IPL 2025 Auction: 4 players DC can retain as per the current ‘3+1’ rule

As the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 draws near, the much-anticipated mega auction is set to reshuffle the decks for all ten franchises, with most players being released back into the auction pool.

Delhi Capitals’ strategy for a title-contending core

For the Delhi Capitals (DC), a team that has long been searching for its maiden IPL title despite being part of the league since its inception, this auction represents a crucial opportunity to reset and rebuild. After a disappointing 2024 season, where they failed to qualify for the playoffs, Delhi are poised to embark on a long-term strategy to forge a stable and competitive core that can lead them to consistent success in the coming years.

Historical challenges and the need for stability

Delhi have been one of the most enigmatic franchises in IPL history, often showing promise but faltering at key moments. Despite making it to the playoffs six times in 16 seasons, they have only reached the final once, a testament to their inconsistent performances. One of the primary reasons for this has been the frequent changes in the team’s core.

Delhi have often tinkered with their playing styles and squad composition, preventing players from settling into a cohesive unit. This lack of stability has been a significant hindrance to developing a winning culture within the team. In recent seasons, DC attempted to build a core around a group of young players, but even this approach failed to yield the desired results, leaving the franchise once again at a crossroads.

4 possible key retentions by Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2025:

With the mega auction on the horizon, Delhi have the opportunity to establish a strong foundation by retaining a select group of players who can lead the team into a new era of success. The focus will be on acquiring and retaining players who not only bring immediate value but also have the potential to serve the team for the next five to six years. Here’s a detailed look at the key players DC might retain to form a robust core:

    1. Jake Fraser-McGurk: The Aggressive Opener

Jake Fraser-McGurk, the young Australian sensation, made waves in IPL 2024 with his fearless and ultra-aggressive approach at the top of the order. His performances instilled a new sense of belief within the Capitals, demonstrating that they could adapt to the fast-evolving landscape of T20 cricket. Fraser-McGurk’s ability to take on the bowlers from the outset can give DC a crucial edge in setting or chasing competitive totals.

His dynamic style of play aligns perfectly with the modern demands of the game, making him an invaluable asset as DC looks to build a future-proof squad. Fraser-McGurk impressed with his exceptional strike rate of 234.04, amassing 330 runs in 9 innings at an average of 36.66, with four fifties. His 32 fours and 28 sixes reflect his power-packed performance.

    2. Tristan Stubbs: The Middle-Order Powerhouse

South African middle-order batter Tristan Stubbs epitomizes the aggressive, dynamic approach that has become synonymous with success in T20 cricket. While Fraser-McGurk can provide explosive starts, Stubbs can take the baton and maintain the pressure on the opposition in the middle overs. His ability to accelerate the scoring rate and finish innings strongly makes him a critical component of DC’s batting lineup.

By retaining Stubbs, Delhi can ensure they have the firepower needed to dominate the crucial middle stages of their innings, turning tight games in their favor. Stubbs showcased his explosive hitting ability with a strike rate of 190.90, scoring 378 runs in 13 innings at an average of 54.00, including three half-centuries. His 24 fours and 26 sixes underline his aggressive style

    3. Kuldeep Yadav: The Spin Maestro

Kuldeep Yadav, the experienced left-arm wrist spinner, has been a cornerstone of DC’s bowling attack in recent seasons. His ability to control the game in the middle overs with his variations and accuracy has often been the deciding factor in many of DC’s victories. As the Capitals transition into a new phase, Kuldeep’s experience and skill will be essential in maintaining a balanced and potent bowling unit.

His presence provides DC with a reliable option to contain runs and take wickets in crucial phases of the game, making him an indispensable part of their plans. In IPL 2024, Kuldeep delivered a consistent performance for Delhi, taking 16 wickets in 11 innings. He bowled 43 overs, conceding 372 runs at an average of 23.25 and a strike rate of 16.1. His best bowling figures of 4/55 highlighted his ability to take crucial wickets, and he maintained an economy rate of 8.65 throughout the season

    4. Axar Patel: The All-Round Match-Winner

Axar Patel has transformed into one of the most reliable and versatile all-rounders in world cricket, and his contributions in both departments have been pivotal for DC. In 2024, Axar scored 235 runs and took 11 wickets, underlining his value as a genuine match-winner. His performances in the T20 World Cup 2024 further solidified his reputation as a player who can deliver under pressure. Retaining Axar would provide DC with a player who can contribute in all facets of the game, offering balance and depth to both the batting and bowling departments.

