SA20: Sunrisers Eastern Cape beat Pretoria Capitals in summit clash to clinch the title

In the final match of the SA20 tournament, the Pretoria Capitals took on the Sunrisers Eastern Cape at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday, February 12. The Sunrisers won the toss and elected to bowl first.

The Capitals were just able to muster 135 runs before being bundled out in 19.3 overs. Kusal Mendis (21 off 19) was the only batter to cross the twenty-figure mark. Roelof van der Merwe was the standout bowler for the Sunrisers, taking 4 wickets and conceding 31 runs.

In response, the Sunrisers made a strong start with Adam Rossington scoring 57 runs off 30 balls. Despite some hiccups in the middle, the Aiden Markram-led side was able to reach the target with 22 balls to spare and four wickets in hands. Thanks to all-rounder Marco Jansen who hit the winning runs with a four and a six on successive deliveries.

With this victory, Sunrisers became the champions of the inaugural SA20 tournament.

Brief scores: Pretoria Capitals 135 in 19.3 overs (Kusal Mendis 21; Roelof van der Merwe 4/31, Ottniel Baartman 2/22) lost to Sunrisers Eastern Cape 137-6 in 16.2 overs (Adam Rossington 57, Aiden Markram 26; Anrich Nortje 2/21) by 4 wickets.

Pretoria Capitals beat Paarl Royals by 29 runs in the first semi-final of the SA20 2023 to book a place in the final on Tuesday (February 8). Facing each other in less than 24 hours in different cities, the Capitals posted a total of 153/8 while batting first with Rilee Rossouw scoring a fifty. Then Adil Rashid and James Neesham shone with a ball to bowl out the Royals for just 124 runs in 19 overs.

David Miller won the toss and elected to field first at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg with two changes to the playing XI. Tabraiz Shamsi and Dane Vilas came in place of Mitchell van Buuren and Codi Yusuf while the Cpitals remained unchanged after their thumping 59-run win over the Royals in the last match.

Miller’s decision to bowl first seemed successful with Bjorn Fortuin taking Kusal Mendis’s early wicket, who smashed 80 off 41 in the last game. Stand-in skipper Theunis de Bruyn and Phil Salt struggled to time the ball and go big in the powerplay overs. The returning Shamsi dismissed both de Bruyn and Salt, and the Capitals were struggling at 53/3 in nine overs.

But the in-form Rilee Rossouw stood firm at one end and kept the runs flowing steadily. He reached the fifty with a big six and guided Pretoria Capitals to a fighting total of 153 in 20 overs. Rossouw scored 56 off 41, and Eathan Bosch contributed a crucial 22 from 10. Andile Phehlukwayo took three and Shamsi grabbed two big wickets for the Royals.

The Royals struggled in their chase from the get-go and were under early pressure. Bosch dismissed Jason Roy for a duck on the innings’ second delivery and took a big wicket of Jos Buttler’s in the third over. Two early dismissals forced the Royals under pressure as they kept failing to form meaningful partnerships.

Adil Rashid dismissed Dane Vilas and Paul Stirling, while Rossouw took Eoin Morgan’s valuable wicket in the 12th over. James Neesham bowled out Evan Jones for a duck in the 14th over and the Royals were struggling at 94/6 after 14 overs.

Miller kept the Royals’ hopes alive by dragging his team to closer to the target but struggled to go big. Royals needed 30 off the last 12 balls but Anrich Nortje’s double-wicket maiden over ended the Royals’ resistance in style. Nortje, Rashid, and Neesham grabbed two wickets each to boost the Capitals to the final with a 29-run win.

WATCH: Anrich Nortje delivers a rocket 152 km/hr delivery to dismiss Jason Roy in SA20 2023

Pretoria Capitals locked horns with Paarl Royals (PR) in match no. 30 of the ongoing SA20 2023 at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Tuesday (February 7) and won the contest by 59 runs.

