Joel Embiid has signed a contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers, the team announced on Friday, with the Cameroon-born centre saying he wants to stay a Sixer his NBA entire career.
Multiple reports said the deal was a maximum extension for three years and about $193 million ($283.8m AUD) that would keep him with the 76ers through the 2028-29 campaign.
“Philadelphia is home. I want to be here for the rest of my career,” Embiid posted on his Instagram account.
“I love this community and everything you’ve given me and my family. There is a lot more work to do. You guys deserve a championship and I think we’re just getting started!”
Embiid, the 2023 NBA Most Valuable Player, is a seven-footer (2.13m) and seven-time NBA All-Star who helped the United States win Olympic gold in Paris last month.
The contract extension means Embiid’s existing deal now has five seasons left and is worth $442.65 million (AUD).
That contract total is among the three richest in NBA history.
The two-time NBA scoring champion, set to begin his ninth NBA campaign next month, said in a statement he wants to bring the 76ers their first NBA crown since 1983.
“I started a Sixer and want to be right here for the rest of my career,” Embiid said.
“I had no idea when I was drafted as a 20-year-old kid from Cameroon how lucky I was to be in Philadelphia.
“Through all the ups and downs, this city and the fans have been everything and I am so grateful for how they’ve embraced me.
“Philadelphia is home and it’s time to bring this community an NBA championship.”
Embiid averaged a career-high 34.7 points, 11.0 rebounds and career-bests of 5.6 assists and 1.2 steals plus 1.7 blocked shots last season and had career-high accuracy from 3-point range and the free throw line.

“Joel has cemented himself as one of the greatest Sixers of all time and is well on his way to being one of the best players to ever play the game,” 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey said.
“We’re ecstatic that this extension keeps him and his family in Philadelphia for years to come.
“He’s an elite two-way player with a combination of size, strength, and athleticism that this league has rarely, if ever, seen.
“He’s integral to this franchise’s quest for another NBA championship and we’re honoured that he continues to choose this organisation as his NBA home.”
Embiid, the third pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, has averaged 27.9 points, 11.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.7 blocked shots over 433 games with the Sixers.
The 76ers have reached the playoffs in each of the past seven seasons but have not reached the Eastern Conference finals during the run.
ESPN’s Pablo Torre says the 76ers made the right choice to extend Embiid despite the fact Philadelphia have never made the Eastern Conference finals in his eight-years in the ‘City of Brotherly Love’.
“When it comes to what was the choice, I believe there was no choice,” Torre said on Pardon the Interruption.
“I believe you stick with Joel Embiid and give him all of that money and the reason I say that is I think they have the best big three in the NBA – Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Paul George.”
PTI’s host Tony Kornheiser disagreed, thinking Embiid hasn’t gone close to delivering a title to Philly.
“Am I convinced Joel Embiid will deliver a championship? No, and why should I?” Kornheiser said.
“You’ve played there for eight years and you’ve never made the conference final. So now, you have Paul George, who is one of the least clutch players
“If you ask me for the visual of Joel Embiid, it’s him laying on his back holding his leg because he’s always hurt. He averages 54 games a year.”
The biggest names have been snapped up but there are still a host of stars across the NBA that could be on the move, with the Lakers hoping to land one of them.
Here is the latest free agency and trade news to know across the league!
WARRIORS LAND SHARPSHOOTER TO REPLACE KLAY
The Golden State Warriors may have lost Klay Thompson but they have found quite the replacement, landing sharpshooter Buddy Hield in free agency.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported the news on Friday, with the Warriors acquiring Hield via sign-and-trade from the Philadelphia 76ers in a deal that will involve five teams.
“The Warriors will send a 2031 second-round pick from Dallas, received in the Klay Thompson departure, back to Philadelphia in return, rerouting it as part of the five-team deal that also includes the Charlotte Hornets and Minnesota Timberwolves,” Charania wrote.
Hield has reportedly signed a four-year deal with two years and $18 million guaranteed, with a $3 million partial guarantee in the third year and a player option in the fourth year, which is not guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Charania, meanwhile, reported that Hield chose the Warriors “because of the opportunity to win”, overlooking interest from the Detroit Pistons and Los Angeles Lakers.

LAKERS TURN ATTENTION TO ANOTHER TARGET
Speaking of the Lakers, with Hield off to Golden State and Thompson headed to the Mavericks, they have set their sights on another high-end scorer to help bolster their lineup for next season.
Los Angeles is now trying to land free agent DeMar DeRozan, according to a report by The Athletic.
The LA native and USC product is a six-time All-Star and averaged 24 points per game last season for the Bulls.
His time in the Windy City is all but over, but the Lakers aren’t the only team interested in trying to add DeRozan’s services.
Both the Miami Herald and The Athletic reported that the Heat have an interest in bringing in the forward as well, with Miami viewed as the slight favourite to land DeRozan.
DeRozan, 34, has met with the Heat and discussed what his potential fit would be, and it appeared that there was a mutual interest between the two sides, according to the Miami Herald.
There may be some complications for the Heat to land DeRozan, with Miami likely having to facilitate a trade of a player who makes decent money to a team with cap space and thus allowing the room for Miami to pull off a sign and trade with the Bulls for DeRozan.
‘He looks old’ – Patty shouldn’t start?! | 02:43
If the Heat wanted to go the non-trade route, they would be able to sign him at the $5.2 million taxpayer midlevel exception rate.
The Lakers, though, have said that they plan on being aggressive to update the roster.
“I think we’re gonna always be aggressive to try to make roster upgrades and will be relentless to continue to look at what we can do,” general manager Rob Pelinka said, according to The Athletic.
“This is the season of being mindful of all the different things we can approach to improve the roster. So we’re in the midst of that as we speak.
“That will continue in the coming days, and it often spills into Vegas, where all the GMs meet and gather, and other deals get done. But we’ll stay aggressive.”
In other news, it still sounds like the New Orleans Pelicans are looking to trade Brandon Ingram.
The Pelicans made a big all-in swing by landing Dejounte Murray but NBA insider Marc Stein reported on Friday that attempts to trade Ingram have “intensified in recent days”, citing league sources.
“Sources tell The Stein Line that on Ingram’s side, with the reality that the contract extension terms his camp had hoped for are not forthcoming from the Pelicans, there has likewise been exploration of trade options,” Stein added.
He went on to report that re-signing Trey Murphy III and adding to the frontcourt in the wake of Jonas Valanciunas’ departure to Washington are two other priorities for New Orleans this offseason along with the Ingram trade.
As for which teams could be in the hunt for Ingram, Stein wrote that the Sacramento Kings are said to have “explored the feasibility and fit of an Ingram pursuit”.
The Kings look to be very active in trade talks though, with Stein adding Sacramento has had similar discussions on Utah’s Lauri Markkanen, Washington’s Kyle Kuzma and Chicago’s DeRozan.
Crucially, Stein wrote that Kevin Huerter and Harrison Barnes are the pieces the Kings would look to package in such a trade — not Keegan Murray.

