Four teams target Golden State star; mystery as PG’s $49m deadline nears: NBA Rumour Mill

The 2024 NBA Draft has come and gone, with a number of big trades already taking place including the latest, which saw Dejounte Murray dealt to the Pelicans.

It is just the start of what should be an intriguing summer in the NBA, with the free agency window opening on Monday (Australia time) and some big names yet to make a call on their future.

Here are three of the biggest stories to follow ahead of Monday.

    CLIPPERS, PAUL GEORGE STALEMATE CONTINUES

The Paul George puzzle has yet to be solved.

The Clippers, according to ESPN, “very much” want to keep the nine-time All-Star, but uncertainty looms over the organisation.

Sunday’s deadline is steadily approaching for George to decide on his $48.8 million player option.

He is seeking a four-year contract extension at his $221 million max, per ESPN, but the Clippers haven’t budged on an agreement for months.

Despite the ambiguity, the Clippers are clinging to the hope that George, 34, will want to remain near his hometown, Palmdale, where his family resides.

After the Clippers drafted Cam Christie with the 46th pick in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft, Lawrence Frank — the Clippers president of basketball operations — took the opportunity to give George a shoutout.

“He’s been awesome. He’s been an All-Star. He’s one of the best two-way players in the league,” Frank told reporters.

“He’s a terrific person. He’s got great family, so we hope he’s here but also respect the fact that if he chooses to opt out, that’s his choice. He’s earned it and we’ll see how things play out.”

If there’s no extension prior to the deadline, George has the option to become a free agent or opt into his deal.

Even if he does decide to opt into the final year of his deal, he could attempt to negotiate a trade from the Clippers to another team.

In January, the Clippers retained one of their go-to guys, Kawhi Leonard, with a three-year $150-million extension.

Now they are weighing how to keep George around and James Harden — also a free agent — to complete their “Big 3.”

The organisation has engaged in talks with Harden alongside his agents, Mike Silverman and Troy Payne.

“We think James has been terrific for us,” Frank said.

“We hope he’s had a great experience while he has been here and we hope he decides to continue to be here. … We very much want James to remain a Clipper and hope he decides to do the same.”

    FOUR TEAMS EYE WARRIORS SHARPSHOOTER

A group of NBA teams are lining up for Klay Thompson as his free agency decision comes to a head.

League sources told The Athletic that the 76ers and Nuggets would have interest if the five-time All-Star enters the open market.

The 76ers, armed with roughly $65 million in cap space, have more than enough cash to give Thompson, 34, the money he’s seeking from Golden State.

The Nuggets have “pegged Thompson as a possible replacement” for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who declined a player option to enter free agency this week, per the outlet.

NBA insider Marc Stein reported Saturday that the Mavericks are “exploring the feasibility” of adding Thompson after clearing cap space by dealing Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Pistons.

Klay Thompson could be on the move. Ezra Shaw/Getty Images/AFPSource: AFP

The Magic have also recently been reported as a possible destination for Thompson.

The latest Thompson rumours come as his relationship with the team appears to be souring.

Stein also wrote Saturday that signs “have frankly never pointed more strongly to” Thompson, who has spent all 13 of his NBA seasons with Golden State, winning four championships alongside Steph Curry and Draymond Green, leaving the Bay Area.

Earlier this month, Thompson unfollowed the Warriors on Instagram, deleted mention of the team from his bio on the platform and purged the majority of his Golden State-related posts dating back more than two years, signalling something may be amiss in the relationship.

On June 17, The Athletic reported that it was all but certain Thompson would test the open market for the first time in his 11 seasons.

“Klay Thompson, I’m told, is open to all external options in free agency coming up,” the outlet’s NBA insider Shams Charania said on FanDuel TV. “He intends to test free agency. We know the Warriors want him back, they offered him an extension before the start of the season. They’re going to see if there can be a deal that gets done. He’s going to be there in the marketplace, seeking offers elsewhere.”

Gaze: Bulls a ‘better fit’ for Giddey | 00:59

GOLDEN STATE PUSH BACK CHRIS PAUL DEADLINE

The Warriors have two extra days to figure out what to do with Chris Paul.

Golden State and the 39-year-old guard agreed to push back the deadline for when his $30 million salary for next season — the final year of a four-year, $120 million deal inked with the Suns in August 2021 — becomes guaranteed from Saturday to Monday, according to multiple reports.

