NFL Rumors: NY Jets targetted Super Bowl-winning quarterback before landing Aaron Rodgers

The New York Jets traded for Aaron Rodgers after two things became apparent. First, that former number two overall selection Zach Wilson was not a viable starter, and second, that Rodgers was available. They immediately began focusing on him as their new quarterback.

However, that trade took a long time and to assume the Jets didn’t even look into other options would be foolish. GM Joe Douglas probably inquired about everyone that was possibly available. Apparently, that included Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.

    youtube-cover

According to CBS Sports‘ Cody Benjamin, the Jets had a very short list of trade targets and Stafford was on it:

“The Jets had their sights set on new quarterback Aaron Rodgers early in the 2023 NFL offseason. But the former Packers great wasn’t the only notable name to garner consideration from the team. Before free agency, Jets brass evaluated 19 different veteran options to replace Zach Wilson, according to SNY, and briefly narrowed a list of trade targets to include the Rams’ Matthew Stafford.”

The tier of quarterbacks they wanted to move for were ones they felt gave them a chance at the Super Bowl. That only included Rodgers, Stafford, and Lamar Jackson.

    youtube-cover

When Jackson appeared to be too difficult to land, the Jets office moved on and ended up trading for Aaron Rodgers. That was probably one of the best moves they could have made.

Why Aaron Rodgers made the most sense for the Jets

Matthew Stafford does not have a clean bill of health. He suffered a debilitating injury last season and reportedly mulled retirement. That’s not who a new team would want to pin their Super Bowl dreams on.

The Jets looked into Matthew Stafford
The Jets looked into Matthew Stafford

Lamar Jackson would have cost way too much and the Jets offense is so unlike what Jackson has run that the personnel might have had to change significantly. The playbook might have too.

Rodgers can slide in and play a similar offense that they ran last year, but far more effectively. He’s not the best quarterback of the trio anymore due to age and other factors, but he’s still effective and made the most sense.

  • NFL Trade Rumors: Dallas Cowboys rule out trade for RB ahead of 2023 NFL Draft

NFL Trade Rumors: Dallas Cowboys rule out trade for RB ahead of 2023 NFL Draft

Rumors abound as to where star running back Derrick Henry will head next, but the Dallas Cowboys are apparently not an option. Though recent reports suggested that the team was looking into it, a team source has all but axed that idea.

The Cowboys let Ezekiel Elliott walk and decided to franchise tag Tony Pollard. They are also heavily linked to star running back prospect Bijan Robinson. A trade for a big name running back when they still have Pollard in the backfield is unlikely.

The source for the team said of a trade:

    “There’s nothing there.”

The source spoke to Sports Illustrated to try and put those rumors to bed. It appears that the Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles have both been linked to Derrick Henry but that neither team is presently likely to trade for him.

Both teams have also been linked to Robinson, but the Eagles pick well before the Cowboys thanks to their trade with the New Orleans Saints.

If not the Dallas Cowboys, who will trade for Derrick Henry?

If the Dallas Cowboys are out on Derrick Henry, that leaves a lot of teams an opening to potentially add the star running back. He’s more than likely not going to stay with the Tennessee Titans.

Derrick Henry is not likely to be joining the Dallas Cowboys
Derrick Henry is not likely to be joining the Dallas Cowboys

The Miami Dolphins could stand to benefit from adding an elite running back. This would make their offense two-dimensional and nearly impossible to defend. Their duo of wide receivers and Henry would be the NFL’s most dynamic offense.

The Buffalo Bills have also been searching for a dependable running game. With Henry, they could survive without a legitimate second wide receiver and open things up for Josh Allen and company.

The Eagles would also benefit. Part of what made them so dynamic was that they had an elite running game with Jalen Hurts, Miles Sanders and Boston Scott. Sanders is gone now.

With Sanders in Carolina, there’s room for Henry to make this Eagles team one of the best rushing offenses in NFL history. Several other teams could well make a move for Henry, though. Just don’t consider the Dallas Cowboys among them.

  • NFL Rumors: Aaron Rodgers’ trade value took a hit after subpar 2022 season, claims ex-NFL agent

NFL Rumors: Aaron Rodgers’ trade value took a hit after subpar 2022 season, claims ex-NFL agent

With Aaron Rodgers’ future uncertain, the Green Bay Packers will have to consider all options. He could end up returning to the team and suiting up as normal next season. He could retire outright. He could also request a trade, and teams have already inquired about that.

