  • The new-look Liverpool XI to rival strengthened Arsenal and Man City next term

The new-look Liverpool XI to rival strengthened Arsenal and Man City next term

Liverpool could be set for a summer of upheaval as three of their key players’ futures remain up in the air.

The Reds are in pole position to lift the Premier League title, but they may well have to start planning for life without Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold heading into next season.

There have been growing fears that all three stars could leave Anfield in the summer, when their current contracts set to expire.

As yet, little progress appears to have been made on new deals for the trio, and club legend Robbie Fowler believes it is highly unlikely that each of the iconic figures will stay at Liverpool.

Appearing on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan the day after the Reds’ Carabao Cup final defeat to Newcastle, the former striker hinted at a busy summer ahead on Merseyside.

“From a Liverpool fan point of view, you’re mega disappointed if any of them don’t sign,” Fowler said.

“I don’t think the three of them will, if I’m being totally honest. But it’s going to be one of those things with Liverpool now.

“Certainly after the performance yesterday from some of the players when they’d see him, I think Arne Slot knows that he’s maybe going to have a big summer planned because he’ll probably want to bring his own players in.

“So regardless of those players staying or going, you know that there’s going to be a few incomings anyway. So if it’s those players, so be it.”

With some huge departures potentially on the cards in the coming months, here is how Liverpool could line up next campaign without Salah, Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk.

Goalkeeper Alisson is almost certain to remain first choice between the sticks, having established himself as one of the world’s best in his position.

This is despite the imminent arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili, with a deal already agreed for the Georgian keeper to join the Reds from Valencia in the summer.

Left-back is the first position where fans could see movement, with Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez heavily linked with a move to Anfield.

talkSPORT previously confirmed the Hungarian is on Liverpool’s radar, with a transfer meaning that mainstay full-back Andy Robertson would have to make way for him.

With captain Van Dijk’s future hanging in the balance, having admitted he has ‘no idea‘ if he will be staying or leaving, discussions will surely be taking place over who will partner Ibrahima Konate at centre-back next term.

One player who could fill the Dutchman’s shoes is Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi.

According to the Mirror, the Reds are leading the race to sign the England international, who would prefer a move to the north west ahead of other potential suitors Newcastle and Chelsea.

Meanwhile, should Alexander-Arnold decide on pastures new, with Real Madrid the likely destination, head coach Slot will have to plan for life without the playmaking right-back.

But he may already have a ready-made successor here, with Conor Bradley previously proving himself a more than capable replacement.

The Northern Irishman has established himself as an important squad player since his emergence under Jurgen Klopp, including starting in last year’s Carabao Cup final win over Chelsea.

The midfield will likely look familiar, with Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai all set to retain their spots.

But the league leaders may have to bolster their engine room back-up options, with Harvey Elliott and Wataru Endo both being highlighted as players who could move on in the summer.

Moving into the front line, the potential departure of talisman Salah will have a huge impact on how the league leaders shape up.

While the ‘Egyptian King’ has starred from the right hand side, the Reds have no shortage of attacking firepower out wide, namely in the shape of regular starters Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz.

This could prompt the Reds to deploy the pair on either wing, and instead look to replace the loss of Salah’s huge goalscoring threat by signing a new striker.

Darwin Nunez has been inconsistent leading the line, while injuries have prevented Diogo Jota from a consistent run in the role.

And Fowler has urged his old club to fill this gap by making a sensational move for Newcastle goal machine Alexander Isak.

The Swede has ranked among the Premier League’s top scorers since his move to England in 2022, and currently sits third in the goalscoring charts this term, behind Erling Haaland and Salah.

Liverpool should be pursuing Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, regardless of Mohamed Salah’s future at Anfield.

That’s the view of former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler.

Uncertainty looms over Salah’s future with his contract expiring in the summer and he has done little to suggest he will be at Anfield next season.

Whether Salah stays or goes, Fowler believes Liverpool should enhance their attacking options.