SIXERS LOOKING TO SIGN PAUL GEORGE’S FORMER CLIPPERS TEAMMATE
Elsewhere, Paul George may have a familiar face join him in Philadelphia.
The 76ers are considering signing George’s former Clippers teammate and Philadelphia native Marcus Morris Sr. as part of their roster re-tool, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Morris reportedly has a host of suitors, including the Pistons, Spurs, Cavaliers, Timberwolves, Heat, Mavericks and Hornets.
George is headlining the 76ers’ acquisitions after agreeing to a four-year, $212 million max contract early in free agency, and Philadelphia is now looking for ways to improve on the margins.
Morris played alongside George for four seasons with the Clippers from 2019-23, and having a familiar face could help George’s transition.
The Philadelphia Inquirer noted that the former Kansas star would help provide some toughness, which seemed to be lacking during the 76ers’ first-round playoff loss to the Knicks this spring.
The Knicks ultimately seemed like the tougher team than the 76ers, consistently making critical plays in crunch time and rising to the occasion.
Ironically, the 76ers could have had Morris’ toughness last postseason but they traded him to the Spurs in the three-team trade that brought sharpshooter Buddy Hield to the City of Brotherly Love.
Why Thybulle is out and Delly is in | 03:40
The Spurs promptly waived the veteran and he joined the Cavaliers for their playoff push, which ended with a second-round loss to the eventual champion Celtics.
Morris averaged 6.4 points and 2.7 rebounds last season spanning his time with the 76ers and Cavaliers.
“The 6-foot-8, 218-pounder’s high basketball IQ, selfless play, and Philly toughness were on full display here,” the paper reported.
“He made the Sixers better not only with his play but with his leadership on and off the court.”
The 76ers have been one of the busier teams in the NBA during free agency, while they try to keep pace in the arms race that has engulfed the Eastern Conference.
Philadelphia also retained wing Kelly Oubre and added veteran guard Eric Gordon and rebounding whiz Andre Drummond, while notably losing Tobias Harris to the Pistons.
The 76ers’ flurry of activity pushed them past the Knicks in 2024-25 title odds, with Philadelphia owning the fourth-best odds at FanDuel and second in the Eastern Conference behind the Celtics.

Elsewhere, Klay Thompson is also set to leave Golden State and is not short of suitors, with the Sixers, Lakers, Nuggets, Magic and Clippers all reported to have shown interest.
The Mavericks, however, are said to be the leading contender and it could mean Australian Josh Green is on the verge of being traded to the Warriors.

KLAY THOMPSON
It looks like the end of an era for Thompson.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported on Sunday that there has virtually been no talks between Thompson and the Warriors in recent weeks and that the sharpshooter is “determined to find a new home”.
Charania wrote that according to team and league scores, “Thompson and the Warriors have had close to no communication since the negotiating period opened for incumbent free agents nearly two weeks ago and no offer has been made”.
“Warriors, after other business, have wanted to circle back and negotiate with Thompson. But he isn’t expected to be there waiting as a willing secondary priority in their summer plan, with his side feeling that the Warriors’ interest in a reunion has been disingenuous,” he added.
With that in mind, who shapes as the likely candidates to land Thompson?
Well, the Magic and Nuggets had been linked to him but it seems like the Mavericks and Lakers are at the top of the list.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski also reported that Thompson plans to have discussions with the Clippers and 76ers.
Stein reported that “barring an 11th-hour resuscitation of Thompson’s relationship with the Warriors”, Dallas and L.A. “projected to be the two teams at the forefront of Thompson’s thinking”.
Stein wrote that LeBron James could be willing to take a paycut if what Chris Haynes described as one of the “right targets” was happy to take the Lakers’ $13 million midlevel exception.
In spite of that, league sources told Stein “there will be strong mutual interest between Thompson and the Mavericks”, with Dallas expected to free up enough money to make a competitive offer after trading Tim Hardaway Jr. to Detroit.
The Mavericks may have to offload Australian Josh Green for salary matching purposes in the event of a sign-and-trade with Golden State.
That would elevate Quentin Grimes into a more prominent role after the Mavericks traded for him as part of the Hardaway Jr. deal.
If Green was dealt he would become the third Australian to be traded this summer after Dyson Daniels was moved to Atlanta and Josh Giddey was sent to Chicago.
The Mavericks had hoped to keep Derrick Jones Jr. too but he plans to sign a three-year, $30 million deal with the Clippers according to Shams Charania.

