‘Fanatical about winning’: Man Utd close in on target dubbed the next ‘special one’

Twenty years ago it was Jose Mourinho. Now it is Ruben Amorim who appears set to move from Portugal to the Premier League with a reputation as Europe’s next coaching superstar.

Amorim has emerged as the favourite to take over at Manchester United following Erik ten Hag’s sacking. His club Sporting Lisbon have confirmed the English club’s interest, and that they have entered negotiations.

Sporting have confirmed that United will pay the €10 million release clause in Amorium’s contract to allow him to leave. It is expected that a United delegation will travel to Lisbon to close the deal after Sporting’s Portuguese cup quarter-final at home to Nacional on Tuesday evening.

Amorim is 39, two years younger than Mourinho when he left Porto and took over a Chelsea side poised to dominate English football.

Other coaches have come from Portugal with huge reputations, but not all have succeeded. Andre Villas-Boas, for example, failed to live up to expectations after following Mourinho’s path from Porto to Chelsea in 2011.

But everything about Amorim — who was also linked to the manager’s job at Liverpool this year — suggests he could be something special, just as Mourinho famously claimed he himself was in 2004.

As long ago as 2017 when Amorim confirmed his intention to become a coach, he told Tribuna Expresso: “I don’t know if I am going to be good or bad, but that is what I am going to be.”

He had just quit playing aged 32 after injuries blighted a fine career. Amorim has made his name as a coach at Sporting, but he starred as a player for their Lisbon rivals Benfica, the club he has supported from birth.

“I can see myself coaching Benfica, or one of the world’s biggest clubs. Obviously only time will tell and you need so much luck,” he said.

    City star Rodri claims 2024 Ballon d’Or | 00:50

Amorim began playing at Belenenses from the Lisbon suburb Belem best known for its custard tarts.

He worked under Jorge Jesus there, reaching the Portuguese Cup final in 2007. In 2008 he joined Benfica, and a year later he was reunited with Jesus. Amorim mainly played at right-back as a team featuring David Luiz and Angel Di Maria romped to the title.

The following season, Benfica were overtaken by Villas-Boas’s Porto and Amorim struggled with a knee injury.

He needed a loan move at Braga to relaunch his career, and went back to Benfica, and Jesus, in 2013/14.

Playing regularly in midfield, Amorim starred as they won a domestic treble and lost the Europa League final on penalties to Sevilla.

His career never reached such highs again, and he ended his playing days in Qatar.

Amorim has described Mourinho, who managed United from 2016 to 2018, as his reference, but he admits Jesus — now guiding Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia — marked him more than any other coach after he spent seven years under his stewardship.

“It is funny, because as a player I had lots of problems with Jesus, albeit other players did too, because Jesus is a coach who wears you out,” Amorim recalled.

“He is a real perfectionist. I worked with him for a long time and it is obvious that what I demand of players is quite similar to him.”

Amorim, who appeared for Portugal at two World Cups, began coaching in 2018 when just 33, at Lisbon club Casa Pia, and his rise since has been vertiginous.

He won the third-tier title there, but didn’t yet have the necessary coaching qualifications and left in early 2019.

Amorim really began his steep ascent upon joining Braga, managing their B team before being handed the first-team reins in December 2019.

He did so well that Sporting swooped, paying his 10-million-euro release clause. Sporting had not won the Portuguese title since 2002 and their supporters had some concerns about his Benfica past.

“I am a professional and I am fanatical about winning. I know how big this club is. I played against them. I am not hiding my past,” he said at his unveiling.

In his first full season Sporting won the title, losing just one game. Amorim, who favours an intense pressing game, then took Sporting to the Champions League last 16.

He won a second Portuguese title last season and players such as English forward Marcus Edwards and Swede Viktor Gyokeres have flourished under him.

Clear favourite that rival snubbed; big fish free for bombshell move: Man Utd contenders

Manchester United are chasing Ruben Amorim, the coach of Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon, to be their new manager, according to multiple reports.

