Philadelphia and Detroit battle for a new expansion spot for the WNBA

The NBA’sDetroit Pistons and Philadelphia 76ers have made official bids to bring WNBA expansion teams to their cities, signaling significant interest in the growth of women’s basketball. As the WNBA continues to experience increasing attendance and record television ratings, both bids highlight the league’s expanding footprint and growing appeal.

Detroit’s bid, spearheaded by Pistons owner Tom Gores, boasts an impressive ownership group. The group includes Lions owner Sheila Ford Hamp and NBA legends Grant Hill and Chris Webber.

Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell’s emotional reunion has Indiana Fever fans buzzing

The proposal includes constructing a new WNBA practice facility and team headquarters, with games to be played at Little Caesars Arena, the home of the Pistons and the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. Gores emphasized the opportunity to bring the WNBA back to Detroit, stressing the potential for increased investment and economic activity in the city.

There will be more teams soon

Philadelphia’s bid, led by the 76ers’ ownership group, features Comcast as a minority stakeholder. This bid, in development since 2021, also garners support from comedian Wanda Sykes and her wife, Alex Niedbalski-Sykes. The proposed team would play its games at a new arena being built in South Philadelphia as part of a joint venture with Comcast Spectator, Sixers owner Josh Harris, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, and Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker.

Both cities are vying for the WNBA’s 16th franchise. Other potential contenders include Nashville, Houston, and Austin. The WNBA has already announced expansion teams in the Bay Area, Toronto, and Portland. The Golden State Valkyries are set to debut this season, while the Toronto Tempo and Portland team are slated to begin play in 2026.

The bids from Detroit and Philadelphia underscore the growing interest in women’s basketball and the potential for the WNBA to broaden its reach across the United States. As the league continues to evolve, new teams will offer fans more opportunities to engage with the sport and support their local franchises.

  • LeBron James latest milestone overshadowed by JJ Redick's outburst for the Lakers

LeBron James latest milestone overshadowed by JJ Redick's outburst for the Lakers

LeBron James made NBA history on Tuesday night, but hardly anyone was talking about it after the game. The Lakers superstar passed Maurice Cheeks for sixth place on the all-time steals list during the first quarter against the Philadelphia 76ers, inching closer to yet another Hall of FamerGary Payton-on the leaderboard.

Normally, this kind of milestone would dominate the headlines. But instead, Lakers head coach JJ Redick had a moment that took over the conversation.

Incredible moment! LeBron James tarnished by JJ Redick’s outburst amid the Lakers’ difficulties

The Lakers came into the game riding a four-game win streak and had been playing some of their best basketball. Facing a 76ers team missing both Joel Embiid and Paul George, this looked like another winnable matchup. Instead, sloppy execution and lackluster energy in the second quarter set Redick off.

After a series of missed assignments and poor shot selection, Redick called a timeout-but he didn’t stop there. He stormed onto the court, grabbed the ball, and let his players hear it. His frustration was especially pointed at rookie Dalton Knecht, who seemed to misread a play, and Austin Reaves, who took an ill-advised shot. The moment quickly went viral, with fans debating whether this was the fire the Lakers needed or a sign of deeper issues.

Redick’s boiling point, LeBron’s milestone, and a Lakers team at a crossroads

Redick has been vocal all season, especially with referees, but this was a rare display of emotion toward his own players. For the most part, he’s kept his composure as a first-year head coach, but given the stakes of the season and the inconsistency that’s plagued the Lakers, this outburst felt like it had been building for a while.

With the team struggling to maintain focus against an undermanned opponent, Redick’s reaction made it clear he wasn’t going to let bad habits slide. Whether the players respond positively to it remains to be seen.

While Redick’s sideline explosion became the night’s biggest talking point, LeBron quietly made more history. His first-quarter steal officially moved him past Maurice Cheeks on the all-time steals list, making him one of the best defenders statistically in league history. Up next? Hall of Famer Gary Payton.

