Calafiori compared to Ramos as Arsenal told defender can do it all

Arsenal are getting a defender who can do it all in Riccardo Calafiori.

That’s according to talkSPORT host, and former Chelsea striker, Tony Cascarino ahead of the Italy defender’s switch to the Emirates.

talkSPORT understands the Gunners have reached an agreement in principle with Bologna to sign the 22-year-old.

The deal is believed to be worth an initial £34million, rising to £38m in add-ons.

A post went viral on social media purporting to be from his girlfriend claiming he had joined, but she later denied that it was from her account.

The north Londoners already have William Saliba and Gabriel as their centre-back pairing, who were both rock solid for Arsenal in their attempt to topple Manchester City last season.

Cascarino said on Weekend Sports Breakfast: “If Arsenal are getting a deal done for £40 million for a centre-half that a lot of clubs have looked at and wanted then that’s a fantastic addition to the club.

“He’s got it all. He’s really composed, but he’s got a bit of Sergio Ramos in him as well.

“He gets on the ball, he can find passes really easily. You can play him in a three, you can play him in a two. He’s really versatile and I think it’s a great addition for Arsenal.”

European football expert Lars Sivertsen says Calafiori will still be a perfect addition – and the versatile star doesn’t just play at centre-back either.

He said: “A very confident defender, used to play as a left-back when he was younger.

“I think the memory most people will have of him this summer is when he was striding forth with the ball for Italy when they got a last minute draw against Croatia.”

Calafiori joined Bologna last summer, helping them to finish fifth in Serie A last term, rising from ninth place from the season prior.

Under head coach Thiago Motta he was switched to a centre-back role, where he emerged as one of the best players in the league – making 37 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice and providing five assists.

He kept his new role for Euro 2024, bursting forward from central defence and feeding Lazio winger Mattia Zaccagni who bagged a last-ditch equaliser and broke Croatian hearts.

“That’s quite indicative,” Sivertsen said. “He’s quite a confident guy, he used to play at left-back so is confident moving the ball forward out of defence.

Simon Jordan is left stunned by Arsenal’s £50 million price tag for Eddie Nketiah and claims he would be ‘lucky’ to be worth £30 million

“He’s also a good defender. You can probably use him at left-back if you want to. I think it’s a really interesting addition to Arsenal.

“I think he’s good enough to play for the first-team and he gives them an option for two different positions.”

Despite not being far into his career, the defender got experience outside of Italy before popping up on Arsenal’s radar.

Sivertsen continued: “A really interesting player. He took a slightly roundabout way to reach the levels he’s at now.

“He was on the books at Roma. He’s from Rome and he was part of the youth set-up and then never quite broke through there.

“Then he went off to Switzerland to play for Basel, which was an odd thing for a young, promising player to do.

“But he found his groove there and was part of the great Bologna team that surprised a lot of people in Serie A this season.”

Calafiori’s Bologna contract expires in June 2027.

Arsenal are yet to make a signing this summer, but are still being linked to other Euro 2024 star, Nico Williams.

Arsenal target Riccardo Calafiori’s partner is threatening to take legal action after a post appearing to confirm his move went viral.

The Bologna defender’s girlfriend, Benedetta Boeme, has released a statement on Instagram denying she broke the news of Calafiori’s confirmed move.

talkSPORT understands the Gunners have reached an agreement in principle to sign the 22-year-old in a deal worth an initial £34million, rising to £38m in add-ons.

A screenshot of a TikTok story from an account named bboeme_, which has Boeme as its profile picture alongside other posts of the couple on its page, was picked up by Gunners fans on Saturday.

The post on the account read: “Many of you have been asking what’s been going on in my life lately, so I decided to finally share it with you. Riccardo and I are no longer together at the moment.

“I don’t know if we will get through, but I doubt it. I needed some time to process everything that happened over the past 3-4 days. I still need time.

“Thanks to everyone who showed me the video circulating on TikTok this week. I appreciate it; it was important for me to know the truth.

