Feud between PL greats fires up as ‘ignorant’ ‘major tournament’ comments sparks fury

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has taken to social media in an attempt to clarify his controversial comments made about the Africa Cup of Nations on Sky Sports.

Get all the latest football news, highlights and analysis delivered straight to your inbox with Fox Sports Sportmail. Sign up now!!!

Carragher and his fellow pundits Micah Richards, Roy Keane and Daniel Sturridge were discussing Mohamed Salah’s Ballon d’Or credentials as the Liverpool star puts together what Carragher said will “end up being the greatest season we’ve ever seen from an individual”.

But Carragher also said after Liverpool’s 2-0 win at Manchester City that Salah’s chances of winning football’s individual top gong were hindered because the Egyptian does not get the opportunity to play in the Euros or the Copa America.

“I think the problem (is) the fact he’s with Egypt, and he’s probably not playing in the major tournament as such, or maybe got a great chance of winning, I think it’s either the Champions League or the major tournament,” Carragher said on Sky Sports

“Normally, the player who excels in that, like Vini Jr and (Kylian) Mbappe right now – Real Madrid looking really good going for the Champions League.

“Liverpool will be in that conversation, but right now (Real Madrid’s players) are certainly the front runner.”

Richards and Sturridge immediately disputed Carragher’s comments.

“Just to say, AFCON is a major tournament because a lot of people are at home saying, “They aren’t taking it serious”. AFCON is a big tournament, just so you know,” Richards said.

Carragher then responded by posing whether Egypt would be a contender to win the World Cup next year, to which Richards replied: “No, but AFCON is big, isn’t it? You remember when him and Mané was going for it.”

Carragher responded by saying “oh god”, prompting Sturridge to step in.

“It’s a fact. It’s a fact. It’s a fact. If you win the Euros or Copa América it’s deemed to be big so the AFCON is in the same level,” the former Liverpool and Chelsea striker said.

Carragher has been slammed on social media for his remarks, including from Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand.

The former England centre backs have a history of public spats, and this time Ferdinand blasted Carragher on his YouTube channel for his “ignorant” take.

“I think [what he said] is representative of most of the people out there. But I don’t think that’s right. It’s an ignorant thought process,” Ferdinand said.

“If you go to Didier Drogba, Abedi Pele , Samuel Eto, Riyad Mahrez, Mo Salah or Sadio Mane, they’ll tell you, “We have to win this” – there’s demand in their country to win this.

“Yes, it doesn’t get backed resources-wise like the Euros but that doesn’t mean you have to devalue it. It should be respected more than it is.

“I understand what Jamie’s saying but I don’t agree with it. That’s the majority’s fault and its not right.

“I think the federations like FIFA need to make sure they implement language around AFCON so it equals the Euros and the Copa America.

“Jamie is right in what he is saying. If Salah won AFCON that would have no bearing on anyone when they vote for the Ballon d’Or, which is absolutely wrong.”

Carragher called Ferdinand “a clown” in response, commenting on his Instagram post saying “I didn’t say that you clown, stop playing to the gallery like you always do”.

He also posted on X to try clarify his comments.

“The point I was trying to make yesterday was that MO Salah is at a disadvantage playing for Egypt in terms of him winning the Balon d’Or,” Carragher said.

“If Salah had an average season at LFC but won the AFCON & was MVP I don’t think he would win the Balon d’Or.

“Because I don’t think AFCON carries the weight of other tournaments. But if Mbappe had an average season at Real Madrid but won the World Cup/Euros he would still have a great opportunity.

“It’s not just about certain tournaments, Shevchenko (Ukraine) Lewandowski (Poland) were never going to win the WC/Euros to help their case for the prize. I don’t think it’s controversial at all really it’s just a fact.

“I know Mane came 2nd a few years back after winning the tournament but that alone wouldn’t have got him to that position, it was LFC being two games away from a quadruple that played a big role also.

“It’s not disrespectful if I feel the WC/Euros/CP are better tournaments it’s just my opinion when I watch them. Saying it wasn’t a major competition was clumsy but I think most people watching could understand the point I was trying to make.

