Man United players ‘not good enough’ as five initially named by Ratcliffe

Sir Jim Ratcliffe claims there are players in the Manchester United squad who are not good enough to play for the club and ‘overpaid’.

Over the last ten years, the Red Devils have forked out over £1billion on transfer fees.

In fact, United are second to only Chelsea in terms of the most spent on transfers in the last five years.

Yet the large investments into the playing squad have largely failed to transform the club’s fortunes on the pitch.

It has come to a head this season as United are on course for their lowest-ever finish in the Premier League era having come eighth in what was an all-time Premier League low last season.

Although a multitude of factors across the board have contributed to the Red Devils’ demise, the level of quality amongst the players and the transfer fees attached are two of the biggest according to Ratcliffe.

In an interview with the BBC, Ratcliffe pointed out such were the high fees for five players, United will only fully pay off their transfers this summer.

Ratcliffe name-dropped Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana, Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and Antony as ‘players we are buying this summer, that we didn’t buy’.

“These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we’ve inherited those things and have to sort that out,” Ratcliffe said.

“For Sancho, who now plays for Chelsea and we pay half his wages, we’re paying £17million to buy him in the summer.”

When pressed whether he had suggested the five players named weren’t good enough for United, Ratcliffe replied: “Some are not good enough and some probably are overpaid, but for us to mould the squad that we are fully responsible for, and accountable for, will take time.

“We’ve got this period of transformation where we move from the past to the future.

“There are some great players in the squad as we know, the captain is a fabulous footballer.

“We definitely need Bruno (Fernandes), he’s a fantastic footballer.”

With United’s many financial missteps in the transfer market in previous years, it makes manager Ruben Amorim‘s job to improve their fortunes on the park that much harder.

Amorim, who has lost eight of his 17 Premier League matches in charge, was only able to sign one player of his choosing in the January window.

That was left-back Patrick Dorgu, who joined from Serie A side Lecce for upwards of £29m.

Given Ratcliffe’s claims about the state of the squad, it explains why he’s given Amorim a pass mark in terms of his results since taking over last November.

“If I actually look at the squad which is available to Ruben, I think he is doing a really good job to be honest,” Ratcliffe said.

“I think Ruben is an outstanding young manager. I really do.

“He’s an excellent manager and I think he will be there for a long time.”

Amorim will look to continue earning Ratcliffe’s backing when United host Real Sociedad for the second leg of their Europa League last 16 tie, live on talkSPORT.

The contest is evenly poised at 1-1 following the first leg in San Sebastian.

‘Not good enough’ and ‘overpaid’: Man Utd co-owner blasts recent signings in fiery interview

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has blasted some of his troubled club’s stars as “not good enough” and “probably overpaid”.

Ratcliffe has endured a dismal start to his reign at Old Trafford since taking charge of footballing operations in February last year.

The British billionaire named Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana and Casemiro, Jadon Sancho and Antony as the chief causes of his frustration.

Sancho and Antony are currently on loan at Chelsea and Real Betis respectively after underachieving with United.

In reference to United still paying instalments of transfer fees on several out-of-form players, Ratcliffe, who shares ownership of United with the US-based Glazer family, told the BBC: “If you look at the players we are buying this summer, that we didn’t buy, we’re buying Antony, we’re buying Casemiro, we’re buying Onana, we’re buying Hojlund, we’re buying Sancho.

“These are all things from the past, whether we like it or not, we’ve inherited those things and have to sort that out.

“For Sancho, who now plays for Chelsea and we pay half his wages, we’re paying £17 million to buy him in the summer.”

Asked if he was suggesting those players were not good enough for United, Ratcliffe said: “Some are not good enough and some probably are overpaid, but for us to mould the squad that we are fully responsible for, and accountable for, will take time.”

After United finished eighth in the Premier League last season and won the FA Cup, Ratcliffe and his United advisers opted to stick with boss Erik ten Hag despite their poor form for much of the campaign.

The Dutchman was subsequently sacked in October and replaced by Ruben Amorim after United endured another wretched run.

Premier League wrap: Arsenal fall behind | 03:13

INEOS chairman Ratcliffe has accepted the decision to keep Ten Hag was a mistake.

He applied the same verdict to his decision to hire Dan Ashworth as sporting director, a role he left in December after just five months.

