‘Respect the shirt’: Status quo squashed as Popovic issues Socceroos selection statement

Well, that was surprising. Tony Popovic’s 26-player squad to face Saudi Arabia and Bahrain in two crucial World Cup qualifiers over the next fortnight has dismantled the status quo.

Watch selected NRL, AFL, SSN games plus every F1 qualifying session and race live in 4K on Kayo. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited time offer.

The family, as the squad and environment were so often described under former Socceroos coach Graham Arnold, has been broken up and, in its place, sits an eclectic mix of new faces and ones that seemed to be surplus to requirements.

Others, meanwhile, are completely missing through their own choosing; as is the case with Cardiff City midfielder Alex Robertson, or have been excluded, where they were previously part of the furniture.

Popovic, after taking on the role just weeks before the last international window in October, said he wanted to ensure that nobody felt they had a right to a Socceroos jersey. With this squad he has done just that and perhaps the biggest story surrounds three players who won’t feature in Melbourne and Bahrain this month.

Atletico steal victory with last kick | 00:33

    THE MISSING PLAYERS

    Alex Robertson

When Alex Robertson made his debut for Australia in a friendly against Ecuador in March last year, it seemed like the next 100-cap Socceroo had been discovered.

The midfielder, who is now on the books of Championship side Cardiff City, is one of those players blessed with both tactical and technical skill in abundance and it appeared as though the battle for his allegiance was won.

After all, with his father Mark and grandfather, also named Alexander, in the stands in Sydney that night, he became a third-generation Socceroo.

Mark represented Australia in 2001 and Alexander in the mid 1980s.

But Robertson is also eligible to represent Scotland, England and Peru through birth, residence and family.

After playing his junior football in Sydney, Robertson made the move to the UK as a teenager and represented England at youth level.

The 21-year-old hasn’t featured for Australia since a 2-nil friendly defeat to Argentina in Beijing in June last year and whether he adds to his two caps is now up in the air.

Last month, Robertson’s absence from the squad for games against China and Japan was explained as a paperwork issue with FIFA that hadn’t been resolved yet.

Now, it seems, Football Australia has done everything it can to resolve the matter.

“That sits in his hands now,” Popovic said after unveiling his squad in Melbourne.

“If he wants to play for the Socceroos, he needs to make himself available.

“It’s an Alex decision on what he wants to do.

“If he wants to make himself available for the Socceroos then we can look at whether we select him, but at the moment we don’t have that option.

“You have to respect the shirt, the badge; you have to respect the honour of playing for the Socceroos and we also have to respect the fact that everyone can make their own choice.

“Right now, his decision is not to make himself available.”

It’s a measure of Robertson’s immense talent that Popovic went on to say that the door hasn’t been closed because of this latest development, but fans who have long called for his inclusion in green and gold, at least now have some clarity on the matter.

    Nestory Irankunda

The other big name missing from the squad list was that of Nestory Irankunda.

The 18-year-old, who swapped Adelaide United for Bayern Munich in the off-season, has made a positive start to his time at the German powerhouse.

The winger has been scoring for both Bayern II in the Regionalliga and also in the UEFA Youth League, but his output at international level has been mixed.

He looked lively and dangerous in the last fixtures of the Graham Arnold era, but struggled in his first match under Popovic, when handed a starting role against China in Adelaide last month and then didn’t feature against Japan.

Popovic’s system, where the wingers play a more inverted role, doesn’t seem to suit the teenager. He’s more comfortable wider on the right, and so far, that is at odds with Popovic’s preferred tactical set-up.

“It’s just a selection decision,” Popovic said.

“We know he’s a young man with a lot of potential, who is signed at one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“We just feel it is an opportunity for him to settle in at Bayern and get the development that he needs there and the growth.

“We still hope that we really see this potential moving forward from him in the national team in years to come.”

    Keanu Baccus

It won’t be a major headline, but the decision not to call-up Keanu Baccus is still notable.

The combative, deeper lying midfielder, was a mainstay under Arnold, who shot to prominence at the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 while locked in a fierce battle with Argentina’s Lionel Messi in a heart stopping round of 16 defeat in Doha.

Under Popovic, Baccus has only seen 10-minutes of action, and that was in a largely unfamiliar right-back role against Japan, in the 1-1 draw in Saitama.

