El Tri under pressure. Javier Aguirre’s squad, however, capitalized on key moments to claim victory-16 years after his last international title with Mexico.

A tense battle in Los Angeles

Panama started stronger, creating early chances that tested Mexico’s defense. Adalberto Carrasquilla fired a powerful shot from outside the box, but Luis Malagón made a crucial save to keep the game level. The Mexican team struggled to find their rhythm, but a defensive mistake from Panama changed everything. Goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera misjudged a play, allowing Jiménez to head the ball into the net and ignite the crowd at SoFi Stadium.

Santi Giménez nearly doubled Mexico’s lead, breaking past Edgardo Fariña but narrowly missing the target. However, Panama responded with dangerous attacks, exposing Mexico’s defensive weaknesses. A well-placed cross by José Luis Rodríguez created a clear opportunity, but Edgardo Fariña failed to convert. Moments later, a long-range shot forced Malagon into another impressive save.

Panama’s persistence paid off when Johan Vasquez fouled Cecilio Waterman inside the box. After a VAR review, the referee awarded a penalty, which Carrasquilla confidently converted, leveling the match. With the momentum shifting, Mexico found itself struggling to regain control against Panama’s physical and organized defense.

    Jimenez delivers Mexico’s historic win

The tension inside SoFi Stadium reached its peak. With 68,000 fans-mostly Mexican supporters-watching anxiously, frustration led to moments of controversy, including offensive chants from the stands. Just as the game seemed destined for extra time, fate intervened. José Córdoba’s handball inside the box gave Mexico a lifeline. Jiménez stepped up once again, showing nerves of steel as he converted the penalty for his second goal of the night.

With that decisive strike, Mexico secured its long-awaited Nations League title, finally adding the missing trophy to its Concacaf collection. The victory not only ended El Tri’s frustration in the tournament but also reaffirmed Mexico’s dominance in the region.

Mexico defeat Jamaica to open Copa America campaign but concern lingers on Edson Alvarez's health

Gerardo Arteaga scored from the edge of the penalty area in the 69th minute, and Mexico beat Jamaica 1-0 on Saturday night in its Copa America opener.

El Tri, competing as a guest in South America’s championship for the 11th time, dominated the match and scored on their 17th shot.

Joel Latibeaudiere‘s weak headed clearance went to Luis Romo, who controlled the ball off a thigh and passed to Arteaga. His left-foot shot beat goalkeeper Jahmali Waite and went inside the far post for his second goal in 25 international appearances.

Michail Antonio appeared to put Jamaica ahead with a short-range header in the 50th minute but the goal was disallowed for offside following a video review.

Mexico captain Edson lvarez left in the 30th minute following a left hamstring injury and was replaced by Romo.

Venezuela beat Ecuador 2-1 in the other Group B match. Mexico plays Venezuela at Inglewood, California, on Wednesday, when Jamaica faces Ecuador at Las Vegas. The group finishes on June 30, when Mexico plays Ecuador at Glendale, Arizona, and Jamaica faces Venezuela at Austin, Texas.

El Tri reached the semifinals in 1997, 1999 and 2007. The Reggae Boyz are 0-7 in the tournament following group-stage elimination in 2015 and 2016.

Before a crowd of 53,763 at NRG Stadium, Mexico wore red, green and black jerseys patterned after folk art.

El Tri has not lost to Jamaica since a 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinal.

  • Brazil stops Mexico's reaction and beat them with a goal in stoppage time

Brazil stops Mexico's reaction and beat them with a goal in stoppage time

Mexico lost again just before the start of the 2024 Copa Amrica, now against Brazil, just a few days after Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguayan team thrashed El Tri by 4-0, as the Mexicans suffered another heartbreaking defeat now by a 3-2 score in a friendly match held at Kyle Field in Texas on Saturday evening.

In the previous match against Uruguay, the Mexican team had given some reserve players a chance to prove themselves. However, for the match against Brazil, coach Jaime Lozano opted for a more experienced lineup, with the exception of the injured goalkeeper, Luis ngel Malagn.

The match saw an early goal from Hugo Pereira in the 5th minute, setting the tone for the South Americans. Gabriel Martinelli added to their lead in the 54th minute. However, Mexico fought back, with Julin Quiones scoring in the 73rd minute and Guillermo Martinez equalizing in the 90+2 minute. The game seemed to be heading for a draw, but Endrick’s goal in the 95th minute sealed the win for the five-time World Cup Champions.

