IPL 2024: RR skipper Sanju Samson reveals the reason of defeat against SRH in Qualifier 2

Despite emerging as the prime contender to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the halfway point of the season, Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) campaign met its conclusion before the final. The Sanju Samson-led team suffered a 36-run defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Qualifier 2 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday (May 24).

RR’s commendable bowling effort falls short

Bowling first, Rajasthan did a commendable job of restricting Hyderabad’s intimidating batting unit, which has broken records aplenty this season, to a score of 175/9. Key bowlers managed to keep the Hyderabad batters in check, showcasing their skill and strategy. However, despite their best efforts, the target proved too challenging for the Rajasthan’ batters, who could only accumulate 139 runs in response.

    Sanju Samson’s post-match reflections

After the game, Samson credited Hyderabad’s spinners and noted the pitch’s unexpected behavior in the second innings, acknowledging that their middle-over performance against spin was lacking and the turning wicket was well-utilized by the opposition.

“This was a big game. I am proud of our bowlers, but we were short in the middle overs. Their use of spin against our right-handed batsmen was good; we lost the game against spin in the middle-overs. When the ball was turning, we could’ve used sweep or used our feet, but they bowled well. The wicket started behaving differently in the second innings. The ball started turning a bit and they used that advantage really well,” Samson said in the post-match presentation.

    Unpredictable conditions

Samson discussed the unpredictable conditions, noting the absence of dew and increased ball turn in the second innings, which complicated their chase. He reflected on their batting strategy, acknowledging they could have used the crease better, but praised Shahbaz Ahmed and Abhishek Sharma for their effective bowling.

“It was hard to assess and guess when dew would come; it didn’t come and it started turning a lot in the second innings, which made things difficult for us. The unexpected turn of the ball added to the challenges faced by Rajasthan Royals during their chase. Samson also reflected on the team’s batting strategy, noting, When the ball was stopping and turning, we could have used the crease a bit better but they (Shahbaz Ahmed and Abhishek Sharma) bowled well and didn’t give us anything to work with,” the 29-year-old concluded.

Twitter reactions: Heinrich Klaasen, Shahbaz Ahmed drive SRH to final after thumping win over RR in Qualifier 2 | IPL 2024

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) booked their place in the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 after a thumping win against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday. The Sunrisers will now face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the summit clash of the ongoing season.

Heinrich Klaasen powers SRH to a competitive total

Sunrisers Hyderabad put up a challenging total of 175 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was anchored by Heinrich Klaasen, who scored a crucial 50 off 34 balls, including 4 sixes. Travis Head (34 off 28) and Rahul Tripathi (37 off 15) provided strong support at the top of the order, while Jaydev Unadkat contributed a quick 5 off 2 balls towards the end.

Rajasthan Royals’ bowlers had mixed results. Trent Boult and Avesh Khan were the pick of the bowlers, each taking 3 wickets and conceding 45 and 27 runs, respectively. Sandeep Sharma also chipped in with 2 wickets for 25 runs in his 4 overs, providing crucial breakthroughs.

Shahbaz Ahmed shines with the ball

In response, Rajasthan Royals struggled to chase down the target and managed to score 139 for 7 in their 20 overs. Despite a promising start by Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored a quickfire 42 off 21 balls, and a fighting 56 off 35 balls from Dhruv Jurel, the Royals’ middle order faltered under the pressure of a disciplined SRH bowling attack.

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s bowlers were efficient and effective. Shahbaz Ahmed was the standout performer, taking 3 wickets for 23 runs in his 4 overs. Abhishek Sharma also impressed with figures of 2 for 24 in his 4 overs, while Pat Cummins and T Natarajan took one wicket each, maintaining tight control over the run rate.

    MA Chidambaram Stadium Pitch Report:

Based on past matches held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, the pitch is expected to be favourable for bowlers, particularly spinners. The spin and grip will likely limit scoring opportunities, potentially leading to a match where bowlers dominate proceedings.

Cricket fans in Chennai can expect mostly favourable weather conditions for the upcoming match. While the sky will be cloudy, there is a 0% chance of precipitation, posing no disruption in the game. Despite temperatures possibly reaching 32 degrees Celsius, potentially testing the players’ endurance, the presence of winds at around 19 km/hr should offer some relief. Humidity levels are forecasted to be around 76%, which could impact both batters and bowlers alike.

Twitter erupts as KKR thrash SRH in Qualifier 1 to reach IPL 2024 final

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) registered a convincing eight-wicket victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Qualifier 1 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday (May 22). Mitchell Starc‘s outstanding bowling performance played a crucial role in propelling KKR to the IPL 2024 final. Starc’s lethal bowling, where he picked three vital wickets while maintaining an economy rate of 8.50, not only restricted SRH to a modest total but also set the tone for KKR’s dominant chase. Chasing a target of 160 runs, KKR achieved the target comfortably with 6 wickets and 38 balls to spare, thanks to stellar performances from Venkatesh Iyer and Shreyas Iyer.

    Early wickets derail SRH’s innings

SRH got off to a disastrous start as Travis Head departed for a golden duck in just the second ball of the innings, bowled by Starc. Abhishek Sharma also fell cheaply, caught by Andre Russell off Vaibhav Arora‘s bowling. The quick dismissals of Head and Sharma put SRH under immediate pressure, leaving them struggling at 13/2 within the first two overs.

    Rahul Tripathi’s resilient knock

Rahul Tripathi emerged as the lone warrior for SRH, playing a crucial innings to stabilize the innings. He crafted a well-compiled 55 runs off 35 balls, including 7 fours and a six, anchoring the innings amidst the flurry of wickets falling at the other end. However, despite Tripathi’s efforts, SRH failed to capitalize on his innings and post a substantial total.