“I agree the Erik ten Tag and Dan Ashworth decisions were errors,” the 72-year-old said.

“I think there were some mitigating circumstances, but ultimately they were errors. I accept that and I apologise for that.”

Despite United’s struggles since Amorim took charge, leaving them 14th in the Premier League, Ratcliffe insisted he would keep faith with the former Sporting Lisbon boss.

“If I actually look at the squad which is available to Ruben, I think he is doing a really good job to be honest,” he said.

“I think Ruben is an outstanding young manager. I really do. He’s an excellent manager and I think he will be there for a long time.”

Backing Amorim’s decision to allow England forward Marcus Rashford to join Aston Villa on loan, Ratcliffe said: “He wants a dressing room that is full of people who are totally committed to winning football matches.

“He won’t tolerate people who don’t have 100 percent of that attitude. The players have to be in the same box.”

Arteta departs after title race question | 00:34

Ratcliffe made his incendiary comments on United’s moribund team just 24 hours after thousands of fans took part in a protest against the club’s ownership ahead of Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Angry chants were directed at the Glazers and Ratcliffe, whose controversial off-field decisions have included a mid-season ticket price hike, as well as 200 anticipated redundancies among staff after 250 jobs were cut last year.

Ratcliffe claimed the “unpleasant” cost-cutting measures were “necessary” because the club would “run out of money at Christmas if we don’t do those things”.

Stressing his “only interest here is returning Manchester United back to greatness again”, Ratcliffe said Amorim would have money to spend in the close-season to improve his squad.

United haven’t won the Premier League since 2013, the last season of Alex Ferguson’s legendary spell as manager.

While they have a huge task to close the gap on champions-elect Liverpool in future, Ratcliffe insisted his aim of winning the league by 2028, the club’s 150th anniversary, was “not impossible”.

‘Unacceptable’: Arsenal boss storms out of interview, left fuming as grim PL reality sinks in

Declan Rice’s equaliser denied Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim a much-needed win but Arsenal’s faltering Premier League title challenge suffered another damaging blow in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Gunners sit 15 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool, now with just one game in hand, with their focus beginning to turn to holding off the chasing pack for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Bruno Fernandes’ stunning free-kick put United ahead in first-half stoppage time.

The Red Devils, though, could not hold on for just a sixth Premier League win in 16 games under Amorim as Rice swept home on 74 minutes.

United missed a string of late chances to win the game, with a point leaving them down in 14th.

PL WRAP: Chaotic’ Spurs rally saves Ange’s blushes; bitter rival lands brutal title blow on Gunners

“How we conceded chances in certain moments was not acceptable,” said Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta.

“They have so much quality and they pick the right player and normally that would end in a goal.

Utd coach full of praise for Fernandes | 00:48

“We opened the gate to lose the game. there was no chance to lose the game and we opened it ourselves. I will defend my players all the time but in those moments we have to do better.”

Arteta, however, was in no mood to answer questions about the club’s failure to make signings in January amid a striker injury crisis, or about its stuttering title challenge.

The Arsenal boss awkwardly ended a post-match interview abruptly when asked about both matters.

Asked if he regrets not signing a striker in January, Arteta shook his head, said ‘no, it’s not about that’, then started trying to exit.

Stopped and asked for one more question, Arteta paused. But when the interviewer started to point out the 15 gap to Liverpool in the title race, the Spaniard said ‘no’ and completed his walk off.

Spurs salvage draw against Bournemouth | 01:30

Also feeling the heat will be United boss Amorim.

United have had three permanent managers and an interim during Arteta’s five years in charge of Arsenal.

Amorim said he knows he will not get the time Arteta did to turn around a sinking ship at Old Trafford.

The discontent among the home support could be seen around the stands with many taking part in a protest by wearing black over what they perceive as “the death” of their club.

“This club will never die, that is clear,” said Amorim. “You feel it in the streets. This is a big business and maybe all the fans in this league sometimes feel it is harder to go to the games and pay for tickets.”

Arsenal had failed to score in either of their previous two league games to realistically wave goodbye to their hopes of a first title in 21 years.

Premier League wrap: Arsenal fall behind | 03:13

Despite still missing the attacking quartet of Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, the Gunners hit back in stunning fashion to thrash PSV Eindhoven 7-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Infused with fresh confidence, Arsenal started on the front foot but again missed the focal point of a natural centre-forward.

