SA20 2025 [WATCH]: Quinton de Kock takes a sublime one handed catch to dismiss Jonny Bairstow

Quinton de Kock’s brilliance in the field played a pivotal role in breaking the backbone of Joburg Super Kings‘ innings against Durban Super Giants, as he pulled off an outstanding one-handed catch to dismiss Jonny Bairstow in Match 8 of SA20 2025 on Tuesday (January 14).

Quinton de Kock’s one-handed grab ends Jonny Bairstow’s resistance

Facing Chris Woakes, Bairstow aimed to cut a wide, full delivery through the point region. The ball came off the bat with good pace, but just enough to create an edge. As the ball flew toward De Kock, stationed close behind the stumps, he reacted instinctively. With perfect timing and a quick shift of his weight, De Kock extended his right hand at the last possible moment. Despite the ball traveling with little pace, his outstretched hand snatched it out of the air with incredible control. The one-handed grab, executed with precision and alertness, left everyone in awe, as it halted Bairstow’s promising innings at 26 off 22 balls. This stunning catch not only showcased De Kock’s sharp reflexes and agility but also turned the momentum in the match, putting Super Kings in a challenging position at 120/5.

Joburg Super Kings set the tone against Durban Super Giants in SA20 2025

In the game Super Kings delivered a dominant batting performance, posting a challenging total of 169/7 in their 20 overs. Captain Faf du Plessis fell early to a sharp delivery from Prenelan Subrayen, but Devon Conway (22) and Leus du Plooy (38) steadied the ship with a steady partnership. However, the middle order faced some turbulence as Woakes made crucial breakthroughs,

Despite a mini-collapse, Donovan Ferreira (26) provided some much-needed stability, while David Wiese’s brief cameo added crucial runs. Towards the death, Gerald Coetzee’s explosive 13 off just 3 balls highlighted the Super Kings’ intent to accelerate, ensuring they posted a defendable total. With 14 extras added to their tally, the Kings managed to keep up the momentum. The Super Giants now face a daunting task, needing 119 runs from 83 balls as they reached 50 runs for the loss of two wickets at the end of powerplay. Early breakthroughs from Imran Tahir and David Wiese have kept the pressure mounting, giving the Super Kings the upper hand in this crucial encounter.

  • Pakistan-origin England cricketer encounters visa hurdles jeopardizing his participation in the T20I series against India

Pakistan-origin England cricketer encounters visa hurdles jeopardizing his participation in the T20I series against India

The cricketing world is abuzz with the latest developments surrounding England‘s Pakistan-origin pacer, Saqib Mahmood, as he faces significant visa issues just days before the much-anticipated T20I series against India. Scheduled to commence on January 22 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, Mahmood’s participation in this crucial tour hangs in the balance due to administrative hurdles that have left him stranded in England.

Saqib Mahmood’s flight cancelation amid the visa dilemma

According to reports by The Daily Mail, Mahmood was expected to join his teammates in the UAE for a preparatory camp, where they would acclimatize to conditions under the guidance of fast bowling mentor James Anderson. However, his flight was cancelled as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) reported that his passport remains with the Indian embassy, preventing him from traveling. This situation has left the 27-year-old unable to train effectively in the freezing conditions of England, where he has been unable to bowl and prepare adequately for the upcoming matches.

The ECB has not yet released an official statement regarding Mahmood’s visa status, and it remains uncertain when he will be able to join the squad. With only a week remaining until the team’s departure for India, this predicament raises concerns about his readiness and fitness for the series.

    A pattern of visa issues

Unfortunately, Mahmood’s current situation is not an isolated incident. He has previously faced visa-related challenges during tours to India. Last year, while playing for Lancashire, he was unable to secure a visa in time, leading to his exclusion from the tour. Similarly, in 2019, he missed out on joining the England Lions squad due to visa complications. These recurring issues highlight a troubling pattern for cricketers of Pakistani heritage attempting to enter India for cricketing engagements.

The last tour of India saw other players facing similar obstacles. Shoaib Bashir had to return to London to sort out his visa issues before participating in a Test match. Additionally, Rehan Ahmed encountered problems with a single-entry visa that delayed his entry into India during a recent series. Such incidents not only disrupt team dynamics but also create frustration among players and management alike.

Mahmood: A crucial asset for England

Mahmood’s absence would be a significant blow for England’s bowling attack. He has made a notable impact in T20I cricket, having played 18 matches and taken 18 wickets at an average of 30.61. His performance includes a four-wicket haul and an economy rate of 9.33 runs per over. Furthermore, he is also part of England’s ODI squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, showcasing his importance within the team structure.

Despite these statistics, Mahmood has yet to face India at any level on the international stage. His potential debut against such a formidable opponent would mark a significant milestone in his career and further solidify his place within the national team.

A cryptic New Year tweet from Gujarat Titans (GT) has ignited speculation about a potential change in the team’s leadership for the IPL 2025 season. While Shubman Gill is widely expected to continue as captain, the tweet featuring Rashid Khan has fans wondering if the franchise is planning a surprising announcement.

The tweet, posted on the official GT handle, included a photo of Rashid Khan alongside the text, “The 2025 GT Story,” and was captioned, “A Clean Slate. A New Story.” This intriguing post has left fans buzzing with excitement, flooding the comments section with reactions and theories.

Adding fuel to the rumours is Rashid’s status as the franchise’s highest retention ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. Rashid’s immense value to the team, both as a bowler and a leader, makes him a strong candidate for the captaincy.

This marked a sharp decline from their stellar debut in 2022, where they won the IPL title under Hardik Pandya. In 2023, they came close again, finishing as runners-up after a final-over defeat against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

    • Date and Time: December 5: 11:30 am GMT / 1:30 pm local/ 5:00 pm IST
    • Venue: Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo

    Queens Sports Club Pitch Report:

The Queens Sports Club is anticipated to initially benefit fast bowlers, with significant swing and subtle seam movement expected during the morning session. As the day progresses and the pitch dries in the sunlight, it is likely to provide consistent pace and bounce, making it easier for teams batting second to score runs. Spinners may find some grip and turn during the middle overs, but overall conditions are expected to favour batters as the match unfolds. For pacers to maintain their effectiveness with an older ball, employing cutters and focusing on hard lengths will be crucial in the later stages of the game.
