Three ways England could line-up in first game under Thomas Tuchel

The first major question surrounding Thomas Tuchel as England manager has been answered.

Tuchel named his first 26-man squad since taking over as Three Lions boss on Friday, with a number of surprise inclusions and omissions.

With the squad now in place, attention shifts towards how Tuchel’s team will line-up and the tactics he may use.

Most modern managers take a fluid and flexible approach to how they set their teams up so a mid-game change in formation is not overly disruptive to their style of play.

Tuchel has used a variety of formations over the course of his career, but there are three he’s used more than most: 4-2-3-1, 3-4-2-1 and 4-3-3.

Speaking last Friday, Tuchel was coy on whether he would operate with a back four or a back five but stated his team’s style of play ‘needs to reflect the Premier League.’

“We should not try to copy other nations or other styles,” Tuchel said.

“It just reflect the values of the country with the strongest league in the world.

“We will try to implement a direct, attacking style and we will try to increase the rhythm and intensity of our game.

“We will try to do this in a crash course on Monday and unleash the potential on Friday.”

Here, talkSPORT.com breaks down how Tuchel’s England side could line up for each of the three formations ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifier against Albania on Friday, live on talkSPORT.

Remember, these are the predicted line-ups for just the Albania fixture and not for the World Cup itself, so bear with us as we explain the rationale behind the selections.

There's plenty of intrigue as to how Tuchel will set his team up against Albania

    4-2-3-1

The 4-2-3-1 is Tuchel’s go-to formation and was what he used for the majority of his most recent managerial stint at Bayern Munich.

With the two midfield pivots, it offers defensive solidity and allows a midfielder to roam further forward and operate between the lines.

We start at the back and Jordan Pickford is a shoo-in to reprise his role as England’s no.1 goalkeeper.

At left-back, things become a little interesting given the lack of out-and-out left-backs in the squad due to a number of injuries.

Myles Lewis-Skelly, a midfielder by trade but converted into a left-back under Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, stands a strong chance of making his England debut.

Carabao Cup final hero Dan Burn, as well as Levi Colwill and Tino Livramento are also all capable of playing at left-back, but given Lewis-Skelly has featured in the position consistently, he looks likely to get the nod.

Lewis-Skelly is primed to make his senior international debut

    9

Lewis-Skelly is primed to make his senior international debut

At right centre-back, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi is nailed on to feature given he has started in 12 of England’s last 15 fixtures.

As for Guehi’s partner at left centre-back, Colwill and Burn loom as the likely candidates.

But given Colwill’s experience – albeit brief – at international level and having played next to Guehi previously, it is the safe option for Tuchel in his first match.

Though there could be a temptation to select hero of the hour for Newcastle in Burn, who scored the opening goal in the win over Liverpool at Wembley.

Kyle Walker, who has 93 England caps, is another sensible choice for Tuchel. Although he may not possess the same bursts of speed he used to, the 34-year-old AC Milan defender adds plenty of experience and will be a wise head to help the backline carry out Tuchel’s instructions.

Stay with us on the theme of experience, because it explains one of our selections in the midfield pivot.

talkSPORT react to Thomas Tuchel naming his first England squad

Jordan Henderson‘s inclusion caused plenty of uproar given his last England cap was against Malta in November 2023, but Tuchel’s comments regarding the Ajax midfielder showed just how highly he rates him.

Tuchel waxed lyrical about Henderson’s ‘character, personality and energy’ and added those qualities are ‘a big piece in that puzzle’.

With Tuchel’s quotes in mind, it gives credence to the idea Henderson will start in the first match of his England tenure over Curtis Jones.

Partnering Henderson in the midfield pivot will be Declan Rice, who has been an ever-present in the England line-up.

We then move on to those who will make up England’s attacking unit.

Jude Bellingham is the logical choice to play as the attacking midfielder given he played there in England’s last three fixtures.

Henderson's inclusion was the most divisive among fans last Friday

    9

Cole Palmer would have been a strong chance to start on the right wing, but given he missed Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday through injury, it’s looking certain the midfield dynamo will feature against Albania.

Palmer’s injury opens the door for Manchester City’s Phil Foden to start.

