IND vs AFG, 3rd T20I: India vs Afghanistan, Third Match – Reactions and Quotes

After losing the first two T20Is comprehensively, Afghanistan gave a good account of themselves in the third T20I in Bengaluru on Wednesday, January 17. However, the ‘Men in Blue’ managed to win the encounter in the second Super Over.

India posted a mammoth 212/4 in their 20 overs, after being reduced to 22/4 inside the PowerPlay. However, Rohit Sharma (121 off 69 balls) and Rinku Singh (69 off 39 balls) forged a remarkable 190-run unbeaten partnership to resurrect the Indian innings and put the team in a position of strength.

In reply, Afghanistan were bolstered by half-centuries from their first three batters, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (50 off 32 balls), skipper Ibrahim Zadran (50 off 41 balls), and Gulbadin Naib (55 not out off 23 balls). Mohammad Nabi also contributed nicely with a 16-ball 34. Naib batted till the end as the game was tied. Mukesh Kumar conceded 18 runs off the last over while defending 19.

In the first Super Over, Afghanistan scored 16 off Mukesh. Azmatullah Omarzai bowled for Afghanistan and India also managed 16 runs. The second Super Over saw India batting first. Fareed Ahmed conceded a six and a four from his first two balls bowled at Rohit. However, he pulled things back nicely as India lost two wickets in five balls with 11 runs on the board. Rohit brought Ravi Bishnoi on to bowl. The move worked wonders as the leg-spinner bagged a couple of wickets in the first three deliveries as Afghanistan could only get one run. With this breathtaking win, the hosts completed a 3-0 whitewash.

Here are the talking points of the match:

    1. Rohit Sharma roars back to form

The Indian captain registered a couple of ducks in the first two games but bounced back with a spectacular ton in the final encounter to enthrall the Bengaluru crowd. He hit 11 fours and eight sixes in his innings which helped India get out of a very grim situation.

    2. Rinku Singh continues to impress

The young left-handed batter continued his purple patch and showed that he is exceptionally good in the first innings. Coming in to bat at 22/4 in the fifth over must not have been easy but Rinku oozed confidence and hit two fours and six sixes during his stay at the crease.

    3. Gulbadin Naib displays his big-hitting skills once again

The 32-year-old didn’t get to bat in the first T20I. Afghanistan lost five wickets but Gulbadin didn’t walk out to bat. However, in the second T20I, he received a promotion to No. 3 and he came up with a belligerent 57 off 35 balls. Gulbadin put on an even better effort in the third T20I, hitting four fours and as many sixes en route to his innings of 55 off 23 balls. After his last two performances, the right-handed batter should get a long rope at No. 3.

Losing Captain, Ibrahim Zadran, Afghanistan said:

To be honest, happy with the overall performance. We have a lot of positives to take from this series. It’ll help us looking ahead to the T20 World Cup. All the boys gave it their best in these three games. We’ve never played this kind of cricket earlier against the Full Members, especially against India in T20Is. We were excellent in the batting department.

Winning Captain and Player of the Match, Rohit Sharma, India said:

We don’t do that in Tests also [having three hits in a day], think it happened once in the IPL (laughs). Creating a partnership was important, kept talking with Rinku to not lose intent. We may find ourselves in such situations in big games where we’d be 30 for 4. It was a good situation to be in with the pressure, was important to bat long, bat deep but not compromise on the intent we wanted to show. In the last couple of series he’s played, Rinku can show what he can do. Fearless, keeps himself calm, is very clear about his game plan and knows his strengths very well. He’s coming of age, creates an impression every time he gets an opportunity. In the last 10 innings for India, he’s done very well. We’ve wanted someone who can bat in the back end with a clear mindset. You saw how he’s done well in the IPL, he’s carried that forward here.

Player of the Series, Shivam Dube (124 runs and two wickets), India said:

Definitely a wonderful series, you dream of winning this award as an allrounder, happy to have achieved it. We didn’t think about the Super Over initially, but it was a great game by both teams. There are many aspects to work on, got to bowl in these three matches, I’ve learnt many things.

The South African opener got his team off to sensational start as he scored 49 off 27 balls smashing eight fours and a six in his innings. Losing Captain, Suryakumar Yadav, India said:

At the halfway stage, I thought it was a par score but they batted beautifully in the first 5-6 overs and took the game away from us. It was the brand of cricket we were talking about, just go out and express ourselves. It was tough with the wet ball, but we would face similar situations in the future and it’s a good learning for us. Looking forward to the third T20I.