“It’s not just if Mo Salah leaves the club; even if Mo stays, I think they should be going on and getting players anyway,” Fowler told talkSPORT’s Alex Crook.

“You look at the great Manchester United teams of the past, and when they were winning honors under Sir Alex Ferguson, it was maybe one player who was coming in and just giving everyone that little lift.

“He underscored the essential need to add quality players who can truly elevate the team, rather than simply boosting numbers.”

Fowler identified League Cup final goal scorer Isak as a prime target. “If you look at world football at the minute, certainly strikers, there aren’t many about in all fairness,” he explained.

He suggested given how well Isak has done in the Premier League this season then it won’t be seen as much of a gamble.

“I’m sure Liverpool will be getting linked to Isak; I’m sure Newcastle will want to give him a new contract because of the goals and performances, so it will be an interesting summer.”

Isak has shone brightly for Newcastle, showcasing his remarkable talent with impressive statistics.

This season, he has netted 23 goals across all competitions and provided five assists.

Despite his contract running until 2028, his outstanding performances have sparked interest from top clubs, with reports indicating Newcastle values him at £150 million.

Isak joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022 for a reported club-record fee of £63 million and has now marked his 100th appearance for the club.

Despite Liverpool’s Premier League dominance this season, currently sitting 12 points clear of second-place Arsenal, they have fallen short in other competitions.

They lost out on penalties against PSG, ending their hopes and aspirations for the Champions League quarter-finals.

They also faced an early exit in the FA Cup at the hands of unlikely victors, Plymouth Argyle, who triumphed 1-0 back in February.

Then, to top it all off, Isak helped defeat Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday, the very club now keen on harnessing his shooting skills.

Defender Virgil van Dijk is now putting all his focus into winning a second title in five years.

Their lead over Arsenal means another five wins will likely be enough to seal the deal.

“If you win five games – obviously that’s a very difficult job – you’re going to be champions of England,” he said.

“I can guarantee there will be so many difficult moments and you have to be prepared to suffer, whether it is 1-0 down, 2-0, whatever, because you can see the end and you work so hard for that each and every day.

“But we all have to realise the job is not done. We have to work our ass (off).”

He will now be looking to Salah and other experienced teammates to dig in and get over the line.

  • ‘He doesn’t think’ – Fowler gives brutal analysis of Nunez after ‘criminal’ miss

‘He doesn’t think’ – Fowler gives brutal analysis of Nunez after ‘criminal’ miss

Robbie Fowler has condemned Darwin Nunez for ‘criminally’ missing a glorious chance to win Liverpool’s end-to-end clash at Aston Villa.

Nunez was a second-half substitute in the 2-2 draw and at 2-2 he produced a miss of the season contender.

Dominik Szoboszlai was one on one with goalkeeper Emi Martinez but unselfishly played the ball across the box to his onrushing Liverpool teammate.

Nunez had an almost open goal to aim for but sent his effort over the bar to leave head coach Arne Slot in disbelief on the touchline.

“It’s such a simple finish and you’re an elite level footballer. Do your job and just put that in the net,” an unimpressed Dean Ashton said on commentary for talkSPORT.

Liverpool would have likely won and secured a ten-point lead over Arsenal at the top of the Premier League had Nunez scored.

    MORE ON THE PREMIER LEAGUE

However, they failed to do so and legendary Reds striker Fowler, who scored 183 goals for the club, was critical of the Uruguayan.

Speaking to TNT Sports after, he said: “People worry about Darwin Nunez… he doesn’t think about the game enough.”

Fowler added: “Lucy [Ward] and Sam [Matterface] were talking about his confidence on the comms.

“If you’re struggling for confidence, you’ve got to go back to basics, you’ve got to get the ball, you’ve got to touch it and you’ve got to give it five yards.

“You don’t look and dally on the ball waiting for someone to make the run so you can play an unbelievable pass, play the simple things.

“You always need to go back to basics and do the simplicity of being a footballer, what got you into the position of being a professional footballer.”