Midfielder Mikel Merino has been forced to deputise upfront in recent weeks and fired wide from the edge of the area with an early opening.

United have struggled for goals all season, but their skipper has remained a source of inspiration and Fernandes produced once more with a sumptuous free-kick just before halftime.

Questions will be asked over Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya’s starting position, but Fernandes still had to whip the ball over an imposing wall and back down into the visitors’ net.

Spurs suffer huge Europa League blow | 01:41

    – Raya rescues Arsenal –

If Raya was at fault for the opener, he made amends with a string of saves in the second period.

Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee were the first to be denied as United threatened a second on the counter-attack.

Arteta was able to throw on Martinelli on his return from a hamstring injury in the hunt for an equaliser.

Instead, it was Rice who matched Fernandes’ fine finish by arrowing a shot beyond Andre Onana from Jurrien Timber’s pass.

Amorim had dropped Rasmus Hojlund to the bench after a run of 19 games without a goal.

The Dane should have ended that streak when he allowed Rice to get back and make a goal-saving challenge.

More Raya heroics followed to stop Fernandes from snatching a winner as the match entered stoppage time.

However, a draw did little for Arsenal’s title challenge.

Arteta’s men edge four points clear of third-placed Nottingham Forest and eight clear of Manchester City in fifth in the battle for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Man United vs Arsenal predicted line-ups, team news and how to follow clash

Manchester United have nine injury issues for their crunch Premier League clash against old rivals Arsenal this weekend.

Ruben Amorim‘s nightmare start to life at Old Trafford went from bad to worse as the Red Devils crashed out of the FA Cup on Sunday.

The Portuguese manager saw his side, who won the competition under his predecessor Erik ten Hag, fall to Fulham on penalties.

Amorim‘s latest disappointment comes amid United languishing in 14th in the Premier League table and desperately needing a win.

To add insult to injury, another two senior stars picked up fitness issues against Fulham and are now doubts over their involvement.

Arsenal will be buoyed by their historic 7-1 win over PSV in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16.

However, the Gunners have faltered domestically in recent weeks, following a goalless draw with Nottingham Forest, which was preceded by a home defeat to West Ham.

Arsenal are now a whopping 13 points behind leaders Liverpool, albeit with a game in hand, and Mikel Arteta has vowed not to give up on his club’s title challenge.

    Manchester United

United‘s England contingent continues to thin, with Harry Maguire forced off just before extra-time during the Red Devils’ FA Cup exit.

He hasn’t trained this week, but unlike compatriots Luke ShawKobbie Mainoo, and Mason Mount, should still be fit to feature this Sunday.

Manuel Ugarte similarly picked up a ‘minor knock’ against Fulham and faces a race against time to be named in the XI against Arsenal.

Amorim’s absentee list also includes Lisandro Martinez, Amad, Jonny Evans, and Altay Bayindir – with Patrick Dorgu still suspended.

Andre Onana will continue between the sticks, with Amorim’s preferred three centre-backs lined up in front of him.

Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro will flank Maguire if the latter is available, with Victor Lindelof waiting in the wings to deputise.

Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot are likely to remain the two wing-backs, despite the latter’s red card at the Emirates in January.

United captain Bruno Fernandes will hope to be joined by Ugarte in midfield but Casemiro may be needed instead.

Alejandro Garnacho is set to come into Amorim’s three-pronged attack, with Joshua Zirkzee playing in behind Rasmus Hojlund.

Former Arsenal starlet Chido Obi-Martin will be itching to face his old side having not been registered for the Europa League on Thursday.

Arteta was afforded the opportunity to withdraw several of his key stars early in midweek such was his side’s dominance over PSV.

Ethan Nwaneri, Mikel Merino, Thomas Partey, and Jurrien Timber were all substituted early in order for them to remain fresh here.

However, Myles Lewis-Skelly – who was fortunate to avoid receiving a third red card of the season – may be taken out of the limelight.

Riccardo Calafiori underlined his credentials with an impressive outing from the bench as he later scored Arsenal’s seventh goal.

The Italian has struggled with injuries this term, but may finally have the chance to stamp his authority on a Premier League match.

Ben White is still building up his fitness, with Kieran Tierney, Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Raheem Sterling all returning to the bench.