The purpose of that change, according to ESPN, revolved around helping find a potential trade partner that fits Paul, though the outlet added that there’s still a possibility the Warriors will waive him to save salary cap space.

Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. had hinted at the possibility of extending the deadline during a press conference Friday, though he didn’t consider the team’s decision on Paul — the guard who spent last season with Golden State after getting traded from the Suns to the Wizards and then the Wizards to the Warriors across four days — to reflect the “pivot point” of their offseason.

“We still have some time on that, which will take,” Dunleavy told reporters Friday, “and we’ll come to a conclusion. But in terms of pivot point, no, it doesn’t. We’ll figure it out and go from there, but I don’t think it’s gonna make a huge difference in terms of like how things shake out overall.”

The Warriors have to make a call on Chris Paul. (Photo by EZRA SHAW / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA / Getty Images via AFP)Source: AFP

In his first year with the Warriors, Paul averaged 9.2 points and 6.8 assists per game, starting the fewest games — just 18 — of his career and settling into a complementary role alongside a struggling group that still possessed a star-filled lineup.

The Warriors, who finished No. 10 in the Western Conference, were eliminated by the Kings during their opening game of the play-in tournament, and that started an offseason filled with speculation about the futures of Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Paul.

Wiggins, according to The Ringer, will likely be “aggressively dangled,” in addition to the reality that Paul could get traded.

Those are the decisions that will shape the Warriors’ offseason, and last year, right around this time, they were the final stop for Paul after a whirlwind one-week stretch.

He was dealt by the Suns — where he had played since 2020-21 — to the Wizards in a three-team trade on June 23, and days later, Washington sent him to the Warriors in the deal that brought Jordan Poole to the Warriors.

But depending on what Dunleavy decides by Monday, it might be a one-season stint in Golden State.

‘Mutual interest’ in shock deal to create instant NBA contender; Big 3 could break up: Rumour Mill

The NBA rumour mill has hit overdrive as teams crash out of the playoffs, with the futures of a host of superstars up in the air.

Paul George, Klay Thompson, Jimmy Butler – and almost the entire Philadelphia 76ers roster – have been sparking intense trade talk as free agency looms.

Here’s the latest around the league.

The LA Clippers could be set to lose two big names, with James Harden becoming an unrestricted free agent – and he could be joined by Paul George.

The Clippers, who lost 4-2 to the Mavericks, are hoping to keep the 34-year-old pair on their books alongside 32-year-old Kawhi Leonard, who signed a three-year extension in January.

George has a player option to pick up the $48.8 million he is due next season, but hasn’t inked a deal yet – and would become a free agent if he can’t come to terms before the June 30 deadline.

George’s maximum available is a four-year, $221 million extension, which he could still receive from the Clippers even after free agency begins. Other teams can offer $9m less.

HEATED Pat Bev pegs ball at Pacers fan | 00:40

Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank was bullish about the prospect of holding onto Harden and George for next season.

“We’d like to be able to bring back and retain Paul and James,” Frank said Monday. “We’re hopeful we can, but also understand and respect the fact that they’re free agents. Paul has a decision with his option. James will be an unrestricted free agent, so our intent is to bring him back, but also realise that they’re elite players and they’ll have choices.”

“We want Paul, we value Paul,” Frank added. “Paul’s done some tremendous things here. He’s an elite player, and our biggest thing is we always want to be able to treat players well and pay them fairly, and we also have to build out a team, especially, this is a new CBA.

“But in terms of the exact money, I would never go into details other than we’ve had really, really good conversations over the course of the year and hopeful that we can get him to remain a Clipper.”

Paul George and James Harden could be leaving the LA Clippers.Source: Getty Images

But the amount they are willing to pay George to keep him – with rivals including the Philadelphia 76ers reportedly interested – appears the biggest problem.

The Clippers landed Leonard for less than the maximum deal he could have commanded, but if George and Harden both sign for max deals then the Clippers will be significantly limited in terms of how they can strengthen the team elsewhere.

“So he’s been under contract negotiations with the Clippers for months. No deal, and I think he is likely headed for free agency,” ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said on Get Up. “The question really is this: Will they give him a max contract? I don’t think that they want to. They didn’t give Kawhi a max contract.

“And there’s a couple of teams out there, namely the 76ers, who have max cap space that would be interested. I suspect, at the end of the day, if the Clippers actually believe they would lose Paul George, if they don’t give him max, I think they pay up.”

