WWE star takes potshot at Spurs as special belts of football clubs are released

Tottenham Hotspur’s ongoing trophy drought was brutally highlighted by WWE superstar Drew McIntyre.

The north London club have regularly been the butt of jokes surrounding their failure to land a major trophy for the first time since 2008.

Ange Postecoglou’s men have one final shot at finally silencing their detractors after booking their place in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday night following a second leg win over AZ Alkmaar.

But for now, they remain an easy target for rival fans as their wait for silverware rumbles on.

Bizarrely, their most recent criticism has come from three-time WWE world champion McIntyre, who himself is an avid football fan.

The Scot has often displayed his affection for boyhood club Rangers and it appears the England vs Scotland rivalry is alive and well.

On Friday, WWE announced that it had released exclusive legacy title belts – priced at £425 – featuring the branding and colours of 13 European football clubs.

The featured teams included Manchester United, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Chelsea, West Ham and Old Firm duo Rangers and Celtic.

Also included were European giants AC Milan, Inter, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.

But it was the inclusion of Tottenham that handed McIntyre too good of an opportunity to miss.

The 39-year-old knows all too well the importance of being an opportunist after claiming the Money in the Bank briefcase in 2024.

McIntyre brutally shared WWE’s post on X with the caption: “That’s the only title Tottenham have seen in years.”

Whilst not technically wrong, the wrestler sparked a huge debate in his comments section with fans either praising him or hitting the star back with some banter of their own.

Ironically, Tottenham could face Rangers in the Europa League final in May to break their trophy hoodoo.

The club’s have already met in this season’s league phase which saw Dejan Kulusevski score late on to earn the Premier League side a 1–1 draw at Ibrox.

With both clubs on opposite ends of the draw, a second meeting can only happen if both sides make it to the final in Bilbao.

Rangers saw off Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce in a tense penalty shootout on Thursday and will face Athletic Bilbao in the quarter-finals.

Last year, McIntyre was given the prestigious honour of being inducted into the Scottish Wrestling of Hall of Fame by Glasgow’s Lord Provost, becoming the first active wrestler to do so.

He was handed the honour prior to WWE’s Clash of the Castle premium live event which took place at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro in June.

“It’s pretty surreal to be the only active wrestler to be inducted into the Scottish Wrestling Hall of Fame,” McIntyre said.

“But it’s even more surreal that it happened in Ibrox and, even more so, on the weekend where I’m wrestling Scotland’s first ever PLE for the World Championship. It’s all my passions as a kid coming together as one.”

  • I played with Gareth Bale but underrated leader was the best I have ever seen

I played with Gareth Bale but underrated leader was the best I have ever seen

Gareth Bale might be the greatest British footballer of all time, but one former Tottenham player is in no doubt about who his best teammate was.

Bale was at Spurs from 2007 to 2013 and became unplayable in his final two seasons in the Premier League before Real Madrid broke the world record transfer fee to sign him for £85million.

    5

There, he won 15 trophies, including five Champions League crowns, playing an integral part in each victory.

Yet it was a teammate at both Spurs and Real that one former colleague rates above anyone he played with.

Recalling his time alongside Bale at White Hart Lane, Sebastien Bassong told talkSPORT: “When we played [Inter] Milan I was playing alongside him and Samuel Eto’o came to me and said, ‘Who’s that guy?’

“I said, ‘You’re about to find out, he’s gonna retire Maicon’, and he put him in a grave.

“He could have played by himself on the left, left-back and left wing. He was an introvert, he didn’t talk much.”

“But…” Bassong continued. “I’ll still go for Luka [Modric].”

Rating the Croatian legend as his greatest-ever teammate, Bassong explained why the six-time Champions League winner was like no other.

“Luka, we called him Mozart, he’s the best one because he won the Ballon d’Or, at Spurs I’d go for Luka – no doubt,” he began, before explaining the 39-year-old’s leadership qualities.

“Luka isn’t a talker, he’s an introvert by nature, but when Luka spoke everyone listened.

“Luka doesn’t get angry, but if he does there’s a reason because he’s so good and efficient. That’s the kind of person you want to follow, when he says something, give the ball to Luka and he’s going to dictate the game.

“One day I had the ball and he came square to me and I didn’t give him the ball because there were two players on his back. He came to me and said, ‘Bass, give me the ball’. I said, ‘Yeah but…’ He said, ‘Just give me the ball!’

“The next time I gave him the ball and he did something amazing, dropped his shoulder and went past two players, out to the right then a Crouchy [Peter Crouch] goal.