    The linchpin facing uncertainty

Rishabh Pant has been a pivotal figure for the Delhi, serving both as a leader and a prolific run-scorer. In the IPL 2024 season, Pant excelled as the franchise’s top scorer, amassing 446 runs in 13 innings at an average of 40.50 and a strike rate of 155.40, including three half-centuries.

However, despite his significant contributions for DC, Pant’s performance on the international stage has faced scrutiny, particularly after the T20 World Cup 2024 where he struggled to make an impact. This international underperformance, combined with the departure of DC’s head coach Ricky Ponting, has fueled rumors about Pant’s potential release ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. The lack of recent results in the shorter formats has led to questions about his future with the franchise.

Watch: Rishabh Pant’s blunder hands Maheesh Theekshana a lifeline; furious Rohit Sharma reacts with death stare

India wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant made a huge blunder behind the stumps in the ongoing game against Sri Lanka National Cricket Team. The third and final ODI of the series between the teams is taking place at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Rishabh Pant didn’t have the kind of outing he would’ve wanted behind the stumps. He missed the simple stumping, and it resulted in Sri Lanka National Cricket Team batter Maheesh Theekshana coming out to bat after going back into the hut.

During the last ball of the 49th over, Mahesh Theekshana ran down the wicket and attempted the wild swing across the line. Watching the batter coming out of the crease early, Kuldeep Yadav shortened his length. The batter missed the ball by the miles and it was an easy stumping for Rishabh Pant behind the stumps.

Rishabh Pant made a mess of it as he took his own time to remove the bails. Watching bails being removed, Maheesh Theekshana walked back to the dugout, but the replays showed that the time taken by Pant allowed Theekshana to get back in the crease and save his wicket.

It was a pretty poor effort from Rishabh Pant, as had he taken the bails off quickly, then Theekshana would’ve been out. The Sri Lankan player then had to come out of the dressing room again to bat again. Notably, the third umpire also made a funny blunder as at first he displayed an ‘out’ decision on the big screen before changing it to ‘not-out’. Also, India captain Rohit Sharma had a dejected look on his face and he furiously gave a death stare to the keeper.

KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant? Rohit Sharma discusses wicket-keeping conundrum ahead of ODI series against Sri Lanka

The anticipation builds for the ODI series between Sri Lanka and India at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on August 2, 2024. Fans eagerly await the team’s final decision on the wicketkeeper-batters between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, confident that either choice will significantly bolster India’s performance.

Rohit Sharma addresses the wicketkeeping problem

During a candid interview before the commencement of the ODI series between Sri Lanka and India, Indian captain Rohit Sharma addressed the ongoing dilemma within the wicket-keeping department. He confirmed that the team would field only one wicketkeeper-batter for the series but refrained from disclosing who would be in the final XI for the first ODI.

Rohit referred to the situation as a “happy problem,” emphasising the strength both candidates bring to the team.

It is difficult to choose between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. Both are match-winners in their own way, but it is a happy problem. I want to have that kind of problem; we will decide tomorrow,” Rohit remarked during the interview.

On the other hand, Rahul has showcased exceptional form in recent ODI matches. During the ODI World Cup 2023, Rahul amassed an impressive 452 runs in 11 matches, including one century and two half-centuries, boasting a strike rate of 90.76 and an average of 75.33.

SA vs IND: Fans relentlessly troll Rishabh Pant for his disappointing batting display in the T20 World Cup 2024 final

In the T20 World Cup 2024 final between India and South Africa at Kensington Oval in Barbados’ Bridgetown, Rishabh Pant‘s failure at the crease proved to be a pivotal moment for Team India’s batting aspirations.

    India’s promising start dashed early

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first against South Africa, who were making their maiden appearance in a T20 World Cup final. The innings began with fireworks as Rohit and Virat Kohli aggressively smashed five boundaries in the opening over, setting a tone of dominance. However, the early optimism was abruptly halted when Rohit fell early, dismissed for just 9 runs by Keshav Maharaj in only the second over of the innings.

