406 goals and no trophies … but England captain Harry Kane would trade it all for Euro glory

Harry Kane said leading England to win Euro 2024 on Monday morning AEST would be the “most incredible feeling” a footballer can have as he aims to end his own long wait to win a trophy.

The England captain has scored 406 goals for club and country in a decorated career without winning any collective silverware.

All that could change in Berlin this weekend should Kane guide England to a first major tournament win in 58 years to become European champions for the first time.

“It’s no secret that I haven’t won a team trophy. Every year that goes by, you’re more motivated and you’re more determined to change that,” Kane said at a pre-match press conference on Saturday.

“Tomorrow night I have the opportunity to win one of the biggest trophies you could ever win and to make history with my nation.

“I’d swap everything in my career to have a special night and a win tomorrow evening.”

Kane was on the losing side three years ago as England missed out on the Euros to Italy on penalties at Wembley.

Now into their first ever final on foreign soil, the Bayern Munich striker said England would be fuelled by the pain of defeat at Euro 2020.

“It would be, obviously, the most incredible feeling as a professional footballer you can get and I’m sure also for the fans, to have that moment in history and to be able to celebrate, that would be something very special,” added Kane.

“We’ve been here before and it was a tough finish in the last Euro. So there’s that extra hunger and fire in the belly to make sure this one goes our way.”

The two finalists have arrived in Berlin in contrasting fashion. Spain have looked a class apart in Germany, eliminating the hosts and France, as well as beating Italy and Croatia to become the first side to win all of their first six games at a Euros.

England, on the other hand, have had to battle back in all three of the knockout rounds against Slovakia, Switzerland and the Netherlands without ever delivering on the full potential of a richly-talented squad.

Kane, though, said England’s resilience to win, thanks to late goals and a penalty shootout against the Swiss in the quarter-finals, had fostered greater belief their time has come.

“You have to have a belief you can win it otherwise there’s no point in being in the tournament, but I think that belief has grown as we’ve gone through the tournament,” he added.

“What we’ve been through with the late goals and the penalty shootout and all that stuff builds resilience and builds belief.”

  • Superstar’s 634-game hell that won’t end as football’s most infamous curse laid bare

Superstar’s 634-game hell that won’t end as football’s most infamous curse laid bare

He’s the all-time record goalscorer for England and Tottenham and the second-highest Premier League scorer in history.

Yet for all his goals and individual accolades, and his undeniable status as one of the greatest No.9s of the 21st century, Harry Kane just can’t win a major trophy.

The infamous ‘curse’ – once called the Tottenham curse, for the club he grew up just 15 minutes down the road from and would become a talismanic captain – now appears to have followed him to Germany.

This morning, Kane’s Bayern Munich was dumped out of the Champions League semi-finals in dramatic fashion after a 2-1 second-leg defeat to Real Madrid saw them bow out 4-3 on aggregate.

Madrid had been the better team for most of the match, yet Kane teed up Canadian star Alphonso Davies to score the opener in the 68th minute with a screamer off his weaker foot.

But Munich coach Thomas Tuchel then substituted a host of stars – including Kane – to try and defend the lead.

Instead, it slipped through their fingers, with Kane watching from the bench as Madrid struck twice in the closing stages to book their place in the final at Wembley Stadium against another German team in Borussia Dortmund.

Crazy comeback sees Real Madrid prevail! | 01:39

‘One of the greatest games’: INSANE drama as Madrid reach CL final after all-time late comeback

It was Kane’s 634th game for club and country. But in all that time, he is yet to win a major trophy.

Football fans often talk about a god of football. Perhaps Kane made a deal with football’s devil – to become one of the most celebrated scorers of his era, yet never to win.

Though he now resides in Munich, having made a club-record 100m euro move in the off-season, the endless taunts of opposition fans that have dogged the illustrious striker throughout his career must hit even closer to home.

In 435 appearances for Tottenham, Kane scored 280 times – putting him beyond even the great Jimmy Greaves as Spurs’ all-time top scorer. His record included 213 strikes in the Premier League, second only to Alan Shearer’s 260.

