Pete Carroll's bizarre mid-air meeting with Seahawks opens up Geno Smith trade possibility
Pete Carroll is preparing for his first major public appearance as Las Vegas Raiders head coach at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
However, even before arriving at the event, he found himself at the center of speculation following an unusual mid-flight interaction with Seattle Seahawks officials.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Grant Cohn, Carroll shared a flight to Indianapolis with Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald and general manager John Schneider.
During the flight, the former Seahawks coach reportedly left his seat and spent nearly an hour talking to Macdonald and Schneider in first class. His extended conversation was so noticeable that flight attendants eventually asked him to return to his seat.
Could Carroll be plotting a reunion with Geno Smith?
Given Carroll‘s long-standing relationship with Schneider and his recent advisory role with the Seahawks, a conversation between them wouldn’t normally raise eyebrows. However, the timing and duration of their discussion have led many to wonder if they were talking business – specifically about quarterback Geno Smith.
The Raiders are currently in search of a long-term solution at quarterback after Jimmy Garoppolo‘s struggles last season. Aidan O’Connell showed promise in his rookie year, but it’s unclear if Las Vegas views him as their starter moving forward.
Carroll, who played a pivotal role in Smith‘s resurgence with the Seahawks, could see the veteran quarterback as a strong fit for the Raiders‘ offense.
Smith is still under contract with Seattle but has been mentioned in trade rumors throughout the offseason. If the Seahawks are considering moving him, Carroll‘s Raiders would be a logical destination given his familiarity with the player.
However, while the speculation is intriguing, it remains highly unlikely that serious trade discussions took place mid-flight in a public setting. Raiders general manager John Spytek was not present, making it doubtful that any formal negotiations were happening.
Regardless of the nature of Carroll‘s conversation, the situation has added another layer of intrigue to the Raiders’ quarterback search. If Carroll is indeed interested in reuniting with Smith, there could be more developments in the coming weeks as teams prepare for the 2025 NFL season.

Russell Wilson is shaping up to be Tom Brady's quarterback of choice for the Raiders
NFL teams are in the planning stages for the 2025 season and the Las Vegas Raiders first step was to choose their new head coach, and after several interviews, the veteran Pete Carroll was selected
With Carroll on board, the next decision, and one in which Tom Brady, as one of the owners of the Raiders, will have a lot to do, is to know who will be the quarterback who will take control, after with Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell, they were the worst team in the AFC West with a losing record of 4-13, while the rest played playoffs: Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs, already installed in the Super Bowl
Tom Brady’s financial surprise revealed
According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Pete Carroll has maintained a strong bond with Russell Wilson, making him a “strong option” to be the Raiders’ new quarterback.

Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson set for reunion
In 2014, in just his second year in the NFL, Russell Wilson was the quarterback who led the Seattle Seahawks to a 43-8 thrashing of the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII, under the tutelage of Pete Carroll.Carroll coached the Seahawks for 14 seasons and left the team in January 2024, and with his return to the NFL, a reunion with Wilson could be in the works, who according to Rapoport on NFL GameDay, are still good friends.
“I understand that Russell Wilson wanted to play for the Raiders last year, which didn’t happen. It’s possible that union will be discussed,” Rapoport said, while on his X account he confirmed that “they have stuck together, and Wilson is a solid option in Las Vegas.”
Russell Wilson was the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024, where he had a good start with a 6-1 record replacing Justin Fields, but in Week 7 he suffered a calf injury and, in the end, the Steelers made the playoffs with a 10-7 record, but were eliminated in the Wild Card by losing 28-14 to the Baltimore Ravens.