The new coach has plenty of options in central midfield too in the form of Jackson Irvine, Aiden O’Neill, Max Balard, Anthony Caceres and Patrick Yazbek.

New United boss plays down City win | 01:16

    THE NEW PLAYERS

    Anthony Caceres

Anthony Caceres has often been referred to as the best player never to represent Australia at any level.

Now 32, it appeared the chance of the Sydney FC midfielder shedding that tag was slim, but the door has finally opened.

Caceres seems perfectly suited to Popovic’s system where those further forward are required to be comfortable and make good decisions in extremely tight spaces.

In fact, he’s done just that his whole career.

There was a school of thought over the years that while Caceres was technically gifted, he lacked a killer edge in the final third.

But with three goals, 10 assists and 13 goal involvements to his name last season, those concerns have been allayed, if Popovic ever had them at all.

“He’s been a player that I’ve admired for a very long time,” said Popovic.

    “He deserves his chance.

“Every coach has their ideas and this is his chance now.

    Max Balard

It’s perhaps the ultimate compliment, that after moving from the Central Coast Mariners to Dutch Eredivisie side NAC Breda this season, the local media in the Netherlands quickly dubbed the 23-year-old the ‘Australian Kante.’

It’s a nod to former Leicester City and Chelsea star N’Golo Kante, now playing for Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad, who is one of the finest ball-winning midfielders of his generation.

Balard missed selection for last month’s window, but should now get the chance to shine, after proving to Australia’s new coaching staff that he can be just as damaging with his range of passing as well.

“He’s had some very good performances this year,” Popovic said.

“We’ve been monitoring him prior to the last camp, but I think in the last month, his game has become more consistent; more balanced in his play, with and without the ball.”

    Hayden Matthews

The 20-year-old Sydney FC central defender only signed his first professional contract in January this year and has now earned his maiden international call-up.

At 195 centimetres, he is a towering figure, and although on the surface, it looks like Matthews has been included to get some experience in an extended 26-player squad, it’s interesting that he’s on the radar of the national team boss so early in his career.

    THE RETURNING PLAYERS

    Rhyan Grant

The last time Rhyan Grant featured for the Socceroos was in a third round World Cup qualifying defeat to Japan in Sydney in 2022.

The tireless right-back has seen a long list of players cycle through that position in an Australian shirt since then, but never in his wildest dreams did the Sydney FC captain think he’d be considered again.

“I honestly didn’t see this coming, but I’m absolutely delighted,” Grant said.

The 33-year-old, who has 21-caps to his name, thought his time had passed, and stressed that point whenever the topic of a recall to international football surfaced, but could well be the answer to the problematic position again.

    Brandon Borrello

The search for a striker who can score on a consistent basis is just as puzzling as the absence of an established right back.

Brandon Borrello will fight for minutes alongside Mitch Duke and Kusini Yengi.

The Western Sydney Wanderers quarter-final exit at the hands of Adelaide United in the Australia Cup left the forward short of minutes for the October window, but with 266-minutes and two goals from three games under his belt in the A-League this season, he’s moved back up the pecking order.

    Milos Degenek

Few people are more passionate about the Socceroos jersey than Milos Degenek.

In an extraordinary interview at the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 he offered an insight into the mentality he takes into games.

“The lion mentality is, you either eat or you get eaten, and that’s the simplest way to put it,” Degenek said at the time.

“I used this term before the Peru game with the boys, I said ‘there’s bread on the table’.

“Either we eat tonight; my kids, my wife and my family eats tonight, or they eat and my kids go home to sleep hungry and my wife as well – and I don’t want that to happen.”

Degenek has missed most of 2024 due to injury but is back on the park and played in FK Crvena zvezda’s first round Serbian Cup game just over a week ago.

The 30-year-old, who can play as a central defender or right-back, adds versatility to the squad and even if he doesn’t feature on the field, he’ll be a force for good around the squad.

    Martin Boyle

Martin Boyle looked out of sorts in the September window as the Socceroos stumbled against Bahrain and Indonesia in, what turned out to be, the final days of the Arnold era.

He didn’t feature in Popovic’s first squad, but his form for Hibernian, in Scotland, has been hard to ignore.