He claimed the Premier League golden boot in three separate seasons, yet the side that Ange Postecoglou now oversees is still chasing a first major trophy since the 2008 league cup.

Only once in the Kane era did they finish in the top-two in the Premier League – back in 2016/17, when Kane scored 29 times including a stunning four hat-tricks. Spurs finished with 86 goals, their most in a league campaign since 1962-63.

Even that wasn’t enough: Chelsea still won by seven points.

Face shove denies Real Madrid goal | 00:44

There have been other near-misses for Kane in his time at Tottenham.

The most painful, perhaps, is the 2018/19 Champions League final, when Spurs lost 2-0 to Liverpool.

There was also a 2015 League Cup final (lost 2-0 to Chelsea), another loss in the same competition in 2021 (1-0 to Manchester City).

Only a couple of months after that defeat, Kane suffered the greatest near-miss of his career: when England lost a penalty shootout to Italy in the final of the (delayed) 2020 Euros – once again on the famed turf of Wembley.

Harry Kane played every single minute for Spurs and England in each of the above finals. He captained the Three Lions in the latter tournament and scored in the shootout, just as he captained them in the 2018 World Cup and won the golden boot as they reached the semi-finals.

Kane was dejected after the loss.Source: Getty Images

After all these heartbreaks, after his long years of service to his hometown team, things were supposed to be different this season.

Bayern had won the German Bundesliga 11 seasons in a row – and won five of the last 11 DFB Pokal (German Cup) tournaments in that time too. They also won the Champions League, the Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup in both 2013 and 2020 – and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League semi-finals four other times in the period between those two titles.

The German team, put simply, were serial winners: juggernauts in the way that Tottenham can only aspire to be these days.

Kane has scored 36 goals (and four hat-tricks) with eight assists already in 32 league games this season, a record season for a newcomer to the Bundesliga that will all-but-assure him of winning another golden boot.

He added eight goals and four assists in 12 Champions League games – a record for an English player in terms of goal involvements in a CL campaign.

And yet Bayern have lost the Bundesliga title, currently sitting 15 points behind Bayern Leverkusen with two games to play. Even second place isn’t assured, with VfB Stuttgart looming just two points behind them.

Bayern were also dumped out of the German Cup – the DFB Pokal – in just the second round by third-tier Saarbrücken. They also lost the German Super Cup (played between the reigning league and cup winners) 3-0 to RB Leipzig, with Kane playing less than half an hour off the bench.

It was another sad defeat for Harry Kane.Source: Getty Images

The Champions League was their last hope.

And when Kane played a delightful pass for Alphonso Davies to score a sublime goal in the 68th minute, it seemed that a finals date with their German rivals Borussia Dortmund – and a return to Wembley for Kane – was within reach.

But it all fell apart as the nigh-inevitable Madrid juggernaut fought back, scoring twice through an unlikely source in Joselu, a 34-year-old loanee from second-division Espanyol.

Kane, meanwhile, was substituted in a move that left commentators floored, given he is Munich’s penalty taker and a shootout was possible. Kane is also an asset in closing out games given his ability to hold up the ball and waste time, and to defend corners and crosses. His replacement was a straight swap for Eric-Maxim Chuopo-Moting – a striker who had scored just three times in 920 minutes across all competitions this season.

It wasn’t the only controversial substitution. Star attackers Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sane had both been taken off already by Thomas Tuchel, with Bayern going into a defensive shell that soon backfired.

But Tuchel after the game revealed that Kane’s substitution was forced, saying “He couldn’t keep going. He played with back pain and he couldn’t keep going, his back froze up.”

Perhaps the curse had found a new way to strike down Kane’s hopes, as the England superstar was left to watch from the sidelines as his Champions League dream faded away again.

It means that this season, for the first time in 12 years, Bayern will not win a trophy.

Harry Kane left England to win trophies, joining a club that has racked up silverware with ease – and somehow came up empty despite a maiden individual campaign for the ages.

Kane has never scored or assisted in a final, outside of his penalty shootout goal in the Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy.

And he has struggled to make an impact in many other crucial games, while key errors have also played a part in his failure to secure a single major trophy.

