Ed Sheeran, the global music sensation, is known for his soulful melodies and chart-topping hits. But during his recent visit to India for the ‘Mathematics’ tour, he showcased a different kind of talent—his cricketing skills. The British singer, who has been captivating audiences across the country, took a break from his musical journey to spend time with the Rajasthan Royals, one of the most beloved franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL). What followed was a heartwarming interaction, a batting session, and a touching tribute to the late Shane Warne, the legendary cricketer who once led the Royals to glory.

A royal welcome with gifts and smiles

Sheeran’s visit to the Rajasthan Royals camp was nothing short of special. The singer was greeted by Riyan Parag and Tushar Deshpande, who presented him with a custom Rajasthan Royals jersey. But this wasn’t just any jersey—it bore the name and number of Warne, the iconic spinner who captained the Royals to their maiden IPL title in 2008. Sheeran’s face lit up with joy as he held the jersey, a testament to his deep admiration for Warne.

The gifts didn’t stop there. Sheeran was also handed a cricket bat, a symbol of the sport that unites millions in India. The singer, known for his humility and down-to-earth nature, seemed genuinely touched by the gesture.

From mic to pitch: Ed Sheeran’s batting debut

The highlight of the day came when Sheeran stepped onto the field for a batting session. With Parag bowling to him, the singer showcased his cricketing prowess, much to the delight of everyone present. Sheeran’s swing was smooth, and he even managed to hit a six with a well-executed sweep shot.

Parag, who was bowling to the singer, couldn’t hide his surprise. “He’s got a good swing. I’m pleasantly surprised,” the young cricketer remarked. It was clear that Sheeran wasn’t just a music icon but also a sports enthusiast who could hold his own on the pitch.

As the session came to an end, Sheeran returned the favour by gifting Parag and Deshpande jerseys from Ipswich Town, the English football club of which he is a part owner. The exchange symbolized the beautiful intersection of sports and music, two worlds that Sheeran effortlessly bridges.

Sheeran’s bond with Shane Warne: A friendship beyond borders

The tribute to Warne held a deeper meaning for Sheeran. The singer shared a close friendship with the cricketing legend, who passed away in 2022. Sheeran had previously paid homage to Warne during his concert at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in 2023, where he sang in memory of his late friend.

Shane was an incredible human to me and every single person that he came across, and I’ve got such wonderful stories of him. People that he didn’t even know have wonderful stories of him—he gave so much of his time and energy and love. He was such a great bloke,” Sheeran once said for the legendary player.

Warne’s legacy lives on in the hearts of cricket fans worldwide, and Sheeran’s gesture of donning the Warne 23 jersey was a touching reminder of the bond they shared. The Royals, under Warne’s leadership, clinched the inaugural IPL title in 2008. As the franchise aims to reclaim the trophy in the coming seasons, Sheeran’s visit served as a source of inspiration. The singer’s love for cricket and his connection to Warne added a layer of emotion to the interaction, making it a memorable moment for everyone involved.

Twitter Reactions: Sanju Samson, bowlers lead India to 3-0 whitewash over Bangladesh in T20I series

India delivered a commanding performance, overwhelming Bangladesh by 133 runs in the third and final T20I to secure a 3-0 series sweep. The match, played in Hyderabad on Saturday (October 12), saw India setting a monumental total of 297/6, the highest ever by a full-member nation in T20I history. This remarkable feat left Bangladesh with an insurmountable task in what was essentially a dead rubber. India’s dominance from start to finish underscored their superiority in the shortest format of the game.

Sanju Samson’s record-breaking batting display in Hyderabad

India’s batting onslaught was led by Sanju Samson, who etched his name into the record books as the first Indian wicketkeeper-batter to score a T20I century. His sensational innings of 111 off just 47 balls overshadowed even Suryakumar Yadav, who also played a blistering knock Suryakumar contributed a blistering 75 from 35 deliveries, showcasing his usual flair, while Hardik Pandya’s explosive 47 off 18 provided the late flourish that pushed India’s total to a record-breaking 297/6. The relentless aggression throughout the innings not only set a new team benchmark but also left Bangladesh in disarray, struggling to comprehend the magnitude of their task.

Bangladesh’s inconsistent response: India’s bowlers seal the deal

Facing an almost impossible target, Bangladesh began their chase with some intent but quickly faltered as wickets tumbled regularly. Although Towhid Hridoy stood out with a fighting, unbeaten 63, his lone effort was not enough to stem the tide of India’s dominance. The chase lost steam after a promising start, with key wickets falling at crucial moments. However, they could only manage 164/7 in their 20 overs, never coming close to the massive target, effectively sealing their defeat.