The Red Devils sacked Erik ten Hag on Monday and former United goal-scoring machine Ruud van Nistelrooy will step in as interim manager, but they have quickly turned their attention to 39-year-old Amorim.

The Portuguese manager is highly touted as he is considered one of Europe’s best young coaches, and Sky Sports, The Sun, the Daily Mail and the Athletic have all reported that he is close to agreeing a deal to take charge at Old Trafford.

Amorim was linked to replacing Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, but Dutchman Arne Slot was chosen instead.

During the off-season, he also spoke to West Ham about replacing David Moyes but remained at Sporting after he saying it was a “mistake” to meet with East London club.

Ten Hag blows up after VAR decision | 00:59

At only 36 years of age, he led the Lisbon-based club to their first league title in almost two decades before adding a second to his resume last season.

Amorim’s reputation has been built off developing young players as well as inspiring more experienced players to produce career-best seasons under him.

As a player, the former midfielder represented Portugal and won three Portuguese league titles with Benfica.

Several other names have been flagged to replace ten Hag, however.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank was being reported as one of the favourites to take over on Monday.

The Danish manager has the Bees sitting in ninth place on the Premier League table, two points above United, at present.

Frank has made the best of the limited resources available to him – compared to big six clubs like United – during his six years at Brentford which included guiding them to the Premier League for the first time in 2021.

Former England boss Gareth Southgate has often been linked with United since stepping down from the national side in July.

Southgate led the Three Lions to back-to-back finals in the Euros and he is reportedly strongly admired by Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

A return to management of club football would be a significant shift for Southgate however as he has not been a part of the weekly grind since he was in charge of Middlesborough from 2006 to 2009.

Although, he has worked closely with United’s England representatives Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford.

Former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter as well as Barcelona great Xavi have also been linked to United.

Potter was praised for Brighton’s attractive style of play during his time on England’s south coast, while Xavi departed the club where he was a legendary player at the end of last season because of disagreements with club hierarchy.

The former midfielder led Barcelona to a La Liga title in 2022/23 despite their financial restrictions.

Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi has also been named as a potential option at Old Trafford after he led Inter to the Champions League final as well as the Series A title.

The 48-year-old has reportedly long desired managing in the Premier League as he has been working hard to improve his English.

‘Team to fear’: PL giant fires stunning CL statement as Euro powerhouse ‘taught lesson’ – Wrap

Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka inspired Arsenal’s 2-0 success against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday as the Gunners secured their first win in the Champions League this season.

Havertz headed Arsenal into the lead and Saka netted before the interval to underline their superiority at the Emirates Stadium.

After drawing their opening league phase tie at Atalanta, Mikel Arteta’s side moved onto four points in their bid to reach the knockout stage of the revamped tournament.

Premier League legend Frank Lampard said Arsenal had “taught a bit of a lesson” to PSG, who were weaker and less aggressive both on and off the ball.

Meanwhile, Oliver Holt wrote in the Daily Mail that the win announces Arsenal as one of the favourites to win the competition.

“Arsenal were not at their best but they did not have to be. PSG may not be favourites to win the Champions League but they are counted among the contenders and Arsenal made beating them look relatively routine,” he wrote.

“They deserve to be among the favourites. With City and Real Madrid, they, not PSG, look like a team to fear.”

Man City cruise to victory in Slovakia | 01:03

Eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals last season and pipped to the English title by Manchester City, the Gunners are now unbeaten in nine games in all competitions this term as they chase silverware on both fronts.

There was further good news for Arsenal as Spain midfielder Mikel Merino made his long-awaited debut for the last 30 minutes.

Merino’s recovery from a shoulder injury suffered in his first training session following his close-season move from Real Sociedad was a welcome boost for Arteta with Martin Odegaard currently sidelined.

