‘Extremely sick’: Olympian, fellow radio host in tears as host gone after shocking Matildas attack

Former Australian swimmer turned radio commentator Leisel Jones has issued a tear-jerking statement on air this morning in the wake of Marty Sheargold’s appalling comments about female sport.

His show did not air on Wednesday afternoon and Triple M has since made the call to part ways with Sheargold, with the station announcing they had “mutually agreed” to the decision.

“Southern Cross Austereo takes its responsibility to listeners, shareholders and clients seriously and its programming should align with the standards and expectations of its audience,” SCA Chief Content Officer Dave Cameron said in a statement.

“Right now, it’s clear this is a moment for reflection and review. Triple M, and the wider SCA network, will continue to take all necessary steps to support staff.”

Sheargold said: “Having mutually agreed to part ways with the Triple M Network, I fully understand the gravity of my comments.

“I’d like to sincerely apologise to the Matildas and the broader organisation. I would also like to thank my immediate team for their hard work and apologise for the situation they now find themselves in.”

Matildas interim coach Tom Sermanni said sports teams were “used to criticism” but Sheargold’s comments “crossed the line”.

“It’s completely unnecessary and generally outrageous, and, it’s something that from a behavioural perspective, is really very, very disappointing,” he said.

“For me, it’s not so much about sexism and misogyny, in a sense, although that’s unacceptable – let me make that clear.

“It’s what the comments were. The comments just crossed the line. They were just basically out of order and very, very unnecessary.

“Our team is obviously a very high-profile team, and being a high-profile team, you do take criticism, you do create criticism sometimes very near the edge, but sometimes that just goes over the edge, and those comments did that.”

Jones, 39, a nine-time Olympic medallist who co-hosts Triple M Breakfast on the Gold Coast, admitted to listeners she found it hard to front up to work on Wednesday after Sheargold made disparaging comments about the Matildas and women’s sport on his own Triple M show Monday afternoon.

Jones revealed she had been ambushed by dozens of negative comments on her Instagram account in the aftermath from people questioning why she hadn’t taken a stand on Tuesday’s show.

Speaking on-air Wednesday morning, an emotional Jones said she felt “extremely sick” by Sheargold’s comments, while also feeling forced to address why she was yet to talk about the controversy.

“I’m not going to cry. I’m not going to cry,” Jones, who was audibly sobbing, began.

“The comments are so hurtful against women’s sport that The Marty Sheargold Show shared. And obviously I’ve been quite upset all morning, and I was upset when I came in. I’ve been on and off the show all morning.

“It’s a very tricky position to be put in when Triple M is my place of employment, and obviously I love working on the show and I find it incredibly challenging to be put in a position where I become the unofficial spokesperson for women in sport.”

She continued, “Obviously, everyone would know I was a woman in sport. I’ve competed at the top level for women in sport and I am one of the biggest supporters. And when I woke up this morning and I came to work, I was bombarded with messages of why I wasn’t responding, why I didn’t say anything on social media.

“And I think a lot of people need to understand that it’s very hard when you’re in this position to say the things that you would really like to say. I would love to say all of these things. I have so many things inside that I would love to say I am the biggest supporter of women in sport.”

That aside, Jones went on to speak directly to the “little boys or girls” who might have heard Sheargold’s comments on their drive home from school.

“Please know that you are welcome to play sport … Sorry, I’m upset,” she said, her voice breaking.

“You are welcome to play sport to whatever level. You don’t have to be a midfielder. You don’t have to be an Olympian. You just play sport because sport is so wonderful.

“The biggest thing we could ask for is men to be on our side, when it comes to women in sport, because it’s always an uphill battle. To be paid less, to get less coverage, to not get the credit they deserve.”

Finally, Jones issued a message to the Matildas, who were the main target of Sheargold’s spray, saying, “I think it’s so important to know they are inspiring, no matter what level they get to. Please know you are inspiring so many people.”

Sheargold’s controversial comments came after the Matildas kicked off their campaign in the annual SheBelieves Cup with a heavy 4-0 defeat to Japan on Friday, and then followed up with a 2-1 loss to the US three days later.

“There’s something wrong with the Matildas,” Sheargold said on Monday’s show.

“They had that wonderful tournament out here where we all fell in love with them, even though they didn’t make the quarters.

“You know what they remind me of? Year 10 girls,” Sheargold continued.

“All the infighting and all the friendship issues, ‘the coach hates me and I hate bloody training and Michelle’s being a b**ch’.