    Middle-order struggles and late flourish

While Tripathi held one end, SRH witnessed a collapse in the middle order. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shahbaz Ahmed and Heinrich Klaasen all failed to contribute significantly, departing for single-digit scores. Abdul Samad provided some late fireworks with a quickfire 16 off 12 balls alongside skipper Pat Cummins who made 30 runs, but his efforts were not enough to propel SRH to a challenging score as they were bundled out for 159.

    Kolkata Knight Riders’ disciplined bowling

KKR’s bowling unit put in a disciplined performance to restrict SRH to a below-par total. Starc led the attack brilliantly, claiming 3 crucial wickets. Vaibhav and Harshit Rana provided crucial breakthroughs, picking up a wicket each to keep the pressure on SRH’s batting lineup. Sunil Narine and Russell also chipped in with a wicket each, ensuring that SRH never gained momentum.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sunil Narine’s explosive start

KKR’s chase got off to a flying start, with Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sunil Narine providing a solid foundation. Gurbaz’s aggressive approach saw him score 23 runs off 14 balls, including 2 fours and 2 sixes. Narine supported him well with a brisk 21 off 16 balls, setting the tone for KKR’s pursuit of the target.

Venkatesh Iyer and Shreyas Iyer’s dominant partnership

Following the early dismissals of Gurbaz and Narine, Venkatesh and Shreyas took charge of the innings with a sensational partnership. Venkatesh played a blistering knock, smashing 51 runs off just 28 balls, which included 5 fours and 4 sixes. His aggressive strokeplay put SRH under immense pressure and swung the momentum in KKR’s favor. Shreyas, the KKR captain, provided solid support with an explosive innings of his own, scoring an unbeaten 58 off just 24 balls. His innings was laced with 5 fours and 4 sixes, steering KKR to victory with authority. Starc was ultimately named Player of the Match for his exceptional bowling performance.

    Sunrisers Hyderabad’s bowling effort

Despite a spirited effort from their bowlers, SRH struggled to contain KKR’s batting onslaught. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan managed to pick up a wicket each, but they were expensive, conceding 28 and 22 runs respectively in their 3 overs each. Pat Cummins was the most successful bowler for SRH, picking 1 wicket for 38 runs in his 3 overs. Vijayakanth Viyaskanth and Travis Head also couldn’t stem the flow of runs, as KKR batters dominated the proceedings.

The scene is set for an exciting showdown as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) prepare to face off against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Qualifier 1 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Scheduled on May 21 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, this match holds the key to determining one of the finalists of IPL 2024. Nevertheless, the recent spate of rain interruptions throughout the league, culminating in a washout in Ahmedabad, has introduced an element of uncertainty surrounding the highly anticipated clash between KKR and SRH.

    Rain threat in Ahmedabad?

The upcoming clash between KKR and SRH does not have a backup day scheduled, but cricket enthusiasts in Ahmedabad have reason to cheer. While certain areas like Sabarmati and Motera might experience light rainfall on May 20, with a 33 percent likelihood of precipitation, the outlook for May 21, the pivotal day of the Qualifier 1 match, appears bright. Weather forecasts indicate clear skies both during the day and evening, with no rain in sight.

What if rain plays spoilsport in KKR vs SRH clash?

In case, rain affects the outcome of Qualifier 1 match between KKR and SRH, i.e. the game gets abandoned due to weather conditions or fails to yield a result even after the designated time and Super Overs, then a protocol comes into play. In these cases, the team with the higher standing in the league stage points table will progress directly to the IPL final. Given KKR’s position at the top of the table, they would secure their spot in the final.

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is known for its batting-friendly pitch, providing an ideal environment for batters to thrive.

Pacers can find some assistance, particularly with the new ball, as the pitch offers turn and a bit of bounce. Spinners may also find a hint of turn off the surface.

However, batting usually becomes easier in the second half of the match. Ahmedabad traditionally favours chasing, so the team winning the toss will likely choose to bowl first.

In a significant milestone, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) star Abhishek Sharma has etched his name into the annals of the Indian Premier League (IPL) history by surpassing an iconic record previously held by Indian cricketing maestro Virat Kohli.

Fans react as SRH qualifies for IPL 2024 playoffs after rain abandons match against GT

Match 66 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024  between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Thursday (May 16) was washed out due to relentless rain. This washout secured SRH’s place in the IPL 2024 playoffs, making them the third team to qualify after Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR).

    SRH’s IPL 2024 playoffs journey

Before the match between SRH and GT, SRH were fourth in the IPL standings with 14 points from 12 matches. The washout added one point to their tally, bringing it to 15 points from 13 matches. In contrast, GT ended their campaign with 12 points, falling short of the playoff spots. This marks SRH’s first playoff appearance since the 2020 season, having previously finished 8th in 2021, 2022 and 10th in 2023.

    Pat Cummins’ influence

Pat Cummins, the SRH captain, has been pivotal in their turnaround this season. Fresh off title victories in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 and the ODI World Cup 2023, Cummins has led SRH with a fearless brand of cricket. His leadership has been credited for revitalizing the team and steering them back into playoff contention.

The fans were treated to a light show and music, celebrating SRH’s progress to the playoffs.

    Implications of the washout

Meanwhile, Cummins’ team will face Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 19 at home, with a chance to finish in the top two and secure a spot in Qualifier 1 against table-toppers Kolkata.

    Upcoming virtual knockout

The playoff picture added extra spice to the upcoming clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Bengaluru on Saturday. This match is now effectively a virtual knockout, with both teams vying for a spot in the playoffs. The rain-induced changes have heightened the stakes, promising an exciting end to the league stage of IPL 2024.