Foden has primarily played on the left or as an attacking midfielder for England but given he has featured heavily on the right wing for City this term, Tuchel may give him the chance to show his worth.

On the left, Aston Villa’s Marcus Rashford looks primed for his first international minutes in almost a year.

When speaking about Rashford’s inclusion, Tuchel was ‘delighted’ to see the winger’s ‘consistent energy in defence’ for Villa.

Tuchel added he hopes Rashford’s call-up gives him ‘the extra push’ to stay at that level, so it only makes sense for the 27-year-old to show his qualities against Albania from the start.

It goes without saying England skipper Harry Kane will start up top.

A 4-2-3-1 seems to be the safe bet in terms of Tuchel's first formation as England boss

    9

A 4-2-3-1 seems to be the safe bet in terms of Tuchel’s first formation as England boss

    3-4-2-1

Chelsea fans will know all about Tuchel’s 3-4-2-1 formation as it was his go-to during his stint at Stamford Bridge.

At times the formation would be tweaked to 3-4-1-2 whenever Tuchel wanted extra firepower up top.

Before we get to the re-jigged defensive line, we start in goal and Pickford is once again the likeliest candidate to start between the sticks.

The left wing-back role could suit Lewis-Skelly’s skill-set even more than the regular left-back position given he enjoys getting forward at the appropriate opportunity.

Guehi is an easy choice to start in the middle of the back three, while Colwill is a solid candidate to feature on the left side.

As for the right centre-back, Walker has experience in the position at international level having played there as recently as Euro 2024.

Colwill has four England caps but stands a strong chance of adding to that

    9

With Walker shifting into the back three, it opens up the right wing-back role.

Reece James, who Tuchel knows well from his stint at Stamford Bridge, is a strong shout for a starting berth if the German goes for a back three or back five, depending on how you want to look at things.

James is a right-back by trade but has recently featured as a defensive midfielder for Chelsea.

However, his familiarity with Tuchel gives him the edge over fellow right-back Livramento.

Henderson and Rice will play as the midfield two thanks to their boundless energy to get across the field and maintain possession.

Foden and Bellingham will feature as the attacking midfield pair and dominate the central areas, allowing for Lewis-Skelly and James to operate in dangerous positions higher up the field.

The pairing of Foden and Bellingham will be music to Kane’s ears, with the duo to create plenty of chances for the Three Lions skipper to feed off.

Could a return to a back three bring the best out of England under Tuchel?

    9

Could a return to a back three bring the best out of England under Tuchel?

    4-3-3

The other formation Tuchel has favoured is the 4-3-3, which he often used at Paris Saint-Germain.

A formation widely adopted across the world, it offers plenty of balance and control in midfield.

Luckily for Tuchel and England, it is an area of the field in which they have plenty of quality.

Similarly to the 4-2-3-1 formation, a back four of Lewis-Skelly, Colwill, Guehi and Walker will protect Pickford in goal.

With the midfield three, Rice will act as the anchor while Henderson provides box-to-box cover.

Joining them in the engine room will be Bellingham, who will be the more attacking of the three.

Rice has become a vital cog in England's midfield since his debut in March 2019

    9

Rice has become a vital cog in England’s midfield since his debut in March 2019

Although Bellingham tends to operate further forward, he played as part of a midfield trio several times for England at Euro 2024.

That leaves us with the front three and it makes sense for those named in the predicted 4-2-3-1 line-up to return here, so Rashford and Foden slot in on the left and right wing respectively.

As is the case with the other two formations, Kane will start up top.

Regardless of how Tuchel’s side lines up and who starts against Albania, it will no doubt give us plenty of insights into what we should come to expect from the Three Lions under the German.

In turn, Tuchel will get an early sense of who might – and might not – be strong contenders to be on the plane to next year’s World Cup.

A 4-3-3 would represent somewhat of a surprise choice of formation for Tuchel

  • Chelsea title credentials were summed up by one person and it wasn’t Cole Palmer

Chelsea title credentials were summed up by one person and it wasn’t Cole Palmer

Marc Cucurella will do anything to win the ball, anything to win the game even, and he did it through fair means and foul here at Stamford Bridge against Brentford.

