India delivered a dominant performance in the fifth and final T20I against England at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, securing a massive 150-run victory to seal the series 4-1. Batting first, India posted a mammoth total of 247/9, courtesy of a breathtaking 135 off 54 balls from Abhishek Sharma. England, in response, faltered under the pressure of a record chase and were bundled out for just 97 in 10.3 overs, with Mohammed Shami, Shivam Dube and Abhishek starring with the ball. The emphatic win showcased India’s superior firepower and tactical acumen, leaving England with no answers to the hosts’ aggressive approach.

Abhishek Sharma’s carnage and India’s explosive batting display

Put in to bat, India got off to a brisk start despite losing Sanju Samson early for 16. The stage was then taken over by Abhishek, who produced a sensational knock, hammering 135 runs off just 54 balls, laced with seven fours and 13 sixes. His blistering strike rate of 250 kept England bowlers on the back foot as he single-handedly dominated the innings. Tilak Varma (24 off 15) played a brief supporting role before Dube (30 off 13) added further impetus to the total. The middle and lower order could not contribute significantly, but India’s aggressive approach ensured they amassed a formidable 247/9 in 20 overs. England’s bowlers struggled, with Brydon Carse (3/38) being the only standout performer amid the onslaught.

England collapse under pressure in record chase

Chasing a daunting target of 248, England had a promising start as Phil Salt blazed his way to a rapid 55 off 23 balls, striking seven boundaries and three sixes. However, his dismissal triggered a complete batting collapse, with wickets falling in quick succession. Shami (3/25) made early inroads, removing Ben Duckett and later wrapping up the tail. Varun Chakravarthy (2/25) and Dube (2/11) played crucial roles in dismantling England’s lineup.

Harry Brook, Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone all failed to provide resistance, and England’s innings crumbled within 10.3 overs for a meager 97. The Indian bowlers executed their plans perfectly, ensuring an emphatic conclusion to a dominant series victory. With this win, India not only claimed the series 4-1 but also sent a strong message with their aggressive batting and disciplined bowling performances.

‘We should have got that one run’ – Disappointed Rohit Sharma reacts to dramatic tie against Sri Lanka in first ODI

India were on the verge of picking up a win against Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the series in Colombo. The visitors needed just one run in 15 balls and Shivam Dube was on strike, who failed to finish it off. Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka trapped Dube, who was bamboozled as the ball went to hit his pads. The on-field umpire gave not-out but a review was taken, which sent Dube back to the pavilion.

Arshdeep Singh replaced him in the middle who too was trapped by Asalanka. The youngster tried to sweep but the ball went onto his leg. The umpire raised his finger immediately and Sri Lanka players were elated after pulling off a draw. India captain Rohit Sharma meanwhile was disappointed and believed that they should have chased it down. Chasing 231 runs, the captain made 58 runs and gave the team a good start but there wasn’t any significant contribution from the middle-order batters, which led to the draw.

After the game, Rohit stated that the score was gettable and the players batted well in patches. He was happy with the effort that was put in by the players but was equally disappointed for not being able to cross the finishing line.

“The score was gettable, just that you had to bat well to get there. We batted well in patches. Disappointed to not get 1 run with 14 balls, but won’t read (into it) too much. The bite was there at the start and then the ball became softer as the seam wore off. It was not a game where you can play your shots, [you] had to apply yourself and dig in. Proud of how we fought, it was important to hold our nerve. But we should have got that one run,” Rohit said in the post-match presentation.

However, Shubman Gill struggled and was dismissed for 16 off 35 balls by Wellalage, with Kusal Mendis taking a catch off a top edge. Rohit was also dismissed by Wellalage, who trapped him in front of the stumps. Washington Sundar, promoted to number four, could not make an impact and was dismissed for 5 off 4 balls by Akila Dananjaya, leaving India at 87/3 after 15.4 overs.

With the match finely poised, KL Rahul and Axar Patel added a crucial 57-run stand for the sixth wicket off 94 balls. IND vs ZIM 2024: Shivam Dube replaces injured Nitish Reddy

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named Shivam Dube as the replacement for the injured Nitish Reddy in the Indian squad for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe.

India are set to face Zimbabwe in a five-match T20I series next month, starting with the first game on July 6. All five matches are scheduled to be held at the Harare Sports Club. The BCCI recently announced a 15-member squad for the first assignment of the Indian team following the 2024 T20 World Cup. Shubman Gill has been given the responsibility of leading the side for the first time.

The Punjab batter has several youngsters in the squad as most of the senior players have been rested. Nitish, who won the Emerging Player award in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year, was among the four players who had received their maiden call-ups to the national team. However, in a heartbreaking turn of events, the Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder will have to vacate his position as he is nursing an undisclosed injury.

  • Lack of all-rounders is a weakness for India: Sanjay Manjrekar

Lack of all-rounders is a weakness for India: Sanjay Manjrekar

Indian team has been grappling with the option of having multiple all-rounders in the team specifically at the ICC events. For a long period, Hardik Pandya has been the go-to all-rounder for the team and the team has failed to produce a similar weapon over the years. Axar Patel is being nurtured as the spinning all-rounder but he is mostly seen performing in Tests.

With T20 World Cup 2024 ringing bells, the Indian team has inducted Shivam Dube as another all-rounding option. But, Dube has hardly bowled recently, neither for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL nor for the Indian team. He was given the ball against Afghanistan in the T20I series in January and had done reasonably well. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar took note of the aspect and exemplified Australia in producing ample all-rounders compared to India.

Also Read: T20 World Cup 2024: Indian team unhappy with average facilities in New York

“Lack of all-rounders is a bit of a weakness for Team India. If you look at Australia, their batters like Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, and Cameron Green can bowl four overs in a match. I think that’s why the Indian team has brought Shivam Dube into the side to mitigate the limitations that come with a lack of all-rounders,” said Manjrekar at Star Sports Press Room.

“Yes, it’s a small weakness, and now with the impact substitute rule in the IPL, this problem might increase. We currently rely on specialist bowlers and batters, but in this World Cup, the team will need to make some adjustments, and someone will have to bowl at least two to three overs in a match,” he added.

India eye domination in group stage of T20 World Cup 2024

India are placed in Group A of the T20 World Cup 2024 with Pakistan as the other formidable opponent. Rohit Sharma and Co. will take on Ireland in their World Cup opener on June 5 in New York. Before the tournament opener, India will play a warm-up game against their Asian counterpart Bangladesh on June 1. The other teams in Group A are the United States of America and Canada.