The 31-year-old has five goals and five assists to his name this season and could potentially be deployed as an inverted winger or striker.

His experience will also help the side deal with the scale of the challenge in-front of them.

A victory over Saudi Arabia next week will go some way towards rectifying the Socceroos dire start to the third round of qualifying.

Australia is currently second in group C but locked on five points with their next opponents, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

A top two finish in the group earns automatic qualification for the next World Cup in 2026, so the stakes around every fixture from here are high.

Squad: Max Balard, Aziz Behich, Brandon Borrello, Jordy Bos, Martin Boyle, Cameron Burgess, Anthony Caceres, Milos Degenek, Mitch Duke, Joe Gauci (GK), Jason Geria, Craig Goodwin, Rhyan Grant, Ajdin Hrustic, Jackson Irvine, Paul Izzo (GK), Hayden Matthews, Riley McGree, Lewis Miller, Aiden O’Neill, Kye Rowles, Mat Ryan (GK), Harry Souttar, Nishan Velupillay, Patrick Yazbek, Kusini Yengi.

  • Patrick Yazbek suspended for two matches for violating MLS anti-discrimination policy

Patrick Yazbek suspended for two matches for violating MLS anti-discrimination policy

Australian midfielder Patrick Yazbek’s omission from the latest Socceroos squad was not because of him being sanctioned for violating America’s Major League Soccer anti-discrimination policy.

The former Sydney FC player has been suspended for two matches by MLS for an incident that took place in his club Nashville’s 2-0 loss last weekend to Austin FC.

Yazbek’s first-half comment towards an Austin player led to referee Rosendo Mendoza delaying play for five minutes.

Before play restarted, Yazbek – who was making his MLS debut and just his third appearance in all competition for Nashville after joining them last month from Norwegian outfit Viking in a transfer worth – was substituted.

Yazbek, 22, has been banned from playing in Nashville’s matches against Orlando City on September 1 (AEST) and Atlanta United on September 15, and will be required to complete a “restorative practice program”.

A Football Australia spokesman has confirmed the comment was not a racist slur.

It’s understood Socceroos coach Graham Arnold has spoken to Yazbek since the incident.

However, the FA spokesman said Yazbek’s suspension was not the reason he wasn’t chosen in the Socceroos squad announced on Friday for FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Bahrain (Thursday night, Gold Coast) and Indonesia (September 10, Jakarta).

Yazbek made his Socceroos debut in Australia’s 5-0 win over Lebanon on March 26.

However, he wasn’t selected in the Socceroos squad for June’s matches against Bangladesh and Palestine.

Big coup as former Juventus, Bayern Munich star Douglas Costa joins A-League club Sydney FC

Former Juventus and Bayern Munich star Douglas Costa has signed a two-year marquee deal with Sydney FC in a huge boost for not only the Sky Blues but the entire A-League.

The 33-year-old Brazilian winger is a serial silverware winner, with his haul including five trophies with Bayern – one of which being the FIFA Club World Cup – six with Juventus and 11 with Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk.

Costa’s success had helped foster an off-field profile highlighted by having more than 13 million followers across his social media platforms.

“He is one of the most high-profile footballers to ever play on these shores and the eyes of the football world will be on Sydney FC and the A-League this season,” Sydney FC chairman Scott Barlow said.

“Douglas is a proven winner, and his record of titles in the world’s top leagues is testament to that.

“This is yet another landmark signing in our club’s history and we welcome Douglas to Australia.”

Costa, who will arrive in Sydney later this week, has joined the Sky Blues from Brazilian club Fluminense.

“I have been part of some incredible teams throughout my career, winning many titles and I have come to Sydney FC to win more,” said Costa, who made 31 appearances for Brazil between 2014 and 2018.

“Football is in my blood and I arrive in Australia to raise the game in this country, entertain the passionate sporting public and bring silverware to Sydney FC.

“I’m excited to get to know the people, the country and seeing all the fans of every club.”

Sky Blues coach Ufuk Talay said: “It’s exciting to be able to attract a player of the calibre of Douglas Costa to Sydney FC.

“He is a world class talent with 24 career trophies. His experience and knowledge will be a positive influence on the playing group.”