He was man of the match and sent off. He was goalscorer and goal preventer. When you have players as committed to defeating the opposition as Cucurella then Chelsea must be considered in the Premier League title race, especially as their A-team benefits from being rested in Europe.

    5

“We’ve got our Chelsea back,” Chelsea fans chanted as Liverpool and Arsenal supporters watched from afar. It’s still early days but they certainly have some of that old winning mentality back.

Only the rash would compare them to fine Chelsea sides of old but there was a togetherness that echoed some of the more successful sides at the Bridge.

There was a will to win that defined those sides, and was embodied by Cucurella, Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill. Supporters here have been singing about getting their Chelsea back for a couple of weeks but their chorus carried more intensity and belief.

Cucurella could win awards for most effective, most determined, most athletic and most annoying player of the weekend. His heat map resembled a line of fire along the left.

The 26-year-old was everywhere up and down that flank, racing back and forth, even scoring Chelsea’s first. Three minutes from time, Cucurella even threw himself through the air to beat Bryan Mbeumo to the ball in central midfield. He also did everything to run down the clock during the seven added minutes.

He fouled Fabio Carvalho to prevent an attack and eat up a few seconds. He made two vital clearances and then very deliberately and cynically stayed down after an innocuous challenge by Sepp van den Berg. As 3,000 Brentford fans booed, the moody Blue climbed to his feet, bravely recovered, and saw out the final few seconds. His celebrations were understandably pretty wild at the final whistle, but then childish as he argued with Schade, and received a second yellow. He’s now suspended for Everton away.

They will miss him. His mentality, however graceless at times, is why Chelsea have to be considered contenders for the title, even if everyone here says publicly they are still evolving, and to give them another season before being deemed genuine candidates. Nonsense. If Arsenal are rightly considered still in the frame, then so must Chelsea be, and Chelsea have a centre-forward.

Nicolas Jackson and company are four points clear of Arsenal and only two points behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand. Chelsea have quality in reserve, and are able to bring on the prolific Christopher Nkunku for Jackson. Pedro Neto was suspended but Noni Madueke stepped up and, following a slow start, was an influence.

There is a returning buzz about the Bridge. Chelsea fans are loving the maturity and menace of their football.

Chelsea were patient in breaking down Brentford, who were 5-4-1 out of possession, occasionally a back-six with Christian Norgaard dropping into the back-line. Chelsea stayed calm, and looked to stretch the visitors.

Enzo Maresca’s wingers, Jadon Sancho and slowly Madueke, provided some of the width but it was really his full-backs who caused Brentford most problems.

Maresca’s tactics place huge demands on his full-backs, defending and attacking. Immediately, they pushed up, the right-sided Malo Gusto delivering a cross that Jackson headed wide with Cucurella closeby hunting scraps.

All the talk was of the two leading scorers in the Premier League perhaps sharing a goalfest but the defences impressed. Ethan Pinnock again excelled for Brentford, who held out well for 42 minutes. But here was another reason why there should be confidence at the Bridge for sustained involvement in the title race.

Colwill continued to confirm what an important and improving centre-back he is for Chelsea. He read danger, calmly stepping in front of Mbuemo to intercept, and throwing himself into a block to deny Mikkel Damsgaard. Tosin Adarabioyo saw off a ground attack from Yoane Wissa, then leapt to deal with a Pinnock long throw special.

Chelsea deserved the lead, created by Madueke’s cross from the right and finished by Cucurella, who simply wanted to reach the ball more than Mads Roerslev. And then it was back to Chelsea’s defence catching the eye.

Robert Sanchez has been seen as a weak link but he commanded his area well here, catching Mbuemo’s free-kick. He varied his distribution well, confusing Brentford. He drilled a long ball down the middle to Jackson, then played the next one short to Cucurella, earning a thumbs up from Maresca. Sanchez tipped over Damsgaard’s volley and was then relieved when Carvalho’s effort hit the bar.

Chelsea played rope-a-dope, absorbing Brentford’s combinations, then hitting on the counter. Jackson raced 60 yards down the inside-right channel, ignoring the option of Cole Palmer on the left, before sliding the ball between Mark Flekken and his upright.

