Massive heat on misfiring Liverpool star; spicy twist to Manchester derby — EPL pressers

Arne Slot insisted Darwin Nunez is still an important part of Liverpool’s plans despite the struggling striker falling below the “standard” in the Champions League win against Girona.

Mired in a lengthy slump, Nunez has scored only one goal in his last 10 appearances and three in total all season.

In Liverpool’s victory in Girona on Tuesday, the Uruguay international cut an increasingly frustrated figure after missing several chances.

Slot admitted he kept Nunez on for an extended period, before eventually replacing him in the 71st minute, in the hope he would score a confidence-boosting goal.

After receiving criticism in midweek, Nunez posted on Instagram: “They are not all, they are some. Thank you Reds for your support, we are all still together.”

Slot believes the 25-year-old needs the support of fans and his team-mates to help him rediscover the form that made him such a sensation at Benfica prior to his move to Anfield in 2022.

“All our players feel the support of our fans but he is definitely one of them. Mo (Salah) is scoring so many goals he likes the support of the fans but doesn’t really need it at the moment,” Slot told reporters on Friday.

“We all saw they did something with him when he missed a few chances on Tuesday and everyone needs an arm around you, either from a team-mate, the fans or your manager.

“But I also made it clear to him that he is not only judged on the goals he scores, he is also judged on the team performance and he adds something to the team performance as well with his work-rate and how much he does winning the ball back high up the pitch.”

Slot’s only issue with Nunez was a dip in his work-rate against Girona that drew a rebuke from the Reds boss.

“Ideally he would have scored a few goals more. But what should always be there is work-rate and I think that is what he has, apart from two games,” Slot said.

“I said that to him yesterday and the last half-hour against Girona wasn’t of the standard he should have.

“That had a lot to do with him being disappointed at missing a few chances.”

Nunez’s position will come under increasing pressure with Diogo Jota and long-term absentee Federico Chiesa set to return to the squad for the visit of Fulham on Saturday.

Chiesa has played for just 18 minutes in the Premier League since joining Liverpool from Juventus in the close-season.

The Italy forward has only three appearances in all competitions for the Reds, who sit four points clear at the top of the Premier League as they chase a first title since 2020.

“Federico missed quite a lot for a long time, was ill last week, so we have to wait and see how he is exactly doing,” Slot said.

“But maybe Diogo is in the squad and maybe Federico as well, but that depends a bit on the numbers we have and also how he recovered from his illness.”

    MANCHESTER UNITED

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim insists he did not speak to Manchester City about replacing Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium before making his move to Old Trafford.

As Amorim prepares for his first Manchester derby on Sunday, the 39-year-old’s link to City prior to his arrival at United has become a hot topic.

United hired the highly-regarded Amorim from Sporting Lisbon in November after sacking Erik ten Hag.

Amorim had been mentioned as a contender to take over from Guardiola after City announced Sporting’s director of football Hugo Viana would replace Txiki Begiristain at the end of this season.

Guardiola eventually ended speculation over his future by signing a new two-year contract shortly after Amorim’s arrival in Manchester.

Asked if he ever had a conversation about the prospect of joining City, Amorim told reporters: “Never. Never had and this was my only option.

“When Manchester United talked to me, I had no doubts because I had already something in my mind that it could be a possibility.

“With Manchester City or Hugo Viana? Nothing about that.”

Amorim’s side ended a run of two successive defeats with a 2-1 victory at Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on Thursday.

But United have won just three of Amorim’s six games in charge and are languishing in 13th place after recent losses to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest underlined the extent of the rebuilding job he faces.

Yet, for the first time in years, City go into the derby mired in more turmoil than United after a dismal run of one win in 10 games in all competitions.

Rival EPL boss defends “under-fire” Ange | 02:30

Wednesday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat at Juventus was City’s seventh loss in their last 10 matches, an astonishing decline for a club that has won the last four Premier League titles.

One of those losses was masterminded by Amorim, whose Sporting side enjoyed a 4-1 Champions League triumph over City.

“I never think about these things,” Amorim said of City’s woes. “We will face a great opponent and I’m more focused on our problems, so we have a lot of issues here.

“I’m more focused on what we should do on Sunday to win the game, so I’m really focused on my team.”

Asked if United are facing a different, weaker City, he said: “No, no, no, no. “The great teams can respond in any moment, and I think they are in a better place than us in the type of understanding the game, the way they play, the confidence they have. Even in these kind of moments.”

City may be struggling but they still enter the weekend fourth in the Premier League, eight points better off than their neighbours.

“I just want to improve the team, so I cannot live it like a normal derby like it should be, like two great teams fighting for the title. It is not that in this moment,” Amorim said.

“Both teams are struggling in the moment, so I hope in future I can feel that real feeling of a derby, but I know it’s really important for our fans.

“But my goal now is to improve the team, win games and I will try to win this game.”

    MANCHESTER CITY

Pep Guardiola admits troubled Manchester City will not recapture their peak form until his injury-plagued side are finally whole again.

Guardiola’s fourth-placed side head into Sunday’s derby against Manchester United reeling after a dismal run of one win in 10 games in all competitions.

A 2-0 defeat at Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday left City in danger of failing to make the last 16, while they are languishing eight points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

After winning an unprecedented four successive Premier League titles and six in the last seven seasons, City have looked more vulnerable than ever before in the Guardiola era.

The City boss attributes their stunning decline on injuries to key players, mostly notably Spain midfielder Rodri, who won the prestigious Ballon d’Or award earlier this year.