THUNDER ARE MAKING MOVES
The Oklahoma City Thunder were one of the biggest risers last season, finishing the regular season as the top seed in the West before coming up short in the conference semi-finals.
Only a few weeks have passed since the end of the season and already Thunder general manager Sam Presti has made it clear the team is not playing around.
Instead, Oklahoma City has made aggressive moves to put itself in an even stronger position to contend in what once again shapes to be an extremely competitive Western Conference.
First, the Thunder traded Josh Giddey for Alex Caruso and then in free agency added free agent big man Isaiah Hartenstein on a three-year, $87 million deal according to multiple reports.
OKC didn’t stop there though, re-signing key role players Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins on shrewd deals to complete what looks like one of the deepest rosters in the NBA next season.
Joe extended on a four-year, $48 million deal while Wiggins is coming back on a five-year, $47 million contract.
RUSSELL WESTBROOK
While Westbrook picked up his $4 million player option with the Clippers, it appears he is poised for a sign-and-trade as opposed to staying put in Los Angeles.
And the Nuggets look the likely landing spot for him.
Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reported Westbrook was a potential target for the $5.2 million taxpayer midlevel exception and the Nuggets are said to be looking to part ways with Zeke Nnaji in under to get under the second tax apron and open up their MLE.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported Denver “has shown a level of interest” in Westbrook, who the Clippers are said to be “actively working on trades to move”.

The rumour mill has already been heating up and now the NBA’s 2024 free agency period is officially here, with a number of big names potentially on the move.
Teams will be able to start negotiating with free agents at 8am on Monday morning [AEST] but can’t officially sign them to contracts until 2.01am on Saturday.
In the meantime though, all eyes will be on Paul George and Klay Thompson, with the pair both looking likely at this stage to be on new teams next season.
Follow along in our live blog below for the latest updates as the free agency window opens!
In case you missed it, here is a rundown on where things stand with some of the potential superstar free agents this summer.
The Clippers declined his $48.7 million option on Sunday and will enter free agency, ruling out the possibility of a sign-and-trade.
The Golden State Warriors were holding out on the hope of landing George via trade so you can rule them out of the race for his signature, with the Magic and 76ers expecting to be the biggest threats to the Clippers re-signing the nine-time All-Star.
At this point though it looks like the only chance of George remaining in Los Angeles is if he settles for a three-year deal, having held out for a four-year contract to this point.
Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank signalled in a press conference after the NBA Draft that the team would not be budging from its three-year offer.
“This is a business and the reality of the new CBA impacts teams like us,” he said.
“When your better players are in their 30s and you’re trying to build a sustainable roster, it impacts it. Like if there was no CBA, with Steve Ballmer, it would be carte blanche.
“With the new CBA, it’s not even about the money as [much as it] is how are you going to build a sustainable roster [and] maintain your tools to have transactional flexibility? And with that comes really, really hard decisions.”
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Sixers are willing to offer George a four-year deal and also have more than $60 million in projected cap space to make a big play for the 34-year-old.
Stein also reported the Magic are in the mix too, having made George’s “three-team shortlist of finalists for face-to-face meetings” which will start on Monday.

* The Warriors and Chris Paul agreed to push back the date to Monday to guarantee the $30 million on his 2024-25 contract as Golden State explores a potential trade.
* Denver’s Kentavious Caldwell-Pope declined his player option and will become an unrestricted free agent. The Nuggets sharpshooter is expected to draw plenty of interest, with both the Mavericks and Magic linked to the championship-winning guard.
* New York’s Isaiah Hartenstein is another player who is expected to be a player in demand and the Knicks, who acquired Mikal Bridges and re-signed OG Anunoby to a five-year deal, are tipped to struggle to match rival offers.

The 34-year-old star is expected to meet with teams — including the Clippers — on Sunday night, per the outlet.
He now immediately becomes one of the top players available as free agency begins Sunday.
The Fresno State product played in 74 games during the 2023-24 regular season, the most he tallied in five seasons with Los Angeles.
He averaged 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and shot a career-high 41.3 per cent from 3-point range.
George was an All-Star the last two years after playing in only 31 games in 2021-22 due to a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right arm.
ESPN’s NBA insider Brian Windhorst offered on “Get Up” on June 24 that George had a “different menu of options,” including opting into the final year to facilitate a trade.
However, that’s now off the table.

One of those options included a new long-term deal with the Clippers, which did not come to fruition before the opt-out decision, although not for a lack of effort from the franchise.
Rumours had circulated about George potentially landing with the Knicks if he opted into his contract with Los Angeles, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
The 76ers were also a potential free agent landing spot since before the playoffs ended, but interest had seemingly faded, per The Athletic.
This past season, he worked alongside Kawhi Leonard and James Harden to help the Clippers secure the Western Conference’s No. 4 seed before losing in the first round to the Dallas Mavericks.
Since George’s arrival in Los Angeles in 2019, the Clippers have made the playoffs in four of five seasons, but they have yet to advance beyond the Western Conference Final.

First, Josh Giddey was traded by Oklahoma City to Chicago in exchange for Alex Caruso. Then, the Nets made two big trades, including sending Mikal Bridges to the Knicks, and acquired a haul of first-round picks in the process to put themselves firmly in rebuild mode.
Now, with the first round of the NBA Draft less than 24 hours away, speculation is abound as to what moves could follow as all eyes turn to one of the league’s biggest names.