“The face I pulled when Micah interjected was nothing to do with the merits of the tournament, I just knew as soon as he did what the reaction was going to be! I get a lot people didn’t like what I said & that’s fine.

“I don’t normally respond to things on here with posts like this but I decided to tweet in the end after seeing so many phonies jumping on the bandwagon & playing to the gallery when they knew what I meant. Good luck MO you little dancer.”

The Confederation of African Football’s social media accounts have also taken digs at Carragher, with several posts referring to this year’s AFCON in Morocco being a “major tournament”.

‘Too good’ – Richards pinpoints moment he knew Mo Salah would become a superstar

    Micah Richards – talent scout?

The ex-Manchester City defender is adamant he knew how good Mohamed Salah was going to be before all of us.

Salah added yet another goal and assist for Liverpool in a comfortable 2-0 win over Manchester City to put the Reds 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Two more goal involvements make it 41 for the season (25 goals, 16 assists) and Salah is now just six more from the best-ever Premier League campaign.

Now widely considered an all-time great of English football, such a rise never looked possible during a failed 18-game stint at Chelsea from 2013 to 2014.

However, shortly after that, on loan at Fiorentina, then teammate Richards could tell how good the Egyptian kind was.

    read more on mohamed salah

“We knew he was special though, even at Basel, when he went to Fiorentina, then at Roma,” Richards said after the match.

“It obviously didn’t work for him at Chelsea but when he came to the Premier League with Liverpool I just knew.”

With his fellow pundits showing some scepticism, Richards continued: “Honestly, there’s an interview where I say this player is too good for Fiorentina, we shouldn’t have him.

“He came there on loan and I just knew how special he was. His touch, his technique, how selfish he was in front of goal.

“We went to Juventus in the Coppa Italia and he ran for 40 or 50 yards against some of the best defenders in the league at the time, I just knew he was special.”

Salah is the current favourite to win the 2025 Ballon d’Or with Liverpool not just top in England, but they were the best team in the league phase of the Champions League, and have a Carabao Cup final date against Newcastle next month.

Fiorentina set to sign Chelsea star Mohamed Salah on loan

Richards knew we were witnessing greatness back at Fiorentina

Comparing Salah to other greats on the list of best-ever seasons, Manchester United legend Roy Keane explained what Salah’s got that the likes of Thierry Henry, Luis Suarez and Didier Drogba also had.

“They’re all strikers, but we still class Salah as a winger,” he began. “I think if you’re going to be successful at any big club you do need that one world class player.

“You can have brilliant players around you, but whether it’s [Eric] Cantona, [Wayne] Rooney, [Cristiano] Ronaldo, you need that one player who’s almost ahead of everyone else to get you over the line and make the difference in tight games and Salah does that week-in, week-out.”

Jamie Carragher also gave his view, adding: “This is going to end up being the greatest season we’ve ever seen from an individual, I have no doubt about that.

“It’s not whether he finishes above those players numbers, it’s how far, and if he sets the bar so high that in the future nobody can get there again.

“We are seeing something special, this is an all-time season.”

  • Dyche’s X-rated response to question on Klopp fight has Richards in stitches

Dyche’s X-rated response to question on Klopp fight has Richards in stitches

Micah Richards burst into laughter over Sean Dyche’s emphatic response to his question about a hypothetical fight with Jurgen Klopp.

Former Burnley boss Dyche was involved in a feisty exchange with the legendary Liverpool manager at Anfield in 2021.

When walking down the tunnel at half-time in Burnley’s eventual 1-0 Premier League win, he appeared to say something towards Klopp.

Dyche’s managerial counterpart looked back in shock and fired back by seemingly shouting and furiously waving his hand.

The pair continued their verbal exchange before separating in what is one of the Premier League’s most entertaining touchline moments.

Appearing on A League of Their Own, Dyche watched it back and was asked about what was said by host Romesh Ranganathan between him and Klopp.

    MORE ON THE PREMIER LEAGUE

Dyche jokingly responded: “I just said, ‘Do you mind not using such bad language in front of these young players?”