Rodri, who helped Spain win Euro 2024, is not expected back from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee for several months, although he has hinted he could feature at some point this season.

“What I want is my players back. The complete squad we had at the beginning of the season. My regret is that we don’t have these and not needing new ones,” Guardiola told reporters on Friday.

“We have known it from the beginning but Rodri is a Ballon d’Or player. We are playing without the best player in England last season. That is the problem.

“Not one other team plays with a central midfielder who has a Ballon d’Or. It is difficult. The moment he comes back, we will be strong again. We will be a good team.

“Of course, we still have to try and play the same way and to win. Sooner or later we are going to be back.”

With City mired in such a woeful period, the champions have been linked with new signings in the January transfer window.

On the day City announced record Premier League revenues of £715 million. Guardiola didn’t rule out the possibility when it was put to him that reinforcements were needed to save their season.

“If we need players then we go to the transfer market but I don’t know who is around,” he said.

“Massive congratulations on the accounts because the club must be sustainable. That doesn’t mean we have big resources to buy whatever we want, especially with how expensive the transfer market is.”

Beating United at the Etihad Stadium this weekend would be a significant boost to Guardiola’s hopes of ending City’s spiral.

The Spaniard, who recently signed a new two-year contract, vowed to solve City’s crisis eventually and claimed he was not feeling under pressure.

“In our jobs we will always do our best and when the best doesn’t happen you are more uncomfortable than when the situation is going well. As a manager you are in scrutiny for every step of the team,” he said.

“But I am fine. I have more thoughts at this moment but what I feel right now is the same as what I’ve said for the last few weeks or month.

“We have to shoot more and cut out the mistakes. But we have been in the games.

“We have not been consistent for the 90 minutes but I know the reason why. We just have to keep working and moving forward.”

Adding to Guardiola’s mounting problems, Swiss defender Manuel Akanji has been ruled out of the Manchester derby with a pelvic injury.

    ARSENAL

Mikel Arteta is adamant Arsenal’s search for a new sporting director to replace Edu will not affect their ability to sign players in the January transfer window.

Edu’s sudden resignation last month has left Arteta without one of his trusted inner circle at a key point in the season.

The Gunners are third in the Premier League and sit six points behind leaders Liverpool after an inconsistent first half of the campaign.

Arteta could look to the transfer market to bolster his squad in the new year, but Edu’s exit has raised questions about Arsenal’s ability to land the Spaniard’s top targets.

Jason Ayto, who has been at Arsenal for a decade as a scout and then Edu’s assistant, has assumed the post on an interim basis.

But Dan Ashworth’s shock exit from Manchester United has seen him linked with a move to north London ahead of the transfer window opening on January 1.

Ahead of Saturday’s home game with Everton, Arteta was asked if not having a permanent sporting director in place could pose an issue.

“We have one. Jason Ayto is our interim sporting director. He has got the full capacity and support of the football club right now,” Arteta told reporters on Friday.

“He is doing really well with his team. The process is open, as you know. And the club, with the support of all of us, will decide who is the best person to move us forward.

“I never expect January to be super busy, but we have to wait and see where we are. There might be some opportunities, too.

“Hopefully the availability of the squad will be better in a few weeks. We have to wait and see.”

While Arteta is calm about the situation, he would like it to be resolved before the end of the season.

“Yes, but when we are convinced that we have the right person who can work the right team who are doing a great job at the moment,” he said.

“Someone who is going to take us to the next level. We might have him internally. Timing wise it’s hard to understand. I’m not running the process so it’s more for the club to respond.”

Arteta could be forced into the transfer market, with defenders Riccardo Calafiori, Ben White, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Takehiro Tomiyasu all sidelined by injuries.

Jurrien Timber was only fit enough for the bench in Arsenal’s 3-0 win against Monaco in the Champions League in midweek.

Gabriel Magalhaes has also been absent for the past three matches, but he has returned to training and is expected to be available against Everton.

Myles Lewis-Skelly, 18, was handed a full Champions League debut against Monaco and is in line to secure his first Premier League start this weekend.

“He certainly deserves to be in contention to be selected because he performed and competed really well,” Arteta said.

“At his age to show that maturity and personality is strange.”

    CHELSEA

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said Friday he felt privileged to work with Cole Palmer after labelling him as “different” to the Premier League’s other star forwards.

Palmer has been Chelsea’s outstanding player in their unexpected rise to second place in the Premier League.

With 11 goals in 15 games, the England international is Chelsea’s top scorer and has also provided six assists.

Palmer’s confidence and quality were on display once again with the cheeky chipped penalty in last weekend’s win at Tottenham.

It was the kind of eye-catching moment that Maresca claimed as evidence that the 22-year-old is a truly unique talent.

“I feel very proud and privileged to work with Cole. Cole is a different one to the rest,” the Italian said.

Chelsea host west London neighbours Brentford on Sunday looking to keep up the pressure on Liverpool in the title race.

The Blues are four points behind Liverpool, who have a game in hand, and are also looking to qualify for the Champions League.

Palmer will be key to Chelsea’s hopes of keeping pace with Liverpool and returning to Europe’s elite club competition.

Maresca, who worked with Palmer during his time in charge of Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad, praised his forward’s ability to handle the pressure and expectations of being Chelsea’s main man, “Many top players have that way,” he said. “They look like they almost don’t care but it’s just their way and being in that way gives them more freedom.

“They can relax and you can see Cole is the same way. Cole was this way five years ago and he’s still the same.”