Unfortunately, it’s not a good time for the Packers to trade their quarterback. Had they traded him last offseason when he was a back-to-back MVP, he would have commanded a massive return. Now, that’s not so much the case.

According to NFL agent Joel Corry, Rodgers’ season indicates that he’s not the same player anymore. This, in turn, tanks his trade value.

    youtube-cover

    He said via CBS Sports:

“Rodgers had a subpar 2022 season. His 12 interceptions were his most since 2008, when he first became a starter. Rodgers threw 13 interceptions combined over the 2019 through 2021 seasons. His 91.1 passer rating was the lowest in his career. Rodgers’ 217.4 passing yards per game were also a career low.”

There are a few reasons for this, such as a couple of injuries and a sheer lack of reliable pass-catchers on the roster. Still, the stats don’t lie and they don’t demand as big of a return as the Packers would like.

Will Aaron Rodgers pursue a trade?
Will Aaron Rodgers pursue a trade?

They’re reportedly seeking two first-round picks and more for the quarterback. Is 217 passing yards per game and a 91.1 passer rating worth all that? Probably not.

Additionally, if age and decline is a factor in the regression, then a 2023-2024 season for Rodgers could look even worse. Most teams know this and won’t send as much to Green Bay as a result.

This could all be moot if Rodgers retires or wants to run it back for $60 million with the Packers, though.

Which teams could trade for Aaron Rodgers?

There are probably two realistic trade options for Aaron Rodgers right now. The New York Jets and the Las Vegas Raiders make the most sense.

    youtube-cover

The Jets have been courting him and are looking into a veteran quarterback addition, of which there isn’t any better than Rodgers.

The Raiders cut Derek Carr and could reunite star wide receiver Davante Adams with Rodgers if they choose to pursue him.

  • NFL Rumors: Three teams in the mix for Derek Carr deal

NFL Rumors: Three teams in the mix for Derek Carr deal

Derek Carr is one of the premier free agent quarterbacks this offseason. For teams looking to add to that position, Carr is one of the stronger options, so he will likely have plenty of suitors once free agency officially begins.

It appears to currently be a three-horse race. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Carr has visits lined up with three teams, including two teams he has already visited with.

When QB Derek Carr arrives in Indianapolis today, he’ll have in-person free agent meetings with 3 teams: The #Jets, the #Saints, and the #Panthers. He’s already visited New Orleans and NYJ, now he adds Carolina and maybe more. Coaches, GMs, owners all in the same spot this week.

    Rapoport tweeted:

“When QB Derek Carr arrives in Indianapolis today, he’ll have in-person free agent meetings with 3 teams: The Jets, the Saints, and the Panthers. He’s already visited New Orleans and NYJ, now he adds Carolina and maybe more. Coaches, GMs, owners all in the same spot this week.”

Where is Derek Carr going next?
Where is Derek Carr going next?

Rapoport stated that Carr has already met with the New Orleans Saints and New York Jets. The Carolina Panthers are new to the mix, but all three teams need a quarterback.

Which team is most likely to sign Derek Carr?

All three of those teams need a quarterback. Derek Carr, despite not having an excellent year in Las Vegas in 2022, is a pretty serviceable option. However, one of these teams is far more likely to sign him.

    youtube-cover

The Jets have been looking into every option at quarterback. They’ve reportedly been interested in trading for Aaron Rodgers and have been looking at Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo.

Carr is probably their best option of the three. Garoppolo might struggle away from Kyle Shanahan and Rodgers would require an astronomical trade package and he has a massive contract.

The Saints could swing for Carr, but he probably doesn’t represent a big enough upgrade from a healthy Jameis Winston to worry invest in. Carr could be a one-year signing to try and compete while they have players like Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas signed to big deals. Whether Carr would be open to a one-year deal is another matter.

The Panthers are the least likely candidate here. They’ve been searching for a quarterback since the release of Cam Newton in 2019, which was perhaps an ill-advised move.

They’ve thrown everything at a few different veterans and it hasn’t worked, so they’re more inclined to draft one this time around. That’s especially true since they can get the top pick from the Chicago Bears.

