‘F***ing insane’: PL fairytale the real deal as Reds silenced; 10-min disaster rocks City — Wrap

Nottingham Forest’s fairytale Premier League season took another big step on Tuesday when the former European champions secured a draw over league leaders Liverpool at home.

Liverpool dominated the night at the City Ground but was still forced to come from behind to settle for a draw after New Zealand striker Chris Wood put Forest in front after eight minutes.

His strike came against the run of play and took his remarkable season tally to 13 goals in 21 games.

Forest still dreamt of clinching a miraculous win well into the second half, until Diogo Jota — who had been on the field for just 22 seconds — nodded home for Liverpool from a corner.

Jota continued to make an impact, and Liverpool kept Forest under siege, but the underdogs escaped with a point to delight the home crowd.

Liverpool remains six points clear of anyone on the Premier League table.

The result also keeps Forest in second-place after 21 games, one point ahead of Arsenal, and three ahead of Chelsea, who needed a 95th minute goal from Reece James to save a draw at home to Bournemouth.

Title rivals Manchester City, meanwhile, missed the major opportunity to close the gap by coughing up a 2-0 lead to Brentford, who stunned the champions late with 82nd and 92nd goals from Yoane Wissa and Christian Norgaard.

The biggest result of the night, however, belonged to Forest whose redemption in England’s top flight continues to gather steam.

Their fairytale run has been spearheaded by a career year from striker Wood, the 33-year-old Kiwi who has been among the Premier League’s most prolific goal scorers this season.

Sky Sports’ Paul Merson noted that the City Ground “erupted” when Wood scored against the run of play.

“Forest hadn’t been out of their half in the first eight minutes. I cannot believe they are 1-0 up. They had been ripped to shreds,” he noted.

Clinton Morrison, former Republic of Ireland striker, said on the BBC: “This is why Forest are good. You don’t see them for the first five minutes and then they hit.”

Forest’s remarkable run of six successive league wins prior to Liverpool’s visit had sparked claims they could emulate Leicester’s fairytale title triumph in 2016.

This impressive performance suggested that dream should not be completely discounted, even if Liverpool remain firm favourites.

Earlier this month, Forest marked the 50th anniversary of Brian Clough’s appointment, which triggered the club’s incredible rise from the second tier to English champions in 1978 and European Cup winners in 1979 and 1980.

    – Inspired Sels –

Back then, Forest and Liverpool were England’s pre-eminent forces, jousting for domestic and continental silverware on a regular basis.

For the first time since 1979, Liverpool and Forest were meeting with both teams in the top three and the retro feel was palpable on the banks of the River Trent.

Forest fans, red and white scarves twirling in the raucous atmosphere, had barely finished a stirring pre-match rendition of Mull of Kintyre before their team delivered a statement of intent that could easily have come from the Clough era.

Forest have proved lethal on the counter-attack this season and they caught Liverpool with a punishing sucker-punch from their first attack in the eighth minute.

Anthony Elanga’s pin-point pass caught Virgil van Dijk flat-footed as Wood ran in behind the Liverpool defender.

Keeping his composure, Wood slotted a clinical finish under Alisson Becker. Slot’s men dominated possession after that but struggled to break down a resolute Forest defence well marshalled by Serbian centre-back Nikola Milenkovic.

Milenkovic and Murillo had stopped Liverpool mustering a shot on target in the first half as Mohamed Salah was held in check.

Liverpool drew level after a rare slip from Nuno’s defence in the 66th minute. Kostas Tsimikas’s corner looped into penalty area and Jota, one of the smallest players on the pitch, was given space to glance his header past Sels from five yards.

It was an inspired substitution from Slot, who had sent on Jota and Tsimikas just 22 seconds earlier.

Jota almost struck again, weaving through the Forest defence before Sels made a fine save to deny the Portugal forward.

Sels produced an even better stop moments later, throwing himself in front of Jota’s powerful close-range strike.

In a frantic finale, Dominik Szoboszlai’s blast forced another good save from Sels, while Salah’s curler was tipped over by the inspired Forest keeper.

There was nearly a dramatic winner for Liverpool but Salah’s shot was cleared off the line by Ola Aina before Sels clawed Cody Gakpo’s shot to safety.

MAN CITY BLOW LATE LEAD AT BRENTFORD, CHELSEA HELD BY BOURNEMOUTH

Manchester City’s upturn came undone as Brentford hit back to draw 2-2 on Tuesday, while Chelsea were also held by the same scoreline at home by Bournemouth.

Phil Foden’s double had City on course for a fourth consecutive win after a run of just one victory in 13 games.

