Two stalwarts of the Cricket Tasmania Premier League will notch up significant milestones this Saturday when Clarence hosts University at Kangaroo Bay.
Two stalwarts of the Cricket Tasmania Premier League (CTPL) will notch up significant milestones this Saturday when Clarence hosts University at Kangaroo Bay.
Roos playing-coach Harry Allanby and captain Michael Jones will both don the whites for game 250 as the Roos look to celebrate the milestone with an upset win over the ladder-leading Lions.
“To reach 250 in the same game is pretty special,” Allanby said.
“We have played together since we were 15 or 16, won a couple of flags together and are really close mates so hopefully it’s a really good day for the club.”
One of the CTPL’s most highly-celebrated players, Allanby is a former two-time Emerson Rodwell Medal winner with the veteran being judged the men’s first grade player of the season in both 2017-18 (with Caleb Jewell) and 2018-19.
The all-rounder has amassed 5,269 runs and taken 299 wickets thus far in his CTPL career, and has also been a part of four premierships for the Roos; the two-day premierships in 2011-12 and 2017-18, and the one-day flags in 2011-12 and 2016-17.
Jones has had just as big an impact on the premier league since making the move from the state’s north as an 18-year-old.
The Roos captain has gone onto score 5,575 runs and holds the title of the competition’s second most successful wicketkeeper in history, totalling 390 dismissals to date.
Recognised as the competition’s best keeper in five of the last nine seasons, the three-time premiership player says the club has given him much more than just on-field accolades.
“I came down from South Launceston and this club has just treated me like a family,” Jones said.
“I’m really thankful for this cricket club, they have taught me a few good life lessons along the way.”
The Roos will welcome back paceman Riley Meredith with the Tasmanian Tigers quick rested for Shield duties while the Lions will be without captain Tim Paine, opener Tim Ward and Jake Doran for the match.
Paine and Ward will be on state duties in Sydney while Doran is unavailable through injury with the gloveman recovering from split webbing in his fingers.
In other round 26 games, second-place Lindisfarne will travel to Queenborough Oval to face South Hobart-Sandy Bay without skipper Charlie Wakim with ‘Chuck’ named in the Tigers 12-man squad for the first time this season.
Leading competition runs scorer Mac Wright will take the reigns against the Sharks who will also be without spinner Jarrod Freeman and quick Nathan Ellis.
Kingborough will host North Hobart at the Twin Ovals and New Town will head to KGV to face Glenorchy in a must-win clash for the Bucks.
West Midlands Police appeared to have aimed a cheeky dig at Manchester City when offering advice to Aston Villa fans at the Etihad Stadium.
The force’s Twitter account, which offers information and updates to fans attending Villa matches, appeared to mock the attendance figures at City’s home, calling it ‘the Emptihad’ ahead of Sunday’s clash.
Getty
The Etihad most certainly won’t be empty come Sunday afternoon but that won’t stop some making the joke
The tweet read: “#avfc #utv fans travelling 2 the Emptihad on Sunday there r no pubs around the ground happy 2 accept away fans.
“Away fans travelling via train will b welcome in Brunswick, Piccadilly Tavern and the Waldorf in the city centre. Advice 4 those travelling via coach and car, stop en route!”
This isn’t the first time City have been teased for their attendance during home matches, former Liverpool defender and co-commentator Jim Belgin issued an apology on social media for using a term during a City match.
Beglin had said: “You can hear the annoyance around the Emptihad’ during a game between City and Chelsea.”
He then wrote: “I have the greatest respect for Manchester City Football Club. In no way was my verbal error today intended to cause City fans any offence.”
Matildas captain Sam Kerr put on a one-woman show to send Chelsea to the English League Cup final, scoring four times as she prepares to head home to lead Australia in the Cup of Nations.
Kerr was unstoppable in a 7-0 demolition of hapless West Ham, scoring her sixth hat-trick for Chelsea, all in the first half, then adding a fourth for good measure.

It took her season haul to 20 goals for Chelsea across all competitions, the most of any player.
The result also sets up a Cup final clash against Arsenal and Matildas teammates Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley on March 5.
Kerr opened her account in just the third minute with a tidy first-time finish from a perfectly-timed ball from Chelsea teammate Guro Reiten.
The Aussie’s second of the game was perhaps the sweetest strike of the lot.