In the 2018 World Cup semi-final against Croatia, and with England leading 1-0, Kane opted to shoot instead of passing to a wide-open Raheem Sterling. His shot was saved and Kane’s follow-up hit the woodwork from just a metre or so out. England would collapse late in the match before losing in extra-time.

Kane after the Russia 2018 World Cup semi-final match against Croatia.Source: AFP

Four years later, he had the chance to make amends in the World Cup quarter-finals in Qatar. This time it was against France. Kane scored a penalty, before having another attempt from the 12-yard dot late in the game with England a goal down. But Kane blazed it off the top of the bar, and the Three Lions were dumped out by the reigning champions.

That’s not to say that Kane is to blame for his failure to win a trophy for club and country – tactics and teammates have let him down time and again. But in just over a month, Kane will captain England at the Euros in Germany – and it could be the perfect opportunity to finally end his trophy curse.

The world’s fourth-ranked side enter the tournament as favourites, with Kane second-favourite to take the golden boot behind France’s Kylian Mbappe. His scoring form is set to prove crucial to the Three Lions’ hopes, and if he performs in big games, he could just prove the doubters wrong.

Having moved to Germany to win trophies and seen that turn into a disastrous 12-year low for Bayern Munich, it would be fitting for Kane to guide England to glory on the soil of his new home.

If he does so, he would not only end his own personal curse, but the one that has doomed his national team to repeated failures in their long wait for a first major trophy since the 1966 World Cup.

  • Rain stifles Australia’s electric semi-final start

Rain stifles Australia’s electric semi-final start

Welcome to our live coverage of Australia’s World Cup semi-final clash with old foes South Africa from Kolkata.

Australia started this World Cup with losses to India and South Africa, and after rattling off seven straight wins, have the chance to avenge one in the hopes of making the final.

FOLLOW ALL THE ACTION LIVE AS IT HAPPENS

9:35PM: ZAMPA TIME, GOOD CALL OR BAD CALL?

Straight out of the break, Pat Cummins turns to his star spinner Adam Zampa.

You almost wonder whether they wanted to keep going with Mitch Starc and put the foot to the throat.

We know Zampa however has been able to both get wickets and keep the runs at a low rate.

Straight away he’s been on the money, where earlier in the tournament he was taking a few overs to get in the groove.

Cummins has however, decided to get Josh Hazlewood on after the restart, possibly to save Starc and himself for closer to an innings end if there is one?

I’m sure Cummins like all Aussie cricket fans is hoping this does not get near the 50-over mark, so as to avoid any issue with some rain.

And David Miller says time to get going, whacking Zampa for 6 over mid-on.

South Africa have hit the half-century mark, the second-slowest fifty of the tournament so far.

South Africa are 4/55 after 17 overs.

9:15PM: RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY ETC, ETC

You know the drizzle you walk to work from the train station in, then when you get into work you look dry, that’s what’s happening in Kolkata from all reports.

Which a) is promising and b) really annoying, with the hot start the Aussies have made.

The bright side of all of this, we can reflect on this exciting start from Australia, with Hazlewood and Starc bowling to almost their Test level, combined with some exceptional fielding.

The covers look to be coming off with South African 4/44 off 14 overs.

Play will restart at 9:25pm AEDT.

8:50PM: AND HERE COMES THE FUN-STEALER

Well, South Africa hit a couple of boundaries and Mother Nature says no that’s enough here comes the rain.

The covers are on in Kolkata, however only a small shower is expected.

However the rain has not been enough to quiten a ferocious crowd, who are almost epitomising the fielding we have seen from Australia to start this game.

Could this put an end to the roll the Aussies were on and given the reeling batting side the break they needed?

8:35PM: SOUTH AFRICA’S WORLD CUP SEMI MISERY ROLLS

    AND AGAIN! Hazlewood is relentless.

Pat Cummins took a chance keeping his spearheads on and it has paid off enormously.

Rassie van der Dussen has to go, caught at second slip by Steve Smith who half caught it and half-wedged it between his legs, but they all count.

Can’t quite say South Africa are known for their exploits in semi-finals in a positive way, but boy oh boy this is another level.