However, the English champions’ defending was not convincing all night and they were punished as Yoane Wissa and Christian Norgaard struck in the final 10 minutes to earn Brentford a point.

Foden’s return to the form that saw him crowned Premier League player of the year last season was the one positive for City.

But Pep Guardiola will reflect on a missed opportunity to make up ground on the top four.

A point leaves City still down in sixth.

Erling Haaland and Savinho struck the woodwork for City either side of half-time.

However, Brentford were a constant threat on the counter-attack and only a brilliant last ditch tackle from Josko Gvardiol denied Wissa the opener for the home side.

Moments later, Foden produced a brilliant deft touch from Kevin De Bruyne’s inviting delivery to score for just the third time in the Premier League this season.

Brentford then saw a host of chances to level come and go before City punished them with a sucker punch.

Savinho’s powerful effort was parried by Mark Flekken into the path of Foden, who smashed in his fourth goal in five league games.

Brentford did finally get some reward for their attacking endeavour when Wissa slotted in from Mads Roerslev’s cross to become the club’s all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League.

And they completed the comeback in stoppage time when Norgaard’s header had too much power for Stefan Ortega.

    – Reece rescues Chelsea –

Chelsea’s miserable run extended to five league games without a win but they were grateful for captain Reece James’ stoppage-time equaliser salvaging a point for them against the Cherries.

Cole Palmer’s cool finish from Nicolas Jackson’s through ball had given Chelsea the perfect start.

But Bournemouth hit back despite losing both their strikers Evanilson and Enes Unal to long-term injuries.

Justin Kluivert levelled from the penalty spot, before Antoine Semenyo’s blistering near-post effort put the visitors in front.

James has endured another injury-hit season but showed the quality he possesses by curling home a free-kick at the death.

West Ham boss Graham Potter enjoyed a winning home debut as Fulham were beaten 3-2 at the London Stadium.

The Hammers shrugged off an injury crisis in attacking areas to score twice in two first-half minutes.

Carlos Soler pounced on a wayward pass by Andreas Pereira to sweep in the opener before Tomas Soucek fired in from Aaron Wan Bissaka’s cross.

Alex Iwobi’s intended cross evaded everyone on its way in at the start of the second half to give Fulham hope.

Lucas Paqueta restored West Ham’s two-goal cushion to take Potter’s men above Manchester United and Tottenham into 12th.

Iwobi pulled another goal back for Fulham, but defeat leaves them still in ninth.

‘Fortune favoured the brave’: Why Ange’s refusal to change proved ‘something is stirring’ at Spurs — UK View

Prior to his team’s fixture against Manchester City, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou was asked by a reporter if he would stick to his gung-ho style of play against the defending Premier League champions.

“If you had to take a punt, what do you reckon I’d say?” Postecoglou responded.

The Tottenham boss elaborated and stated if you want to win, you must have a plan and “stick to it and believe in it.”

It was a fair question from the reporter given Tottenham are ravaged by injuries and went into the City clash on the back of three consecutive losses.

Unsurprisingly, Postecoglou stuck to his word and implored his players to take the game to the hosts.

Tottenham rode their luck in the first half and were fortunate not to be completely out of the contest as the score read 2-1 to City courtesy of a Heung-Min Son own goal and Phil Foden.

Postecoglou implored his troops to show more “conviction” in the second half and that message, coupled with the introduction of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, proved pivotal.

The players heeded the message as Giovani Lo Celso and Dejan Kulusevski scored either side of a late Jack Grealish goal to secure a point.

Not only did the draw continue City’s wretched run of form against Tottenham — they have won just twice in their last eight Premier League encounters — but it proved Postecoglou’s unwavering tactical approach was the right call.

“A defeat here would have been a fourth in a row for Postecoglou but, despite the circumstances, despite the mitigation he could have turned to, that others would have turned to, he did not change,” The Telegraph’s Jason Burt wrote.

‘I’ll take the responsibility’: Ange’s selfless HT message behind stunning Spurs turnaround

“Not a bit. And with that fortune favoured the brave.

“The Premier League, and not just Spurs, is lucky to have him.

“This is what football is all about. This is why we love the game. Pep Guardiola will not change either and more power to the pair of them.”

Burt added: “He was never going to abandon ultimate gain for short-term damage limitation because what message would that send to the club and the players? No, it is his way or no way.”

The fact Tottenham were even able to come away with something from the contest had The Guardian’s Barney Ronay believing the result “will have felt like a kind of victory in itself.”

“This was a breezy, while at times deeply confusing, game of football; but a game that will, above all, have felt like a kind of vindication for Ange Postecoglou,” Ronay wrote.