Kerr, who was positioned perfectly to receive the ball from the resulting tackle, spun around and brought the ball on to her right peg before unleashing an unstoppable strike in the 22nd minute.
She then completed her hat-trick after showing her unrivalled anticipation skills to latch onto a through ball before coolly slotting home to score Chelsea’s fourth of the game.
Kerr then made it four goals for herself in the 60th minute.
It bodes well for the Matildas who will take on Spain, Jamaica and the Czech Republic in the Cup of Nations from next Thursday, with games in Gosford, Sydney and Newcastle.
The series is key preparation for the FIFA World Cup being held in Australia in June and July.
Jadon Sancho’s first goal since September denied managerless Leeds a famous win at Old Trafford as Manchester United came from 2-0 down to salvage a 2-2 draw on Wednesday.
Sancho has been sidelined for much of the season by fitness issues, but came off the bench to rescue a point and stretch United’s unbeaten run at home to 16 games.
Leeds sacked Jesse Marsch on Monday following a run of seven league games without a win.
Caretaker manager Michael Skubala had just one 20-minute training session to prepare for the trip across The Pennines, but they had been on course for a first victory over United since 2010.
Leeds shock Man Utd in 55 seconds | 00:45
Wilfried Gnonto gave the visitors the perfect start after just a minute and Raphael Varane’s own goal doubled their advantage early in the second half.
Marcus Rashford’s 20th goal of the season sparked the United fightback before Sancho equalised.
A point leaves third-placed United still seven points adrift of leaders Arsenal, having played two games more.
The draw is more valuable to Leeds, who edge one point clear of the relegation zone.
Gnonto has been a consistent bright spark of an otherwise sad season for Leeds and exploded the game into life after just 60 seconds as he found the bottom corner for his fourth goal in seven games.
United badly missed the presence of the suspended Casemiro in midfield, which allowed Leeds to counter-attack at will.
Pascal Struijk could have doubled their lead inside 12 minutes as David De Gea was forced into a save from point-blank range to deny the Dutch defender.
But the losses of Luis Sinisterra to injury and Struijk due to concussion halted Leeds’ momentum and they ended up clinging onto their lead before halftime.
Alejandro Garnacho fired just wide and then saw a shot cleared off the line by Max Woeber after the Argentine had rounded Illan Meslier.

However, United were slow out of the blocks after the break and were punished. Gnonto was at the heart of the move again as he released Crysencio Summerville down the left and his cross was turned into his own net by Raphael Varane.
Erik ten Hag turned to his bench for solutions and found them in Sancho and Facundo Pellistri to replace the ineffectual Wout Weghorst and Garnacho.
Weghorst’s withdrawal put Rashford through the middle and within minutes he rose highest to meet Diogo Dalot’s cross for his 12th goal in 14 games since the World Cup.
Leeds were inches away from restoring their two-goal lead almost immediately when Brenden Aaronson’s free-kick came back off the post.

But their advantage was soon wiped out completely 20 minutes from time. Sancho’s return to action has been a timely boost with United still involved in four competitions and short on attacking options.
The England international collected Luke Shaw’s deflected cross and his low strike caught out Meslier low to his left.
United then laid siege to the Leeds goal in search of a winner. Meslier redeemed himself with a fine save to tip over a Varane header and Bruno Fernandes twice fired off target as United failed to complete the comeback.
Manchester United have been told to ‘forget about the title’ while Erik ten Hag slammed his side’s ‘unacceptable’ start against Leeds.
The match at Old Trafford finished 2-2 after the home side had to fight back from two goals down, having been caught cold at the start of each half.

The same mistakes were repeated at the start of the second half for Man United
Wilfried Gnonto scored after 55 seconds to stun the home crowd, and less than three minutes after the half-time break they doubled their lead when Raphael Varane deflected in a Crysencio Summerville pass.
Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho later both found the net to take a point from the game, but it was little comfort for manager Ten Hag, as he told talkSPORT.
“Very poor [starts to each half] and it’s unacceptable to start any game,” he said.
“Especially a derby in the way that we did, you are down and have to fight back.
“We made big mistakes and it has to do with attitude, we are not ready to go into the duels, we lose the duels, the formation was also bad when we lost the ball, we didn’t follow our principles and we were quickly down.
“We had a warning in the first half and second half it was the same.”

Atsu, who has three kids with wife Marie-Claire, plays for Hatayspor, who he joined last summer.
The earthquake hit hard in Kahramanmaras, where Hatayspor are based.
Video showed rescuers with search lights sifting through the wreckage of his apartment block during the night, The Sun reports.