“Now I’m sorry to undermine the whole sport, but that’s what I think of it so you can stick it up your arse.”

Sheargold later apologised for his outburst. Picture: Supplied/Triple MSource: Supplied

Co-host Will Ralston attempted to continue reading the news, referencing the name of the tournament, which prompted Sheargold to say, “Oh, she believes in what? It better be men.”

Ralston continued with the sports report, saying, “We’re 12 months out from Australia hosting the Women’s Asian Cup, so hopefully we have a better runway to improve before that comes around.”

Sheargold responded, “Oh god. The Asian Cup. I’d rather hammer a nail through the head of my penis than watch that … Got any men’s sport?”

The 53-year-old later responded to the backlash on social media in a statement released by the radio network.

“Any comedy, including mine, can miss the mark sometimes, and I can see why people may have taken offence to my comments regarding the Matildas. I sincerely apologise,” he said.

A spokesperson for Southern Cross Austereo, Triple M’s parent company, also said, “Marty Sheargold’s comments regarding the Matildas — made during Triple M Drive on Monday, 24 February — do not align with Triple M’s views and values, and Triple M remains steadfast in its strong support of all women’s and men’s sports.

“We are sorry for any offence caused.”

‘Completely unnecessary’: Coach reacts to ‘outrageous’ Matildas comments ahead of key match

Matildas interim coach Tom Sermanni has condemned the “completely unnecessary and outrageous” comments made by radio presenter Marty Sheargold about women’s football but insists they haven’t affected Australia’s preparations for Thursday’s match against Colombia in San Diego.

Triple M on Wednesday apologised for the Sheargold’s comments, which were made on Monday on his afternoon radio show.

Sheargold said he would rather “hammer a nail through the head of my penis” than watch women’s football and he was “sorry to undermine the whole sport, but that’s what I think of it so you can stick it up your arse”.

Sheargold’s comments also included a reference to the name of the tournament the Matildas are playing in, the She Believes Cup, saying, “Oh she believes in what? It better be men.”

Football Australia on Wednesday issued a statement, saying it was “deeply disappointed by the unacceptable comments” and they “not only diminish the extraordinary achievements and contributions of our women’s national football team but also fail to recognise the profound impact they have had on Australian sport and society”.

Sermanni said sports teams were “used to criticism” but Sheargold’s comments “crossed the line”.

Triple M’s statement included a personal apology from Sheargold.

“Any comedy, including mine, can miss the mark sometimes, and I can see why people may have taken offence at my comments regarding the Matildas,” he said.

    “I sincerely apologise.”

Sermanni said his team had moved on from the matter and was concentrating on beating Colombia after losses to Japan (4-0) and USA (2-1).

“We’ll put that behind us … we’re here to play football,” he said.

“The players have just completely focused on the game.”

Sermanni was expecting a “physical” contest similar to Australia’s two matches against Brazil – won 3-1 and 2-1 by the South Americans – in Queensland last year.

“(It will) probably be more of a Brazil-style game that … so that’d be more a very physical game,” he said.

“They’ve got a couple of outstanding players in the line-up. We need to look after them, and being South American, they’ve got a certain rhythm, a certain way of playing that’s a little bit different to the Japanese and a little bit different to the Americans.”

Having been “bullied” by Japan last week, Sermanni was happier with the amount of challenges his side won against the Americans on Monday and wants more of the same on Thursday.

“We had a pretty serious chat after the first game (against Japan), and I think the players responded magnificently in that second game,” he said.

‘Deeply disappointed’: Football Australia responds to radio host’s shocking attack on Matildas

WARNING: This article contains language that some readers may find offensive

Comments live on-air from Triple M radio personality Marty Sheargold about Australia’s Matildas have been blasted as “disgusting” and “a f**king joke” — with the comedian since apologising, while Football Australia called the incident “deeply disappointing”.

The Matildas, Australia’s wildly popular national football side, are in the United States competing in the annual SheBelieves Cup along with Japan, Colombia and the host nation.

When the Triple M program and podcast, The Marty Sheargold Show, began discussing the Tillies’ results in the tournament on Monday afternoon, the host took the opportunity to express his feelings towards the team and women’s sport in general.

It’s understood the station has been flooded with complaints after the comments were posted on social media late on Tuesday.

Australia opened the event with a heavy 4-0 defeat to Japan on Friday (AEDT) and then followed up with an improved 2-1 loss to the US three days later.