“Tottenham Hotspur really, really shouldn’t have been able to come away from this injury-ravaged trip to the champions of Europe with a point, certainly not after falling behind twice; and even more certainly not after playing in the first half like a team intent on walking the opposition backwards into their own goal.

“And yes, the points were shared from a 3-3 draw that could, with better Manchester City finishing, have gone the other way quite dramatically.

“But the performance will stand as the most satisfying moment of Postecoglou’s time as Tottenham manager to date; and as confirmation in spirit, discipline and the boldness of his tactics, that something really is stirring here.”

‘Shocking call!’: City ROBBED of winner? | 00:40

Former England international Chris Sutton also threw his support behind Postecoglou for his willingness to stick to his guns.

“All the jabs from pundits and commentators about Tottenham and their naive brand of football … everyone is entitled to their opinion but it’s refreshing someone going up against Manchester City and showing some balls and belief,” Sutton wrote on X.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was another who voiced his backing for the Tottenham manager.

He also believed the fact the players were able to complete the late comeback against a team of City’s might could be a pivotal moment that reinforces belief in players that Postecoglou’s methods work, if they aren’t already convinced.

“Ange Postecoglou deserves credit, and not just today,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“The run they’ve been on, they’ve been very unlucky.

“I think Spurs have always been a top team in terms of trying to challenge for top four. I don’t think Spurs are going to be in any sort of title race or anything like that.

‘Belief in ourselves’ Spurs bounce back | 00:58

“The important thing is the manager said before the game that people were going to question their set-up today. It’s not about today, this is about the long-term in the next two or three years to make Spurs the real deal.

“He’s not going to change anything, he’s trying to instil something within the club. He got the payback in the second half.

“Son said the manager told them to play even more. They were a lot better in the second half.”

Postecoglou is set to be handed a major boost ahead of Friday’s clash against West Ham United as centre back Cristian Romero returns from suspension.

Senegalese midfielder Pape Matar Sarr could also return to the squad by the end of the week, while Richarlison got some much-needed game time late in the clash against City.

Although a number of players are slowly returning, Postecoglou is not completely out of the storm just yet as the likes of James Maddison and Micky van de Ven remain sidelined until the new year.

Until then, Postecoglou will charge head on through the rough waters because, as Tottenham’s recent stretch of games has shown, it’s all he knows.

WBBL draft guide: Sophie’s choice which could decide title

There will be no more important decision this season for the Sydney Thunder than striking gold in the international player draft and with some of the world’s best cricketers in the platinum player pool, all eyes will be on who they select with pick No.1.

While the WBBL draft is slightly different than the men’s BBL draft in that some international players have opted to sign directly with clubs for reduced fees, there are still several English, Indian and New Zealand superstars on the market.

FULL BBL DRAFT PREVIEW: WHO WILL EVERY CLUB TAKE?

Suzie Bates, Tammy Beaumont, Sophia Dunkley, Amy Jones, Mignon du Preez and Lizelle Lee are the biggest names to select the direct entry to clubs away from the draft, so all eyes will be on the team from the west who have the biggest retention decision to make.

The Scorchers have enjoyed much success with Kiwi Sophie Devine while South African Marizanne Kapp has also been a proven star. It’s unlikely Perth will retain both so the decision on who the Scorchers use their retention pick on could shape the entire draft.

Here’s how your WBBL club is shaping up ahead of Sunday’s all-important player draft.

    ADELAIDE STRIKERS

    Finish last year: 2nd (Champions)

    Draft picks: 8, 16, 17, 32

Current Squad: Tahlia McGrath (capt), Jemma Barsby, Darcie Brown, Katie Mack, Annie O’Neil, Maddie Penna, Megan Schutt, Amanda-Jade Wellington

The one player they must draft:

Laura Wolvaardt (South Africa) The dynamic opening batter continues to impress on the international stage and appears to be the obvious use of the retention pick by the Strikers. She scored the third-most runs in WBBL08 even though she wasn’t quite at her best, but was integral in their efforts to go all the way and win the title.

What they really need to achieve at the draft:

Spin became a really important part of the equation for the Strikers last year and the combination of Wellington and Barsby was key. Deandra Dottin would likely return after she impressed with both bat and ball. The retirement of Tegan McPharlin means the need for a keeper jumps out, so India’s Richa Ghosh would be a strong option who doubles as an aggressive batter.