According to local media reports, Atsu’s voice was heard in the rubble, along with that of Hatayspor’s Sporting Director Taner Savut.
Hatayspor spokesman Mustafa Ozat reportedly said: “Christian Atsu was taken out with injuries.
“Our sporting director, Taner Savut, is unfortunately still under the rubble.”
Ghana’s ambassador to Turkey, Francisca Ashitey-Odunton, said she’s received information from the country’s football authorities that Atsu “has been found”.
Several of his teammates were dramatically rescued from their homes after the earthquake struck at 4am local time.
Just hours before the quake struck Atsu scored deep into stoppage time on Saturday to secure a 1-0 win over Kasimpasa.

“Important win for the team. Happy to be on the scoresheet,” he tweeted.
Footage showed Atsu being mobbed by his teammates as ecstatic fans celebrated the win, along with messages praying for him to be found.
Newcastle and Chelsea were earlier anxiously awaiting news of their former player.
A post on Newcastle’s official Twitter account said: “Praying for some positive news, @ChristianAtsu20.”
While Chelsea tweeted: “We’re praying for you, Christian Atsu.”
Atsu joined Chelsea from Porto for £3.5million in 2013 but didn’t make a single appearance for the Premier League giants.
Atsu took in loans at Vitesse, Everton, Bournemouth, Malaga and Newcastle.
And the Magpies made his deal permanent in 2017 after Atsu played a key role in their promotion from the Championship.

The ace ended up making 86 appearances for Newcastle before joining Al-Raed in 2021.
Atsu moved to Hatayspor last summer and has one goal in four games.
Up to 10,000 are feared dead, including many children, after two “once-in-a-century” earthquakes rocked Turkey and Syria today.
A massive 7.8 magnitude shock – one of the biggest for 100 years – was followed hours later by another huge 7.5 magnitude quake.
Frantic survivors used their bare hands to dig through the rubble of flattened homes and were filmed pulling children to safety amid scenes of utter destruction. The twin earthquakes also sparked tsunami alerts on Mediterranean coasts in Greece, Cyprus and Italy, and shaking was felt as far away as Egypt and Iran.

According to Turkish news outlet Star, Atsu – along with club sporting director Taner Savut – were caught up in the natural disaster in Kahramanmaras, where Hatayspor are based.
They have stated that two players from Hatayspor – Burak Oksuz and Bertug Yildirim – were rescued from the rubble.
And two members of the technical team – Ekrem Eksioglu and Osman Ates – also survived the wreckage with their health said to be good.
Portuguese outlet A Bola reported on Monday evening that Atsu has been ‘found alive’ but is in hospital with injuries to his right foot and with breathing difficulties.
The report adds that Atsu’s teammates Onur Ergun and Burak Oksuz were also found alive by rescue teams and Portuguese Hatayspor players Ruben Ribeiro and Cape Verdean Ze Luís are safe. Meanwhile, Hatayspor defender Kerim Alici got out of the rubble himself.
There has not been any confirmation on Atsu’s health or whereabouts from his club or from Turkish media.

Leeds sack Marsch and eye Corberan, ‘surprised’ Man City could face top-flight expulsion
Man City have been hit with more than 100 charges of alleged breaches of financial rules, which could lead to a points deduction or even expulsion from the Premier League.
It follows a four-year investigation by the Premier League into the finances of the Manchester club.

City have been charged by the Premier League over their finances
The Premier League released a statement on Monday morning, with the allegations dating back to the 2009/10 season right through to the 2017/18 campaign.
A range of penalties could be levied at Man City should they be found guilty of the charges, including a points penalty or even expulsion.
The club issued a robust statement in the wake of the charges.
It read: “Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.
“The club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position.
“As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”
City are alleged to have breached league rules requiring provision ‘in utmost good faith’ of ‘accurate financial information that gives a true and fair view of the club’s financial position’.
The Premier League says the accurate financial information required related to ‘revenue (including sponsorship revenue), its related parties and its operating costs’.
The second set of breaches relate to alleged breaking of rules ‘requiring a member club to include full details of manager remuneration in its relevant contracts with its manager’. This is related to seasons 2009/10 to 2012/13, when Roberto Mancini was in charge.
These breaches also refers to requirements for a club to include full details of player remuneration within the relevant contracts, for the seasons 2010/11 to 2015/16 inclusive.
There are also alleged breaches that relate to failure to comply with UEFA Financial Fair Play regulations, which relates from 2013/14 to 2017/18.