The rest of Arsenal’s team selection will be dictated by the club’s own injury crisis, with Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz the chief absentees.

Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus, and Takehiro Tomiyasu are still on the long road to recovery as well.

  • ‘I did an investigation’ – Amorim dishes out unique punishment to Garnacho

‘I did an investigation’ – Amorim dishes out unique punishment to Garnacho

Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho’s substitution strop is set to cost him, but not in the form of a fine.

Garnacho was the unlucky individual who got substituted for tactical reasons after defender Patrick Dorgu was sent off in the first half of United’s 3-2 win over Ipswich Town on Wednesday.

    4

Garnacho went straight down the tunnel after being substituted against IpswichCredit: Getty

But instead of sitting on the bench and watching the remainder of the half, Garnacho headed straight down the touchline and into the tunnel at Old Trafford.

The young Argentine also posted a picture of himself looking disappointed on the pitch on social media after the game, apparently to voice his displeasure at the decision… despite United actually winning the match.

In his post-match interviews Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim confirmed he would speak to the forward about the incident.

Former Wales international and talkSPORT pundit Dean Saunders took a stronger stance on the issue and warned Garnacho his attitude was ‘going to ruin his career’ if he kept it up.

But speaking at his press conference on Friday, Amorim confirmed the reason behind Garnacho’s mid-match dash was nothing sinister.

However, the 20-year-old would still be punished given the negative perception it gave off as Amorim looks to set high standards – by buying the entire team dinner.

“He came to me,” Amorim said.

“Was funny because the next day he came to me to my office. I did some investigation and he went to the dressing room, changed his clothes because he was wet, he watched the game not on the bench and at the end of the game he was there and went home. So there is not an issue there.

“He’s a young kid that will learn. The important thing was the next morning he was speaking with me. I think we need to see that small things like walking out onto the pitch – because (Joshua) Zirkzee did the same thing and the context was different – but it was the same thing.

“We have to understand the situation, the context, the age of the players, of course they have to be better.

“They have to understand perception here is really important. But you can deal with that the next day and move on so let’s just move on.

“But I told him at Manchester United, everything is important and the perception in a big club is really important. So he is going to pay a dinner to all the team and that’s it.

“I think he (Garnacho) understands. But, like I said, [the players] read everything, all the small things. And I know the players quite well, I played for quite a while, I understand they are frustrated. He was subbed, he was playing well and has to go off in that moment of the game.

“It’s hard to deal with everything but they have to deal with everything. I just try to help them be better footballers.”

Despite Garnacho and Amorim clearing the air regarding what happened against Ipswich, the Argentinian is no guarantee to feature for United’s FA Cup fifth round tie against Fulham on Sunday.

“He has a knock,” Amorim said.

Ruben Amorim, manager of Manchester United, looking dejected.

    4

“When he went to shoot, was blocked almost inside the box. He has a knock, I expect for him to be ready but we will see.

“I have to wait until tomorrow.”

A win over the Cottagers on Sunday would be United’s third in their last five across all competitions.

The Red Devils have already beaten Fulham twice this term, with both league fixtures ending 1-0.

Victory for United on Sunday would also be the second time in the last three campaigns the English giants have beaten Fulham three times in a single season.

The two teams met in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup during the 2022/23 season at Old Trafford, as United ran out 3-1 winners over a nine-man Fulham.

  • Scrapping hot lunches, 200 more redundancies… Man Utd outline latest cost cutting measures

Scrapping hot lunches, 200 more redundancies… Man Utd outline latest cost cutting measures

Manchester United said Monday they expect to make up to 200 fresh job cuts as part of a “transformation plan” to improve the club’s financial sustainability.

Around 250 employees were made redundant last year in a first wave of cost-cutting measures after INEOS chairman Jim Ratcliffe bought a stake in the Premier League club.

United have also increased ticket prices despite a backlash from supporters. They said in a statement on Monday that the plan “aims to return the club to profitability after five consecutive years of losses since 2019”.

“This will create a more solid financial platform from which the club can invest in men’s and women’s football success and improved infrastructure,” the statement said.

“As part of these measures, the club anticipates that approximately 150 to 200 jobs may be made redundant, subject to a consultation process with employees. These would be in addition to the 250 roles removed last year.”