It was another remarkable achievement in a career filled with them, but with Redick stealing the spotlight-literally and figuratively-it barely got the attention it deserved.

The Lakers’ recent hot streak has kept them in the playoff conversation, but their inconsistency remains an issue. Redick’s outburst might be a turning point or just another footnote in a season full of ups and downs. Either way, the message was sent. Now it’s on the team to respond.

  • Joel Embiid ejected after heated outburst at female referee

Joel Embiid ejected after heated outburst at female referee

Joel Embiid made headlines Tuesday night, but not for the reasonsSixers fans might have hoped. During Philadelphia’s 111-106 win over the San Antonio Spurs, the star center was ejected in the second quarter after an emotional outburst directed at a female referee. The incident unfolded after Embiid was called for an offensive charge against Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama, a call that sent the reigning MVP into a frenzy.

The pivotal moment occurred when Embiid, wearing his now-iconic black mask following an orbital fracture, charged into Wembanyama in the paint. When the referee called a charging foul, Embiid erupted, flailing his arms and berating the official in a tirade that lasted long enough for his teammates to intervene. Two quick technical fouls were issued, and Embiid’s night was over just 14 minutes into the game.

Embiid Fires Back: 76ers Star Denies Lack of Effort

The ejection ignited a firestorm on social media. Some fans criticized Embiid for targeting a female referee with his verbal outburst, accusing him of unsportsmanlike conduct. “This was embarrassing for Embiid-especially yelling at a female ref,” one fan tweeted. Others, however, defended the Sixers star, arguing that the charging call was soft and suggesting the official may have overreacted.

Embiid’s performance prior to the ejection was far from his usual dominance. In his second game back from injury, he managed just nine points on 2-of-8 shooting and grabbed three rebounds. While his frustration with the call might be understandable given his lackluster showing, his actions left his team shorthanded in a crucial stretch of the game.

    Sixers find a way

Despite Embiid’s absence, the Sixers rallied behind Andre Drummond and Tyrese Maxey to secure the win. Drummond stepped up with 12 rebounds and three blocks, while Maxey added 25 points to keep the Spurs at bay.

This isn’t the first time Embiid has been accused of letting his emotions get the better of him. Critics have long labeled him a “diva” for his fiery demeanor, but Tuesday’s display could further fuel those allegations.

As the Sixers push for playoff positioning, Embiid’s ejection serves as a reminder of the fine line between passion and self-destruction. With the team relying heavily on their superstar, cooler heads must prevail.

Jared McCain records himself singing Drake under surgery drugs influence

Not every time is the right moment to turn a camera on and start recording you, specially if you are not sober. Well, it depends on what you are doing, if you do what Jared McCain did, it is just fine.

Jared McCain posts a video singing Drake while under the influence of surgery drugs

The Philadelphia 76ers rookie had to undergo knee surgery to fix his torn left lateral meniscus, an injury he suffered against the Indiana Pacers last week.

Always a good time to sing

While still on the effects of the medicines, he jumped on his TikTok account from the hospital bed to give his fans a good update about his injury, but surprised everyone as soon as he started recording.

As a well known rap fan, he gave updates by quoting a “Rich Baby Daddy” verse, a track by 6 God, Sexyy Red and SZA. “I still got some love deep inside of me, no need to lie to me, I know you got a guy,” McCain sang. “He’s not a guy to me.”

Fans quickly left their comments on the video and they highlighted how real he was for making a TikTok right after surgery. “Post-surgery haze and went straight to TikTok,” one fan said. “He’s so real!”

We still don’t know for how long he will be out of the courts, but if he keeps this positive vibe it wont be long!

Paul George and Karl-Anthony Towns enjoy wild 48 hours in Sin City with their better halves

The NBA offseason. That magical time when millionaires swap their jerseys for designer duds and hit the town. This year, the action is sizzling hotter than a summer day in Vegas, with none other than Paul George and Karl-Anthony Towns leading the charge. If you missed the social media explosion, let me paint the picture for you.