Questions have been long been raised about Man City’s finances
Leeds sack Marsch and eye Corberan, ‘surprised’ Man City could face top-flight expulsion
“This confirmation is made in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1. The Premier League will be making no further comment in respect of this matter until further notice.”
According to The Times’ Martyn Ziegler, City would not be able to appeal any sanction to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Reacting to the news, former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan told talkSPORT: “One must remember these are charges and they have to be answered by Manchester City.
“Pep started sowing the seeds, as they obviously knew this was coming, by suggesting there were X amount of clubs in the Premier League that wanted Man City banned.
“When we heard Pep saying that last week we were wondering ‘why were you bringing this up’, now this is the reason why.
“Man City have these allegations and charges to answer. I didn’t think the Premier League would have the balls to do this and having the balls to make it stick is another matter.
“I have always maintained they have significant questions to answer and this idea that people are xenophobic or have an issue because the ownership model is not one people like because of its ethnicity or persuasion is nonsense.
“It’s about the idea that there is an element of financial doping. By that I mean they have been using businesses they own to artificially inflate sponsorship deals that have given them an opportunity to fall within that confines of Financial Fair Play.

This time last year, Liverpool were dominating just about every opponent they faced in the Premier League as they scored goals for fun and proved to be a brick wall at the back.
Fast forward to today and Jurgen Klopp’s side are unrecognisable in the worst ways possible.

Liverpool are rock bottom of the Premier League this calendar year, with one draw and four defeats.
In fact, the Reds’ seven defeats this season is half the amount of losses over the previous three seasons combined.
Not only that, but their defensive record has sunk to an embarrassing 30-year low.
28 goals conceded is the most Liverpool have shipped in their first 20 games of the season since the 1992/93 campaign.
As the storm rages around Anfield, Klopp remains stuck in the eye of it in his baseball cap and jacket wondering how on earth he can mastermind a revival.
But, as many pundits and reporters in England have noted, the chances of injecting some much-needed CPR into the Reds’ campaign are slimming with each game.
It took just 12 minutes for Liverpool to find themselves up against the wall at Molineux on the weekend, as Wolves raced out to an early 2-0 lead courtesy of an own goal from Joel Matip as well as a debut goal for new signing Craig Dawson.
Although Klopp’s side threatened early in the second half, those hopes were quashed when Wolves skipper Ruben Neves scored his side’s third of the day, even if the German boss bizarrely refused to acknowledge it.
But one of the biggest takeaways from the Reds’ performance was the nightmare display from the centre-back pairing of Matip and Joe Gomez which, in turn, highlighted the vital importance of star defender Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher aired his take on Matip and Gomez’s showing on Twitter and didn’t hold back.
“It’s not too difficult to play centre back next to the leader of the back four, judge CB’s when they have to lead themselves,” Carragher wrote.
“Shambolic.”

What makes Carragher’s statement all the more damning is Liverpool’s record with and without van Dijk in the side.
When the Dutch colossus is on the park, Liverpool have won 105 from 146 games for a 71 per cent win rate.
Without van Dijk, the Reds have won 23 from 43 games (53 per cent).
It wasn’t just the “shambolic” display from Matip and Gomez that had another legend of the game irate.
Rather, it was the significant lack of application from the entire team — a hallmark of Klopp’s Liverpool — that had former Premier League winner Alan Shearer up in arms.
“You can moan about players being physically and mentally tired, because of what happened last season.
“But, that today, wasn’t acceptable, in that first half. As I said earlier, they should have been four or five nil down because of their lack of effort.
“And when the players get home tonight and look in the mirror and say, ‘Have I given enough?’, there’s not one of them that can say that today about that performance.”