WHAT HAPPENS WITH PAUL GEORGE?
One source described Clippers superstar Paul George as the “domino who will make it all go when he falls” according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
Well, it turns out Bridges was the next piece to be moved but that in itself could only further incentivise contending teams to make a big swing for George before this weekend?
Stein has also reported that there is a “growing feeling leaguewide” that George picking up his $48.8 million player option for next season and effectively forcing the Clippers to trade him is an “increasingly realistic scenario”.
It comes after the two sides have seemingly failed to come to an agreement on the length of his extension.
The Clippers can offer George a four-year, $221 million deal but have reportedly only been willing to table a three year, $152.3 million contract as they did to Kawhi Leonard.
The issue being that George wants four and the 76ers, who have heavily been linked to George this summer, are one of the teams who could feasibly offer around four years and $212 million.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst had reported earlier in the week that there was the possibility George could opt into the final year of his contract and be traded “this weekend”.
Paul George could be traded. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images
“That is something that is going to come to a head in the next day or two if he wants to go with that option, because obviously you’d have to negotiate a trade,” Windhorst said on ‘Get Up’.
“Then, the team wouldn’t necessarily need salary cap space.‘We’re going to see some action in that, probably coming up very quickly after the draft.”
While the 76ers are one of the teams that have come up a lot this offseason as a potential George suitor, Stein noted that he is “pretty sure” the Warriors are as interested in him as the Knicks.
“Maybe more,” he added.
Of course, the Knicks have since made that blockbuster move for Bridges so you can rule them out of a potential play at George.
Golden State, meanwhile, is “aggressively exploring trade options” in general according to Stein, who added that the Chris Paul contract is “at the centre of those efforts”.
THE OTHER ‘BIG’ DRAFT DAY MOVE THAT COULD BE ON THE CARDS
One of the other bigger names who could be on the move shortly is Pelicans wing Brandon Ingram.
Stein had previously reported that there was a “growing belief leaguewide” that New Orleans would “seriously explore the trade market” for Ingram before next season.
Now he has reported before the draft that “anticipation” that Ingram will “soon” be on the move has “only swelled” six weeks after he first reported that news.
Interestingly, Stein noted the Pelicans are “known to be longtime admirers” of Dejounte Murray and the Hawks have long been expected to part ways with either Murray or Trae Young before next season.
Meanwhile, 76ers beat writer Kyle Neubeck said on the PHLY Sixers podcast that he thinks Philadelphia is likely not making its pick at 16 overall and is instead trying to package it and another future first round pick to land Ingram.
“That is my current mindset on what the big move is, that Brandon Ingram is this third guy,” Neubeck said.

WHAT COMES NEXT FOR THE KNICKS?
Well, attention now turns to what happens with OG Anunoby and Isaiah Hartenstein.
Bridges is obviously a big addition that will absolutely consolidate New York as a legitimate contender in the Eastern Conference next season.
But Anunoby and Hartenstein were also key pieces in what the Knicks achieved as they surged up to second in the standings last season.
Now the move for Bridges will require the Knicks to do serious salary cap gymnastics as they attempt to find a way to keep both Anunoby and Hartenstein on the books.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported the Knicks are “determined” to re-sign Anunoby, who is an unrestricted free agent.
It may be harder to keep Hartenstein, who looks the more likely to become a victim of cap restrictions, with Ian Begley of SNY reporting it is “increasingly unlikely” the Knicks will keep him.
Hartenstein is set to command a lot of interest on the open market after impressing in Mitchell Robinson’s absence, averaging 7.8 points and 8.3 rebounds while shooting 64 percent from the field.
One of the NBA’s household names might soon be on the move.
ESPN’s NBA insider Brian Windhorst offered Tuesday on ‘Get Up’ that the Clippers could trade star forward Paul George by “this weekend.”
Windhorst explained that George has a “different menu of options,” including opting into the final year of his contract with the Clippers to facilitate a trade — which would necessitate the fastest timeline.
“He could opt into his contract and get traded by this weekend,” Windhorst said.
“That is something that is going to come to a head in the next day or two if he wants to go with that option, because obviously you’d have to negotiate a trade. Then, the team wouldn’t necessarily need salary cap space.‘We’re going to see some action in that, probably coming up very quickly after the draft.”
One source, meanwhile, told NBA insider Marc Stein that George is the “domino who will make it all go when he falls”.
The Clippers have been trying to extend George before this latest fork in the road, with ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reporting that extension conversations between the two sides were “ongoing” after Kawhi Leonard signed a three-year, $153 million extension in mid-January.
George has one year worth $48.8 million left on the four-year extension he signed with Los Angeles in December 2020 worth up to $190 million.
Windhorst listed re-signing with the Clippers on a new deal as one of George’s three options, along with the opt-in leading into a trade or opting out of his deal to become a free agent.
The forward was an All-Star both of the last two years after playing in only 31 games in 2021-22 due to a torn UCL in his right arm.
This past year, the Fresno State product teamed up with Leonard and James Harden to help the Clippers claim the West’s No. 4 seed but lost in the first round to the Mavericks.
Since George arrived in Hollywood in 2019, the Clippers have made the playoffs in four of five seasons but have not advanced beyond the Western Conference finals.
If George opts into his contract to set up an exit from Los Angeles, insider Marc Stein reported that the Knicks could be a candidate to land the 34-year-old.
Other contenders for the nine-time All-Star, whether via trade or free agency, include the Magic, Rockets and 76ers, although a recent report made Philadelphia seem like a long shot.
George mostly recently made his debut as a commentator, assisting ESPN’s pregame coverage of Games 3 and 4 of the NBA Finals.
NEXT DOMINOES THAT COULD FALL… AND WHAT IT MAY MEAN FOR AUSSIE
So, if George ends up being moved, who are the next big names to keep an eye on in the NBA offseason?
Well, Stein reported that league sources believe Denver’s Kentavious Caldwell-Pope will be “among the players who will be most in demand” after George’s future is sorted.
Caldwell-Pope was Denver’s most underrated piece in the team’s championship run in the 2022-23 season and is one of the league’s best 3-and-D players, having now shot over 40 per cent from downtown in three of his past four seasons.
The Nuggets wing would help any contending team go to the next level, with Stein reporting that sources say Philadelphia and Orlando are considering making a play for Caldwell-Pope if he declines his $15.4 million player option with the Nuggets to enter free agency.
Elsewhere, Chris Paul could also be on the move with a key deadline on his future looming.
The veteran’s $30 million contract for next season will become guaranteed if he is on Golden State’s roster or another team’s after June 28.
If Paul was instead waived and entered free agency, Stein reported that the Lakers and Clippers are two teams that are expected to be interested in his services.
In other news, Chicago’s trade for Josh Giddey has predictably further cast a spotlight on Zach LaVine’s future at the franchise.
Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports reported that sources claim the Bulls are still “engaging rival teams on LaVine trade scenarios” and are “exploring options to move up in the draft”.
The prospect of a LaVine move, at least in the short-term, is hardly a sure thing though given there doesn’t seem to be much of a market for the star guard.
Woj explains shock Giddey trade to Bulls | 00:59
Fischer reported LaVine is “merely a backup option for the guard”, adding the Bulls “have yet to develop significant traction on deals” outside of talks with the Pistons that previously included the now traded Bojan Bogdanović.
Detroit also has a new president in Trajan Langdon, which further casts doubt on whether the front office has the same interest in LaVine under different leadership.
Fischer went on to report that if there is any suitor for LaVine it seems “most likely at this juncture” that it would be the Kings, who league sources told Yahoo Sports are “active in exploring trade opportunities” for Harrison Barnes and Kevin Huerter.
The report claims Huerter is receiving a “healthy amount of external interest”, while adding the Kings are also considering trade possibilities for their No. 13 pick.
Meanwhile, the Magic are facing the same deadline as the Warriors when it comes to deciding whether they will retain Australian Joe Ingles or let him become an unrestricted free agent.
Ingles will make $11 million next season if Orlando keeps him, with Fischer reporting that decision will largely hinge on how much money the Magic plan to spend in free agency and where negotiations go with Jalen Suggs, who is set for a rookie-scale extension.
‘This is no indictment on Josh’ | 06:21
“Orlando could very well exercise the 2024-25 option on Ingles’ deal, sources said, depending on how much room the Magic will need to operate through its overall offseason — with the knowledge that Jalen Suggs is in line for a significant payday before his fourth season,” Fischer wrote.
It comes as Fischer reported that Orlando, who has around $36 million in cap room, still holds hopes of landing a “veteran guard/wing who can space the floor Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, without commanding too much on-ball oxygen”.
The Magic had been linked to both Golden State’s Klay Thompson and Sacramento’s Malik Monk, although the latter has since extended with the Kings.
Caldwell-Pope, who was mentioned earlier, fits the mould of the kind of player the Magic may be after.
The 76ers star joined ESPN’s “NBA Countdown” show before the Mavericks’ 122-84 Game 4 win over the Celtics, staving elimination and cutting Boston’s series advantage to 3-1.
Clippers wing Paul George was also on the ESPN panel, and Embiid seemingly made his intention to woo him to Philadelphia known.