It’s worth noting that when Sheargold began Monday’s show, he started with the message to listeners: “Little ears warning for the following podcast.

“It’s probably not for kids, there’s some adult concepts, not just today, every day.

    “Buyer beware as they say.”

But we’ll leave it up to you to decide whether that is warning enough for what transpired live on Monday afternoon.

The discussion between Sheargold and co-hosts Troy Ellis and Will Ralson began with Ralston mentioning the tournament to date.

“In football or soccer it’s been a nightmare tournament for the Matildas over the last three or four days over in the US,” Ralston said.

Sheargold immediately jumped in with the following rant, including downplaying – unintentionally or otherwise – the Matildas’ semi-final appearance at the 2023 FIFA World Cup on home soil.

“There’s something wrong with the Matildas,” Sheargold began.

“They had that wonderful tournament out here where we all fell in love with them, even though they didn’t make the quarters.

“You know what they remind me of? Year 10 girls,” Sheargold continued, as laughter rang out in the background.

“All the infighting and all the friendship issues, ‘the coach hates me and I hate bloody training and Michelle’s being a bitch’.

“Now I’m sorry to undermine the whole sport, but that’s what I think of it so you can stick it up your arse.”

Sheargold only returned to the airwaves late last year after a high-profile end to his previous morning show on Triple M in late 2023.

The broadcaster and actor announced at the time he was taking an extended break to spend more time with family and “prioritise self-care (and) maintaining a better work/life balance”.

After a period of sobriety, Sheargold hit the headlines following a drunken incident at the 2023 AFL grand final, leading to his decision to step away from the spotlight.

Ralston then tried to continue with the sports news bulletin, stating: “So we’re playing in the SheBelieves Cup.”

Sheargold jumped in, screaming “Oh, she believes in what? It better be men” as more laughter rang out.

After a conversation about Sam Kerr and her partner, American footballer Kristie Mewis, which included Sheargold’s question “do they play the same position?”, Ralson tried again to keep the bulletin moving.

“We’re 12 months out from Australia hosting the Women’s Asian Cup, so hopefully we have a better runway to improve before that comes around,” he said.

Sheargold responded: “Oh god. The Asian Cup. I’d rather hammer a nail through the head of my penis than watch that,” as a sound affect and more laughs were heard.

    “Got any men’s sport?”

Ralston replied: “Yeah I do, baseball, the New York Yankees have dropped their 49-year ban on beards, on facial hair.”

“Now this is a good story,” Sheargold responded.

The exchange came to light after Olympic hockey player Ambrosia Malone posted part of it on TikTok with the following caption: “I honestly don’t know what is wrong with the world.

“I heard this on the radio yesterday in prime time (5.30pm) on the way to training and all I could think about was the young girls sitting in the car with their parents, maybe on the way to or from their own training sessions hearing this.

“I’m sure many of them would have been hurt and confused … I was in disbelief.

“This is apparently acceptable on mainstream afternoon radio??? HOW??”

She added: “I’d name the station and speaker, but I don’t want to reward their behaviour with publicity.”

There was a strong reaction on the platform, with many stating the same disbelief at the comments and asking for the station to be named.

“It’s worth lodging a complaint about this,” was one reply. “If you provide the station and time then I’m sure a few people would be interested in also lodging a complaint.”

Another wrote: “Is this a f**king joke?!? I feel like I’m living in a simulation. That cannot be a real recording.”

“This CAN’T be real,” added a third.

After the station and host was added to the comments, a vast number confirmed they had lodged a complaint with Triple M.

News.com.au has reached out to Triple M for comment.

Meanwhile, more prominent female athletes voiced their anger.

Swimming great Libby Trickett commented: “I’m livid. It’s 2025 and this isn’t funny.”

Netballer Gretel Bueta commented “Yuk”, while Diamonds great Bianca Chatfield left an angry face emoji.

Sheargold has apologised amid the backlash, claimed his joke missed the mark.

“Any comedy, including mine, can miss the mark sometimes, and I can see why people may have taken offence to my comments regarding the Matildas. I sincerely apologise,’’ he said.

Triple M distanced itself from the comments, without indicating whether any disciplinary action would be taken against Sheargold.

An SCA spokesperson said: “Marty Sheargold’s comments regarding the Matildas — made during Triple M Drive on Monday, 24 February — do not align with Triple M’s views and values, and Triple M remains steadfast in its strong support of all women’s and men’s sports. We are sorry for any offence caused.”

Football Australia later issued a statement.