NBA Wrap: Knicks KNOCK OUT 76ers! | 01:30

The 76ers are preparing for a major overhaul after their first-round exit to the Knicks, given they haven’t made it past the second round of the playoffs despite the remarkable talents of Joel Embiid.

A major roster rebuild is on the cards as they look for the right pieces around Embiid to make a title run.

Philadelphia’s president of basketball operations Daryl Morey said: “There’s going to be a lot of change.

“Except for [head coach] Nick Nurse, Joel and Tyrese [Maxey] and Paul [Reed] and Ricky [Council IV], we don’t know for sure who’s gonna be back next year.”

“This off-season’s a big one,” Morey added. “I owe it to the fans, to ownership, to everybody, to get this team in a place where we’re competing for championships.”

The Sixers can raise a mammoth near-$65m in cap space, and Windhorst claims George is “the player at the top of their list,” with the 76ers willing to offer the full $49.4 million max salary next year.

That could force the Clippers to pay up if they hope to retain George.

    THOMPSON LINKED TO MAGIC

Klay Thompson’s four-title era with the Golden State could be over – and the opportunity to join a rising title contender in Orlando might be too good to resist.

The Orlando Magic are set to be a major player this off-season given their ability to create around $60m USD in cap space – one of very few franchises that can do so.

The Magic’s young core of Paulo Banchero and Franz Wagner is crying out for veteran reinforcements to take them to the next level, and Thompson’s elite shooting from deep could be a massive boost for the team that made the fewest three-pointers per game in the NBA this season (11.0).

The Athletic’s Shams Charania said on FanDuel TV’s Run It Back that there is “mutual interest” between Orlando and Thompson.

“The Magic can open up in excess of $60 million in cap space this off-season, so they’re gonna be players when you think about free agency and other moves that can be made,” he said.

“You look at scoring in Game 7, obviously struggled a little bit to score the ball, especially in the second half of the game when the Cavs and Donovan Mitchell kept coming for them.

“So you look at the point guard position, but also shooting and scoring on the wing and one name to keep an eye on Klay Thompson. I’m told there is mutual interest between the Magic and Klay Thompson.

“Thompson, along with several other vets around the league are looking at the Magic of the situation where if you plug in a guy like Klay Thompson, you plug in another veteran player whether it be at the point guard position, shooting guard position, this team can make a real jump around Paulo Banchero and Franz Wagner.

“Both guys, Paulo Banchero already a star, already a guy that’s been a part of team USA. Franz Wagner has the ability to potentially be an All-Star as well. But you plug in some more shooting and scoring. I think that’s what can take this Orlando team to another level.”

Thompson is 34, yet shot at 38.7% from deep this season – and the Magic may well present his best chance of adding another ring to his collection.

NO TALKS FOR BUTLER … AND NO TRADE

The future of Jimmy Butler has also been widely discussed, though the Miami Heat have shut down suggestions the six-time All-Star could be traded.

The 34-year-old still has two years left on a three-year, $146.4 million contract, per Spotrac. Butler can also pick up a player option for 2025-26 worth a little over $52.4 million.

According to the Miami Herald’s Anthony Chiang, Butler is seeking a two-year extension worth $113 million – the maximum possible under his current deal.

Miami Heat president Pat Riley told the Associated Press that “we haven’t in earnest discussed” an extension yet, saying the team has another year before deciding on a fresh offer for their star man.

But Wes Goldberg of the Ringer says Riley isn’t entertaining trade talk over Butler, replying with a straightforward “no” when asked about possible trades.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst claimed that the Philadelphia 76ers could be a potential landing spot for Butler if the Heat change their mind.

Giannis Antetokounmpo injury woe for Bucks; Warriors down Lakers — NBA Wrap

Giannis Antetokounmpo suffered a calf injury as the Milwaukee Bucks defeated the Boston Celtics on Tuesday while the Golden State Warriors outgunned the Los Angeles Lakers in their crucial heavyweight showdown.

Former NBA MVP Antetokounmpo crumpled to the court in a non-contact incident in the third quarter of the Bucks’ 104-91 defeat of Boston after in-bounding to teammate Damian Lillard.

Antetokounmpo, who missed games last month with an Achilles injury, hobbled off the court in clear discomfort and did not return to the game at Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum.

The Bucks said Antetokounmpo had suffered a left soleus strain and would get an MRI scan to assess the injury.

