The IPL 2025 opener between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens witnessed an unusual and emotional moment when an 18-year-old fan, Rhituparno Pakhira, breached security to meet his idol, Virat Kohli. The incident, which briefly disrupted the match, has sparked conversations about fan devotion and security measures at sporting events.
The fan’s bold move to meet Virat Kohli
On March 22, during the 13th over of RCB’s innings, Pakhira scaled the fencing near the ‘G’ Block of Eden Gardens and ran onto the pitch. This occurred shortly after Kohli had scored his half-century, anchoring RCB’s chase against KKR. The fan managed to evade security personnel and reached Kohli, hugging him and falling at his feet in admiration. The match was halted for a few minutes as security escorted him off the field.
In a heartwarming gesture, Kohli picked up Pakhira, asked his name, and advised him to “run away fast” before security intervened. Kohli also requested guards to handle the situation gently, ensuring no harm came to the young fan. This composed response showcased Kohli’s understanding of his fans’ devotion.
“The moment I touched his feet, Virat Kohli sir, asked my name and said, ‘Jaldi se bhaag jaa (run away fast). He even asked the security to not hit me,” said the fan as quoted by Times of India.
Legal consequences for breaching the security protocols
Notably, Pakhira was arrested by Kolkata Police and taken to Maidan Police Station. He was charged under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 132 (assaulting or using criminal force against a public servant), 329(3) (criminal trespass), and 125 (reckless actions endangering personal safety). Additionally, he has been banned from entering Eden Gardens for the remainder of the IPL season.
Spain is through to the Euro 2024 final after a 2-1 win over France but could be sweating on the availability of captain Alvaro Morata after a bizarre incident at full-time.
Morata was walking towards teammates celebrating the victory when a pitch invader ran at the group with his phone, prompting security to rush in and grab a hold of him.
Spain’s first-choice striker was caught up in the chaos though as a steward running to diffuse the situation slipped over and collided with Morata, who was then later seen walking away clutching at his right knee.

Socceroos legend John Aloisi said on Optus Sport’s coverage that he had “never ever seen” anything like it “before”.
“That’s horrible,” he added.
The final is just five days away and while Morata was able to walk away unassisted he did not look comfortable.

Erling Haaland ended his Champions League goal drought as Manchester City extended their perfect start to the tournament with a 3-1 win at Swiss side Young Boys.
Haaland arrived in rain-lashed Bern without a goal in his previous five Champions League matches.
The City striker had scored 35 goals in his first 30 Champions League appearances and he got back on track in the competition with a second-half double at the Wankdorf Stadium.
Haaland’s penalty restored City’s lead after Meschack Elia had cancelled out Manuel Akanji’s second-half opener for the holders.
Switzerland defender Akanji’s first goal for City this season came on his return to his homeland, just days after he was sent off in the treble winners’ victory over Brighton in the Premier League.
Haaland struck again in the closing stages to wrap up the points and take him to 11 goals in all competitions this term.

Pep Guardiola’s side sit top of Group G after a third successive victory following their wins against Red Star Belgrade and RB Leipzig.
Another success against Young Boys at the Etihad Stadium next month would ensure City qualify for the knockout stages with two matches to spare.
Guardiola has admitted City are suffering a mild hangover from winning the treble, with consecutive Premier League defeats against Wolves and Arsenal recently following a League Cup loss to Newcastle.
But City are unbeaten in their last 16 Champions League matches and even the unique challenge posed by Young Boys’ synthetic pitch could not derail their dominance in the tournament.
They remain a potent force even at less than 100 percent and should have taken an immediate lead against Young Boys when Rodri stooped to head just wide from Matheus Nunes’ corner.
Young Boys keeper Anthony Racioppi repelled Jeremy Doku’s blast after the City winger was set up by Jack Grealish.
As City’s pressure mounted, Grealish’s shot was dropped by Racioppi, but Nunes’s close-range effort was cleared off the line by Loris Benito.
Despite their dominance, Guardiola’s men were almost caught by a pair of sucker punches.
Nathan Ake’s last-ditch tackle stopped Sandro Lauper in his tracks as he prepared to shoot, while Cedric Itten’s header looped onto the roof of Ederson’s net.
Racioppi came to the hosts’ rescue on the stroke of half-time with a fine save from Doku’s curler and then another impressive stop to keep out Rodi’s flicked effort.