United CEO Omar Berrada said the wide-ranging measures were being implemented to “transform and renew” the club.

“Unfortunately, this means announcing further potential redundancies and we deeply regret the impact on those affected colleagues. However, these hard choices are necessary to put the club back on a stable financial footing,” he said.

“We have lost money for the past five consecutive years. This cannot continue.

“Our two main priorities as a club are delivering success on the pitch for our fans and improving our facilities. We cannot invest in these objectives if we are continuously losing money.”

Accounts released by the club last week showed they paid a total of £14.5 million ($17.5 million) to get rid of manager Erik ten Hag, sporting director Dan Ashworth and other members of football staff.

Ruben Amorim was appointed as United boss in November following Ten Hag’s sacking but he has been unable to reverse the decline of the team, who are 15th in the Premier League after a 2-2 draw with Everton at the weekend.

United’s women’s side have enjoyed more success this season, with the team second in the Women’s Super League table.

Despite their financial struggles Manchester United were fourth in Deloitte’s annual Football Money League of the world’s richest clubs, published last month.

‘Very, very angry’: Arsenal coach fumes after title bid rocked; Man Utd rally amid late drama — EPL Wrap

Mikel Arteta has slammed Arsenal for being ‘nowhere near the levels’ required to win the Premier League following his side’s 1-0 loss to West Ham.

Meanwhile troubled Manchester United rallied from two goals down in a 2-2 draw at Everton.

Jarrod Bowen’s strike just before half-time at the Emirates proved to be the difference as the Gunners dropped to their third defeat of the season with their 15-game unbeaten streak coming to an end.

A red card to Myles Lewis-Skelly in the 73rd minute did little to help Arsenal’s cause as they missed out on the chance to cut Liverpool’s lead at the top to five points.

And Arteta was left bitterly frustrated as Arsenal created next to nothing as they lost at home to the Hammers for the second successive season.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, he said: “Very disappointed, obviously very angry as well.

“We didn’t hit the levels of today and I am very much responsible of that so I am very, very angry.” Arteta also refused to use the lack of attackers at his disposal as an excuse for his side’s toothless display up front.

Mikel Merino, a central midfielder, was named up top for the Gunners with Leandro Trossard and Ethan Nwaneri on the flanks.

In total, Arsenal took 20 shots, but just two of those landed on target. Yet Arteta bemoaned a lack of quality from his entire squad as the primary reason for the defeat.

“I refuse that completely because I am talking about the standards of the players and the team that we played today, me included,” he remarked.

“That was nowhere near the levels that we have to hit to have the opportunity to win a Premier League.

Match Stats “We were very consistent, yes, but football is about what you do today and today, nowhere near.” The loss to West Ham now leaves the Gunners’ title hopes hanging by the thinnest of threads.

With Liverpool drawing to Everton and Aston Villa recently, Arsenal had the chance to keep the pressure on Arne Slot‘s men.

But the loss to West Ham leaves the margin at eight points with 12 games remaining ahead of Liverpool’s clash away at Manchester City on Sunday.

“I think you have to congratulate West Ham for the victory and the game that they played,” Arteta added.

“But as well I think a lot from our side that we never got right and they didn’t allow us to get enough momentum, enough sequence of play with positive action that could deliver into situations of threat for them.” Arteta and his troops must now quickly switch focus to Wednesday’s trip to high-flying Nottingham Forest.

He will also be without Lewis-Skelly as one of his defensive options. The teenager brought down Mohamed Kudus as the Ghanaian looked to break towards goal with no defensive cover nearby.

It was initially given a yellow card, but following a VAR review, it was upgraded to a straight red.

Wild Melbourne derby ends in draw | 01:49

Lewis-Skelly’s sending off was his second in his last four league fixtures, with the other coming in a 1-0 win over Wolves. However, it was later overturned upon appeal.

At Goodison Park, United were headed for a ninth defeat in their last 13 league games as goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure put Everton two up inside 33 minutes.

Ruben Amorim’s team had not mustered a shot on target until Fernandes’ free-kick pulled a goal back 18 minutes from time before Manuel Ugarte’s equaliser salvaged a point.

More late drama was to come as Everton were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage-time, only for referee Andy Madley to overturn his decision after a VAR review.

“We just played one half and we managed to draw the game. We didn’t exist in the first half,” Amorim said after his 15th-placed side’s dismal run extended to just four wins in 15 league games.