Gianluigi Donnarumma was back in goal for PSG after missing the last three games with a thigh injury and the Italian had an early test of his fitness as he sprinted off his line to save at Gabriel Martinelli’s feet.

Saka, captaining Arsenal for the night, quickly switched the momentum in the hosts’ favour when he cut in from the right flank to curl just over from the edge of the area.

Havertz rewarded Arsenal’s relentless pressure with the opener in the 20th minute.

Leandro Trossard curled a pinpoint cross into the six-yard box and Havertz made a perfectly-timed run behind the visitors’ flat-footed defence to bravely head past the advancing Donnarumma.

The Germany forward, who scored Chelsea’s Champions League final winner in 2021, endured a difficult start with Arsenal after moving across London for £65 million ($86 million) last year.

But since the start of February, only three Premier League players have more combined goals and assists in all competitions than Havertz’s tally of 21 as he banishes the ‘waste of money’ jibes.

    – COMPOSED ARSENAL –

PSG’s cause wasn’t helped by the absence of France winger Ousmane Dembele, who was left out after the 2018 World Cup winner’s reported clash with boss Luis Enrique when he was substituted in their win over Rennes on Friday.

Dembele is PSG’s most potent attacking force following Kylian Mbappe’s move to Real Madrid.

Nuno Mendes tried to provide an attacking spark for the spluttering visitors as the defender’s blast from 18 yards smashed off the post and bounced to safety.

But Arsenal were always in control and Saka doubled their advantage in the 35th minute.

Under the guidance of their set-piece guru Nicolas Jover, Arsenal have become lethal from free-kicks and corners, while PSG are notoriously deficient in that area.

So it was little surprise that Arteta’s team were able to capitalise on their dead-ball expertise yet again.

Whipping an in swinging free-kick towards Donnarumma’s goal, the England forward expected a teammate to get a touch on his delivery.

Instead, there was enough swerve on the ball that it eluded a gaggle of players and caught the slow-to-react Donnarumma unsighted as it flashed into the net.

Only Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane and Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior have been involved in more Champions League goals than Saka since the start of last season.

Trossard shot just wide before halftime as PSG’s creaky defence looked more League One than Ligue 1.

Donnarumma made a fine save to keep out Martinelli’s volley soon after the interval, but PSG were inches away from grabbing a lifeline when Joao Neves’ effort smacked off the bar.

LEWANDOWSKI HITS BRACE AS BARCA CRUSH YOUNG BOYS

Robert Lewandowski struck twice for Barcelona as they demolished Young Boys 5-0 in a one-sided Champions League clash on Tuesday.

The Catalan giants, five-time winners, made amends for their defeat by Monaco in their first match by thumping their Swiss visitors.

Raphinha and Inigo Martinez strikes as well as an own goal helped Hansi Flick’s side secure a sizeable victory and boost their goal difference significantly.

“We knew after the game against Monaco in the Champions League we had to give a quick reply in the next game, which was this one, and we did that well,” Raphinha told Movistar.

“A couple of days ago we lost a game in La Liga too (at Osasuna) and we had to give a quick response, and we did that.

“It’s much easier playing here at home because of the joy (the fans) give us.” Raphinha said with the expanded Champions League format and one table for all the teams, it was useful to build a good goal difference.

“It’s important to score so many goals because at the end of the eight games, it will be handy,” he added.

Barca coach Flick rolled out arguably his strongest available team after the loss at Monaco, despite the Swiss side’s struggles.

Young Boys are in the relegation zone of their domestic league with just one win in eight games and were thrashed at home by Aston Villa on their European debut this season.

It took Barcelona just eight minutes to move ahead, with Lewandowski applying a poacher’s finish to Raphinha’s cross-shot.

Jules Kounde hammered over and Ferran Torres had a shot saved as Barcelona dominated, but Young Boys carved out a first opening after 30 minutes when Ebrima Colley pulled an effort wide.

Raphinha, enjoying a strong start to the campaign, doubled Barcelona’s lead from close range after Pedri’s shot was blocked but the ball ricocheted to his feet.