Costa’s first competitive appearance for the Sky Blues is expected to be an AFC Champions League 2 match against Hong Kong outfit Eastern FC on September 19 at Jubilee Oval.

  • ‘Lost my love for the game’: Matilda star’s huge Arsenal reveal ahead of epic Aussie battle

‘Lost my love for the game’: Matilda star’s huge Arsenal reveal ahead of epic Aussie battle

Matildas star Caitlin Foord has credited Arsenal with restoring her love for football after a period of “going through the motions” as a professional player.

Foord is one of three Matildas along with Steph Catley and Kyra Cooney-Cross in the Gunners squad that will take on the women’s A-League All-Stars at Marvel Stadium on Friday night,

“To represent Arsenal, and to do that on home soil, I never would have imagined that,” Foord said on Wednesday at the Women in Football business brunch.

“It’s never been done before. Selfishly I’m really excited to be home, to be here with Arsenal to play the (A-League) girls.”

However, before 29-year-old Foord joined the English Women’s Super League club from Sydney FC in 2020, she was showing a distinct lack of excitement about her football career.

“I felt like I lost my love for the game,” she said.

“I was going through the motions, and when I got to Arsenal, that sparked me again.

“I enjoyed playing again. I love the way that we play, the style, the league, the competition in the league – it was really exciting.

“It really brought that back for me, and it’s been like that ever since. We just need to win more trophies now.”

The Gunners finished the WSL season in third place, five points behind champions Chelsea.

Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall was confident his side could win the title next season.

“This team has everything it takes in order to win the league as well, but we just need to be prepared to do the work for that next season,” Eidevall said.

“This trip here is a great opportunity for us to really blend with first-team and full-time professionals … together with some of our best academy players.

“To see them on the pitch together, that’s going to be a really nice opportunity for me.”

The All-Stars team will be coached by former Arsenal manager Joe Montemurro, much to the delight of Gunners star Katie McCabe.

“It was a real pinnacle point in my career at Arsenal when I thought I was out the door, and Joe came in and kept a hold of me and I’ve been here ever since,” McCabe said.

“He’s always like family. He’s always welcome back to the club with open arms.

“I’m sure he’ll be putting on a good show with the All-Stars.”

‘Ought to be embarrassed with himself’: A-League star blasted over acting in bizarre red card

An utterly bizarre straight red card has soured Newcastle’s 3-1 upset win over Sydney FC in the A-League on Sunday afternoon.

The Jets were leading 2-0 when Sydney forward Robert Mak raised his left arm while walking away from the Jets’ Phillip Cancar, knocking the latter in the face.

“He’s just trying to say leave me alone,” commentator Simon Hill said.

“You’ve got to be careful when you’re throwing your arms around.”

After a beat, Cancar fell to the ground in pain, and the referee determined the incident was violent conduct warranting the straight red.

It seemed clear he was simulating the effect of the contact and was roundly criticised by fans and analysts alike.

“Cancar ought to be embarrassed with himself,” the SMH’s Vince Rugari tweeted.

  • Why teenage sensation Nestory Irankunda was left out of Olyroos squad for under-23 Asian Cup

Why teenage sensation Nestory Irankunda was left out of Olyroos squad for under-23 Asian Cup

The door remains ajar for Nestory Irankunda to represent Australia at this year’s Olympics despite the “emotional” A-League teenage sensation missing selection for the Paris Games qualifiers for “welfare” reasons.

Socceroos pair Marco Tilio and Garang Kuol – who were both in Australia’s 2022 World Cup squad – will spearhead the Olyroos’ bid for 2024 Olympics qualification at the AFC under-23 Asian Cup.

A top-three finish at the April 15-May 3 tournament in Qatar will secure the Olyroos a berth at the Paris Games, while placing fourth will earn them a spot in the AFC-CAF (Africa) playoff match against Guinea for the final Olympics qualification place.

Bayern Munich-bound Irankunda, who scored a hat-trick for Adelaide United last week, is the most notable omission from the Olyroos’ 23-man squad.

Olyroos coach Tony Vidmar said he could have been “selfish” by picking Irankunda, but his priority was the 18-year-old winger’s wellbeing.

“With Nestor, we have to be really mindful,” Vidmar said.