Brazil fielded a team that included many players expected to be in their starting lineup. At the same time, Mexico played with a squad that is 90% likely to be the one competing in the Copa Amrica.

    Brazil took an early lead

Less than five minutes into the match, the five-time world champions took the lead with a quick play. Andrs Pereira slipped between two Mexican defenders and, from the edge of the box, fired an unstoppable shot past Julio Gonzlez.

Brazil then became more cautious with the ball, and Mexico couldn’t find a way to equalize in the first half despite starting with the Gimenez-Quiones duo on the field.

The second half continued in the same vein, with Brazil being quicker than Mexico in areas like midfield, where the Aztec squad kept losing the ball. In a quick play, Martinelli took the ball to the sides to score the second goal, which seemed like a knockout for Jaime Lozano’s squad.

Mexico finally reacts, but fails to secure the result

Finally, the Mexican team began to react. After stopping a counterattack, Antuna passed to Alexis Vega, who took the Brazilian defense to the goal line and delivered a cross Quiones sent into the back of the net.

Mexico started finding their rhythm after a brief pause in the game for the anti-homophobia protocol. In stoppage time, Guillermo Martnez scored after two attempts from a corner kick, sparking celebrations among the Mexican fans in Texas.

However, Brazilian experience and the advantage of having Real Madrid players weighed in the final moments. Endrick headed in a cross from the left to beat Julio Gonzlez and secure the final score.

  • Mexico struggles but secures spot in Copa America via penalty shootout vs Honduras

Mexico struggles but secures spot in Copa America via penalty shootout vs Honduras

After eight years, the Mexican National Team is set to compete in the Copa America once again.

Jaime Lozano’s squad secured their ticket to the prestigious CONMEBOL tournament by eliminating Honduras in the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Nations League 2023-2024 in a dramatic penalty shootout on Tuesday night.

In a match held at the legendary Azteca Stadium, the Mexican team earned their goals through a free-kick by Luis Chvez at the 43rd minute of the first half and a powerful strike by Edson lvarez within the crowded rival area at the 103rd minute of the second half.

Despite the 2-0 deficit, the players understood the necessity to push for goals in front of over 50,000 spectators at the Coloso de Santa rsula in Mexico City.

Mexico’s last appearance in the tumultuous CONMEBOL tournament was for the Copa America Centenario in the United States in 2016, under the leadership of Colombian coach Juan Carlos Osorio.

Mexico’s win marred by referee controversy

Alongside the triumph of the Tricolor securing a place in Copa America 2024, attention has been drawn to the controversy surrounding the refereeing decisions.

The late equalizer by Mexico occurred after the allocated 9 minutes of extra time in the second half.

The penalty shootout added to the chaos, with Csar ‘Chino’ Huerta’s kicks being repeated three times due to goalkeeper Edrick Menjvar’s movements off the goal line.

Menjvar received a caution and was subsequently expelled for accumulating a yellow card during the match.

Despite the rollercoaster of emotions for Mexican fans, from the joy of goals to the disappointment of the extra time and penalties, the Mexican National Team has secured its place to compete against South American teams in the Copa America next year.

The focus now shifts to their ultimate goal: preparing for the FIFA World Cup in Mexico / Canada / United States in 2026.

  • Jimmy Lozano officially named Mexico's head coach for 2026 World Cup

Jimmy Lozano officially named Mexico's head coach for 2026 World Cup

Jaime “Jimmy” Lozano will be in charge of leading the Mexico National Football Team through the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) announced Thursday.

The 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup title run convinced the federation to keep Lozano and he will now be in charge of attempting to reach the quarter-finals stage of the World Cup as hosts of the tournament. Last time El Tri moved past the Round of 16 match was in Mexico 1986.

FILE: US Soccer reveals investigation involving USMNT coach Berhalter

There will be an evaluation process after the 2024 Copa America to see if Lozano is moving in the right direction. He has full support from his players, so it’s unlikely they’ll boot him for subpar results up to that instance

Ivar Sisniega, president of the FMF, shared a video to hix X (Twitter) account to announce the continuation of the “LamborJimmy” project.

“I am pleased to officially inform you that we have chosen Jaime Lozano to head the project for the 2026 World Cup,” said Sisniega. “We did talk to the players, because their opinion is important, but this is only one of the factors that we took into account to make the decision.”

Jimmy Lozano has nothing to prove

Lozano, 44, won the Gold Cup as interim coach following the departure of Diego Cocca, but it’s not his first championship with Mexico.