Defending a mammoth total, India’s bowlers showed no signs of complacency and executed their plans with precision. Ravi Bishnoi, making a strong comeback into the T20I side, was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets and breaking through Bangladesh’s fragile resistance. Mayank Yadav, who featured in all three matches of the series, supported well with two wickets of his own. Throughout the game India’s bowlers and fielders remained sharp, maintaining high standards throughout. This clinical bowling performance added the finishing touch to what was a dominant all-round display by the Indian team.

Watch: Riyan Parag suffers brain-fade moment as Jeffrey Vandersay stuns him and rattles the stumps

The 22-year-old India National Cricket Team all-rounder Riyan Parag suffered a brain-fade moment in the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka National Cricket Team, which led to him getting castled by Jeffrey Vandersay on Wednesday, August 7, at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.

Riyan Parag finally got his ODI debut cap in the crucial do-or-die game against Sri Lanka after grinding hard in domestic cricket as well as in the Indian Premier League. He was handed the cap by Virat Kohli, who is the idol of the Assam batter.

Riyan Parag came in as a replacement for Arshdeep Singh and he showcased a bowling masterclass in the first innings. With his off-spin bowling, he got some crucial wickets and finished with figures of 3/54.

In the second innings, when he came out to bat, India were in trouble but he batted confidently and hit a couple of boundaries. It looked like Riyan Parag would shine with the bat as well, but he was dismissed in the 16th over, courtesy of a brain-fade moment.

On the last ball of the 16th over, Jeffrey Vandersay bowled a leg-break to Riyan Parag that went straight. The India batter didn’t cover his stumps and left the ball. It was an absolutely poor leave from the Parag as the ball went on to demolish the stumps.

Riyan Parag was back in the hut after scoring 15 runs off 13 balls, with 2 fours. He batted with a strike rate of 115.38, and after his dismissal, India lost quick wickets and got bowled out for 138, losing the match by 110 runs and facing a 0-2 series defeat.

Jeffrey Vandersay did a great job – Maheesh Theekshana

Speaking after the match, Sri Lanka spinner Maheesh Theekshana stated that the series victory over India was a confidence booster for the Lankan Lions. He also added that Indian players are used to playing on flat wickets and smaller grounds but conditions are different in Colombo. He elaborated:

“For me, it’s a confidence booster as a team. We lost the T20 series 3-0. The whole team was disappointed and we took it as a motivation. Very happy to play the last game and win the series after 1997. It’s a huge victory for us and I am really proud to be part of the XI.

“They (India) usually play on good wickets and small boundaries in India. We knew playing in Premadasa, if there’s little bit turn, we can take advantage because we have good spinners. Even in domestic, the wickets will be like this and our batters know how to play. When we were batting first, we thought that the wicket would be much better than the first two wickets.”

Maheesh Theekshana further lauded Sri Lanka players, including Jeffrey Vandersay, for performing well. He stated:

“We had to bowl more good deliveries than the last couple of matches. Rohit came into bat and he attacked me, Asitha got a good start, came back and got Shubman and then Wellalage was brilliant, Vandersay did a great job … Hasaranga in the first game, Akila bowled economically in both the games. I wanted to bowl more dot balls. It was a team effort. All the players contributed, that’s why we ended up winning.”

  • Netizens celebrate as India completes a T20I series whitewash with a super over victory against Sri Lanka

Netizens celebrate as India completes a T20I series whitewash with a super over victory against Sri Lanka

In a pulsating finale to the T20I series, the Indian cricket team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, secured a dramatic victory over Charith Asalanka’s Sri Lanka in the third and final T20I at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday (July 30). India achieved a clean sweep in the series, winning 3-0, despite facing a challenging final match that extended into a Super Over. The Indian side emerged victorious from a precarious position, largely due to the exceptional bowling performances of Rinku Singh and Suryakumar in the final overs of the match.

    India’s resilient performance

Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl first, putting India on the back foot early on. The Lankan bowlers restricted the Indian top order significantly, with only Shubman Gill managing to make a substantial impact. Gill scored 39 runs off 37 balls, while the rest of the top-order struggled, with Yashasvi Jaiswal (10), Sanju Samson (0), Rinku (1), Suryakumar (8) and Shivam Dube (13) all failing to contribute effectively. India lost five wickets for just 45 runs, struggling to build a solid foundation.