“Hopefully this offseason we find a way to get better and add some pieces,” Embiid said on the broadcast before looking over at George and smiling.
George, who has played the last five seasons with the Clippers, has a player option for next year.
He can become a free agent if he opts out.
The Clippers, largely without Kawhi Leonard, were eliminated by the Mavericks in six games in the first round of the playoffs.
George, a nine-time All-Star, averaged 22.6 points per game in the regular season and 19.5 points in that first-round series loss.
Embiid, playing through a knee injury and Bell’s palsy, and the 76ers were eliminated in six games by the Knicks in the first round.
‘That is just NASTY from Dante Exum!’ | 00:30
He was asked how he felt watching the Celtics on the cusp of winning a title.
“I can’t stand them,” Embiid said. “I hate Boston. Great city, great fans. Obviously, they have some great players. But it hurts me a lot.”

NBA insider Bobby Marks has floated a hypothetical trade for Australian Josh Giddey as the Oklahoma City guard faces an uncertain future heading into the offseason.
Marks, who spent 20 years working in the NBA and currently works as ESPN’s Front Office Insider, suggested a deal with the Utah Jazz — one of the more logical suitors for Giddey.
Although there were no players outside of Giddey involved in Marks’ hypothetical trade.
Instead, his trade saw Giddey sent to Utah in exchange for the Jazz’s 10th pick in this year’s draft and their 2025 first round-pick, via the Minnesota Timberwolves, which is top-14 protected.

The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie discussed Giddey’s potential trade value on the latest episode of his Game Theory Podcast, casting doubt over whether the Australian would net a future first.
“I am sure [Oklahoma City’s] goal will be to move him for a future first,” he said.
“But I don’t know how amenable teams will be … I think it will be a heavily protected future first if they were to move him.
“They are not extending him this summer, there is just no way.”
Vecenie suggested a deal with Washington, which would see Giddey link up with former Oklahoma City executive and now Wizards general manager Will Dawkins, in exchange for the Wizards’ No. 26 pick and a future second-rounder.
Giddey, who was benched for the first time in his career and generally saw limited minutes in the series against Dallas, is eligible for a rookie-scale contract extension.
The Thunder could see plenty of value keeping Giddey around given his performance the series prior against the Pelicans, while the 21-year-old obviously offers OKC a great contingency plan should either Shai Gilgeous-Alexander or Jalen Williams go down.
But Gilgeous-Alexander is set for a supermax extension in the 2025 offseason while Williams and Chet Holmgren will soon be eligible for rookie extensions of their own.
In other news, the Thunder may not be able to pay what Giddey’s management is after, although there is no concrete reporting at this stage as to what that figure may be.

SIXERS’ BIGGEST THREAT IN FREE AGENCY BID FOR PAUL GEORGE
Elsewhere, while Philadelphia has been heavily linked to Paul George ahead of free agency this summer, it seems like they have some serious competition in the Eastern Conference.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported on his Substack that Orlando “continues to be mentioned by various league observers as a natural suitor” for not only George but also Klay Thompson.
The Los Angeles Clippers are keen to re-sign George in free agency but Stein wrote that they have “made it clear by letting negotiations drag out to this point that they want to do it at their price”.
The Sixers are definitely a threat given they have nearly $65 million in cap space this offseason, which is more than enough to absorb George’s $49.4 million max salary next year.
The Magic, meanwhile, are in a similar situation where they should have around $55 million in cap space — again, enough to take on George should the Clippers not give him what he wants.