Centre-back Martinez headed home Barca’s third from Pedri’s free-kick shortly afterwards as the Catalans overran their ragged visitors.

    – Barca romp –

Torres wasted a fine chance for the fourth when he fired straight at Young Boys goalkeeper Marvin Keller when well placed to score.

Lewandowski netted his second with a close-range header after Martinez had nodded Lamine Yamal’s corner back across the face of goal as Barcelona began the second half just how they finished the first.

It was the 36-year-old’s ninth goal in 10 games this season as he enjoys a revival under his former Bayern Munich coach Flick.

Young Boys winger Joel Monteiro struck the crossbar but that was as close as the visitors came to joy in Catalonia.

Barcelona fans were pleased to see Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong come on as a substitute for his first appearance since an ankle injury in April as the game petered towards a close.

Mohamed Camara deflected Alejandro Balde’s cross into his own goal for Barcelona’s fifth in the 81st minute.

Home supporters chanted the name of former Barca midfield icon Andres Iniesta, after reports the Spanish 2010 World Cup winner will announce his retirement next week.

Monteiro had a late goal ruled out for off-side and Inaki Pena made a smart save at his near post late on, with Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny watching on from the presidential box.

Barcelona are poised to sign the former Juventus and Arsenal stopper to replace the injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

    BORUSSIA DORTMUND ROUT CELTIC

Karim Adeyemi scored three goals in the first half as Borussia Dortmund handed Celtic a brutal Champions League reality check, winning 7-1 at home on Tuesday.

Celtic came into the match having won eight from eight in Scotland and Europe this season, but were blown off the park in Germany, Dortmund leading 5-1 at halftime.

Dortmund added two goals in the second half to equal their biggest ever win in the Champions League.

What are Arsenal’s Champions League fixtures this season? Full match schedule

Arsenal’s 2024/25 Champions League campaign is underway, with the Gunners looking to make it further in Europe than last season.

Mikel Arteta‘s men started away against Atalanta and played out a goalless draw, and they now face Paris Saint-Germain, live on talkSPORT tonight.

Last year, Arsenal reached the last eight but were knocked out by Bayern Munich.

This time, they’ll be aiming for the semi-finals at a minimum, but first, they must overcome plenty of tricky opponents to qualify as one of the eight best teams.

The Champions League has expanded, and the format has changed this year.

Gone are the days of groups of four, with each team now in the same league, and only the top eight sides after eight matches will automatically qualify for the last 16.

The teams who finish 9th to 24th will all compete in a two-legged play-off, and sides that finish 25th or lower are eliminated, with no access to the Europa League anymore.

So, the Gunners will have their sights set on ensuring they avoid the lottery of the play-offs.

What are Arsenal’s Champions League fixtures?

With a new format, the draw changed as well.

Each team plays eight games, with four at home and four away, but rather than playing the same team twice, it’s a new side for each home and away encounter.

The Champions League teams were divided into pots based on their UEFA coefficient ranking, putting Arsenal in Pot 2.

From there, the Gunners were drawn to play against two teams from Pots 1, 2, 3 and 4.

So, they are set to play a variety of sides, with one team from each pot at home and away.

From Pot 1, Arsenal have been drawn against Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan.

The French giants visit north London on Tuesday, October 1, while the Gunners face a daunting trip to the San Siro on Wednesday, November 6.

In Pot 2, they’ve already played Atalanta and will then play Shakhtar Donetsk at the Emirates on Tuesday, October 22.

Jamie O’Hara Believes Tottenham Showed Arsenal How To Win With 10 Men After Winning 3-0 Vs Qarabağ FK

That means by the time the Gunners play their fifth Champions League game, they would have faced all of their Pot 1 and Pot 2 opponents.

So, if they take a good number of points from those games, they should be in a strong place to take a top-eight spot.

From Pot 3, Arsenal travel to Portugal to play Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday, November 26.

