Twitter reactions: Gerald Coetzee’s cameo overpowers Varun Chakravarthy’s 5-fer as South Africa pip India in 2nd T20I

In the 2nd T20I of the India tour of South Africa 2024 at St George’s Park, South Africa successfully chased down a modest target set by India, winning the game by 3 wickets in a thriller that extended to the 19th over. After opting to bowl first, South Africa’s disciplined bowling effort kept India to a low total, which the Proteas ultimately surpassed to level the series.

    India’s struggle with the bat

Opting to bowl first, South Africa’s bowlers put India under immense pressure from the outset. Indian skipper Sanju Samson was dismissed for a duck, and India’s top order failed to provide any stability, with both Suryakumar Yadav and Abhishek Sharma managing only 4 runs each. Tilak Varma (20 off 20 balls) and Axar Patel (27 off 21 balls) attempted to stabilize the innings, but their efforts were cut short by South Africa’s tight bowling.

The middle order also found it difficult to break free, with Hardik Pandya playing a cautious knock of 39 runs off 45 deliveries, featuring four boundaries and a six. His efforts, however, were insufficient to set a daunting total, as India wrapped up their innings at 124/6 in 20 overs. For South Africa, Marco Jansen was economical, each picking up a wicket, while Nqabayomzi Peter’s figures of 4 overs, 1/20, stood out as particularly effective.

Varun Chakravarthy shines despite a low total by India

Defending a modest total, India needed early breakthroughs to keep the game in contention. Varun Chakravarthy led the Indian bowling attack brilliantly, claiming 5 wickets for just 17 runs in his 4 overs. His stunning performance included the key wickets of Tristan Stubbs and Andile Simelane, which left South Africa struggling in the middle overs.

Despite Chakravarthy’s heroics, South Africa managed to recover thanks to contributions from Reeza Hendricks (24 off 21) and a well-paced 47 off 41 balls from Tristan Stubbs. Gerald Coetzee‘s quick-fire 19 off 9 deliveries towards the end helped South Africa edge closer to the target, even as wickets continued to tumble at the other end.

    South Africa’s last-minute triumph

In a tense finish, South Africa reached 128/7 in 19 overs, securing a 3-wicket victory. While India’s bowlers kept the contest alive till the end, they couldn’t stop Coetzee and the tail from clinching the game. Chakravarthy’s 5-wicket haul went in vain, as the South African lower order held its nerve to bring the hosts across the line.

Twitter reactions: Sanju Samson smashes multiple records with his explosive century | SA vs IND, 1st T20I

In a scintillating display of power-hitting, Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson made history during the first T20I against South Africa in Durban on Friday (November 8). Samson achieved an extraordinary feat, scoring 107 runs off just 50 balls, smashing 10 sixes and 7 fours. He brought up his half-century in just 27 balls and completed his next 50 runs in a mere 20 balls, showing incredible aggression and timing. His sensational knock set the stage for India to post a formidable total of 202/8. Samson’s departure came when he tried to launch a second six off Nqabayomzi Peter, only to be caught by Tristan Stubbs in the deep.

India’s strong foundation with Sanju Samson’s brilliance

Samson’s blistering century was the highlight of India’s innings, but he was ably supported by Tilak Varma (33) and captain Suryakumar Yadav (21), who provided crucial contributions in the middle order. Despite Samson’s departure, India’s powerful start ensured they were in a strong position heading into the latter stages of their innings. Aiden Markram, who won the toss and chose to bowl first, handed a debut to young all-rounder Andile Simelane. However, despite the debutant’s energy, India’s attack proved overwhelming.

Gerald Coetzee shines for South Africa with three wickets

For South Africa, pacer Gerald Coetzee was the standout bowler, claiming three wickets for 37 runs. His disciplined bowling, combined with smart field placements, helped the Proteas peg India back in the later stages of the innings. While Samson’s fireworks had set a daunting target, Coetzee’s efforts at the death ensured that India could not completely run away with the game. Nevertheless, the foundation laid by Samson and the middle order provided India with enough momentum to challenge South Africa’s batting in the chase.

Samson breaks records with his masterful century

Samson’s 107-run knock set multiple records, including the highest individual score by an Indian batter in Men’s T20Is against South Africa, surpassing Rohit Sharma‘s previous record of 106 runs set in 2015. Additionally, his knock stands as the highest score by an Indian batter on South African soil in Men’s T20Is, a record that was held by Suryakumar after his 100 runs in December 2023. Samson’s 107 also becomes the fourth-highest score by any batter in Men’s T20Is against South Africa, trailing behind Babar Azam (122), Johnson Charles (118) and Chris Gayle (117).

Samson achieved yet another significant milestone, becoming the joint seventh-fastest Indian to reach 7000 runs in T20s. With his 7000th run coming in his 269th innings, he joined Robin Uthappa in this exclusive club. This achievement further showcases his consistency and longevity in the T20 format, with Samson continuing to build on his impressive career statistics. As one of the fastest Indian batters to reach this landmark, his ability to deliver in the shortest format of the game makes him an integral part of India’s T20 squad.

Samson’s exceptional knock in the first T20I against South Africa has not only propelled India to a commanding total but has also established him as one of the leading T20I batters in world cricket. His record-breaking performances are a testament to his skill, consistency, and ability to rise to the occasion in big matches.