Dyche later added: “I’m not going to tell you what I really said, am I?”

Panellist and former Manchester City star Richards was on the same team as Dyche and was curious about his chances in a fight against Klopp.

“You think you could have him though?” he asked, with the manager then confidently replying: “F****** obvs [obviously].”

Richards was left in stitches, with Dyche clearly optimistic despite the clear height difference between him and Klopp.

Both managers played down the spat afterwards, although it was clear to see that tensions were high during it.

“You know when we come to these places, you know we are allowed to actually fight,” Dyche said.

“We are allowed to actually try and win, that’s all it was.”

“I said absolutely nothing that should be out the norm,” he added.

“It’s just two managers fighting for their teams, wanting to win a game. There’s nothing wrong with that.”

Klopp then said: “If he’s not talking about it, I will not talk about it. I didn’t start it, but it’s nothing, all good.”

Dyche left Burnley over a year later and returned to management with Everton at the beginning of 2023.

The 53-year-old steered the Toffees away from relegation but was sacked last month following a poor run of form.

His dismissal was announced just hours before Everton’s FA Cup clash against Peterborough United, which they won 2-0.

The real reason behind Man City’s stunning implosion and stars on chopping block — UK View

Having dominated English football under Pep Guardiola, Manchester City is suddenly winless since October and all but out of the Premier League title race after a 2-0 loss to arch rival Liverpool.

City trail the Reds by 11 points after just 13 games. So how — the loss of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri aside — did it come to this?

Here is what the UK press is saying, amid widespread shock over the club’s downfall.

Writing for The Times, Martin Samuel said that: “Shorn of their protector Rodri, Guardiola’s City have aged quicker than pears left adjacent to a bunch of bananas.”

Yet he primarily blamed the ageing of the team, singling out Kyle Walker’s loss of pace, and criticised City’s failure to retain young talent. He said the team was clearly in downturn despite the mighty Premier League achievements that Guardiola referred to with his six-finger gesture at Anfield.

“…The decline of certain individuals is obvious. As are some missteps by Guardiola himself. With age an increasing problem, the young talent that has been allowed to leave the club is regrettable. Cole Palmer is the most obvious loss, although Guardiola’s champions might argue no one was saying that the year he departed and City went on to win a fourth straight title,” Samuel wrote.

“But, actually, they were. Palmer’s form on his immediate arrival at Chelsea always suggested he could have found a place at City and just because a team win the league doesn’t mean they cannot be improved. Equally, could City have fought harder to keep 24-year-old Julián Álvarez, who, while a club-record sale, was such an important part of the success last season? Even if Atletico Madrid’s £81.8million was too good to turn down, why also allow Liam Delap to join Ipswich Town? Guardiola’s preference for a small squad is well known, but the burden heaped on Erling Haaland looks increasingly unsustainable.”

Writing for talkSPORT, Henry Winter said that City had gone from “Invincibles to Invisibles … riddled with self-doubt”. He said that a squad clear-out was needed.

“This is Guardiola’s greatest challenge: reviving City,” Winter wrote.

“Time has caught up with some like Kyle Walker, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva. A relentless workload has temporarily drained others like Phil Foden.

“City need new blood, new energy. The winds of change may only be felt positively through an open transfer window and Guardiola’s coaching and man-management.

“Too many of his players look stuck in quick-sand and he’s struggling to pull them out.

“City weren’t beaten by moments of sublime skill. They were beaten in the application of the basics. Liverpool wanted the ball more. They wanted victory more. And that should embarrass City.

“Yes, they’re missing Rodri, their most important player, but they have so much talent, so many serial title winners, but all underperforming, barring honourable exceptions like Nathan Ake, Ruben Dias and Rico Lewis.”

Writing for the Daily Mail, Sami Mokbel said that Crystal Palace and England midfielder Adam Wharton was at the top of Man City’s shopping list for the January transfer window – but would be hard to get.

“Crystal Palace have no intention of selling Adam Wharton in January amid growing interest in the England midfielder,” Mokbel wrote.