Asked whether he believed Palmer is the best player currently playing in England, Maresca said: “At this moment, he could be, but England are lucky because there are so many good players and Cole is one of them. There are so many good players in the Premier League.

“Absolutely he can be world class but as you said, he is only 22 and there are many things he can improve, including that at the moment, everyone is marking him man-to-man, but there are many things he can still improve.”

    NEWCASTLE

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe admits he is battling to lift the mood at his struggling club as they come to terms with reduced expectations.

The Magpies are languishing in 12th place in the Premier League ahead of Saturday’s clash with Leicester.

That is a far cry from the top four place they had targeted after competing in the Champions League last season.

When the Saudi takeover at St James’ Park was completed to much fanfare in 2021, Newcastle had hoped to establish themselves as one of the world’s top clubs.

But Premier League profit and sustainability rules have hampered the Saudis’ efforts to build on the fourth-place finish Newcastle achieved two season ago.

And with little sign of significant spending on new signings in January, Howe knows it could be harder to keep his players happy and attract fresh talent.

“Players are very astute human beings. I always say players feel everything at a football club,” he told reporters on Friday.

“They are the most perceptive people because they are on the front line. They are the ones delivering for us, so whatever is going on at a football match, they’re the ones absorbing it.

“Naturally, PSR has had an effect on the club and we haven’t been able to strive and reach as quickly as we wanted to initially. That has been halted somewhat in various ways.

“Of course they have felt that and been aware of that. The challenge for me is for that not to affect performances and mood and belonging to the club.”

Newcastle spent £400 million on new signings during the first four transfer windows under their new owners but have not made a major signing since.

Howe, who replaced Steve Bruce at Newcastle in 2021, finds himself under pressure after last weekend’s 4-2 defeat at Brentford, with his side having won just two of their last 11 league games.

“The best players we have, they’re like gold dust, and I’ve said that many times. They’re difficult to find, you’re not going to pick them up off the street,” Howe said.

“When you have them, you’ve got to cherish them and really care for them, and try to make the environment as strong as you can so they want to stay as part of that.”

    WEST HAM

West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui and his players will visit Michail Antonio in hospital as the Jamaica forward recovers after his “miracle” escape from a car crash.

West Ham star Antonio was rushed to hospital after being cut out of his Ferrari following the accident in Epping last weekend.

The 34-year-old needed surgery on a lower limb fracture and is reported to be facing weeks in hospital recovering from multiple injuries.

Antonio was able to speak to his team-mates via a video call from his hospital bed before they beat relegation rivals Wolves 2-1 on Monday.

West Ham players wore ‘Antonio 9’ shirts while warming up at the London Stadium, with Jarrod Bowen holding up his team-mate’s shirt after scoring the crucial winner.

“We are going to visit him today or tomorrow,” Lopetegui told reporters on Friday ahead of Monday’s Premier League trip to Bournemouth.

“But the main thing is we are very happy because he is recovering very well. We are very close to him and his family and we wish him the best for the next days.

“The best news about Michail Antonio was that he was able to talk with us before the Wolves match, because looking at the car crash, it was one miracle he was ok, so we are happy for him.

“Now for sure he is strong, he is recovering himself in the next months to be a man first and then a player.”

The Hammers said the 34-year-old was under “close supervision at a central London hospital”.

The update was issued after unverified images of a heavily damaged Ferrari began to circulate online.

A club statement said: “West Ham United can confirm that Michail Antonio is in a stable condition following a road traffic accident this afternoon in the Essex area.

“Michail is conscious and communicating and is currently under close supervision at a central London hospital.

“At this difficult time, we kindly ask everyone to respect the privacy of Michail and his family.

“The club will make no further comment this evening, but will issue a further update in due course.”

It was West Ham’s second statement on the matter after an earlier one confirming an accident had taken place.

Essex Fire Service also confirmed firefighters had attended the scene and released a man trapped in his car.

A number of Premier League clubs posted their support for Antonio.

“Everyone at Arsenal sends their love, support and well wishes to Michail, his family and West Ham United,” Arsenal said on X, with the same sentiments echoed by Chelsea and Liverpool.

The London-born Jamaica international joined West Ham in 2015 and has scored 83 goals for the club in 323 games.

He has scored once in 15 appearances for the Hammers this season, in a 4-1 victory at home to Ipswich in early October.

The former Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday striker won the Europa Conference League with the club in 2023 under then manager David Moyes.

West Ham, now under the leadership of Julen Lopetegui, host Wolves on Monday.

All I want for Christmas is: Declan Rice to stay healthy

We saw how fragile Arsenal looked towards the end of last season when defensive midfielder Thomas Partey got injured.

Since moving to Arsenal for the measly sum of $AUD200 million, Declan Rice has been indispensable in the Gunners’ midfield and has started all 16 of their league fixtures.

Should anything happen to Rice, how big will the drop-off be?

Partey himself has missed a large chunk of action this season due to a groin and hamstring injury but when he did play at the start of the season, he lined up in the unusual position of right back.

Essentially, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta needs both Rice and Partey fit if they are to go one better than they did last season.

    ASTON VILLA

All I want for Christmas is: To make away trips fun again

Aston Villa’s home form is superb.

In fact, it’s perfect with 15 consecutive league wins at Villa Park stretching back into last season.

But away from home, it’s a different story.

From the eight away games Villa have played this season, they have won three (Chelsea, Tottenham and Burnley).