City finally made the breakthrough in the 48th minute when Ruben Dias’s header was pushed onto the bar by Racioppi and Akanji was on hand on to poke home from close range.
Their advantage lasted only four minutes as Cheikh Niasse’s defence-splitting pass from deep inside his own half sent Elia sprinting clear.
Ederson raced off his line in a bid to avert the danger but Elia lofted a superb chipped finish over the Brazilian from the edge of the area.
Having unexpectedly squandered the lead, City quickly went back in front after 67 minutes.
Rodri was sent crashing in the area by Mohamed Ali Camara and Haaland stepped up to smash home the penalty.
Julian Alvarez’s 74th-minute goal was disallowed for a handball by Grealish in the build-up.
But Haaland ensured City would head home with their 100 percent start intact, taking a touch from Rodri’s pass before whipping a fine finish into the far corner from just inside the area in the 86th minute.
BARCELONA CONTINUE WINNING WAYS
Elsewhere, Barcelona continued their perfect start in the Champions League and warmed up for the Clasico at the weekend with a 2-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk.
The Spanish champions held off their Ukrainian visitors to take their third win from three games and put one foot into the knock-out stages after failing to progress in the past two seasons.
Ferran Torres opened the scoring for Barca with 20-year-old midfielder Fermin Lopez smashing home the second from the edge of the box.
After 17-year-old debutant Marc Guiu struck the winner against Athletic Bilbao at the weekend, Lopez’s display meant it was another fine night for Barcelona’s La Masia talent factory.

Heorhiy Sudakov pulled one back for Shakhtar after a Barca defensive lapse, creating a nervy finale for the hosts, but they held on to the three points.
Barca took forward Joao Felix off hurt in the final stages, with another injury to add to a long list the last thing they need.
Barcelona were already without several key players, including Robert Lewandowski, Pedri and Frenkie de Jong, leading Xavi to deploy winger Torres in the middle of the attack.
The former Manchester City player said he was ready to step up a level in an important week for the club, with Real Madrid visiting on Saturday.
He started brightly and hammered home before the half-hour mark after Ilkay Gundogan sweetly teed up Lopez, whose effort came back off the upright.
The goal was initially ruled out but VAR showed Lopez had timed his run to perfection to reach the German midfielder’s nicely weighted chip over the top.
Lopez, who made his debut in August, rescued Barcelona a draw earlier this season at Real Mallorca and staked his claim for a start against Madrid with his best performance to date, in for the suspended Gavi.
Dmytro Riznyk had saved well from the midfielder early on but could do nothing about his goal, a cannonball strike, in off the post to shore up Barca’s position.
Riznyk did well to save a Felix header early in the second half and was relieved to see the offside flag up against Torres as he clipped home after an hour.
Just a couple of minutes later, Shakhtar earned a foothold in the game. Joao Cancelo did not get back into position after yet another foray forward, and Oriol Romeu was left in the dust by Sudakov, who finished well at the near post.
It was the first goal Barcelona have conceded in the campaign. Lopez hit the post with another long-range effort and then had a header ruled out for offside as he continued his all-action display.
Barcelona wound down seven minutes of stoppage time to take the points as supporters in the stands turned their attention to the impending Clasico.
Shakhtar are third, provisionally level with second-placed Porto on three points, who visit bottom side Antwerp later, while Barcelona lead with nine.
BORUSSIA DORTMUND BLOW GROUP OF DEATH WIDE OPEN
Borussia Dortmund blew the Champions League’s group of death wide open as Felix Nmecha’s goal beat Newcastle 1-0 at St James’ Park.
Newcastle twice hit the woodwork in the closing stages through Callum Wilson and Fabian Schar, but now have work to do to reach the last 16 on their return to the competition after 20 years.
The German giants’ first win in Group F lifts Dortmund above Newcastle on head-to-head record with both sides on four points.
Paris Saint-Germain lead the section on six points with last season’s semi-finalists AC Milan bottom on two.
Newcastle had announced their return to the Champions League stage in style with a 4-1 demolition of PSG three weeks ago.
But the Magpies were handed a deserved reality check after a surprisingly flat performance.
Dortmund had failed to score in their opening two games in the toughest group in the draw.
But their defeat by PSG last month was the only time they have lost in 12 games so far this season.