“Manchester City are among the Premier League clubs monitoring Wharton’s situation closely ahead of the winter transfer window.

“The 20-year-old’s season has been dogged by a groin injury that eventually required surgery which won’t see him return until Palace’s clash versus Brighton on December 15 at the earliest.”

Speaking on the latest episode of his The Rest Is Football podcast, England great Gary Lineker and former Man City defender Micah Richards questioned whether all was well between Guardiola and superstar midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.

“De Bruyne came on again with not long to go when the game was pretty much done. Yeah, he nearly got a goal because of [Virgil] van Dijk’s error, but is there something going on there, do you think? Because he’s been coming on for five or 10 minutes, what, for about a month now?” Lineker said.

“You would imagine he’s getting fitter, even though I saw both of them – Pep Guardiola and De Bruyne – make interesting statements in the week, where it seems like all’s not well between those two? I don’t know. I’ve got no inside information whatsoever. The ambassador of Manchester City might, though… Micah?”

Richards laughed off the segue but said: “I think you’re right. There’s got to be some context to it… this goes back [to] before the international break. De Bruyne got some minutes, but after the international break, he didn’t start and then hasn’t started again. But he’s one who can unlock a door.

“We know with Kevin De Bruyne, you’ve got to wrap him in cotton wool … but a big game like this, I thought [Guardiola] was sort of saving him for this game. But even just the talks, [De Bruyne] potentially going to Saudi at the end of the year … it looks to me like there’s some sort of rift gong on between them.”

Writing for The Telegraph, Oliver Brown said that Guardiola cut a Jose Mourinho-like figure with his six-finger salute to Reds fans.

“Engulfed by strife, Pep Guardiola can do little but resort to the antics of a man who is his antithesis. The six-fingered salute Guardiola performed as a rebuke to Liverpool fans, denoting six titles in seven years to confound their taunts that he would be “sacked in the morning”, was taken straight from the Jose Mourinho playbook. For good measure, he did it again for the City supporters’ benefit, even as they stood reeling at the sudden fallibility of a figure whose wisdom they worship.

“There could scarcely be a more striking illustration of the turmoil in Guardiola’s mind. As another limp, gaffe-riddled performance by his team ate away at his soul, he looked as if he had no idea how to arrest the slide. And so he channelled classic Mourinho, the preening rival he used to disdain as “el puto jefe, el puto amo” (“the f—— boss, the f—— master”). True, the six fingers were held up with a smile rather than a Jose-esque snarl. But the subtext was similar: first he showed that the Kop’s chanting was ruffling his feathers, then he urged even his own disciples to remember his body of work.”

Pep taunts Reds crowd after loss | 00:19

Writing for The Guardian, Jonathan Wilson delved into what it might take for the unthinkable to happen, while alluding to the looming outcome of 115 Premier League charges regarding alleged breaches of league financial rules.

“Could Guardiola be sacked? It seems unthinkable. For most of the past 16 years he has been obviously the best coach in the world. Long before he got to City, the club was built to his vision. To break from that would be a seismic act for the club’s owners, far greater than, say, Leicester offloading Claudio Ranieri or Chelsea dismissing José Mourinho in the months after they won a title, especially as City fight the Premier League charges.

“But equally, history shows that once the magic has gone in football, it is very hard to get it back (look at Inter in 1966-67, dominant and seemingly en route to a Treble only, abruptly to lose form, winning only two of their final 11 games of the season to end up with nothing; Helenio Herrera was given another season, in which they finished fifth).

“In a month, City’s aura has vanished, but who realistically looks a better candidate than Guardiola to restore it? So long as he feels sufficiently energised, he will surely be afforded that opportunity. But what resources he has to do that will probably depend, like so much else, on the outcome of the Premier League charges against the club.”

  • Man City and Arsenal heroes try to reignite Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira rivalry

Man City and Arsenal heroes try to reignite Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira rivalry

Ahead of Man City vs Arsenal an old rival almost returned to our screens as Micah Richards and Theo Walcott played with fire.