A 2-0 loss at Nottingham Forest coupled with draws against Wolves and Bournemouth could prove costly at the end of the season in Villa’s quest for a spot in the Champions League.

Even just the slightest improvement on their travels this season could be enough for Villa.

    BOURNEMOUTH

All I want for Christmas is: Dominic Solanke’s purple patch to continue

Many felt Liverpool had completed a highway robbery when they sold Dominic Solanke to Bournemouth in January 2019 for $AUD34 million.

After all, Solanke had just one Premier League goal and assist to his name at Liverpool.

But the 26-year-old has finally proving his worth as Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth revolution continues to pick up momentum.

Solanke scored six Premier League goals in 33 games last season, but it’s taken just 16 matches to eclipse that figure as he has eight goals to his name already this campaign.

Additionally, Solanke has never gone longer than two games without a goal, which puts him on pace for 15 goals or more.

If the Chelsea academy product can maintain that rate for the rest of the season, Iraola and the Cherries will be safe from relegation well before the season’s end.

    BRENTFORD

All I want for Christmas is: Ivan Toney’s ban to hurry up and finish

Many feared what would become of Brentford this season with Ivan Toney suspended until January 17 next year for several breaches of the FA’s betting rules.

In Toney’s absence, winger Bryan Mbuemo has largely shouldered the goalscoring burden with seven, three fewer than Toney had at this stage last season – but suffered a bad ankle injury that will see him out ‘for weeks’.

But it’s not just goals that Toney brings to this team.

It’s his ability to hold the ball up and bring others into play, his defensive work and his cool-as-you-like penalties.

Rival clubs are already weighing up bids for Toney in January but if Brentford can hold onto him for the rest of the season at the very least, the Bees could make a push for the Europa Conference League.

    BRIGHTON

All I want for Christmas is: A new young gun to come out of nowhere and blitz the Premier League

Brighton have lapped up a first-ever venture into European football and are just one win away from sealing a spot in the knockout stages of the Europa League.

But the extra games on the continent coupled with the demands of the Premier League have taken a toll on the squad.

The Brighton physios have been forced to work overtime with the amount of injuries to key players in the squad.

But every time the Seagulls are forced to dip into their reserves, it always seems as if they can spawn some youngster from nowhere.

Last season it was teenage duo Julio Enciso and Evan Ferguson who shot to prominence, with the former scoring wondergoals from all ranges while Ferguson continues to dazzle up top.

So if Brighton are going to find some form and compete in the Premier League and Europa League, they’ll need a young gun to burst onto the scene.

    BURNLEY

All I want for Christmas is: No more schoolboy errors at the back

It’s been a baptism of fire for Burnley boss Vincent Kompany in his first season as a Premier League manager.

After decimating the Championship with the Clarets last season, Burnley have failed to replicate their dominance in the top flight and have won just two of their 16 games.

They’ve also conceded an alarming 34 goals, the worst figure in the league.

What’s most concerning is the relative ease with which opposition teams have scored against Burnley as an alarming stat proves they constantly shoot themselves in the foot.

Per the Premier League’s stats section, Kompany’s side have made four errors which directly lead to a goal, the second-most in the league.

It happened once again in the 1-0 defeat to Wolves when Burnley coughed the ball up close to their 18-yard box and quickly led to a Hwang Hee-Chan goal.

Strangely enough, the team with the most errors directly leading to a goal is league leaders Arsenal with five.

The frailties at the back will undoubtedly irk Kompany, one of the most dominant defenders to have played in the Premier League.

But he must find a way to get his players to remain focused for the entire 90 minutes because they will continue to get punished time and time again.

    CHELSEA

All I want for Christmas is: Nicolas Jackson to stop missing sitters

Every football fan knows the feeling of watching a player miss an opportunity when it seemed easier to score.

So our thoughts go out to Chelsea fans who have watched Nicolas Jackson spurn chance after chance since moving from Villarreal in the summer for $57 million.

Per the Premier League’s stats site Jackson is fourth in the charts for most big chances missed, behind only Erling Haaland, Darwin Nunez and Ollie Watkins.

Jackson has become a focal point for derision from rival fans given he has more yellow cards (seven) than he has goals (six).

Even then, three of those goals came against a nine-man Tottenham side in the wild 4-1 win.

If Jackson can finally put away his chances, Chelsea fans can start to dream about Europe again.

Well, maybe just the Europa Conference League.

    CRYSTAL PALACE

All I want for Christmas is: To break up with Roy Hodgson … for good

Roy Hodgson is the ex Crystal Palace just can’t quit.

A boyhood Palace fan, Hodgson was on the club’s books as a youth player but never quite made it into the first team.

But he would get a crack at managing the club he supported in 2017 and led the Eagles to their highest points tally in a single Premier League season in the 2018/19 campaign with 49 points.

However, the style of football Palace played wasn’t exactly endearing as Hodgson left on his own accord at the end of the 2020/21 season.

Patrick Vieira came but eventually left with Palace hurtling towards relegation.

Like a knight in shining armour, Hodgson returned to save the day with five wins and three draws in the 10 games he had in charge and keep Palace up while earning a one-year deal in the process.

Yet things are slowly starting to turn toxic once again at Selhurst Park as Palace struggle to find rhythm, although constant injuries to star duo Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise have not helped.

If Hodgson is to leave his job earlier than anticipated, the Palace top brass must find a replacement that represents a departure from the 76-year-old’s footballing ethos.

And if things turn sour once again, Hodgson cannot be called upon to save the day once more.

