5 IPL teams that can target Mitchell Starc in the 2024 auction

The Indian Premier League (IPL) stands as the grandest cricketing platform on the global stage, attracting the sport’s biggest stars year after year. The latest entrant in this spotlight is none other than Mitchell Starc, the spearhead of Australia‘s fast-bowling arsenal. Starc has officially declared his intentions to participate in the IPL 2024 auction, with a clear goal in mind – gearing up for the T20 World Cup scheduled for the same year, to be hosted in the West Indies and the USA. This development promises to elevate the next IPL season to new heights, with multiple franchises vying for the prized signature of this left-arm pace sensation.

Here are the five IPL teams that could potentially engage in a  bidding war to secure Starc’s services in the IPL 2024 auction:

    1) Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB):

Starc boasts prior experience with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), featuring in consecutive seasons as a devastating weapon in Virat Kohli‘s arsenal. Impressively, Starc maintained a frugal economy rate of just 7.17 across 27 IPL matches, even in the challenging environs of the Chinnaswamy Stadium. IPL 2023 witnessed RCB grappling with bowling inconsistencies and a deficiency of quality options. With Starc’s proven abilities and past association with the franchise, a reunion with RCB could be on the cards, offering them the firepower they crave in their bowling department.

    2) Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH):

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) endured a woeful IPL 2023 campaign, languishing at the bottom of the group-stage standings. Their pace department struggled, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar nearing the twilight of his career. Emerging talents like Fazalhaq Farooqi, Marco Jansen and Umran Malik are still in the process of honing their skills. The introduction of Starc, with his wealth of experience and formidable bowling prowess, could revitalize SRH’s quest for resurgence.

    3) Lucknow Super Giants (LSG):

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), one of the IPL’s freshest entrants in 2022, instantly captured hearts with impactful performances. However, their journeys both seasons ended at the top four, partly owing to an inadequacy in their bowling arsenal. Although Mark Wood displayed sparks of brilliance, injuries hampered his full potential. Young Indian bowlers such as Yudhveer Singh and Mohsin Khan, though promising, lack the seasoned touch. Starc’s acquisition could provide the missing piece to LSG’s puzzle.

    4) Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR):

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) had initially secured Starc’s services back in 2018, although his injury woes led to his withdrawal. Recent IPL seasons have exposed KKR’s vulnerability due to the absence of a reliable frontline pacer. Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson have faced challenges in terms of consistency and control. While Pat Cummins contributed with the bat, his bowling often proved expensive. Starc’s addition could instill the much-needed stability and depth to KKR’s pace attack.

    5) Punjab Kings (PKBS):

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) have consistently defied expectations in the IPL, given their substantial financial resources and formidable squad. However, clinching the coveted title have remained elusive. Starc, renowned for his expertise as an experienced left-arm pacer, excelling in high-pressure situations, could be the catalyst to propel a team notorious for snatching defeat from victory’s grasp.

‘Sometimes the batting was clicking, sometimes the bowling’ – Shikhar Dhawan analyses Punjab Kings’ IPL 2023 season

After a four-wicket defeat at the hands of Rajasthan Royals in their final league game of the ongoing IPL 2023, Punjab Kings bowed out of the tournament as they failed to qualify for the playoffs and finished the season in a disappointing manner.

Analysing their performance in the 16th edition of the tournament, skipper Shikhar Dhawan mentioned that they did well in patches as sometimes, the batters did well while sometimes the bowlers were the ones stepping up. He also added that since it’s a young group, everyone got to learn a lot this season, and stated that the team could have done well in certain areas, including fielding, which was very poor throughout the course of the season.

“The bowling was good (in patches), but the fielding wasn’t great, the dropped catches cost us the game. We could have done better in all the areas I think. Sometimes the batting was clicking, and sometimes the bowling was clicking, we couldn’t put up those performances together. It’s a young group, so we have learned a lot of things this season,” Dhawan said in the post-match presentation.

Dhawan analyses their defeat against Rajasthan Royals

Batting first, the home side suffered a few early blows but the 64-run partnership between Sam Curran and Jitesh Sharma brought PBKS back to the game. The England international eventually smashed 49* runs off 31 deliveries while the stumper-batter hit 44 runs off 28 deliveries. Towards the fag end of the innings, Shahrukh Khan wreaked havoc, scoring 41* runs off 23 deliveries as PBKS posted 187 runs in the first innings. Talking about that, Dhawan lauded the players and also stated that the team could have scored 200 on this wicket.

“We lost too many wickets in the powerplay and that put us on the back foot, but (Sam) Curran, Jitesh (Sharma), and Shahrukh (Khan) got us back in the game. I feel 200 should have been a good total on this pitch,” Dhawan added after the match.