“Football Australia is deeply disappointed by the unacceptable comments made by Marty Sheargold on Triple M regarding the CommBank Matildas. Such remarks not only diminish the extraordinary achievements and contributions of our women’s national football team but also fail to recognise the profound impact they have had on Australian sport and society.

“The CommBank Matildas have inspired a new generation of Australians from young boys and girls to men and women who now see a future for themselves in football and sport more broadly. They have broken barriers, set new standards, and elevated the game to unprecedented heights. Their success has been instrumental in transforming women’s sport in Australia, and they deserve to be covered with the respect and professionalism they have earned.

“While we acknowledge the apologies issued by both Triple M and Marty Sheargold, this incident is a stark reminder of the responsibility media outlets and personalities have in fostering respectful and constructive discussions about women’s sport and its participants. Every comment, every report, and every discussion shape public perception and reinforces our society’s values toward women and girls in sport.”

  • Spanish government’s World Cup blunder proves they just don’t get it

Spanish government’s World Cup blunder proves they just don’t get it

The Spanish Government has made a ridiculous blunder, seemingly mistaking the sister of Argentinian football Mauro Icardi for its own World Cup winning captain.

The Official State Gazette of Spain have awarded the Spanish women’s national team the Royal Order of Sports Merit for their success during the World Cup this summer.

Stream Over 50 Sports Live & On-Demand with Kayo. Join now and start streaming instantly >

But the official release has made an enormous mistake when printing the names of those being honoured by the government, as spotted by Spanish newspaper MARCA.

The first name on the list was printed as Ivana Icardi Rivero, the sister of Galatasaray footballer Mauro Icardi.

But Ivana is not a footballer and isn’t even Spanish.

She is instead an Argentinian influencer and model who had nothing to do with Spain’s heroics in Australia and New Zealand.

The mistake appears to be a shocking typo with the first name on the list actually supposed to be Spain captain Ivana Andres.

Ivana Icardi Rivero of Argentina. Photo: InstagramSource: Instagram

And it’s not the only mistake made by those in charge of the list of honorees either.

Barcelona and Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati, who was named both the UEFA player of the year and the World Cup’s best player, also had her name misspelt on the published list.

Her full name is in fact Aitana Bonmati Conca, but it was written instead with an extra “S” as Aitana Bonmati Concas.

MARCA reported that the mistakes have since been noticed and the Higher Sports Council have admitted that there was human error when producing the honours list.

The organisation is said to have now apologised for their mistake and sent letters to those individuals who have been affected.

But it’s hardly the mistake the world would have liked to have seen after the dramas which have overshadowed the team’s historic World Cup victory.

Spain’s World Cup win made them the second nation to win both the men’s and women’s titles.

The side did it despite being without 12 of its best players after a revolt over coach Jorge Vilda, who has since been sacked by Spain.

And paired with the Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales’ kiss scandal, which has seen him stood down by FIFA as they investigate and over 80 players pledge not to represent the national team while he is still in place, it makes the blunder just so much worse.

  • ‘Hostile to America’: Trump‘s predictable eruption on ‘woke’ US soccer team

‘Hostile to America’: Trump‘s predictable eruption on ‘woke’ US soccer team

Former President Donald Trump has taken to his social media platform to slam the US women’s football team in a typically unhinged rant.

The fallout has been enormous since the top-ranked Americans suffered a shock penalty shootout defeat to Sweden on Sunday night in the round of 16.

It is the earliest the team had ever lost at the tournament, reaching at least the semi-finals in every edition of the World Cup, winning it four times.

Coming into this year’s event as the two-time defending champions, they were overwhelming favourites to win it all again, despite selecting an ageing and largely untested line-up.

Trump, who is the leading Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election, couldn’t resist the opportunity to slam a team he has had a number of run-ins with in the past.

Taking to Truth Social – an alternative and extreme social media platform set up by Trump after he was banned by multiple others – the 77-year-old unleashed.

Donald Trump on Truth SocialSource: Twitter

“The “shocking and totally unexpected” loss by the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team to Sweden is fully emblematic of what is happening to the our (sic) once great Nation under Crooked Joe Biden,” he wrote.

“Many of our players were openly hostile to America – No other country behaved in such a manner, or even close.

“WOKE EQUALS FAILURE. Nice shot Megan, the USA is going to Hell!!! MAGA.”

The last line is a reference to the penalty miss by outspoken US star Megan Rapinoe as the Swede’s progressed 5-4.

