Liverpool bid rejected for £62m Premier League midfielder as they ‘prepare second proposal’

Liverpool have had a bid for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo turned down ahead of the January transfer window, according to reports.

The Reds, who have already signed Cody Gakpo, are looking to bring in a new midfielder over the next couple of transfer windows with pundits and supporters identifying that area as the weak link in their squad.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been linked with Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham, Benfica’s Enzo Fernandes and Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat over the last few months.

Bellingham is believed to be a target for the summer transfer window but a report yesterday insisted that the England international has ‘told his entourage’ that he wants to join Real Madrid over Liverpool.

And now the Reds are reportedly busy elsewhere with Ecuadorian website Teradeportes claiming that Brighton ‘have communicated to the people of Liverpool that they do not accept the proposal made yesterday’.

Liverpool have been told that their bid was ‘below’ Brighton’s valuation of the player and that they have to ‘improve the principal value of the sale’.

The Premier League side are now ‘going to prepare a second proposal’ but they are still refusing to reach the €70m (£62m) valuation set by the Seagulls.

Caicedo, who has 28 caps for Ecuador, moved to Brighton in 2021 from Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle and spent a season on loan at Beerschot in Belgium before establishing himself in the Seagulls team.

This is the first season he has been a regular starter for Brighton with Caicedo making 17 appearances in all competitions and going to the World Cup with his country.

Liverpool reportedly failed with a late bid on transfer deadline day for Caicedo with Klopp bringing in Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo on a season-long loan deal instead.

And speaking in September, former Premier League right-back Alan Hutton thought Caicedo would be a good fit at Anfield.

Hutton said: “At this moment in time, yes. I think he’s a really good player. Obviously you see the style that Brighton play I think that would suit a player coming to Liverpool. They like to play with the ball and Liverpool, at this moment in time, need midfield reinforcements.

“It’s there for everybody to see. It’s no sleight on the players that are there, it’s just that they need help in the midfield.

“You can understand Brighton wanting to offer him a new contract. Still, that lure will be there to play for Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp. They’re still going to challenge, yes they’re going through a sticky period at this moment in time but you don’t become a bad team overnight.

“They’re full of quality players, international players. So it’s probably something that he thinks that he would fancy a bash at.”

  • Liverpool ‘send scouts’ to watch World Cup duo and transfer is ‘expected’ amid ‘growing’ interest

Liverpool ‘send scouts’ to watch World Cup duo and transfer is ‘expected’ amid ‘growing’ interest

Liverpool have reportedly recently ‘sent scouts’ to watch Cody Gakpo but interest in the Netherlands and PSV Eindhoven attacker is ‘growing’.

Gakpo has been one of the best players in the World Cup group stages as his form has helped the Netherlands breeze through to the knockout stages of the competition.

He already has three goals at the 2022 tournament and it is expected that his performances will earn him a big move in January.

Leeds United, Man Utd and Southampton were among the clubs interested in the forward in the summer.

He was valued at around £25m at that time but his valuation has now more than doubled with PSV wanting over £50m to sell their prized asset.

Even this feels like a reasonable price for a player who has been involved in 30 goals in just 23 games for PSV this season.

Gakpo told reporters earlier this week that he is not thinking about a potential move away from PSV.

“I’m 100% focused now on the World Cup,” Gakpo told reporters.

“It’s always nice to hear but I just focus here and do my best.”

Leeds and Southampton have little hope of signing Gakpo now but Man Utd and Liverpool appear to be in the running to secure his services.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool have recently scouted Gakpo and Ajax forward Mohammed Kudus.

‘Liverpool have recently sent their scouts to watch Cody Gakpo whilst playing for PSV. The same has happened with Mohammed Kudus whilst playing for Ajax,’ Romano wrote for Caught Offisde.

‘This is normal interest but there is no meeting scheduled between agents and Liverpool as of today.

‘With the performances displayed at the World Cup, interest is growing for Gakpo, and Manchester United still remain in the race to sign him.’

Romano added: ‘[Gakpo’s] agents are working on a potential transfer and it’s expected that he will leave in 2023.’

Both players look likely to leave their respective clubs in January, with Kudus making a big impact at the World Cup for Ghana. It is said that as many as 12 clubs are interested in him.

Liverpool are also in the market for a midfielder and Brighton’s Moises Caicedo is one player they are being linked with.

Caicedo has also performed well at the World Cup but his Ecuador side were unable to qualify for the round of 16.

Romano has suggested that Caicedo are keen to keep the midfielder at the club until June at the earliest.

‘Moises Caicedo is not expected to leave in January. The situation hasn’t changed. Liverpool and Manchester United among other clubs are interested in signing him,’ Romano claimed.

‘He’s been on Manchester United’s list for years, but then nothing happened.

‘I’m sure Brighton will try to keep hold of him until at least June.’