With such a horrendous drop-off in form this season, questions have inevitably been asked of the mastermind behind Liverpool’s transformation since he moved to Anfield in 2015.
Klopp has provided bucketloads of charm and charisma throughout his seven-and-a-half-year tenure with the Reds and has delivered several trophies throughout, including a coveted Premier League title in the 2019/20 season.
Wallace described Klopp as “someone bereft of ideas, of explanation, of resolve” during a spicy post-match press conference in which he took aim at a reporter for a valid question about Liverpool’s mentality going into games.
Arsenal great Paul Merson shared Wallace’s view but also sympathised with Klopp as the German had a front-row view of the catastrophe unfolding in front of his very eyes.
“I don’t like the word lost, he’s not lost. But I don’t think he knows what else to do now.
“He’s watching this team and it is a million, million miles off of where they were last year. A million miles off.”
Klopp has cut an increasingly frustrated figure this season. (Photo by Clive Mason/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images
With all of the talk about Klopp cutting a forlorn figure in the dugout, perhaps it gives some validation to the seven-year syndrome claim several have made about the boss.
In his previous two managerial gigs, things began to unravel for Klopp in his seventh full season at Bundesliga clubs Mainz and Borussia Dortmund.
Klopp failed to guide Mainz back to the Bundesliga having been relegated the season before while at Dortmund, the club was in the relegation zone at Christmas but eventually finished seventh.
Now, in his seventh full season at Anfield, the wheels have well and truly come off the Liverpool wagon as the club are firmly on track for their worst season under Klopp’s watch.
Although the Wolves faithful cheekily chanted “you’re getting sacked in the morning” in Klopp’s direction during the 3-0 loss, it’s extremely unlikely Klopp is given his marching orders any time soon.
And with 18 Premier League fixtures left on the board, there’s every chance the 55-year-old can turn things around.
But given the catastrophic downturn in fortunes this season, a significant portion of the irreversible damage has been done.
A lot has changed in the six years since Charlie Wakim made the move from New South Wales to Tasmania but he couldn’t be happier with how life has panned out. See his story.
A lot has changed in the six years since Charlie Wakim made the move from New South Wales to Tasmania but the 31-year-old couldn’t be happier with how life in the Apple Isle has panned out.
The Tasmanian Tigers contracted batter has had as busy a time off the field as he has had off it the last few years.
He married partner Georgia in 2021, the same year he ventured into the business world with Pino and Picasso Hobart and Launceston alongside fellow Tigers Jordan Silk and Jackson Bird.
All this was before becoming a dad to Freddie in 2022.
“It does feel like home now,” Wakim told The Mercury.
“We’ve brought a place, myself and my wife, and now we have a one-year old who is a fully fledged ‘Taswegian’ so we love Tasmania.”
“Being a dad is the best thing ever. It’s challenging at times but it’s always worth it. It really does put things into perspective, as cliche as that sounds. You start to question why you get so angry at things on the cricket field when you walk back through the front door at home and you’ve got a couple of people that love you no matter what.”
Overlooked in the pathways system as a teenager, Wakim completed a commerce degree at the University of New South Wales before a call from former Cricket Tasmania CEO Nick Cummins in 2017 with a two-year contract offer saw him pack up his life and make the move to Tasmania.
Wakim made an instant impact, scoring a century on his first-class debut for Tasmania in 2018 and while six more half centuries have followed, he hasn’t been able to crack into the Shield side this season.
That’s despite some strong performances in the Cricket Tasmania Premier League (CTPL) for Lindisfarne and for Tasmania’s Second XI side.
The Lightning captain has scored 653 runs with three rounds to play and currently sits third only behind teammate Mac Wright (804) and New Town captain Mitch Owen (796) for runs scored in 2022/23.
“I had a terrible start to the season and couldn’t buy a run but plugged away and found a bit of form after Christmas in the T20s and I was able to string a few scores together which is good,” Wakim said.
“The team is doing really well. We unfortunately lost the T20 grand final but managed to scrape our way into the one-day final and are sitting pretty good in second place in the two-day format.
“We’ve had a couple of Tasmanian representatives have good availability for us this year with Mac Wright and Jarrod Freeman. Those two boys are obviously a huge part of our squad and play massive roles for us. But also the young guys coming through, one is Keegan Oates, who are doing really well.
“I think you just have to keep putting performances on the board in second eleven and premier league and hopefully there is an opportunity that comes my way. That hasn’t come quite yet this season but I’ve just got to stay ready if and when that comes and hopefully just keep banging the door and make the decision for the coaches (in a sense).”
Wakim doesn’t have much time to worry about those decisions off-field though with his paint and sip business keeping him busy when he’s not scoring runs.
“It’s just another avenue to switch off your cricket brain and try and focus on something else,” Wakim said.
“It’s an exciting little chapter in our lives and it’s cool to be able to work with people that you are familiar with in the cricket world and see how they operate in the business space.
“With professional sport and cricket you can only physically train a certain amount of hours a day so you end up with a bit of downtime and I think it’s healthy to fill those hours with something productive so Cricket Tasmania certainly support that for a lot of guys.
“Cricket isn’t forever so it’s really important to upskill in other areas of life.”
While the busy batter may have now ticked over the 30-mark, he says arriving to the professional scene in his mid-twenties has him feeling like there is still a lot of petrol left in the tank.