DK Metcalf stands firm in his playing style despite penalties
DK Metcalf, the standout receiver for the Seahawks, remains unmoved in his approach to the game, even as penalties stack up against him. His physicality and aggression on the field, though at times straying from league guidelines, define his unique playing style.
Each week, Coach Pete Carroll presents a “penalty board” during Monday meetings, showcasing the players with the highest penalty counts. Metcalf‘s name has found its way to the top more than once. Carroll explained to the media, “He was up there with another guy. We all have to acknowledge it and recognize what our issues are.” He further emphasized that while Metcalf‘s aggressive nature is evident, there’s a need for him to be more careful. “He draws attention because of that. We’ve got to be cleaner. He knows it and he’s got to get it done.”
DK refuses to clean up his play
However, the board has had little effect on Metcalf’s perspective. Defiantly, he remarked, “It’s just a board to me, I’m not going to change the way I play.” He went on to list the various penalties attributed to him, from taunting to holding, suggesting that he sees them as a byproduct of his intense playstyle. “I’m not going to change who I am as a player or a person,” Metcalf added.
When questioned about possibly getting carried away during a game, Metcalf compared it to a typical day at work, saying, “Have you had a bad day at work sometimes? I’m my own person… I’m not going to shy away because he put a penalty board on the screen. I’m just going to continue to be me.”
The young receiver didn’t shy away from defending his stance. “I don’t feel like I was a problem or I need to make progress in a certain area,” Metcalf explained, emphasizing his view of football as an inherently violent sport.
The league is clear about avoiding “unnecessary roughness,” but the definition seems subjective to players. Metcalf‘s recent penalty for a hit on a Bengals player stands testament to the thin line that players navigate. While the league is pushing to eliminate unnecessary contact, players like Metcalf believe it to be an integral part of the game.

Seahawks embarrass Giants on MNF, sack Daniel Jones 11 times
Rookie cornerback Devon Witherson scored on a 97-yard interception return late in the third quarter and the Seattle Seahawks tied a team record with 11 sacks in a 24-3 victory over the struggling and offensively inept New York Giants on Monday night.
Geno Smith threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to DK Metcalf late in the first quarter after a strip-sack by defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. set up a short drive and Keneth Walker III scored on a 1-yard run just before halftime as the Seahawks (3-1) won their third straight.
A fourth-quarter interception Quandre Diggs set up a field goal by Jason Myers in the fourth quarter as the Seattle improve to 6-0 at MetLife Stadium, including the franchise’s only Super Bowl win.
The Seahawks D-line was unstoppable against the Giants
Bobby Wagner, Jordyn Brooks, Witherspoon and Uchenna Nwosu each had two sacks. Wagner also had 17 tackles.
Graham Gano kicked a 55-yard field goal for the Giants (1-3), who have played one good half in four games this season and have looked nothing like the team that last year made the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
Seattle was clinging to a 14-3 lead late in third quarter when the Giants moved from their 43 to the Seahawks 5. On second and goal, Daniel Jones tried to hit Parris Campbell and the receiver seemed to stumble. Jones’ pass went to Witherspoon, the No. 5 overall pick in the draft, and he scored almost untouched crossing from the right side of the field to the left to make it 21-3.
The Giants’ offense has really struggled the past two games with star running back Saquon Barkley out with high ankle sprain and left tackle Andrew Thomas down with hamstring injury for three games.
The Seahawks didn’t do a lot against the Giants’ defense. The only real drive they had was seven plays, 75 yards just before halftime that was engineered by backup Drew Lock, who replaced Smith after he tweaked a knee and needed X-Rays. The drive included a 51-yard pass to Noah Fant.
Smith, who returned for the second half, finished 13 of 20 for 110 yards. A battered Jones was 27 of 34 for 203 yards. He ran 10 times for 66 yards.
Daniel Jones’ blank stare after 40-0 loss to Cowboys: “It wasn’t our best game”
A very strange start to the Seahawks at Giants game in Week 4
Seattle’s first offensive play from scrimmage took about five minutes. Walker took a handoff and headed right. Inside linebacker Bobby Okereke broke through and seemingly made a tackle for a 2-yard loss. For a moment everyone on the field stopped.
Walker felt his body never touched the turf and he got up and ran 20 yards downfield, stopped and then to the end zone, where an official ruled touchdown.
There was a long review of the scoring play and videotape showed Walker’s elbow hit the turf. The touchdown call was reversed.
Monday Night Football injuries in week 4
Seattle: S Jamal Adams sustained a concussion on the opening series after being kneed in the helmet attempting to tackle Jones. Adams was playing in his first game since tearing quadriceps in the 2022 opener. RG Phil Haynes aggravated an calf injury and had to leave in the first half. G Damiel Lewis (ankle) left in the second quarter
Giants: Rookie C John Michael Schmitz (shoulder) and No. 2 tight end Daniel Bellinger (knee) left the game in the first half.
Up next for the Seahawks and Giants
Seahawks: Following a bye week, at Cincinnati on Oct. 15.
Giants: at Miami on Sunday.