Let the man enjoy games from the Selhurst Park terraces rather than the dugout.

    EVERTON

All I want for Christmas is: Survival

After 12 games, Everton were sitting reasonably comfortable on the table and looked destined for a season of mediocrity which, after two years of near-misses with relegation, was not the worst.

But then everything changed when the Premier League deducted 10 points from the Toffees for one breach of its profit and sustainability rules.

The deduction also dropped Everton right back into the relegation fight, although there’s still plenty of time for Sean Dyche’s side to claw themselves away from danger – and a chance that the deduction will be reduced or completely overturned.

In fact, most bookies are confident Everton can preserve their record of being in every Premier League season since its inception as the three promoted clubs still remain favourites for the drop.

Although the Everton faithful will forever be flipping off those who made the decision to give them the 10-point penalty, survival this season would be the ultimate middle finger.

    FULHAM

All I want for Christmas is: A sword to fend off clubs interested in Joao Palhinha

Without star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, Fulham have simply not looked the same threat they did last season.

Now, imagine if they had lost both Mitrovic and defensive midfielder Joao Palhinha in the summer?

Bayern Munich were on the verge of signing the Portuguese star on deadline day but the move collapsed at the final hour and Palhinha ended up signing a new deal with Fulham in September.

Reports say the German giants will try their luck again in January while other Premier League clubs are rumoured to be interested in Palhinha.

Either way, Palhinha’s departure would leave a gaping void in Fulham’s midfield that will be extremely costly to replace, if even possible.

    LIVERPOOL

All I want for Christmas is: A new pair of shooting boots for Darwin Nunez

Manchester City signed Erling Haaland last year for €60 million and got 50 league goals in 50 games. Liverpool signed Nunez for €75 million (plus €25m in add-ons) and got 13 goals in 43.

Sure, he’s progressed plenty in his second season, with better pressing, more calmness in attack and a selfless approach that has earned him a handful of assists.

But he’s the number nine for a team supposedly in the title hunt – and he just can’t score consistently.

He’s got four goals in 15 appearances this campaign, but that’s come from 45 shots. He’s missed 15 ‘big chances’ and has hit the woodwork five times already, three ahead of the next player.

And his expected goals (xG) is 8.95 – meaning he’s scored around five goals fewer than he statistically should, by far the worst differential of any striker (Chelsea’s maligned Nicolas Jackson has a margin of 3.31, with six goals from 9.31 xG).

Nunez changed his hairstyle, but what he really needs is some new shooting boots.

    LUTON TOWN

All I want for Christmas is: Their ‘Maradona’ to save them from relegation

The first priority of any team in the Premier League is to stay there – but we thought it’d be too simple to just say that Luton want survival for Christmas. How can they make it happen?

They need a touch of class to go with their hard work.

So often in recent weeks they’ve played exceptionally and challenged top teams but failed to get real rewards for their efforts. They led both Arsenal and Manchester City before falling to defeats – not even draws. In fact, six of their eight defeats since September have come by a single goal, showing they are competing well but just not quite getting over the finish line.

But if someone is going to stand up and become a hero, it’s probably going to be Ross Barkley.

Teammate Andros Townsend recently told talkSPORT of Barkley’s form: “Honestly, they’ve been some of the best midfield performances I’ve seen in my career.

“It’s just unbelievable – the calmness, the ability to get the ball off the back four and knock it past some of the world’s best midfielders without a care in the world.

“We saw yesterday against Man City, Maradona was in the midfield to set up our goal – honestly, it’s been a joy to watch…He’s been absolutely incredible and he’s been an absolute joy to play with, but a joy to watch as well.”

Sometimes promoted teams feel like they need a miracle to avoid relegation. For Luton, they might just need Barkley to play like Maradona.

    MANCHESTER CITY

All I want for Christmas is: A proper left-back

They want Rodri to play every game, since they lose without him. They want Erling Haaland to get fit and get back to the ridiculous scoring ways of last season. But perhaps the most obvious weakness in the City side this season has been the lack of a genuine left-back. In the last 18 months they’ve lost Oleksandar Zinchenko, João Cancelo and Benjamin Mendy, as well as Aymeric Laporte – a left-sided centre-back who deputised at fullback. Nathan Ake and recent signing Josko Gvardiol have been deployed at the position this season, but both are better in the centre of defence. While Gvardiol is an extremely talented defender and a good signing, City probably would have been better off spending his £77 million transfer fee on a genuine left back.

Gvardiol is a centre back by trade but has often been forced to line up at left back for City. (Photo by Paul ELLIS / AFP)Source: AFP

    MANCHESTER UNITED

All I want for Christmas is: The old Marcus Rashford back

After Marcus Rashford hit a career-best 30 goals in all competitions last season, manager Erik ten Hag claimed that the local hero was capable of hitting 40.

He was handed a whopping new contract and became one of the club’s highest paid players – but he’s repaid the faith by scoring just two league goals so far this season.

Ten Hag made one of the boldest calls of his United career by dropping him – then winning – against Chelsea, after Rashford had a stroppy reaction to being substituted after a dismal showing at Newcastle.

United are last in their Champions League group, out of the Carabao Cup already, and in sixth in the Premier League – but with just 18 goals from 16 matches, which is just one more than 18th-placed Luton Town, for example.

What they wouldn’t give for Rashford to be the player he was last year – or the player they are paying over 300,000 pounds (A$575k) a week.

Until then, they’ll just have to hope that midfielder Scott McTominay continues his shock scoring streak. He bagged two against Chelsea and should have made it three, but his six goals make him United’s top scorer (all comps).