Asked to bat first, PC started well and put up a mammoth 226/5 total on the board in their 20 overs. Kusal Mendis (80) and Colin Ingram (41) were the highest run-getters for their team, while Philip Salt (39) also contributed to the team’s total.

On the other hand, Lungi Ngidi scalped two wickets for PR, with Codi Yusuf and Andile Phehlukwayo also picking up a wicket each.

In reply, David Miller-led PR failed miserably in the run chase and managed to score just 169 in 20 overs. Jos Buttler (70) batted well for his team but unfortunately couldn’t get his team through and ended up on the losing side. Meanwhile, James Neesham grabbed three wickets for PC and guided his team to victory. Anrich Nortje also picked up a wicket for PC in the contest.

On the third ball of the 4th over, Nortje delivered a 152 km/hr ripper to dismiss Jason Roy. The 29-year-old pacer bowled a lightening angled-in delivery to Roy which the right-handed batter failed to get his bat onto and was found Leg Before Wicket (LBW) by the on-field umpire Marais Erasmus.

Roy was seen a bit shocked following the sensational delivery by Nortje, while the PC teammates celebrated the dismissal.

    Here’s the video:

Notably, this was the last league stage match of the SA20 2023, and PC have finished at the top spot of the points tally with this win. Both PC and PR will once again meet each other in the first semi-final on Wednesday (February 8) to battle for a place in the summit clash.

The other semi-finalists of the maiden tournament include Faf du Plessis-led Joburg Super Kings and Aiden Markram-captained Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

MI Cape Town’s poor SA20 2023 campaign ended with another big loss against Joburg Super Kings in the 29th match on Monday, February 6. Uncapped English batter Leus du Plooy top-scored with 81* off 48 to help Joburg Super Kings post a big total of 189 runs while batting first, and then Kyle Simmonds put on a masterclass with three wickets to earn a big 76-run win.

Playing in their last group-stage game, Rashid Khan won the toss and elected to field first at The Wanderers in Johannesburg. His decision instantly succeeded with George Linde dismissing the opponent’s captain Faf du Plessis, the tournament’s leading run-scorer, on the innings’ first delivery.

English pace all-rounder Sam Curran dismissed Reeza Hendricks for a duck in the very next over and the Super Kings were struggling at 12/2 in two overs. But du Plooy eased off the pressure by smashing 18 runs to star English pacer Jofra Archer in the third over. He kept the scoreboard moving from one end but the Super Kings lost the wickets from another.

In his only third SA20 game, Matthew Wade smashed 40 off 18 to keep the Super Kings on track for a big total. Leus du Plooy remained unbeaten at 81 as Joburg Super Kings posted 189/6 in 20 overs. Sam Curran and Jofra Archer took two wickets each, but Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan struggled for wickets with costly spells.

MI Cape Town’s batters struggled for a good start as Maheesh Theekshana took the early wicket of Wesley Marshall in the third over. In-form Rassie van der Dussen started well again but could not convert his 20 off 15 into a big knock.

Kyle Simmonds, the South African spinner, dismissed van der Dussen and Roelofsen in the eighth over, and MI Cape Town never recovered. Australian big-hitter Tim David smashed two sixes and a four but was caught while playing a big shot over long-on.

Young prodigy Dewald Brevis scored 27 off 26 but struggled for big shots throughout the game. Gerald Coetzee knocked over Brevis to end Cape Town’s innings for just 113 runs in 17.5 overs. Simmonds and Coetzee took three each while Theekshana bagged two crucial wickets for the Super Kings.

Durban Super Giants registered an emphatic win against the table-toppers Pretoria Capitals in the 28th match of the ongoing SA20 league. Powered by a magnificent unbeaten century from Heinrich Klaasen and a quickfire opening stand by Quinton de Kock and Ben McDermott helped Super Giants to win the match by a big margin of 151 runs.

Durban Super Giants scored a mammoth 254 for 4 in their 20 overs. De Kock (43 off 20) and McDermott (41 off 24) put up a partnership of 76 runs for the first wicket in the powerplay. Thereafter, it was the Klaasen show all through as he remained unbeaten on 104* off 44 balls scoring 10 fours and six sixes.

