Dyche gives brutally honest Everton verdict and recalls ‘very open’ Moyes chat

Sean Dyche has revealed the extent of the challenges he overcame at Everton before leaving the club ‘in good shape’.

He also recalled his honest conversation with successor David Moyes before his return to the Toffees at the beginning of the year.

Dyche became the Everton manager in January 2023 and was crucial to ensuring their Premier League survival across two seasons.

A poor run of form at the beginning of 2025 led to his dismissal and the return of Moyes in the Goodison Park dugout.

However, Dyche believes that his Everton tenure was a success as he insisted a lot needed changing on and off the pitch at the club.

Speaking exclusively on talkSPORT, he said: “I was really positive about it when I left and I still am. People only see what they see and that’s fine. Fans don’t understand the amount that we had to do behind the scenes, not just me by the way.

    MORE ON THE PREMIER LEAGUE

“There was a lot that needed doing. Another thing I need to be clear about, because when you talk about the club when you took over people presuppose its managers and all that.

“I’m not questioning managers. Everyone has their own style. Everyone has their own way of doing things, but there was a lot that needed correcting. I’m not talking about just on the pitch.

“All sorts of it needed correcting. I went in there with an idea of thinking it was this. And it wasn’t. It was miles away from where I was. It was in a lot worse shape. I don’t want people to misconstrue it.

“I don’t mean on the pitch. Frank [Lampard] was previous to me trying to do everything he could to get that team to win. But there was a lot of things away from the pitch.

“Externally, people can measure it differently and I’ve always been a bit Marmite anyway. But there’s probably that split of Evertonians who go, ‘Yeah, but look at the job he did in the bigger picture’.

“If they knew the depth of what we did not just me, the players included, and all the challenges we went through I’d be surprised if there’s many who went we didn’t do at least a half decent job. I think we did a very good job. So I’m very proud of it.”

Moyes succeeded Dyche nearly 12 years after he left for Manchester United and has so far enjoyed a successful return.

The Scotsman has steered Everton 17 points clear of the relegation zone with nine games left to play.

Dyche insists he left the club in a good position and despite the challenges, he told Moyes that there’s ‘a lot of good’ at Goodison.

“I left it in good hands. I’ve left it in good shape. I said that and I got batted for that as well. I said it was in good shape. Moysey has taken over and he knows it and he gave me a shout out about it.

“I said to him they’re in good shape. They’re fit, but the weight of a club sometimes gets too much. I think for the players it got too much. You know I was okay with it. I learnt about the size of the club and the feel and the weight of it, I was alright.

“But you could see it in the players, and it was time for me to go and have a chat with Kev Thelwell [director of football] and go, ‘Listen, this is what I’m seeing, this is what I’m thinking’.

“I’m putting it out there for the club because I insisted that it was in a better shape when I left than when we got there, we’d come through the challenges.

“And I knew deep down, they just needed a new… Football’s a weird business, sometimes you just need a new voice. You know, small details can change, a new manager going in. And Moysey, who I admire a lot, I think he’s a fantastic manager and a good bloke as well.

“Spoke to him as well, by the way, very open about that. I told him there’s a lot of good there, and I’m delighted for him, I’m delighted they’re going well.”

Dyche also responded to those who believe that he’d be disappointed with Everton’s progress since he’s left by dismissing any sense of resentment.

“You know what I can’t get my head around, people go, ‘Oh, you must be disappointed they’re doing well’.

“What? After two years of grafting out, why would I want them to struggle, why would I want failure? We fought to keep it right, I wouldn’t want it to do anything else than be successful.

Sean Dyche finally speaks out about viral ‘Utter Woke Nonsense’ meme

“There’s not a single bone in my body of any resentment, any anger, nothing like being gutted they’re doing well. I wish them well.”

Dyche’s X-rated response to question on Klopp fight has Richards in stitches

Micah Richards burst into laughter over Sean Dyche’s emphatic response to his question about a hypothetical fight with Jurgen Klopp.

Former Burnley boss Dyche was involved in a feisty exchange with the legendary Liverpool manager at Anfield in 2021.