Rishabh Pant’s early dismissal rocks India in T20 World Cup final

Following Rohit’s dismissal, Pant strode to the crease with the responsibility to stabilize India’s innings alongside Kohli. Nevertheless, Pant’s tenure at the crease turned out to be disappointingly brief and eventful. He came in looking to assert himself, attempting a sweep shot off a low full-toss delivered by South African spinner Maharaj. Unfortunately, Pant mistimed the shot, resulting in a top edge that was easily gathered by wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock. With this, Pant was dismissed without contributing to India’s total, leaving the team in a precarious position early in the match.

In the aftermath of Pant’s dismissal, social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), exploded with criticism directed at the young wicketkeeper-batter. Fans and cricket enthusiasts expressed frustration and disappointment over Pant’s reckless shot selection, with many questioning his judgment in attempting such a risky shot against a spinner early in his innings. Others lamented his lack of game awareness and the potential impact of his dismissal on India’s chances in the final.

    Here’s how fans reacted:

Virat Kohli leads recovery as India posts competitive total

After Pant’s dismissal for a duck, India faced early setbacks but recovered well. Kohli anchored the innings with a composed 76 off 59 balls, guiding India through the middle overs. Axar Patel played a crucial knock of 47 off 31 balls, stabilizing the innings and providing momentum with a strike rate of 151.61. Shivam Dube contributed a quickfire 27 off 16 balls, including three boundaries and a six, boosting India’s total. Hardik Pandya added a brisk 5 not out off just 2 balls at the end. Despite losing wickets at crucial junctures, India managed to post a competitive total of 176/7 in their 20 overs, showcasing a blend of steady partnerships and aggressive batting phases.

T20 World Cup 2024: Rishabh Pant unveils a distinctive condition that teams should adapt in the US

The Indian cricket contingent initiated their inaugural comprehensive practice session in New York preceding the T20 World Cup 2024, with Rishabh Pant participating in his initial training stint with the national team in over a year.

Rishabh Pant reveals the US playing conditions

In a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Pant expressed his longing for playing on the Indian team, emphasizing the joy of practicing, donning the Team India jersey, and relishing camaraderie with teammates.

“This is one thing I missed a lot (practising with the Indian team and playing for them). Getting back on the field with the Indian jersey on, it is a different feel altogether and this is something I missed a lot. I think seeing the teammates and meeting them again, spending time, having fun with them, enjoying having conversations, really enjoying it,” Pant said in a video.

Pant also noted the challenge of adapting to the conditions in the USA, citing the unfamiliarity of teams with playing in the country as a potential hurdle.

“We are used to playing in certain countries but this is a different prospect. It has opened up a different channel for sport because I feel cricket is growing around the world and getting in a country like the US and getting the exposure here would be nice for cricket as well as USA cricket I guess,” he added.

“New pitches are there, just getting used to this condition. I think the sun is brighter here, so just getting used to conditions over here and let us see how it goes. Hopefully, I make it count and make it more better from here,” Pant concluded.

  • IPL 2024: Playoffs qualification scenario for DC after their win against LSG

IPL 2024: Playoffs qualification scenario for DC after their win against LSG

Delhi Capitals (DC) concluded their league stage with a 19-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 64th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. This win has kept DC in the contention for a top-four finish.

Asked to bat first, DC posted a commanding total of 208 for 4, with significant contributions from Abhishek Porel (58 off 33) and Tristan Stubbs (57 off 25). In the chase, DC’s bowlers dismantled LSG’s top order, laying the groundwork for their victory. Despite spirited efforts from LSG’s Nicholas Pooran (61 off 27) and Arshad Khan (58 off 33), the visitors fell short of the target. However, DC’s hopes of qualifying for the playoffs remain uncertain, relying heavily on miraculous outcomes.

Delhi Capitals’ position in the points table

DC are currently placed fifth in the team standings, having accumulated 14 points. The Capitals’ net run rate (NRR) of -0.377 is a significant concern, as it places them below both the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), despite all three teams having the same points.

    Playoffs qualification scenario for DC

The only way the team led by Rishabh Pant could qualify is if the CSK defeat Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and SRH lose both their remaining matches by a combined margin of 194 runs. Additionally, LSG would need to either lose to the Mumbai Indians (MI) or win while maintaining a net run rate below DC.