IPL 2023: Funniest Memes from PBKS vs RR Match

The 66th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 featured a clash between the Shikhar Dhawan-led Punjab Kings and the inaugural champions Rajasthan Royals at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Friday, May 19.

Batting first, Punjab Kings’ top-order failed to make an impact on the game as Prabhsimran Singh was sent back to the pavilion for just two runs in the first over of the match. Furthermore, skipper Shikhar Dhawan fell prey to Adam Zampa and was dismissed for just 17 runs.

Atharva Taide and Liam Livingstone also only managed to amass 28 runs collectively. As the side seemed to crumble under pressure, Jitesh Sharma, Sam Curran, and Shahrukh Khan played brilliant knocks to stabilise the innings for the Shikhar Dhawan-led side.

Curran scored 49* runs in 31 balls, Jitesh Sharma amassed 44 runs in 28 deliveries, and Shahrukh played an unbeaten knock of 41* runs in 23 deliveries. Their knocks helped Punjab post 187 runs on the board in the first innings.

Navdeep Saini was the highest wicket-taker for Rajasthan with three wickets to his name; however, conceded 40 runs in the four overs. Furthermore, Trent Boult and Adam Zampa took one wicket each.

Coming in to chase the target down, Rajasthan Royals were met with the early dismissal of star batter Jos Buttler, who was sent packing for a duck. Man-in-form Yashasvi Jaiswal delivered yet again. The 21-year-old scored yet another half-century, amassing 50 runs in 36 deliveries. With Sanju Samson’s poor showing, it was Devdutt Padikkal who rose to the occasion and scored 51 runs in 30 deliveries.

Furthermore, Shimron Hetmyer scored 46 runs in 28 deliveries, as Rajasthan won the game by four wickets in the last over with Dhruv Jurel’s six. Kagiso Rabada was the highest wicket-taker for Punjab, with two wickets to his name. Sam Curran, Arshdeep Singh, Nathan Ellis, and Rahul Chahar took one wicket each as well.

  • IPL 2023: Here’s how Punjab Kings (PBKS) can still qualify for the playoffs

IPL 2023: Here’s how Punjab Kings (PBKS) can still qualify for the playoffs

Punjab Kings will take on Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023 on Wednesday, May 17, at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala. The two teams recently faced off against each other in their respective last games, where Punjab emerged victorious by 31 runs. The upcoming game is extremely important for Punjab, who are still in contention to qualify for the playoffs.

The Shikhar Dhawan-led side is currently ranked eighth on the IPL points table with six wins from 12 matches having 12 points to their name. With two games remaining in the tournament against DC and RR, Punjab have a great chance to qualify for the playoffs by winning both of their remaining fixtures.

However, one thing that could dent their chances of finishing in the top four is their poor net run rate of -0.268. PBKS face a strong threat from RCB, who are ranked in the fifth spot on the points table, having 12 points to their name as well with six wins from 12 games. RCB have a good positive net run rate of +0.166 which makes their task of qualifying for the playoffs easier if they manage to win both of their remaining games.

Hence, in order to seal a spot in the playoffs for Punjab, they will have to win both of their remaining fixtures by big margins and get ahead of RCB in the net run rate. If they fail to bring their net run rate into positive, they will have to hope that either RCB, LSG, CSK and MI lose one of their remaining fixtures.

    Will Delhi spoil Punjab’s party?

Punjab cannot afford to lose one more game in the league stage which will almost knock them out of the competition due to their poor net run rate.

On the other hand, Delhi are already knocked out of the competition with just four wins from 12 matches, having eight points to their name. The David Warner-led side will be looking to salvage some pride by winning their last two fixtures and spoiling Punjab’s party in the upcoming game.

  • WATCH: SRH owner Kavya Maran gets angry over cameraman during the match against PBKS – IPL 2023

WATCH: SRH owner Kavya Maran gets angry over cameraman during the match against PBKS – IPL 2023

Sunrisers Hyderabad‘s owner Kavya Maran visiting the stadium to support her team is a common sight, and she’s often discussed on social media for her cute looks during the match. Although Kavya has been the focus of the camera for a while now, she was seen a bit irritated with the cameraman on Sunday (April 9) amidst her team’s match against Punjab Kings (PBKS).

SRH faced PBKS in the 14th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium and emerged victorious in the contest by eight wickets. Notably, it was the Punjab-based side’s first defeat in the season.

Asked to bat first, PBKS got off to a shaky start and managed to score only 143/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Shikhar Dhawan played a lone hand for his side and scored a brilliant 99 off just 66 balls, including twelve fours and five sixes. Except for skipper Dhawan, none of the other batters from the PBKS side could get going, and the team had to settle for an average total. However, the 37-year-old left-handed batter remained unbeaten for Punjab, saving his team from getting bundled out. Meanwhile, Mayank Markande was the pick of the bowlers for SRH, claiming four wickets for just 15 runs in his quota of four overs.