    SPURS BACK ON TRACK

Tottenham eased the pressure on boss Ange Postecoglou with a 4-1 win at third-bottom Ipswich.

Brennan Johnson put Tottenham ahead in the 18th minute with a tap-in from Son Heung-min’s cutback.

Johnson was on target again eight minutes later, netting with a clinical strike from another Son assist.

Omari Hutchinson pulled one back for Ipswich in the 36th minute. But Djed Spence’s deflected 77th minute shot and Dejan Kulusevski’s 84th minute finish wrapped up Tottenham’s second successive victory.

Wolves boosted their survival bid with a priceless 1-0 win at 10-man Bournemouth.

Bournemouth had Illia Zabarnyi sent off late in the first half when his foul by Rayan Ait-Nouri was upgraded from a yellow to red card after VAR intervened.

Nunez shocker leaves coach breathless | 00:25

Wolves took advantage in the 36th minute as Nelson Semedo’s cross was missed by Dean Huijsen and Matheus Cunha steered his shot past Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Vitor Pereira’s team are now five points clear of the relegation zone as fifth-placed Bournemouth’s top four hopes suffered a setback.

Joachim Andersen’s own goal put his former club Crystal Palace on course for a 2-0 win at Fulham.

Daniel Munoz’s 66th minute blast wrapped up Palace’s latest success on the road. Southampton slipped closer to relegation after a 4-0 defeat against south-coast rivals Brighton at St Mary’s.

Joao Pedro, Georginio Rutter, Kaoru Mitoma and Jack Hinshelwood’s 82nd minute effort condemned bottom of the table Southampton to a 21st defeat in 26 league games this season.

Southampton are 13 points from safety with 12 games left to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

Chelsea travel to Aston Villa looking to bolster their top four push in Saturday’s late game.

Moyes out to pile more misery on former club Man United – talkSPORT coverage

David Moyes will welcome his former club Manchester United to Goodison Park this afternoon, aiming to continue his dream return.

The Toffees have won four of their last five Premier League games and that has seen them rise well clear of the relegation battle.

In fact, they now sit above Man United thanks to their incredible form under Moyes since he returned to Merseyside in January.

So, Everton will be heading into this game against the Red Devils confident of a result, with Ruben Amorim’s side still enduring misery.

Amorim has only won four times in the league since his arrival and, after back-to-back losses without scoring, pressure is building on him to turn things around.

Everton vs Man United: It’s Moyseh

Moyes was once labelled the biggest fool in Manchester during an iconic fan rant when he was in charge of Man United.

And he’s enjoyed getting some revenge on his former club in recent years.

This weekend, he’ll be aiming for his third straight home Premier League win against the Red Devils after winning his last two with West Ham.

During his first spell with Everton, he won his last home game in charge against United too, beating them 1-0 in August 2012.

So, Moyes seems to be an expert at overcoming his old side in front of his own fans and that bodes well for this clash at Goodison Park.

Everton have not lost at home under the Scotsman since his return and they will fancy their chances against a struggling United.

Amorim will need a result to make sure he doesn’t get handed Moyes’ old label…

    • Everton have lost their last five Premier League games against Manchester United, failing to score in the last four. They last lost five consecutive league games without reply against an opponent vs Wolves between 1957 and 1960.
    • Man Utd have won their last two away league games against Everton, winning 2-1 in October 2022 and 3-0 in November 2023. They last won three in a row at Goodison Park in September 2007, while they last kept back-to-back clean sheets at the Toffees in August 1997.
    • Everton have won four of their last five Premier League games (D1), more than they had in their first 20 (W3 D8 L9). This is the latest into a season they’re facing Man Utd while above them in the table since their 35th game in 2013-14 (Everton 5th, Man Utd 7th).

Everton vs Man United: Team news

Everton aren’t likely to make any changes to their team after beating Crystal Palace last time out.

Carlos Alcaraz has been impressive since signing in January and will start along with in-form Beto who has prospered replacing the injured Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Abdoulaye Doucoure will return from suspension but may not come straight back in, while Orel Mangala, Dwight McNeil, Seamus Coleman and Iliman Ndiaye are out.

As for United, they will be without Amad Diallo and Kobbie Mainoo again as both players are set to miss extended periods.

