‘Fantastic’ – Caicedo compared to Chelsea legend and tipped for huge club honour

Moises Caicedo’s excellent showing against West Ham at the weekend was similar to an N’Golo Kante-style performance.

That’s according to John Obi Mikel, who has also predicted the Blues midfielder to become a future key leader for the club.

Caicedo was crucial to Chelsea’s success in their 3-0 away win at West Ham as he assisted Nicolas Jackson for their second goal of the day.

The Ecuadorian international put in a much improved shift compared to his last visit to the London Stadium, in which he conceded a penalty on what was his Blues debut.

His performance shows how settled he now is at Chelsea, with former midfielder Mikel comparing him to the legendary Kante.

“Best game in a Chelsea shirt,” said his Obi One Podcast co-host Chris McHardy, and Mikel replied: “Yeah, he was everywhere.

“We’ve talked about Moises Caicedo and how much we thought… Of course, he didn’t start his Chelsea career really well and a few games into his Chelsea career, there were loads of mistakes.

“Everyone was thinking, ‘Why did we pay so much money for this guy?’ Now we can see those performances that he was performing at Brighton and stuff like that so, an absolutely fantastic player.

“Everywhere on Saturday. Not just breaking up play, trying to link-up play as well, passing, everything.

“Now you can feel this is the Moises Caicedo that we all know and also when you watch him, when you look at him right now, you can see that there’s a bit of confidence there.

“There’s a bit of, ‘Ok, now I’m playing for Chelsea Football Club, this is my team.’ With the performances, with the way he behaves on the pitch, there is no sort of [ego]… Exactly!

“He’s absolutely fantastic, I watched him there, he was everywhere. It’s a bit like a Kante kind of performance, all credit to Moises and also for the manager to give him such confidence and to make sure that he believes in him.”

Enzo Fernandez captained Chelsea against West Ham, with the club’s designated skipper Reece James still out with a hamstring issue.

Argentina international Fernandez has worn the armband for the Blues on two occasions this season but Mikel thinks that could be given to Caicedo in the long term.

“Now he’s paid off with the performances and this is the guy that I think will eventually go on to maybe, probably captain the team,” Mikel added.

Despite it being only his second season at Chelsea, Caicedo has made 55 appearances in competitions.

Starts have come in all five of their Premier League matches in the current campaign, as well as in their 2-0 Conference League qualifying first leg first leg win over Servette.

Caicedo could be set for a rest on Tuesday night when Chelsea host League Two Barrow in the Carabao Cup third round, live on talkSPORT 2.

Al-Nassr and Al-Ittihad have been linked with a move for the World Cup winner amid Kante being yet to put pen to paper on a new deal at Stamford Bridge.

It was earlier reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano Saudi emissaries are in London to present an official proposal to Kante and his representatives.

The Chelsea midfielder is out of contract this summer, meaning that he’ll be available on a free transfer at the end of June.

Kante missed long spells of the season due to a hamstring injury, but came back into contention in the final weeks of the campaign.

Asked if he’d like to stay with Chelsea, Kante told Sky Sports last month: “For sure.

“It’s an exciting project for the club. Unfortunately this season hasn’t been to Chelsea’s standards.

“But everyone wants to go in this way, the way of success and winning titles. I hope this club will again fight in this direction.

“Let’s see where I will be, but I hope that this is a change for the club, that is most important.”

Meanwhile, Palace icon Zaha has been offered the chance to become the highest paid player in the Eagles’ history to extend his stay at Selhurst Park.

Should they make the move, Kante and Zaha would become the latest names to join a Saudi Arabian club with Real Madrid legend Karim Benzema completing a switch to Saudi Pro League champions Al Ittihad.

Kante story reemerges to remind us why Chelsea star is everybody’s favourite footballer

N’Golo Kante is everybody’s favourite footballer and there’s plenty of stories to prove it.

One such tale about the Chelsea star came from retired defender Felipe Saad back in 2021 who told a story that dated back to the midfielder’s time with French side Caen between 2013 and 2015.

The 32-year-old is renowned for his down-to-earth personality and that was made clear as Saad recalled what Kante did when he invited him to a birthday party while playing together in France.