“He came back to me and said, ‘What did I tell you, give me the ball!’ I said, ‘Listen boss, from now on I’ll give you the ball!’

“He was a leader, he was the boss, he was a captain and someone you want to follow.”

Modric headed to the Spanish capital a year before Bale in 2012, and created a legacy of one of the game’s greatest ever players.

A World Cup finalist who’s still going strong at 39, Modric received a special tribute after a stunning long-range goal against Girona on February 23.

Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti was asked if Modric will receive a new contract and become the first player to appear for Los Blancos at the age of 40, and replied: “I have another player who won a Champions League at 40, who was [Paulo] Maldini.

“The two can be compared in terms of what a footballer has to have. There is a genetic element, but above all it is the commitment they have.

“That is the only way to reach 40, like Luka will…”

Man United cash boost, Spurs identify Ange replacement, PL coach to Championship

Cash-strapped Manchester United could be set for a much-needed multi-million pound windfall – thanks to former striker Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood has been banging in goals for fun since leaving Man United to join Roberto de Zerbi’s Marseille last summer.

    3

The ex-England international’s hot streak of 14 goals in 22 games for the French outfit has alerted some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including the likes of PSG and Barcelona.

When United traded Greenwood with Marseille for £26.6miliion they insisted on an unusually high 50 per cent sell-on clause.

With the 23-year-old now valued at around £60m, that means United would bank in the region of £16.5m from any sale.

At a time when Sir Jim Ratcliffe is cutting costs to raise vital transfer funds, that money would come in very handy for struggling boss Ruben Amorim.

    Bournemouth stars (and boss) wanted

Bournemouth are braced for a summer battle to keep several of their star men, and manager Andoni Iraola!

The Cherries are enjoying the season of their lifetime and currently sit in fifth place in the Premier League, likely to be enough to secure a spot in the Champions League.

Their incredible rise up the table has not gone unnoticed with centre-back Dean Huijsen, who is believed to have a £50m release clause in his contract, attracting attention from Liverpool and Chelsea.

Left-back Milos Kerkez is another Cherries star on the radar of a number of top clubs, including Manchester United, along with fleet-footed forward Antoine Semenyo, who has admirers at Newcastle.

Then there is miracle-working gaffer Iraola, who talkSPORT understands would be at the top of Tottenham’s list if they parted company with Ange Postecoglou, who is under pressure with Spurs down in 12th.

With Iraola preferring to sign short-term deals and only contracted until the end of next season that could leave Bournemouth vulnerable, although sources close to the Spaniard say he is happy on the Dorset coast.

    Why Mitoma rejected Saudi revealed

Kaoru Mitoma is a rare breed in modern football, a player who puts ambition before money.

The Brighton winger was subject of a shock £74m bid from Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr in the final days of the transfer widow.

But even if the Seagulls were tempted to cash in on their Japanese international, which they were reluctant to do, talkSPORT has been told he immediately rebuffed the notion of moving to the Middle East.

That’s because the humble 27-year-old, who could have set himself up financially for life by linking up with Cristiano Ronaldo, has his sights set on one day playing in the Champions League.

What the Saudi interest has achieved is to strengthen Brighton’s bargaining position when an elite Premier League or European club do come calling by driving up his asking price.

After being compared to Arsenal’s Dutch maestro Dennis Bergkamp following his stunning goal of the season contender against Chelsea, there is every chance the big boys could come calling.

Spurs coach wanted by Championship club

Swansea could turn to Ryan Mason in their hunt for a new manager.

Tottenham assistant coach Mason was high on the Swans’ wanted list before they appointed Luke Williams in January last year.

And after deciding to give Williams the boot after a run of eight defeats from their last ten games, the ex-England midfielder still has admirers among the Welsh club’s hierarchy.

Mason also held talks with Anderlecht in October before deciding to stay at Spurs, so it remains to be seen if he is willing to leave now.

As talkSPORT reported on Monday, former Oxford boss Des Buckingham is also among the front-runners to replace the sacked Williams.

However, this notebook understands Russell Martin has no interest in a return to South Wales.

Heung-Min Son put in awkward position by King Charles after Tottenham question

King Charles III left Tottenham captain Heung-Min Son in an awkward position during a short exchange between the pair.

The royal was in attendance at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium to highlight the club’s partnership with the NFL and its positive socio-economic impact on the local community.

    3

Heung-min Son had a brief exchange with King Charles during his visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

On arrival, the King was greeted by locals before entering the stadium where he met men’s team captain Son and women’ s skipper Bethany England.