When walking down the tunnel at half-time in Burnley’s eventual 1-0 Premier League win, he appeared to say something towards Klopp.

Dyche’s managerial counterpart looked back in shock and fired back by seemingly shouting and furiously waving his hand.

The pair continued their verbal exchange before separating in what is one of the Premier League’s most entertaining touchline moments.

Appearing on A League of Their Own, Dyche watched it back and was asked about what was said by host Romesh Ranganathan between him and Klopp.

Dyche jokingly responded: “I just said, ‘Do you mind not using such bad language in front of these young players?”

Dyche later added: “I’m not going to tell you what I really said, am I?”

Panellist and former Manchester City star Richards was on the same team as Dyche and was curious about his chances in a fight against Klopp.

“You think you could have him though?” he asked, with the manager then confidently replying: “F****** obvs [obviously].”

Richards was left in stitches, with Dyche clearly optimistic despite the clear height difference between him and Klopp.

Both managers played down the spat afterwards, although it was clear to see that tensions were high during it.

“You know when we come to these places, you know we are allowed to actually fight,” Dyche said.

“We are allowed to actually try and win, that’s all it was.”

“I said absolutely nothing that should be out the norm,” he added.

“It’s just two managers fighting for their teams, wanting to win a game. There’s nothing wrong with that.”

Klopp then said: “If he’s not talking about it, I will not talk about it. I didn’t start it, but it’s nothing, all good.”

Dyche left Burnley over a year later and returned to management with Everton at the beginning of 2023.

Ange under fire after disastrous PL loss — but Tottenham fans are raging at another Spurs target

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou said it is his responsibility to turn around a miserable Premier League season after a 3-2 defeat to Everton on Sunday (Monday AEDT), which helped the Toffees pull clear of the relegation zone.

Previously goal-shy Everton tore through Spurs’ under-strength backline to net three times before the break through Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Iliman Ndiaye and an Archie Gray own goal.

A first win in seven league games takes David Moyes’ men four points clear of the bottom three.

Tottenham’s 12th Premier League defeat of the season leaves them just four points above Everton in 15th and ramps up the pressure on manager Postecoglou.

However, it was chairman Daniel Levy, not the Australian, who felt the fury of the travelling support as they chanted for change at the top of the club.

“This is not about me, but what is about me is I have a responsibility to the players I do have. For me to focus on anything else is abstaining from the responsibility I do have,” said Postecoglou, who was without 10 first-team regulars due to injury.

Everton did bite the bullet to sack Sean Dyche earlier this month and it was like the Goodison days of old for Moyes as he enjoyed a first win of his second spell in charge.

“Really pleased we could give everyone something to shout about,” said Moyes. “We played ever so well in the first half, scored three and could have scored more.”

Moyes’ homecoming fell flat in a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa in midweek, after which the former Manchester United boss said he was aware of the task he faces to preserve Premier League status due to a lack of firepower.

Calvert-Lewin had not scored since September but did not look like a striker short on confidence as he turned Gray and Lucas Bergvall before firing in the opening goal on 13 minutes.

To compound the absence of first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and three of Postecoglou’s preferred back four in Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie, Tottenham were also without club record signing Dominic Solanke.

Captain Son Heung-min stepped in to start as a makeshift centre-forward and should have levelled when he shot too close to Jordan Pickford from Dejan Kulusevski’s cross.

But Tottenham looked likely to concede every time Everton sprang out on the counter-attack.

Calvert-Lewin should have had a second but for a heavy touch that allowed Antonin Kinsky to block before the Czech goalkeeper turned Orel Mangala’s effort onto the post.

Everton had scored just 15 goals in 20 league games prior to kick-off, going goalless in nine of their last 11.

What little inspiration there has been from the Toffees this season has come from Ndiaye.

The Senegal international produced a moment of magic to double the lead as he skipped past the statuesque Radu Dragusin before slotting high past Kinsky.

Gray’s own goal compounded a terrible first 45 minutes for the visitors as their frailty from set-pieces was again exposed when the 18-year-old could only turn Calvert-Lewin’s flick into his own net.