New Sixers star Paul George and his stunning wife, Daniela Rajic, joined forces with Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns and his equally glamorous girlfriend, Jordyn Woods, for a whirlwind 48-hour escapade in Sin City. And let me tell you, they did not disappoint.

Paul George’s winning basket, the best of the night in the NBA

The couples kicked things off at the Wynn, attending events for George’s podcast, “Podcast P,” and Carmelo Anthony’s“7pm In Brooklyn.” It’s not every day you get an NBA star double-header, but Vegas doesn’t do ordinary. From there, they turned up the heat even more, catching a Lil Wayne performance. Jordyn Woods gave us a taste of the action on Instagram, captioning her post with, “A little less than 48 hours In Vegas you know it’s a good time when you barely get photos .”

Dancing queens and bromance kings: Inside the NBA Stars’ Vegas adventure

And the fun didn’t stop there. Rajic shared a video of Woods dancing on her Instagram Story, affectionately dubbing her “lil miss sexy.” It’s clear these ladies know how to have a good time and keep their followers entertained.

But it wasn’t all about the dance floors and performances. George and Towns, who recently inked a four-year, $212 million deal with the 76ers, made sure to pose together for a snap. The camaraderie and bromance between these two giants were palpable, even through the screen.

It’s been a whirlwind for Paul and Daniela, who have been together since 2013 and tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in California last June. Meanwhile, Karl-Anthony and Jordyn celebrated four years of love this past May. Both women are no strangers to the NBA life, regularly supporting their men from the stands.

So, while the rest of us mortals are planning our summer barbecues, these NBA stars are living it up in Vegas, making memories (and social media gold) that will keep fans buzzing until the next season tip-off.

  • Is LeBron James thinking about signing with the Philadelphia 76ers? Here's what we know

Is LeBron James thinking about signing with the Philadelphia 76ers? Here's what we know

The future of LeBron James remains uncertain, at least for the rest of the world, for him it might be clearer. While everybody is still speculating on where he can end up if he does decide to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers, the options for him to go are very open.

One factor to maintain is where his son Bronny could end up once draft day arrives, and while he has maintained his college eligibility just in case he is picked by a team where the attraction and instant chemistry is not there, and he decides to stay in college.

While that las part unfolds, LeBron James is still thinking about where he should go, because there is no indication that retirement is in his itinerary any time soon. However, there is one place where he might be happy with if he does in fact decides to leave Los Angeles.

Philadelphia an option for LeBron James

A picture that has gone viral on social media has many Lakers fans analyzing what could happen if in fact the rumors are true. The photo everybody’s talking about shows four people having lunch at Sky High in Philadelphia and many claim that it was LeBron James, Nick Nurse and Daryl Morey.

Since the picture was taken from a distance, the faces weren’t clear enough to figure out if the claim was true, but it did leave everyone concerned about LeBron potentially considering the 76ers as a new landing spot.

But Savannah James’ Instagram activity almost certainly proves that the LeBron James-like person in the picture was not him, but what if there is a connection that might indicate James is considering leaving LA for Philly? That is yet to be seen.

  • Joel Embiid has dramatic postgame reaction and calls out Sixers fans after Knicks fans takeover

Joel Embiid has dramatic postgame reaction and calls out Sixers fans after Knicks fans takeover

In a playoff showdown that felt more like a home game for the New York Knicks, Sunday’s clash against the Philadelphia 76ers at the Wells Fargo Center showcased the undeniable power of fan presence in the NBA postseason. Despite being hosted in Philadelphia, the arena echoed with chants and roars of the Knicks faithful, transforming the atmosphere into a reminiscent scene from Madison Square Garden.

