Fans erupt as MI Cape Town crush Sunrisers Eastern Cape by 76 runs to win their maiden SA20 trophy

MI Cape Town clinched their maiden SA20 title with a commanding 76-run victory over two-time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SRH). The team delivered a dominant performance in both batting and bowling to secure the trophy. Trent Boult was named Player of the Match for his exceptional spell, taking 2/9 in four overs. Marco Jansen, with 204 runs and 19 wickets in the tournament, earned the Player of the Series award. The Cape Town posted a challenging total of 181/8 before bundling out Eastern Cape for just 105. Their aggressive approach and disciplined bowling proved too strong for the defending champions. This victory marked a historic moment as the Cape Town lifted their first SA20 trophy in Johannesburg.

MI Cape Town’s strong batting performance

The Cape Town set a solid foundation with Ryan Rickelton‘s aggressive 33 off 15 balls, taking on the powerplay with a strike rate of 220.00. Rassie van der Dussen played a stabilizing role, scoring 23 off 25 balls before falling to Liam Dawson. Reeza Hendricks fell cheaply, but Connor Esterhuizen and Dewald Brevis provided the necessary acceleration. Brevis’ 38 off 18 balls, laced with two fours and four sixes, was a game-changing effort.

George Linde contributed a quick 20, while Delano Potgieter‘s unbeaten 13 ensured the Cape Town crossed 180. Kagiso Rabada added eight late runs, while Rashid Khan and Corbin Bosch departed without scoring. The team’s total of 181/8 at a run rate of 9.05 set up a challenging chase. MI Cape Town capitalized on the momentum, targeting the weaker bowlers in the middle overs.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s struggles with the ball

The Eastern Cape’s bowlers had a mixed outing, with Richard Gleeson leading the attack with 2/22 in four overs at an economy of 5.50. Marco Jansen, despite taking two wickets, conceded 39 runs in his four-over spell. Craig Overton bowled economically in the early phase, picking up one wicket for 31 runs. Liam Dawson was expensive, giving away 40 runs but managed to take two wickets, including the key dismissal of van der Dussen.

Aiden Markram‘s three overs cost 35 runs, with his lone wicket being Connor Esterhuizen. Andile Simelane bowled just one over, conceding 14 runs without success. Despite early breakthroughs, Eastern Cape struggled to contain the Cape Town’s aggressive batting lineup. The bowlers lacked discipline in the death overs, allowing crucial late runs.

    Eastern Cape’s disastrous batting collapse

Chasing 182, the Eastern Cape had a horror start, losing David Bedingham for five in the second over. Jordan Hermann followed soon after for just one, leaving the team struggling at 8/2. Tony de Zorzi and Tom Abell tried to rebuild, adding 57 runs for the third wicket. De Zorzi’s 26 off 23 balls was steady but not enough to shift momentum. Abell top-scored with 30 off 25 balls but fell just when acceleration was needed. Aiden Markram‘s dismissal for six triggered a middle-order collapse. Stubbs’ 15 off 15 was the only other double-digit score as Eastern Cape lost wickets in quick succession. The team slumped from 65/3 to 105 all out in just 18.4 overs.

MI Cape Town’s clinical bowling display

Boult was sensational with the new ball, delivering a spell of 2/9 in four overs at a remarkable economy of 2.25. Rabada was lethal, picking up 4/25 in 3.4 overs, dismantling Eastern Cape’s batting order. Rashid applied pressure in the middle overs, taking 1/19 in his full quota. Linde proved effective, striking twice while conceding only 20 runs. Bosch, despite being expensive, chipped in with a crucial wicket. The disciplined bowling attack maintained relentless pressure, forcing Eastern Cape into errors. The fielding was sharp, with crucial catches taken at key moments. The Cape Town’s bowlers executed their plans perfectly, ensuring a dominant victory.

Dewald Brevis acknowledges spectator after spectacular one-handed catch in SA20 2025

As the Cape Town pushed towards a strong finish against Paarl Royals, Brevis was at the crease, displaying his aggressive stroke play. Facing Mitchell Owen’s delivery on the last ball of the 19th over (18.6), Brevis latched onto a length ball outside off and launched it high and long over the long-on boundary. The ball soared into the night sky, traveling a significant distance before making its way toward the packed stands. The stadium erupted as fans anticipated where the ball would land, with eyes locked onto it.