All that from a player Ten Hag was ready and willing to sell in the off-season.

    NEWCASTLE

All I want for Christmas is: Some fit players

The doctors and physios at Newcastle probably need a holiday. They might just be the busiest people in the Premier League given how many injuries the club has been hit with this season. In fact, you could probably field a strong XI of injured players most weeks!

It’s forced Eddie Howe to name fielded the same 10 outfield players for five-straight matches, and a 4-1 hammering from Spurs exposed their tired, worn-out team.

The Magpies been struggling at almost every position. Goalkeeper Nick Pope will be out for at least four months, which will likely push them into the transfer market for reinforcements with Aaron Ramsdale a possibility.

Blows to Sven Botman and Dan Burn have left them short at centre-back, while Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak have hardly played a game together up front. And injuries in the midfield have combined with a long-term betting ban for Sandro Tonali to leave them short in the centre of the park. A move for Man City’s Kalvin Phillips has been mooted. When they’ve got the manpower, Newcastle are well in the top-four hunt. But right now, they just need a fit player or two.

    NOTTINGHAM FOREST

All I want for Christmas is: To rebound from ‘rock bottom’

When Forest slumped to a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Fulham last week, manager Steve Cooper looked like he would be axed. So far, it hasn’t happened – and when given the chance to prove he deserves to stay in the job, his team rebounded with a 1-1 draw against Wolves. Cooper made seven changes to his line-up and reverted to a back five, and his players responded with a gritty, united effort.

Scorer Harry Toffolo said after the game: “We love the gaffer … I love working for him as do all the players and I think it showed today.”

It’s unclear whether the Wolves game was just a stay of execution for Cooper. But after four straight losses, they’ll be wishing that they’ve seen the worst of it, and that they can now turn the corner.

As Martin Keown said on BBC: “I think sometimes when you reach rock bottom, it looks like they have, then you start to climb out. Let’s hope their performances improve.”

    SHEFFIELD UNITED

All I want for Christmas is: A couple of dollars (or a new owner)

The Blades have been hamstrung this season by a lack of cash, plain and simple. Prince Abdullah bin Musa’ad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has been looking to sell the club for months but despite interest from American Henry Mauriss and Nigerian Dozy Mmobuosi, he hasn’t been able to get a deal done. Prince Abdullah has also sold his French club and is attempting to sell his stake in a Belgian club as well.

Last year, Sheffield United failed to pay some suppliers for months and also copped a transfer embargo, while in the off-season they sold two of their best players – Sander Berge and Iliman Ndiaye. As other promoted clubs spent big to reinforce their squads, Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom instead ended up with a side that was worse than the year before. Heckingbottom has since been sacked and relegation looks all-but certain. Chris Wilder might pull off a miracle – but the real change needs to happen at the ownership level.

    TOTTENHAM

All I want for Christmas is: A magical health potion.

We could wax lyrical about the magic that Ange Postecoglou has wrought at Spurs this season (and we have!).

But a raft of injuries proved devastating and led to a November slump. With no fit centre-backs, Spurs were forced to field a defensive line with four full-backs in two consecutive matches. In fact, they were without 11 first-team players for the match against Manchester City.

The biggest blows were serious injuries to new signings James Maddison and Micky van de Ven, both of whom were in contention for early signing-of-the-season honours after hot starts to the campaign. Manor Solomon and keeper Guglielmo Vicario are other big Postecoglou signings to have suffered injuries this year.

Spurs are desperate for Van de Ven and Maddison to come back (likely January), but will also dive into the January transfer window for reinforcements.

What they really need is their new signings – whoever they are – to stay fit.

If a magic health potion is too much to ask, maybe Postecoglou could just ask for a pack of club-branded band-aids from the official Spurs shop?

    WEST HAM UNITED

All I want for Christmas is: The next Michail Antonio

West Ham have infamously struggled for years to sign a decent striker, with their list of number nines over the years a revolving door of failures. Most recently it was Gianluca Scamacca, who left after just one season – and wasn’t replaced in the off-season.

There’s currently a real lack of proven centre-forward talent around, which is causing problems for plenty of Premier League sides. Chelsea are still desperate for a scorer, Spurs didn’t replace Harry Kane, and Man Utd spent big on the gifted but unproven Rasmus Hojlund.

33-year-old Antonio has just two goals in 12 appearances this season.

Jarrod Bowen, normally a winger, has been pushed into the striker position to fill the void left by Antonio’s slumping form.

26-year-old Bowen has bagged nine goals in 15 league games, but West Ham are still in the hunt for a striker so they can shift Bowen back to his natural position on the flank.

Moyes said last month: “There’s not really been a good market (of strikers) out there to buy and probably people have written that we need a new striker. Dead easy to say, dead hard to find to get someone who will work for you immediately …

“It’s hard to get exactly what you want, centre-forwards especially. That’s why I hope if we can’t find it, Jarrod (Bowen) might help fill the gap going forward.”

Manchester United won’t extend French striker Anthony Martial’s contract, which concludes at the end of this season. West Ham have subsequently been linked to a January transfer offer – but will he be the one to end the Hammers’ striker signings curse?

    WOLVES

All I want for Christmas is: A new contract for Hwang Hee-Chan…and more goals

Go back to the start of the season. Who predicted that a Wolves player would be top five in the scoring charts at this point of the campaign?