The fervor of thousands of Knicks supporters in enemy territory seemed to tip the scales as the Knicks clinched a tense 97-92 victory over the Sixers, seizing a commanding 3-1 series lead. The notable influx of New York fans not only altered the auditory landscape but potentially influenced the outcome of the game itself.

Throughout the match, the unmistakable presence of Knicks fans reverberated across the arena, punctuating key moments with their unwavering support. Even as Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid stepped up to the free-throw line, the resounding reaction from the stands underscored the unusual dynamic of a supposed home game inundated with opposing fans.

The Knicks fans took over in Philadelphia

Post-game scenes mirrored the on-court sensation, with Sixers star Joel Embiid visibly displeased with the crowd’s composition. The overwhelming presence of Knicks supporters undoubtedly created an atmosphere unfamiliar to the home team, potentially contributing to Embiid‘s fourth-quarter struggles, wherein he failed to make a single field goal and managed only one point.

While the Knicks faithful undoubtedly played a role in shaping the environment, the outcome of the game also highlighted missed opportunities for the Sixers. Despite the raucous crowd, Philadelphia had ample chances to secure victory, particularly as none of the Knicks’ role players found their shooting rhythm. However, a standout performance by Jalen Brunson, who tallied an impressive 47 points, ultimately sealed the win for New York.

As the series heads back to Madison Square Garden for a pivotal Game 5, the Sixers face the daunting prospect of contending with an electrifying home crowd that promises to reach unprecedented levels of intensity. If Sunday’s spectacle was any indication, Joel Embiid and his teammates are bracing themselves for an unforgettable atmosphere as the Knicks aim to advance to the next round.

  • Kevin Durant passes Shaq to become 8th-best all-time scorer, Suns beat 76ers

Kevin Durant passes Shaq to become 8th-best all-time scorer, Suns beat 76ers

Grayson Allen scored 32 points and tied a career-high with nine 3-pointers, leading the Phoenix Suns past the Philadelphia 76ers 115-102 on Wednesday night.

Allen made 10 of 17 shots from the field, including 9 of 15 from long range. He’s made at least eight 3-pointers in seven games this season, which is second in the NBA behind Golden State‘s Stephen Curry.

Kevin Durant added 22 points for the Suns while Devin Booker had 18 points, nine rebounds and 11 assists, falling just shy of his first regular-season triple double.

The Sixers continued their extended slide – they have a 9-18 record since Jan. 25. It’s a stretch that roughly mirrors the time seven-time All-Star center Joel Embiid has missed since surgery on his left knee.

Durant, a 14-time All-Star, passed Shaquille O’Neal for eighth place on the NBA’s career scoring list. The 35-year-old has 28,610 points. Next up on the list is Wilt Chamberlain, who has 31,419.

The Suns had a rough start, missing their first eight shots while turning the ball over four times. They recovered in a hurry, using a 23-6 run in the second quarter to push to a 60-47 halftime advantage despite 13 turnovers.

The Suns shot 10 of 20 (50%) from 3-point range and had a 34-18 rebounding advantage before the break. Allen led the way with 13 points, making 4 of 7 3-pointers.

  • Joel Embiid scores season-high 51 points as 76ers rock Timberwolves

Joel Embiid scores season-high 51 points as 76ers rock Timberwolves

Joel Embiid scored a season-high 51 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and the Philadelphia 76ers used a big fourth quarter to close out the Minnesota Timberwolves for a 127-113 win on Wednesday night.

Tyrese Maxey scored 35 points as Philadelphia (19-8) won for the seventh time in eight games, bouncing back nicely after a 108-104 loss to Chicago on Monday night.

“I felt like I was playing within the offense and not forcing anything,” said Embiid, who is averaging 38.3 points in the last 12 games and has scored 40 or more in four of his last five contests. “I took what was being given to me. And I’ve been trying to figure out is when to be aggressive and when to let my teammates do their thing.”

Minnesota (20-6) got 27 points from Anthony Edwards, 23 points from Karl-Anthony Towns and 21 from Jaden McDaniels. The Timberwolves entered Wednesday night as winners of nine of its last 10 games and possessors of the league’s best record.