Luke Shaw remains out along with Mason Mount, Jonny Evans and Lisandro Martinez who is another long-term absentee.

The large amount of injuries means Amorim doesn’t have too much to work with and he may name an unchanged side after defeat to Tottenham.

Patrick Dorgu will continue at wing-back while Joshua Zirkzee sits in behind Rasmus Hojlund, with a host of academy products on the bench.

    • Manchester United have scored just one first half goal in their last 10 Premier League games, with that a Bruno Fernandes penalty against Brighton in January. It’s the longest run of games the club have ever had in the competition without scoring a non-penalty goal in the first half, overtaking a run of nine matches from February to May 2021.
    • Everton have scored at least twice in each of their last three Premier League home games, last having a longer run between October and December 2017 (5). The Toffees have scored 12 goals in their last five Premier League games (home and away), more than they had in their previous 16 (11).
    • Only bottom side Southampton (7.9%) have a lower shot conversion rate than Manchester United in the Premier League this season, with the Red Devils’ 8.4% their lowest in a single campaign since 2004-05 (8.2%).

Everton vs Man United: What has been said?

United legend Rio Ferdinand is worried that his old club could be relegated

“Only Wolves and West Ham separate my club from the relegation places,” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel.

“Do you realise we’re that close? Someone said we need 11 points just to stay up.

“I’ve got the fixture list: Everton away, Ipswich at home, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest away.

“Before hosting Man City, and going to Newcastle away, and then Wolves, Bournemouth, Brentford, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Leicester.

“The only place I see us getting anything – and I’m not even saying a win – is Leicester.

“I’m not seeing wins. That’s the problem.”

Rio Ferdinand fears Man United won’t win another game this season

Everton sit above Man United in the Premier League table
    • Manchester United have failed to score in 10 different Premier League games this season, with only Everton (12) doing so more often. It’s the joint-most games in which the Red Devils have failed to score in a single season in the competition, along with 2004-05 and 2015-16.
    • Everton forward Beto has scored four goals in his last three Premier League games, as many as he had in his first 44 appearances in the competition. He’s averaging a goal every 88 minutes and has a shot conversion rate of 40% under David Moyes, compared to a goal every 290 minutes and a 7.4% conversion rate under Sean Dyche.
    • Beto has scored in each of his last three Premier League appearances – the last Everton player to score in four consecutive games was Richarlison in March 2021, while the last to do so under David Moyes was Mikel Arteta in April 2010.

‘HUGE STEP BACK’ FOR FOXES IN HISTORIC LOW

Leicester’s bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League hit a historic low as Brentford cruised to a 4-0 win at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side would have moved out of the relegation zone with a victory, but instead they remain two points from safety.

Yoane Wissa, Bryan Mbeumo and Christian Norgaard all scored for Brentford in a wretched first half for second-bottom Leicester.

Fabio Carvalho netted in the closing stages and the Foxes were booed off after a 10th defeat in their last 11 league games that added to the pressure on the under-fire Van Nistelrooy.

Underlining the depth of their struggles, Leicester made unwanted history as the first ever team in the English top-flight to lose six successive home games without scoring in any of them.

“You have to acknowledge it’s a huge step back. There was hope after recent performances, the beginning of the game was hopeful with three chances,” Van Nistelrooy said.

“After the bright start we were never in the game again and at half-time the game was done. Everyone is going home gutted with the loss and disappointed with the levels we showed.” With just 12 games left to avoid relegation, Leicester are in severe danger of an immediate return to the Championship.

Enzo Maresca quit to take charge of Chelsea after masterminding Leicester’s promotion last season and the club’s Thai owners have failed to find an adequate replacement for the Italian.

Steve Cooper was sacked after just five months in charge and former Manchester United striker Van Nistelrooy has fared no better.

Leicester have won just four of their 26 league games this season, with Van Nistelrooy contributing only two of those victories in 15 matches.

MOYES ‘DOING A BETTER JOB’ THAN UNITED BOSS

Ruben Amorim admits David Moyes is doing a better job reviving Everton than the under-fire Manchester United boss has been able to achieve in his short spell at Old Trafford.

Amorim will go head-to-head with Everton boss Moyes on Sunday as he looks to drag United out of their shocking decline.