Dinamo Zagreb are then the Gunners’ final home game on Wednesday, January 22.

And in Pot 4, Arsenal head to Monaco on Wednesday, December 11 before their group campaign concludes with a visit to Spain and a match against Girona on Wednesday, January 29.

If they don’t finish in the top eight, they will have to take part in a two-legged play-off to reach the last 16.

Arsenal target explains why switch didn’t happen – but opens door to future move

Viktor Gyokeres has suggested he was priced out of a summer move by Sporting Lisbon amid reported interest from Arsenal.

The Swedish striker was heavily linked with a switch to the Emirates following his incredible goalscoring exploits in the 2023/24 season.

    2

Gyokeres has remained coy on the prospect of departing Sporting in 2025Credit: Getty

He banged in 43 goals and provided 15 assists in 50 games in all competitions to fire Sporting to the Portuguese league title.

It has been widely speculated that the Gunners are huge admirers of the 26-year-old, who scored 21 Championship goals for Coventry in the 2022/23 campaign.

But Arsenal failed to formalise their interest in the ex-Brighton centre-forward, with Mikel Arteta deciding against bringing in a striker during the summer window.

And with the player boasting a release clause worth £85million, Gyokeres believes the huge sum of money put off potential suitors.

He told Sport Bladet: “They (Sporting) wanted most of the starting players to stay and held us tight.

“That’s how it turned out, but I enjoy Sporting very much, so for me it was no problem to stay.”

Gyokeres then refused to rule out a move away from Sporting in 2025 as he remained coy over his future.

He added: “Of course. You want to play at the highest level.

“It (his £85m release clause) was probably a bit too much because nothing came of it. Of course it’s a lot of money. But we’ll see what happens next window.

“Nothing happened and it feels like I had a pretty good season. So yes, that’s probably why there was simply no move.

“But that’s what Sporting thinks I’m worth, and then you have to respect that.

“I enjoy myself very much in Sporting and can’t complain about anything, so it’s absolutely no problem for me to stay.

“Of course, you aim to test other leagues and a higher level, but I have no stress.”

Former Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson says Mikel Arteta has aura like Thierry Henry that can’t be taught

As if there was ever any doubt, Gyokeres has started the new season in blistering fashion – chipping in with seven goals and three assists in five club matches.

He has found the back of the net in each of the opening four top-flight matches.

And he even fired in against Azerbaijan for Sweden in their 3-0 Nations League victory on Thursday night.

If he continues his remarkable form, you wouldn’t put it past a European giant of looking to snap him up when the market reopens in January.

  • Huge twist in Liverpool coaching search as new favourite emerges

Huge twist in Liverpool coaching search as new favourite emerges

Feyenoord coach Arne Slot has emerged as the leading contender to succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager, according to British media reports on Monday.

Slot, 45, led Feyenoord to their first league title in six years last season and won the Dutch Cup on Sunday.

He had been a front runner to take over at Tottenham a year ago before ruling himself out of contention.

Sky Sports, the BBC and The Times all reported that Slot is now leading the race for the unenviable task of following Klopp at Anfield.

However, the Reds could face competition from Bayern Munich and Barcelona, who are also looking for new coaches next season.

Bayer Leverkusen boss and former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso had been the favourite when Klopp announced his decision in January to stand down at the end of the season after nearly nine years in the role.

However, Alonso has committed to staying at Leverkusen after leading them to a first-ever Bundesliga title.

Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim was also linked with the Liverpool vacancy but reportedly held talks with West Ham on Monday about replacing David Moyes next season.

Slot moved to Feyenoord in 2021 after impressing in his first managerial role at AZ Alkmaar.

He led the Dutch giants to the inaugural Europa Conference League final at the end of his first season, in which they narrowly lost 1-0 to Jose Mourinho’s Roma.

Slot then delivered just a second league title in 24 years to De Kuip last season, but his side trail PSV Eindhoven by nine points with only four games remaining in this year’s Eredivisie title race.