There were a few nerves when Schade sent Mbeumo through and he neatly placed his finish low past Sanchez. But Cucurella simply closed the game down.

Leicester confirm Van Nistelrooy hire on anniversary of Vardy beating his record

Leicester City have announced Ruud van Nistelrooy as their new manager.

Van Nistelrooy replaces Steve Cooper, who was sacked days after the Foxes’ 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.

The Dutchman has signed a contract to 2027 and will be in the stands for Saturday’s clash with Brentford.

His first match in charge will be on Tuesday night when the Foxes host West Ham in the Premier League.

Speaking to Leicester’s club website, Van Nistelrooy said: “I’m proud, I’m excited. Everybody that I speak to about Leicester City Football Club is enthusiastic.

“They have great stories about the quality of the people working at the Club, the supporters and, of course, the recent history of the Club is impressive.

“I’m excited to start and to get to know everyone and give everything I can for the Football Club.”

Leicester City chairman, Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, said: “It is my pleasure to welcome Ruud to Leicester City.

“He joins a Club with a rich history, passionate supporters, and a talented squad, and we are all excited to see the impact he can have as we embark on this new chapter together.

“Ruud’s experience, knowledge, and winning mentality will undoubtedly bring great value to us, and we look forward to supporting him in achieving success for our fans and our Club.”

He takes over with the Foxes sitting 16th in the Premier League on 10 points, one point away from the relegation zone.

Leicester’s Van Nistelrooy announcement comes on the same week where Jamie Vardy broke the Dutchman’s record for the longest consecutive goal-scoring streak in the Premier League nine years ago.

Vardy eclipsed Van Nistelrooy’s mark of ten when he smashed home his 11th goal against Manchester United during the Foxes’ legendary 2015/16 when they won the Premier League title.

Van Nistelrooy will now get the opportunity to see what makes Vardy tick up close, with the Leicester job marking the third permanent role of his managerial career.

He succeeded Mark van Bommel as PSV Eindhoven’s Under-19 team in June 2018 but was promoted to first team manager in March 2022.

The former Manchester United marksman won 33 of his 51 games in charge as he led PSV to the KNVB Cup and Johan Cruyff Shield in the 2022/23 season.

However, he resigned from his post at PSV with one game remaining in the Eredivisie that term due to frustrations regarding a lack of support from above.

Van Nistelrooy made an emotional return to Old Trafford in July as he appointed an assistant coach to Erik ten Hag.

But it failed to be a fruitful partnership as Ten Hag was sacked on October 28 after he oversaw the Red Devils’ worst-ever start to a Premier League season.

Van Nistelrooy was subsequently named as United’s interim head coach while the club searched and didn’t disappoint from his four games in charge.

Ironically, Van Nistelrooy’s first game in charge was against Leicester in the EFL Cup as United ran rampant in a 5-2 victory.

Van Nistelrooy followed it up with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea before he oversaw United’s first European victory in 13 months as they beat Greek side PAOK 2-0.

In another twist of fate, Van Nistelrooy signed off on his interim stint with a 3-0 win over Leicester in the Premier League.

Unfortunately for Van Nistelrooy, the victory over the Foxes proved to be his final act at United after new boss Ruben Amorim elected not to keep the Dutchman on his new coaching staff.

Simon Jordan reacts to Alex Crook’s latest update on Leciester City’s manager hunt

“To everyone at Manchester United Football Club, in particular the backroom staff, the players and the fans,” Van Nistelrooy wrote on Instagram.

“I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your incredible efforts and support. It has been a privilege and honour to represent the club as a player, coach and manager, and I will always cherish the memories we have shared together.

“M.U.F.C will always have a special place in my heart, and I hope there are many more glory days at Old Trafford very soon – not only because I want the club to do well, but because you all deserve it!

“All the best and take care, Ruud.”

Slot and Liverpool show ‘signs of champions’ – but hope remains for rivals

Liverpool can go 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League with a win over Manchester City.

The Anfield showdown between the Premier League heavyweights, on Sunday, is one of the most eagerly awaited games of the season.

    7

But despite the Reds’ superior form in Arne Slot’s first season in charge since replacing Jurgen Klopp, they still can’t rest on their laurels.