“They’re checking him now,” a downcast Milwaukee coach Doc Rivers said when quizzed on Antetokounmpo’s injury after the win.

Asked what level of concern there was about Antetokounmpo’s injury, Rivers replied: “Good question. High, I would say that. He’s Giannis.

“I think everyone probably feels the same way as I do right now. So we’re just going to hope for the best.”

Any significant injury to Antetokounmpo would be a brutal blow to the Bucks’ hopes of making a deep run in the playoffs.

The Greek star had scored 15 points with eight rebounds and seven assists before leaving Tuesday’s game.

The injury overshadowed what was an encouraging victory for the Bucks over the runaway Eastern Conference leaders, who are already assured of top seeding throughout the postseason.

The Celtics led briefly in the first quarter but thereafter trailed to a Milwaukee team that led by 24 points in the second quarter.

The Bucks retained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game, with Patrick Beverley leading the Milwaukee scoring with 20 points.

Boston coach Joe Mazzulla drew positives from his team’s defeat as they prepare for the challenges of the playoffs.

“It’s good for us to be in a bunch of different situations,” Mazzulla said.

“That was the first time that the game hasn’t gone our way since I can’t remember when … it’s a good situation for us because we haven’t seen it for a while.”

    WARRIORS’ THREE SPREE

The Golden State Warriors unleashed a barrage of three-pointers to overwhelm the shorthanded Lakers 134-120 on the road.

The Warriors poured in 26 three-pointers from 41 attempts outside the arc, with Stephen Curry posting a perfect 6-of-6 from long range in a 23-point haul.

Klay Thompson added five three-pointers while even Draymond Green cut loose with five threes against a Lakers team missing the injured Anthony Davis.

LeBron James led the Lakers scoring with 33 points while Austin Reaves added 22 and Rui Hachimura 20.

In other Western Conference action, the Phoenix Suns were bumped out of the automatic playoff spots into seventh place after suffering a 105-92 defeat at home to the Los Angeles Clippers.

The New Orleans Pelicans leapfrogged over the Suns into sixth place in the West after their 110-100 defeat of the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Philadelphia 76ers’ resurgence since Joel Embiid’s return from injury continued as they bagged a sixth straight win in a 120-102 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Embiid finished with 37 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists to leave the Sixers on 45-35, just behind the sixth-placed Indiana Pacers (46-34).

Both teams have two regular-season fixtures remaining.

Sixers coach Nick Nurse said Embiid was still working his way back to full fitness.

“I think he’s still got some work to do on it,” Nurse said. “But we’re getting there. We’re just slowly inching him up the ladder, just a little bit more each game.” In Charlotte, Luka Doncic scored a 39-point triple-double as the Dallas Mavericks’ hot streak continued with a 130-104 road win over the Hornets.

The Mavericks improved to 49-30 to remain in fifth place in the Western Conference.

Daniel Gafford had 26 points for the Mavs while Kyrie Irving added 18 as Dallas cruised to victory.

Anthony Edwards stuns with ‘dunk of the year’ contender; Lakers bounce back in big way: NBA Wrap

Anthony Edwards produced a monstrous dunk-of-the season contender as the Minnesota Timberwolves rallied to beat the Utah Jazz 114-104 on the road.

Edwards, who finished with 32 points, took flight in the third quarter, soaring over the 6ft 9in (2.06m) John Collins for a spectacular career highlight reel moment.

“Oh my God. That’s the best dunk of my career, I’m not gonna lie,” Edwards said after the win, which left Minnesota in second place in the Western Conference on 47-21, one game adrift of leaders Oklahoma City (47-20).

“… I couldn’t even react ‘cause I dislocated my finger.”

Edwards dislocated a finger on his left hand while performing the dunk while Collins, who was on the receiving end, suffered a head contusion.

UNSUNG HERO FOR KNICKS IN WARRIORS WIN

Elsewhere, Jalen Brunson scored 34 points as the New York Knicks completed a wire-to-wire 119-112 road victory over the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco.

The Warriors, fresh from a high-scoring win over the Los Angeles Lakers, were always on the back foot after New York sprinted into an early 20-6 first quarter lead at the Chase Center.

Point guard Brunson pulled the strings superbly to guide an injury-hit Knicks line-up to an impressive win that keeps them firmly on course for the playoffs.

Brunson received scoring support from Miles McBride, who was an unsung hero as he finished with a career-high 29 points in just his sixth NBA start.

