Three ways Arsenal could start next season with Rice and Havertz – but no Partey

Mikel Arteta is expected to reshuffle his Arsenal line-up next season in what promises to be a hectic summer transfer window at the Emirates.

With the Gunners back in the Champions League for the first time since 2017 and now genuine Premier League title contenders, Arteta knows he has to strengthen his squad.

And the Spaniard is also aware he has to be ruthless in parting ways with some of his key players that helped the club finish second in the table.

Fan favourite Granit Xhaka is set to be sold to Bayer Leverkusen – despite enjoying a renaissance at the Emirates in the 2022/23 season.

And his midfield partner Thomas Partey could also be moved on, with it believed that discussions have already taken place over his potential exit.

West Ham skipper Declan Rice is the club’s No.1 target, with Arsenal prepared to bid up to £100million after having a first offer rejected.

Versatile Chelsea forward Kai Havertz has also been the subject of a failed proposal, but Arsenal remain confident an agreement can be reached.

And Southampton starlet Romeo Lavia is also on the club’s radar to provide depth in the defensive midfield position.

But where would all the players fit in should the trio be signed? Here talkSPORT.com takes a look at three possible formations Arsenal could use next term.

Whatever system Arteta chooses to play, he is unlikely to tinker at the back in the Premier League and Champions League.

England international Aaron Ramsdale would start between the sticks, with Ben White and Oleksandr Zinchenko to slot in as Arteta’s inverted full-backs.

Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba, who is set to sign a new long-term contract, will almost certainly be the preferred centre-back partnership.

In midfield is where things get interesting, as Arteta has a decision to make over where he would play Havertz.

Utilised as an attacking midfielder by Bayer Leverkusen, the German has been tasked with leading the line for Chelsea which has hindered his natural ball-playing abilities.

Should Arteta decide against starting him up top, he could be used as a No.8 alongside captain Martin Odegaard.

This would see Rice deployed as the lone defensive midfielder, with Lavia forced to settle for a place on the bench.

Gabriel Jesus would then keep his spot as Arsenal’s centre-forward, with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli used on the wings.

This could be one way Arsenal may start next season with Rice and Havertz

However if Arteta looks to use Havertz as an option upfront, this would see him having to change up his midfield.

Lavia, should he be brought in, may then be used in the No.6 role, with Rice and Odegaard to start as the box-to-box midfielders.

Havertz could feature as a false No.9 – playing in a slightly deeper role than what Jesus would do to help out with the transitions in attack.

Saka would again start down the right flank, but Martinelli could be left out to accommodate his Brazilian compatriot Jesus.

Havertz playing up top could see Lavia come into the starting XI, and Jesus moved out wide

Alternatively, Arteta may decide to abandon his usual 4-3-3 formation, and instead look to take a leaf out of Pep Guardiola’s book.

The Manchester City boss enjoyed great success using the 3-2-2-3 formation at the back end of the 2022/23 season, which saw the Citizens win the treble.

Should Arteta take a gamble on this system, it would see Ramsdale yet again start in goal, with White, Saliba and Gabriel to be the three defenders, resulting in Zinchenko being benched.

A defensive midfield pairing would then consist of Lavia and Rice, with Havertz and Odegaard to slot in behind Jesus.

Martinelli would then feature down the left channel, with Saka to start on the opposite flank.

Maddison to Newcastle, Ward-Prowse and Harrison to move on – the top XI relegated stars

The Premier League season is over and several top stars are facing the prospect of life in the EFL.

Football is a team game and therefore every player associated with Southampton, Leeds and Leicester is responsible for the predicament that their clubs find themselves in.

That said, certain players are simply far too good to be playing in the Championship.

The relegated trio all have stars who are likely to be back in the Premier League next term, if not, they could be competing in one of Europe’s top divisions.

So who are the players who could have earned a move away? talkSPORT.com takes a look.

Gavin Bazunu is a player who undoubtedly deserves another crack at the Premier League having joined from Manchester City last summer.

At 21 years of age he’s only going to get better and so would be a shrewd addition for any top flight side.

His teammate Tino Livramento is one of the best young righ- backs in the Premier League, but missed most of the 2022/23 campaign through injury.

That said, he certainly doesn’t deserve to be playing in the second tier, something that can also be said for Arnel Bella-Kotchap who is bound to attract attention.

Leicester’s Luke Thomas may also be on the move with the 21-year-old left-back fine performaer for the Foxes at a young age.

Romeo Lavia is another ex-Man City youngster who has impressed for Southampton this term and with Chelsea reportedly keen, it seems likely that he’ll get a chance to fulfill his undoubted potential at the top level.

Youri Tielemans is certain to leave Leicester with his contract due to expire this summer, meaning that he’ll be playing his football elsewhere, while James Ward-Prowse will also move on.

The Southampton skipper has admirers at Tottenham and West Ham and is set to lead the list of departures on the south coast.

James Maddison will also certainly be heading for the exit door at Leicester, particularly after scoring 10 goals and bagging nine assists in such a hard season for the Foxes.

Newcastle and Tottenham are said to be keen and the former can offer him Champions League football.

Maddison’s Leicester teammate Harvey Barnes is also wanted with the Magpies and Spurs again interested and a valuation of £40m.

Leeds are already preparing for Jack Harrison to leave the club, with Aston Villa and West Ham interested.