You often see sides losing wickets consistently while still keeping the runs flowing, but this almost feels like an Ashes game where it’s all in favour of the bowling side.

Can they find an answer or will this be wrapped up quickly?

The skipper Pat Cummins will come into the attack with South Africa already four down with a mere 34 runs on the board.

    8:20PM: KOLKATA PRESSURE COOKER

It took 52 balls, but we have a boundary in this game thanks to Markram, but these first 10 overs have been a bowling and fielding clinic by Australia.

Fielding was something of a worry to start this tournament, but the Aussies have really ramped it up as they started to compile wins.

This has been vintage Hazlewood and Starc, tightening the screws on their opponents, with the occasional Starc loosener but it’s par for the course.

The moisture in the surface has given the Aussies plenty more bounce compared to the last game at Kolkata.

There’s been some movement off the seam too, particularly for Hazlewood.

After 10 overs, South Africa have made only 18 runs!!

And now Markram goes, what is happening here?!?!?!

    8:00PM: GOOD TOSS TO LOSE????

Well with the possibility of rain you probably wanted to bat, however, this deck looks to have a bit of juice in it early on.

Could be the earliest of assumptions once these balls soften a little but alas!

Right now the Aussies are operating under total cloud coverage.

Josh Hazlewood has been able to get some serious bounce off the wicket, flying through to Inglis at head-height on multiple occasions.

The big Hoff has been operating at that 7m length consistently, a vintage touch.

The covers being on for so long due to the potential rain may have just kept a ton of moisture in this pitch.

It’s been tough sledding for South Africa early, managing just six runs off the first four overs, a mixture of tight bowling and some great fielding early on, particularly from David Warner and Glenn Maxwell on the off-side.

And the danger man is gone !!!!!

The consistency has gotten to Quinton de Kock, who went for one on a good length from Hazlewood, and trying to get on the front foot hits one straight into the air.

Pat Cummins settles under it at mid-on and takes a great catch.

What a start this is indeed.

7:40PM: THE WORLD CUP MASTER STRIKES EARLY

Mitch Starc has not had the tournament he would have liked, but he gets a dream start in the semi-final, knocking over the South African skipper with the sixth ball of the game.

A vintage Starc delivery drifts across the right-hander, thick edge and safely into the hands of Josh Inglis.

What a start to this one!

Bavuma battled hamstring concerns all week, at least for batting purposes that won’t be an issue now.

van der Dussen comes to the crease, who has played exceptionally across the tournament.

No secret of course, but Quinton de Kock is the wicket all Aussie cricket fans will be chasing early on.

The left-hander has been sensational at this tournament, whacking four centuries across the competition, including a 109 against Australia in Lucknow.

7:15PM: MARNUS WINS SELECTION BATTLE IN HUGE SEMI-FINAL CALL

Marnus Labuschagne has won the selection battle over Marcus Stoinis for the final spot in Australia’s XI for the World Cup semi-final.

Australia has chosen to go for extra batting depth over an additional all-rounder.

It is overcast but the rain has stayed away for now.

Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell return at the expense of Stoinis and Sean Abbott.

South Africa will bat first after winning the toss, with weather coming into some consideration of Temba Bavuma’s decision.

South Africa has made one change, dropping Lungi Ngidi for Tabraiz Shamsi.

Aussie skipper Pat Cummins said he would have batted if he had won the toss.

Labuschagne is an incredible story. Missed out on the 18-man squad and about to play his 18th straight ODI since that squad was named.

Unfortunately for Stoinis he just hasn’t contributed consistently enough with bat or ball to demand a spot in the XI. He has left himself vulnerable and it has cost him in the end.

For all the talk of splitting formats, Australia’s XI for the World Cup semi-final features eight of those who played the fifth Test at The Oval in late July.

Battle on two fronts: Australia’s plan for SA, rain revealed

A developing cyclone in the Bay of Bengal has threatened to derail Australia’s tilt for a sixth World Cup crown, with rain forecast at stages on both Thursday, the day of the match, and the reserve day on Friday.

