BAN v IND, WATCH: Rishabh Pant does an MS Dhoni with lightning-fast stumping to remove Nurul Hasan in 1st Test

Indian wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant channeled the inner MS Dhoni in him as he produced exceptional work behind the stumps to get rid of Nurul Hasan on Day 4 of the ongoing first Test at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.

Pant helped India take the sixth wicket of Bangladesh’s second innings with his stunning wicketkeeping. It all happened on the final delivery of the 88th over bowled by Axar Patel when the left-armer bowled a full delivery and drew the batter forward into a drive.

The ball spun away enough to go past the outside edge, and Pant showcased his quick glovework as he collected the ball and broke the stumps in no time. The momentum of drawing forward dragged Nurul’s back leg out of his crease. The stumping appeal was sent upstairs, where it showed that the batters’ foot was not behind the line when the bails were lit.

Pant’s work left netizens stunned as many recalled former Indian captain Dhoni, known for his lightning work behind the stumps. Speaking about the day’s play, India were able to stay in the game despite Zakir Hasan‘s sensational century.

Notably, India picked up a total of six wickets in the last two sessions, which came as a huge relief for them after the opening session was completely dominated by Bangladesh openers – Najmul Hossain Shanto and Zakir – who formed a stunning unbeaten 119-run stand, adding 77 in the session before the first break.

Eventually, Bangladesh reached 272/6 in their massive chase of 513, needing 241 runs more to win the contest. India, on the other hand, are inch-closer towards the victory as they need only four wickets with a final day left.

Shikhar Dhawan-led team India got bundled out in the first innings for 219 against hosts New Zealand at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Apart from the performances from Shreyas Iyer and Washington Sundar, the rest of the batting unit just failed to rise to the occasion for the side.

Among them was Rishabh Pant, who has been at the receiving end of a lot of criticism for his performance. The southpaw could only manage to score 10 runs from 16 balls before getting dismissed by Daryl Mitchell. However, prior to the match, one of the incidents that garnered attention was that of Pant’s response to commentator Harsha Bhogle’s question.

The commentator had drawn parallels to India great Virender Sehwag and opined that his red-ball records are better than the other two formats. All hell broke loose when the keeper-batter did not hold back with a rather befitting response.

“Sir, the record is just a number. My white-ball numbers are not that bad okay. Comparison does not make sense right now, I am just 24-25 years age of age. If you want to do the comparison, you can maybe do it when I am 30-32. Before that, the comparison does not make sense to me,” told Pant on Prime Video prior to the contest.

His response to Bhogle has stunned many fans as they expressed that the player was rather ‘arrogant’ and that his performances off late have not reflected well on the pitch. Moreover, many fans have also questioned the exclusion of Sanju Samson, who has been in fine touch with the bat recently.

As the third and final ODI yielded no result, this essentially meant that hosts New Zealand clinched the series 1-0. The Men in Blue management will need to get back to the drawing boards and ideate well in terms of their playing XI selection as the road to the ICC 2023 Cricket World Cup has begun. Team India take their next assignment against Bangladesh in the Test and ODI series scheduled to commence in December.