It’s not the first time Trump has taken an aggressive stance against the American team.

After the US ended with a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games, Trump blamed the “leftist maniacs” on the team.

“If our soccer team, headed by a radical group of leftist maniacs, wasn’t woke, they would have won the gold medal instead of the bronze,” he said in a statement he released back in August 2021.

“Woke means you lose, everything that is woke goes bad, and our soccer team certainly has.”

Members of the US team have previously not stood for the country’s national anthem or, as has been the case during this World Cup, refused to sing.

Trump went on to target Rapinoe after the Olympics result, a player named the world’s best in 2019 who has a history of political activism.

“The woman with the purple hair played terribly and spends too much time thinking about radical left politics and not doing her job!,” he said.

In the bronze medal match, which was against Australia’s Matildas, Rapinoe scored two of the four goals and was key to the team’s bronze medal victory.

The former Republican President and the American woman’s football team have not been on good terms since the group declined an invitation to the White House after winning the 2019 World Cup.

  • US soccer team roasted over incredibly cocky World Cup ad

US soccer team roasted over incredibly cocky World Cup ad

The fallout from the US team’s elimination from the Women’s World Cup is gathering pace as fans in America pile on a side being labelled “arrogant and unlikeable”.

The two-time defending champion American line-up was an overwhelming favourite to make it three straight titles in the event being co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Even after a patchy group stage, when the US did enough to beat Vietnam 3-0, managed a draw with the Netherlands and only just escaped with a 0-0 draw against Portugal to progress, they were still the tournament favourites.

But that all collapsed around them when Sweden withstood a barrage from the American team to knock them out in an extraordinary penalty shootout on Sunday night.

Images of polarising star Megan Rapinoe laughing after missing her penalty have created a stir as this veteran US team suffered its worst ever World Cup result.

A commercial created by US World Cup hosts Fox Sports has since been doing the rounds on social media and it’s fair to say it has not aged well.

It starts with the line: “The whole world is wondering, what’s it going to take to stop this US team?”

A 1:25 long ad then weaves its way through a series of heavy, outdated stereotypes of countries trying new ways to compete with the Americans.

It has British people in dreary weather sitting on a London bus, Brazilians on the beach and some Germans in a lab using artificial intelligence “that mimmicks their every move”.

There is also a shady looking Italian complete with black turtle neck and black leather jacket overlooking US training who states: “We could steal their plays.”

A drone with Italian colours and an Italian flag on it, just in case we missed the subtlety, is then knocked out of the sky by American midfielder Rose Lavelle.

Sweden players celebrate after Rapinoe missed her penalty during the shootout. (Photo by Quinn Rooney/Getty Images)Source: Getty Images

We can’t be sure, but there also appears to be an attempt at an Australian accent, with a blonde woman in a gold shirt and green and gold tie working in an airport with “Sydney” on an arrivals board over her shoulder saying “their flights could get cancelled”.

Without any hyperbole, the ad ends with a woman stating: “I mean, the entire world is going to do whatever it takes to stop the US.”

Veteran striker Alex Morgan then replies “good luck with that” with a half-smile before jogging off on the pitch.

The ad was re-posted on Twitter following the American’s loss with the caption: “Well isn’t this hilarious now?”

And the reaction has been swift and entertaining.

Noted American soccer analyst and ex-national team player Alexi Lalas also did not hold back in his assessment of the current women’s team.

While this US team earned widespread acclaim for its ultimately successful push for equal prizemoney for the country’s male and female teams, it has also been hammered in some circles for focusing too much on issues away from the pitch.

“Don’t kill the messenger. This #USWNT is polarizing,” Lalas wrote. “Politics, causes, stances, & behavior have made this team unlikeable to a portion of America.

“This team has built its brand and has derived its power from being the best/winning. If that goes away they risk becoming irrelevant.”

The defeat to Sweden capped off a terrible World Cup in general for the Americans.

It wasn’t just the round of 16 defeat to the Swedes, who are ranked third in the FIFA rankings behind the US and Germany.

Megan Rapinoe and an actress attempting an Australian accent.Source: Twitter
A very subtle Italian portrayed in the commercial.Source: Twitter

The US team was also slammed for its celebratory reaction to the 0-0 draw against Portugal.

They were then savaged and seemingly outraged an entire state when an attempt to show its affinity for the city of Melbourne was ruined by the use of the term “Melby” on social media, a term no one has ever used and will now be etched in infamy.

Plenty more reaction to the Fox Sports ad revolves around the Swedish team.