Should tonight’s World Cup semi-final match be washed out, South Africa would advance as the higher-ranked side from the league phase – with the winner to take on India, after their demolition of New Zealand last night.

But captain Pat Cummins said Australia would not premeditate the weather, playing the scenario as it comes.

“One website tells you something, and another website tells you the opposite. It’s something you think about,” Cummins said.

“We’ll turn up, expect to play a 50-over match, and if that shifts on us well (we’ll deal with it).”

Meanwhile, Cummins says his players will draw on experience from previous title wins in the clash with South Africa, spurred on by Glenn Maxwell’s heroics having given them “an extra leg”.

Five-time winners Australia went down to the Proteas in the league stage by 134 runs before they won seven straight matches to make the semi-final in Kolkata on Thursday.

Australia, who lost an ODI series in South Africa in September, have beaten their rivals twice in World Cup semi-finals.

“You start from scratch every time you play,” Cummins said.

“They’re a team we’ve played quite a lot and know quite well.

“I think what helps us is we’ve got a lot of guys that have been in this situation before that have won the one-day World Cup, T20 World Cup, various other tournaments in big moments.

“So, I think that really helps. You can draw on that in the middle of the contest.”

  • Matildas inspire $200m government commitment to equipment, changing rooms

Matildas inspire $200m government commitment to equipment, changing rooms

When the Matildas lost the World Cup semi-final to England this week, captain Sam Kerr was clear: greater investment may have prevented the team from falling at the final hurdle.

After the lead-up was dominated by conversations about a public holiday, Kerr said the Matildas would prefer to leave a legacy of funding.

“We need funding in our development, we need funding in our grassroots. We need funding everywhere,” she said.

The Matildas may have not have won the grand final – or secured Australians a public holiday – but their legacy is set to be immortalised with a “significant” $200 million commitment to funding women’s sport.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will announce on Saturday morning the “Play Our Way” program, to improve sporting facilities and equipment specifically for women and girls.

He said the Matildas, alongside the Diamonds and the Wallaroos had captured the nation’s hearts and “changed Australian sport forever”, and that momentum must “ripple through generations”.

“The Matildas have given us a moment of national inspiration. This is about seizing that opportunity for the next generation, investing in community sporting facilities for women and girls around Australia,” Mr Albanese said.

“We want women and girls everywhere in Australia to have the facilities and the support to choose a sport they love.”

Sports Minister Anika Wells said the $200m would be spent on helping the “next generation” of female athletes enjoy safer sporting facilities.

“Too often women and girls are changing in men‘s bathrooms, wearing hand me down boys uniforms, playing with men’s equipment on poor fields that boys teams wouldn’t train on,” she said.

The program will be available for all sports, but given soccer is the highest participation sport in the country – with around 1.5 million players nationally – it’s anticipated it will need “significant resourcing” in the wake of the Matildas’ impressive campaign.

Professional Footballers Australia co-chief executive Beau Busch said one-off “sugar hits” of funding from landmark events was a really important part of the strategy moving forward, but stressed the funding needed to trickle down.

“What we need to move towards is this sustainable and consistent level of investment from government that can allow us to make continual progress, rather than the sort of one off big investments into major, major, major events,” Mr Busch added.

“But equally what we need to do is ensure this consistent investment so we can build great professional leagues, and a really great grassroots experience as well.”

Australians young and old jumped on the bandwagon over the past month, captured by the story and success of the Matildas – who will play off for third place in the World Cup on Saturday against Sweden.

Man arrested for T-shirt referencing Hillsborough disaster at FA Cup final

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing a public order offence for wearing a T-shirt referencing the Hillsborough disaster.

An image was posted to social media of the man wearing a Manchester United shirt with the words “not enough” and the number 97.

That’s the number of mostly Liverpool supporters who were killed in the 15 April, 1989 crush at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England,

The fatal incident took place during the FA Cup semi-final match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

Along with the 97 deaths, 766 people were injured when fans rushed into two standing-only central pens, leading to a crowd crush.

London’s Metropolitan Police Service issued a statement in response to the social media post of the man, writing: “#ARREST | We are aware of this and have worked proactively with officials at [Wembley Stadium] to identify the individual. He has been arrested on suspicion of a public order offence and taken into custody.”