Accompanied by Matthew Breetzke, who scored a blistering unbeaten 46 runs off 21 balls with five fours and three sixes, piloted the Super Giants to go past 250. For the Capitals, Migael Pretorius turned out to be the most successful and yet the most expensive bowler, having conceded 62 runs in his four overs and took 2 wickets. Meanwhile, Neesham and Josh Little shared a wicket each.

Chasing the total, Pretoria started losing from the very second over of the innings. DSG bowlers kept sending the PC batters back to pavilion at regular intervals. The table topper got bowled out for just 103 runs in 13.5 overs. Junior Dala took 3 wickets in his four overs conceding 33 runs. Dwaine Pretorius and Wiaan Mulder took 2 wickets, while Keemo Paul and Reece Topley shared a wicket each.

Hundred for Henrich Klaasen from just 43 balls in a match when Durban needs to win with a bonus point. One of the best knocks ever in SA20.

@CricCrazyJohns That Breetzke guy had one shot. Crouch low, extend his arms. Literally One shot for every ball. Yet he scored like 35 runs in his last 10 balls. Says a lot about quality of bowling.

SA20 2023: Twitter reacts as Pretoria Capitals pour more misery on bottom-placed MI Cape Town

Get every cricket updates! Follow us on

High-flying Pretoria Capitals continue to dominate the inaugural SA20 2023 tournament with a thrilling last-ball victory over MI Cape Town, in the 26th match held on Saturday. MI Cape Town were bowled out for just 159 runs while batting first with Capitals’ pacers proving too strong.

Thereafter, Rilee Rossouw’s quickfire knock of 40 runs and Senuran Muthusamy’s vigilant 25 runs proved enough for the Capitals to register their sixth win from the opening eight group-stage games. The Capitals became the first team to reach the playoffs this season, while the bottom-placed MI Cape Town got eliminated from the top-four race with just one game in hand.

Wayne Parnell won the toss and invited Cape Town to bat first at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. In an unusual move, Rassie van der Dussen opened innings alongside Wesley Marshall, with the latter playing his first SA20 game. Parnell dismissed Marshall in the fourth over and MI Cape Town struggled to contain early damage.

In-form speedster, Anrich Nortje, took early valuable wickets of Dewald Brewis and Tim David to add more pressure on MI Cape Town. But van der Dussen kept the scoreboard moving with an admirable fifty. Young South African pacer, Ethan Bosch, bowled out van der Dussen in the 12th over and MI Cape Town’s innings eventually collapsed on just 159 runs in 19.4 overs. Rassie top-scored with 51 runs off just 29 deliveries with four boundaries and four maximums while James Neesham, Bosch, and Nortje took two wickets each for the Capitals.

Kusal Mendis gave the Capitals a quick start with three boundaries in innings’ first over. Mendis along with Phil Salt pulled off a quick 50-run partnership for the opening wicket, which proved crucial at the end. MI Cape Town made an instant comeback with Sam Curran dismissing both Mendis and Salt in the sixth over. Mendis scored 39 runs off 25 balls, while Salt added just nine runs to the opening partnership.

Things got worse for the Capitals with Rashid Khan dismissing Theunis de Bruyn just two deliveries after Mendis’ departure and the Capitals were struggling at 54/3, after seven overs. But Rilee Rossouw’s blitzkrieg changed the momentum to put Capitals back in the driving seat.

Marco Jansen dragged the game to the last over by scalping two wickets in the 18th over. But Muthusamy held his crease, which propelled the Capital’s win in the last over. He got caught out when Capitals needed two runs from last three balls. But Joshua Little smashed two runs on innings’s last ball to guide his team to a one-wicket win. Meanwhile, some fans shared their views on the match over the social media.