“I’ve watched it countless times, searching for a reason to forgive and forget, but I couldn’t. We talked about it, but I am still uncertain of the answers to my questions.

“It was a difficult decision, one we were considering for days. Neither of us wanted this, but what’s done is done and I can’t help it but want to run away from all this.

“I will not tolerate any kind of hate towards me or him. I wish him all the best as he joins Arsenal. He has all my support.

“And if any of my followers feel they don’t want to continue following me now that he’s not around, feel free to unfollow. Thank you for understanding.”

Now, though, Boeme has taken to her Instagram to deny that she posted this, or that she even has a TikTok account.

Writing on her story to her 40.9k follows, she said: “I am forced to write here that I have no TikTok profile!! Someone is pretending to be me and writing things that are not true!

“This is my only social media account. I have never talked about anything and I never will.

“I kindly ask whoever opened the TikTok profile pretending to be me and writing personal and delicate things, which then get reported as articles in the media, to immediately close the profile, otherwise I will take legal action.”

If he signs, Calafiori will be Arsenal’s first signing of the summer.

European football expert Lars Sivertsen gave talkSPORT the run down on the defender, praising him as a ‘very confident defender’.

  • Arsenal have found the perfect fit, while new Saka partner could be game changer

Arsenal have found the perfect fit, while new Saka partner could be game changer

If the transfer market was run like a dating app, Mikel Arteta’s search criteria would see him tick ‘tall’, ‘technical’ and ‘adaptable’ almost every time he logged on.

Size matters to the Spaniard, along with skill and multi-functionality.

    5

Arteta has definitely developed a type in the transfer marketCredit: Getty

Look at Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber, Ben White and Jakub Kiwior. All physically imposing acquisitions of his, who are great on the ball yet not defined by a single role.

Playing fluid football like his, you need players who can seamlessly move from one area to the next.

Big ‘uns are also a key part of Arteta’s imprint.

Those imposing tunnel stare downs, Patrick Vieira-style, can intimidate opponents (which helps sometimes) and after gaining so many extra points courtesy of set piece dominance, it’s a ploy that’s sure to be continued.

    Caliafiori: The perfect fit

So, when you think about it, Arsenal’s summer pursuit of Italy’s Riccardo Calafiori makes sense on just about every level.

Ticking all those boxes I’ve referenced; he fits in beautifully with the model that’s being created at the Emirates Stadium.

The 22-year-old is an elegant central defender blessed with height, pace, bravery, a strong reading of the game, and fantastic quality on the ball.

The way he carried it forward for Luciano Spalletti’s side at Euro 2024 was great to watch, as was his progressive distribution.

Arteta will have noted this long before he kicked a ball in the competition, of course.

In Serie A for Bologna last term, Calafiori raced forward to supply five assists in his last ten starts.

    Left-back option

Crucially, and certainly not coincidentally, the youngster can also operate comfortably at left-back; a position which is very much up for grabs.

At first glance Arsenal look left-back heavy, with Timber, Kiwior, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Kieran Tierney and Takehiro Tomiyasu all viable options.

Strip things away though, and the reality is different.

Tomiyasu is more right-sided, Tierney is unlikely to be in Arteta’s plans, while Kiwior and Zinchenko are both being linked with transfers.

Zinchenko could be among the players to leave Arsenal this summer

The Pole is more likely to depart in search of regular game time, with the Ukrainian potentially becoming a left midfield option, having lost some form and trust in the defensive side of his game.

Fit again Timber will probably start 2024/25 at left back, and deservedly so, but if Kiwior leaves and Zinny isn’t under consideration, the squad will need a natural left footer like Calafiori to fill that void.

Breaking up the best centre-back partnership in the division is not under consideration, but as far as cover for William Saliba or Gabriel Maghalaes goes, you aren’t going to get much better than the highly rated Italian.

Arsenal were fortunate to keep both central defenders fit for the entirety of last season, but might not be as lucky this time around. They must be prepared.