That’s the view of Arsenal legend Martin Keown, who believes the Gunners and Manchester City are still capable of toppling Liverpool off the top of the tree, despite their respective rocky starts.

Before a ball had been kicked in the Premier League this season, many had expected the title battle of the last two campaigns between Man City and Arsenal to continue.

Instead, it’s Liverpool breaking away from the rest of the pack, with City’s bright start stalling after five defeats in a row – the latest being a 4-0 thrashing at home to Tottenham.

Then there was the three-goal lead they gave away against Feyenoord in the Champions League to make it six games without a win.

Arsenal, meanwhile, sit in fourth, level on points with third place Chelsea, who are also thriving under new manager Enzo Maresca.

Expectations had been higher than ever heading into this season for the Gunners to be pushing for their first title since 2004 after coming agonisingly close in the past two campaigns.

Keown was part of that Premier League winning squad, with Arsene Wenger’s side the only club besides Blackburn to disrupt Manchester United’s dominance from the League’s inception in 1993 to the mid-2000s.

Arsenal won the league in 1998, 2002 and again in 2004.

However, 20 years and a stadium move later, Gunners fans are still waiting to see their side lift the Premier League trophy again.

Here's how the table looks going into match day 13

    7

Here’s how the table looks going into match day 13

And although Liverpool are seemingly unstoppable right now, there’s still a long way to go.

But what has Slot done so well?

    Slotting right in

Under the Dutchman, Liverpool have drawn and lost twice since taking over from Klopp, who in 2020 delivered the club a first league trophy since 1989.

“Jurgen Klopp definitely put the foundations in place,” Keown said, reflecting on Liverpool’s strong start.

“I think it’s when you go into a football club, it’d be very easy for [Slot] to have been the one on trial. It doesn’t look that way. It looks like the players are on trial.

“I’m even looking at [Andy] Robertson and thinking he’s still on trial, but he’s still picking him.

He's amassed more league goal contributions this season, scoring the same amount but registering two more assists

    7

He’s amassed more league goal contributions this season, scoring the same amount but registering two more assists

“But he’s getting the best out of everybody.”

Star winger Mohamed Salah sent shock waves across the Liverpool fan base ahead of the win over Real Madrid by revealing he was ‘more out than in’ in terms of signing a new deal.

His current contract expires at the end of the season, and Saudi Pro League clubs are circling.

But thus far, Slot has been able to keep worries about the ‘Egyptian King’ under control. He’s currently the second highest goalscorer in the league this term with 10 goals – two behind Man City’s Erling Haaland.

“But he’s playing angry and [Slot] is bringing the best out of Salah,” Keown added.

“He’s proven he can cope with the sort of uncertainty of what could happen in the future. He’ll be fine wherever he ends up. Liverpool fans would dearly love to see him stay there. So he’s created the right mix, but the foundation is definitely Klopp.

Martin Keown claims that Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard is the most important player in the Premier League and more vital than Cole Palmer is for Chelsea

“And Klopp was rebuilding another team here and for whatever reason got tired or fatigued and wanted to step away.

“And sometimes when a great leader like that, who is very demanding and wants things done at 100 miles an hour, the next guy comes in. There’s a calmness and I can sense that.

“And it doesn’t look laboured for everybody else, for City, for Arsenal, their competitors, it looks a grind, looks like really difficult.

“But for Liverpool, they’re comfortable. And even when, you know, Southampton handed it on a plate, they were there to cash in and that’s the sign of champions.”

In Keown’s mind, the race is far from over.

    Gunner be tight

When asked what his beloved Gunners can do to close the gap, rather than focusing on areas they need to improve when the transfer window opens, Keown suggested Arsenal’s 3-0 victory against Nottingham Forest last time out needs to be the catalyst for a great run of form.

Keown is keeping the faith for Arsenal

    7

“They need to win seven or eight games before [January].

“That’s what you have to do. Simple as that. You have to go on one of these really outstanding runs.

“The Forest game was one to shut out the noise. Obviously you’re looking at it and seeing there’s lots of injuries, lots of suspensions, lots of away games.

“I mean, Arsenal at the moment are in a sequence of seven games where only one of them is at home.