Dortmund dominated the opening 45 minutes, but should still have fallen behind when Anthony Gordon fired straight at Gregor Kobel with just the Swiss goalkeeper to beat.
Newcastle were then dealt a major blow when former Dortmund striker Alexander Isak was forced off with injury.
Donyell Malen and Niclas Fullkrug tested Nick Pope but it was an inspired piece of play from a centre-back that eventually helped Edin Terzic’s men break their duck.
Nico Schlotterbeck robbed Gordon of possession in midfield and burst forward before crossing for Nmecha to stroke into the far corner in first-half stoppage time.
Sandro Tonali is expected to be handed a 10-month ban in the coming days for alleged breaches of betting rules during his time with AC Milan.
However, Eddie Howe still turned to the Italian international off the bench to try and inspire a turnaround.
Newcastle were left to rue one huge missed opportunity when Isak’s replacement, Wilson, fired into Kobel’s legs with just the goalkeeper to beat.
Wilson then saw a flicked header come back off the crossbar. Howe’s men came even closer in the dying seconds of stoppage time as Schar’s deflected effort looped over a helpless Kobel and bounced kindly back off the bar for Dortmund into the path of a covering defender.
But the visitors clung on to leave the group delicately poised heading into another clash between the sides in Dortmund on November 7.
PITCH INVADER’S CHEEKY ACT AS PSG STORM TO BIG WIN
Kylian Mbappe, Randal Kolo Muani and Lee Kang-in were all on target as Paris Saint-Germain got back to winning ways in the Champions League with an impressive 3-0 home victory against AC Milan.
PSG were eager to bounce back from their 4-1 defeat away to Newcastle United three weeks ago and they ultimately had too much attacking quality for their Italian visitors at the Parc des Princes.
Mbappe opened the scoring with a lethal finish just after the half-hour mark for his 10th club goal this season, and his France teammate Kolo Muani added another shortly after half-time.
Lee Kang-in then came off the bench to net the third late on, the South Korean star’s first for the club.
PSG thoroughly deserved their win, with the Ligue 1 side a completely different proposition from the disjointed team that was overloaded with forwards and overrun in midfield in the defeat by Newcastle.

Having started their European campaign with a 2-0 home win against Borussia Dortmund, Luis Enrique’s PSG side top Group F at the halfway stage with six points ahead of a trip to Milan early next month.
Milan, the seven-time European champions, are bottom of the group with two points and a big concern for Stefano Pioli’s side will be that they have yet to score a goal in the competition this season.
This game saw French international brothers Lucas Hernandez, the PSG defender, and Theo, the Milan captain, come up against each other for the first time.
It also saw PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and his Milan counterpart Mike Maignan come up against the clubs with whom they started their careers.
But the stars of the show were elsewhere, with Mbappe — who was hugged by a pitch invader in the first half — looking arguably sharper than he has done at any point up to now this season for PSG.