Although the monarch could only enjoy a short interaction with the South Korean, his line of questioning caused an awkward moment.

Son, accompanied by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was asked about the club’s current plight.

The clip, that has since surfaced on social media, sees the King ask Son: “So who are you playing this weekend then?”

The Tottenham forward replied: “We are going to play against United… Manchester United. On Sunday”.

Charles then asked: “Have you got a good chance?,” to which Son responded with: “I hope so”.

The King probed further asking: “Is the team in good order at the moment?”

A sheepish-looking Son answered: “We are in a difficult moment but we are working hard.”

The hard-to-watch exchange saw Levy broadly smiling in the background as his captain did his best to entertain the King.

Son has been unable to reach his previous heights this season having netted just six goals in 21 Premier League appearances.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have struggled for form in a season hampered by ongoing injuries to key players.

Spurs are on a torrid run of one win in eight Premier League games while recent exits in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup have piled the pressure on Postecoglou.

Tottenham are 14th in the table and a whopping 16 points adrift of fourth placed Chelsea

Spurs’ objectives for the season were to break into the top four and secure a place in next season’s Champions League – something that now appears unlikely.

Their hopes of ending a 17-year wait for silverware now rest on success in the Europa League with Spurs currently the bookies favourites to win the competition.

Success in Bilbao in May would also see Postecoglou’s side claim an unlikely place in next year’s Champions League while the Australian would have kept his vow of winning a trophy in his second season.

If he is to steer Spurs to success this season then he will have to do it the hard way, and that means winning the fans over again.

Sunday’s FA Cup defeat at Aston Villa saw fans display their anger at Postecogolou while chanting for Levy to leave the club.

However, the former Celtic boss will welcome the imminent returns of defensive pairing Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven following injury.

In attack, Postecoglou should soon see summer signing Dominic Solanke return alongside long-term casualty Wilson Odobert.

The key to Spurs’ European hopes and Postecoglou’s long-term future lies on whether they can avoid recurring injuries in the business end of the season.

Mathys Tel in shock U-turn as Bayern forward completes Tottenham loan move

Mathys Tel has joined Tottenham on loan – just days after rejecting a move to north London.

Spurs had agreed a permanent transfer for the Bayern Munich forward, only for the 19-year-old to snub a switch on Friday.

    3

But he has now had a change of heart and joined Ange Postecoglou‘s side as he longs for regular game time, joining until the end of the season, although there is an option to make the move permanent.

Postecoglou spoke to him over Zoom this weekend and changed his mind over a move to the north London club.

Spurs will cover the entirety of the Frenchman’s salary during his stay in England.

Tottenham have acted fast to secure his services with Arsenal believed to have opened talks to sign him earlier on deadline day.

Meanwhile, Manchester United had two loan bids rejected by Bayern for the versatile forward over the weekend.

However, the move ultimately hit a stumbling block after the Red Devils refused to pay the requested £6.6million loan fee.

Chelsea were another interested club, though Tel had reservations over how much he would play with the Blues boasting a stacked front line.

It’s been a disappointing so far for Tel, who is yet to get on the score sheet from any of his 14 appearances under Vincent Kompany.

He has been limited to just eight Bundesliga outings – starting on just two occasions.

Tel’s arrival at Spurs will be welcome news to fans who have been crying out for a new forward.

Tottenham currently have wingers Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson on the sidelines due to injury.

Meanwhile striker Dominic Solanke is also out due to a knee knock, and isn’t expected back until the end of the month.

This could see Tel come in to lead the line, or be deployed on the left wing to allow skipper Son Heung-min to start up top instead.

And Tel could now get his first taste of English football against Liverpool on Thursday night.

Spurs travel to Anfield for the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg where they hold a precious 1-0 lead having won the first leg.

Tel’s arrival comes on a day that’s seen Spurs endure plenty of setbacks as they had a £70million bid rejected for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

They’ve also missed out on the chance to sign Axel Disasi, the Chelsea defender who’s decided to join Aston Villa on loan instead of Spurs.

‘Stupid’ – League One boss issues grovelling apology for Postecoglou comment

Leyton Orient head coach Richie Wellens has admitted his regret following a comment about Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

The O’s boss had seen his team lose 1-0 to fellow League One play-off hopefuls Stockport County.

And after the match he had been asked if injuries had played a part in the defeat, with Sean Clare and Omar Beckles absent.

He responded: “I’m not Ange Postecoglou who will keep using it as an excuse.”

The clip soon went viral with Tottenham fans furious at the lack of respect shown by the Orient boss.

