Mahrez and Henderson set for Saudi, Newcastle agree Barnes deal, Onana to Man United

Here’s the latest transfer news this morning…

Man United will confirm the signing of Andre Onana from Inter Milan today.

The Cameroon goalkeeper was at Carrington on Wednesday undergoing a medical and has penned a five-year contract.

He is costing the club around £47million and will head to the US on Thursday to join his teammates on their tour.

Newcastle are set to close out a deal for Harvey Barnes.

The Magpies have agreed a fee with Leicester worth more than £35million.

Barnes has already agreed personal terms with Newcastle and will now undergo a medical before flying out to their US tour.

He will be the second major capture for Eddie Howe, following the £53million signing of AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali.
With Barnes arriving, Allan Saint-Maximin is set to depart.

He was absent from the squad for Tuesday night’s 2-1 friendly victory at Rangers and is set for a £20m move to Saudi Arabia.

Liverpool duo Jordan Henderson and Fabinho are both Saudia Arabia-bound.

The Reds have reached an agreement in principal with El Attifaq worth around £12m for the sale of captain Henderson.

Henderson has already agreed terms with the team managed by former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard.

Fellow midfielder Fabinho is also closing in on a move to Al Ittihad.

Man City winger Riyad Mahrez is also heading to Saudi Arabia.

City have agreed a £30m fee with Al Ahli after Mahrez informed Pep Guardiola of his desire to leave.

Mahrez, 32, is set to undergo a medical today and finalise terms.

Chelsea are expected to make an improved bid for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo.

The Blues have seen a £70million offer rejected for Caicedo and are now set to make a revised move of £80m.

Brighton are seeking over £100m for the 21-year-old.

Rashford deal, Evans back at Man United as Onana nears move, Chelsea fail in Caicedo bid

Harry Maguire has been urged to leave Manchester United and depart the Premier League after being stripped of the captaincy at Old Trafford.

That is the view of talkSPORT pundit Gabby Ahbonlahor, who said on the Sports Breakfast: “Sometimes you’re at a club and it’s a big club like Manchester United, you don’t want to leave, you’re captain.

But, the armband being taken off you shows that you’re not going to play enough football next season, and I think Harry Maguire should say to himself, ‘I need to play somewhere, I’ve got the Euros coming’.

“Go and play somewhere, but play at a level where you think you’re good enough to play at, so if I’m him, I’m going to another European league.

“I’m going to Italy, Spain maybe, I’m going to play regular football, because Harry Maguire for me is a top centre-half – just get away from the negativity that seems to follow you at Manchester United.

“I don’t like the way he gets treated by Manchester United fans. If I’m him, I’m leaving the circus.”

Harry Redknapp believes Harry Kane will stay at Tottenham for the rest of his career.

The former Spurs boss says Kane will only look to leave his boyhood club to win trophies, but the only club that can guarantee you success at the moment in England is Man City, and they already have Erling Haaland.

Kane has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich, but Redknapp is not convinced the striker will relocate his young family to Germany.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast this morning, Redknapp said: “Harry wants to win trophies. If he stays in England the only club really you could go to is Man City if you’re going to be guaranteed to win a trophy, everyone else is fighting at the moment.

“I think Arsenal will be close again this year and hopefully Liverpool will push on, but unless you go to Man City there is no guarantee of winning a trophy – and they don’t need him.

“Going to Germany, I really can’t see it.

“He’s got a family, his wife is having another baby, they’re settled here and to go to Germany to go and win the Bundesliga, I just can’t see it.

“I think he’ll stay at Tottenham. I think he’ll finish his career at Tottenham, that’s my opinion. that’s how it see it going.

“Harry got 30 goals last season in a team that wasn’t up there winning anything, he’s just such a special player and Tottenham need him at the club if they’re going to push on.

“If they lose Harry Kane, he’s irreplaceable.

“I’d be surprised if he even moved out of London, let alone going to Germany.”

  • Arsenal to announce Rice and Timber, Spurs to reject new Kane bid, Onana to Man United

Arsenal to announce Rice and Timber, Spurs to reject new Kane bid, Onana to Man United

Tottenham will continue to reject any offers for Harry Kane, talkSPORT understands.

That’s despite reports that Bayern Munich are ready to make another bid worth a potential £68million.

Spurs could lose the striker on a free transfer next summer if they do turn down bids with the 30-year-old in the final year of his current deal.

And the club’s record goalscorer has even been told by a Bayern legend it would be an amazing experience to move to Germany

Bastian Schweinsteiger explained to talkSPORT: “I think that it would be a great fit for him as well.

“He has to ask himself if he wants to win a league, a title in his life as a football player – you know, a championship or a Champions League.

“I know he’s a person who likes to have his family and his friends around him and Munich is the best place for that. You have a beautiful area around where you can live and where your family can grow up and it’s safe.