Speaking to Brazilian outlet Uol Sport, Saad said: “I called [N’Golo] Kanté for my birthday, it was a small party.

“Suddenly, he arrived at the restaurant with a box of chocolates, all ashamed.

“He apologised for the gift and said he didn’t know what to get because he had never been invited to a birthday party before.”

Kante’s humble nature shouldn’t detract from the stellar career that he’s had in the game.

After playing his part in helping Leicester to a miracle Premier League title in 2016, he joined Chelsea where he has won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Champions League, the Europa League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

He’s also won the World Cup with France in 2018, as well as getting a runners’ up medal at the Euros in 2016.

With a Chelsea contract that expires this summer, fans will be hoping that the 32-year-old will stick around to provide more fond memories as one of football’s true good guys.

After a seven-month absence, Kante was back in the Blues’ matchday squad for the recent 2-2 draw with Everton.

As part of his rehabilitation process, the World Cup winning midfielder took part in a match between Chelsea and Chartlon’s Under-21s on Friday.

Teammates Mount and Thiago Silva were pictured in attendance as Kante lasted 60 minutes and came through unscathed.

In a touching show of support, Mount wore Kante’s No.7 shirt over his coat.

It was also a positive afternoon for the Blues’ youth side as they secured a 3-0 victory thanks to goals from Silko Thomas, Malik Mothersille and Dion Rankine.

The return of Kante will be a huge boost to Graham Potter and his side.

Chelsea have at least 13 fixtures remaining this season, including 11 in the Premier League and two clashes with Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter finals.

Despite sitting in tenth, the Blues can still salvage their disappointing season with a late charge for the top four – or even an unlikely triumph in Europe.

  • Chelsea receive injury boost as 2 key players return to training

Chelsea receive injury boost as 2 key players return to training

Chelsea duo N’Golo Kante and Christian Pulisic have returned to group training ahead of the Blues’ clash with Leeds United on Saturday (March 4). The pair have been sidelined with injuries but could give Graham Potter a vital boost by returning to the team.

Kante has been out of action since August with a hamstring injury. He has featured just twice across competitions. The French midfielder’s absence has been felt, with the Blues lacking a midfield anchor. Meanwhile, Pulisic suffered a knee injury at the start of January. The American winger has made 21 appearances, scoring one goal and providing two assists.

Chelsea have confirmed on their official website that the duo were back in team training on Monday (February 27). Potter’s side returned to training after a dismal 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday (February 26).

The Evening Standard reports that the Blues are hopeful of Pulisic being able to feature against Leeds on Saturday. Meanwhile, Kante will need more time to get back to full fitness after spending so much time on the sidelines.

Nevertheless, the news of the pair returning is massive for Chelsea, who are enduring a torrid season.

They are 10th in the league, trailing fourth-placed Tottenham by 11 points. Potter has dealt with an injury crisis since taking over last September. However, only Armando Broja and Edouard Mendy are the players that will remain sidelined following Kante and Pulisic’s return to fitness.

Chelsea are reportedly preparing to sell Marc Cucurella in the summer

Marc Cucurella could be put on the transfer market.
Marc Cucurella could be put on the transfer market.

Cucurella joined Chelsea from Potter’s former side Brighton & Hove Albion last summer for £60 million. However, the Spanish left-back has struggled at Stamford Bridge. He has made 26 appearances, providing two assists and helping the side keep eight clean sheets. His performances have been in stark contrast to his debut season in the Premier League with Brighton. He was named the Seagulls’ Player of the Year for the 2021-22 campaign.

According to 90min, the Blues are preparing to put Cucurella up for sale in the summer. This would come as a surprise given his lack of time at the club. Alongside this, the Spaniard also provides competition to Ben Chilwell at left-back, the latter is plagued by constant injury issues.

🗣️ “I didn’t hear any of that.”Graham Potter says he didn’t hear any boos by Chelsea fans towards Marc Cucurella in Dortmund. He also confirms that the player had his house broken into shortly after joining the club. https://t.co/LesCWFAJV1

Cucurella signed a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge last summer. He was joined by his former manager Potter in September but the pair have not been able to rediscover the form they found together at the Amex Stadium.