Spurs currently have two players out on loan with the O’s with Josh Keeley starring in goal and Jamie Donley who has been key in their recent form with five goals and six assists.

Some supporters immediately demanded those players should be recalled due to the commnets.

“Unprofessional to a high degree imo,” said one.

While another added: “Recall our players back.”

And a third said: “And we should cut all ties with them for the foreseeable future.”

The two clubs have had good relations for many years with several loans taking place, including one for Harry Kane in 2011, which helped kick-start his incredible career.

The clubs also kept strong ties after the death of ex-Leyton Orient manager and Tottenham League Cup winner Justin Edinburgh.

And currently Tottenham Women play the majority of their home games at Brisbane Road too.

Quickly Wellens returned with an swift and unerring apology.

“After today’s game, I was asked about the injuries within our squad and, without thinking, I made a stupid comment about Tottenham Hotspur,” he said on Orient’s official website.

“That comment was brought to my attention later in the evening and having watched my interview back I am deeply embarrassed and regret what I said.

“At Leyton Orient, we have a strong relationship with Tottenham Hotspur and it was never my intention to say anything that would jeopardise that. Their manager, Ange Postecoglou, is a world-class coach and I want to apologise for my comments and wish Spurs all the very best for the second half of the season.”

After the 1-0 loss, Orient now sit sixth in the League One table.

They have 44 points, 15 points off second place Wycombe Wanderers, as they occupy the final play-off place.

Spurs goalkeeper to make debut against Newcastle – nine years after joining club

Goalkeeper Brandon Austin is set to make a long-awaited Tottenham debut against Newcastle on Saturday, talkSPORT understands.

Under-pressure manager Ange Postecoglou is without back-up goalkeeper Fraser Forster due to a sickness bug in the Tottenham camp.

    3

First-choice Guglielmo Vicario remains out with a long-term ankle injury.

Austin joined Spurs nine years ago but has never made a competitive senior appearance in English football.

Tottenham are without a number of players due to injury and suspension, including first-choice defenders Destiny Udogie, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

Postecoglou’s men are currently 11th and in the middle of their worst league run since 2008, having failed to win any of their last three matches.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have won their last four top-flight fixtures by an aggregate score of 13-0, with striker Alexander Isak in red-hot form.

Austin spent time on loan at Danish club Viborg FF in 2019 and MLS side Orlando City in 2021.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper signed a new long-term contract with Tottenham in May 2024 and it was expected he would become second-choice behind Vicario.

Austin is known to be gifted with the ball at his feet, having made 78 appearances for Tottenham’s various youth teams.

Although Forster is unwell, question marks about his suitability to Spurs’ style have come up in Vicario’s absence, with Tottenham conceding 15 goals in their last seven outings.

Against Manchester United in the 4-3 League Cup win, Forster was at fault for two goals, but has retained his manager’s backing.

Postecoglou is said to be eyeing a move for Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone this month as Spurs desperately seek cover between the sticks.

talkSPORT understands Tottenham are also considering a January swoop for AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori.

Newcastle, West Ham and Brentford are also keen on the former Chelsea centre-back amid his recent struggles in Italy.

Speaking on Friday, under-pressure Postecoglou said: “It’s not a matter of pushing but I think the club are working hard to try and sort of get some help for the playing group and it’s no secret, we need to bolster our numbers up a little bit. January is not an easy month.

“We understand it’s not an easy time to bring people in particularly quickly. At the same time we still want to make sure we do what we think is the best thing for us rather than sort of just, you know, panic and bring people in who aren’t going to be a suitable fit.

“They are not having New Year parties, they are out there working trying to improve our situation and they’ll continue to do so.”

Tottenham make unwanted Premier League history after conceding first yet again

Tottenham have created unwanted Premier League history by becoming the first team to concede first in 15 home games in a single calendar year.

Ange Postecoglou‘s men have made it a habit of going behind first in 2024 in front of their own fans.

    1

And against Wolves on Sunday afternoon it was no different, with the visitors needing just seven minutes to take the lead.

A brilliantly worked free-kick saw Hwang Hee-chan take aim from outside the box where he curled home in the bottom right corner.

With that, Spurs have become the first team since the inception of the Premier League in 1992 to concede first in 15 home games from January-December.

Spurs have now fallen behind first in seven top-flight home matches this term out from their ten fixtures at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

From those matches, they have won just three times – against Brentford, West Ham and Aston Villa.

They have gone on to lose on three occasions – against Arsenal, Ipswich and Liverpool.

‘Big call’ – Huge Heung-Min Son contract claim made by ex-Premier League striker

Tottenham have been told to make a huge decision on the future of club captain Heung-Min Son.