On Sky Sports, the pair were part of a stacked studio line-up for the game and were joined by Manchester United icon Roy Keane.

    2

And before the crunch Premier League clash they were all joined by Gunners icon Patrick Vieira on a video link from Chicago.

Quickly, though, ex-Man City star Richards attempted to reignite the feud he once had on-pitch with Keane as he jokingly goaded the Frenchman.

Richards said: “Patrick! Big Meeks here. How’s the atmosphere in Chicago? Are you missing us?

“I’ve got your mate (Keane) in the studio here with us. Why are you not here? Are you scared? Running scared? What’s happening?”

And swiftly he got a response.

“I can’t be in the same room that Roy Keane is, so it’s better being in Chicago,” Vieira Joked.

    Richards added: “Who started this?”

Before Walcott chimed in: “He’s not kicked me yet but I want to know who kicked more, him or you, Patrick? Who started the famous debate, shall we say?”

And Vieira wasn’t going to shirk the fun scenario unfolding and he gave those back at the Eithad a big laugh.

He replied: “I think he was the one who started it because he was always scared of me and every time that he was facing me he was quite scared of the quality and the challenges I was giving him.”

Richards and Walcott were trying to rile Keane and Vieira

Keane had been quietly watching the banter go on around him and finally chose the perfect moment to have his say.

“Patrick, you know I was never scared of you. You are kidding yourself,” he spoke with quiet authority.

And Walcott swiftly tried to change the subject, adding: “Patrick, I’m actually terrified of Roy right now, we’ve definitely stirred the pot.”

Roy Keane and David Beckham square up to a young Zlatan Ibrahimovic for aiming headbutt at Manchester United teammate Phil Neville

Keane and Vieira are now pretty pally compared to their playing days when they had a fierce battle spanning 12 matches in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

On one occasion between Arsenal and Manchester United, the pair almost battled in the tunnel.

“I could hear these footsteps behind me and Vieira shouting, ‘Neville! Neville! You’re not going to kick our players out on this pitch today,’” Neville recalled.

“Roy obviously turned back, heard him and started having a go at him. He (Vieira) sort of squirted his water bottle towards Roy, then all hell broke loose.”

“I just felt they were bullying Gary,” Keane later reflected in his book The Second Half. “I don’t think it was intimidation; it was bullying.”

He added: “I was there to do a job. ‘Win the game – get in and get out’. But it was a bit like the build-up to a boxing match – the weigh-in, the press conferences – when people forget that there’ll actually be a fight.

“I think football might lack that energy now, a bit; that tension. It was great. But years later people bring up the tunnel and they don’t remember the match that came after it.”

  • Shearer wouldn’t change Rashford criticism as he cites ‘simple’ solution

Shearer wouldn’t change Rashford criticism as he cites ‘simple’ solution

Premier League legend Alan Shearer has insisted he wouldn’t change any of the constructive criticism he’s given Marcus Rashford.

The Manchester United forward scored his first goal in 189 days on Saturday, bagging the Red Devils’ second goal in their 3-0 win away at Southampton.

    4

The 26-year-old’s goal came off the back of a difficult spell on the pitch.

He was left out of England’s squad for Euro 2024, and again for the Nations League clashes against the Republic of Ireland and Finland this month.

Last week, as per the i, an inside source claimed Rashford felt like he was being ‘bullied’ by ex-Premier League stars who have commented on him struggling to emulate the electric form he had in 2022/23 that saw him bag 30 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.

But when Shearer, Gary Lineker and Micah Richards discussed Rashford on their latest episode of The Rest Is Football Podcast, Shearer praised the former England star for his goal, but still doubled down on his previous take.

Lineker said: “We talked about Rashford – and there’s been a little bit of a leak that says that Marcus Rashford’s not happy with the criticism that he’s been receiving.

“They think it’s a bit unfair – particularly from ex-players, ex-Manchester United players as well.

“You’ve been one of them Alan, we covered it shortly because we never have that much time on Match of the Day. What do you think?”

Shearer then responded: “I wouldn’t change anything that I’ve said.