The former Sporting Lisbon boss has overseen just four wins and eight defeats in the Premier League since replacing Erik ten Hag in November.

Moyes, who was sacked by United in 2014 after less than a season in charge, has already matched Amorim’s win total in just six league games since returning to Everton in January.

Everton, in 14th place, are above 15th-placed United in the table ahead of the clubs’ final ever meeting at Goodison Park before the Toffees move to a new stadium next season.

Asked why Everton improved their fortunes with a new boss unlike United, Amorim said: “Simple thing. David Moyes is doing a better job than me. It’s quite simple.

“And then small things like winning one game, winning two games, that belief. The pressure is also not the same.

“I don’t know but I think we have to give merit to the players of Everton and especially to the coach of Everton and that’s all. We need to do the same.” It was a candid admission from Amorim, who has previously acknowledged that Ten Hag and United interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, now in charge at Leicester, did better than him at Old Trafford this season.

Moyes was sacked by United after just 10 months in charge following a 2-0 loss at Everton and a defeat this weekend would increase the pressure on Amorim, whose approach has reportedly left some players unconvinced.

“I don’t feel it in training,” Amorim said. “If you watch our games sometimes you can have that sensation, but I’m not worried about that.

“If they are not convinced, I don’t feel that. It’s my job to change their minds and I’m quite good on that.” Amorim insists he has no regrets taking a job he had initially preferred to wait for until the summer, allowing him to finish the campaign with Sporting and start afresh.

“I think that is clear, it’s common sense, when you start a season it’s completely different,” he said.

“You have time to think things, to feel the players, to have pre-season, to change things that you feel are necessary in a team, in a squad. That is clear.

“That was the choice, so I don’t want to talk like that. I had my reasons to ask for that and I have the most important reasons to accept the job.

“I knew it will be tough and the risk. I know that but it’s Manchester United and you cannot say no.” Asked if he ever questioned whether it was the right decision to join United, he said: “No. We make a decision and then we go all the way. Of course, sometimes it’s really frustrating.”

Ange’s path to trophy revealed; heavyweights cop brutal fixtures in Europa League draw

Ange Postecoglou’s path to deliver a trophy to Tottenham has become clearer, after the Spurs were confirmed to play AZ Alkmaar in the next stage of the Europa League.

Manchester United were drawn to play Real Sociedad of Spain in the last 16 of this season’s Europa League, while Rangers will take on Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce.

Ruben Amorim’s United are struggling in the Premier League this season but finished third in the league phase of the Europa League.

They will travel to San Sebastian for the first leg on March 6 before the return a week later against a Real Sociedad side who reached this stage after beating Midtjylland of Denmark in the play-off round.

The clubs have met several times in European competition in recent years, with United winning a Europa League knockout phase play-off tie in 2021 before both sides each won away from home in the group stage in 2022/23. They also faced off in the Champions League group stage in 2013.

Whoever wins will advance to a last-eight tie against either Lyon or FCSB. The Romanians lost 2-0 at home to United in their last game in the group phase last month.

“It was everything” – Spurs sweep Man U | 01:49

Fenerbahce will welcome beaten 2022 finalists Rangers to Istanbul for the first leg of their tie in a competition coach Mourinho won with United in 2017. He also won its predecessor, the UEFA Cup, as Porto boss in 2003.

If Fenerbahce win, Mourinho could come up in the quarter-finals against one of his old clubs in Roma, with whom he won the Europa Conference League in 2022.

However, Claudio Ranieri’s Roma face a tough task in the last 16 against Athletic Bilbao, who are determined to go all the way to this season’s final, which will be played at their San Mames home on May 21.

‘Bigger club with bigger pressure” | 00:46

Spurs will go to the Netherlands for the first leg of their last-16 tie against AZ, who they defeated 1-0 in the league phase in October.

If they win, Ange Postecoglou’s team could be back in the Netherlands in the quarter-finals, with the victors in that tie playing either Ajax or 2022 tournament winners Eintracht Frankfurt.

Spurs and Manchester United cannot meet until the final, but the Old Trafford club could face either Mourinho’s Fenerbahce or Rangers in the last four.

Last season’s Conference League winners Olympiakos of Greece will play Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt in the last 16, for the right to take on either Lazio — who finished first in the league phase — or Viktoria Plzen of the Czech Republic in the quarters.