“We keep finding ways to win,” Brunson said afterwards.

“Staying poised, staying confident — just sticking together.” But the loss was another body blow for the erratic Warriors, who are 17-18 at home this season.

Golden State occupy 10th place in the Western Conference — the last of the four play-in berths. Stephen Curry led Golden State’s scorers with 27 points.

LAKERS BOUNCE BACK FROM LOSS IN EMPHATIC FASHION

In Los Angeles, the Lakers bounced back from the defeat to the Warriors with an emphatic 136-105 win over the Atlanta Hawks.

D’Angelo Russell drained six-of-10 from three-point distance to finish with 27 points, while LeBron James finished with 25 points and Anthony Davis 22.

The Lakers are ninth in the West on 37-32.

In other games on Monday, the Cleveland Cavaliers fought back from a 15-point deficit to grind out a 108-103 victory over the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis.

Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert led the Cavaliers with 23 points apiece while the Cleveland defence restricted Tyrese Haliburton to just 14 points.

Cleveland improved to 43-25 with the win to remain in third place in the Eastern Conference behind the first-placed Boston Celtics and second-placed Milwaukee Bucks.

    CELTICS CRUISE TO VICTORY

The Celtics, runaway leaders of the Eastern Conference with a 54-14 record, strolled to another routine victory with a 119-94 defeat of the Detroit Pistons at Boston’s TD Garden.

Jaylen Brown led the Boston scoring with 31 points in just three quarters, while Derrick White bagged the first triple double of his career to finish with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

“I’m not usually one to try and chase stats and what not,” White said after the win.

“I’ve been close a lot of times so I was like, ‘I’m going to try and get it this time’. So shout-out to my team-mates for real.”

SIXERS MADE TO WORK IN WIN OVER HEAT

In Philadelphia, Tyrese Maxey finished with 30 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds as the 76ers defeated the Miami Heat 98-91.

The Sixers, without the injured Joel Embiid, took control of a tight game in the third quarter, outscoring Miami 28-16 to surge 17 points clear.

Although the Heat fought back to tie it in the fourth quarter, the Sixers held on to close out a win that left them level with Miami on 37-30.

Sixers coach Nick Nurse said Philadelphia’s former Heat stalwart Kyle Lowry had warned his team-mates to expect a Miami fightback.

“Kyle kept reminding everybody on the bench that they weren’t gonna quit even when we had a 17-point lead or whatever it was,” Nurse said.

“They had a great run and we responded pretty good there at the end.”

The worrying moment happened in the first half, with Biyombo unexpectedly falling to the ground while teammates were coming to the bench for a time-out.

Teammates and officials crowded around Biyombo before he was eventually able to leave the court without assistance.

Thankfully, Biyombo was cleared of any serious medical issues by Portland physicians, according to Thunder sideline reporter Nick Gallo.

However OKC is reportedly taking a conservative approach with the big man and will hold him out for the rest of the game before it’ll evaluate him further tomorrow.

Biyombo signed with the Thunder last month for additional front-court depth to Mark Daigneault’s team.

‘The entire league needs to be watching’: Celtics sound ominous title warning after historic first half

    Look out, Denver Nuggets.

If it wasn’t obvious enough already, the Boston Celtics are the biggest threats to the reigning champions going back-to-back this season.

And while the Nuggets, who have won six games since the All-Star break, deserve plenty of respect as defending champions it’s not hard to see why Boston is favoured to win its first title since 2008.

Of course, Boston has been in and around the championship picture the last five seasons, going to the Conference Finals twice while also going down to Golden State in the NBA Finals.

But this feels different and this looks different.

NBA Wrap: Tatum talks up Celtics | 02:41

Just ask the Warriors, who had turned a corner recently to rise up the Western Conference standings and firmly into the playoff picture.

Golden State had won 13 of its past 16 games before running into Boston on Monday morning. It was supposed to be an early litmus test of sorts — and the results were resounding.

The Warriors were no match for the Celtics, who ran up a score to take the largest halftime lead (82-38) in franchise history.

The numbers laid out just how dominant Boston was, shooting 60.0 and 62.5 per cent from the field and downtown respectively compared to just 34.9 and 16.7 for Golden State.

Superstar duo Jaylen Brown (25 points) and Jayson Tatum (22) combined to outscore the Warriors by themselves while Derrick White had 11 points and six assists in the first half.

