Liverpool given huge Mohamed Salah boost as new Saudi Pro League stance emerges

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah is not in active talks over a move to Saudi Arabia, talkSPORT understands.

The 32-year-old is currently set to become a free agent this summer when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Salah is known to be a key target for Saudi Pro League chiefs, where he would be the latest high-profile player to make the move to the Middle East.

A whopping £150million offer from Al Ittihad in 2023 was swiftly rejected by the Reds for the Egypt international, with fans fearing interest could be renewed ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

The ex-Chelsea forward has done little to shut down speculation – insisting he is ‘more out than in’ when discussing his future in November.

But in a boost for Liverpool, it is understood that as it stands, he is not in negotiations with any Saudi club.

Club chiefs meanwhile are hopeful that the player – as well as skipper Virgil van Dijk – will commit to their futures in Merseyside beyond the summer.

And it appears that Saudi Pro League bosses are losing hope of securing Salah’s services as they believe he wants to continue in Europe.

That is despite being willing to hand the former Basel man a three-year deal worth in excess of £160m-per-year.

It would make Salah one of the richest footballers in the Gulf nation alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, who pockets around £177m-a-year.

Saudi chiefs have been able to speak to Salah regarding a free transfer since January, but the winger has prioritised contract talks with Liverpool.

Salah is enjoying a stunning season so far – where he leads the Premier League’s charts for goals and assists.

With 27 goals and 17 assists already, he is on course for his best ever campaign in the English top-flight.

He is just three assists shy of equalling Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne’s record of 20 in a single season.

And he needs just five more strikes to tie his record tally of 32 he set during his first year at the club following his move from Roma in 2017.

But it’s not all good news for Liverpool despite the positivity surrounding Salah’s future.

That is because academy graduate Trent Alexander-Arnold has agreed to join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer.

The 26-year-old will leave Anfield after agreeing personal terms over a five-year deal worth in excess of £220,000-per-week.

England international Alexander-Arnold has been in discussions with Los Blancos since the New Year.

  • Salah’s future questioned as Slot gives Liverpool team clear tactical message

Salah’s future questioned as Slot gives Liverpool team clear tactical message

Arne Slot’s message to Liverpool was heard loud and clear in training amid rumours of Mohamed Salah’s future at the club.

As the new manager of Liverpool, Slot has had to make his mark on the squad in pre-season as he looks to fill Jurgen Klopp‘s shoes.

And to do so, he has one clear message consisting of four words journalists heard during an open training session in the US: “Kill them with passes.”

It is indicative of his style of play, one that saw Feyenoord win the Eredivisie in 2023, even if it is contrast to the high-energy, counter-attacking play made famous under Klopp.

It is also a system that could limit the impact of a number of key players at the club, most notably Salah, whose future at the club appears uncertain.

Since joining Liverpool, Salah has scored 211 goals in 349 appearances, establishing him as a true Reds’ legend.

The Egypt international has one year left on his contract and has long been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia.

Speaking live on talkSPORT, former Chelsea star Andy Townsend spoke about Salah’s situation at the club and how the change in tactics could affect him.

“I actually thought by now that Salah might have moved on,” he said.

“His numbers have been pretty astonishing, really.

“It is very rare that people come into the Premier League and produce the sort of quality, the form and the big goals when they needed them.

“But nobody can do that forever and, again, perhaps with a more considered approach, is that going to suit Mo?

“Or did it suit Mo when Liverpool were at their foot to the floor best, [Virgil] Van Dijk was picking him out over 60 yards and dropping it over a high defensive line and Mo running in on it and getting his goals.

“It will be fascinating to see.”

It remains to be seen how different Liverpool will look next season under their manager, considering his four-word message which would indicate a different approach to Klopp’s ‘heavy metal football’.

Under the German, the Reds would press the opposition high up the pitch and hold a high line to almost strangle their opponents in their own half.

However, if Slot wants to make Liverpool ‘kill them with passes’ as he put it, there could be widespread changes afoot.

Salah’s situation remains unclear and there is a very real scenario that sees the 32-year-old depart for nothing at the end of next season when his contract expires.

As well as the forward, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk’s contracts also expire in June 2025.

Liverpool confident Mohamed Salah will stay as Saudi Pro League hopes fade

Saudi Pro League chiefs’ hopes of prising Mohamed Salah away from Liverpool are fading, talkSPORT understands.

Liverpool are also confident Salah will extend his stay at Anfield.

We told you how the Reds were bracing themselves for a fresh approach from a Saudi side after rejecting an offer of more than £100million from Al Ittihad last year.

But it is now understood that Saudi chiefs’ hopes of landing the 31-year-old are fading.

The Egypt international has one year left on his contract in Merseyside.

But he appears to be happy to continue his seven-year love affair with the club.

That is despite his recent touchline row with Jurgen Klopp as he prepared to come off the bench in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with West Ham.

Salah then claimed ‘there will be fire’ should he comment on what was said between the pair at the London Stadium.

The former Chelsea forward linked up with Liverpool from Roma in 2017, where he has become one of the world’s best players.

He has scooped every major honour with the club, and has banged in 210 goals from 346 matches in all competitions.

Despite struggling for form of late, Salah has still managed to chip in with a whopping 24 goals and 13 assists from 41 games in all competitions this season.

Should Salah decide to remain at Liverpool, he will be playing under a new manager with Klopp to stand down at the end of the campaign.

Gabby Agbonlahor believes Jurgen Klopp is causing big problems for Liverpool by disrespecting Mo Salah in their heated sideline exchange

And talkSPORT understands that Feyenoord boss Arne Slot is set to replace the German in the dugout.