BRONNY NO LONGER A GUARANTEED TICKET TO LANDING LEBRON
It looks like Bronny James won’t be making a Lakers debut just yet.
Earlier this month, his dad, Los Angeles star LeBron James, said that playing together was “not a priority” after he had previously stated an interest in doing so.
According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on a recent episode of The Woj Pod that NBA teams no longer see Bronny as a ticket to securing LeBron.
Wojnarowski then shared that the Lakers were no longer considering Bronny as their first-round pick.
“The Lakers, to my understanding, they’re not considering Bronny James at No. 17,” Wojnarowski said.
“There’s no reason to take him at 17. If you wanted to take him earlier than 55, you could move up some places, but you are just giving away value.”
Where will Bronny land? (Photo by David Becker/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images
Bronny is coming off a less-than-stand-out first season at USC after his freshman year was delayed due to heart surgery after suffering cardiac arrest during a USC practice over the summer.
He averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 25 games for the Trojans, making six starts.
LeBron has spoken of the possibility of playing with his son for quite some time, but Wojnarowski said in early May that the family’s new goal is to find the young James the right developmental program.
Bronny could still go back to college, as he retained his eligibility — and entered the transfer portal — when he declared for the NBA draft.
ESPN recently predicted the younger James will get picked by the Warriors at No. 52 overall in a mock draft.

“That’s the priority for them as a family. What’s best for Bronny James? If it ends up them together, that would be great, but I don’t get a sense it’s playing much of any role in LeBron James’ decision on next season,” Wojnarowski said on ESPN’s “NBA Today” last month.
LeBron still has the chance to opt out of his deal with the Lakers and has not shared definitive plans for what he plans to do next.
“I’ve seen, heard a lot of reports about my future. I said it last night and I’ll say it again,” James posted on X at the end of April.
“I do not know yet as I’m only thinking about spending time with my family & friends! When I know after speaking with the fam, my counsel as well as my representation about it then you guys will know.”
Seven teams still remain in the hunt for the Larry O’Brien Trophy but for the other nine that have been eliminated from the NBA playoffs, attention has turned to the summer.
And for a few teams in particular, this offseason comes with big decisions to make with a free agency class that could be headlined by LeBron James and Paul George, among others.
With that in mind, foxsports.com.au breaks down a few of the more intriguing storylines to follow this summer.