“We didn’t play a clean or pretty game,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said. “I thought we would find a run or a rhythm. Thirty-seven points (for Philadelphia) in the fourth quarter is way too much – we needed it to be under 30 for sure.”

Embiid’s seventh +50 point game of his NBA career

It was Embiid’s seventh career game with at least 50 points. He also recorded his 12th straight game with 30 or more points and 10-plus rebounds. It is the NBA’s longest such streak since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar did it in 16 straight games for the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1971-72 season.

“We’re winning and that’s all that matters,” Embiid said. “Stats are great and it’s great to put up stats. But if it comes with a loss, then that’s a different story. If it comes with a win, it means a lot.”

“He’s continuing to get better and he’s just doing enough different things rhythmically to keep those guys guessing,” Sixers coach Nick Nurse said. “He has a feel that if guys step into him, he can get them. And I like when he goes downhill.”

A game that was billed as a clash of defensive styles turned toward the Sixers during an impressive display of offensive moves by Embiid in the third quarter. He scored 19 of Philadelphia’s 26 points in the period and kept the Sixers in the lead at 90-87 going into the fourth.

Embiid was 17 for 18 from the foul line on the night, taking advantage of foul trouble for Minnesota forward Rudy Gobert.

“Certainly, Rudy exiting the game in the first four minutes certainly hurt us,” Finch said.

Maxey scored 15 points in the final quarter, most of that coming during a five-minute stretch at the beginning of the period when Embiid was on the bench. No other Philadelphia player scored in double figures for the second game in a row.

“You have to use speed and be decisive,” Maxey said. “I think that if anyone is going to pick me up high (off the arc), they can’t keep up with me with speed, skill and work. I tried to be extremely aggressive.”

Philadelphia ended up losing starting guard De’Anthony Melton in the second half with a left thigh contusion.

  • Will Josh Giddey play against the Philadelphia 76ers? OKC make a controversial decision

Will Josh Giddey play against the Philadelphia 76ers? OKC make a controversial decision

The Oklahoma City Thunder play against the Philadelphia 76ers in just a few hours and people are eager to know if Josh Giddey will play. An NBA spokesperson revealed on Friday that the league is officially opening an investigation to look into the claims that Giddey allegedly has a relationship with a minor. Videos and photos that seem to incriminate the OKC star went viral on Wednesday evening. Although the evidence is not conclusive, there are enough signs to open this investigation. Given the circumstances, the natural thing to do in order to avoid more pressure for the player and the team was for the Thunder to bench Giddey. But whan asked about this on Saturday, coach Mark Daigneault’s response was surprising to say the least.

Will Josh Giddey play against the Sixers?

Thus far, the Thunder hasn’t featured Josh Giddey in any of their social media coverage leading up to the game. Their plan is probably to keep pressure away from him because surprise, surprise! Coach Daigneault confirmed Josh Giddey is definitely going to play aainst the Sixers. A reporter before the game on Saturday confirmed the young star is playing at Paycom Center. The coach’s reasoning behind the decision is the following: “Available to play, will play. There is no change in status from a basketball standpoint. Still, I have no comment on anything else. Just with the information that we have at this point, that’s the decision we’ve made. It’s really not even a decision to be honest with you.”

At this point, the Oklahoma City Thunder is leaving the investigation in the hands of the NBA an will do what ever they are told once the investigation concludes. It will be interesting to see the reaction from the public when Giddey gets on the court later today. Also, we should all keep an eye out for Giddey’s potential interations with Philadelphia 76ers players. Some consider it may be too soon to place Josh in the spotlight while there is an open investigation of a possible crime he may have committed. In terms of the game itself, we are talking about two of the best teams this season with the Thunder at an 11-4 record and the Sixers with a 10-5 record. Will this situation affect the rest of the Oklahoma players?
