Beckham’s Miami announce Messi deal as 18,000 fans set to watch unveiling

Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has signed a contract through the 2025 season with Inter Miami, the Major League Soccer team announced on Saturday.

The 36-year-old striker, who sparked Argentina to a World Cup title last year in Qatar, is set to be unveiled by the team in a Sunday ceremony and expected to join Inter Miami on the pitch by Friday.

“I’m very excited to start this next step in my career with Inter Miami and in the United States,” Messi said in a statement.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s arrival in Miami from Paris Saint-Germain has already caused a sensation and is expected to spark greater interest in the game and MLS across the United States.

It’s also hoped the long-time Barcelona talisman can revive the fortunes of a Miami squad at the bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference at 5-13 with three drawn.

“This is a fantastic opportunity and together we will continue to build this beautiful project,” Messi said. “The idea is to work together to achieve the objectives we set and I’m very eager to start helping here in my new home.”

Messi’s debut match is planned for Friday (21st) when Inter Miami will host Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup, a revamped competition between MLS and Mexican league squads.

It’s the biggest boost for MLS since English star David Beckham, now a co-owner of Inter Miami, joined the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007. He launched the MLS Miami squad in 2020 after years of trying to find a stadium site.

“Ten years ago, when I started my journey to build a new team in Miami, I said that I dreamt of bringing the greatest players in the world to this amazing city, players who shared the ambition I had when I joined LA Galaxy to help grow football in the USA and to build a legacy for the next generation in this sport that we love so much,” Beckham said in a statement.

    “Today that dream came true.

“I couldn’t be prouder that a player of Leo’s caliber is joining our club … The next phase of our adventure starts here and I can’t wait to see Leo take to the pitch.”

Inter Miami head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino has managed Messi in two separate prior stints — with FC Barcelona in the 2013-14 campaign, winning the 2013 Spanish SuperCup, and from 2014-2016 with the Argentine national team.

Maestro Messi captained the Albiceleste to victory at the 2021 Copa America as well as the Qatar World Cup and has records of 103 goals and 175 appearances for Argentina.

“We’re overjoyed that the greatest player in the world chose Inter Miami and Major League Soccer,” MLS commissioner Don Garber said.

“His decision is a testament to the momentum and energy behind our league and our sport in North America.”

Messi is set for a glitzy arrival ceremony on Sunday at “The Unveil” with 18,000 expected to watch his first public event with his new club, followed by his first training session on Tuesday.

“We made a promise to build an ambitious club that would attract the world’s elite players,” Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas said.

“A heartfelt thank you to our fans that never stopped believing. Together we will continue to turn dreams into reality.” With iconic Messi expected to be joined by Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets, the hope is Inter Miami can rise from a doormat to a champion.

“Lionel Messi is an incomparable talent,” said Inter Miami sporting director Chris Henderson. “What he brings on and off the field will elevate everyone around him.”

    His legend has few rivals.

Messi is a two-time World Cup Golden Ball winner, a three-time UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Award winner who also has six La Liga Best Player titles.

Messi is a four-time UEFA Champions League winner, an Olympic gold medal winner, has played on 10 La Liga champions, two Ligue 1 champions and taken seven Copa del Rey titles.

He played for Barcelona from 2004-2021 before joining Paris Saint-Germain for two seasons, making 75 appearances across all competitions, tallying 32 goals and 35 assists.

Wild photo reveals Socceroos reality in Messi masterclass

    Bravo, sir.

A mystery, lonesome, random Aussie fan has been spotted somewhere in the fan frenzy that Lionel Messi caused in Beijing on Friday morning.

The Argentinian caused an early moment of mayhem in the grandstands when he scored just 81 seconds into his country’s friendly against the Socceroos.

One fan who would not have been enjoying the atmosphere as much was the brave man wearing an Aussie gold Socceroos shirt in amongst the 68,000 screaming Messi fans.

Now it’s time to give the fan the respect he is due for his efforts of giving the Socceroos some level of visible support inside the Workers’ Stadium in Beijing.

Countless photos of a random fan sitting in amongst the seas of blue and white seen around the stadium have surfaced in the wake of Argentina’ 2-0 victory.

Each photo should bring another degree of appreciation for the mystery fan.

Code Sports’ Adam Peacock seemed to sum it up when he wrote: “For the Beijing game, 68,000 tickets sold out in a minute. Roughly 67,785 of them wore Argentina No.10 shirts.”

Fortunately, spectators seemed far too busy on their phones to have any interest in paying attention to the outlying fan.

Even security guards were seen with their phones out trying to take the perfect photo as Messi took a corner at one point in the match.

The 35-year-old put on a show for them.

Messi set two new marks in the win, scoring the fastest goal of his career while also scoring in his seventh straight game for his country – which was also a personal record.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner curled in from the edge of the area following a turnover by the Socceroos.

Messi has now scored in every minute of a game at some point of his career, except for the opening minute.

Australia weathered the early storm and nearly equalised when attacker Mitchell Duke forced Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to tip a close-range shot onto the post.

Messi and fellow Argentina veteran Angel di Maria both drew saves from Australia stopper Mat Ryan at the start of the second half.

And the world champions eventually made their pressure count when German Pezzella headed in a cross to make it 2-0 in the 68th minute.

But even Messi’s goal paled in comparison to this exhibition of sublime skill as he danced his way through an embarrassed Socceroos midfield in the 79th minute.

England football great Gary Lineker described the dribbling as “filth”.

Messi is idolised in football-mad China, whose underperforming national team and struggling domestic league are chronic sources of disappointment.

Midway through the second half, a young-looking fan wearing an Argentina shirt invaded the pitch and briefly embraced Messi before being hauled away by security guards.

Thousands greeted the Argentina captain’s every touch with roars of anticipation that built to a crescendo when he put his team into their quick-fire lead.