Despite the top-order collapse, Riyan Parag (26 off 18 balls) and Washington Sundar (25 off 18 balls) provided some valuable contributions. Their efforts, along with Gill’s innings, helped India post a total of 137 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs. Maheesh Theekshana was the standout bowler for Sri Lanka, claiming three wickets.

Sri Lanka’s chase and super over drama

In response, Sri Lanka’s chase was anchored by Kusal Mendis, who scored 43 runs off 41 balls. However, key moments in the match turned the tide in India’s favor. Washington Sundar‘s crucial double-wicket over in the 17th over, where he dismissed two Sri Lankan batters, significantly tightened the contest. When Sri Lanka needed 9 runs from 12 balls, Rinku, making his T20 debut as a bowler, delivered a stunning 19th over. He dismissed Kusal Perera (46 off 34 balls) and Ramesh Mendis, leaving Sri Lanka needing 6 runs off the final over.

Captain Suryakumar took charge of the last over for India and delivered a remarkable performance, taking two wickets and conceding only five runs. This superb bowling effort restricted Sri Lanka to 137 runs for 8 wickets in their 20 overs, and the match proceeded to the Super Over.

The decisive super over: India’s thrilling finish

The Super Over began with Sri Lanka batting first, facing a crucial task to set a challenging target for India. Sri Lanka’s innings nevertheless was quickly disrupted by India’s Sundar, who delivered a masterful performance.

Sundar’s accuracy and composure under pressure were evident as he restricted Sri Lanka to just 3 runs in their Super Over. His first delivery resulted in a single, and he followed up with a well-placed ball that yielded another single. Sundar’s next delivery trapped a Sri Lankan batter in front of the stumps for a critical wicket. After another dot ball and a single, Sundar struck again, taking another wicket and ensuring the Sri Lankans could only manage a total of 3 runs.

With the modest target set, India’s Suryakumar took on the challenge of chasing down the runs. He faced the first ball of the Super Over with intent, and with a powerful stroke, struck a boundary through the infield. This boundary not only secured the winning runs but also sealed the match for India, confirming their clean sweep of the series with a 3-0 victory.

  • After controversially saying ‘won’t watch World Cup,’ Riyan Parag reacts to India’s historic triumph

After controversially saying ‘won’t watch World Cup,’ Riyan Parag reacts to India’s historic triumph

Riyan Parag seems to have developed a knack for creating controversies with bold comments. Every now and then, the youngster finds himself facing backlash from the fans for the same reason.

He recently landed in hot water after saying that he won’t be watching Team India’s games in the recently-concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024 only because he was not in the team. The outspoken youngster had said that while he wants to play in the World Cup, he does not like seeing the games. His comments had come after the selectors ignored him for the T20 World Cup even though he had performed well in the IPL.

Although the uncapped batsman was not really in contention for a spot in the World Cup squad, he might have fancied his chances after enjoying a breakthrough season in the IPL. After failing to live up to the expectations in the previous seasons of the IPL, the Assam star scored 573 runs with the help of 4 half-centuries in IPL 2024. He was the third-highest run-scorer in the competition.

“I’m actually not going to watch. I will only watch the final. I don’t want to watch cricket anymore because I want to play the World Cup. I think it’s a good feeling. I want to play the World Cup, play for the country,” Riyan Parag had said during a chat on TRS Podcast.

Unsurprisingly, the Rajasthan Royals star had faced severe criticism from the fans for his comments. Some even went on to question his patriotism after his surprising comments. Former India pacer S Sreesanth had also criticised the young batter.

Riyan Parag reacts to India’s triumph:

Team India went on to win the T20 World Cup last week. After years of hurt, the Men in Blue finally went all the way in an ICC competition and clinched the trophy. The Rohit Sharma-led side defeated South Africa by 7 runs in a thrilling final to win the T20 World Cup. India clinched the trophy after a long gap of 17 years.

With the entire country celebrating the monumental victory in the T20 World Cup, Riyan Parag has also reacted to India’s triumph. In a video posted by the BCCI, he said that the World Cup will inspire and motivate youngsters across the nation.

“It’s an inspiration for all of us, all the young players that are here in the team. To win a Cup, to win something that is this big in stature, it going to be motivating for all of us and all the youngsters that play cricket in India,” said Riyan Parag.

Meanwhile, the batsman is currently in Zimbabwe for the upcoming five-match T20I series against the hosts. He has earned his maiden call-up from the Indian team and would be hoping to make his debut in the series. The selectors have named a youthful side for the series. Shubman Gill will be leading the team in the series that is scheduled to be played from July 6 to 14.