There are a number of shoutouts to the Swedish players, while someone also superimposed a Swedish flag onto the VAR graphic of the team’s winning goal.

A gif of Swedish heroes, defender Amanda Ilestedt and goalkeeper and player of the match Zecira Musovic, popping up and waving also seems a perfect way to answer the question: “What’s it going to take to stop this US team?”

‘Never witnessed that before’: USA torn to shreds over World Cup act

The United States are on the verge of crisis after surviving elimination by just millimetres in a wild end to their Women’s World Cup group stage match against Portugal.

The reigning champions dodged disaster in a dour 0-0 draw at Eden Park in New Zealand on Tuesday night.

The US, who have won the last two Women’s World Cup titles, survived by the width of a post with a draw was good enough for them to finish second in group E. It was almost curtains for the powerhouse American team when Portugal substitute Ana Capeta had a golden opportunity to score in the 92nd minute, only to see her shot bounce off the post.

The team’s lacklustre performances have been widely criticised by football pundits around the world, and one star’s act after the game has particularly angered America.

American football legend Carli Lloyd was scathing of the moment members of the United States team celebrated with fans after the match.

Meanwhile, other team members, including Megan Rapinoe, were also seen dancing after surviving through to a Round of 16 match against the top team from Group G, which will be decided on Wednesday.

Lloyd was staggered at the celebratory acts from the American players. The most eyebrow-raising one came when Trinity Rodman and Kelley O’Hara were seen taking photos and high-fiving fans after the team’s worst-ever performance in World Cup group stage with five points.

“I have never witnessed something like that. There’s a difference between being respectful of the fans and saying hello to your family,” Lloyd said on Fox Sports’ World Cup post-game show.

“But to be dancing, to be smiling. I mean, the player of the match was that post. You were lucky to not be going home right now.”

She said the team’s “uninspiring” effort was nothing to celebrate.

“It started to shift post-2020 and there are a lot of off-the-field things that are happening,” she said.

“You never want to take anything for granted. You put on that jersey and you want to give it everything you have for the people who came before you, the people who are going to come after you and I am just not seeing that passion.

“I am seeing a very lacklustre, uninspiring, taking it for granted. Winning and training and doing all that you can to be the best possible individual player is not happening.”

Lloyd, who led her team to World Cup titles in 2015 and 2019 and won Olympic gold in 2008 and 2012, said her former team is walking a “fine line” right now.

“We saw before the game, the dancing. There’s a difference between confidence and arrogance, and I think that’s a fine line of where is the direction going with that,” she said.

“It’s OK to be confident, but you never want to cross that line of becoming arrogant and this is exactly what can come and bite you.”

Former Matildas star Catherine Cannuli responded to the vision of Rodman and O’Hara’s antics on the post-game show on Optus Sport, cheekily saying: “Typical USA arrogance. Coming off that pitch, finishing second in the group and still think they’ve got it all”.

Head coach Vlatko Andonovski had a different view on his team’s competitive level in his post-game comments.

“This team wanted to win this game more than anything else and they’ve put everything they could in preparation for this tournament,” Andonovski said in response to Lloyd.

“To question the mentality of this team, to question the willingness to win, to compete … I think it’s insane. I’ve never seen this team step on the field and not try hard and not compete.”

Regardless, it’s the USA’s worst ever performance in a World Cup group stage and just the second time the side has not topped its group.

USA 2019 World Cup winner and forward Jessica McDonald said the champion side were a shadow of their regular selves.

“As far as performance, I did expect more from them, I’m sure a lot of us do, and they’ve been outperformed,” she said.

“I know they’re walking on eggshells right now. It has not been to their standard so far.”

McDonald said she “felt sick” when Capeta’s shot beat US goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher but slammed into the post and then bounced straight back out.

There’s good news for the Matildas however with the side now not able to come up against the defending world champs until the final, if they both make it that far.

‘Peace and gratitude’: US football great Megan Rapinoe to retire after World Cup

United States women’s team star Megan Rapinoe announced on social media on Saturday that she would be retiring from football at the end of this season.

“It is with a deep sense of peace & gratitude that I have decided this will be my final season playing this beautiful game,” the 38-year-old posted.

“I never could have imagined the ways in which soccer would shape and change my life forever,” she added.

The two-time World Cup winner, well known for her activism, is part of the USA squad for the upcoming women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, her fourth appearance at the tournament.

Rapinoe plays in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) for Seattle based OL Reign — their season concludes in November.