Fowler later continued: “It’s a bad miss, it’s a really bad miss, probably up there with one of the worst we’ve seen this year.

“I’ll try and help him out a little bit by saying, ‘Szoboszlai maybe should’ve shot himself’.

“But, he’s played a great ball to him and he’s missed the target, criminally from seven, eight yards. That can’t be happening.”

Liverpool boss Slot appeared to hint during his post-match interview that Nunez, who has scored six goals this season, was feeling down.

“If you look at the chances we had in the second half to go in front…” Slot said.

“Yeah, you can understand there’s one person in the dressing room that feels quite down and you know who it is, I think.”

Liverpool took the lead through Mohamed Salah, who eclipsed Cristiano Ronaldo’s best ever Premier League goal contribution tally with the Egyptian now on a combination of 39 goals and assists this season.

Goals from Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins had Villa leading at half time in what was an entertaining contest.

However, the points were shared after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s strike deflected into the back of the net just after the hour mark.

Liverpool remain top of the Premier League and are eight points clear of Arsenal, although the Gunners have played a game less.

Villa meanwhile are ninth in the Premier League and remain in the race to qualify for European football next season.

  • Fowler hits back at ‘disrespectful’ Neville for controversial Class of 92 claim

Fowler hits back at ‘disrespectful’ Neville for controversial Class of 92 claim

Robbie Fowler believes Gary Neville was ‘disrespectful’ to suggest his Liverpool development affected his scoring success for England.

Fowler is one of the Reds’ most successful academy products as he made 369 appearances over two spells, scoring 183 goals.

Although he was prolific at club level, the striker earned just 26 caps for England and netted seven goals during his international career.

Speaking on The Overlap last year, his former Three Lions teammate Neville said: “Can I make a controversial statement? Might not even be controversial.

“Robbie Fowler could have been England’s greatest ever goalscorer, if he hadn’t of grown up in that Liverpool team.”

He then alluded that Fowler would have taken the title if he was part of Manchester United’s famous ‘Class of ’92’, the six young academy stars including Neville that won an iconic treble in 1999.

Liverpool’s trophy haul was far less in comparison to their rivals, who dominated English football throughout the 1990’s.

However, Fowler has hit back at Neville’s suggestion and hinted there was a smaller gap in quality between the two sides than perceived.

“I mean, that’s disrespectful,” he responded after Jim White read out Neville’s quotes on The LineUp for talkSPORT.

“In fact, we were probably close to matching Manchester United. Certainly when I think of maybe ’96, that year we were brilliant, and possibly were better than Man United.

“We were probably inconsistent against to so-called weaker teams, Manchester United used to beat them whereas we maybe struggled to win those games.”

Fowler then mentioned ‘The Spice Boys’, a group of Liverpool players whose name came from rumours that he dated Emma Bunton of the pop group The Spice Girls.

Neville hinted that Fowler would have done better for England away from Liverpool

The Reds icon, alongside co-stars including Jamie Redknapp and Steve McManaman, saw their off-pitch lifestyles widely reported.

Fowler himself said on The LineUp that the term ‘The Spice Boys’ was ‘derogatory’ and explained why he knows why it came into use.

“It came from the late 90’s when we had a bunch of young players, who were supposedly out drinking all the time when we should have been playing games.”

But following on from his response to Neville’s claim, he insisted it wasn’t just he and his Liverpool teammates who went on nights out.

“I know people can bring whatever they want into that, again it’s that conversation with ‘The Spice Boys’, you never took it seriously.

“But I think it’s disrespectful to the players because I played with great players as well… You are like a product of your environment.

“I know Manchester United, their environment was maybe changing in terms of the players looking after themselves a little bit better, but they still went out.

“We know that because we used to bump into them.”

Fowler won five trophies during his Liverpool career and nominated for the Ballon d’Or in 1996 and 1997.

He also played for fellow English giants Leeds United and Manchester City before retiring from his professional career in 2012.