“Also the experience abroad that I had when I went to Man United helped me a lot and I grew as a person as well and of course as a football player he’d have a very good team around him and a very good coach, so there’s a lot of things are speaking for him in his favour.”

Robin Koch has started the expected exodus at Leeds following relegation from the Premier League by joining Eintracht Frankfurt on loan for the 2023/24 campaign.

The 26-year-old German defender spent three seasons at Elland Road, making 77 appearances.

Koch said on Instagram: “Dear LUFC fans, at this point I look back on three wonderful and exciting years in Leeds.

“To play for Leeds United and in front of you unforgettable fans, to defend for these colours, to celebrate with you, to even lead the team onto the pitch as captain, was a special honor and pleasure during the last three seasons.

“All the moments I have experienced together with you and especially at Elland Road, great victories and bitter defeats, have made me the person I am today.

“These are impressions and feelings that cannot be put into words and that have made me very proud and happy that my path as a professional footballer has led me to this club. I have taken Leeds United into my heart.

“I have met many, many great people here up to this point, and my greatest thanks go to them. To all the people in charge at the club, all the staff, my coaches, my teammates and, of course, you fans!

“I wish the club, the city and all of you only the best and hope that you will remember me well. I will definitely do so. Thanks for everything so far! Yours Robin.”

British acting legend Ray Winstone has rubbished the claims he could be part of the group buying out Southend United and is set for a seat on the National League side’s board.

Speaking exclusively on talkSPORT’s Drivetime yesterday, Winstone – co-founder of agency company ISM -said:“I can’t… I’m part of an agency, so I can’t be part of a board in any way for a football club.

“I did have talks with a certain company about it, because I’ve got a great love for Southend. It was the first team I ever went to see play football when I was a kid.

“My nan lived in Southend and when I was a little kid my uncle Len took me along to see Southend play, so I’ve always had a kind of a little love affair with them.

“I hope someone takes it over and turns it into a blinding club, because it needs some money injected into it.”

Winstone also laughed off the recent suggestions that Hollywood star and former WWE wrestler Dwanye ‘The Rock’ Johnson is also part of the takeover of the Essex club.

He added: “Can you imagine, me and The Rock? No, a bit of Brighton rock or Southend rock, that’s about it!

“But no, there are people banding things around, it’s a load of rubbish. I don’t know.

“I think the people going into Southend have great intentions of actually doing some good stuff there, they want to develop the stadium there and with that kind of facility they’re talking about, good players will want to go there at that level and hopefully it will stand them in good stead for the future.”

  • Gerrard wants Henderson in Saudi, Arsenal close in on Timber, Mount to Man United imminent

Gerrard wants Henderson in Saudi, Arsenal close in on Timber, Mount to Man United imminent

Simon Jordan believes that Steven Gerrard’s imminent move to Saudi Arabia won’t do his managerial reputation any good, describing it as ‘a financial decision’.

TalkSPORT understands that the Liverpool legend is set to accept a lucrative offer with Saudi Arabian side Al Ettifaq, something that Jordan believes will prove to be a short-sighted move on his part.

Speaking on White and Jordan, he said: “These are not football decisions, they are financial decisions. No one can sit here and suggest that if they were in a position where they were offered the money that they wouldn’t think about it themselves.

“If you want to make a football decision that is going to take you on a journey that will make you a very successful manager and you back yourself, then you don’t need to go to Dubai or the Middle East or wherever he’s [Gerrard] going.

“In this instance, this is not a football decision, he’s not going to advance as a coach, he’s not going to enhance his reputation amongst those eyes that might look at him and go, ‘oh look at what you did in the Saudi league.’

“They’re not going to suggest that a Premier League job is going to come available as a result of that, so it’s a financial decision. So let’s characterise it for what it is.”

Luton have completed the signing of Mads Andersen for an undisclosed fee.

The central defender arrives at the club from Barnsley after making 167 appearances for the Tykes over a four-year period since joining from Danish side Brondby.

Now his task will be to try and help the Hatters to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Manager Rob Edwards said: “I’m really pleased to get Mads on board. He has been on our recruitment team’s list for a long time now. We watched a lot of him last season and he’s performed really well and consistently for a prolonged period in English football.

“He’s someone who can play anywhere across that back three for us. He’s a real good defender, someone who loves defending, and we like ours to be able to do that. But he can play, and there is room to grow, like with anyone we want to bring in and sign.

“He’s going to bring real good quality and competition into that position, with us obviously losing Sonny Bradley this summer, but the position we see Amari’i Bell in now, Mads’ arrival gives us real quality and competition in that area.

“He’s a really good person, when I spoke to him, it was clear that he’s so ambitious to play in the Premier League and very driven and determined to get into his national team, but first and foremost, he’s determined to get into our team, to play and be consistent.

“We’ve got high hopes for Mads and are really pleased to get the deal done.”