The Times said his track record of improving players and a high-octane playing style, not dissimilar to Klopp’s, is what is attracting the Liverpool hierarchy.

Klopp has just five games left of a reign that has transformed Liverpool’s fortunes after decades in the doldrums and could yet go out on the high by winning the Premier League.

Amorim denies Liverpool talks but still frontrunner to succeed Klopp at Anfield

Ruben Amorim has denied claims he has spoken to Liverpool about succeeding Jurgen Klopp as their next manager.

However, he remains the frontrunner for the Anfield job, with the Portuguese coach expected to depart his current position at Sporting Lisbon at the end of the season.

talkSPORT brought you news earlier this week that Liverpool had met with representatives of Amorim to take Klopp’s place at the helm of the Merseyside giants.

However, there has been no direct contact with the man himself and, as reported on Tuesday, while a meeting with representatives has taken place there is no agreement between the parties.

And the highly-rated young coach was keen to point this out when quizzed on his future by journalists on Thursday, with the 39-year-old insisting he is fully committed to his job at Sporting as his side targets league glory.

“This is the last time I will talk about my future,” said Amorim, whose Sporting team sits top of the Liga Portugal table, four points clear of rivals Benfica and with a game in hand.

    Read more on Ruben Amorim

“There was no interview, much less of an agreement [with Liverpool]. The only thing we want, all of us here, is to be champions with Sporting and nothing will change.

“I’ll say it again: I’m Sporting’s coach. There was no interview with any club, no agreement with any club, I am focused, as always, on defending my club.

“And since I really have nothing to say, there will be no interviews or agreements with the Sporting coach. The matter is resolved, whether for his club or another.”

It’s a robust statement from the Amorim, but it’s not as big a blow to Liverpool as it seems.

While it appears it’s another coach to scratch off the list following Xabi Alonso’s decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, talkSPORT understands he is still favourite to take over at Liverpool.

Chiefs at the Merseyside club are planning to conduct a thorough search for Klopp’s successor and will follow a rigid process that will cover all bases, rather than just go all-in for one name.

Simon Jordan expects Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to follow Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp footsteps and leave the Premier League in the near future

Liverpool are yet to have held formal interviews with any of their candidates, with Amorim – who is a fluent English speaker – expected to be one of many coaches considered by the Premier League giants.

Alonso was one of those names, too, before he committed his future to Leverkusen and announced he was staying with the German club, who are set to be crowned Bundesliga champions for the first time.

    Amorim didn’t do that.

According to talkSPORT football correspondent Ben Jacobs, his comments on Thursday are instead perhaps proof of the step-by-step process Liverpool are taking in their search, and merely that they haven’t yet formally spoken to him.

It is understood Liverpool are due to begin more formal talks with their targets in April.

Meanwhile, Amorim is still expected to leave Sporting at the end of the season, whether he wins the title or not, despite not wanting to be drawn on his future on Thursday.

It is believed he has already made the decision and is waiting to announce his exit until after the final game of the season, by then Sporting may already be confirmed as champions for the second time in his tenure.

Amorim was only in his second season in charge when he led Sporting to their first league title in 19 years in the 2020/21 campaign. He was just 36 at the time.

That came after a rapid rise at Braga, where he was promoted to manage the senior team after just three months coaching their reserves.

Then, three months into his first senior coaching role, he was snapped up by one of Portugal’s big-three clubs and was made the new manager of Sporting.

Since his appointment in March 2020, Amorim has won 152 of his 215 games in charge, with his team scoring a stunning 456 goals.

As a player, Amorim spent the majority of his career in his homeland where he lifted ten major trophies, including three league titles with Benfica, while he also represented Portugal at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

“My number two is Carlos Fernandes, he’s been my right-hand man right from day one. He’ll be a much better coach than me. I often say if I become Bobby Robson, then he’ll be my [Jose] Mourinho.”