“He’s set his own very high standards, you know? He’s a very good player – he’s on a huge contract at Manchester United and he hasn’t played as well as he can do or has done in the past.

“And when that is the case – at a big football club when you’re a big name – you’re going to get criticised.

Shearer didn't back down on his previous constructive criticism

“And he did – but he doesn’t get criticised for performances like yesterday, you know? When he’s tracking back and running, and taking players on and scoring his goal.

“He looked a really good player yesterday.”

Manchester United legend Nicky Butt tells Marcus Rashford to leave the club to save his career

Shearer went on to suggest a simple solution to stop the criticism.

“He’s now got to do that for the rest of the season,” he said, referring to his performance at St Mary’s.

“There was a reason I said it last night. There’s a reason why he wasn’t in the England squad.

“It’s not just the pundits who were critical of him. Other players have overtaken him from where he was a couple of years ago and there’s no doubt that there’s the talent in there, but that has to be a regular.

He had an improved performance on Saturday

    4

He had an improved performance on Saturday

“That has to be every single week, and not just against Southampton as it was. And then he won’t get criticised. Pretty simple isn’t it?”

Shearer didn’t mince his words when he assessed Rashford’s performance in the 2-1 defeat to Brighton before the international break.

Rashford found himself offside at the AMEX, and despite Lineker giving him credit for looking to try and make runs, Shearer wasn’t having it.

“Yeah, but he’s not a youngster anymore,” he said. “He has to understand the position and look across the pitch when you can see the whole of it, you shouldn’t be offside then.”

Mikel Oyarzabal’s 86th minute dagger secured a 2-1 victory in the Euro 2024 final for Spain, ensuring England’s 58-year trophy drought would remain intact for at least another two years.

The loss also meant England became the first team to lose consecutive European championship finals, having lost on penalties to Italy at Euro 2021.

Six players who started the final were back three years on in Berlin, but there’s also another individual involved in both games that will undoubtedly dominate the headlines over the coming days: Gareth Southgate.

It is no secret Southgate’s contract with the Football Association (FA) expires in December, meaning Euro 2024 could very well have been his last time in charge.

A report by The Telegraph claimed the FA wanted to extend Southgate’s deal through to the 2026 World Cup regardless of the result against Spain, but the 53-year-old is ultimately the only one who can decide what happens next.

The statistics of Southgate’s time in charge paint one of incredible success.

Since taking over from Roy Hodgson, Southgate has guided England to two Euro finals plus a semi final and quarterfinal appearance at the 2018 and 2022 World Cup respectively.

“We made it clear we love the manager, but that’s his decision [whether he wants to stay on],” Kane said.

“Now’s not the time to talk about it. It’s down to him, he’ll go away and think about it. But we’re all just hurting.”

Even prior to the final, star midfielder Declan Rice revealed “the lads would love him to stay on until 2026, there is no doubt about that.”

“The way he looks after us, how calm he is, how he is as a man-manager, how he is on the training pitch with us, he’s top,” Rice added.

“Whatever he wants to do, whatever makes him happy, I’m sure he’ll make the right decision. But I’m sure he’s got the backing of everyone to stay.”

However, the counterargument from many is that Southgate could, and perhaps should, have done more with the talent at his disposal.

Despite being blessed with attacking stars like Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer, England still registered a lower xG (6.43) than Croatia (7.10), who were knocked out at the group stage.

Kane was also a shadow of himself throughout the tournament, with the England skipper often looking lethargic as games wore on.

In fact, Kane registered just 13 touches in the 60 minutes he was on the pitch in the final, with only one of touches in the opposition box.

Southgate was also bailed out by some late, late goals from England.

Jude Bellingham’s remarkable bicycle kick in the 95th minute ensured the Three Lions would take Slovakia to extra time in their Round of 16 clash.

Ollie Watkins put England into the final with a 90th minute winner against the Netherlands.

Granted, there is an argument to be made that this never-say-die mentality had been drilled into the players by Southgate and he deserves the plaudits for that.

But if England had dominated those games, perhaps there would never have been a need for those late heroics.

