Hollywood actor loses his mind over taunt as new biggest name in US hoops goes off… again

    Remember the name Caitlin Clark.

The 22-year-old, who has already rewritten the college basketball record books, took another step to greatness on Tuesday AEDT with a blistering performance to lead Iowa to the Final Four of the NCAA tournament.

In a blockbuster rematch of last year’s NCAA championship game, the Iowa Hawkeyes defeated the LSU Tigers 94-87 in a thrilling Elite Eight match-up in Albany, New York.

Clark scored nearly half her team’s tally, finishing with 41 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds.

She made nine three-pointers and every one of them was crucial as scores were tied 45-45 at halftime.

Clark nailed dagger after dagger, prompting a hilarious reaction from LSU’s Hailey Van Lith, who could only shrug her shoulders when Clark drained a three-pointer after being defended closely.

It was a revenge game for Clark, who took bragging rights over Angel Reese after the LSU centre pointed at her ring finger and taunted Clark with the John Cena ‘You can’t see me’ gesture after winning last year’s title.

Actor and Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis couldn’t get enough of the action, mimicking Reese’s taunt in the stands as Clark went berserk on court.

Reese brushed aside talk of the rivalry pre-game, saying she and Clark don’t hate each other. But the loss means LSU are eliminated and Reese and coach Kim Mulkey’s dream of going back-to-back is over.

Iowa will face either Southern California or Connecticut for a spot in the championship game, while South Carolina and North Carolina State will battle it out in the other Final Four match-up.

A NCAA championship is the one title Clark hasn’t won. Earlier this season she became the highest scoring player, male or female, in NCAA Division 1 basketball history.

In the victory over LSU, she also broke the previous record for the most three-pointers in Division 1 history (537).

“This one feels a little bit better,” Clark said after the win.

“It’s my senior year with this group, and a lot of people counted us out at the beginning of the year.

“And all we did was work really hard … But the job’s not finished.”

Clark rattled in four of her three-pointers in the third quarter to help take the game away from LSU and stay on track for a fairytale ending to her collegiate career.

“I think just confidence, being confident in all the work that I put in, trusting my teammates,” Clark said of her third quarter scoring spree.

“We knew it was going to be physical but we weathered every storm. But you’ve got to give them a lot of credit they had a great year.”

Basketball fans and commentators were simply in awe of Clark’s shooting ability as she dragged Iowa over the line.

ESPN’s commentator Ryan Ruocco exclaimed at fulltime: “Galactic greatness from Caitlin Clark on display yet again!”

NBA commentator Molly Morrison wrote on X: “Never thought i’d see someone else with the same shooting abilities as steph but caitlin clark is HER.”

Shea Serrano posted: “Caitlin clark hitting a goofy 28-footer fading left over van lith after van lith missed a wide open 3 is very much a f*** you from caitlin lol what a monster.”

Women’s hoops host LaChina Robinson said: “This game came down to Caitlin Clark. Period. Game over.”

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde said: “Watching Clark shoot is just a thrill. Epic performance.”

Neroli Meadows added: “Atmosphere in the NCAA Elite 8 sounds unreal. Clark v Reese… love to see it.”

Clark is regarded as one of the greatest players — male or female — in the history of college basketball, an iconic, generational talent who this season overtook 1960s star Pete Maravich as the all-time leading scorer in collegiate hoops.

Her lethal shooting from beyond the arc has drawn comparisons to WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu and NBA three-point scoring leader Steph Curry — who faced off in a three-point contest at the NBA All-Star weekend in January.

Clark is set to be taken with the No. 1 pick in the WNBA Draft by the Indiana Fever.

Her career has sparked a commercial bonanza for college basketball, attracting sellout crowds and drawing huge television audiences.

Her impact — dubbed the “Caitlin Clark Effect” has been compared to singer Taylor Swift and has even seen her followers dubbed “Clarkies”, mirroring Swift’s fervent fanbase of “Swifties”.

Rule changes to US college sports have allowed her to accept endorsement deals with such sponsors as Nike, Gatorade and State Farm, even finding her way onto TV commercials while still in school.

    MPCA coaching announcements, recruiting news

Preparations are ramping up for the 2023-24 cricket season, with a dozen announcements made by Mornington Peninsula clubs in recent days. Here’s the latest.

Frankston YCW has signed an exciting young batter straight out of Premier Cricket.

Josh Edwards, 20, has played for Frankston Peninsula for the past four seasons, scoring 1198 runs, at 26.62.

He played in the Heat’s fourth XI flag last year.

Before that Edwards played in three senior premierships at Langwarrin, including a Provincial flag in 2018-19, as a 15-year-old.

Newly appointed Frankston YCW senior coach Simon Draycott played with Edwards at Frankston Peninsula and is thrilled to secure a player of Edwards’ talent.

“I’m reuniting with a premiership teammate which is very exciting,” Draycott said.