Messi mania had gripped a sweltering Beijing for the sell-out friendly match in the Chinese capital.

All eyes were on Messi, arguably the greatest footballer of all time, who lifted the World Cup for the Albiceleste in December.

Thousands of Chinese fans braved temperatures of nearly 40C, gathering at Beijing’s newly renovated Workers’ Stadium several hours before the 8pm kick-off.

Many came clad in replica Argentina shirts emblazoned with Messi’s name and number 10, while others had daubed their faces with sky-blue and white paint or were excitedly clasping flags.

Security guards corralled hundreds of fans behind barriers outside the western gate to the ground, where the Argentina team coach was due to enter.

Forty-year-old lawyer Zhong Xiaoqing from eastern China’s Zhejiang province told AFP that Messi was his “perfect idol”.

“Messi is the greatest player of all time,” he said. “I was completely enamoured the first time I saw him play in 2005.

“He’s a model for me — my perfect idol.”

For 29-year-old HR worker Sun Bingxin from northern Shanxi province, the excitement had been overwhelming.

“I’ve been so pent up about it that I feel like I could cry with joy,” she told AFP before kick-off.

“Every football fan in China has wanted to be here tonight, so it’ll be a spectacular occasion.” Liu Rui, a 24-year-old student from Nanjing in eastern Jiangsu province, said being at the match was “really a dream come true”.

“In 40 years’ time, I can tell my grandchildren about this,” he told AFP.

Hundreds of flag-waving fans had been camped outside the team’s luxury hotel ever since they touched down on Saturday.

Crowds have lined heavily guarded streets hoping to catch a glimpse of the 35-year-old each time the team goes for training.

The man himself has kept a low profile, but that has done little to dampen enthusiasm.

One daring fan recounted his tale of spending the night inside the Four Seasons hotel in a bid to get a close encounter with Messi and his teammates.

“I first hid in the janitor’s closet, then went up to the team’s floor through the fire escape staircase,” the man, surnamed Lin, told AFP.

He was questioned by hotel security before being released.

Another fan, Li Weihua, said he had flown from his home city of Shenzhen in southern China, heading straight to the hotel.

He did not even have a ticket for the match at the 68,000-capacity Workers’ Stadium, which had quickly sold out.

“I just want to feel the environment,” said the 29-year-old, who had never been to Beijing before.

Huang Yongming, 17, from the northeastern city of Changchun, was more successful in getting a highly coveted ticket.

“I spent around 3000 yuan ($615) for a ticket,” Huang told AFP. “I know it’s expensive, but I thought that if I didn’t take the opportunity, I would regret it.”

Messi is set to join Inter Miami this summer, after two years at Paris Saint-Germain.

Thursday’s match was a re-run of the last-16 clash between Argentina and Australia at last year’s World Cup in Qatar.

On that occasion, Messi scored a goal and tormented the Socceroos’ defence as the Albiceleste won 2-1.

Argentina went on to win the World Cup for the first time in 36 years. The South Americans will round off their Asian tour on Monday when they play another friendly against Indonesia in Jakarta.

Arnie reveals rising stars set to start as Roos seek revenge against World Cup champs

Socceroos coach Graham Arnold wants to start a campaign to change the word “friendlies” to ”fixtures” when it comes to games like Thursday‘s against Argentina in China.

That’s because there will be nothing friendly about how his team “gets in the face” of the world champions, including superstar Lionel Messi, in what looms for some of the younger Socceroos as the biggest game of their careers.

A sold-out crowd of close to 70,000 is expected at the game in Beijing and the Socceroos have experienced the Messi effect in the lead-up, with hundreds of fans surrounding his hotel trying to catch a glimpse of the all-time great.

Arnold confirmed rising stars Jordan Bos and Aiden O’Neill, who weren’t part of the World Cup clash, would start and midfielder Keanu Baccus would get another shot at Messi too as the Australians look for revenge after a 2-1 loss to Argentina in the round of 16 in Qatar.

Arnold said the Socceroos would be “extremely aware” of 35-year-old megastar Messi but were confident the plans they used in Qatar could contain him this time.

“What we did at the World Cup, I felt that we did very, very well till about the 43rd minute (when he scored) and we’ll do the same again,” the Socceroos coach said from Beijing on Wednesday.

“It‘s not just about him … you can’t just focus on that one player, but obviously, be extremely aware of him when he when he is in possession. But as I said we’ll have a plan around him.”

The challenge of taking on the world champs has energy in the Socceroos’ camp “through the roof” and Arnold is hoping that translates to the full-on, dynamic play his team will need to keep Argentina under control.

“The focus needs to be on our own performance, and if there’s one thing that we could do better than what we did in the last was in possession,” he said.

“Keeping possession and making sure that we’re making them do some running and some chasing and we’ll be in their faces for 90 minutes defensively.”

Arnold conceded it would be up to several of the younger Socceroos to handle the occasion, but the fact so many are heading straight to Europe after the clash was testament to their ability.

“They are flying to Europe too because the European clubs have identified Australian talent,” he said.

“You come in to these types of occasions and see how platers handle it. They feel and they believe that they belong on this stage.

“The energy is through the roof and take that energy onto the field, anything can happen.”

With Arnold declaring he has “one eye on the Asian Cup and two eyes on the next World Cup”, the Socceroos boss said there was “no way” the Australians would be taking it easy against Messi’s men.

“I wish we could change the word friendly to fixture,” he said.

“When you put on that Australian badge over your heart, you put on that jersey, you get a cap, there’s no such thing as a friendly.

“It’s an international fixture and it’s an opportunity to go out there and continue to improve.

“Everything is about improvement, getting better, individually and as a group and making sure that every time we turn up, we’re ready to go out and do better.”