    Atlanta Falcons’ greatest: Deion Sanders

Sanders played for the Falcons for five seasons, from 1989 to 1993, and his impact cannot be overstated. With the Falcons, Sanders was not only one of the league’s best cornerbacks, but also one of the most electrifying players in NFL history.

Sanders was a dominant force, earning two first-team All-Pro selections and Defensive Player of the Year award in 1994 (while with the San Francisco 49ers). He was also a dynamic return man, returning three punts for touchdowns and two kickoffs for touchdowns with the Falcons. He was a key part of the Falcons’ success in the early 1990s, helping them reach the playoffs in 1991 and 1992.

Off the field, Sanders was known for his flashy personality and his commitment to giving back to the community. He remains a beloved figure in Atlanta to this day.

After retiring in 2005, Sanders was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

Tom Brady shares honest take on 2023 Super Bowl controversial holding call

Tom Brady has given his verdict on the controversial holding call that came in the last minutes of Super Bowl LVII, and he’s not a huge fan of it. It’s hard to swallow a flag potentially robbing the Philadelphia Eagles of a chance to tie the game, but that could be what happened.

Brady discussed the penalty on the “Let’s Go!” podcast:

“It’s always, I think, easier not to call it. The hard one is when you do call it because there’s a lot of scrutiny with that call.”

    He continued:

“And I think the point is, at least from a receiver DB standpoint, you know, if you’re not going to come from, you know, let’s say within the letter of the law, and you’re going to tug it on, you can impede the receiver from where he wants to go and create an almost impossible throwing catch by the quarterback.”

    youtube-cover

    He finished, saying:

“And at the same time on the other side of the ball. If the receiver pushes off, there’s really nothing that DB can do in order to make the play. So it’s such a hard situation because you don’t know how the game is being called all day long.”

Eagles cornerback James Bradberry admitted that he held Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster’s jersey. However, he had hoped the officials wouldn’t call it.

    youtube-cover

Brady seems to be in the same line of thinking that the refs might have considered swallowing the whistle. Nevertheless, it was a penalty.

What penalty is Tom Brady referring to?

Tom Brady was referring to the controversial holding call in the final two minutes of the Super Bowl. Due to the call, the Chiefs received a fresh set of downs and whittled the clock away.

It was a third down near the red zone and the Eagles had one timeout remaining. Patrick Mahomes tossed a pass towards the end zone for Smith-Schuster, who was running a wheel route.

Bradberry had held him at the beginning of his route, which may have prevented him from getting to the ball. The penalty was called, which made it first down. The Chiefs ran the clock out and kicked the field goal to win the Super Bowl.

  • Does Super Bowl MVP voting need to be fixed? Jalen Hurts’ record-setting showing reignites debate

Does Super Bowl MVP voting need to be fixed? Jalen Hurts’ record-setting showing reignites debate

Jalen Hurts was by far the best player on the field during Sunday’s incredible Super Bowl. He was the first quarterback to have two rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown in the game, and he did that in the first half alone.

He finished with three rushing touchdowns, one passing touchdown and over 300 yards on a strong completion percentage. He made plays up and down the field and made some of the best throws all season in crucial moments.

He was denied the Super Bowl MVP award because he didn’t win the game. It has only happened once that the winning team also didn’t have the MVP, and it arguably should have happened last night.

    youtube-cover

Mahomes was excellent in guiding the Kansas City Chiefs back from a deficit and winning them the game on one leg. Hurts was probably better, even with a fumble that was returned for a score.

The Chiefs were fortunate the Philadelphia Eagles didn’t have but six seconds to try and win the game in the end because their defense had no answers for Hurts and company all night.

Everyone watching the game knew that Hurts was the best player on the field. Why didn’t he win the award? He didn’t commit a holding call that cost his team over a minute of clock time.

    youtube-cover

He didn’t allow two wide-open scores in the red zone while the Chiefs mounted an incredible comeback. All he did was move the offense down the field and play incredibly well. It’s a shame the Eagles star didn’t win the MVP.

Super Bowl MVP voting needs to change for players like Jalen Hurts

The entire voting process needs work. Jalen Hurts should have won, but the process needs to be changed regardless.

Jalen Hurts should have won MVP
Jalen Hurts should have won MVP

According to ProFootballTalk, the NFL asks the 16-voter panel for ballots at the two-minute warning, but will accept them later:

“We are in touch with the panel during the fourth quarter, and often with the game in the balance, media will wait until the winner of the game is clear before giving us the final vote. There is not a hard deadline. If voters want to wait until immediately after the game concludes, that is fine.”