“He’s a gun, and I think his record shows that.

“He scored a hundred (for Langwarrin) against YCW in a junior granny going back six or seven years.

“At Frankston he’s won multiple batting averages in the thirds and fourths and has showed his class in many games.”

Draycott said Edwards joins a lot of his mates at YCW, including Ben Williams, Mark Fisher-White and Kaedyn Hodgson.

The Stonecats will field a talented, youthful side next season.

“I’m just super excited because I think it sets up the club long term,” Draycott said.

“If that group sticks together and plays some really good cricket I think they can go far.”

    BIRCH BUZZ AT BLUES

    What a lifter for Hastings.

The Blues have appointed club favourite son Tim Birch as senior coach for the 2023-24 season.

Birch is a two-time 1st XI premiership player for Hastings, a club champion and team of the decade member.

His appointment has created a buzz at the Blues, who suffered a winless season in MPCA District last season.

“After a taste of returning to cricket last season, ‘Burger’ is keen to hit the ground running and bring the club renewed success,’’ Hastings said.

    WILLO TO LEAD DUCS

Moorooduc has appointed club stalwart Nick Williams as senior coach.

Williams has been a loyal and successful player for the Ducs over the past two decades after coming through the club’s juniors.

“Nick is a one-club player, life member and has been a part of our leadership group over the last few years,’’ Moorooduc said.

“He will bring fresh ideas, fresh opportunities and a passion for success and will oversee all training programs with a focus on team, hard work, improving our skill level and enjoying our cricket and will be available for all teams.’’

Moorooduc has also appointed Mark Huggard as senior batting coach and Ken Cremen as senior bowling coach and chairman of selectors.

    BILLY TAKES REINS

Pines has locked in leading player Billy Humphrey as senior coach.

Last season he often opened both the batting and bowling for the Piners with good success, totalling 208 runs with the bat and grabbing 23 wickets with the ball.

    MOUNTIES RETAIN STAR

Mt Eliza has re-signed reigning John Hille medallist Rashmika Opatha.

“Rash is coming off a great season, where he produced over 600 runs, he performed well with the ball and in the field, and his season was recognised by the MPCA when he was judged to be the best player in Peninsula grade and awarded the John Hille medal,’’ the club said.

    EAGLES MAKE KEY APPOINTMENT

Somerville has appointed Tom Angelico as junior development coach, taking over from Jack Barbour.

Angelico has an extensive background in coordinating and coaching junior sport which makes him perfect to fill this role.

    BATTING BOOST FOR COUGARS

A handy bush recruit for Carrum Downs.

Cam Muir joins the Cougars after many seasons with Tallarook in Central Victoria where he played as an attacking top order batsman.

Carrum Downs has also picked up a couple of English overseas players.

    CRIBBY ADD VERSATILE PLAYER

Kayne Barton has joined Crib Point from Balnarring.

“He will be a fantastic addition to our young playing group as a keen, versatile player,’’ Crib Point said.

“Off field, Kayne will be an amazing asset for our club as he is seen as a tireless worker throughout the Crib Point sporting clubs, but it is on field where we are expecting him to truly thrive.’’

    KNIGHTS NEWS

Ballam Park has announced Gary Lewis as head coach and Zac Clements as 1st XI Captain for the 2023-24 season.

Clements took the reins as captain midway through the 2022-23 season, leading a young 1st XI squad, and he also had a great year with the bat, hitting 405 runs.

Floppers beware! NBA clamps down on polarising act as new rule changes revealed

NBA team owners approved rule changes on Tuesday creating an in-game flopping penalty and expanded coach’s video replay challenge starting next season, the league announced.

The NBA’s Competition Committee — which includes players, coaches, referees, club owners, team executives and representatives from the National Basketball Players Association — unanimously recommended both changes to the full board of team owners.

The new flopping rule, adopted on a one-season trial basis, says that when a game official calls a player for a flop — a motion deliberately trying to entice a referee foul call on another player — an offending player will be issued a technical foul and the opposing team will be awarded one free throw attempt.

A player will not be ejected from a game based on flopping violations. Referees will not be required to stop play to call a flopping violation, allowing teams with an offensive opportunity to keep going until the game’s next natural stoppage.

Referees can call both a foul and a flopping violation on the same play.

While flopping violations are not reviewable under a coach’s challenge, they can be called during a referee’s replay review triggered by a coach’s challenge or a referee-initiated replay review of certain types of called fouls.

The NBA will continue to look at flopping after games, with fines modified to match technical fouls, starting at $2,000 and increasing for repeat offenders.

The coach’s challenge change gives teams a second challenge if their first challenge is successful.

Teams must continue to use a time-out to trigger a challenge. They would not be able to challenge without a time-out available.

Teams can continue to keep the time-out after a first challenge if successful but will not retain the time-out used for a second challenge whether or not it is successful.