It was just a passing comment, but few quotes better sum up the latest managerial superstar produced in Portugal, Liverpool-linked Ruben Amorim.

talkSPORT understands that Liverpool have held talks with Amorim’s representatives over replacing Jurgen Klopp.

He’s made it clear he wants to take over from the German at Anfield after an incredible time in Lisbon.

Amorim’s ascent has been as sharp as fathombly possible; appointed as Braga reserve boss in September 2019, it was just four months before the former Portugal midfielder was given the first team job, and began with a 7-1 destruction of Belenenses.

Soon, ten wins and a draw followed in all domestic competitions, winning the League Cup final and racking up wins against all of ‘Os Tres Grandes’ – the big three.

One of them had seen enough, with Sporting CP handing Amorim a contract featuring a £13million release clause, by far the biggest in the history of Portuguese football, just four months into his professional career.

Incredibly though, that clause soon looked cheap, with Amorim guiding the faltering giants to their first league title in 19 years, ending a curse and cementing legendary status in his home country.

Turning out for Lisbon rivals Benfica over 150 times as a player, Amorim even featured alongside Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal at two World Cups.

The 39-year-old is clearly destined for greatness, which has led to him being labelled ‘the next Mourinho’, but in reality, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Every imaginable criticism of Mourinho over the years, Amorim is the antithesis of.

Mourinho doesn’t like youth; Amorim won the title with teenagers dotted all over the pitch, turning debutants into superstars in mere weeks.

Mourinho is arrogant; Amorim always takes the blame for defeats and ensures that his players are given credit for wins.

Upon winning Sporting’s historic title, he even made sure his staff were present for the press conference, sharing the plaudits for such an incredible victory that was mostly down to him.

Earmarked by some as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor at Real Madrid, Amorim was mooted to be in the running for vacancies at both Manchester United and Chelsea.

Asked about the United reports before the Red Devils appointed Erik ten Hag, his answer was as anti-Mourinho as ever.

“These are just rumours,” Amorim said. “I don’t attach any importance to it. I think Manchester United should contact [Ajax manager] Erik ten Hag, and right away!”

The only real similarity between Mourinho and Amorim is their nationality.

But should Liverpool go for Amorim, it’s possible the Portuguese manager could have a similar impact as Mourinho managed in his first campaign in England.

Certainly, we are looking at someone who is heading to the top.

Liverpool told what Nagelsmann and Amorim could bring with Alonso off limits

Liverpool fans have been given an insight into the tactics both Julian Nagelsmann and Ruben Amorim could bring to the club.

The Reds are on the lookout for a new manager after Jurgen Klopp shocked the football world in January by announcing he will leave the club in the summer.

Xabi Alonso had been the firm favourite to take the reins on Merseyside, but he confirmed he will remain at Bayer Leverkusen for at least one more season.

Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim is now a rumoured target for the Liverpool hierarchy.

Though Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi and Germany manager Nagelsmann are also in the running for the job.

talkSPORT’s European football expert Kevin Hatchard has given fans an understanding of what both Nagelsmann and Amorim could bring to the Reds.

Speaking on Trans Europe Express, Hatchard said: “I think Xabi Alonso was going to be one of several and may well have been the leading candidate.

“They were keen on him, but Julian Nagelsmann is a name I thought was appropriate when Jurgen Klopp first announced he was going to leave.

“I was asked about Nagelsmann up against Xabi Alonso, and I felt at the time, to an extent I still do, that if you’re talking about track records, if you’re taking about what they have done as coaches, Nagelsmann is there.

“He is the man who has been a coach since he was 28 at the top level, and a very good youth coach before that.

“And he is also somebody who got RB Leipzig to the semi-finals of the Champions League and won trophies at Bayern Munich.

“He knows how to deal with high-pressure environments, and I think he learned from what was a very bruising situation at Bayern.

“I felt he was jettisoned far too easily and very unfairly, though he knows the political game.