Remember, Arteta also loves a back four containing a quartet of centre backs.

Cover for Saliba and Gabriel could be key this season

Former Stoke City boss Tony Pulis was pilloried for doing the same, but Arsenal’s rearguard doesn’t just kick it and head it. White and Calafiori are rounded footballers with the ability to smoothly build play and create.

Offering the same technical prowess as a diminutive full back, while at the same time adding to Arsenal’s armoury when attacking and defending set pieces, why wouldn’t you use them there?

At a good age with scope for massive development, Calafiori feels tailor-made to be a key part of this Arsenal squad moving forwards.

I really hope it’s a move that comes off.

Would be nice to get Nico

I’m also excited that Arsenal are in the mix to sign Nico Williams, a contender for Player of the Tournament at Euro 2024

Just like Calafiori, the Spanish winger fulfils all the criteria in Arteta’s search engine.

We know the Arsenal gaffer can be ruthless if he thinks a position can be upgraded, even when the present incumbents are doing just fine. Ask Aaron Ramsdale all about that.

So should Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus be a little worried about their place on the left of the Gunners attack? Maybe.

Trossard’s lethal finishing and versatility will guarantee him plenty more opportunities, but on the back of under-par seasons from Martinelli and Jesus, it will be fascinating to see if Arteta opts to bring in somebody above them.

Williams’ numbers in LaLiga are certainly outstanding for a 21-year-old.

Providing 11 assists, he was a constant menace to full-backs throughout a stellar individual campaign for Athletic Bilbao.

Williams caused havoc for defenders in LaLiga last season

    5

Williams caused havoc for defenders in LaLiga last season

If Williams does move to Arsenal and plays the left, he would simultaneously offer useful cover for Bukayo Saka on the other flank too.

The Spain international is not perturbed at the prospect of switching wings.

Encountering many opponents who will try and stifle Arsenal with defensive tactics next term, the explosive and skilful Williams could be a magnificent, game-changing addition.

    No time to stand still

As they’re in such high demand let’s not jump the gun and suggest Calafiori and Williams are done deals – but these links do show that times are a changing in north London.

Arteta hasn’t come this far to sit on his hands and hope for the best.

OK there’s no title to show for it yet, but these are good times in N5 and he knows that Arsenal’s current attractiveness has to be exploited in the transfer window.

Top players will definitely be interested, and if he can do deals to recruit two of the brightest young stars of Euro 2024 in the coming weeks, it will be the perfect way to encourage others to follow them through the door.

Martinelli and Timber benched in new-look Arsenal side with three huge signings

Arsenal look set for another for another busy summer as Mikel Arteta looks to end the club’s 21-year wait for the Premier League title.

The Gunners are poised to splash the cash yet again – adding to the £250m they forked out in 2023.

Arteta’s side have already confirmed the £27m arrival of goalkeeper David Raya having turned his loan spell into a permanent switch.

And this looks poised to be one of many incomings at the Emirates, with a versatile defender, midfielder and forward all on the club’s wish list.

It is believed that Arsenal aim to sell a number of players – including Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson and Aarom Ramsdale – to help fund their purchases.

Arsenal had been keen to bring in a new striker with Benjamin Sesko eyed up, but he has decided to remain at RB Leipzig after signing a new deal in Germany.

The Gunners are understood to have him on their radar ahead of a possible move next summer, which could see Kai Havertz lead the line in the upcoming season.

This may see Arsenal turn towards bringing in a high-profile winger such as Nico Williams – in addition to potentially securing the services of Riccardo Calafiori and Joshua Kimmich.

Here talkSPORT.com takes a look at how the north London giants could start against Wolves on the opening game of the 2024/25 campaign should they land the three players – all of whom have starred at Euro 2024.

Following Raya’s arrival, the Spaniard will keep his place as the club’s No1 between the sticks having won the Golden Glove with 16 clean sheets.

