    The 22-year-old India National Cricket Team all-rounder Riyan Parag suffered a brain-fade moment in the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka National Cricket Team, which led to him getting castled by Jeffrey Vandersay on Wednesday, August 7, at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.

    Riyan Parag finally got his ODI debut cap in the crucial do-or-die game against Sri Lanka after grinding hard in domestic cricket as well as in the Indian Premier League. He was handed the cap by Virat Kohli, who is the idol of the Assam batter.

    Riyan Parag came in as a replacement for Arshdeep Singh and he showcased a bowling masterclass in the first innings. With his off-spin bowling, he got some crucial wickets and finished with figures of 3/54.

    In the second innings, when he came out to bat, India were in trouble but he batted confidently and hit a couple of boundaries. It looked like Riyan Parag would shine with the bat as well, but he was dismissed in the 16th over, courtesy of a brain-fade moment.

    On the last ball of the 16th over, Jeffrey Vandersay bowled a leg-break to Riyan Parag that went straight. The India batter didn’t cover his stumps and left the ball. It was an absolutely poor leave from the Parag as the ball went on to demolish the stumps.

    Riyan Parag was back in the hut after scoring 15 runs off 13 balls, with 2 fours. He batted with a strike rate of 115.38, and after his dismissal, India lost quick wickets and got bowled out for 138, losing the match by 110 runs and facing a 0-2 series defeat.

    Speaking after the match, Sri Lanka spinner Maheesh Theekshana stated that the series victory over India was a confidence booster for the Lankan Lions. He also added that Indian players are used to playing on flat wickets and smaller grounds but conditions are different in Colombo. He elaborated:

    “For me, it’s a confidence booster as a team. We lost the T20 series 3-0. The whole team was disappointed and we took it as a motivation. Very happy to play the last game and win the series after 1997. It’s a huge victory for us and I am really proud to be part of the XI. 

    “They (India) usually play on good wickets and small boundaries in India. We knew playing in Premadasa, if there’s little bit turn, we can take advantage because we have good spinners. Even in domestic, the wickets will be like this and our batters know how to play. When we were batting first, we thought that the wicket would be much better than the first two wickets.”

    Maheesh Theekshana further lauded Sri Lanka players, including Jeffrey Vandersay, for performing well. He stated:

    “We had to bowl more good deliveries than the last couple of matches. Rohit came into bat and he attacked me, Asitha got a good start, came back and got Shubman and then Wellalage was brilliant, Vandersay did a great job … Hasaranga in the first game, Akila bowled economically in both the games. I wanted to bowl more dot balls. It was a team effort. All the players contributed, that’s why we ended up winning.”

    Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl first, putting India on the back foot early on. The Lankan bowlers restricted the Indian top order significantly, with only Shubman Gill managing to make a substantial impact. Gill scored 39 runs off 37 balls, while the rest of the top-order struggled, with Yashasvi Jaiswal (10), Sanju Samson (0), Rinku (1), Suryakumar (8) and Shivam Dube (13) all failing to contribute effectively. India lost five wickets for just 45 runs, struggling to build a solid foundation.

    Despite the top-order collapse, Riyan Parag (26 off 18 balls) and Washington Sundar (25 off 18 balls) provided some valuable contributions. Their efforts, along with Gill’s innings, helped India post a total of 137 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs. Maheesh Theekshana was the standout bowler for Sri Lanka, claiming three wickets.

When Sri Lanka needed 9 runs from 12 balls, Rinku, making his T20 debut as a bowler, delivered a stunning 19th over. He dismissed Kusal Perera (46 off 34 balls) and Ramesh Mendis, leaving Sri Lanka needing 6 runs off the final over.

    Captain Suryakumar took charge of the last over for India and delivered a remarkable performance, taking two wickets and conceding only five runs. This superb bowling effort restricted Sri Lanka to 137 runs for 8 wickets in their 20 overs, and the match proceeded to the Super Over.

    He recently landed in hot water after saying that he won’t be watching Team India’s games in the recently-concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024 only because he was not in the team. The outspoken youngster had said that while he wants to play in the World Cup, he does not like seeing the games. His comments had come after the selectors ignored him for the T20 World Cup even though he had performed well in the IPL.

    Although the uncapped batsman was not really in contention for a spot in the World Cup squad, he might have fancied his chances after enjoying a breakthrough season in the IPL. After failing to live up to the expectations in the previous seasons of the IPL, the Assam star scored 573 runs with the help of 4 half-centuries in IPL 2024.     Riyan Parag reacts to India’s triumph:

    Team India went on to win the T20 World Cup last week. After years of hurt, the Men in Blue finally went all the way in an ICC competition and clinched the trophy. The Rohit Sharma-led side defeated South Africa by 7 runs in a thrilling final to win the T20 World Cup. India clinched the trophy after a long gap of 17 years.

    With the entire country celebrating the monumental victory in the T20 World Cup, Riyan Parag has also reacted to India’s triumph. In a video posted by the BCCI, he said that the World Cup will inspire and motivate youngsters across the nation.

    “It’s an inspiration for all of us, all the young players that are here in the team. To win a Cup, to win something that is this big in stature, it going to be motivating for all of us and all the youngsters that play cricket in India,” said Riyan Parag.

    Meanwhile, the batsman is currently in Zimbabwe for the upcoming five-match T20I series against the hosts. He has earned his maiden call-up from the Indian team and would be hoping to make his debut in the series. The selectors have named a youthful side for the series. Shubman Gill will be leading the team in the series that is scheduled to be played from July 6 to 14.

Parag found himself in hot water after his YouTube search history was accidentally exposed during a live stream, revealing searches for ‘hot videos’ of Bollywood actresses Ananya Panday and Sara Ali Khan.