Hatchard also spoke of Sporting boss Amorim, delivering high praise the way of the Lisbon-born tactician.

“I can understand why Amorim is being linked with the job because he plays very aggressive football, and football which relies on good work without the ball.

“They do press high, so there are some parallels there, but nobody is going to be a direct replacement for [Jurgen] Klopp.

“Either in terms of the charisma of the man, but also the style, it is a very hard style to copy and replicate, and I don’t think the new coach should try to do that.

“So, Amorim has done really well with Sporting, winning the title and pushing for it again, and he also knocked Arsenal out of Europe last season.

“He has also got Sporting to the knockout stage of the Champions League before, so this is a guy who has a good CV and is understandably one people are excited about.”

Ex-Reds great makes shock Liverpool call as new frontrunner emerges amid $24m twist

Liverpool’s hopes of luring Xabi Alonso back to Anfield were dashed on Friday with the Spaniard deciding to stay put at Bayer Leverkusen, who he has on course for a first ever Bundesliga title.

A Champions League winner during his time as a player at Liverpool, Alonso had been quickly installed as the favourite to succeed Jurgen Klopp after the German made his shock announcement in January that he will leave at the end of the season.

Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim is the new frontrunner with the bookmakers ahead of Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi and Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann.

Should Liverpool decide Amorim is the man, they’ll have to stump up $AUD24.8 million to trigger his release clause from Sporting.

Alonso’s decision to remain with Leverkusen, who are unbeaten in 38 games in all competitions this season, ends Liverpool’s hopes his arrival would soften the blow of Klopp’s impending departure.

The Reds’ fortunes on and off the field have been transformed during Klopp’s eight-and-a-half years in charge.

Liverpool won their first league title for 30 years in 2020, a year after lifting the Champions League.

Klopp is on course to leave in a blaze of glory.

Liverpool are behind Premier League leaders Arsenal only on goal difference with 10 games to go.

They also lifted the League Cup last month and could yet face Alonso’s Leverkusen in the Europa League final with both sides into the last eight.

Klopp believes he is passing the baton over at a perfect time with a squad packed full of young talent, aided by a core of world class veterans in Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

“For the future it is important how good is the team, how good are the players, how good is the structure and how good is the organisation,” Klopp said earlier this month.

“That’s where my optimism comes from and that’s why I think it’s a rather good moment to be with LFC.”

However, following in the footsteps of a figure with such legendary status may have been one of the factors to discourage Alonso to make the jump.

Reports suggest his snub is set to open the door for Sporting’s Amorim. At just 39, the former Portugal international has already made a name for himself in his homeland.

Amorim’s first job came at Braga in 2019, where he lasted just over two months and 13 games before Sporting paid his 10 million euro ($11 million) release clause to take over at the Lisbon giants.

That faith in his ability was well-rewarded as he delivered a first league title in 19 years in his first season in charge in 2020/21.

Sporting only managed to finish second and fourth for the past two years but are on course for a league and cup double this season.

De Zerbi has the perfect opportunity to make his case and spoil Klopp’s farewell when Brighton visit Anfield on Sunday.

The Italian’s first game in English football was a thrilling 3-3 draw away to Liverpool and Brighton then beat Klopp’s men twice in the Premier League and FA Cup at home least season.

But De Zerbi has struggled to maintain the same standards this season due to the demands of juggling the club’s first ever foray into Europe with the rigours of competing at the top end of the Premier League.

Nagelsmann was once considered the rising star of European coaching himself after impressing at Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig.

An ill-fated spell at Bayern Munich set him back, but he could redeem his reputation with Germany at a home European Championship.

After a difficult start to his time in charge of the national team, friendly victories over France and the Netherlands have given the German public hope of a summer to remember.

However, Nagelsmann’s involvement at the tournament could count against his case for the Anfield hot seat.

Liverpool’s first pre-season friendly against Arsenal comes just over two weeks after the final of the Euros.