Kulusevski’s classy chip over three scrambling Everton defenders pulled a goal back before Richarlison turned home at the back post in stoppage time.

Postecoglou’s men remain alive in three cup competitions, but Levy has a decision to make on whether the quest for a first trophy since 2008 would be better served by a change of manager.

“We’re still in all four competitions. Our league position is not great to say the least but eventually our players will come back. Significant talent will come back,” added Postecoglou.

“I’ve got great motivation to get through this so when we do get our players back we can get something significant out of our season.”

Alexander Isak fired Newcastle into the Premier League’s top four on Wednesday, scoring twice in a 3-0 cruise against Wolves as David Moyes endured a miserable return to the Everton dugout.

Red-hot Isak found the net for the eighth league match in a row as the Magpies leapfrogged faltering Chelsea into fourth spot in the table.

The Swedish international put the home side ahead in the 34th minute when his shot took a huge deflection off Wolves defender Rayan Ait-Nouri, leaving Jose Sa wrong-footed.

The striker is just the fourth different player to score in eight successive Premier League appearances, after Jamie Vardy (twice for Leicester), Ruud van Nistelrooy (twice for Manchester United), and Daniel Sturridge (for Liverpool).

‘SO UNNECESSARY’: Controversy as Spurs’ dream turns to nightmare in four-min derby chaos

Isak doubled Newcastle’s lead shortly before the hour mark, controlling Bruno Guimaraes’ pass before firing home for his 15th league goal of the season and Anthony Gordon added a third.

Eddie Howe’s men, who have now won six straight league games, have recovered strongly from a lengthy poor spell to make a powerful case for a Champions League spot next season.

Taking advantage of the faltering form of Manchester City and Chelsea, they are just three points behind third-placed Nottingham Forest.

    – Villa ruin Moyes’ return –

Moyes, in the first game of his second spell in charge of Everton, watched his toothless side lose 1-0 to Aston Villa at Goodison Park.

Ollie Watkins broke the deadlock in the 51st minute, slotting past England teammate Jordan Pickford after he was sent clear by Morgan Rogers.

Everton huffed and puffed but showed a lack of creativity — unsurprising for a team who have scored just 15 league goals in their 20 matches this season.

The result lifts Unai Emery’s Villa to seventh in the table but Everton remain in deep trouble, just one point above the relegation zone in 16th spot.

The Liverpool club’s new owners, the American-based Friedkin Group, sacked Sean Dyche last week and brought back 61-year-old Moyes, who enjoyed success during an 11-year stint at Goodison Park from 2002 to 2013.

But the Toffees, ever-present in the top flight since 1954, have battled relegation for the past three seasons and are once again in deep trouble.

Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester suffered their sixth straight league defeat, losing 2-0 to Crystal Palace to leave the Foxes second from bottom of the table.

Jean-Philippe Mateta put the visitors ahead early in the second half and Marc Guehi made the points safe with a late second.

Arsenal, winless in three matches in all competitions, are hosting injury-hit Tottenham in the late kick-off on Wednesday.

David Moyes sends rallying cry to Everton fans as sensational return confirmed

Everton have confirmed the reappointment of David Moyes following the sacking of Sean Dyche.

The 61-year-old has sealed an emotional return to Goodison Park with a two-year contract – 22 years after his initial move to Merseyside.

Moyes, who departed West Ham at the end of last season, first linked up with the Toffees in 2002 from Preston, staying for 11 years before taking charge at Manchester United.

And he is now back in the hotseat at his former stomping ground – signing a deal until 2027.

Issuing a rallying cry to the Everton faithful, Moyes said: “It’s great to be back! I enjoyed 11 wonderful and successful years at Everton and didn’t hesitate when I was offered the opportunity to rejoin this great club.

“I’m excited to be working with The Friedkin Group and I am looking forward to helping them rebuild the club.

“Now we need Goodison and all Evertonians to play their part in getting behind the players in this important season so we can move into our fabulous new stadium as a Premier League team.”

The Scotsman was immediately identified as The Friedkin Group’s first-choice candidate to succeed Dyche due to his knowledge of the club and experience in the Premier League.