What made Boston’s blowout opening half even more impressive was the fact it came without Kristaps Porzingis, who missed Monday’s game with a left quad contusion.

Richard Jefferson described it as a “perfect half of basketball” from the Celtics, declaring they had put the entire league on notice.

“This is maybe as good as any team has played in the first half this season,” Jefferson said.

“I think the entire league needs to be watching what the Boston Celtics are doing and understanding that they are the team to beat.

“I understand that the Denver Nuggets are the defending champions but to me there is no greater threat to them really going on a run and winning a couple than what the Boston Celtics are presenting this season.”

“They are so jaw-droppingly good right now, you just feel the need to keep exclaiming [that fact]. They are just in such an incredible rhythm right now,” Ryan Ruocco added.

“Up and down the roster, Brad Stevens has to be enamoured with the way this squad is playing.”

It wasn’t just on the offensive side of the ball that the Celtics were excelling, also putting the clamps on Warriors superstar Steph Curry, who missed all nine of his 3-point attempts in the half.

“They are just harassing him… he is just not seeing any daylight,” Jefferson said.

Golden State’s 38 points were the fewest it had scored in any half this season while the 82 scored by Boston was the most it had given up.

Jimmy Butler among five banned as NBA comes down hard after wild all-in brawl

After all of the chaos and shoving that unfolded Friday night, five players from the Heat and Pelicans — including Jimmy Butler — were suspended, the NBA announced Sunday.

Butler and Pelicans forward Naji Marshall each were suspended for one game for “instigating and engaging in an on-court altercation,” while Thomas Bryant and Jose Alvarado were suspended three games for leaving the Miami and New Orleans benches, respectively, and fighting on the court.

Nikola Jović, a Heat forward, was suspended one game for leaving their bench during the brawl and “entering an on-court altercation,” and those absences will start — or be served — when the teams each play their next game.

The incident occurred early in the fourth quarter of their game Friday, when Zion Williamson stole the ball and was grabbed by Kevin Love when attempting a layup — causing him to fall onto the Smoothie King Center court after the shot attempt.

A cluster of players raced over, and at one point, Butler tried to pull Marshall away from the group and received a shove from the 26-year-old small forward in return.

Later, as the shoving continued, Marshall appeared to grab the area around Butler’s neck.

Referees and team staffers had seemingly separated everyone after about 30 seconds, but after a brief pause, players started sprinting back toward each other from the benches — with the Bally Sports announcers specifically referencing Bryant and Jović by name, while a video from the stands captured Bryant and Alvarado exchanging punches near the scorer’s table.

Williamson told reporters postgame that Love “actually protected me on my foul,” while Butler attributed Marshall putting “his hands on K-Love” as the reason for why the situation escalated.Butler, Marshall, Alvarado and Bryant were all ejected from the game, in addition to receiving technical fouls, and the Heat ended up winning, 106-95, behind 24 points from Bam Adebayo.

“It was just, I think, a misunderstanding of the play,” Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters postgame, according to the Associated Press. “I think Zion slipped on the play when K-Love grabbed him and it looked a lot worse than what it was. And then everybody kind of overreacted.”

Miami travels to Sacramento and will face the Kings on Monday without Butler, Bryant and Jović, while the Pelicans won’t have Marshall and Alvarado when they host the Bulls on Sunday.

  • Simmons suffers another injury setback; Paolo’s emotional post-match interview: NBA Wrap

Simmons suffers another injury setback; Paolo’s emotional post-match interview: NBA Wrap

The Nets came into Saturday (all times US) wondering how to get Ben Simmons playing well alongside another non-shooter.

Now they’re just wondering how to keep him playing at all.

The oft-injured Simmons, the only All-Star on Brooklyn’s roster, went down again. This time he got forced out of their 101-86 loss to Minnesota before a sellout crowd of 18,024 at the Target Center with a leg injury.

Simmons has played just 55 games for the Nets since being acquired at the 2022 Trade Deadline at the cost of former MVP James Harden. Most of that missed time is due to a herniated disc, and leg injuries brought on by those aforementioned back woes.

Now Brooklyn’s starting point guard has another issue, forced out of the game with left leg soreness with 8:04 left in the third quarter.

He was ruled out for the rest of the evening.

When Simmons left, Brooklyn was trailing 53-51, and promptly knotted the score on a Nic Claxton alley oop from his replacement, Dennis Schroder.