The South Korean superstar is coming to the end of his current contract in north London but is currently in sporadic form as Spurs struggle.

    3

Son is not as prolific, or as effective, as he once was and looked toothless against Nottingham ForesCredit: Getty

Defensive injury issues have hampered Ange Postecloglou’s team in the Premier League.

They have, though, reached the League Cup semi-finals where they will face Liverpool, and are well-placed in the Europa League too.

Son has 13 goal contributions 21 appearances across all competitions but wasn’t anywhere near his usual self against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

That form has led former Premier League striker Tony Cascarino to query if the 32-year-old will get the new deal he wants.

And he believes there is a chance the next five months could be his last in north London, insisting sometimes difficult decision need to be made.

He told talkSPORT: “I don’t think Son will stay at Spurs. No, I don’t. I think it’s one of them that you’ve got to make a big call on as well.

“He’s been brilliant for them over the years, but it’s time to move on in football sometimes.”

Tottenham do have the option to extend the South Korean’s deal but talks are ongoing over a renewal.

However, Cascarino is insistent it would take a big resurgence in form for Spurs to pull the trigger on a new deal.

He added: “He will survive, or they would definitely keep him, if he had a second part of the season that was superb.

Son is into his second season as captain in north London

    3

“If he has that season where it hasn’t really worked to now, and then he goes and gets 15 or 12 goals in the second part of the season, plays well, then Tottenham will probably use that option.

“But as it is today, I think it’s more likely that he could go.”

Son, now the club’s all-time top assister in Premier League history, is not the only top-flight star in this predicament.

Kevin De Bruyne is in the same bout but Cascarino believes Man City’s decision about retaining the Belgian playmaker relies on how fit he is.

He added: “It’s another big call for Manchester City, because if it’s a fit Kevin De Bruyne, then you’ve still got one hell of a talent. He still won’t lose his ability to pass the ball.

“But they look a team a little bit like Manchester United. They’re running out of legs on the pitch in many different positions.”

Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood is also out of contract in the summer – and has been in fine form.

Cascarino, though, believes he should easily be able to claim a new contract from his current employers.

He added: “I think Chris Wood, Forest will try and give him another year, because he doesn’t rely on pace.

“You’re talking about a player that never has to think about, ‘Oh, he’s lost half a yard’. It doesn’t matter if Chris Wood loses half a yard.

“If you’ve got Anthony Elanga one side and Callum Hudson-Odoi the other, and Morgan Gibbs-White joining him, and Elliot Anderson joining him as well, you don’t really need to worry about that.

“He could do another year, no problem. So I don’t see that as an issue.”

Cairney goes from hero to zero as Fulham skipper is sent off for horror tackle

Tom Cairney rescued a point for Fulham at Tottenham before being sent off for a horror tackle on Dejan Kulusevski.

The Cottagers skipper had an eventful 20-minute cameo off the bench as Marco Silva’s side escaped with a 1-1 draw in north London.

    3

Cairney was sent off for this challenge on Kulusevski

Cairney was introduced off the bench in the 62nd minute with Fulham trailing following Brennan Johnson’s opener.

And just five minutes later, he hauled the visitors level with a beautiful curling strike into the bottom right corner.

It was his first goal away from home since March 2010 during his time spell at Hull.

But he soon went from hero to zero after being given his marching orders in the 82nd minute.

The 33-year-old was initially given a yellow card by referee Darren Bond for a challenge on Kulusevski.

But he was then instructed to go to the pitchside monitor by VAR where replays showed Cairney’s studs-up lunge into the back of the Sweden international’s calf.

And Bond was given no chance but to upgrade his initial booking to a straight red for serious foul play.

Commenting on the tackle on talkSPORT commentary, Sam Ellard simply said: “That could have broken his leg.”

Meanwhile the Premier League Match Centre’s X account posted: “The referee’s call of yellow card for the challenge by Cairney on Kulusevski is checked by VAR, who recommended an on-field review for serious foul play.

“The referee then issued a red card to Cairney.”

Cairney will now miss the next three games for Fulham.

He will now be absent for Thursday’s clash with Brighton at Craven Cottage.

And he will then be unavailable for next Sunday’s clash with Arsenal in west London and then the trip to Liverpool on December 14.

Thankfully for Fulham, Spurs didn’t make them pay for having a man less as they shared the spoil at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The result leaves Spurs in seventh spot – three points off the top four.

As for Fulham, they remain in tenth spot – just one point behind Ange Postecoglou’s men.