And Moyes has plenty of experience battling relegation, having saved Everton and West Ham twice from the drop into the Championship.

talkSPORT understands Moyes was initially offered a short-term deal until the end of the season – but pushed for a two-year deal to take the club into their new stadium.

In his first spell at Everton, Moyes was brought in during similar circumstances in March 2002 with the club sitting in 16th spot – just as they are today.

The club then enjoyed their most successful period in the Premier League under Moyes – finishing in the top eight nine times out of the next 11 seasons.

Moyes even managed to secure Champions League qualification following a fourth-placed finish in the 2004/05 campaign.

But the club eventually suffered defeat to Villarreal in the third round qualifier.

And Moyes came agonisingly close to winning Everton’s first trophy since 1995, however his side were beaten 2-1 by Chelsea in the 2009 FA Cup final.

However he knows he has his work cut out second time around as he looks to avoid overseeing Everton’s first-ever relegation from the Premier League.

His second debut in charge at the club will be against Aston Villa on Wednesday night.

If results go against them next week, Everton could find themselves in the bottom three with Wolves and Ipswich just a point behind.

Everton fan breaks down in tears reacting to Sean Dyche’s departure in passionate talkSPORT rant

Everton fans will be hoping for an immediate new manager bounce having not seen their side win in the league since a 4-0 win over Wolves on December 4.

Since then, they have picked up just two points from their next five games – losing their last two against Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth.

Executive chairman Marc Watts said: “We are pleased that David is joining us at this pivotal time in Everton’s history.

“With over a decade of experience at the club, he is the right leader to propel us through our final season at Goodison Park and into our new stadium.

“We look forward to working with David to build the foundation of a new era for Everton.”

Everton fan leaves talkSPORT hosts stunned with radical next manager choice

Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent were left stunned when one Everton fan made a left-field suggestion for Sean Dyche’s replacement.

The Toffees made the abrupt decision to sack Dyche just a few hours before their FA Cup third round clash with Peterborough, with the search for his replacement already underway.

While David Moyes is the current frontrunner for the job, fans have been giving their suggestions for who should step into the dugout at Goodison Park.

One fan named Colin called talkSPORT Drive to give his views on Dyche’s sacking, before suggesting the son of a legendary former manager to take the reins.

Speaking to Goldstein and Bent, Colin said: “I’m absolutely buzzing. He [Dyche] had to go, he took the club as far as he could take us.

“Everton needs to stop going backwards, they need to step forwards.

“When you sack a manager you look at Wolves and they’ve gone and got two results back to back, they played against Nottingham Forest and they were half-decent even though they got beaten 3-0.

“Under Dyche I didn’t know where the next result was coming from.

“I think they’ve already got somebody lined up for the job – I personally think it’s Jose Mourinho, but I’m not up for that myself.

“If ever there was person I’d have at the club and I’m going to throw a right name in the hat here, it’s Davide Ancelotti.”

Asked if he meant Carlo Ancelotti, Colin replied: “No Davide, his son.

“His son has been with Carlo for years as his number two, he’s learnt the trade and I’ve watched some of his coaching techniques and I think that he’s one for the future. What a coach.”

Responding to Colin’s suggestion, Bent said: “Okay, so maybe he’s not one for right now. If you were picking one for right now, who would it be?”

To which Colin replied: “Lee Carsley.

“Mr Everton is at the club right now in Seamus Coleman. You heard Frank Lampard talk about Seamus Coleman and the way he spoke in the changing rooms, he’s Mr Everton.

“You just need him in that changing room with Lee Carsley and that’ll get us to the end of the season.”

Clearly surprised, Andy Goldstein said: “Where have you seen his [Davide’s] training methods,” to which Colin said: “On YouTube, you can see Real Madrid’s training techniques and him taking training.”

Bent replied: “Colin, you might be ahead of the curve there,” before Goldstein said: “Blimey, Colin. You’ve done your homework. Good work.”

Colin was right, Davide Ancelotti has worked as Carlo’s no.2 for a number of years including time with Bayern Munich and Napoli.

He followed him to Everton in 2019 and stayed for the entirety of Ancelotti’s reign at Goodison Park before heading with his father to the Bernabeu where he currently works as his assistant for Real Madrid.