The Nets — who bounced back nicely from a dismal loss Thursday at Toronto in interim Kevin Ollie’s debut — led 72-70 on a short Cam Thomas jumper with 9:28 to play.

But that’s when Minnesota finally pulled away.

Brooklyn coughed up a 19-6 run, and never challenged after that.

New Jersey native Kyle Anderson put the Timberwolves ahead 89-78, and the game was essentially over.

There was some added spice with Schroder fouling Mike Conley on a 3-point attempt in the waning garbage time seconds, and getting pushed by Nickeil Alexander-Walker to prompt an altercation review.

Four technical fouls got handed out. And none mattered.

    Brioklyn fell to 21-35.

Karl Anthony-Towns, another New Jerseyan, had a game-high 28 points and nine rebounds for Minnesota.

Anthony Edwards added 26 points and eight boards for the Timberwolves, who played without centre Rudy Gobert.

Turns out they didn’t need their defensive shot-blocker.

Cam Thomas led the Nets with a modest 18 points and six rebounds, while Mikal Bridges added 15 points, eight assists and six rebounds.

Brooklyn shot just 34.0 per cent, and a staggeringly-bad 6-of-35 from 3-point range.

Coming in, putting Simmons on the floor with another non-shooter had been their concern. Now they have bigger problems.

The fired Jacque Vaughn never quite found the perfect way to compensate for Simmons’ lack of a jumper.

“Yeah, that’s what we’re trying to push him, and I think he is able to do it,” said Ollie. “And when we get in halfcourt situations, having him play with pace and having us have the right spacing around him is gonna be crucial. But when he sees that gap, he’s got to take it to the rim. I think he’ll do that.”

BANCHERO LIFTS MAGIC, TEARS UP POST MATCH

Paolo Banchero’s three-point play with 0.1 of a second remaining gave the Orlando Magic a 112-109 victory at Detroit. Banchero sank the game-winning jumper while being fouled and added the free throw for the dramatic triumph.

“It was important,” said a tearful Banchero of his final shot. “It was a hard game and I’ve been sick. I’ve been feeling terrible. I just give credit to my teammates. They lifted me up the whole game.

“I don’t know why I’m crying. It was a hard game. I’m proud of my team.” Banchero’s 15 points led eight double-figure scorers for

Orlando, which improved to 32-25, level with Indiana for sixth in the East.

The Pistons, led by Cade Cunningham’s 26 points, fell to an NBA-worst 8-48 with a fifth consecutive loss.

Franz Wagner’s free throw gave Orlando a 109-105 lead with 96 seconds remaining. Cunningham answered with a jumper and a layup for

Detroit, the latter pulling the Pistons level at 109-109 with 12 seconds remaining, setting the stage for Banchero’s heroics.

CELTICS DOWN KNICKS, EXTEND WINNING STREAK TO EIGHT

Jaylen Brown scored 30 points and Kristaps Porzingis added 22 as the Boston Celtics stretched their NBA win streak to eight games on Saturday by defeating New York 116-102.

The Celtics improved to NBA’s best record to 45-12 and boosted their win streak to a season high while stretching their Eastern Conference lead over second-place Cleveland to eight games.

Jayson Tatum added 19 points, six rebounds and six assists as Boston had six scorers in double figures.

“We’ve got so many good players on our team,” Tatum said. “We always talk about respecting each other’s space. It’s about understanding it’s a rhythm game. It’s going to come back to you eventually.”

Tatum says the players adopt a long-term approach, keeping in mind the overall goal is an NBA title in June.

“We have a really good team and we understand the important goal, what we’re really trying to accomplish, so every single night we’re trying to share the love, play the right way and make sure we win more often than not,” Tatum said.

Jalen Brunson had game highs of 34 points and nine assists to lead the Knicks, who fell to 34-23.

Porzingis, who began his NBA career with the Knicks in 2015, sank two 3-pointers and Brown scored five points in a 17-5 third-quarter Boston run that gave the Celtics their biggest lead to that point at 84-71 on the way to a 97-84 lead after three quarters – the Celtics hitting 68% of their shots from the floor entering the fourth quarter.

Boston kept the Knicks scoreless for five minutes in the heart of the fourth quarter to help seal New York’s fate, the Celtics stretching the lead as high as 20 points.

‘Flock it’: Savage response to analyst’s ‘McDonald’s’ Zion jab as NBA social media war erupts

Clearly, the New Orleans Pelicans didn’t take too kindly to NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith’s recent criticism towards Zion Williamson.