1. SIXERS EXPECTED TO TAKE A SWING
Sixers team president Daryl Morey was not subtle in his exit interview. In fact, not only did he make it clear this would be a “big” offseason but he also specifically said the team’s “biggest need” was a “wing who can play and deliver at a high level in the playoffs”.
Of course, that is the case for most teams in the league these days, especially ones who may be a 3-and-D wing away from making the leap to genuine contender status.
But Philadelphia is in a strong position to compete with any rival offers that may come for the kind of player Morey is describing, having decided to largely stand pat at this season’s trade deadline.
Outside of adding Buddy Hield, the Sixers decided against taking a big swing and now head into the summer with a projected $60 million in space and five first-round picks available to be traded.
That is why Morey is right in saying this is a “big” offseason in Philadelphia. Add in the fact the 76ers didn’t even make it out of the first round of the playoffs and the growing injury concerns with Joel Embiid, and the clock is well and truly ticking.
There could be big changes at Philadelphia. (Photo by Tim Nwachukwu/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images
Now, Tyrese Maxey’s rapid rise to stardom helps the 76ers stay in the hunt both now and into the future, although he is one of the more notable Philadelphia players entering free agency.
Maxey will be a restricted free agent and is eligible for a max contract extension, which he no doubt will get, while Hield, Tobias Harris, Kyle Lowry, Kelly Oubre Jr., Nicolas Batum and Cameron Payne are unrestricted free agents.
Morey only guaranteed that coach Nick Nurse, Embiid, Maxey, Paul Reed and Ricky Council IV would be back next summer, declaring the team will “have continuity with our stars and our head coach but we’re going to have a lot of changes this season”.
“We’re focused on Joel and Tyrese and we’re focused on now,” he added.
“This offseason is a big one. I owe it to the fans, to ownership, to everybody, to get this team in a place where we’re competing for championships. We obviously didn’t achieve it this year.”
So, what does that mean for the team’s free agents and who Philadelphia could add either in free agency or via trade?
Kelly Oubre Jr. was a key contributor. Tim Nwachukwu/Getty Images/AFPSource: AFP
Well, Morey said both Lowry and Payne “really added to the team” while he referenced Oubre Jr. as the kind of around-the-margins addition that any title contender needs.
“I like having the challenge [of] finding the guys that are overlooked — the Kelly Oubres of the world,” he said.
Oubre Jr. certainly out-kicked his veteran’s minimum deal, averaging 15.4 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists, but will obviously come at more of a cost to keep next season.
As for Hield, Morey said the trade “didn’t quite work as well” as the team had hoped, seemingly signalling the swingman may be headed elsewhere, although the 76ers GM also took ownership on his end for Hield’s struggles and also pointed to the fact he didn’t play much with Embiid.
Either way, from Morey’s comments at his exit interview, it sounds like the 76ers are more interested in finding a third star to put next to Embiid and Maxey before figuring out the rest later.
The Athletic’s Shams Charania backed that up while speaking on FanDuelTV’s ‘Run It Back’ program, reporting the Sixers plan to go “big-game hunting” this summer.
Paul George is the one named that has been heavily linked to Philadelphia, with NBA insider Marc Stein reporting on the #thisleague UNCUT podcast that the 76ers are “seen as the foremost threat” to the Clippers keeping the nine-time All-Star.
Paul George is a target. Harry How/Getty Images/AFPSource: AFP
“The Orlando Magic also have to be in that conversation, but it’s the 76ers who have the Clippers most concerned here, and I’m talking about long-term concerns,” he added.
Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, meanwhile, even wrote in late March that the Sixers’ plan to sign George was “the NBA’s worst-kept secret.”
That is consistent with reporting from ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, who said on ‘Get Up’ that while Jimmy Butler and Brandon Ingram are potential trade targets, George is “the player at the top of their list”.
2. CHANGES COMING AT MIAMI?
Speaking of Butler, could he be on the move after Miami failed to back up its stunning run to the NBA Finals in the 2022-23 season?
There are at least some murmurs a seismic summer could be on the horizon for the Heat, which feasibly would include moving on from the Eastern Conference Finals MVP.
ESPN’s Zach Lowe said on a recent episode of his podcast to “not take your eyes off” Miami as attention instead turns to what Philadelphia and both Los Angeles teams could do this offseason.
“The Heat are always active and this is a pivot point for the Jimmy Butler era,” Lowe said.
“… It would not surprise me if there were some Jimmy Butler trade rumblings this offseason, if those extension talks don’t go well.”
The Ringer’s Howard Beck, meanwhile, added that “there has been speculation around the league that this relationship has run its course and this is the summer where they pivot”.
Meanwhile, The Athletic’s David Aldridge wrote in a recent column that there are “subtle signs” that the Butler era in Miami “could be nearing a tipping point”.
Could there be changes in Miami? Tim Nwachukwu/Getty Images/AFPSource: AFP
All of this external noise comes in the wake of a report from The Miami Herald which claims Butler wants a max two-year extension worth around $113 million from the Heat this offseason, despite already being contracted to the team next season with a $52.4 million player option for 2025-26.
The extension Butler is after would, according to the report, replace his 25-26 player option.
That means that, along with the $48.8 million salary Butler is guaranteed next season, he would be looking at a three-year, $161.7 million deal.
Committing to that would be committing to this version of the Heat being good enough to contend for a title over the next three years, with Bam Adebayo also eligible to sign an extension this offseason.
The Athletic’s front office insider John Hollinger wrote of Butler earlier in the month that “between his declining play this season and the constant absences, there are increasingly loud whispers that his future might not be in Miami”.
Team president Pat Riley didn’t exactly go out of his way to put an end to those whispers at his exit interview either when asked about the possibility of extending Butler.
“We don’t have to do that for a year. We have not discussed that internally right now, but we have to look at making that kind of commitment,” Riley told reporters.
Butler reportedly wants an extension. (Photo by Chris ARJOON / AFP)Source: AFP
Riley had plenty of good things to say about Butler, describing him as an “incredible player”, but he also placed plenty of emphasis on the fact he wasn’t available when Miami needed him most.
“That’s a big decision on our part to commit those kinds of resources unless you have somebody who’s going to be there and available every single night,” Riley added.
“That’s the truth.”
In terms of which teams could consider trading for Butler, the 76ers and Lakers jump out as leading contenders given both teams are expected to go star-chasing this summer.
3. PAUL GEORGE SET FOR FREE AGENCY
The Clippers are getting ready to move into a new arena next season. Will it also be out with the old and in with the new when it comes to the roster?
Well, Los Angeles is contractually locked in to the Kawhi Leonard experience after signing him to a three-year, $153 million contract extension earlier this year.
But Paul George and James Harden could both hit free agency this summer, with the former weighing up whether he exercises his $48.7 million player option for next season.
As for Harden, he is an unrestricted free agent.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski wrote the Clippers’ goal is to re-sign both and Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype reported Harden “ideally wants to re-sign”.
There hasn’t been too much more concrete reporting, however, as for whether there is much of a market for Harden, should he not come to an agreement with the Clippers.
As for George, however, there are already the links to the 76ers and the Magic while there is no doubting a few other teams may pop up as potential suitors depending how the rest of the playoffs shake out.
Doncic leads Dallas to win over Thunder | 01:06
That gives George quite a bit of leverage and, in turn, leaves the Clippers with a big decision to make given re-signing both the 34-year-old and Harden will limit any further roster-building under the NBA’s new CBA, should they exceed the second apron.
Mindful of that reality, The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported on FanDuelTV’s ‘Run It Back’ that the Clippers have “made multiple contract offers below the max”.
“They have not been able to reach a deal, so they’re going to keep trying. We’ll see if he tests free agency,” added Charania.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported on ‘Get Up’ last week that he suspects George is “likely headed for free agency” given the 76ers are a team who have the cap space to fit his max salary next year.
“I suspect, at the end of the day,” Windhorst added, “if the Clippers actually believe they would lose Paul George, if they don’t give him max, I think they pay up”.
4. BIG DECISIONS FOR THE LAKERS
All signs point towards the Lakers doing whatever it takes to have LeBron James back next season as he decides whether to take up his player option or hit free agency.
But what exactly does James want at this point of his career?
If it is winning another title, would that be in Los Angeles? Or, having already won a championship with the Lakers, does James look at the final years of his career differently?
Of course, winning is always going to be a driving force for the ultra-competitive James, but there is also the added complication of his desire to play with son Bronny James at some point.
James clarified in an interview last year with ESPN that it was more about sharing the floor with his son.
“Either in the same uniform or a matchup against him,” James said at the time.
Either way, it is a whole lot of question marks and not many answers or hints towards where James could be leaning and obviously for a player of his standing, he holds all the cards.
Understanding of that reality, it seems like the Lakers are all ears as to what James may want to exercise his player option for next season.
LeBron James has a big decision to make. (Photo by Matthew Stockman/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images
“The Lakers intend to have LeBron James come back on any term that he wants to,” McMenamin said on The Rich Eisen Show last week.
“Whether that be a one-year deal, two-year deal, three-year deal, whatever. They’d love to continue to have LeBron James in the purple and gold until he calls it quits, whenever that may be.”
There is less uncertainty around guard D’Angelo Russell, who is expected to opt out of his contract and enter NBA free agency.
Losing Russell would only further incentivise the Lakers to go shopping for a third star to pair alongside James and Anthony Davis, having fallen well short in their bid to contest for the title this season.
A comprehensive report from The Athletic earlier in the month claimed the Lakers are “expected to be aggressive in the market”, with Hawks superstar Trae Young “one of many names that is expected to be discussed”.
Although a trade for Young — or any star player in the league — could mean parting ways with valuable depth pieces and repeating the same mistake the Lakers made in the Russell Westbrook deal.
Of course, that in itself is a simplistic way of looking at things given it ultimately depends on who the player is.
But nonetheless, it speaks to an interesting team-building debate for the Lakers front office this summer.