Hwang Hee-Chan has got eight goals already, putting him behind only Jarrod Bowen (nine), countryman Son Heung-min (10), Mohamed Salah (11) and Erling Haaland (14). That’s as many goals as he scored in his first two Premier League campaigns combined.

And in the last three Premier League seasons, no Wolves player has scored more than six goals in a campaign.

Credit to Wolves manager Gary O’Neill for giving the striker plenty more minutes, while his teammates deserve credit for improved supply of balls into the area for ‘The Bull’ to pounce on.

“His numbers are really impressive,” O’Neill said. “Will he continue to score at this rate for the rest of the season? It would be an incredible effort to do so.

“When the ball falls to Channy in the penalty area, I have a really good feeling that the ball is going to end in the back of the net. It is no fluke.”

His contract runs until 2026, but Wolves already are in talks over an extension and a pay upgrade for the 27-year-old.

After a loan move from RB Leipzig was made permanent in January 2022 for just £14m, Wolves have well and truly nabbed a Christmas bargain.

Antonio says West Ham will finish ABOVE Liverpool but Moyes must end horror run

Michail Antonio has added an extra spice to West Ham’s clash with Liverpool by claiming that the Irons will finish above the Reds this season.

But to do that, Hammers boss David Moyes will surely have to reverse his horror Anfield record.

    4

Ex-Everton chief Moyes has never won at Anfield, losing 12 and drawing six of his 18 visits to the red half of Merseyside.

There has only ever been one longer winless streak in the Premier League and that is held by the Scottish manager himself…

He has previously gone 19 away games without a win against Arsenal but West Ham’s fine start to the season will give him as much hope as ever before to finally end the curse.

West Ham, having sold captain Declan Rice this summer, sit sixth in the Premier League with a loss to champions Manchester City their only blemish so far.

However, a true test of their top-four credentials will come against Liverpool who are just three points above them in third.

“I am backing myself over Liverpool,’ Antonio said on the Footballer’s Football Podcast. “You know what, I think we are going to finish higher than Liverpool this season. I’m putting it out there.

“I watched the game [Liverpool 3-1 Wolves] because it was before our game and Wolves could have run away with it! They had quite a few opportunities.

    “We’ve got them this weekend and it’s a six-pointer. We’ve got them!”

Antonio might not have realised that to win West Ham’s six-pointer, his teammates will have to end Moyes’ two-decade wait for an away win at Liverpool.

The Scot’s first trip to Anfield was a highly respectable 0-0 draw with Merseyside rivals Everton in December 2002.

But Moyes never managed to get the derby bragging rights on Liverpool turf during his 11 years in charge of the Toffees.

In fact, a 2-2 stalemate in January 2011 remains the only time a Moyes team has scored more than once in a game at Anfield.

Moyes hoped for better luck when he joined then-champions Manchester United after 12 games without a victory.

Yet Daniel Sturridge’s goal handed him a first defeat in charge of the Red Devils in what was his third game in his only season at the club.

Moyes’ calamitous 10 months at Sunderland during their 2016/17 relegation season unsurprisingly failed to turn the Anfield tide.

And subsequent returns to Liverpool during his second spell at West Ham has also not paid dividends either as the wait for a win goes on.

“I don’t look at it [the record] – I just know it’s there,” he said last year.

“When you go to play Liverpool Football Club, they have incredible support. I’ve come up against some brilliant Liverpool teams … and quite often I’ve been one of the managers of one of the clubs with quite a big rivalry against them.”

Last season West Ham came as close as any Moyes side have to winning at Anfield, with Darwin Nunez’s header sealing a nervy 1-0 victory.

Shocking McTominay decision will have West Ham laughing at Man United - they've saved £30m

Alisson Becker was also forced to save Jarrod Bowen’s first-half penalty and Moyes must have been thinking there’s a curse.

If there is then it might be safer to let Antonio lead the team-talk this afternoon instead…

Ryan Mason slams Premier League pair for mocking Tottenham striker

Michail Antonio and Callum Wilson have been criticised by interim Tottenham boss Ryan Mason over their mocking of Richarlison.

The Spurs striker has failed to live up to his £60million price tag since arriving from Everton last summer.

He has scored just once in the Premier League, which came in the 4-3 defeat away at Liverpool last month.

His underwhelming campaign has led to him being labelled as the ‘flop of the season’ by talkSPORT hosts Gabby Agbonlahor and Dean Saunders.

And Newcastle forward Wilson and West Ham star Antonio revelled in his misfortune on The Footballer’s Football Podcast, where they laughed about his struggles.

Mason has now come to the Brazilian’s defence, where he stated he didn’t think it was respectful of his fellow professionals to make jibes over the player.

Mason has hit out at the pair over their jibes towards Richarlison

Speaking in his press conference on Friday, Mason said: “I certainly don’t feel like I’m ever in a position to criticise another head coach or another manager on the work they’re doing or the job they’re doing at their football club.

“Richy, I don’t think he’s thinking about other players. His own pride and his own determination will probably drive that most of all.

“Maybe he’s heard it, maybe’s seen it, maybe it will give him a little bit more. I’m not sure on that.

“As a coach I wouldn’t do it, and as a player I’d never have done it as well. I don’t really like that type of thing.

“We’re all trying to do our best, we’re all professionals, we’re working hard, we dedicate our lives to get to this level and to compete at this level.

“I don’t really like that type of thing, personally. From a player’s point of view, I’ve been signed for a club [Hull] as a record signing so I know the feeling that you really want to give back.

“One thing I will say about Richy is he’s always come in and he’s had energy to try. He’s a fighter, he works hard, he trains hard.