“And so you look at it and you think about Liverpool’s fixtures but you all play the same teams. Even this one now for Liverpool – Man City – it’s a beautiful time for Liverpool to play Man City.

“But it might just be an incredible moment for City to strike back. So, Arsenal just need to go on a run, keep healthy and have everybody available. Some players were rested at the weekend.

Some Arsenal fans want the club to buy a number nine, with the goals currently spread amongst the team

    7

Some Arsenal fans want the club to buy a number nine, with the goals currently spread amongst the team

“I think it was great to have us get a rest and hope, I suppose, that Liverpool start to ship points.

“They don’t seem to be having any problems right now. And they have won a Premier League in recent times. The nucleus of that team, certainly the back four and [Mohamed] Salah, is a Premier League winning team.”

    Bigger than Rodri

Guardiola had never lost five games in a row as a manger before City were mauled by a rampant Spurs last weekend.

Man City lost 2024 Ballon d’Or winner and midfielder Rodri to an Anterior cruciate ligament injury at the end of September.

They then won six out of seven games, before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Spurs in the League Cup. Losses to Bournemouth, Sporting Lisbon, Brighton and again to Spurs followed.

Asked if you can pin Man City’s dire form on losing Rodri, Keown said: “No, it can’t always be just about one player, you know. But you saw them at the weekend and it’s just… Where their defenders were so secure all of last year, never made a mistake, first to the ball.

City dearly miss Rodri, but their form is not down to one absence alone

    7

“Josko Gvardiol, ball into the channel, but he’s kind of doubting himself. Whereas last year, he’d have put his foot through it.

“Kyle Walker, blessed with pace. But if you don’t press the go button to sprint, doesn’t matter who you are, you’re not going to go quick enough, early enough. And that looked like what’s happening. Maybe they’re overthinking it too much now.”

After the Invincibles success in 2003/04, Keown knows what it’s like to be in a team not used to losing.

And he thinks City are now being put through something a lot of their players won’t be equipped to cope with initially.

“When you are winning every week everyone on the outside looks and says, oh, you’re amazing.

“We had this with the Invincibles and other seasons where we went unbeaten for a large period.

It's not going right for Guardiola but he has the tools to turn it around

    7

“On the inside, I remember speaking to [manager] Arsene Wenger and he was saying, ‘Look, if we lose a game, you know…’, [City] are not so used to losing.

“Because when you are winning, your chest is out, you’re proud, you know, we’re unbeatable. And then when that goes, it can disappear, it can fall apart. And I think that’s where they are right now.

“So their excellence in the past has affected how they recover, you know, because the building is like a morgue.

“It’s like no one’s used to losing. I learned this when I went to Leicester and I went to Reading.

“There are players there that have had, you know, slip ups. You know, it’s almost like a major event when you lose a game. It’s an occupational hazard everywhere else. But at big clubs, it doesn’t happen.

“So I expect them to jump out of this and they’ve got the tools to do that. Pep is an outstanding manager.”

Amorim must make brutal Rashford call and turn misfiring star into Gyokeres

It is the dawn of the latest new era at Manchester United with Ruben Amorim touching down in the UK this week to start work as the club’s first ever head coach.

Fresh from finishing a lowly eighth last season, Erik ten Hag paid the price for the club’s worst ever start to a Premier League campaign with his job, so how can Amorim succeed where everyone else post Sir Alex Ferguson has failed?

Even in the aftermath of May’s FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City – undoubtedly United’s greatest day of the post-Fergie era – the questions marks over Ten Hag’s philosophy (or lack of) remained.

The truth is that white knuckle cup ride, which included a barely believable extra-time win over arch-rivals Liverpool and almost being knocked out in the semis by Coventry despite leading 3-0 with 19 minutes of normal time to go, summed up United’s inability to dominate games the way they had in their illustrious past.

    Read more Man United news

Even in the final itself, which many labelled a tactical masterclass, United had a little over 25 per cent possession against the team Ferguson famously branded ‘the noisy neighbours’.

As so often under Ten Hag, who was recruited partly because of the possession-based game he was able to deploy so successfully at Ajax, the Red Devils relied on moments of individual brilliance and hitting City on the counter attack as a route to glory.