SRH owner Kavya was frustrated to see Dhawan standing rock-solid on one end, and the cameraman became the victim of her anger. After being shown on the big screen, she was captured telling the camera to go away by saying, “Hatt rey”. The video of Kavya’s reaction soon went viral on the internet.

    Here’s the video:

Coming back to the match, SRH chased down the target comfortably for the loss of just two wickets in 17.1 overs. Rahul Tripathi was the star of the show for the Hyderabad-based team as he smashed blistering 74 off just 48 balls. Rahul hammered ten fours and three sixes during his knock and was well supported by his captain Aiden Markram who scored a crucial 37 off 21 balls. The duo finished unbeaten in the game and ensured their team easily reached the target.

On the other hand, Arshdeep Singh and Rahul Chahar picked up a wicket each for PBKS, but they were unable to stop the Hyderabad batters from scoring freely.

IPL 2023: 3 players who returned to their former franchises

The IPL 2023 auction witnessed many teams trying to fill their gaps from the last edition. Most of them succeeded in their attempt, while others missed the opportunity to find the missing piece of the puzzle. Furthermore, few franchises targeted player whom they released ahead of the auction in their bid to secure their services at a lower price.

Some of the teams took active interest in securing the services of the players who represented them in the past or could not be a part of the 2022 season. It was also due to the respective players’ form and team combinations, which might help them to get favourable results in the forthcoming edition.

Here are three players who returned to former franchises:

    1. Sam Curran

One of the finest all-rounders in white-ball cricket, Sam Curran created history in the IPL 2023 auction as he emerged as the costliest buy in the tournament history. Curran’s former franchise Punjab Kings shelled out INR 18.5 crore to bring back the talented Englishman to the squad. The 24-year-old represented Punjab Kings in the 2019 season, and then played for CSK in 2020 and 2021.

One of the reasons for such a massive bid for Curran was his performance in the T20 World Cup 2022, where he bagged 13 wickets and was named the Player of the Tournament, helping England lift the title.

In nine games for PBKS, Curran bagged 10 wickets and scored 95 runs. After releasing Odean Smith ahead of the upcoming season, PBKS certainly needed a fast-bowling all-rounder and Curran is just the perfect fit for the role.

  • IPL 2023: 5 franchises that might target Jason Holder at auction

IPL 2023: 5 franchises that might target Jason Holder at auction

Get every cricket updates! Follow us on

Jason Holder has been a proven performer in the T20 circuit. The Barbados-born has featured in 200 matches in the shortest format and picked up 197 wickets at an economy of 7.86. On the batting front, he has scored 1758 runs at a strike rate of 126.38. The 31-year-old has also displayed his all-round prowess in the international arena. He has bagged 51 wickets in 49 T20Is at an economy of 8.17 and scored 385 runs at a strike rate of 120.68.

Lucknow Super Giants went all guns blazing to sign the West Indies all-rounder at the 2022 mega auction and eventually grabbed him for INR 8.75 crore. Holder played 12 games for Lucknow and took 14 wickets at an economy of 9.42. On the batting front, he scored 58 runs at a strike rate of 131.82.

Given the ace all-rounder was not able to perform as per his lofty standards, Lucknow released him from their squad. So, Holder will go under the hammer at the IPL 2023 auction. He brings balance to the side due to his all-round prowess and many franchises could be eager to pick him at the upcoming marquee event.

Here are five franchises that might target Jason Holder at auction:

    5. Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings assembled a power-packed side for the 2022 season, comprising many match-winners of the T20 arena. However, they did not pick many multi-faceted players for their team. PBKS signed Odean Smith to fill the all-round void in the team but the West Indies all-rounder was not able to deliver the goods, be it with the ball or bat. The 26-year-old could manage only 51 runs in six games and leaked runs at an alarming rate of 11.87.

Punjab had invested a staggering sum of INR 6 crore at the 2022 mega auction for Odean and would have expected more from him. Therefore, the team management parted ways with the Jamaica-born ahead of the IPL 2023 player auction. Presently PBKS does not have a gun all-rounder in their team. Though they have stuck with Rishi Dhawan to add depth to the side, the 32-year-old was awful with the bat last season scoring 37 runs at a strike rate of 92.50.

Therefore, it is highly likely that PBKS would go shopping for top-drawer all-rounders at the upcoming player auction and the think tank could look at Holder, who has been a consistent performer in the lucrative T20 tournament. The West Indies all-rounder has bagged 49 wickets in 38 matches and scored 247 runs at a strike rate of 124.12. So, he could be the answer to Punjab’s all-round woes going ahead. Thus, Shikhar Dhawan & co. might try to pick Holder at the auction.