IPL 2024 [WATCH]: ‘Gusse Me Tha’ – Axar Patel reveals Rishabh Pant’s reaction after one-match ban

In the high-stakes 62nd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are taking on Delhi Capitals (DC) at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium. With both teams fighting tooth and nail to secure a playoff spot, the encounter promised high-octane action. However, DC faced a significant setback ahead of the game, as their regular skipper Rishabh Pant found himself suspended for one match due to a slow-over rate offence.

Filling in Pant’s shoes, Axar Patel led the Capitals onto the field for the toss, squaring off against Faf du Plessis of RCB. Winning the toss, Axar opted to bowl first, aiming to restrict the opposition and chase down the target later. Amidst the tension, Axar provided a glimpse into Pant’s reaction to the suspension.

Axar Patel reveals Rishabh Pant’s reaction

Axar, assuming the leadership mantle in Pant’s absence, disclosed Pant’s emotional state in the face of the ban. He revealed that Pant was visibly upset, expressing his frustration at the decision and even appealing against it.

The left-arm spinner emphasized the challenges captains face, bearing the brunt of slow-over rates set by the bowling unit. Despite the setback, Pant exhibited his commitment by being present at the ground, rallying his teammates and urging them to focus on the game ahead.

“Bangalore wicket is always good. It’s a chasing ground. When we start well, we dominate the game. Rishabh was angry and had appealed as well against the suspension. Bowlers take a lot of time, and the captain gets punished. He’s at the ground here, motivating the team,” said Axar.

RCB vs DC: In a big blow to Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of their crucial fixture against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), captain Rishabh Pant has been handed a one-match ban for multiple breaches in the over-rate rules. Pant will no longer take part in the RCB vs DC fixture at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday.

Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting, on the eve of his team’s fixture against RCB, announced that Axar Patel, who is the deputy to Pant, will lead the side.

“Axar Patel will be our captain tomorrow,” DC’s head coach Ricky Ponting said on the eve of the match in Bengaluru.

Notably, Rishabh Pant’s one-match ban relates to IPL’s slow over-rate penalties. Pant has committed three such breaches so far and thus suspension was slapped by the officials. DC maintained a slow over-rate against Rajasthan Royals on May 7th as they were 10 minutes behind the game.

Along with a match ban, Rishabh Pant has been slapped with a penalty of INR 30 lakhs. The rest of the DC players, including the impact substitute, have been fined INR 12 lakhs or 50 per cent of their match fee, whichever is lower.

Though Delhi Capitals (DC) challenged the match officials ruling, the BCCI ombudsman upheld the charges levelled against Rishabh Pant and stated that the decision of the match referee is final and binding.

With DC still in the IPL 2024 playoff race, Rishabh Pant’s absence is going to be a huge setback for them. The team has fared decently under Rishabh Pant, with them winning six out of 12 matches. The last four games have resulted in three wins and a solitary loss, which has helped Delhi to be in the playoff race.

Ricky Ponting, during the eve of the RCB vs DC fixture, confirmed that Axar Patel will lead the side and is excited to be in the role.

“He’s obviously been vice-captain of this franchise now for the last couple of seasons. Obviously, very experienced IPL player, an experienced international player, a very sensible guy, who understands the game really well. He’s really excited, to be honest,” said Ponting.

“We started talking about it a couple of days ago when there was a possibility that Rishabh might be banned, so he’s got his head around it, we’ve done our bowlers’ meetings today. He’ll catch up with all the guys tonight, go through all the plans, and make sure he’s ready to lead the team well tomorrow. What I know about him is, that you’ve only got to watch the way he goes about his cricket to understand that he is a sensible guy who’s always involved and in tune with the game, so I’m sure he’ll lead the team really well tomorrow.”

Delhi Capitals (DC) is among the 8 sides who are competing for the IPL 2024 playoffs. While Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings are the only two sides, that have been eliminated, the rest are still in contention some way or the other. Delhi’s playoff chances mostly rely on their performances in the next two games, along with the luck factor.

If Delhi manages to win both of its remaining matches, it will reach 16 points. Notably, CSK can also reach a total of 16 points if they win both of their games as well. However, the key differentiator at that position would be the net run rate, which isn’t in Delhi’s favour as of now.

Delhi Capitals (DC) will lock horns against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the second game of the Sunday doubleheader on May 12th. The fixture will be held at RCB’s Chinnaswamy Stadium.