Ten Hag tried to change that this summer and the early signs were good as United enjoyed greater control and played fewer direct passes, opting instead to build from the back, in their penalty shoot-out defeat against City back at Wembley.

But after losing at Brighton in their second league game, any sign of an identity quickly went out of the window again, with huge gaps appearing in midfield and the opposition allowed to dictate the flow of matches.

Like Ten Hag, Amorim arrives with a defined high-energy playing style, and part of the reason Liverpool opted against pursuing their interest in him was because they didn’t feel his 3-4-3 formation would suit their squad. Unlike Ten Hag, the 39-year-old has to be brave enough to stick with his principles.

    CUT THE DEADWOOD

The fact there are players on the United books who have survived three or four managers should be a massive red flag to Amorim.

While offloading under-performing big earners like Marcus Rashford will be very difficult, a much-needed summer clear-out will be helped by the fact that Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Christian Eriksen and Jonny Evans are all out of contract at the end of the season and should all be let go.

Casemiro has enjoyed an upturn in performance level under caretaker-manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, but is hard to envisage the veteran Brazilian being able to meet the rigorous physical demands that Amorim places on his charges.

Luke Shaw conveniently returned to training soon after ten Hag had departed, but cannot be relied upon to stay fit so is another that should be moved on, while there are already big question marks from within the corridors of Carrington over £36.5million summer recruit Joshua Zirkzee being cut out for the Premier League.

Rashford is a fascinating case study; a player who initially excelled under Ten Hag and enjoyed the best scoring season of his career before the relationship deteriorated to such an extent that sources say the pair were barely on speaking terms by the end.

England outcast Rashford is said to be enthused by the prospect of working with Amorim, but recent performances suggest he is a very long way from being back to his best and if that doesn’t change quickly then United may have a brutal decision to make with their academy poster boy.

When fully fit Mason Mount looks perfectly suited to playing alongside Bruno Fernandes as one of the two number 10s behind a lone number 9, but he really needs a run of games between now and the end of the season to salvage what has so far been a disastrous move from Chelsea.

talkSPORT has already revealed that the £80m Antony has been told his future is elsewhere and he could depart as early as January, albeit a loan move back to the Dutch league or his native Brazil looks the most likely scenario.

TURN RASMUS HOJLUND INTO GYOKERES ‘2.0’

There is no better illustration of how far United’s star has fallen than the fact that even after Sunday’s 3-0 win over Leicester they have still scored only TWELVE goals in ELEVEN Premier League games. That’s the same number as Erling Haaland alone and fewer than Wolves and Leicester.

However, it is not like this is a team who struggle to create chances. In fact they have spurned more big opportunities than any of the other 19 clubs.

In contrast Amorim’s Sporting team plundered 39 goals in their first 11 league games – all wins – and hit four past Manchester City in the Champions League. He also turned Viktor Gyokeres – deemed surplus to requirements by Brighton – into one of Europe’s most sought-after strikers with clubs including Chelsea and Arsenal keen to bring him back to England next summer.

The United hierarchy will hope he can have the same impact on Rasmus Hojlund, who has netted just twice in his 12 appearances this season.

With United another potential suitor for Gyokeres, although their recruitment will be led by sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox and not Amorim himself, the pressure is on Hojlund to start finding the net on a consistent basis.

Since the start of the 23/24 season, Gyokeres and Hojlund have vastly different goal and assist hauls

    TARGET THE EUROPA LEAGUE

There may only be four points separating 13th placed United and Chelsea in third but the quality level in the top half of the table has arguably never been so high.

It is almost impossible to see a scenario where leaders Liverpool and champions City, even taking their current wobble into account, don’t finish in the top four so the battle for the two, maybe three depending on the success of English teams in Europe, other Champions League places is going to be fierce.

While improving last season’s worst ever Premier League finish is one of the main priorities with so many games still to play, winning the Europa League may offer an easier route to a seat back at Europe’s top table.

After ending a year-long wait for a European win by beating Greek minnows PAOK 2-0 last week, United have a very winnable set of games coming up at the start of Amorim’s tenure and should easily finish in the top eight to go straight into the last 16.