“He’s just such an emotional player, and what’s happened to him this season, I think he’s on a rollercoaster 24/7.

“That’s just the way he is. That’s the way it’s gone, and we have to look at the bigger picture.

“We want Nestor to be a 10-year-plus Socceroo. He’s going to be the future of the national teams, that’s for sure.

“We just have to be mindful of what we do with him in the national team space. At the moment, we don’t want to damage him.

“The welfare of the player is No.1. He’s just turned 18, and it’s a big ask for him to come in, (with) all these expectations from people outside.

“He’s been through so much this year. I’d hate to be in his shoes. He’s just been prodded at. Everyone’s poking at him, everyone wants a piece of him.

“I understand playing for the national team is a huge thing, I’ve spoken to him about that.

Marco Tilio (left) and Garang Kuol will lead Australia’s charge for Olympic Games qualification. Picture: Mark Kolbe/Getty ImagesSource: Getty Images

“He just wants to play football for his club and then get ready for that next part of his journey.”

It’s a journey that could yet result in Irankunda being selected for the Olympics should Australia qualify.

“He’s always been in that (Olympics) consideration. He’s always been on our list of players,” Vidmar said.

“He’s one where after the qualifiers, and when we do qualify for the Olympics, it’ll be again having that discussion, having a chat with him.

“He likes that, he likes that contact, and he’s been fairly open and honest with me with a lot of things.”

Apart from Irankunda, a host of eligible players – including Socceroos duo Alessandro Circati (Parma, Italy) Patrick Yazbek (Viking FK, Norway), Nicholas Bilokapic (Peterborough United, England), Calem Nieuwenhof (Hearts, Scotland), Cameron Peupion (Brighton, England), Nectarios Triantis (Hibs, Scotland) – also missed under-23 Asian Cup selection due to their overseas club teams not being obligated to release them, as the tournament does not take place in a FIFA international window.

“I’ve been open and honest with my disappointment that the Asian Cup falls outside of a FIFA window, but we knew access to players would be a challenge and it’s something we’ve planned for in recent months,” Vidmar said.

“I just feel for those who’ve not been given the opportunity to join us, as representing your country at any level is something you never forget, and they would have benefited greatly from the experience.”

Tilio, who has returned to Melbourne City on loan from Celtic, is one of 15 A-League players selected for under-23 Asian Cup duty.

Kuol, whose older brother Alou is also in the squad, is on loan to Dutch outfit FC Volendam from English Premier League club Newcastle United.

“Everything we’ve done over the last 12 months has been focused on preparing for the Asian Cup,” Vidmar said.

“We set clear goals and expectations around what we want to achieve in Doha, and I’ve been really impressed by the way the group has taken ownership of that.

“There’s a strong desire and belief within this group that I believe will serve us well throughout the challenging moments that an international tournament of this calibre will present.”

“Our ability to prepare for this, build depth across the squad and foster important connections between our final squad gives me every confidence in this group and what they can achieve in Doha.”

Olyroos: Patrick Beach (Melbourne City), Lachlan Brook (Western Sydney Wanderers), Cameron Cook (Perth Glory), Jordan Courtney-Perkins (Sydney FC), Louis D’Arrigo (Lechia Gdansk), Jacob Farrell (Central Coast Mariners), Jake Girdwood-Reich (Sydney FC), Steven Hall (Brighton), Jake Hollman (Macarthur FC), Jacob Italiano (Borussia Monchengladbach II), Alou Kuol (Central Coast Mariners), Garang Kuol (FC Volendam), Nicolas Milanovic (Western Sydney Wanderers), Mark Natta (Newcastle Jets), Alexandar Popovic (Gwangju FC), Adrian Segecic (FC Dordrecht), Callum Talbot (Melbourne City), Ryan Teague (Melbourne Victory), Marco Tilio (Melbourne City), Mohamed Toure (Paris FC), Jordi Valadon (Melbourne Victory), Nishan Velupillay (Melbourne Victory), Rhys Youlley (KVC Westerlo).