Winning Captain, Aiden Markram, South Africa said:

A bit bleak about Durban, it was disappointing. Great crowd in today and it’s nice to put in a performance in front of them. It was on the slower side. But after the rain came in, it quickened up. Sometimes you try too much in T20 cricket, if a match up works you go with him. But, you don’t want to keep him for too long as the batter lines him up. (On Reeza Hendricks) He has been fantastic, super happy for him, he has adopted a bit of leadership role with the batting. Another brilliant knock from him tonight. You gotta pick form players going into the world cup. There might still be a couple of places up for grabs. Every player is working hard and giving his best. The healthy competition means a lot for us.

Player of the Match, Tabraiz Shamsi (1/18, 4 overs) said:

On his shoe-phone celebration) I packed that celebration away, but the kids keep asking me to bring it about, so can’t disappoint them. To be able to deliver under pressure against India was pleasing. (On SKY) He is a wonderful player and he has shown that again today. Aiden was brilliant with his changes. Since Rob has come in, he has created a brilliant environment in the team. He pushes hard in the field but also allows us to enjoy with our families. The results are there to show on the field.

  • ‘Rinku and Yashasvi are far ahead of all the others’ – Ruturaj Gaikwad revealed six-hitting competition in Indian camp

‘Rinku and Yashasvi are far ahead of all the others’ – Ruturaj Gaikwad revealed six-hitting competition in Indian camp

Ahead of India’s first T20I against South Africa in Durban, Ruturaj Gaikwad revealed that the team had a friendly six-hitting competition during the five-match series against Australia. Notably, the Men in Blue dominated the Matthew Wade-led side in the series and won it comfortably by 4-1.

Speaking about the team dynamics during the series, the top-order batter revealed that some of the players really enjoyed the six-hitting competition as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rinku Singh emerged as the clear winners. He also added that the team didn’t practice much ahead of the opening T20I against the Proteas but they are ready for a six-hitting battle against the Aiden Markram-led side.

“There was a six-hitting competition between some of the players during the five-match T20I series against Australia. We didn’t have much to practice before the 1st T20I against South Africa, however, we had some before the series opener against Australia. We had fun and enjoyed hitting sixes during the practice, so obviously, I would say Rinku and Yashasvi are far ahead of all the others,” Gaikwad told Star Sports.

Yashasvi is the kind of player who doesn’t hold back: Gaikwad

The opening pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad experienced some challenges in the series against Australia. Even though Ruturaj finished as the leading run-scorer, there was room for improvement for Yashasvi. Meanwhile, speaking about his new opening partner, Gaikwad stated that the youngster doesn’t hold back and plays an aggressive brand of cricket as his role is to hold one end.

“Mostly, he is the one who goes for the attacking shots from Ball 1. Yashasvi is the kind of player who doesn’t hold back. I just have to figure out a few risks, and play according to what the team requires. Definitely, when someone like Yashasvi is going hard at the other end, it’s obviously crucial for me to hold the other end and let him express the way he wants to. I enjoy batting with him,” Gaikwad concluded.

‘He averages around 50 in Ranji Trophy too’ – Ashish Nehra backs Rinku Singh’s ODI call-up for South Africa series

Star Indian batter, Rinku Singh, has been in sensational form, consistently delivering match-winning performances for his IPL franchise, the Kolkata Knight Riders, and making significant contributions to the Indian cricket team as well.

His exceptional batting prowess has garnered praise from cricketing legends. Now, as Rinku earns a well-deserved call-up to the ODI series for the South Africa tour, former Indian left-arm pacer turned renowned commentator Ashish Nehra has shared his insights. Nehra believes that the selectors have recognized something special in the southpaw, instilling confidence in him for the upcoming series.

Rinku has played a crucial role for India in the T20I series against Australia, showcasing his ability to finish games with aggressive batting. His noteworthy performance included a quickfire 46 off 29 balls in the fourth match, contributing significantly to India’s series victory with a 20 runs. Throughout the series, Rinku displayed composure and powerful hitting, earning praise for his skill in closing out matches, exemplified by his unbeaten knocks of 22 and 31 in earlier games.

The consistent exhibition of talent in the T20I series has now earned Rinku a maiden call-up to the Indian ODI squad for the forthcoming South Africa tour, highlighting the selectors’ confidence in his capacity to perform at the highest level.

Nehra, speaking to JioCinema, emphasized Rinku’s commendable average in the Ranji Trophy and pointed out that the young batter efficiently fulfilled his role when asked to bat early in the 4th T20I.

“People know Rinku Singh because of T20 but don’t forget he averages around 50 in Ranji Trophy too,” Nehra said on JioCinema. “He’s been called up to for the one-day squad too. Selectors must’ve seen something. He came in to bat early today. We have seen him bat in the death overs a lot of times but the way he played today deserves appreciation. He batted the way team needed him. At one point, it looked they could make 190 but if India would’ve lost Rinku at that stage, scoring 160 would have become a challenge too.”

“It’s a big plus for India that they have selected him in 50-over format and today, he got a chance to bat early and he showed that (he can bat long),” said Nehra.