Wright risks Arsenal fans’ wrath with shock remark as he reacts to Klopp’s exit

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has risked incurring the wrath of his beloved fans by admitting he is a closet Liverpool supporter.

The 60-year-old, who is the Gunners‘ second all-time top scorer with 185 goals, made the shock confession when discussing Jurgen Klopp‘s bombshell revelation.

Klopp announced on Friday that he will be standing down as Reds manager at the end of the season to bring an end to nine years at Anfield.

And it’s not just Liverpool fans that have been left in tears by the news, with Wright insisting he has upset by the German’s exit admission.

Speaking on ITV ahead of Liverpool‘s FA Cup fourth round clash against Norwich, he said: “It was a sad day. I was quite sad.

“People say I’m a closet Liverpool fan and if the shock and sadness says that I’m a closet Liverpool fan, then I probably am.

“Because I was really sad to hear the news.”

He put his Arsenal reputation even further on the line when he uploaded a picture of himself and Liverpool icon Robbie Fowler on X.

Captioning the social media post, he referenced Fowler’s nickname by Reds fans, as he simply stated: “God.”

It is the same moniker that the Arsenal faithful dubbed Wright‘s ex-teammate Dennis Bergkamp as.

One eagle-eyed Arsenal fan quickly pointed this out, as he replied by saying: “That’s not Dennis Bergkamp.”

But Liverpool supporters were loving Wright’s disclosure that he has a soft spot for Arsenal’s title rivals, as one X user said: “He’s actually a Red.”

This fan messaged: “Ian Wright is a legend of the game.”

Meanwhile another simply stated: “Always loved Wrighty.”

  • Fowler ‘cannot see Liverpool losing’ to Man City; performs U-turn over top-four prediction

Fowler ‘cannot see Liverpool losing’ to Man City; performs U-turn over top-four prediction

Robbie Fowler has admitted that he “cannot see Liverpool losing” when they face Manchester City at the Etihad this weekend.

Liverpool have been a shadow of their best selves this term after they challenged for the quadruple under Jurgen Klopp during the 2021/22 campaign.

They exited all three cup competitions prematurely and they are now battling for a place in the top-four in the Premier League.

The Reds are currently sixth but they will be level on points with Tottenham as things stand if they win their two games in hand.

Liverpool will be desperate to qualify for the Champions League ahead of their squad overhaul during this summer’s transfer window. Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham, Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Wolves’ Mathues Nunes are among the players they are targeting.

Fowler is wary that “it could stop” Liverpool from buying certain players if they are not playing in the Champions League next season.

“Yes, I think it could be. Players want to come and win trophies and play in the best competitions, so it could stop you from getting that one player you want, but that’s not to say everyone will do the same,” Fowler told bettingodds.com.

“It could put you in a position to miss out on your top targets. I think it’s massively important to get into the Champions League.”

READ MORE: If it’s Manchester City v Liverpool for Jude Bellingham then ‘dispassionate’ follows Haaland

When asked if he would back Liverpool to end up in the top four, Fowler answered: “Yes I would. If you would have asked me a month ago, I’d have probably said no.

“If you put a bit of a good run together now, there’s nothing to say you can’t get there, because you know that the teams around you can struggle as well.

“When you come to the business end of the season, you expect something to happen with Liverpool, they might not be the team they were in the past, but I think they can go on a run of games to get there, these next three games will say everything about Liverpool this year.

“This year with Liverpool, the big games where you need a result, they’ve nearly always got that result. You’ve got the games like Man Utd where they needed to win and did.”

Liverpool beat Man City 1-0 when the sides met at Anfield earlier this campaign. Fowler thinks the two rivals will play out an “entertaining draw” when they face off in the reverse fixture on Saturday afternoon.

“I do not see Liverpool losing this,” Fowler added.

“I may be a little biased but I also don’t see them winning, because I know how good Man City are. So I’m going to go for an entertaining 1-1 or 2-2 draw.”