For ex-England internationals Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, it is Southgate’s supposed negative football that held the team back in those big moments.

It’s also why they believe now is the perfect time for Southgate to move on.

“There will be great disappointment at home,” Shearer told the BBC.

“They could have played more attacking football but they got to the final. But when you are there, you have got to get over the line.

“The reality is, Southgate got us to a final three years ago and got us to a final here, and hasn’t won. That will hurt him and maybe he will think it’s time for someone else.”

Richards believed England had “the best squad” but not “the best team”.

When quizzed by former England marksman Gary Lineker why that was the case, Richards’ response was telling.

“Because we have a manager who’s been successful being defensive,” Richards told the BBC.

“Getting into a semi-final of a World Cup, two Euros [finals], not being able to push this team forward in the way it deserves.

“And that’s no slight on Southgate, that’s just his tactics. Now, we have to move forward in the right direction and play the football these players play at club level.”

Respected football writer Henry Winter also believed the Euro 2024 final should be Southgate’s last act.

“Huge respect for Southgate for how he’s got players enjoying turning up for England again, for the unity he’s created, for his quiet dignity, work on penalty “process” and record of getting England to two finals,” Winter wrote on X.

“He’s handled the pressure of the so-called “impossible job” well. But the game is also about entertaining, and England underwhelmed.

“It’s also about trophies, especially when he has such a talented collection of players to call on. Southgate’s had four goes, four tournaments, so, yes, it’s time for him to go.”

The Guardian’s Barney Ronay echoed Winter’s sentiment.

“The age of Gareth Southgate, eight years in the making, might just be teetering very close to the edge now,” Ronay wrote.

If Southgate does end up leaving, attention will quickly turn to who his replacement may be.

As Winter pointed out in his post, if the FA opt for another English manager, “the field is thin.”

Graham Potter is the most high-profile option immediately available having turned down jobs since being sacked from Chelsea in 2023, while Newcastle boss Eddie Howe reportedly has admirers within the FA.

Southgate was asked about his future in the immediate aftermath of the defeat to Spain and remained noncommittal, but did concede that had England’s journey ended earlier, his decision would be a lot easier.

“The way my emotions have gone over the last five weeks, it would be ridiculous for me to think about anything beyond this game,” Southgate said.

“We’ve got time to make decisions and I won’t need weeks but also I think I’ve earned the right to give myself a few days just to think things through.

“I know where it would have been if we went out in the group stage, that’s for sure. I have a pretty good idea in my head. I don’t think that would necessarily have been my choice.”

Regardless of Southgate’s next move, he deserves tremendous credit for how he transformed England’s fortunes on the international stage.

But with two defeats in a final to his name, it seems the 53-year-old simply is not the man to lift the Three Lions over that imposing last hurdle.

Roy Keane laughs as Theo Walcott mocked by Micah Richards on Mohamed Salah miss

Theo Walcott was brutally mocked by Michah Richards during half time of Liverpool’s game against Brighton.

The former Arsenal man was assessing Mohamed Salah‘s missed chances in the opening 45 minutes of the Reds’ 2-1 win over the Seagulls when he became Richards‘ target.

Salah had seven shots in the first half without success, but it was one strike in particular that led to the exchange.

Dominik Szoboszlai slipped the Egyptian forward in on goal, and he hit a tame first-time effort straight at Bart Verbruggen.

Speaking on Sky Sports over the top of the clip, Walcott said: “This is where Mo Salah is at his best when he’s running from deep.

“You can see what he’s trying to do, but again, he scuffs it.”

Super Sunday host David Jones then asked the ex-England forward to expand on his comment.

Walcott jokingly said: “He’s trying to do a Theo Walcott finish.”

Richards interrupted and shut his fellow presenter down by saying: “He did the Theo Walcott finish.”

This provoked huge laughter from everyone in the studio, even Roy Keane was chuckling along.

Of course, it was a brutal putdown, but it was intended and received as a joke.

Away from the studio, Salah finally found his shooting boots in the second period, as he scored what proved to be the winner.

Alexis Mac Allister played a pass to him in the box, and on his favoured left foot, he whipped a low shot into the bottom corner.