Meanwhile, the 17-year-old Warren Zaire-Emery was exceptional in the PSG midfield and his latest impressive performance will not have gone unnoticed by France coach Didier Deschamps, who was watching from the stands.
There were seven current full French internationals on the field at kick-off and it was national team captain Mbappe who opened the scoring in the 32nd minute.
Zaire-Emery collected possession just inside his own half, burst away from Tijjani Reijnders and found Mbappe, who advanced into the box before beating Maignan with an early, low shot into the corner.
That was a blow to Milan, who had started well and upset the Paris defence with their high pressing, and also saw Rafael Leao curl an effort not far wide shortly before the goal.
It was not just Zaire-Emery who impressed in the home midfield, with Vitinha continuing his fine form this season in a position close to Mbappe on the left.
Meanwhile Manuel Ugarte is the man who holds it all together, but his physical approach denied PSG a second goal three minutes into the second half.
Ousmane Dembele thought he had scored his first goal for the Qatar-owned club since signing from Barcelona in the close season, as he ran through to plant a low shot beyond Maignan into the far corner.
However, Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic disallowed the goal following a VAR review for a foul by Ugarte on Yunus Musah in the build-up.
PSG didn’t have to wait long to make it 2-0 though, as Kolo Muani turned the ball into an empty net in the 53rd minute after Maignan had pushed out a Dembele shot.
Milan tried unsuccessfully to find a way back into the game, while Maignan intervened more than once to stop Mbappe scoring again, notably touching a shot onto the outside of the post.
But the home side made it three in the 89th minute as the outstanding Zaire-Emery powered forward down the right and set up Lee to score with a first-time strike.
CELTIC HOLD OFF 10-MAN ATLETICO
Celtic earned their first Champions League point of the season but were left to rue twice letting a lead slip in a pulsating 2-2 draw against Atletico Madrid.
The Scottish champions struck after just four minutes through Kyogo Furuhashi before Antoine Griezmann levelled on the rebound after his penalty was turned onto the post by home goalkeeper Joe Hart.
Luis Palma restored Celtic’s lead before half-time, but Alvaro Morata’s header ensured Atletico’s unbeaten run stretches to eight games.
The Spanish giants had Rodrigo De Paul sent off in the closing stages. Celtic, though, could not make the man advantage count in the final eight minutes plus stoppage time as their 10-year wait for a Champions League group-stage win at home goes on.
A draw takes Atletico to within a point of Group E leaders Feyenoord, who beat Lazio 3-1.
Ange makes history! Spurs v Fulham wrap | 03:32
Celtic remain bottom, three points adrift of the third-placed Italians. There could also be further ramifications from the match for Celtic after fans defied a club plea by waving Palestine flags in a show of support to people in Gaza during the war between Israel and Palestinian militants Hamas.
A leading Celtic fans’ group announced they would distribute flags outside the stadium.
In a statement before the match, Celtic asked for “banners, flags and symbols relating to the conflict and those countries involved in it are not displayed at Celtic Park at this time”.
Once the action got underway, the home side were inspired by the hostile atmosphere.
Matt O’Riley’s through ball sliced open the Atletico defence for Kyogo to dink home his seventh goal of the season.
But Brendan Rodgers’ men have found the step up to Champions League level tougher defensively and a naive challenge from Greg Taylor on Nahuel Molina handed the visitors a glorious chance to equalise.
Hart tipped Griezmann’s spot-kick onto the woodwork, but the ball bounced back kindly for the French international to roll into an empty net.
Celtic hit back within three minutes when Palma blasted into the far corner from Daizen Maeda’s cross.
Atletico thought they had levelled again before half-time only for Axel Witsel’s header to be ruled out for offside.
Diego Simeone’s men did not have to wait long after the break to equalise when Morata stooped to divert a brilliant header high past Hart from Marcos Llorente’s cross on 53 minutes.
Atletico then looked set to go on and win the game as Celtic paid for their first-half efforts by tiring in the second period.
But De Paul dived in on Paulo Bernardo to earn a second yellow card and at least give the hosts some breathing space in the closing stages, even if they failed to find a winner.
Argentinian football legend Lionel Messi has been in the middle of the action since he burst onto the global football stage and has maintained his image as one of the good guys of the sporting world.
A favourite of football fans around the world, the 68,000 fans who turned up to The Workers’ Stadium in Beijing for Argentina’s 2-0 friendly win over Australia probably would have turned up if no one else was on the field with Messi.
It’s safe to say he knows what it’s like to be the centre of attention.
So when he leaves you hanging out to dry like he did with 20-year-old Socceroo Alexander Robertson, it’s probably hard not to take it personally.
Vision emerged from the Paramount+ coverage of the game with Robertson trying to get Messi’s attention by grabbing the back of his jersey, but the 35-year-old simply refused to turn around.
It was assumed that he was trying to swap jerseys with Messi, while others speculated he was simply looking for a handshake.
“Tonight is all about Leo Messi – and now the fight is on for his shirt!” commentator Simon Hill said.
“Alexander Robertson having a go, and I’m sure there’ll be a few contenders for it!”

Regardless of what he was looking for, he got next to nothing from Messi as the superstar continued congratulating his teammates until the Aussie walked away.
Messi did appear to look at him at one point but it didn’t help Robertson’s chances at all as he finally accepted the cold shoulder.
Fans said that Messi must have thought it was one of his teammates, while another said the superstar appeared to have promised it to another Socceroo and told Robertson as much.
It comes after last years’ World Cup where Messi swapped jerseys with players throughout the tournament.
Socceroos striker Mitch Duke also received a jersey after the Socceroos’ loss in Qatar.
After drinking seven bottles of water in order to provide a urine sample after the match, Duke walked back into the dressing room to find a Messi jersey on his bag.
Robertson, the Manchester City-signed prodigy, who was born in Scotland and eligible to play for his birth country, England, Peru or Australia, did get on the field in the friendly in Beijing, being subbed on in the 73rd minute for Mathew Leckie.
Rubbing salt in the wound over the jersey/handshake snub, it came after a 15-year-old Chinese fan wearing a Messi jersey ran onto the field late in the game and straight into a hug with his hero.