A photo posted on social media later appeared to show the man handcuffed and being taken into custody.

“Let this be a warning to anyone else thinking of doing anything similar. And that goes for using ANY tragedy,” Hillsborough Survivors Support Alliance posted on Twitter.

The man was arrested by London police. Picture: TwitterSource: Supplied

“Vile” chants and songs related to disasters have marred the game.

Managers Jurgen Klopp and Erik ten Hag both recently joined forces to try and stamp out the practice.

Hag said: “It is unacceptable to use the loss of life – in relation to any tragedy – to score points, and it is time for it to stop.

“Those responsible tarnish not only the reputation of our clubs but also, importantly, the reputation of themselves, the fans, and our great cities.”

Klopp added: “We do want the occasion to be partisan and we do want the atmosphere to be electric,” the Liverpool manager said.

“What we do not want is anything that goes beyond this and this applies especially to the kind of chants that have no place in football.”

The FA, Premier League and football clubs have also made multiple calls for supporters not to make references to the Hillsborough disaster, as well as the Heysel Stadium crowd disaster of 1985 and the Munich air crash of 1958, The Independent reports.

Eight Manchester United players and three staff members died in the Munich disaster while 39 fans died in the tragedy at Heysel Stadium in Brussels.

Postecoglou’s perfect one-line reply to ‘lucky’ criticism as Celtic seals spot in Scottish Cup final

Celtic remained on course for a domestic treble after Jota’s first-half header proved the difference in a 1-0 Scottish Cup semi-final win over arch Glasgow rivals Rangers at Hampden Park on Sunday.

The Hoops, runaway leaders of the Scottish Premiership, have already defeated Rangers in this season’s Scottish League Cup final.

And they will be overwhelming favourites when they return to Hampden for the Scottish Cup final against second-tier Inverness on June 3.

EPL Wrap: Brighton grab biggest ever win | 01:31

Portuguese star Jota scored the only goal of Sunday’s match three minutes before half-time when he punished careless defending by heading in past goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

Borna Barisic and several other Rangers players stopped, anticipating a foul near the edge of the penalty area, and that allowed Japan’s Daizen Maeda to steal in and whip the ball across goal.

Jota could hardly miss with the close-range header after stealing away from Rangers captain James Tavernier.

Cup-holders Rangers had several chances to equalise, however, with Tavernier hitting the post in the second half and Fashion Sakala missing an open goal from the rebound.

Their failure to make the most of their opportunities meant Celtic gained a measure of revenge for their semi-final defeat by Rangers last season.

“It’s a semi-final, there’s a big prize at the end so we knew it wouldn’t be easy,” Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou told the BBC.

“Dare I say it, we never stop. We’re always alert. We force the opposition into mistakes.

“The progress we’ve made has been immense. It’s credit to everyone involved.”

Postecoglou, meanwhile, delivered a perfect one-line response to any critics who claim Celtic are “lucky”.

For reference, Rangers coach Michael Beale previously claimed Postecoglou was a “lucky man” for being able to spend so much money on new signings.

There have also been more general claims in mainstream media that Celtic has been fortunate at times during recent derby games.

I get the narrative will be lucky again but that’s alright,” Postecoglou said, before delivering that perfect one-line reply.

“We’ll just keep winning games of football,” he said.

“We defended really well,” added Postecoglou.

“Our two centre-halves were outstanding. I thought the work rate of our front players, I mean Daizen Maeda was incredible, particularly in the first half. You have to earn these things.

“I was really pleased that this team showed they can be resilient as well as play the football we know they can.”

Sky Blues win set up elimination derby! | 00:33

Sunday’s result meant Beale has not beaten Celtic in four attempts since taking over as Rangers manager last November, while Rangers have not won an Old Firm game in six attempts.

“We shot ourselves in the foot again,” said Beale. “We kept Allan (McGregor) pretty much safe the whole game.

“We’ve made a big mistake in a huge game. It’s a repeat of what’s happened. Right now, it’s massive disappointment. When our opportunities came, we weren’t able to take them.”