The winger currently has 199 caps over a span of 17 years playing for her country and also won an Olympic gold medal in London in 2012.

She was awarded the Best FIFA Women’s Player in 2019 but her fame came as much for her espousal of causes and her campaigning as for her skills on the field.

Rapinoe publicly came out as gay in July 2012 and has been a high-profile campaigner on social issues including LGBTQ+ rights, racial inequality and gender and pay equality.

She was a leading voice in the US women’s team’s successful fight for equal pay and conditions which resulted in a law suit and eventual new collective agreement being struck in 2021.

Rapinoe made headlines in 2016 when she took a knee during the national anthem in solidarity with NFL player Colin Kaepernick.

“I’ve been able to have such an incredible career, and this game has brought me all over the world and allowed me to meet so many amazing people,” said Rapinoe.

“I feel incredibly grateful to have played as long as I have, to be as successful as we’ve been, and to have been a part of a generation of players who undoubtedly left the game better than they found it.”

“To be able to play one last World Cup and one last NWSL season and go out on my own terms is incredibly special,” she added.

Last July she received the highest civilian honour in the United States when President Joe Biden awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Rapinoe was the first footballer to receive the award and one of just six female athletes or coaches.

“Beyond the World Cup title to Olympic medals, Megan is a champion for essential American truth that everyone is entitled to be treated with dignity and respect,” Biden said at the award ceremony.

“She helped lead the change for perhaps the most important victory for anyone on our soccer team or any soccer team: equal pay for women.”

US women’s team coach Vlatko Andonovski said Rapinoe remained an important part of the team for the World Cup which starts on July 20.

“Megan Rapinoe is one of the most important players in women’s soccer history and a personality like no other,” he said.

“She has produced so many memorable moments for her team and the fans on the field that will be remembered for a very long time, but her impact on people as a human being may be even more important.

“It’s been a wonderful experience to coach her in the NWSL and for the national team and I’m looking forward to her being an important part of our team at the World Cup.”

The Californian has spent most of her career playing in domestic leagues but had a brief spell in Australia with W-League team Sydney FC in 2011 and two years later played for French club Lyon, reaching the final of the Champions League.

At the 2019 World Cup in France, she scored in the 2-0 win over the Netherlands in the final and was named Player of the Match. She won the Golden Boot as top scorer and Golden Ball for best player in the tournament.

“Megan is a generational talent,” US women’s national team general manager and former Rapinoe teammate Kate Markgraf said.

“When you talk about players performing on the biggest stages, she’s right up there with the best to ever do it.

“Her contributions off the field are the epitome of someone who saw that she had a large platform and used it for good.”

  • Your move, Matildas! PM drops big public holiday hint ahead of Aussies’ World Cup campaign

Your move, Matildas! PM drops big public holiday hint ahead of Aussies’ World Cup campaign

Anthony Albanese has all but ensured there will be a public holiday if our mighty Matildas win the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which starts next month.

Responding to questions from The Daily Aus about the chances of a public holiday, the Prime Minister made a bold prediction that state and territory leaders will “race to declare” a day off if our women’s football team bring home the silverware.

“It’s up to each state and territory to designate public holidays,” Mr Albanese said on Wednesday.

“But rest assured – should the Matildas win the World Cup on home soil I reckon there will be a race by Premiers to declare a public holiday.”

Chatter broke out over The Daily Aus’ Instagram post, with many users getting on board with the idea and some boldly tagging their Premiers’ accounts in the comment section.

Some said the “YUGE” declaration was “just another incentive” for the Matildas to win the tournament.

“@matildas have more of a chance of winning, too, let’s face it,” one added.

“Give us a public holiday!” another wrote.

“Let’s piss the King’s birthday off and have a Sam Kerr day!”

There were some opponents, with some users saying there were already “too many” public holidays for workers to cope with, and others saying there were more important milestones or groups to give a commemorative day to.

Even the Matildas’ official account got in on the action, replying with a handshake emoji and one confident word: “Bet”.

The Prime Minister seems to be giving himself and his national cabinet a headstart on considering a day off, after similar calls were made when the Socceroos’ historic World Cup run last year.

There was a chorus of calls for a special public holiday to commemorate the men’s football team progressing to the Round of 16 in the 2022 tournament – a feat we hadn’t pulled off since 2006 – after defeating Denmark in a 1-0 thriller.