He then did a lap around the field before giving up the chase with security.
Bizarrely, he was then sent back to his seat by security because he was under-18 and was swamped by fans in the stands.
Messi put on a show for the jam packed stands as he set two marks in the 2-0 win against Australia on Thursday night.
The Argentine star scored the fastest goal of his historic career, finding the back of the net after only 81 seconds.
It became his seventh straight scoring game for his country, also setting a new personal record.
Messi has now scored in every minute of a game at some point of his career, except for the opening minute.
Chelsea’s new owners spent a stunning amount of money for their first season in the Premier League, but now the cashed-up American hierarchy is set to implement a major change in their transfer policy.
Meanwhile, there’s been a major admission over the future of England international Declan Rice, as well as a pair of Brighton superstars.

CHELSEA SET FOR 15-PLAYER CLEANOUT
Chelsea’s renowned loan farming is set to finally come to an end.
Under former owner Roman Abramovich, Chelsea had dozens of players on their books, sending them out on loans around the world – despite many having no real prospect of ever making the first team.
In 2019, a whopping 41 players were out on loan from Stamford Bridge.
This season, the number is 21.
But new FIFA regulations from next season will limit teams to sending out just seven players on overseas loans. That excludes players under 21 and academy products.
According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea will look to sell any players who aren’t developing from their loans or have little chance of becoming a genuine first-team player.
Up to 15 players could be sold this off-season. The report states Malang Sarr, Ethan Ampadu and Henry Lawrence are set to leave, while Dujon Sterling will join Rangers and Xavier Simons has locked in a move to Hull.
Romelu Lukaku and Callum Hudson-Odoi are two more possible departures, while the club is happy to let defender Thiago Silva make an emotional return to Fluminense if he so chooses.
Chelsea faced plenty of criticism over the years for their loan system, particularly when players were sent out on loan after loan for years at a time.
That includes the likes of 28-year-old Baba Rahman, who has just finished a seventh loan after his arrival in 2015. He played just 23 games for Chelsea in all competitions before being sent out on the series of loans to Germany, France, Spain, Greece, and most recently England’s Championship.
Brighton appears resigned to losing some of their superstar players after another sensational season. The south-coast club currently sit sixth, four points off fifth-placed Liverpool but with a game in hand.
New manager Roberto de Zerbi has taken the team to new heights after replacing Graham Potter, who went to Chelsea early in the season.
Speaking to Sky Sports after Brighton’s stunning 3-0 win over Arsenal, De Zerbi said: “For sure, we will lose some players.
“Maybe Caicedo, maybe Mac Allister. We have to be ready to bring in other good players.
“For the likes of Kaoru Mitoma and Pervis Estupinan, I think for them the best solution is to stay with us. I don’t know if they are ready to play in the big teams yet. We can offer them the opportunity to progress and improve.”

Moises Caicedo, the Ecuador international, had a £70m offer from Arsenal rejected late in January, when there was also strong interest from Chelsea.
Both of those teams look set to revive their pursuit of the star midfielder, with Manchester United and Liverpool also interested.
World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister is also on a long contract with the Seagulls, who have set a similar over-£70m price tag on the Argentina gun. Liverpool is keenly interested as they eye a major midfield overhaul.
James Milner is set to go the other way as a free agent, while Brighton have already sealed a club-record transfer for Watford’s Joao Pedro.
Meanwhile, Brighton is also reportedly close to a deal to land Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud on a free transfer.
Sky Sports reports the German international is in advanced talks for his Premier League move.
West Ham manager David Moyes has publicly said for the first time that the club could lose superstar midfielder Declan Rice.
The 24-year-old turned down a £200,000-a-week contract offer 18 months ago, and is set on fulfilling his Champions League dream after six seasons with the Hammers’ senior side.
Arsenal is the most likely landing place, but Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United are also interested.
The Hammers are hoping for £120m ($A225m), or £100m plus a player, but much depends on whether they avoid relegation or not. Were they to be relegated, his price tag would diminish greatly.
“We honestly hope he stays,” said Moyes. “We’d love for him to be a West Ham player but we are aware that might not be the case at the end of the season.
“So that’s one of the scenarios around planning. There are plans that we have Dec here but we’re also fully aware there is a good chance we won’t have him.”
The Hammers have been linked to a move for former Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, who has admitted he is struggling after falling out of Marseille’s starting side.