Twitter Reactions: Durban Super Giants snap losing streak in last-over thriller against MI Cape Town

It was a classic T20 encounter filled with spills and thrill as the Durban Super Giants prevailed in a nail-biting thriller in Durban to snap their four-match losing streak. The MI Cape Town nearly pulled the rabbit out of the hat despite being on the receiving end for much of the game.

It was the Quinton de Kock show in the second innings as the wicketkeeper-batter slew the MI Cape Town bowlers to ensure a healthy run rate for his side despite losing Ben McDermott cheaply. The explosive opener was looking to finish the game early after registering a quick-fire half-century.

However, the visitors were handed momentary respite after de Kock departed for 63 off 41 deliveries. Before Rashid Khan’s side could even think of making a comeback in the contest, Keemo Paul blew them away with a scintillating cameo, scoring 31 off just 18 deliveries to bring his side to the cusp of victory.

But the visitors were handed a lifeline after Kagiso Rabada struck twice in one over to take the game down to the wire. Rabada bowled a superb penultimate over to send the match into the last over, but the young Matthew Breetzke held his nerve against Duan Jansen to see his side home in a last over thriller.

MI Cape Town finish on a high after Odean Smith and Delano Potgieter’s assault

Earlier in the match, Quinton de Kock won the toss and elected to field first on a seemingly flat track at the Kingsmead in Durban. It was a brave call given the MI Cape Town’s batting prowess at the top of the order. However, the South African ace’s decision proved to be masterstroke after his bowlers sent both the openers packing inside the first six overs of the match.

George Linde also departed cheaply to further compound the misery for the visitors. That is when an in-form Rassie van der Dussen took center stage for Cape Town, the Proteas star steadied the ship along with the explosive Tim David with a brisk stand for the fourth wicket. Just when it looked like both batters will up the ante for their side, the home side dismissed the set batters in successive overs.

Rashid Khan’s side were staring at a mediocre total on the board before Odean Smith and Delano Potgieter launched a scathing assault against the home side. The duo added 50 runs off just 26 deliveries to propel the visitors to a competitive score of 165 runs in their 20 overs.

SA20 – WATCH: Tristan Stubbs sends the ball into orbit in Sunrisers Eastern Cape vs Durban Super Giants clash

Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) faced Durban Super Giants (DSG) in match no. 19 of SA20 at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on Sunday (January 22).

Asked to bat first, SEC put up a mammoth total of 210 for the loss of just two wickets with the help of Adam Rossington‘s storming 72 runs off 30 deliveries. Jordan Hermann (59) and Aiden Markram (44) also contributed to the team’s total. Meanwhile, Dwaine Pretorius was the only bowler for DSG to pick up a wicket.

After Rossington’s explosive outing, Tristan Stubbs came in to bat at no. 4 and scored a quickfire 27 off 13 deliveries. On the second ball of the 19th over, Stubbs smashed a massive six off Wiaan Mulder, and the ball went up so high in the air that even spider cam failed to keep track of it after a certain point of time.

Wiaan bowled an off-side in slot delivery to Stubbs, which the 22-year-old batter read well and smacked with a lightning bat flow over the long-on fence for a six. The crowd was astonished to see the biggie by Stubbs, and one of the commentators was heard saying, “Tristian Stubbs sends this one into orbit!”

    Here’s the video:

In reply to SEC’s huge total, DSG failed to chase the set target and got bundled out for just 86 runs in 14.4 overs. Kyle Mayers (11), Mulder (29) and Keshav Maharaj (12) were the only players to make it to the double-digits for DSG.

Roelof van der Merwe scalped six wickets for SEC and gave away just 20 runs in his quota of four overs to guide his team to a massive 124-run victory. He was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’ for his sensational bowling performance.

With the win, SEC maintained their second spot in the points table while DSG slipped further down to the last position.

The Sunrisers Eastern Cape continued their winning run in the ongoing SA20 2023 with a five-wicket victory over the Paarl Royals at the Boland Park on Paarl on Thursday, January 19 and are only going from strength to strength as the tournament progresses.