South Africa coach provides update on Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi’s availability for the 1st Test against India

In anticipation of the upcoming Test series against India, South Africa‘s coach, Shukri Conrad, has provided a crucial update on the availability of key pacers Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi. Following the setback of losing the One Day International (ODI) series to a Rohit Sharma-less Team India, the Proteas are keen on making a strong comeback in the Test format. The two Tests are scheduled to take place in Centurion from December 26-30 and in Cape Town from January 3-7, 2024.

South Africa Coach’s take on Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi’s fitness

Rabada has been contending with a recent heel injury, while Ngidi has been recovering from an ankle issue. However, Coach Conard expressed optimism about both pacers, affirming that they remain integral parts of the squad and are available for selection in the Boxing Day Test match on December 26.

“They are both here with us and that means they are available for selection as things stand. We have not called anybody in as a replacement and hopefully come the morning of the match we have 15 fit players to select from,” Conrad was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

    Young sensation Gerald Coetzee

Conard has also shed light on the promising 23-year-old fast bowler, Gerald Coetzee, who showcased his skills during the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in India. Describing Coetzee as a relatively new entrant in Test cricket, Conard emphasized his phenomenal performance every time he takes the field, irrespective of the format.

“He’s still a baby in Test cricket. He’s been phenomenal every time he’s stepped onto the field, whether it be with the white ball in his hand or the red one. This is just going to be another step. He brings aggression, he brings something that we’ve always prided ourselves on as South Africans, which is pace. He brings all of those elements and hopefully through the experience he builds in the (T20) league’s and playing for South Africa with the white and red ball, in a couple of years’ time he can be leading our bowling attack,”  the 56-year-old concluded.

Sunil Gavaskar handpicks India’s playing XI for the ‘boxing day’ Test against South Africa in Centurion

As the much-anticipated two-match Test series between South Africa and India is scheduled to commence on Tuesday (December 26) in Centurion, the return of key Indian players adds vigor to the lineup after their hiatus following the ODI World Cup 2023 Final loss against Australia. Offering his strategic insights for the Boxing Day Test, legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar, speaking on Star Sports, has put forth his envisioned playing XI.

Sunil Gavaskar’s ideal Indian Playing XI: Batting department

According to Gavaskar, the opening duo will comprise Rohit Sharma and the promising Yashasvi Jaiswal, injecting a blend of experience and youthful exuberance. In a tactical move, Gavaskar advocated for Shubman Gill to retain the number three position, a role he recently played in the recent West Indies Test series, with Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer anchoring the middle order at 4, 5 and 6, respectively.

“My Playing XI is going to be very simple. The openers will be a [Yashasvi] Jaiswal and captain Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill number three, number four [Virat] Kohli. Number five KL Rahul, number six Shreyas Iyer, or five and six that can move here and there,” Gavaskar said.

Bowling Attack: Two spinners and three pacers

Irrespective of the conditions at Centurion, Gavaskar underscored the importance of playing two spinners and recommends the seasoned pair of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin to fulfill this crucial role.

Addressing the pace attack, the Mumbai-born cricketer suggested the inclusion of Bengal seamer Mukesh Kumar, partnering with the experienced Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, especially in the absence of Mohammed Shami, who remains sidelined due to fitness concerns stemming from an ankle injury sustained during the CWC 2023.

“After that, it will be Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin. And then the three fast bowlers, Mukesh Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj,” the 74-year-old concluded.

Mr. Ruturaj Gaikwad suffered an injury to his right ring finger while fielding in the second ODI against South Africa in Gqeberha. He underwent scans, and following an expert consultation, the BCCI Medical Team has ruled him out of the remainder of the tour. He will be reporting to the NCA for further management of his injury. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Abhimanyu Easwaran as his replacement.

Fast bowler Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the four-day match against South Africa A starting on 26th December at Willowmoore Park in Benoni owing to a hamstring injury. The Selection Committee has added Mr. Rajat Patidar, Mr Sarfaraz Khan, Mr Avesh Khan, and Mr Rinku Singh to India A’s squad while Mr Kuldeep Yadav has been released from the squad.

India, after winning the ODI series in South Africa, would be eager to mark dominance in the two-match Test series as well. The T20I and the ODI squad of India saw relatively younger names while most of the senior players will return for the red-ball assignment.

Notably, Rohit Sharma will lead the side in two Tests after Suryakumar Yadav handled the T20I responsibility while KL Rahul led the ODI squad of India. Before winning the ODI series, the T20I series between the two nations ended in a draw after the first match got washed off in Durban.

In a high-stakes ODI series decider between South Africa and India at Boland Park in Paarl on Thursday (December 21), Sai Sudharsan stole the limelight with a jaw-dropping catch that marked the end of Heinrich Klaasen‘s innings.

Sai Sudharsan’s super acrobatic catch: Turning the tide in India’s favour

The critical moment unfolded in the second ball of the 33rd over during South Africa’s run chase. Avesh Khan delivered a full ball just outside off, extracting extra bounce that caught Klaasen off guard, resulting in a pop-up off the bat. Sudharsan’s lightning-fast reflexes came into play as he sprinted forward and executed a superb dive, managing to get his fingertips under the dipping ball. The third umpire’s confirmation that the fingers were indeed underneath the ball solidified Sudharsan’s super acrobatic catch.

This catch played a crucial role in KL Rahul‘s men securing a 2-1 series win at Proteas’ home, defeating the Aiden Markram-led outfit by a margin of 78 runs. Staring down the defeat at one point, the bowlers made a stunning comeback to bowl the hosts out for 218 in their chase of 297.