  • Wait… so why was he playing? Coach slams ‘disgraceful’ trolls as all-time miss blamed on injury

Wait… so why was he playing? Coach slams ‘disgraceful’ trolls as all-time miss blamed on injury

Sydney FC coach Ufuk Talay has slammed online trolls for the “disgraceful” messages they have sent Sky Blues striker Patrick Wood after a horror goal miss last weekend, revealing he played with an injured ankle which will now sideline him for 12 weeks.

Wood, 21, has been targeted by cyberbullies after missing a sitter in Sydney’s 3-1 win over the Central Coast Mariners last Saturday in Gosford as he avoided using his injured left foot to shoot when he was just metres out with an empty net in front of him.

After a tough few days dealing with the online abuse, Wood has succumbed to the injury and won’t play again until May.

Talay was quick to defend his young marksman on Thursday.

“Some comments and some messages that have been sent to him have been quite disgraceful,” the Sydney FC coach said.

“I understand that we live in the public eye, but what they don’t see is that he’s had a stress fracture in his ankle for quite a few weeks, and he’s been playing through it with the pain.

“He’s a player that gives his all every time he puts on the shirt. He plays with a lot of pride.

“Players make mistakes, coaches make mistakes, referees make mistakes. We’re all human, we’re not robots, we’re not going to get it right 100 per cent of the time.

“It’s very disappointing (that he’s received) those messages.”

Wood’s teammate Anthony Caceres also leapt to the forward’s defence.

“I don’t think people understand how difficult it is to play when you’re injured, let alone have a stress fracture the way ‘Woody’ does have,” Caceres said.

“The reaction is pretty disappointing. He’s not the first person to miss a chance.

“Things on the field happen at 100 miles an hour.”

The Sky Blues are aiming for back-to-back wins when they host Adelaide United at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.

“The group’s been very positive. The energy has been very high so far,” Talay said.

“The boys have been working very hard.”

  • ‘Inspired’ Matildas boss reveals surprise Ange visit as crunch Olympic qualifier looms

‘Inspired’ Matildas boss reveals surprise Ange visit as crunch Olympic qualifier looms

Matildas mentor Tony Gustavsson has turned to super coach Ange Postecoglou for some “inspiration” in his bid to guide Australia to this year’s Olympic Games without the help of star striker Sam Kerr.

Gustavsson has named a 23-player squad – missing the injured Kerr – for this month’s two-legged, home-and-away Paris Olympics qualifier against Uzbekistan in Tashkent and Melbourne.

Kerr (knee) was one of three injured players not considered for selection, along with goalkeeper Lydia Williams (ankle) and defender Charlie Rule (hip).

Recalled to the squad after a six-year absence is veteran Canberra United striker Michelle Heyman, while Western United midfielder Chloe Logarzo also returns after failing in her bid to be picked for World Cup duty last year despite recovering from a serious knee injury.

“Selecting this squad has been a challenge with a lot of moving parts, from injuries to some players and reduction of competitive match minutes for other players due to off-seasons,” Gustavsson said.

“There’s been a lot of players fighting for spots here and a lot of players performing, so we tried to look at a combination of continuity and connections, people that know the way we play, that know each other, that’s been with us for a while.

“We also look at form and playing time.”

Gustavsson is also taking a look at himself as he bids to not only guide the Matildas over the Uzbekistan hurdle but also inspire the team to a medal in Paris after fourth-placed finishes at the World Cup and the Tokyo Olympics.

It’s one of the reasons he was due to visit former Socceroos coach and current Tottenham manager Postecoglou on Tuesday in London.

“Sometimes as a coach, it’s almost like a personal development trip as well to get some inspiration and insights, and Ange knows everything about the Australian landscape,” Gustavsson said.

“He’s had a phenomenal journey, and what he’s done with Spurs in terms of playing style, an identity and confidence from being a club and a team lacking confidence … is just tremendously impressive.

“We have been invited to watch training and then have a lunch with him, so I hope to get some experience from him and learn, interact and get inspired, and hopefully also watch a couple of things in training that they do that I can pick up.

“Sometimes it’s just going out there and getting some inspiration, and whether it’s about leadership or training content or hearing Ange’s experience about the journey in Australian football – I’m really looking forward to that.”

Gustavsson said he had no qualms about selecting 35-year-old Heyman in the absence of Chelsea star Kerr.

“With the way Michelle has played (for Canberra), she deserves to be selected – it’s purely on performance,” he said.