Having achieved his pro licence in July 2023, Ancelotti Jr is ready to take that next step into management, however it remains to be seen when, or if, he’ll choose to do so on his own.

David Moyes the favourite for Everton job with Gareth Southgate among contenders

David Moyes is set to hold talks with Everton on Friday over a potential return as their manager, talkSPORT understands.

Sources close to the Scot say he would be willing to accept an initial short-term deal until the end of the season.

Moyes previously spent 11 years in charge of the club between 2002 and 2013.

During that period, Everton qualified for the Champions League and reached the final of the FA Cup.

Their former manager is currently out of work having left West Ham in the summer.

Meanwhile, Dyche was sacked on Thursday, a matter of hours before their FA Cup win against Peterborough United, following a run of one win in 11 matches.

His exit comes with the Toffees 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone.

Owners, The Friedkin Group, took the decision to change manager this week following consultations with club executives.

It was decided that parting ways with Dyche was the best approach despite their respect for him and the job he has done at Everton.

The former Burnley manager had been out of contract at the end of the campaign and indicated in a meeting with the owners he had taken the club as far as he could.

As well as Moyes, Portuguese coach Paulo Fonseca is also interested in the role. Fonseca is also out of work having left AC Milan in December.

Meanwhile, Gareth Southgate has admirers in The Friedkin Group but the ex-England manager is said to have reservations about taking a job mid-season.

Southgate reached back-to-back Euros finals and the semi-finals of the World Cup during six years leading the Three Lions.

However, he stepped down from the position following Euro 2024 last summer.

Jose Mourinho will not be the next Everton boss, though, having been sacked by The Friedkin Group as Roma manager last year.

It’s also understood no approach for Graham Potter was made before he accepted the offer to become West Ham boss.

Club captain Seamus Coleman and under-18’s boss Leighton Baines took charge of the Cup clash with the Toffees running out 2-0 winners thanks to Beto and Iliman Ndiaye.

Darren Bent and Andy Goldstein react to news of Sean Dyche sacked as Everton manager

The duo, as well as the rest of the Everton squad, were only informed of Dyche’s departure before their pre-match meal.

“It’s been a difficult day,” Everton defender Michael Keane said after the win over Peterborough.

“It is never nice to see a manager lose his job, and as players, we have to take a lot of responsibility for that.

“We haven’t been good enough this season when you look at the talent in the team and where we are in the league. It’s not been easy.”

When asked about when he heard about Dyche being sacked, Keane said: “When we came down for our pre-match meal, so it was last minute.

“It was tough because no one knew what was going on, and it’s not what you want to hear before a game, but it is what it is.”

Everton are next in action on Wednesday when Aston Villa visit Goodison Park. It remains to be seen who will take charge of the team for that game.

The Toffees also confirmed that several members of Dyche’s team have also departed.

Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard and Billy Mercer have all left Goodison Park following the decision to part ways with Dyche.

Everton fan breaks down in tears over Sean Dyche exit in talkSPORT rant

Sean Dyche’s sacking left an Everton fan ‘shaking’ as he made an emotional plea to the club’s owners live on talkSPORT.

The Toffees parted ways with Dyche on Thursday after almost two years in charge at Goodison Park.

His exit comes after a run of one win in 11 matches, which saw his side score just five goals.

The timing of the announcement was bizarre as it came a matter of hours before their FA Cup third round clash with Peterborough on Thursday night.

Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines will now take charge of the team for the Goodison Park clash.

Dyche leaves Everton with the club one point above the Premier League relegation zone in 16th.

New owners, The Friedkin Group, will oversee a move to their new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock this summer.

Everton fan Steve is amongst those supporters concerned by the timing of Dyche’s exit, though, during an uncertain period for the club.

He told talkSPORT’s Andy Goldstein on Drive: “I’m shaking. I’m absolutely shaking.

“I’m a regular caller to your programme, and I’ve been saying for a long time, Andy, why couldn’t we just agree with all the stick he’s been getting? I agree with that.