Even coach Graham Arnold got in on the action, asking in a post-match interview whether he needed to “ask Anthony Albanese again to give the people a day off to celebrate” the victory, and to nurse “some hangovers”.

Despite the massive wave of support for a national holiday, Mr Albanese said at the time there was not enough time to organise a day off; but even while shutting a ‘Socceroos Day’ down, he teased the potential for another football-themed holiday.

“Too late to call a national holiday after the @Socceroos huge win against Denmark last night,” he wrote on Twitter

“But if we win the #FIFAWorldCup … that might be a different story.”

It would not be the first time a national leader declared a public holiday to celebrate a sport’s team historic success on the world stage.

In fact, last year, Saudi Arabia’s King Salman granted his citizens a public holiday after the national team’s shock 2-1 upset over eventual-winners Argentina at the World Cup.

Before that, Saudi Arabia had won only three World Cup matches in its history – a track record that exactly mirrors the Socceroos own World Cup fortunes.

The Matildas have never failed to qualify for each of the last seven Women’s World Cups, but have never won the tournament or made it past the quarter-finals on three occasions.

And there is local precedent for a snap public holiday, thanks to Labor legend Bob Hawke – who Mr Albanese cites as a personal hero.

Mr Hawke famously announced a national holiday after Australia’s legendary America’s Cup victory in 1983, declaring the immortal words: “Any boss who sacks anyone for not turning up today is a bum!”

I think Bob would approve. Picture: YouTubeSource: YouTube

It remains to be seen whether any current Labor leader would have their own zinger in-store in the event of a Matildas World Cup sweep.

But with all mainland states and territories led by Labor governments, it makes sense the leaders would attempt to emulate one of the most memorable moves of the party’s most popular leader in its history.

Albo has basically set up a free kick for them; now it’s up to the states and territories to bend this ball to the back of the net.

News.com.au has approached the state and territory leaders’ offices for comment.

  • Rale Rasic, the first coach to take Australia to World Cup in 1974, dies

Rale Rasic, the first coach to take Australia to World Cup in 1974, dies

Former Socceroos coach Rale Rasic has been lauded as a “giant” of the game after the football pioneer passed away aged 87.

The Bosnian-born Rasic was the first coach to take Australia to the World Cup finals, in Germany in 1974.

Current Socceroos coach Graham Arnold said it was devastating to lose someone who “changed the game” in Australia.

“Rale changed the game in Australia in 1974, qualifying Australia for the first World Cup ever,” Arnold said.

“The amount of passion and love that Rale had for football has never drifted too far away from myself and he has been a great inspiration for me over the years.

“He was such a great man, he loved a chat, and loved a story, and he always kept those stories going and that motivated a lot of people in life.

“I never had the privilege of playing underneath him, but I have no doubt there are a lot of guys that played under him that would be devastated today to hear this news.”

In memory of Rasic, the Socceroos will wear black armbands during their upcoming friendly against World Cup champions Argentina in Beijing, China.

A Sport Australia Hall of Fame member, Rasic is regarded as one of Australia’s most influential football identities.

A former player in Yugoslavia, he arrived in Australia in 1962 without any connections to Australia’s football community and was appointed national coach in 1970, aged just 26.

At the 1974 World Cup, Rasic was in charge as the Socceroos were beaten by East Germany 2-0, lost to eventual champions West Germany 3-0 and then drew 0-0 with Chile.

He was dumped as coach after the tournament but his coaching career included stints at Melbourne Hungaria, St George, Marconi Stallions, Pan Hellenic, Adelaide City, Blacktown City, South Melbourne, APIA Leichhardt, Canterbury-Marrickville, Rockdale Ilinden, Fairfield Bulls and Canberra Cosmos.

Football Australia chairman, Chris Nikou, called Rasic “a giant” of the game in Australia.

“His dedication to representing Australia and his remarkable achievements as a player, coach, and administrator will forever be etched in our nation‘s football history,” Nikou said.

“Rale’s influence extended beyond the game, shaping the careers of numerous players, and leaving an indelible mark on the sport he loved.”

Socceroos great Robbie Slater tweeted: “Rale Rasic forever a legend and a lovely man! RIP.”

Sport Australia chief executive officer Adrianne Sarkozy said Rasic was the “epitome” of the organisation’s Hall of Fame’s “vision”.

“He conducted himself with integrity, generosity, modesty and most of all, pride,” Sarkozy said.

“He wore his Sport Australia Hall of Fame Member medal with the upmost pride, and we couldn’t be prouder to have him part of our family.”
