The inaugural season champions will now meet Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Chennai in the Qualifier 2. The winner of this contest will lock horns with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final.

    Batting first, RCB posted a competitive total of 172/8 in their 20 overs. The innings was anchored by Rajat Patidar, who scored a brisk 34 off 22 balls, supported by crucial contributions from Virat Kohli (33 off 24) and Mahipal Lomror (32 off 17). Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, RCB managed to keep the scoreboard ticking, thanks to some lower-order hitting from Swapnil Singh (9 off 4) and Karn Sharma (5 off 4).

    For RR, Avesh Khan was the standout bowler, claiming 3 wickets, but he gave away 44 runs in his 4 overs. Ravichandran Ashwin provided excellent support with 2 wickets for just 19 runs. Trent Boult and Yuzvendra Chahal chipped in with a wicket each, containing the RCB batsmen effectively in the middle overs.

    Chasing 173, RR started strongly with Yashasvi Jaiswal leading the charge, scoring a fluent 45 off 30 balls. Despite some quick wickets in the middle overs, Shimron Hetmyer (26 off 14) and Rovman Powell (16 off 8) ensured RR crossed the finish line with an over to spare, finishing at 174/6 in 19 overs.

    RCB’s bowling was spearheaded by Mohammed Siraj, who took 2 wickets for 33 runs in his 4 overs. Cameron Green and Karn Sharma picked up a wicket each, but their efforts were not enough to stop the RR batters from reaching the target. This victory propelled Rajasthan to the Qualifier 2. Meanwhile, RCB’s journey ended here, as they bow out after a commendable season.

Opting to bat first, RR posted a total of 144 runs for the loss of 9 wickets, with a commendable innings from Riyan Parag (48 off 34). In response, PBKS successfully chased down the target in 18.5 overs, propelled by a notable innings from Sam Curran (63 off 41).
    Despite the defeat for the hosts, Yuzvendra Chahal stole the spotlight.

    During the game, he displayed his brilliance with a spectacular catch to dismiss PBKS batter Prabhsimran Singh. Additionally, Chahal delighted fans by assuming the role of photographer, capturing moments of his teammates before the match at Barsapara Stadium.

    Despite facing their fourth consecutive loss, the Rajasthan Royals would be happy with Riyan Parag‘s form as he displayed maturity and composure, scoring a valuable 48 runs off 34 balls. His innings helped rejuvenate the team’s batting effort, contributing significantly to RR’s total of 144/9 against the Punjab Kings in Match 65 of IPL 2024.

    Interestingly, across his five IPL seasons, Riyan Parag had never reached the 200-run mark in any campaign. However, in his innings against PBKS, he went beyond the 500-run milestone, emerging as the leading run-scorer for his team, eclipsing skipper Sanju Samson for the time being.

    Former Kiwi cricketer and current assistant coach and fast-bowling mentor of RR, Shane Bond, in the post-match press conference, praised Riyan’s abilities and expressed his excitement and satisfaction with his performances. Bond acknowledged the persistent criticism Riyan had faced in recent years and credited him for successfully adjusting to the No. 4 position this season, despite primarily playing in the middle and lower-middle order in previous seasons.

Having joined RR at a young and tender age of 17, Riyan was for a long time positioned in the lower middle-order, where it’s considerably tough to adjust and get the eye in, in a short span of time and deliveries before teeing off. Bond highlighted Riyan’s sensational form this season, recalling his journey from a young recruit to an integral member of the RR setup.

    Riyan Parag was seen in imperious form in the recently concluded Deodhar Trophy 2023 as he finished as the highest run scorer of the tournament with 354 runs to his name from five innings at an average of 88.50 with two hundreds and one fifty. Furthermore, he also smacked most sixes in the tournament (23) and was also the joint third-highest wicket taker (11 wickets). Courtesy of his stupendous show, the 21-year-old was deservedly awarded Player of the Tournament.

    However, things weren’t going smooth for the youngster four months back as he had a rather forgettable season in IPL 2023 where he amassed 78 runs from seven innings and even got dropped from the team. Going through a tough period, Parag turned to star India batter Virat Kohli for advice and his words of wisdom changed his fortunes.

    “Mai puri baat nahi bata paunga (I cannot tell you the exact conversation). He told me ‘something that has worked for half a year cannot be wrong after a few failures. What happens in the IPL is that the tournament goes on so fast that after failing in two games, you start to question yourself. Everyone makes mistakes and I have made tons of them. Two-three games don’t go your way and you feel (the need) to change your process and work ethic,” Parag told IndianExpress.

    Further speaking about his massive trolling on the internet post his low returns in the IPL, Parag stated that people aren’t happy with whatever he does.

    “People have a problem with me chewing gum. If my collar is up that’s a problem. I celebrate after taking a catch that’s a problem. They have a problem with me gaming and playing golf in my off time. I have an idea why people hate me. There is a rulebook about how you should play cricket. The T-shirt should be tucked in, the collar should be down, give respect to everyone, don’t sledge anyone, and I am completely the opposite,” he added.

    Notably, Rajasthan Royals roped in Riyan Parag for INR 3.8 crore during the IPL 2022 mega auction in February 2022. However, his below-par outings for the franchise made him a butt of jokes on social media. But, Parag has silenced his critics in style with his remarkable performances in the Deodhar Trophy.