“I’ve never seen someone that shirks responsibility. Yes of course we would have wanted more goals and he would have wanted more goals from himself, but that’s not happened.

“Hopefully now he can influence the last two games and score goals to help us.”

He added: “I think I can probably speak quite openly in terms of the goal return that he’d probably be disappointed with that.

“But he’s never really had any rhythm whatsoever. He has had quite a few injuries this year and I’ve always felt like he’s been chasing his fitness.”

Richarlison will be looking to end the season on a high in Spurs‘ final two fixtures against Brentford and Leeds with a place in the Europa League still up for grabs.

Absolute madness as West Ham players leap into crowd fight, families attacked

West Ham’s Europa Conference League clash with AZ Alkmaar descended into chaos at the final whistle.

Supporters of the Dutch club reacted angrily to the London club’s 1-0 win, which meant David Moyes’ side progressed to the final 3-1 on aggregate, The Sun reports.

Masked AZ ultras stormed the hospitality area to attack players’ families, leading West Ham stars to intervene.

Lucas Paqueta, Aaron Cresswell, and Flynn Downes were all involved in the chaos and were held back by security and stewards.

While captain Declan Rice and Jarrod Bowen were also seen confronting members of the crowd, with the former appearing to throw an object in their direction.

Reacting to the trouble, BT Sport pundit Joe Cole said: “It’s absurd. Grown men attacking the West Ham fans. Players were trying to get involved to break it up.

“AZ Alkmaar fans throwing punches is ridiculous. There were families. Football is for everyone. It’s ridiculous in the modern game. Pathetic.”

His colleague Carlton Cole added: “There was no need for it.

“West Ham have come here, done their job and not disrespected them in any shape or form. The families of the players are over there. Sometimes emotions take hold of you.”

Meanwhile on the pitch Moyes, unaware of the chaotic scenes in the stands, began celebrating with the travelling support in the opposite corner of the ground.

The Scot pumped the air with his fists in delight after taking the East London club to the final – a year on from their Europa League semi-final defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt.

There were also clashes between West Ham and AZ fans ahead of kick-off, who again were masked as they caused mayhem on the streets of Alkmaar.

A local news outlet has described a “grim atmosphere” as footie fans in hoodies sparked fights earlier this evening.

In footage shared to social media, one person was captured being horrifically attacked by a group, with one member using what looked like a bicycle as a weapon.

On Twitter, more clips revealed large swarms of fans racing through the streets holding what appears to be chairs.

It is understood West Ham supporters were caught up in the mix when Alkmaar and FC Groningen fans brawled.

  • Arsenal receive huge West Ham boost as Moyes issues injury updates on Antonio, Scamacca

Arsenal receive huge West Ham boost as Moyes issues injury updates on Antonio, Scamacca

David Moyes has confirmed that strikers Michail Antonio and Gianluca Scamacca are doubts for West Ham’s trip to Arsenal on Boxing Day.

The Irons headed into the World Cup break on the back of two straight league defeats as well as having exited the Carabao Cup to Blackburn.

Despite presiding over what has been West Ham’s worst start to a top-flight season since 1976, Moyes remains confident the squad have what it takes to turn things around as they prepare to travel to Premier League leaders Arsenal on Boxing Day.

“There is a lot of things we did (over the break). We have looked to see where we can improve and what we should be doing better. Obviously there is lots of room for improvement,” Moyes said.

“So we have tried to work towards it. The players have shown a brilliant attitude since coming back, but it is not like we have always not played well.

“We need to be a little more clinical, certainly when we are trying to score and be that bit more ruthless defensively when we need to be as well.”

Moyes told a press conference: “It has been beneficial as I think the players needed a break – we had played more games than anyone else.

“We didn’t go away, so we were training at Rush Green through the snow. We have had some friendly games and they have gone quite well for us.

“We want to find the momentum we had in the last couple of seasons and get back to the levels we were at before.”

Despite finding his position under the spotlight, Moyes – who took West Ham to successive sixth and seventh-placed finishes as well as the semi-finals of the Europa League – remains determined to stay focused on matters he can control.

“I have had great conversations with David Sullivan and as you get older, you don’t feel the pressure so much,” the Scot said.

“We have had two or three years of great times and sometimes you have dips and at times like that you need the board and everyone to stick together.”

Forwards Gianluca Scamacca (ankle) and Michail Antonio (calf) face late fitness tests ahead of the trip to the Emirates Stadium, but defender Kurt Zouma is set for a spell on the sidelines after having surgery on a knee problem.

“I’m not sure if they’re going to be available yet,” said Moyes.

“Gianluca’s got an ankle injury, Micks [Antonio] has got a bit of a calf strain, so we’re hoping that they’ve both got a chance. I think they’re both doubtful.

“I think all of the clubs in the Premier League, you will never know who is fit and available from who has returned yet from the World Cup.”

The absence of West Ham’s two main strikers could see Jarrod Bowen play through the middle against Arsenal.

Declan Rice, Lucas Paqueta, Alphonse Areola, Thilo Kehrer and Nayef Aguerd were all away at the World Cup.

Defender Aguerd missed both Morocco’s quarter-final victory over Portugal as well as the subsequent final loss to France, and continues to be assessed.

“Nayef had a virus and an injury as well, which didn’t help him,” Moyes said. “He is not back in yet, but will back in tomorrow and we will see how he is.

“He is a really good footballer so hopefully he will improve us in the second half of the season.”