Amidst the sea of raised hands, one fan stood out. Wearing an MI Cape Town jersey, the spectator positioned himself perfectly underneath the ball and executed a flawless one-handed catch. Without any fumbles or assistance from his body, the fan cleanly grasped the ball with his palm, adhering to the strict criteria set by the Betway Catch 2 Million contest. The moment was captured on the big screen as the crowd roared in approval.

Brevis, noticing the incredible effort from the stands, took a moment to acknowledge the fan’s brilliance. He turned towards the spectator and gave him a thumbs-up, a simple yet heartwarming gesture that added to the special nature of the moment. The cameras zoomed in on the lucky fan, who was visibly ecstatic, realizing that his incredible catch had not only won admiration from the star cricketer but also made him eligible for a massive cash prize.

The SA20’s ‘Betway Catch 2 Million’ prize pool

The catch was not just an ordinary one – it had serious financial stakes. The SA20 League, in collaboration with Betway, introduced the R2 million prize pool for spectators who take a clean one-handed catch off a six during any match. The league’s official rules for the prize state:

    1. The catch must be taken with only one hand.
    2. The ball must not touch any other body part, object, or another person (i.e., it cannot be deflected off a hat, shoulder, chest, or juggled).
    3. The fan must remain within the seating area and complete the catch cleanly.

By executing the perfect grab, the MI Cape Town supporter entered the elite list of fans who had a chance to win a portion of the R2 million jackpot at the end of the tournament.

Batting first, they piled up 199/4, with Ryan Rickelton (44 off 27) and Rassie van der Dussen (40 off 32) setting the tone. Brevis (44 off 30) and Delano Potgieter’s explosive 32 not out off 17 propelled them further.

Dunith Wellalage (2/23) was the lone bright spot for the Royals’ bowling. Chasing 200, the Royals crumbled to 48/4, despite David Miller’s fighting 45 off 26 and Dinesh Karthik’s 31 off 28. Kagiso Rabada (2/18), Rashid Khan (2/33) and Trent Boult (2/38) sealed the win, bowling them out for 160 in 19.4 overs.

    St. George’s Park Pitch Report:

St George’s Park in Gqeberha is renowned for its unpredictable pitch conditions, which can vary dramatically from one match to another. This unpredictability was on full display during the 2024 SA20 season, where the ground saw both high-scoring thrillers, including a match that saw over 400 runs, and low-scoring contests that tested the batsmen’s skills. The venue features two distinct strips: one that typically produces high run totals, while the other offers a more challenging surface where the ball doesn’t come onto the bat as smoothly. Last season, the average first-innings score was 153, with the second innings typically being slightly lower, averaging 145, underscoring the ground’s tendency to favor more difficult, lower-scoring encounters.

    Newlands Cricket Ground Pitch Report:

The pitch at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town is renowned for its balanced nature, providing an ideal contest between bat and ball. Fast bowlers typically find early assistance, with the ball moving under the lights or in overcast conditions. As the match progresses, however, the pitch tends to flatten, allowing batters to play more freely and execute their shots with greater ease. Teams batting second often enjoy an advantage, as the dew factor can make it challenging for the defending side to maintain control. Chasing teams benefit from the ball skidding onto the bat under the evening lights, further tilting the balance in their favor.

    Mumbai wins Irani Cup 2024

Mumbai have clinched the Irani Trophy for the 15th time, marking their first victory in this prestigious tournament in 27 years and reaffirming their dominance as a powerhouse in Indian cricket. After being put to bat first, Mumbai found themselves in a precarious position at 37 for 3, struggling against the Rest of India (ROI) bowlers who capitalized on the swinging conditions. However, the experienced duo of Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer steadied the innings, forming a crucial partnership that turned the tide for Mumbai.

This victory not only showcases Mumbai’s resilience and depth in talent but also celebrates a long-awaited triumph in the Irani Trophy, setting a benchmark for excellence in Indian domestic cricket.