This win temporarily moves the Reds to the top of the Premier League table before Manchester City and Arsenal clash.

Brighton actually opened the scoring against Jurgen Klopp‘s men at Anfield inside the first two minutes through an excellent Danny Welbeck strike.

Luis Diaz hauled the hosts level before Salah bounced back from his earlier misses to seal a big three points.

  • ‘Why would you even say that?’: Classy response after Liverpool legend’s awkward joke falls flat

‘Why would you even say that?’: Classy response after Liverpool legend’s awkward joke falls flat

Kate Abdo was all class on Thursday morning as she addressed an awkward comment from Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher on live television.

Carragher caused controversy on Wednesday during the broadcast of Arsenal’s Champions League win over Porto when he appeared to jokingly question Abdo’s loyalty to her partner Malik Scott.

The comments in question came after Bukayo Saka suggested Carragher don an Arsenal shirt, with the former Liverpool defender following through with the star Gunners forward’s request.

But Carragher then went on to urge co-hosts Micah Richards and Abdo also wear the jersey, to which the latter declined on the basis of being “loyal” to Manchester United.

    “I’m loyal,” Abdo said.

    “To who?” Carragher asked.

“Manchester United, thank you very much,” Abdo responded.

That is when Carragher crossed the line, jokingly replying: “Not to Malik”.

Malik, in this instance, being Abdo’s partner, who is a former professional boxer and now the trainer for Deontay Wilder.

“What? Why would you even say that?” a stunned Abdo said in response.

Abdo indirectly addressed the incident while broadcasting Thursday’s Champions League fixtures and drew widespread praise for her professionalism.

“After yesterday’s road trip to the Emirates, we are back home in our Champions League studio here in London. Good to be here. I am Kate Abdo,” she opened.

“This group, we have been together for three-and-a-half-years, I think, and I grew up with a brother, and doing this show I feel like I’ve gained three more here at the desk. Three more brothers.

“So let me introduce you to the group again. Thierry Henry, of course, the golden child, can do no wrong, always says the right thing. Sets the example for the rest of us. Can he be intimidating? Yes he can, but he is the big brother we all look up to and aspire to, Thierry.

“Then there is the middle child, Jamie Carragher, chip on his shoulder, capable of saying anything for attention. Does he go too far sometimes? Absolutely. Does he apologise? Yes he does. But all of us have that one annoying family member that we still love and accept.

“And then there’s little bro. Loud but loveable. Micah Richards. Easy to pick on, impossible not to love. And everybody’s favourite. And like a good family, we stick together. Another day, another show.”

‘I feel sick’ – Stunned Jamie Carragher finds out about Luton goal on live TV

Jamie Carragher was in the worst place to discover Luton had gone ahead against Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night.

The Reds legend was in between an Arsenal hero and a former Manchester City star respectively in Thierry Henry and Micah Richards.

Working for CBS on their Champions League coverage, news quickly reached the trio about a shock goal in the Premier League title race.

Luton star Chiedoze Ogbene pounced on a rebound at the back post to put the relegation-threatened Hatters in front at the home of the league leaders.

Liverpool hit back with four second-half goals to win 4-1 but, for a brief moment, Carragher was sweating.

Richards shouted: “I have breaking news in the title race. Liverpool, zero. Luton, uno.”

Carragher took a moment to process the news and left the CBS crew in stitches with his response.

“Is it?” the former defender said with a tone of pure dejection.

Henry and Richards both burst into laughter at their colleague, who shook his head in disbelief.

    “I feel sick,” Carragher added.

Liverpool are now four points clear of Manchester City and five points ahead of Arsenal, who have both played one game less.

Later in the broadcast, Richards decided to toy with Carragher by feeding him inaccurate updates.

Micah Richards claims that PSG star Kylian Mbappe has more of an aura than Thierry Henry ever had

“Oh my God, it’s 2-2!” the former defender said to Carragher, before quickly adding: “Nah, only joking.”

The Reds legend can breathe easily now ahead of the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea on Sunday.