    BRISBANE HEAT

    Finish last year: 3rd

    Draft picks: 6, 14, 19 and 30

Current Squad: Nicola Hancock, Grace Harris, Laura Harris, Mikayla Hinkley, Ellie Johnston, Jess Jonassen, Charli Knott, Grace Parsons, Georgia Redmayne, Courtney Sippel, Georgia Voll. (one contract spot to fill)

The one player they must draft:

Amelia Kerr. The Kiwi allrounder is in her prime as a player. Bats in the top five and is a wicket-taker and run-stopper.

What they really need to achieve at the draft:

Another solid batting option, either at the top or in the middle order. Danni Wyatt was just what they wanted last year but she may be hard to land this time after her UK summer efforts. A pace bowling allrounder would certainly complement their attack as well.

    HOBART HURRICANES

    Finish last year: 4th

    Draft picks: 5, 13, 20, 29

Current Squad: Nicola Carey, Maisy Gibson, Heather Graham, Ruth Johnston, Hayley Silver-Holmes, Amy Smith, Molly Strano, Rachel Trenaman, Elyse Villani

The one player they must draft:

Pakistan off-spinning allrounder Nita Dar or someone else who can shine in both skills.

What they really need to achieve at the draft:

A bowler who can bowl across all three phases of an innings, and a batter with a high strike rate to allow our current talent to play their natural style.

    PERTH SCORCHERS

    Finish last year: 5th

    Draft picks: 3, 11, 22, 27

Current Squad: Charis Bekker, Mathilda Carmichael, Piepa Cleary, Maddy Darke, Amy Edgar, Holly Ferling, Maddy Green, Alana King, Lilly Mills, Beth Mooney, Taneale Peschel, Chloe Piparo, Georgia Wyllie

The one player they must draft:

Marizanne Kapp (South Africa) It’s the “decision that’s kept us up at night” according to Perth’s general manager of high performance, Kade Harvey. With one retention pick, do you go for Sophie Devine or Marizanne Kapp? Devine has been the club’s captain, but Kapp’s performances have arguably been stronger in the past 12 months. “It’s a pretty brutal choice we’ll have to make,” Harvey went on to say. Based solely on form, Kapp makes the most sense. But time will tell.

What they really need to achieve at the draft:

The Scorchers just need a way to find more wickets. They lost two games where they managed to score 170+ last season, so providing support to the likes of Alana King will be key. Lauren Bell would love playing at the WACA, as would Kate Cross who played for the Scorchers in WBBL04. There’s also talk that an agreement is already in place to pick up English wicketkeeper Amy Jones through direct nominations.

    MELBOURNE RENEGADES

    Finish last year: Seventh

    Draft picks: 2, 10, 23, 26

Current Squad: Sophie Molineux (capt), Sarah Coyte, Jess Duffin, Ella Hayward, Georgia Prestwidge, Tayla Vlaeminck, Georgia Wareham

The one player they must draft:

This list has holes everywhere but was particularly light for reliable batters last season, so Indian veteran Harmanpreet Kaur is available to the ‘Gades as a retention pick after pulling out of the WBBL last summer would stabilise a shaky top order, albeit she is coming off a poor showing in The Hundred.

What they really need to achieve at the draft:

Unfortunately for the Renegades, they need help in just about every area given the injury cloud over Molineux – returning from an ACL – and the absence of the perenially-sidelined Vlaeminck after shoulder surgery. Wareham shapes as their linchpin, so pace and batting depth to support her would be useful.

    MELBOURNE STARS

    Finish last year: Sixth

    Draft picks: 4, 12, 21, 28

Current Squad: Annabel Sutherland, Nicole Faltum, Sophie Day, Meg Lanning (capt), Rhys McKenna, Tess Flintoff, Kim Garth, Sasha Moloney

The one player they must draft:

Lanning’s expected return makes the Stars a vastly improved outfit but some extra batting would still be beneficial. South African opener Tazmin Brits – who had a strong T20 World Cup earlier this year – is one such option in the platinum band.

What they really need to achieve at the draft:

With Lanning back there are no gaping holes at the Stars so general consolidation would be useful. England’s spinning all-rounder Sophia Dunkley is expected to join via the post-draft mechanism.

    SYDNEY SIXERS

    Finish last year: Runners’ up

    Draft picks: Pick 7, 15, 18, 31

Current Squad: Ellyse Perry (capt), Jade Allen, Maitlan Brown, Erin Burns, Lauren Cheatle, Ashleigh Gardner, Emma Hughes

The one player they must draft:

Deepti Sharma. Sophie Ecclestone’s accurate spin was so good for the Sixers last year, but her injury withdrawal changes things for the maidens in Magenta. Indian spinner Sharma may not slip this far down in the draft, but would be a smart buy for the Sixers as she could bowl in tandem with Ash Gardner and rip teams apart.