MAN UTD BACK IN FOR JUVE STAR
Before this season, Manchester United were close to signing Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot.
But the deal fell through after the English club and the French midfielder failed to agree on personal terms.
Now, the 28-year-old’s contract is about to expire, with Juventus seemingly unwilling to offer him a fresh deal.
French outlet L’Equipe reports United boss Erik ten Hag is ready to try again, this time with the added benefit of the deal being a free transfer.
But they’ll reportedly have to battle Newcastle for his services.
Rabiot, who previously played for Paris Saint Germain, scored France’s first goal of the 2022 World Cup against Australia, but we won’t hold that against him.

REAL MADRID STAR UP FOR GRABS AS GUNNERS LOOM
Real Madrid has reportedly told Ferland Mendy he can leave the club at season’s end, per the Sunday Mirror.
The 27-year-old is contracted until 2025, but Madrid is hoping to offload a number of players to free up squad (and salary) space.
Arsenal have Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kieran Tierney on their books at left back, but the latter is unsettled over a lack of game time and could depart.
The report states a likely price tag around £17.5m, with Spurs also named as a potential destination.
Sam Kerr’s second-half goal proved the difference as Chelsea beat Manchester United 1-0 to win a third successive English Women’s FA Cup final before a record-breaking crowd at Wembley on Sunday.
But it needed a desperate block from Chelsea goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger in the seventh minute of added-on time to deny United an equaliser in front of 77,390 spectators — a world-record attendance for a domestic women’s football match.
Chelsea manager Emma Hayes’s decision to bring on Pernille Harder, who has been injured for much of the season, just before the hour proved a turning point in a match where United had the better of the early exchanges.
“I think it’s the sign of a great team, we didn’t have our best game but we pushed through,” Australia striker Kerr told the BBC.
Hayes said her team’s experience of big-match occasions at Wembley had served them well.
“We’ve played here more times than Stamford Bridge. Yes it’s home.”
Hayes added: “We know how to stay in a game and even if we weren’t at our best we have to work out how to change it.”
It took United, in their first women’s FA Cup final, just 20 seconds after kick-off to put the ball into the Chelsea net only for the goal to be disallowed for offside.
Chelsea, the reigning English women’s Super League champions, failed to clear Ella Toone’s cross from the right and Leah Galton swept the ball in.

But the flag had gone up, with VAR confirming Toone had moved a fraction too early.
United, who only established a women’s team in 2018, dominated the first half. They almost broke the deadlock just after the half-hour when Millie Turner’s deflected effort was well saved by Berger.
United went close again when Galton poked the ball over from six yards out from an Alessia Russo cross.
But three minutes before half-time, Chelsea almost punished United’s failure to take their chances when Lauren James’s looping header was brilliantly clawed away one-handed by United goalkeeper Mary Earps, one of the heroines of England’s European Championship final-winning team at Wembley last year.
Goalless at the interval, the match turned in Chelsea’s favour soon after Harder came on.
Maya Le Tissier failed to deal with a long ball and Kerr raced on to it down the left wing.
The ensuing cross found Harder, but her first touch saw the ball trapped under her foot, and a weak shot proved no problem for Earps.