He led Mexico to a bronze medal finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 2021 with a victory over Japan.

Lozano has now revived a Mexico team which showed no strength at the 2023 CONCACAF Nations League, where they lost to the USMNT in the final.

He becomes the first Mexican head coach to lead El Tri since Miguel Herrera was fired in 2015.

Next games for Jimmy Lozano and El Tri

The next challenge for Lozano is a series of friendly matches, including against Australia (September 9 in Dallas) and Uzbekistan (September 12 in Atlanta).

Mexico will also face Ghana on October 14 and take on Germany three days later.

In a second video, Duilio Davino, who was also ratified as sporting director of El Tri, informed that throughout this process, the national and Olympic teams will work together.

They will take advantage of the fact that Mexico will not participate in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games to offer a wider range of young players for the senior national team.

  • Rafa Marquez slams Tata Martino's Mexico: We're not as big as we think we are

Rafa Marquez slams Tata Martino's Mexico: We're not as big as we think we are

Mexico‘s failure to qualify for the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup has come as a blow to both fans and former members of La Tri.

This is the case of Rafa Marquez. The former captain harshly criticized the national team, calling for a revolution ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

“It is a big blow for Mexican football, to make us realize that we are not what we think we are: we don’t have a good organization, we don’t have good foundations,” Marquez explained on TUDN.

“We have already been overtaken by the United States, Canada has overtaken us without being a major player, so what do we have to do? Start from scratch, pull together and try to develop a plan, because this cannot happen at the next World Cup, where we will be at home.”

Finally, the former Barcelona player pointed out that La Tri had not learned the lesson from the 7-0 drubbing against Chile in 2016.

“It was a wake-up call that we had to do something more, and this today is a slap in the face,” Marquez continued.

“We have to think about what we have to do to have better Mexican football, to be able to develop better players, to be able to bring more Mexican players to Europe and thus be able to grow as a country in football terms.”

  • Canelo Alvarez vs Lionel Messi: the funny web tool that will protect Leo from crossing paths with the angry Mexican boxer

Canelo Alvarez vs Lionel Messi: the funny web tool that will protect Leo from crossing paths with the angry Mexican boxer

After Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarezmade a scandal on social networks for the alleged kick given by Lionel Messi to a shirt of the Mexican team, which Argentina defeated 2-0, the memes, criticisms, comments and others have not been long in coming.

But what Canelo surely did not expect is that a group of fans launched a website that will help Messi to know the distance between him and the Mexican boxer, to avoid meeting him.

    Meet the Messimetral

Canelo threatened Messi after a video went viral in Argentina’s dressing room in which Messi has clothes lying on the floor while he is changing. Among the clothes is a Mexico jersey lying on the floor, and when Messi takes off one of his boots, he moves the Tri shirt, which Alvarez interpreted as disrespectful.

In response, Canelo, in a tweet that has now been deleted for violating Twitter rules, threatened Messi that if he finds him, the Argentine will be in a very bad way.

A couple of days after Canelo has been slammed in social media for his violent messages -not only against Messi but also against anyone who criticizes him-, in Argentina a group of fans found a fun and original solution so that both sportsmen do not cross paths: the Messimetral.

    How does it work?

When you open the page (not available in app), Messimetral shows a map of the world with two locations: the place where Canelo Alvarez is and where Messi is.

The map calculates the distance in kilometers between both athletes and also has a “risk traffic light” that indicates the probability of both of them meeting. At the moment Messi is in Qatar and Canelo -supposedly- is in Zapopan, Jalisco, the distance between them is approximately 14,196 km, so the risk of crossing is low.

We’ll have to see how that data is updated after Argentina’s participation in the World Cup is over, but at least Messi can rest assured that Messimetral will help him avoid running into the very angry Mexican boxer. At least until Canelo cools down.

Such euphoria has been generated by the fight between Canelo and Messi that artist Mojahed Fudailat created the following animated short to make fun of the situation:

  • Tata Martino outrages Mexicans: New photo leaks where he warmly greets Scaloni after the loss to Argentina

Tata Martino outrages Mexicans: New photo leaks where he warmly greets Scaloni after the loss to Argentina

Mexican fans are disillusioned with the national team’s performance in Qatar 2022, first for not taking risks against Poland and now, for the approach taken against Argentina on Saturday, which was always focused on not losing, but without daring to attack.

The man responsible for this is Tata Martino, and he is not very well liked in Mexico.