“But again, it’s the timing. These Friedkins, right? We’re going in the right direction. The new stadium’s around the corner.

“Dyche came in when we had the sinking ship, and all that man’s done is his best. It’s not great on the eye, but we knew we had a three to four years when he came in of how it was going to be.

“What with the points deduction, he’s been getting rid of our better players. Every season, your Alex Iwobi’s, your Richarlison’s.

“He hasn’t been able to sign any decent players. In my view, he’s a very, very good manager.

“These Friedkins, right? Whoever they’ve got in mind, there’s only one person that’s going to… I’ve had to get my head around this in five seconds. I’m shaking, Andy. I am shaking.

“I’m 62 years of age. I live and die for Everton Football Club. I’ve had it with the Evertonians in the stands week in, week out. I’m talking to them saying, ‘Yes, Dyche, he does have to go, but it’s all about the timing’.

“If this is them, Andy, making this decision now, they’ve only got to go and get one person that will hopefully get us over the line, and that’s David Moyes. If they bring anyone else in, we’re gone.”

Former boss David Moyes is interested in a return to Goodison Park, talkSPORT understands, having left West Ham in the summer.

An emotional Steve continued: “I’ve asked this a million times for three years.

Darren Bent and Andy Goldstein react to news of Sean Dyche sacked as Everton manager

“That man was going to carry us to Bramley Moore Dock, with a very, very poor squad of players, right?

“Pep Guardiola coming in tomorrow is not going to guarantee us that we’re going to stay up. You’re looking at Sean Dyche as that man.

“He’s never made excuses. I begged for him and tried to get Frank Lampard out to get him into our club because he plays off a straight bat.

“That man will look at you square in the eye and he’ll hang you on the peg rightly or wrongly.

“That’s the manager we need at this moment in time with the squad and what we can do with all the red tape that’s happening with our club.

“We get the ground, we’re going in the right direction. We get the owners. We think they’re 100 per cent behind Everton, and you understand football, we’re going in the right direction.

“Sean Dyche on the park, not being able to buy players, awful on the eye. Just get us over the line. Sean, get us to Bramley Moore Dock, please. You can do it. Who’s going to get us to Bramley Moore Dock?

Everton are precariously close to the relegation zone

“There’s thousands of Evertonians that come on your show and go on social media, ‘it’s awful on the eye, it’s this and it’s that’.

“We wanted to be the best of a bad bunch, Andy. That’s all we wanted to be.

“I am shaken and I am sick and I am worried sick that our club, our club now, and all these Evertonians and ex-pundits and ex-players of Everton Football Club think what Dyche was doing wasn’t good enough.

“We’ve got a very, very, very poor team. And I tell you what, you’ve got to be careful what you wish for.

“You be careful what you wish for, because if there is a man out there better than Sean Dyche, I want to see him, Andy. I want to see him, that carries us to Bramley Moor Dock and see what you’re like when we’re in the championship.

“All you Dyche haters, you see what we’re like. That man knew our club. He knew every nook and cranny. He knew what he was up against day in, day out.

“He knew them players. He knew what they were doing day in, day out. What’s the next manager going to do? How long is it going to take him to get them where we’re going to be at, Andy?

“It’s a worry. It’s the biggest decision made in the history of Everton Football Club, what them Friedkins have done. And I hope they’re right.

“And I’ll tell you now, I’ll stick my neck out. I think they’ve got it wrong, Andy. I think our club’s bang in big trouble now. Bang in big trouble.

“And if they think by getting rid of Dyche, that’s the answer, I think they’re wrong, Andy. I honestly do.”

Steve’s wish to see Moyes return may be coming true as talkSPORT understands the Scot is a leading contender for the job.

Former AC Milan boss Paulo Fonseca is also keen on the job while there are admirers for Gareth Southgate in the Everton hierarchy but it’s understood the ex-England boss has reservations about taking a job mid-season.

Dyche guided Everton to safety in each of the last two seasons after taking charge in January 2023.

The Toffees remain one of six clubs yet to be relegated from the Premier League alongside Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham.

However, Dyche’s exit comes with the club once again at risk of dropping out of the top flight for the first time since 1954.