It’s suggested that he has a release clause in his contract, meaning that the creative winger could move on for a cut-price fee.

  • Guardiola given closer look at potentially perfect £40m Chelsea target in Manchester City cruise

Guardiola given closer look at potentially perfect £40m Chelsea target in Manchester City cruise

Romeo Lavia showed a technical ability perfect for Manchester City, yet also enough room for improvement to make Pep Guardiola salivate over a £40m return.

There is an obvious argument to be made for Liverpool, but the Premier League opponent Pep Guardiola has felt most intrinsically linked to since arriving as Manchester City manager in summer 2016 could be Southampton.

They are the team against whom Manchester City secured their status as Centurions, the side which so attracted the Spaniard’s Nathan Redmond-directed ire, the club that raided the Etihad academy for talents to polish and eventually move on last summer.

One such gem might be returned to sender sooner than first envisaged. Gavin Bazunu, Samuel Edozie and Juan Larios will find their respective levels eventually but Romeo Lavia has already proven himself to at least eventually belong in such esteemed company.

“I am really impressed with what Romeo has done and is doing,” Guardiola said before the champions embarked on their weekend trip to St Mary’s. “We had, and we have, an incredible opinion about him. We thought to keep him, but maybe he would not (get) enough minutes like he has in Southampton.”

It might be a stretch to suggest Manchester City regret selling the teenage midfielder, but Lavia has been an island of excellence in a sea of general ineptitude at Southampton. He is one of few who will emerge from credit in this likely relegation season.

Those Manchester City fingerprints can be seen on the Belgian in each game and early on this was no different. The way he pauses and takes an extra moment to plot a pass through the swarm of opposition bodies mixes beautifully with an ability to launch and lead counter-presses of his own. There were times when Guardiola’s side genuinely struggled to get close to him in the first half.

As can be expected, that faded as legs and the mind – both individual and collective – started to toil against the imposing Manchester City tide. Lavia offered as little resistance as his teammates once Erling Haaland opened the scoring on the stroke of first-half stoppage-time.

Ruben Selles was yelling at the midfielder for not offering a passing angle to Bazunu at 2-0 down. Haaland made it three a few minutes later and within a quarter of an hour of that Lavia was taken off due to injury, the score having tailed off at 4-1.

That is the balance Southampton have had to try and strike with a 19-year-old whose physical development is yet to match his technical promise. A hamstring problem sidelined Lavia throughout September and October and he has completed a full 90 minutes in the Premier League only five times since August.

There remain flaws to coax and coach out beyond that. Selles and Nathan Jones share little in common but both have taken public aim at Lavia’s shortcomings this season. The latter highlighted a need to “show more domination in the games, more domination in possession and more leadership on the pitch if he wants to become the thing everyone is saying he is” in March, adding that: “I have no doubt he will be there but he needs to make more steps and everyone around him needs to be calmed down.” The manager then dropped him for the defeat to Brentford, driving the point home.

Jones faced criticism for similar remarks about controlling games. In both cases, the understandable impulse was to try and temper expectations. The compliment was that they felt the need to. And as effusive as Guardiola was in his praise, he has not worked as closely with the player as either of them.

To stand out at 19 in a team bound for the Championship is impressive, even with that obvious room for improvement. Manchester City inserted a £40m buy-back clause – and ensured it would only be activated in 2024 – for a reason. With more time and experience he could adorn the club with far more malleable magnificence than he had when he left. That was and certainly remains the plan.

The only variable might be interest from further afield. Todd Boehly can hardly be described as a visionary but Chelsea’s £50m approach for Lavia in September was just the first example of substantial eyes being cast on the midfielder; Arsenal and Man Utd are thought to have entered the fray since.

With most clubs looking for midfield reinforcements this summer, and a great deal of the attention being dominated by Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice, Lavia could be the perfect alternative for a side with as much patience as it has money. While this is a rougher diamond which might need more polishing now, it has the potential to shine even brighter.

Guardiola ‘really impressed’ with ex-City midfielder as Chelsea plot summer move

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has revealed how pleased he is with the progress Romeo Lavia has made at Southampton.

The 19-year-old has shined for the Saints, with talkSPORT understanding that Chelsea hold an interest in a potential transfer.

Lavia signed for Southampton last summer on a five-year deal after making two senior appearances at City, who are believed to have inserted a £40million buy-back clause into his contract which will be eligible in 2024.

His debut campaign on the south coast has been impressive to say the least, making 25 appearances across all competitions.

Despite losing the youngster from their academy, Guardiola is pleased to see the midfielder doing so well.

Speaking ahead of City’s trip to Southampton this weekend, he said: “I am really impressed with what Romeo has done and is doing.

“We had, and we have, an incredible opinion about him.

“We thought to keep him, but maybe he would not [get] enough minutes like he has in Southampton.”

Should Lavia continue his fine form, then he could find himself taking another step up in his career as Chelsea explore a potential move.

The Blues are set to step up their efforts to sign the Belgian in the summer.

Chelsea attempted to sign him just weeks after he completed his switch to Southampton.

However, should the Saints be relegated from the Premier League this season, then they may have no option but to cash in on one of their star players.

A move to Stamford Bridge would see Blues co-owner make yet another signing on top of their near £600m spending spree since last summer.

Their current focus though is on searching for their next permanent manager following the departure of Graham Potter, with Frank Lampard back as interim boss until the end of the season.
