WATCH: Maheesh Theekshana cleans up Sunil Narine with an unplayable delivery in CPL 2024 Eliminator

In a gripping Eliminator match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024, Barbados Royals emerged victorious against the Trinbago Knight Riders by 9 wickets, successfully chasing down a revised target of 60 runs in just 4.2 overs using the DLS method. This win propelled the Royals into the next round of the tournament, demonstrating their prowess and resilience under pressure.

The match was marked by a standout performance from David Miller, whose explosive unbeaten 50 runs off just 17 balls proved instrumental in securing the victory. In addition to that remarkable match, one of the standout moments was Maheesh Theekshana‘s stunning delivery that clean-bowled Sunil Narine.

Maheesh Theekshana’s brilliant wicket of Sunil Narine

In the first over of the innings, Theekshana executed a stunning delivery to dismiss Narine, showcasing his exceptional bowling skills. The delivery was pitched back of a length, enticing Narine to come down the wicket. As Narine advanced, Theekshana cleverly bowled a ball that spun away from him, creating a deceptive angle. Narine aimed to play the ball straight down the ground, trying to counter the spin. However, the ball curved sharply, eluding his bat and crashing into the stumps. This clever piece of bowling not only claimed Narine’s wicket but also set a tone for Theekshana’s performance in the match. The wicket marked Trinbago at 2/1, with Narine scoring just 2 runs off 3 balls.

This was quickly followed by the fall of Jason Roy for 25 runs, leaving the team struggling at 54 for 2. Nevertheless, Nicholas Pooran steadied the innings with a brilliant performance, scoring an impressive 91 runs off 60 balls, striking 6 fours and 5 sixes in his innings. Kieron Pollard contributed with 17 runs, while Andre Russell remained not out on 20, ensuring a solid finish to the innings.

Barbados Royals’ chase: David Miller’s fireworks propel Royals to victory

IPL 2024: Videos of Shreyas Iyer and Sunil Narine’s special celebration with KKR teammates go viral

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emerged as emphatic champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, dismantling Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final at the M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday. This comprehensive victory marked their third IPL title and went down as the most lopsided final in IPL history.

    KKR’s dominance on full display

KKR displayed their absolute supremacy, chasing down a meagre 113-run target (the lowest ever in an IPL final) with a staggering 8 wickets and 57 balls to spare. This clinical performance capped off a season where they were arguably the most consistent team, finishing with just three losses throughout the entire tournament.

Meanwhile, SRH, considered the most entertaining team in the IPL, simply couldn’t match the KKR juggernaut. This defeat marked their third loss to the Knight Riders this season, having fallen to them twice in the league stage and once in the playoffs.

    Gautam Gambhir’s midas touch

KKR’s resurgence can be partly attributed to the return of Gautam Gambhir, their two-time championship-winning captain, who rejoined the franchise as a mentor. His impact was immediate, instilling an aggressive playing style and a winning mentality within the team. Gambhir’s leadership also focused on giving players clear roles and bringing out their best potential.

    Champions’ Celebrations

The jubilation continued at the team hotel, where a celebratory cake and champagne awaited the victorious KKR squad. Sunil Narine, who recently celebrated his birthday, had the honours of cake cutting, followed by skipper Shreyas Iyer christening the occasion with a champagne shower for his teammates. The boisterous celebrations, complete with cheers echoing through the night, promised a night of revelry for the well-deserved champions.

The Lucknow Super Giants’ bowling attack struggled to contain the onslaught, with only Naveen ul Haq managing to make a dent with figures of 3 wickets for 49 runs.

Harshit Rana, Varun Chakravarthy shine with the ball

Narine’s international career has been nothing short of spectacular. He represented the West Indies in 6 Test matches, 65 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 51 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). His significant contributions to the team were instrumental in the West Indies’ victory in the T20 World Cup in 2012.

“I appreciate it has been over 4 years since I last played for West Indies, but today I am announcing my retirement from international cricket. I would like to acknowledge and thank Cricket West Indies, the coaching staff, passionate West Indies fans, and of course, my teammates who enabled me to play at the highest level, in all formats, and with some memorable successes,” Narine wrote on Instagram.

  • Kieron Pollard expresses discontent over CPL Rule amid Sunil Narine’s red card controversy

Kieron Pollard expresses discontent over CPL Rule amid Sunil Narine’s red card controversy

In a recent clash between the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) and St Kitts & Nevis Patriots (SKTNP) in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL 2023), Sunil Narine became the first cricketer to incur a red card for a slow over-rate offense.

The CPL, in an effort to combat the persistent issue of slow over rates, introduced this innovative red-card rule for the tournament. As per this rule, if the fielding side falls behind on time and enters the final over, they are compelled to continue the game with one fielder fewer on the field. Moreover, in such a scenario, they must have a fifth and sixth fielder inside the 30-yard circle at the commencement of the 18th and 19th overs. Additionally, the team can only position two fielders outside the 30-yard circle.

In the fixture, the captain of the Riders, Kieron Pollard, won the toss and elected to field. The Patriots’ opener, Andre Fletcher, commenced the innings with a flourish, while Sherfane Rutherford‘s late surge was geared toward propelling his team to a competitive total.

An extraordinary and unprecedented event unfolded

However, a remarkable and unprecedented incident occurred just before the commencement of the final over of the Patriots’ innings. The on-field umpire summoned Pollard and brandished a red card to the Riders. This marked the debut of the red card in this year’s CPL, signifying the gravity of their slow over rate. As a penalty for this transgression, TKR found themselves fielding with only 10 players during the last over, with just two permitted outside the 30-yard circle. Responding to this situation, Pollard instructed Narine, who had already completed his quota of four overs with remarkable figures of 3/24, to vacate the field.

The Riders had to grapple with the ramifications of fielding with reduced personnel as the Patriots’ skipper, Rutherford, seized the opportunity. Rutherford launched a scathing attack on veteran Dwayne Bravo, amassing 18 runs in the final over, elevating their total to 178/5 in the allotted 20 overs.

Fortunately for The Riders, the costly final over, played shorthanded, did not hinder their cause as they successfully chased down the target of 179 with plenty to spare, securing their inaugural victory of the season.

Pollard’s candid remarks leave no room for ambiguity

Following the game, when quizzed about his thoughts on the newly introduced red-card rule, The Riders skipper, Pollard, candidly shared his perspective.

“To be honest, it will take away the hard work everyone has done (prior to the penalties). We are like the pawns and we are going to do what we are told. We are going to play as fast as we can. If you are penalized for 30-45 seconds in a tournament like this, it is absolutely ridiculous,” Pollard said at the post-match presentation.