Following the cup clash with Peterborough, Everton are next in league action at home to Aston Villa on Wednesday.

At the start of the season, no one would have predicted Nottingham Forest to be guaranteed a place in the Premier League’s top three on New Year’s Day.

The once mighty Forest, who famously won back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980, were in fact one of the favourites to be relegated this season, according to the bookmakers.

After winning two of their last three matches to finish one place above the drop zone last campaign, that prediction made sense.

But now, they are one place off top spot and everyone else has egg on their face.

Forest moved to second with a 2-0 win at Everton in the early hours of Monday morning Australian time, and at worst they will start 2025 in third if Chelsea win at second-last Ipswich Town.

It was their fifth consecutive victory in the league, which is the longest winning streak in English football’s top flight since 1995.

Sitting on 37 points with 11 wins and four draws for 19 matches, they have already surpassed their entire points tally from last season by five.

Forest returned to the Premier League for the first time in 23 years in the 2022/23 season and in their two previous campaigns back among England’s heavyweights, they only won nine games in each season.

“We are enjoying it,” Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo said of their league position. “We are especially enjoying because our fans are enjoying.

“This is what we have to do together, let’s enjoy the journey, compete in every match. Nothing changes, we have to realise we didn’t achieve anything.”

It has been a stunning turnaround, and it has been built off the back of staunch defence.

The 26 goals they have scored so far is the equal least, alongside Aston Villa, among the top 12 teams, but they have still presented a serious attacking threat.

New Zealander Chris Wood has been the hero up front with 11 goals after earlier in the year knocking back the pursuits of the A-League’s newest team, Auckland FC.

The tall striker is a major threat in the air and is a proven finisher with a double figure goal tally in six different Premier League seasons across his stints at Forest and Burnley.

The 33-year-old is on track to better his best season tally of 14, which he has reached twice, and sits equal fourth in the golden boot standings, six shy of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

Everton boss, and Wood’s former mentor at Burnley, Sean Dyche was full of praise for Wood after he scored at Goodison Park.

“He’s got a different format they’re working to there which seems to be to his liking. He’s got wide players, they’ve got a strength behind them, and they get the ball up to him quickly,” Dyche said.

“That seems to be a thing that’s good for him and not massively dissimilar to what we were trying to achieve at Burnley.

“But yeah, I think a lot of credit to him, credit to his professionalism to keep on top of himself. He had a quiet spell when he first went there and [there were] a few question marks over him.

“That can happen with strikers. He’s had that before, and he’s come through it. Certainly a very good player, and someone I’ve got a lot of respect for.”

But it is at the other end of the pitch where Forest are causing the most headaches for their opponents.

Goalkeeper Matz Sels boasts the most clean sheets in the league with eight, and has made many crucial stops throughout the first half of the season.

In front of Sels is real the star of the show, however.

Centre back Nikola Milenkovic was bought from Fiorentina for £12 million in the summer and is proving to be bargain in comparison to what the richer clubs fork out for the linchpins of their defences.

In fact, the 27-year-old is widely regarded as the best signing of the season.

“The Serbian defender has helped turn Nottingham Forest into one of the best defensive sides in the Premier League under Nuno Espirito Santo’s guidance, with an old-school appetite for the battle with his centre-forward,” The UK Telegraph’s sports writer Lawrence Ostlere wrote.

“He’s also added a set-piece threat at the other end of the pitch, with a couple of goals and an assist already this season, and must have added plenty of value to his £12m transfer fee.”

Milenkovic’s impact has been so great, that it has even forgiven other missteps Forest have made in transfer windows past.

“Nottingham Forest were mocked, sometimes rightly, for signing vast numbers of players in recent years; so many that they didn’t have room in the squad for some of them,” The UK Telegraph’s senior football correspondent Richard Jolly wrote.

“Yet recruitment has clearly been refined: less quantity, more quality. Their side now has a series of fine buys. Nikola Milenkovic may be the best: not merely in what he is – a giant, dominant central defender – but in terms of what Forest lacks.

“He complements the excellent Murillo wonderfully. Forest now have one of the best central-defensive partnerships and defences in the division. And at £12m, Milenkovic is a bargain.”

