Trent defended over Real decision, huge Dibling valuation revealed, Salah boost

    Worth the big bucks

Trent Alexander-Arnold is worth at least £100million – but there will always be question marks over his future.

That’s the view of Darren Bent, who has insisted that his impending summer exit to Real Madrid will be a huge blow to Liverpool.

Commenting on his expected free transfer switch to Real, Bent said on Drive: “When it comes to contracts nowadays and the lengths of contracts, the players now have got all the power, it’s as simple as that.

“Because if Liverpool knew they were going to lose him, they would probably prefer to sell him, because Trent, for a right-back the way that he plays, he’s [worth] £100m, easy.

“So they would have liked to have got that, but unfortunately, it hasn’t worked out that way, maybe they felt they could have convinced him to stay, but it doesn’t look like they’ve managed to do that.”

He added: “He’s been absolutely outstanding, absolutely fantastic for Liverpool, but there will always be question marks about his defending.”

Bent continued: “But you’re never going to get someone who can give you that output going forward and then defensively be top level.

“It’s very rare you get someone who can produce the goods like he does, dead ball specialist, his range of passing, his crossing, everything he does with a football is wonderful.

“And then defensively be like [Paolo] Maldini, it just doesn’t happen, you’re going to have to suffer somewhere.”

  • Kimmich agrees new deal, Maresca sees James as midfielder, Spurs injury blow

Kimmich agrees new deal, Maresca sees James as midfielder, Spurs injury blow

    New role?

Enzo Maresca has revealed that he believes Reece James is a midfielder and not a defender.

James has spent his career as a right-back, right wing-back or a centre-back as part of a three-at-the-back system.

But Maresca has started to play him further forward and in a midfield role, and that’s where he played this evening.

The Chelsea captain was alongside Moises Caicedo in front of the defence, scoring in a 2-1 win against Copenhagen.

Speaking post-match about James’ new role, the Blues boss said: “We know how important he is for us.

“He’s our captain, a fantastic player. We need him fit, so that is our duty, our target because for sure he is going to help us.

“He can play in many positions because the good players can play in many positions.

“You can ask Reece, when I signed for Chelsea, the day after I sent him a video about seeing him as a midfielder.

“I see Reece as a midfielder. Since day one. I sent him a clip when he was on holiday about how he can be a midfielder.

“He has played in full-back, central defender, so the main target for us is to keep him fit.”

Maresca added: “First of all, when you watch a player you sometimes need to use imagination and imagining a player doing something.

“I watched some of his games when he was on loan at Wigan where he scored a fantastic goal from 25 or 30 metres.

“The best thing about Reece at the moment is he is helping the team with leadership.”

    Newcastle vs Brighton: Team news

We have the starting XIs in for Newcastle United versus Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup fifth round.

It’s mixed news for the hosts, who welcome Alexander Isak back up front after he sat out the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in midweek with a groin problem.

    Joelinton also returns from injury.

However, there is no Sven Botman or Lewis Hall, with the latter suffering from an ankle problem.

He is set to see a specialist to assess the severity, and the Toon will hope it’s nothing with the Carabao Cup final on the horizon.

    ‘It’s not personal’

Pep Guardiola has revealed that Kevin De Bruyne wasn’t left on the bench against Real Madrid due to injury.

The Man City boss simply made the decision to leave him out.

“Decisions,” Guardiola said at his pre-Liverpool press conference this morning. “My decision.

“Yeah, of course [he can still play in big games], he played against Madrid at home, of course he can play…”

The City manager continued: “The relationship with Kevin is exceptional. I can’t be thankful enough for what he’s done for me, the team, everyone. It’s just a decision.

“Normally I don’t speak with players, not just Kevin, on why they don’t play. They don’t ask me why when I decide to let them play from the beginning or during.

“It’s just a decision from what I’ve seen, for many reasons, a few. Never ever is it personal, never ever I’m upset.

“Also Jeremy [Doku] didn’t play and his last game was in Ipswich, played unbelievable, and after was injured.

“But maybe for the demands, the way we now need to play because of the absences or strengths that we have and physicality and many things, we need a game of more control and not up and down.

“Don’t tell me why. It’s not personal, I decide the decisions, that’s all, no more than that…”

    Bowen boost

Graham Potter believes Jarrod Bowen is ahead of schedule in his return from injury at West Ham.

The Hammers captain suffered a fractured foot in their 5-0 defeat to Liverpool at the end of 2024.

There were initial fears that Bowen could sidelined for a lengthy period of time, but there appears to be positivity over his recovery.

On Monday, Potter said: “I think if you speak to Jarrod, he will try to tell you he’s ahead of schedule, for sure.

“He’s doing everything he can to get on the pitch as soon as possible. We just need to make sure it’s in a safe way and it’s [in] a good way for him, because we want to get him back and we want him to stay back.

“But you know Jarrod, he wants to be out there, he wants to play and we’re trying to pull the reins on him rather than the other way around. He’s fantastic to have around the place.”

Potter added: “He’s just champing at the bit and he wants to get out and help. But he just has to take his medicine at the moment and just do his rehab properly.

“He was out jogging today with the individual physio, so it’s positive. I think if I’m looking at it now, Jarrod will be ahead of schedule rather than behind schedule.

“It’s not a rocket scientist prediction, that is it really.”