5. DONOVAN MITCHELL WATCH
Has Donovan Mitchell played his last game for the Cavaliers?
The All-Star guard missed the last two games of Cleveland’s Eastern Conference semifinals series against Boston with a calf injury and now an intriguing summer awaits, with Mitchell eligible to sign a four-year extension worth around $208.5 million.
If Mitchell doesn’t want to sign that extension though, NBA insider Marc Stein reported on his Substack that Cleveland would “have little alternative but to explore the trade market” for him before next season.
That is because otherwise they would risk losing him as a free agent in 2025. Mitchell is currently contracted for next season and has a $37 million player option for 2025-26.
ESPN insider Brian Windhorst said on ‘Get Up’ that “multiple teams would love to make a huge offer” to Cleveland if Mitchell opts against extending with the team.
“There are a number of teams that have their offers ready,” added Windhorst, mentioning the Nets, Lakers and Heat as three teams he expects to be “at the top of the list” while pouring cold water on the idea that the Knicks could make a move for him.
If Mitchell does extend with Cleveland it doesn’t mean there won’t be changes elsewhere though, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, who reported that it could cost the Cavs star teammate Darius Garland.
Donovan Mitchell’s future will be a talking point. Maddie Meyer/Getty Images/AFPSource: AFP
“Should Mitchell decide to stay long term,” Charania wrote, “sources briefed on the matter say Garland’s representation, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, would have a conversation with Cavs officials on potentially finding a new home for the one-time All-Star”.
That, of course, comes in the background of questions being asked of the star duo’s fit after Garland went from averaging 21.7 points, 8.6 assists and 3.3 rebounds on his way to All-Star honours in 2021-22 to taking a backseat on Mitchell’s arrival.
Charania also cast doubt over coach J.B. Bickerstaff’s future at the franchise should Mitchell extend, writing “multiple league sources have said, for months, that Mitchell did not have great confidence in Bickerstaff, and he was not alone”.
A report from Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor also claimed Mitchell had “at times grew frustrated with some teammates’ lack of maturity, focus, playoff-level readiness and a willingness to listen”, which prompted a direct response from the Cavaliers superstar himself.
6. PELICANS PART WAYS WITH INGRAM?
It looks like one of the bigger names that will be on the trade market this summer is Brandon Ingram, who is entering the final year of his contract next season at $36 million.
Ingram is eligible for a four-year contract extension this summer worth up to $208 million but it seems highly unlikely he will get that at this point given injury concerns and the fact that even when healthy he hasn’t necessarily performed at that high a level at a consistent basis.
Then you also add in the fact Zion Williamson and C.J. McCollum are on expensive long-term contracts while the Pelicans also already have a much younger, cheaper alternative in Trey Murphy II.
All of that is to say a max extension a long shot, a trade seems the best bet.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported on his Substack that there is a “growing belief leaguewide that Pelicans will aggressively explore the trade market” for Ingram.
“League sources say that Ingram’s exit is increasingly viewed by various league observers as an inevitability rather than possibility,” Stein added.
Pelicans beat writer Christian Clark, meanwhile, reported if an extension can’t be agreed to, the Pelicans will “likely” trade him.
Brandon Ingram’s future in New Orleans is up in the air. Sarah Stier/Getty Images/AFPSource: AFP
The report also claimed that New Orleans is “open to adding more years onto Ingram’s contract but not at his full maximum amount”, according to league sources.
Pelicans front office head David Griffin suggested in his exit interview that changes to the roster could be on the cards after the team was swept by Oklahoma City.
“In the past, we’ve always erred on the side of continuity, and our takeaway has always been let’s see this group healthy. I think we’ve seen it enough,” Griffin said.
“I think we saw it for segments of time well enough to understand that we’ve got a lot of work to do. Because it’s a historically good Western Conference, there are teams that didn’t make the playoffs that are going to get radically better this offseason.
“We need to do the same. I think you’ll see a real sense of urgency from all of us to do that.”
Only adding to the speculation Ingram could be traded is a claim from The Athletic’s Shams Charania that the Pelicans forward and coach Willie Green had a “minor exchange” in the locker room during the team’s Game 2 loss to the Thunder.
Charania reported that Ingram essentially told Green “he wanted the ball and wanted the coach to help him get the ball”.
“Given how quiet Brandon Ingram is in nature, that direct approach with Green and how he spoke up towards the head coach was a seminal moment in the locker room,” Charania said on Stadium’s Inside the Association.
“Something that did have a lasting impact since the end of the season and that relationship is something to keep an eye on right now going into a very important summer for Ingram and the Pelicans.”
The Athletic’s Sam Amick reported in April that Green has “multiple years remaining on a [contract] extension that had not been previously reported”, so if there is any lingering tension surrounding Ingram’s usage it is likely he would be the one moving on.
7. WHAT DO THE HAWKS DO?
Already, Atlanta shaped as one of the teams to watch this summer with it looking increasingly likely they would trade either Trae Young or Dejounte Murray this offseason.
Now that is even more true after the Hawks overcame long odds to win the first overall pick in the upcoming draft.
It only gives the Hawks even more trade capital to take a big swing this summer, although this year’s class is nowhere near as top-heavy which makes the pick a lot less valuable than it would usually be.
Trae Young could be traded. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images
Still, it’s a nice thing to have — especially given the Hawks had just a three per cent chance to win the pick in the first place, having moved up nine spots in the draft lottery to draw it.
The San Antonio Spurs have been often floated as one potential trade partner if the Hawks decide to move on from Young given he would be an ideal pick-and-roll partner for the 7-foot-4 sensation Victor Wembanyama.
However, Jake Fishcher of Yahoo Sports cast doubt over whether that would eventuate, reporting “multiple league figures with knowledge of the situation” claim Spurs have “expressed little interest in obtaining Young to date”.
Fischer still reported that there is a “growing belief among rival teams” that Young will be put on the trade block this summer, with the Lakers expected to show interest in him.