Meanwhile, the Sunrisers franchise owner Kaviya Maran was also in the news not for watching her team’s performance from the stands, but her name was taken by a spectator on a placard with a marriage proposal.

After the completion of the eighth over of the Paarl Royals innings, the cameras focused on a fan who was watching the match sitting on the grass area holding a placard in his that read, “KAVYA MARAN, WILL YOU MARRY ME?” with a heart emoji. The fan’s marriage proposal was posted by SA20 on their official social media handles in no time.

Kaviya Maran is the daughter of one of the media moguls Kalanithi Maran, who is the founder of the Sun Network. Apart from the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Kaviya also co-owns Sunrisers Hyderabad and is reportedly involved with SUN music as well as the all the FM channels of the Sun TV Network.

Maran has been actively participating at the annual Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions where she can be seen discussing the strategies and engaged in intense bidding war for onboarding players along with some of the top officials of the SRH management. She also attends the Orange Army’s matches and in the last couple of years, her reactions to her team’s on-field performances during matchdays have been doing rounds on social media.

Prior to their impressive victory over the Paarl Royals, the Sunrisers Eastern Cape had done the double over the MI Cape Town in their previous two fixtures. They sit comfortably at the second position in the points table behind Pretoria Capitals having won three of their five matches with 12 points to their tally.

The Sunrisers would be enthusiastic on continuing their winning streak when they face Joburg Super Kings on Saturday, January 21.

SA20 2023, MI Cape Town vs Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Match 9 – Talking Points and Who Said What?

Get every cricket updates! Follow us on

The Sunrisers Eastern Cape got the better of MI Cape Town by four wickets in the ninth match of the SA20 2023 at Gquberha on Monday, January 16. By the virtue of this win, they have succeeded in adding the first points to their tally having lost their opening two games.

Meanwhile, the Sunrisers also succeeded in ending the Cape Town-based franchise’s winning momentum in this tournament. MI Cape Town looked strong on paper heading into this contest with wins over the Paarl Royals and the Joberg Super Kings. However, they ran out of fire and brimstone in the just-concluded fixture. Their batting failed to deliver yet again just like their forgettable performances against the Durban Super Giants.

MI Cape Town who had shown a great batting display in the last two matches looked ordinary in this game as they were restricted to a manageable total of 158/8. Even though the Sunrisers were given a run for their money, they still succeeded in getting the job done in the final over.

Talking Points from CT vs EAC,SA20 Match 9:

Skipper Aiden Markram stars with all-round performances:

While skipper Aiden Markram led the Sunrisers Eastern Cape exceptionally well from the front, he also showcased outstanding all-round performances with both the bat and the ball. He picked up the key wickets of Dewald Brevis and Sam Curran to finish with figures of 2/8. The South African sensation then made it count with the bat scoring a match-winning 35-ball 50 to bag a well-deserved Player of the Match award.

George Linde’s valiant half-century helps MI Cape Town post a respectable total

With the MI Cape Town losing wickets from one end, George Linde counter-attacked from the other end and scored a quickfire unbeaten 23-ball 63. His terrific half-century was the only icing on the cake for MI Cape Town in what was otherwise a forgettable collective batting performance. Linde’s valiant knock helped his side post a respectable total of 158/8 on the board.

    Losing captain, Rashid Khan said:

It was a close game, we were 15-20 short. But we fought well and overall it was a good performance especially the way we fought back with the ball. Still a few things to think about and next game we will comeback strong. Focus on what’s coming next and everyone knows their role in the side and next game we have a home game and we will give our hundred percent.

Winning captain and POTM Aiden Markram said:

It’s a big relief. Made a little tough for ourselves in the end. Wanted to be there at the end and get the job done, lot to learn and take away from this game personally. Credit to Stubbs for getting us towards the finish line. I was a bit nervous in the end, but certainly pleased. The margin for error is quite small in this tournament and I thought 160 was a par score. More of the same and focus on areas we can improve on.
