Premier League title race heats up as Spurs’ Champions League dream dealt big blow — Wrap

Manchester City kept the heat on Premier League leaders Arsenal on Sunday, seeing off a feisty challenge from Nottingham Forest after Mikel Arteta’s men held their nerve to beat Tottenham.

A captivating three-way title race has become a duel between Pep Guardiola’s City and Mikel Arteta’s Gunners, who are determined to make amends for last season’s late collapse.

Arsenal are on 80 points with just three matches to go, one point clear of City, but the champions crucially have a game in hand and remain firm favourites.

EPL Wrap: Gunners fire against Spurs | 02:11

The Gunners raced into a 3-0 lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the early kick-off on Sunday, surviving a late fright to win 3-2 and temporarily move four points clear at the top of the table.

City, though not at their dominating best, battled past profligate Forest, who are fighting for their lives, with goals from Josko Gvardiol and Erling Haaland.

Croatia defender Gvardiol opened the scoring, heading in Kevin De Bruyne’s corner shortly after the half-hour mark, and Haaland coolly slotted home after another assist from the impressive De Bruyne in the 71st minute to make it 2-0.

But Forest, who remain just one point clear of the drop zone with three games to play, will rue a number of squandered opportunities, including two glaring misses from forward Chris Wood.

Guardiola was relieved that his team had come out on top but warned against complacency in the final weeks of the season as they hunt a domestic trophy double.

He does not believe his team can afford to drop any points as they chase an unprecedented fourth straight English top-flight title.

“We prefer they (Arsenal) lose, we cannot control what they do, they make a good result,” said the City boss, whose team are now unbeaten in 31 matches in all competitions.

“Four games left, I don’t think we can lose any points and we know exactly what we have to do.”

Nuno Espirito Santo’s Forest, staring at the trap door, will desperately hope to recover at least one point from their appeal against a four-point deduction for breaking Premier League financial rules.

EPL WRAP: Salah, Klopp fiery exchange | 03:11

Arsenal know if City win their remaining games, they cannot be caught but they show no signs of wilting under intense pressure.

Arteta’s men silenced the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a three-goal blast before halftime.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s own goal put Arsenal ahead before Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz netted to leave Arsenal in complete control.

Cristian Romero and Son Heung-min struck for Tottenham after the interval to set up a nervous finish, but the visitors clung on by their fingertips.

Arteta believes his team are better equipped to win the title than last season, when they stumbled badly in the run-in, having been eight points clear at one stage.

The Spaniard revealed he was hoping for divine intervention in the nervy closing stages against Spurs.

    “I was praying,” he said.

“There were so many Spurs players in the box. It was a really emotional game. We had to dig in and suffer and react. I’m very pleased with the way the team has done it.”

He added: “The margins are so small. Don’t get carried away with yourself. We want to be better. There are margins for improvement. Go again against Bournemouth because it’s going to be really tough.”

Defeat for fifth-placed Tottenham dealt a huge blow to their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

They remain seven points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa, though they have two games in hand.

Liverpool were in the box seat in the title race just weeks ago but have won just one of their past five matches and Jurgen Klopp will almost certainly have to content himself with just the League Cup in his final season at Anfield.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Bournemouth beat Brighton 3-0 with goals from Marcos Senesi, Enes Unal and Justin Kluivert to set a new club Premier League points record.

Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou laments ‘disappointing day’ after loss to Arsenal

Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou made no attempt to hide his frustration after Spurs suffered a 3-2 loss to Arsenal in a North London Derby on Monday morning AEST.

The Gunners silenced the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a three-goal blast before halftime; Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s own goal put Arsenal ahead before Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz netted to leave the visitors in complete control.

Cristian Romero and Son Heung-min struck for Tottenham after the interval to set up a nervous finish, but the visitors clung on by their fingertips.

“It was a disappointing day for us,” Postecoglou told reporters in the post-match press conference.

“It was a big game, a big game for the club, for our fans. We didn’t get the outcome we wanted so obviously very disappointing.

“We wanted to win today for our supporters and for the club. We didn’t do that.”

With fourth-placed Aston Villa seven points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham, Postecoglou’s side must win their two games in hand to have any chance of staying in the race for Champions League qualification.

Postecoglou was visibly frustrated with the costly mistakes, particularly while in defence, littered through the team’s second-consecutive defeat.

“I thought our general football was good, was decent,” he continued.

“We controlled the game for long periods for the most part but we know that. We know we’re a team that can do that.

“It’s about now over the course of time getting from where we are to where we want to get to. To do that we’re still not absolutely laser focused on the details, the small things that get you from where we are to become a team that contends.

“You can’t give time and space to the opposition, you can’t make decisions or lose focus in any given moment.”

However, Postecoglou had nothing but praise for Romero, who put together an “outstanding” performance for Tottenham.

“I’ve just got to get some of what’s in him into some of the others,” Postecoglou said.

The Australian coach also vented about the VAR after Netherlands international Micky van de Ven was denied a crucial goal during the first half.

“Games are not refereed in the stadium any more,” Postecoglou said

“They are refereed somewhere else and no one will convince me otherwise. It’s not even re-refereed, it’s refereed somewhere else. That’s why I don’t celebrate goals anymore. I wait for somebody down the road.

“I just don’t think referees in the stadium any more have that authority they used to make decisions. They just go, ‘You know what, I’ll just wait and see what the bloke down the road thinks’. It’s a shame, I don’t like it but it’s here to stay and I’ve got to accept it like everyone else.”

Tottenham will next face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Friday morning AEST.

  • What seventh in the Premier League qualifies for as Villa and Spurs chase Europe

What seventh in the Premier League qualifies for as Villa and Spurs chase Europe

As the 2022/23 season comes to its conclusion, several Premier League teams are still battling for a place in the top seven.

Tottenham, Aston Villa and Brentford are among those that can end the season strongly and possibly secure European football.

    AFP

Villa’s resurgence under Unai Emery has seen them rocket up the table

And while a place in the top four is seen as the most coveted position, finishing seventh has its perks as well.

What does finishing seventh in the Premier League qualify for?

Traditionally, England’s one spot in the Europa Conference League transfers to the team that wins the Carabao Cup.

However, the 2022/23 League Cup champions, Manchester United, are guaranteed to finish in the top six, which means their European spot passes down to the sixth-placed side.

But this year, the team that finishes sixth will play in the Europa League because the FA Cup final is between Manchester City and Man United.

Both teams will finish inside the top six, meaning the one Europa Conference League spot will go to the side that ends the campaign seventh rather than sixth.

So whoever finishes seventh this year will take part in the Europa Conference League and will enter the final play-off stage.

Tottenham could still finish in the Europa League places, but it’s unlikely

Spurs won’t be in the Champions League next year but should still have some form of European football

The Conference League is UEFA’s latest competition, and next year will be just the third campaign.

English clubs have enjoyed success in the tournament so far, which should provide encouragement to the teams competing to finish seventh this year.

Last season, Leicester made it to the semi-finals, where they were beaten by eventual winners Jose Mourinho’s Roma, while West Ham are into the final this year and are one match away from European glory.

Therefore, a seventh-placed finish for Aston Villa, Brighton or Brentford would see those clubs earn European football and a chance to win some silverware next season.
