Having grown up in Los Angeles, Meghan Markle has certainly been filled with a variety of emotions while watching her hometown battle recent wildfires.
Now living in Montecito with her husband Prince Harry, the 43-year-old was even recently spotted visiting her elementary school, Hollywood Little Red Schoolhouse, during her Netflix docuseries ‘Harry & Meghan’.
While living in LA her father, Thomas Markle, worked in show business as a television lighting director and director of photography. His work landed him several Emmy Awards, and Meghan has often talked about visiting sets with him.
She remains connected to LA despite living in Montecito, and has taken part in several charitable activities with her hometown over the years.
That has continued as wildfires have ravaged Los Angeles in recent days. The destruction is there for all to see, as the fires have burned almost 14,000 acres, with estimates suggesting around 4,000 to 5,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed. It’s also killed 16 people.
As a result the Sussexes have stepped up to help with the relief efforts, donating through the Archewell Foundation. They’ve also opened their $29 million Montecito mansion to loved ones who were forced to evacuate their homes due to the fire.
Harry and Meghan share their thoughts
The couple shared a statement on the fires a few days ago. In it they urged on people to check in on disabled and elderly neighbors.
“In the last few days, wildfires in Southern California have raged through neighborhoods and devastated families, homes, schools, medical care centers, and so much more – affecting tens of thousands from all walks of life,” they wrote on Sussex.com
“A state of emergency has been issued. If you feel compelled to help, here are some resources and ideas.
“If a friend, loved one, or pet has to evacuate and you are able to offer them a safe haven in your home, please do. And be sure to check in with any disabled or elderly neighbors to see if they need help evacuating.
“Some families and people have been left with nothing. Please consider donating clothing, children’s toys & clothing, and other essentials. The American Red Cross is on the ground helping those in need.”