The voting needs to begin after the game ends. That’s when it’s decided and the most important plays come into focus. Additionally, 16 voters is far too few. It’s easy for a few voters to vote wrong and throw the entire thing off.

“Justice for Jason Kelce” – Eagles’ All-Pro center has NFL fans in his corner after Super Bowl snacks jibe

Jason Kelce and the Philadelphia Eagles are currently embroiled in a hotly contested match during the Super Bowl with his brother Travis and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Travis scored the game-tying touchdown and the cameras happened to catch Jason on the sidelines, eating a snack.

“One brother scores, the other brother eats a snack”SB Commentators got jokes 😅 https://t.co/McDPTTi9tV

The commentators couldn’t resist the joke that was ready and waiting for them, saying:

“One brother scores, the other brother eats a snack.”

NFL fans have been left in shambles after the joke, with many coming to defend Jason, who’s become a fan favorite like his brother this year.

@BleacherReport Best duo in the history of North American sports…. and it’s not close

The Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event in America, so there’s good reason to believe that the players involved have a stress level that was previously unknown.

People might deal with that stress in different ways, and it appears Jason Kelce might be having a snack to alleviate some stress.

    youtube-cover

The stress level was likely increased when his brother scored and effectively wiped out the Eagles’ opening scoring drive.

There have never been a pair of brothers in the NFL, so Jason and Travis are under a very unique pressure that no NFL players have experienced before.

    youtube-cover

Nevertheless, Jason will likely continue eating throughout the game and Travis may continue scoring touchdowns if the Eagles defense can’t figure out how to contain him.

What is the score between Jason Kelce’s Eagles and Travis Kelce’s Chiefs?

The Philadelphia Eagles, bouyed by Jason Kelce at center, drove down the field on the opening drive and scored with relative ease. The Chiefs then marched down and tied the game on Travis’ reception.

Travis and Jason Kelce met at midfield
Travis and Jason Kelce met at midfield

The Eagles couldn’t move the ball and punted and the Chiefs drove down. They missed the field goal after Harrison Butker kicked the ball off the upright.

The Eagles took the ball and moved to midfield before launching a deep touchdown to AJ Brown. That gave the Eaglesa 14-7 Super Bowl lead, where the score currently is.

So far, the offenses have had little trouble moving down the field and figure to engage in a very high scoring battle that won’t finish with much of a margin.

Is President Joe Biden an Eagles fan? POTUS all-in on Jalen Hurts and co.

The Super Bowl is the biggest game of the year for Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles as well as Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Arguably the most important person in the country has given his support to one of these teams.

Each team has legions of fans, but the President of the United States has stated his backing of Hurts and the Eagles.

    He tweeted:

“As your president, I’m not picking favorites. But as Jill Biden’s husband, fly Eagles, fly.”

Biden is not necessarily a fan of the Eagles, but his wife is. Jill Biden posted a video showcasing her support for the Eagles and the President tweeted his agreement from the official POTUS account.

    youtube-cover

The president certainly can be a fan of a team, but Biden isn’t necessarily an Eagles fan. He’s just a good husband who wants to see his wife’s team win. So far, his hope looks good as the Eagles currently lead

What has happened for Jalen Hurts and the Eagles thus far?

The Eagles, and Jalen Hurts especially, have experienced the highs and lows of the game thus far. Their opening drive was perfect as Hurts was methodical moving down the field.

The Chiefs matched and then missed a field goal, giving Hurts and company the ball back. They scored on a 45-yard touchdown pass to AJ Brown. That gave them the lead.

When the Eagles forced a punt, things were looking good. Unfortunately, the quarterback fumbled on a scramble and the Chiefs returned it for a touchdown with ease.

Jalen Hurts fumbles in the Super Bowl
Jalen Hurts fumbles in the Super Bowl

That tied the game, but Hurts and company didn’t stay down for long. After a massive fourth down run by Jalen Hurts, the quarterback kept it himself to score from three yards out to give the Chiefs the lead once again.

This is already a very high scoring game and the Eagles offense doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down any time soon.

    youtube-cover

This very well could end up being one of the highest scoring Super Bowls of all time if Hurts and Mahomes continue to put on a show like they have thus far.