Smith on ESPN’s ‘Get Up’ challenged Williamson, who’s made headlines across his career due to injuries and off-court issues including at times appearing to not be in peak physical condition, for the former Pick 1’s commitment to staying “in shape.”

“Zion Williamson, it’s not about his game. It’s about how many burgers he’s eating and whether or not he’s gonna be in shape. Or is he gonna keep eating McDonald’s?,” Smith said on the program.

“That’s what he has to prove — that the chefs don’t love him any longer, that he’s committed to playing basketball and being in shape.”

Well, the Pelicans social media team fired back in a not-so-subtle way.

The team posted a graphic of Smith’s college basketball stats, where he averaged just 1.5 points per game in one season followed by a montage of Smith’s “highlights.”

To no great surprise, the often outspoken Smith responded via X (formerly known as Twitter).

“LESS!!! Can’t score when you can’t play due to a devastating knee injury. That’s my fact,” Smith posted on social media.

“Now……what’s y’all excuse for never winning anything??? Can’t wait to see y’all in April. May and June? We won’t even go there! Good Luck! Tell my boys…Coach Green and CJ I’m always rooting for them.”

Smith continued in a seperate post: “I could zero in but I won’t! I happen to be fans of several players, plus the coach and definitely that city. You play. I’ll be watching. I’m not going anywhere! Good luck!

“Oh, by the way……I think y’all already know y’all can’t TALK nearly as much as me. So…..be my guest! I’ve got 24/7…….365 days a year!”

Williamson has averaged 22.5 points per game, 5.4 rebounds and 4.9 assists for the 34-22 Pelicans, who sit fifth in the Western Conference.

  • ‘B**ch’: Durant’s heated fan moment, responds to burning question on NBA future

‘B**ch’: Durant’s heated fan moment, responds to burning question on NBA future

Two Mavericks fans may owe Suns superstar Kevin Durant a big thanks for keeping them from getting kicked out of American Airlines Center on Thursday night (all times US).

The two fans — a man and a woman — sat near where Phoenix players were coming out of the locker room when one of the spectators yelled out “bitch” toward Durant as he was taking the floor, according to WFAA’s Jonah Javad, who was standing courtside and was shooting video.

Durant clearly heard the comment and quickly turned around to confront the two fans, who were seated three rows back from the floor.

While the music playing over the PA system made it hard to hear what the two-time NBA Finals MVP was saying in the video, the conversation was a lengthy one, and the female fan attempted to reach out for what seemed to be a high-five for a handshake from Durant several times.

Both fans wore Mavericks attire, and Durant eventually waved his hand in frustration and walked away.

But the situation took another twist when security was about to toss the two fans from the building, and Durant walked back over to tell them not to, Javad reported.

Players have not been shy about confronting fans or having them tossed from games when they feel their comments cross a certain line in recent years.

And Thursday’s incident wasn’t even the first time this season that a fan has created a potential issue during a game between the Mavericks and Suns.

Just last month, Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic had a fan removed from Footprint Center after the fan shouted at Doncic that he “looked tired” and needed to “get on a treadmill.”

Nets sack head coach Jacque Vaughn | 00:33

After the January game, Durant was asked about the fan ejection at the Suns arena.

“If somebody talk some s – t to me, I’ll talk it back and we’ll move on,” Durant told the Arizona Republic following the Doncic incident. “That’s usually how it should go. Once it gets overboard, little disrespectful to the point you got to stop the game, that’s different. A little quick word here and there is never bad.”

Durant appeared to be a man of his word on Thursday when he found himself in a similar spot.

The Suns lost Thursday’s game to the Mavericks, 123-113, and Durant finished the night with 23 points on 9 of 23 shooting.

The NBA superstar is in his first full season with the Suns after he was traded by the Nets last year as they closed their “Big 3” era.

In an interview that aired on ESPN earlier in the night, Durant was asked if he wanted to finish his career in Phoenix.

“Right now, in this moment today without thinking about the next moment, yeah,” Durant responded. “But that’s just saying right now and I can’t really predict what may happen, but I love playing in Phoenix. I love the fan base, the city. I’ve grown to understand what our mission is being in the Valley and how deeply these people care about their team.

“I started to understand the history of the Suns and I’m glad to be a part of it. I want to go up in that Ring of Honor one day.”

The Suns are the fourth organisation that Durant has played for during his NBA career.
