NZ vs PAK, 2024: New Zealand’s best playing XI for the T20I series against Pakistan

The five-match T20I series between Pakistan and New Zealand is poised to kick off on Friday (January 12), commencing with the inaugural game at Eden Park in Auckland.

New Zealand’s recent form and challenges

New Zealand exhibited a commendable performance by clinching the T20I series against Bangladesh at home, albeit facing a rare defeat against them. The return of their regular skipper, Kane Williamson, to the T20I squad after an extended absence is a notable highlight. Williamson, eager to find his form ahead of the fast-approaching T20 World Cup 2024, will aim to swiftly acclimate to the T20 format.

    Captaincy dynamics and squad updates

Star all-rounder Rachin Ravindra has been rested, but the recuperation of Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson from injuries ensures their inclusion in the squad. In the absence of Williamson for the third T20I, Mitchell Santner will take charge, leading the New Zealand side, as they seek to maintain their winning momentum in the series.

Allen’s explosive batting and fearless stroke play make him a potent force at the top, capable of providing quick starts.

Tim Seifert known for his explosive batting provides an extra dimension to the team’s balance, potentially strengthening the middle order. Seifert’s adaptability and aggressive style make him a valuable addition to the Blackcaps side. He is also the key contributor behind the stumps with the gloves.

    Bowlers:

Matt Henry, a genuine pace bowler, uses swing and seam movement to trouble batter. Adam Milne, another express pace bowler, provides an additional firepower option. Ish Sodhi, a skilful leg-spinner, adds variety to the bowling attack. Tim Southee, the experienced campaigner, leads the pace battery with his ability to swing the ball both ways. Together, this quartet forms a potent and well-rounded bowling unit capable of dismantling oppositions.

However, the team’s composition for this series will be different, with several first-choice players being given rest in anticipation of the hectic schedule ahead. Notably, Hardik Pandya, who is leading the side against the West Indies, will not be part of the Ireland series. In addition, players such as Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, who are currently engaged in the Carribean series, will also be absent.

Nevertheless, the Ireland tour will mark the return of India’s pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who will also take on the leadership mantle for the team. Bumrah’s journey back to the field has been marked by multiple attempts to regain full fitness after a severe back injury sidelined him in September 2022. Following a successful back surgery in March of the current year. The 29-year-old has been diligently working on his recovery, including intense bowling practice in recent nets sessions. His fitness has been deemed suitable for the Ireland T20Is. Assisting Bumrah in his leadership role will be Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is set to serve as his deputy.

The India squad showcases a mix of experienced players and emerging talent, with a number of young cricketers earning their spots. The Ireland series will comprise three T20Is played over the course of five days at Malahide Cricket Club Ground, in Dublin.

The forthcoming T20 series holds immense significance for the national side of Ireland too, as it marks their return to T20 action since securing qualification for the next year T20 World Cup. This series is being approached with careful consideration, as it is a crucial element of the strategic planning aimed at preparing the team for the upcoming T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in June 2024.

  • India men’s probable squad for the upcoming Asian Games

India men’s probable squad for the upcoming Asian Games

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that both the Men’s and Women’s cricket teams will participate in the upcoming Asian Games scheduled in Hangzhou, China. The continental event will begin from September 23 to October 8. However, due to a clash with the 2023 ODI World Cup, scheduled to take place in October-November 2023, the men’s team will field a second-choice squad.

The women’s team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, will field their first-choice squad for the Asian Games. In contrast, the men’s team will have to assemble a second-tier squad comprising players who will not be part of the 2023 ODI World Cup squad.

Top stars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya will remain absent from the Asia Cup squad; therefore, the team will see a new captain in the tournament.

Krunal Pandya, who performed exceptionally well as the stand-in captain for his IPL franchise, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), is perhaps the best fit to lead India men’s team at the Asian Games. His all-round skills and international experience make him a valuable asset to guide the young side.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was in top form during the IPL, stands a strong chance of being picked as an opener alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. Other IPL breakout stars such as Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma and Nitish Rana could also be in contention for selection, providing the selectors test them in a high-pressure tournament. Shahrukh Khan, known for his aggressive batting, could fill a spot of the finisher in the Indian side.

Arshdeep Singh, India’s T20 bowling spearhead, pace sensation Umran Malik and young gun Mukesh Kumar are strong contenders as premium fast bowlers for the Asian Games.

In the spin department, the absence of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel may open up opportunities for spin-bowling all-rounders Krunal and Shahbaz Ahmed.

Shivam Dube, who performed well for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), could be the lead pace-bowling all-rounder. Ravi Bishnoi, known for his spin bowling prowess, is likely to be the primary spinner in the squad, along with mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy.

India’s predictable 15-member squad for the Asian Games 2023:

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Nitish Rana, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Rinku Singh, Shahrukh Khan, Krunal Pandya (c), Shahbaz Ahmed, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, Ravi Bishnoi, Shivam Dube, Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Mukesh Kumar, Varun Chakravarthy.

  • Candice Warner reacts to the questions over her husband David’s poor form

Candice Warner reacts to the questions over her husband David’s poor form

Candice, the wife of Australian opener David Warner, has expressed concerns about her husband’s current form. with the bat. She believes that all players in the team need to perform well to succeed and questioned who the selectors would bring in if Warner fails to deliver in the upcoming matches.

Despite Warner struggling for runs, he has been selected for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India and the first two games of the Ashes series. However, his position in the team remains uncertain, with his form being scrutinized since the tour of India earlier this year and the 2019 Ashes campaign on English soil.

While Fox League commentator Dan Ginnane has emphasized the need for Warner to return to form and score runs, Candice believes that all players in the team need to perform well, not just Warner.

She has also pointed out that no one is waiting in line to take his place, which would make it difficult for the selectors to bring in someone better.

“Absolutely, he does. But so does the whole team. If Dave doesn’t perform in that first Test, who do they bring in that’s better?” quizzed Candice.

Warner’s poor form in England has added to the concerns about his selection, with an average of only 26 in Tests in England and no century to his name.

Despite scoring a double-hundred against South Africa in last year’s Boxing Day Test, his position in the team remains in doubt.

Candice clarified that Warner isn’t struggling psychologically, but he might be a bit anxious about facing Stuart Broad, who dismissed him seven out of ten times during the Ashes in 2019.

“His form wasn’t great that last Ashes. Stuart Broad had his number I think ten times. So it didn’t look good for him. And he hasn’t performed well over there in the past. But who do you put in?” added Candice.

She also acknowledged that going to a country where David hasn’t performed well before could create anxiety.

“Mentally, he is fine. You never have to worry about where he’s at mentally. I think going to a country where you haven’t performed before there’s always going to be anxiety, and just thinking about Broad. I’m sure England won’t make the same mistake as they made out here, leaving Broad out of the first Test. I think that was a huge mistake.”

The WTC final is set to begin on June 7, with the Ashes starting on June 16. Warner’s performance in the first Test will be crucial in determining his future in the Australian team.