Harder, however, was instrumental in Chelsea going 1-0 up in the 68th minute when her excellent low cross from out on the right found Kerr, who didn’t have to break stride as she turned the ball in at the back post.
Kerr’s goal meant the forward, who celebrated with her trademark back flip, had scored in three consecutive FA Cup finals.
“Sam Kerr is priceless but let’s credit Pernille,” said Hayes.
“We know we needed more stretching runs,” added the Blues boss, who has now won 12 major trophies since taking charge of Chelsea in 2012.
United almost made it 1-1 in the very closing stages when Berger flapped at a cross, only to block Galton’s shot before Chelsea cleared the danger to stay on course for another league and cup ‘double’.
Afterwards, rueful United manager Marc Skinner said: “Chelsea have done hardly anything in the game, but they are winners for a reason, they find that tiny little gap.”
He added: “We won’t dwell on this, it fuels us. We watch this (Chelsea’s celebrations), this will be us in future.”
Second placed Arsenal trail City by four points and a defeat for the Gunners at Nottingham Forest on Saturday would hand Pep Guardiola’s men their fifth title in six years.
Fired by Ilkay Gundogan’s brace and Erling Haaland’s latest goal, City’s 3-0 win at Everton earlier on Sunday had moved them within touching distance of the title.
Arsenal’s dismal loss makes the silverware almost certain to remain in Manchester.
Even if Arsenal beat Forest, City will be champions for a third successive season if they defeat Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium in their next game on May 21.
Speaking after City’s win at Goodison Park, Guardiola revelled in his team’s ability to dominate in the title race while also competing for the Champions League and the FA Cup.
City host Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final second leg on Wednesday with the tie level at 1-1 and face Manchester United in the FA Cup final.
“It’s a dream come true being here. The only team in Europe to be fighting in all competitions,” Guardiola said.
“From minute one we took the game in our hands. It was a brilliant performance at the end of the season.

“Still it is not over, in the Premier League is it never over. I said to the players try to relax and just do what you have done for the last four or five years.” City have three games to play, with the Chelsea clash followed by trips to Brighton and Brentford, while Arsenal have just a home match against Wolves after their trip to Forest.
While battle-tested City are powering towards the finish line, Arsenal’s young team have choked away their bid to win a first title since 2004.
Arsenal’s recent four-game winless run, including a 4-1 thrashing at City, allowed their rivals to seize top spot, an opportunity they have exploited in ruthless fashion.
“We have a very experienced team and it’s not really a new situation to us, competing for the last few games of the season with someone else,” City midfielder Gundogan said.
“The margin for mistakes is very slim, we know that, and that we were able to live these moments already in the past helps us a lot.”
Although Arsenal’s unexpected title challenge seems destined to fall short, it has still been a hugely encouraging season for the north Londoners after over a decade of underachievement.

There is no shame in coming second to a team of treble-chasing City’s class, although Gunners skipper Martin Odegaard was crushed at the loss.
Asked if the title race is over, Odegaard said: “Yeah it feels like that. It is going to be very difficult now we have to be honest. It is tough to take.
“It is not a good feeling at the moment. The way we played, particularly in the second half, I don’t know what happened to be honest. It feels like there is no hope now.”
Odegaard went close with a stinging shot that whistled just wide before their second half collapse against Brighton.
Leandro Trossard almost netted against his old club when the Arsenal forward’s effort clipped the top of the bar.
But Brighton landed their knockout blow in the 51st minute as Enciso made the breakthrough.
Estupinan’s initial cross was blocked but he knocked the rebound towards Enciso and he headed home while Arsenal appealed in vain for a foul on Jakub Kiwior.
Undav bagged Brighton’s second goal in the 86th minute as Trossard carelessly lost possession, allowing the forward to lift a deft lob over Ramsdale.
Estupinan sent Arsenal fans streaming to the exits deep into stoppage-time when he slotted home after Undav’s shot was parried by Ramsdale.
Serbian goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic was punched in the face in a shocking fan attack during Sevilla’s Europa League defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands.
Dmitrovic was only introduced to the Sevilla line-up at the last minute after regular No. 1 Yassine Bounou was unwell prior to the match.
But the Serbian gloveman not only conceded two goals, but was the victim of a horrific attack from a pitch invader, who rushed the keeper and punched him in the face.

Dmitrovic quickly subdued his assailant before security staff marched the fan from the ground to loud jeers from the crowd. The goalkeeper was apparently uninjured and played the remainder of the match.
Luuk de Jong and Fabio Silva scored for PSV late in the match, while the Dutch side had Mauro Junior sent off in stoppage time.
But six-time champions Sevilla progressed from the last-16 tie 3-2 on aggregate despite the 2-0 defeat in the second leg.
Dmitrovic said (translated from Spanish): “He pushed me from behind and then he got in my face and tried to hit me. I think it brushed me a little on the side of the nose. And then, to be honest, I really wanted to hit him.
“But it’s never pretty. If you want to fight, we go to an event or a sport like boxing or anything. Here in this one, in the sport of football they don’t deserve those things, but there is always some, some fan who is drunk and mad, there is an idiot who assaults, but hey, that shouldn’t happen here. I hope they punish him like any other who jumps on the field.”