‘I don’t get involved’: Ange remains coy amid fresh twist in pursuit of $56m star

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou was noncommittal when quizzed on the club’s pursuit of Radu Dragusin as an Italian heavyweight joined the race for the Romanian defender.

Injuries to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven has exposed Tottenham’s alarming lack of depth at centre back as Postecoglou has been forced to use Ben Davies and Emerson Royal — fullbacks by trade — in the middle of defence.

Dragusin has been eyed by Tottenham as a key target and according to Sky Sports, an offer for the Genoa defender is expected soon as the Serie A side aim for a fee of $AUD56 million.

However, when asked about the chances of a new centre back arriving in the coming days, Postecoglou sidestepped the question.

“It’s hard to say because I don’t get involved in that side of it,” Postecoglou said in his press conference ahead of Tottenham’s FA Cup clash against Burnley.

“As I said leading into the window, we’ve got some objectives and some targets and we’re working towards that.

“People behind the scenes and in charge of those areas are working towards that and my role within that is when I’m sought for guidance and clarity on which way we need to go, I provide that.”

Although Tottenham appear to be in the driver’s seat in the pursuit of Dragusin, a comment from the player’s agent as well as a report from Sky in Italy suggest a deal won’t be as straightforward as it initially seemed.

The report claims defending Serie A champs Napoli are hoping to nudge in front of Tottenham and have already made a cash-plus-player offer of $AUD32 million and defender Leo Ostigard.

Ostigard and Genoa are no strangers to each other, with the Norwegian spending the second half of the 2021/22 season with the Serie A club.

Whether Genoa are tempted by Napoli’s offer remains to be seen, but comments from Dragusin’s agent would suggest neither last season’s champions or Tottenham will have much of a chance.

Florin Manea, who represents Dragusin, insisted the Romanian “is not thinking” about departing Genoa halfway through the Serie A season and “does not want to leave” just yet.

“He does not think about money, but about prospects for growth and the team he can play for,” Manea told Play TV.

“We were contacted by Saudi Pro League clubs, but he did not even want to listen to their proposals.

“Personally, I have not been contacted by Napoli, Roma or AC Milan.

“In any case, Radu is not thinking about leaving Genoa mid-season, it would be like leaving some unfinished business for him.

“I have had contact with clubs in the Premier League, including Tottenham and others, but at this moment he does not want to leave.”

‘An absolute disgrace’: Ex-PL club slammed over ‘tone deaf’ move as bitter derby clash nears

Sunderland have apologised to furious fans after a bar at their Stadium of Light was redecorated with Newcastle colours ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup clash between the bitter rivals.

Photos emerged on social media on Thursday of new signs in the ‘Black Cats Bar’ showing how it had been redecorated to welcome the corporate hospitality section of Newcastle’s support.

One said “Keep the Black and White Flying High” and “We are United”, while Sunderland’s motto “Ha’way the lads” in red, was replaced with the Newcastle battle-cry, “Howay the lads” in black.

With tensions already running high ahead of the first Tyne-Wear derby since 2016, Sunderland fans were quick to slam their club for the bizarre misjudgment.

One fan group known as The Spirit of 37 declared the banner farce as “tone deaf” and “disgusting” while Sunderland Echo journalist James Copley said it was “an absolute disgrace”.

The Championship side’s owners responded to the criticism by releasing an apologetic statement and promising to remove the Newcastle branding before the third round tie.

“Sunderland AFC acknowledges that a serious error in Judgement was made in relation to Black Cats Bar earlier this afternoon,” the statement said.

“We apologise to our fans for the understandable concern they have fairly voiced in response and this sentiment is shared by the Club’s Ownership Group and Board of Directors, who have requested an immediate review is undertaken to determine how this process unfolded.

“A direct decision has also been taken by the ownership group and board of directors to return the space to its original state and we once again apologise to our supporters that this was not addressed sooner.”

Around 6,000 Newcastle fans will be taken to the Stadium of Light on buses in a police convoy, then given their tickets to the match, in a bid to avoid the violent scenes that have marred previous encounters.

Newcastle haven’t beaten Sunderland since 2011, with Sunderland winning six of the last seven meetings.