Slotting in at right-back would be Ben White, who has become one of the league’s best full-backs since transitioning from his natural centre-back position.

But there could be one change made to Arsenal’s formidable backline, with talkSPORT understanding that versatile Bologna star Calafiori is a target.

Emmanuel Petit reveals that Napoli’s Victor Osimhen is the one player he wants Arsenal to sign this summer

The 22-year-old helped Bologna to a fifth-placed finish in Serie A, with his reputation growing following his dazzling displays for Italy at the European Championship.

His capability of playing as a centre-back and as an inverted left-back is appealing to Arteta, though it would leave him with a headache over where he features.

And with William Saliba and Gabriel Magaelhaes boasting one of the best centre-back partnerships in the top-flight, Arteta may be reluctant to break it up.

This would see Calafiori slot in on the left side of defence, which would keep Jurrien Timber, who spent almost the entirety of last season out with a knee injury, on the bench.

He would then join Jakub Kiwior, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kieran Tierney as back-up options.

It’s no secret that Arsenal are keen on bringing in a defensive midfielder, with Bayern Munich’s Kimmich touted as a possible option.

The German maestro has just a year left on his deal at the Allianz Arena, with Vincent Kompany’s side prepared to cash in on him to avoid losing him on a free.

And it is believed that the 29-year-old would welcome a move to Arsenal should he decide for a new adventure away from the Bundesliga.

He would then start ahead of Thomas Partey and Jorginho, which would allow Declan Rice to continue thriving in his new box-to-box role.

Skipper Martin Odegaard would complete the midfield three, with the Norwegian recognised as one of Europe’s top playmakers.

Hale End graduate Bukayo Saka would then keep his place on the right wing after hitting record figures last campaign – chipping in with 20 goals and 14 assists in all competitions.

But there could be a huge change on the opposite flank, which would see Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard drop to the bench.

talkSPORT reported last month how Arsenal were keeping tabs on Athletic Bilbao star Williams, who has starred for Spain at Euro 2024.

With a release clause of £47m, the speedy 21-year-old could be at the centre of a transfer tug of war between many teams across Europe.

And if Arteta was to overlook bringing in a new centre-forward, Havertz would likely retain his starting spot up top ahead of Gabriel Jesus.

Arsenal are interested in signing Italy star Riccardo Calafiori after a stunning campaign with Bologna, talkSPORT understands.

The Gunners are interested in bolstering their defensive ranks this season and have compiled a list of potential targets.

talkSPORT understands that Bologna star Calafiori is among them, though nothing is advanced in terms of negotiation yet.

Mikel Arteta saw his side finish runners-up to Manchester City for the second time last season, a position the Spaniard wants to rectify.

And signing a new defender is among his priorities, despite boasting the best defensive record last season in the Premier League.

Calafiori has become hot property over the transfer window having impressed for Italy during Euro 2024.

While the Euro 2020 winners had a poor tournament and crashed out at the first knockout round, the 22-year-old was a shining light for the Azzurri.

It follows a stunning campaign at Bologna where the defender played a huge role in their creditable third-placed finish in Serie A.

It will see Bologna play in the Champions League for the first time, though they are facing an exodus with coach Thiago Motta already joining Juventus and star striker Joshua Zirkzee linked with a high-profile Premier League move.

Calafiori is another who looks set to depart, with Arsenal leading the race for the former Basel ace.

However, several clubs are interested in the Italian, including Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Calafiori has been praised for his versatility to play at left-back and centre-back and has been denoted for his ability to operate in a hybrid role, stepping into midfield from an inverted position that has quickly become a key tactical decision under some of the top teams in Europe.

Juventus had been reported to be the frontrunners for his signature but Bologna director Giovanni Satori believes he will end up abroad.

“I think he will not end up joining Juventus,” said the club chief. “Probably he can go abroad, in case we decide to sell him.

“We’d like to keep Calafiori so let’s see what happens.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal could see midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga leave for Sevilla, potentially on a permanent deal or on loan with an obligation to buy.