What they really need to achieve at the draft:

The strong mail is the New Zealand champion Suzie Bates will return to the Sixers under a loophole where players can avoid going into the draft and choose their club by taking a reduced fee. The Sixers already have a number of class pace bowlers on their list and their top order batting also looks strong so their priorities should be securing all-rounders and spinners. Sneh Rana is another Indian all-rounder who could be on the radar. New Sixers GM Rachael Haynes bought Rana in the 2023 Indian Women’s Premier League auction

    SYDNEY THUNDER

    Finish last year: Last

    Draft picks: Pick 1, 9, 24, 25

Current Squad: Hannah Darlington, Sammy-Jo Johnson, Anika Learoyd, Phoebe Litchfield, Lauren Smith

The one player they must draft:

Shabnim Ismail. Melbourne Renegades have retention rights over the South African speedster, but may choose to prioritise Harmanpreet Kaur or Chamari Athapaththu with their one retention pick. If so, the Thunder should be targeting Ismail as the quickest bowler in the world right now.

What they really need to achieve at the draft:

After finishing stone cold last in 2022-23, the Thunder need to reinvent themselves and really nail this draft. Can’t afford international pretenders. They need the real deal. Recruiting batting support for Phoebe Litchfield will be vital.

‘Need to issue health warnings’: Ange’s full circle moment as ‘bold’ approach pays off — UK View

It was 23 years ago Ange Postecoglou led his South Melbourne team into battle against Manchester United.

The Australian side took part in the 2000 Club World Championship alongside the Red Devils.

That day, Postecoglou tested his tactical wit against the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, who named the likes of Andy Cole, Phil Neville and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in his team for the match and even brought on David Beckham off the bench.

United went on to win 2-0 that day via a Quinton Fortune double.

Over two decades later, Postecoglou was on the right side of the same scoreline as his Tottenham Hotspur side beat United in his home debut.

Not only was it Postecoglou’s first win as Tottenham boss, it was the first win by an Australian manager in the Premier League.

A goal from midfielder Pape Matar Sarr and an own-goal from Red Devils defender Lisandro Martinez did the business as the adoring Tottenham faithful sung Postecoglou’s name long into the afternoon and night.

Sarr’s impressive display was emblematic of the freedom Postecoglou has given to his revamped midfield, but most important was how willing the Frenchman was to do the dirty work.

“Preferred to the legs of Oliver Skipp, Sarr offers something slightly different in his bombastic tackling skills,” The Athletic’s Tim Spiers wrote.

“He’s aggressive, physical and likes to get in the box.”

Spiers added: “The fans were on their feet again when Sarr departed near the end and rightly so – he and the dynamic new-look Spurs midfield look the real deal.”

Alongside Sarr in the midfield was Yves Bissouma, who provided a timely reminder as to why Tottenham moved for him last season.

“Bissouma struggled in his first season at Spurs following a move from Brighton but here was the game’s outstanding performer, helping Pape Matar Sarr outflank United completely in midfield, where Casemiro looked like a player with many miles on the clock and Mason Mount was, to put it kindly, anonymous,” BBC chief football writer Phil McNulty said.

For all of Tottenham’s attacking verve under Postecoglou in their home opener, they are still raw when it comes to carrying out the Aussie boss’ tactics.

“Several times, they either overplayed or ran into trouble during a first half United dominated,” Spiers said.

“It was high risk but with little reward other than a couple of opportunities on the counter and Porro hitting the post.

Mac Allister shown RED on Anfield debut | 00:37

“And with United plugging the midfield gap they had left exposed against Wolverhampton Wanderers, it was an opening 45 minutes that showed this team will be a work in progress for some time yet.”

But even if Tottenham are a more vulnerable team at the back as a result of Postecoglou’s gung-ho style, it is a welcome change for the fans from the dark days of Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho’s brand of football.

The raucous atmosphere, even in the wake of Harry Kane’s departure, was evidence the fans are backing Postecoglou all the way as he sets about his Tottenham revolution.

As The Times’ Alyson Rudd wrote, it’s time to buckle up the seatbelt and enjoy the ride.

“Under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, Spurs had shrivelled into a ball of pragmatism in the futile search for silverware,” Rudd said.

“Under Ange Postecoglou they are expressive, bold, fun and carefree. Erik ten Hag simply ran out of ways to handle it, the way a kindergarten teacher might despair of a class having a water fight.

“Tottenham may need to issue health warnings if this marks just the beginning of what the Australian has planned for the Premier League.”