Martino has been criticized for not being involved enough with his own process. He spnds a lot of time in Argentina, his home country, and that doesn’t sit well with Mexicans.

In fact, he was criticized for expressing himself in an excessively respectful manner after Mexico lost to Argentina.

The speculation that Martino’s actions sparked

That was not all. While Mexico struggles with doubts about what they can do on Wednesday against Saudi Arabia to try to qualify to the second round and consider the process saved, Martino was spotted greeting the Argentina coach, Lionel Scaloni, at the end of Saturday’s match.

In the photo, Martino and Scaloni are smiling, even though Martino does not have much reason to celebrate after the match.

Furthermore, Martino is not concerned about leaving a foundation on which to build for the 2026 World Cup, when Mexico will be one of the three hosts.

  • Lionel Messi: 'We went back to who we are'

Lionel Messi: 'We went back to who we are'

When Argentina needed him the most, Lionel Messi kept his word and didn’t leave his team or their fans stranded, as he scored the first goal during their crucial match against Mexico and assisted Enzo Fernandez for his squad second and definitve goal in the game, which secured their victory with just a few minutes left to play.

Messi had some encouraging words for his team and country

Lionel Messi was named the Man of the Match after he had a not so spectacular but effective game in which a couple of his individual plays allowed Argentina to secure the win in a crucial match to keeping their chances at winning the World Cup alive.

During his post game interview, Messi said that it was a complicated game against Mexico, that has a team that plays well and has a good coach, like Mexico, due to them having good ball handling skills and aren’t afraid to win in time of possession.

“In the first half we played like we needed to do so, with a lot of intensity, then in the second half we settled ourselves on the field and started to touch the ball all over the field, as we went back to who we are. Then the result brings euphoria due to the need we had, we had to get the win to settle ourselves.”

Messi equaled Maradona in World Cup goals

Lionel Messi’s goal against Mexico was his 8th in 21 World Cup games, the same number that the late Argentinian great, Diego Armando Maradona, had in World Cups.

The difference is that Maradona managed to secure a World Cup title for his home country in 1986 and reached the final in 1990, while Messi has only advanced to the final in 2014, but unfortunately lost to Germany, just like Maradona in Italy.

  • Landon Donovan has a very intense and hopeful prediction for the USMNT

Landon Donovan has a very intense and hopeful prediction for the USMNT

The United States National Team (USMNT) is about to debut in Qatar 2022 versus Wales, meanwhile, one of its main historical strikers

    Landon Donovan,

believes that the “Stars and Stripes” will have a historic performance in the Middle East and that they will dispute the title against none other than Brazil.

He is now an analyst for Fox Sports

Donovan, who will be participating in the tournament as a guest analyst for the FOX network, made an exercise to define the teams that will advance, predicted the teams that will qualify to the final rounds, until defining his favorite for champion and, according to his analysis, the USMNT will reach nothing less than the Final, in a path where they will leave out Ecuador in the second round, the defending champion, France, in the quarterfinals and Cameroon in the semifinals.

Donovan believes the USMNT will reach the final game

In the final, they will face Brazil, eventual champions of the tournament. The “Scrath do ouro” will face Spain in the quarterfinals and Argentina in the semifinals.

The LA Galaxy striker’s statement is the response from California to the reckless prediction of another historic player, but from the England national team, Wayne Rooney, who on Friday also assured that the “Team of the Rose” will beat the USMNT in their group stage match.

When and where does the United States make its Qatar 2022 debut?

The US is set to face Wales in Group B in its opener. They will then have the most important matchup of the group stage against England and will close out in a mouthwatering matchup against Iran.

Gregg Berhalter’s team, led by Christian Pulisic and Giovanni Reyna, will debut this Monday, November 21, in Qatar 2022 against Wales at Al Rayyan Stadium. Their second duel will be on November 25 and they will close on Tuesday, November 29.

    “Mexico will suffer”

A connoisseur of soccer in the region, the former Club Len striker pointed out that Mexico will have a tough time and will be left out in the group stage. His argument is not only because they will face a competitive Poland in the dispute for the second available ticket, after Argentina, but he considers that Arabia will advance because they have more support and practically play at home.

Donovan believes that the KSA will surprise and advance to the second round

It is a difficult group. Poland has a killer like Lewandowski, but the most interesting match, for me, is against Saudi Arabia. Because they are next to Qatar and I think they will have 30, 40, 50 thousand fans in the stadium. It will be an away game and not only for Mexico, also for Argentina and Poland. But Mexico is going to advance