In midfield, captain Morgan Gibbs-White has been inspirational.

He followed manager Nuno from Wolves to the City Ground, and has since become an England international.

Gibbs-White scored in their most recent outing at Everton, but it his creativity in the middle of the pitch that has drawn the most praise.

At Goodison Park, he also set up Wood’s goal and has been dubbed by his manager a “talented player” who is “fantastic”.

He along with Wood and Milenkovic will need to maintain their high standards if Forest are to challenge for the title or hang on to a Champions League place.

Chants of ‘we’re going to win the league’ have rung out from the Forest fans regularly in recent months, but with every win they are becoming less tongue-in-cheek.

It would take a mighty collapse from league leaders Liverpool, who are eight points clear with a game in hand, but the fact Forest and the Reds are battling it out at the pointy end of the table is a providing older fans with a lot of nostalgia.

Forest won the English First Division in 1978 with Liverpool finishing second, the following year their places were reversed.

During the 1980s, Forest finished third on three occasions and they last played in the European Cup, now the Champions League, in the 1980-81 season.

Now, the dream is real of hearing the Champions League theme on a Tuesday or Wednesday night at the City Ground.

It will be a challenge, but their biggest tests might be behind them.

Arsenal keep pressure on Liverpool | 01:27

In the second half of the season, their clashes with fellow top five teams Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City are all at home.

That Liverpool match is only two weeks away, first they will travel to an in form Wolves in a grudge match for Nuno, and after that clash we will have a better understanding how serious about being a top team Forest truly are.

Their current standing proves this is more than merely a good start, but it remains unclear whether this could be another Leicester City fairytale title, an Aston Villa of last season charge to the Champions League, or a campaign that fades into the middle of the table.

Everton are surprise leaders in Europe in astonishing feat

Everton have become surprise leaders in one statistic across Europe thanks to their draw at home to Chelsea.

The Toffees drew 0-0 with the Blues at a wet and blustery Goodison Park on Sunday to extend their unbeaten run to three matches.

Robert Sanchez had a strong performance in the Chelsea net to deny Everton, with one close-range save against Jack Harrison a highlight.

However, Jordan Pickford also did his bit for the hosts to ensure they didn’t concede in the difficult conditions.

Everton’s clean sheet is their seventh in the Premier League since the beginning of October.

This is the most out of any club in Europe’s top five leagues, including LaLiga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1.

    MORE ON THE PREMIER LEAGUE

Furthermore, it’s Everton’s fifth clean sheet from their last six league fixtures, with a 4-0 defeat at Manchester United the only outlier.

Afterwards, Toffees boss Sean Dyche dismissed the sentiment that his side played an ‘old school’ style of football to earn their draw.

“There’s no old school there, that’s new school defending like that,” he said to talkSPORT.

“Breaking passing lanes, breaking attacks, you can’t do it now from old ways, you’ve got to do it with the modern tactical side and defending in our shape, working and being diligent to our shape.

“I was very pleased with that again after a good performance at Arsenal from that side of things, and today we’ve opened up a little bit more and we’ve found chances.

“It would have been a tough one on them I think if we’d nicked it but we could’ve nicked, that can happen, and equally it would have been probably tough on us if they would have nicked it. So I think in the end, a point is about right for both teams today.”

Dyche added: “We’ve formed a way of working, at times it’s worked for us. Early season, we were out of them habits, we had to remind the players of them good habits and now we’ve lost two in 12.

“A lot of draws but clean sheets as well, seven in ten, I mean, these are good markers, they’re good signs, not easy to do that in the Premier League.

“So a lot of what I’m looking at, certainly the will and desire and the effort of the players is intact. Now can we take it on again and then find that openness to our play and that cutting edge to our play?

“But against these sides, it’s not easy you know, they defend well as well. It’s not just about them keeping the ball, they defend well as well, so overall I’m pleased with the shift that the players put in again today.”

Everton are four points clear of the relegation zone and have climbed to 15th in the Premier League with their draw against Chelsea.

They also have a game in hand following the postponed Merseyside derby against Liverpool earlier this month.