The new UEFA format also means they do not have to contend with teams dropping down from the Champions League so it is no surprise that United and Tottenham, flaky away from home, are the top two favourites to lift the trophy.

Amorim led Sporting to the quarter finals in 2023, knocking out Arsenal in the round of 16 so knows his way around the competition United last won under his mentor Jose Mourinho seven years ago.

Hollywood star defends Arteta from dark arts claim but details frustrating issue

Mikel Arteta has been accused of employing the “dark arts” this season.

Opposition teams have become frustrated with Arsenal over delays from set-pieces and goal kicks, as well as other efforts to take the sting out of games they are winning.

Arteta was heavily criticised for the way he set his team up during a clash with Premier League title-chasing rivals Manchester City in September.

Leandro Trossard was sent off in the first half, and the north London side came out after the break looking to protect their 2-1 lead.

A number of Arsenal stars went to ground and called for treatment during the second half, with the likes of David Raya, Riccardo Calafiori, Gabriel Martinelli and Jurrien Timber later accused of deliberately breaking up play.

If they were trying to waste time, their efforts were in vain, as City grabbed a 98th-minute equaliser to ensure the points were shared thanks to John Stones.

Post-match, the defender went on to suggest Arsenal had used “the dark arts” for a few years now.

That is a claim that Arteta has rejected, arguing his players have not been faking injuries or wasting time.

Regardless, there is no doubt his tactics at times this season have been causing a stir, but according to one Hollywood star, that isn’t a bad thing.

Will Poulter, who has starred in movies including The Maze Runner, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Midsommar, as well as hit TV show The Bear, is a big Arsenal fan.

He recently appeared on the US Overlap podcast to discuss the club’s efforts so far this season.

“I take issue with people having a pop of us for maybe being boring, when we have had to emphasise a defensive approach,” Poulter said.

“For 10 years, I heard people saying Arsenal were soft, that we needed to embrace the dark arts and we didn’t have that gritty edge, didn’t know when to sit in.”

While the actor clearly believes defensive tactics have been beneficial for the club, he shared frustration that the Gunners have not been able to capitalise on rivals City slipping this season, with Liverpool now sitting top of the league.

“The season does feel a bit different in respect of how many points you might expect teams to drop,” he continued.

“City losing four games in a row, that shocks me as much as it delights me, but I think we are going to see teams drop points over the course of the season.

“It does upset me that we haven’t capitalised. Historically there are times where you want Arsenal to go for the jugular with someone who has dropped points, and we haven’t.

“Great teams – who win back-to-back championships – do that. They handle the pressure of that.

Arne Slot is our most entertaining coach for 35 years – he thinks like Pep

Arne Slot has is the Netherland’s most entertaining coach in 35 years and Liverpool fans are in for a treat.

Slot is now the Reds’ new head coach, replacing the long-serving Jurgen Klopp, who stepped down from his role at the end of last season.

The 45-year-old arrives at Anfield with an exciting reputation having won the league and Dutch Cup with Feyenoord and is a coach who thinks like Pep Guardiola, according to Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan, who has followed his career closely.

As well as his perfect communication skills, he told talkSPORT: “He’s also got very fresh ideas and maybe even excels [Erik] Ten Hag in his ideas of attacking football.

“He is closer in his thinking to Pep. I’m not saying he’s on the same level, I don’t want Liverpool fans to think, ‘Oh Marcel’s telling us we’re getting Pep 2.0.’

“But I’ve never seen a game of him where he played one minute defensive football, or where he wanted his team to defend something, it’s actually been mind blowing what he’s done in Holland.

“I’m not saying that he will be in England but in Holland, he’s the most entertaining coach I’ve seen over the last 35 years. I actually think that, apart from Pep of course in the same city, Arne Slot could be Erik ten Hag’s biggest rival when it comes to competing for places in the Champions League next season.”

Slot is set to rival his compatriot Ten Hag for a Premier League top four finish, with the latter already winning two trophies in as many seasons at United.

However, when talkSPORT host Jim White asked if Slot will be more successful at Liverpool than Ten Hag next season, Van der Kraan said: “Yes.

“His football… like [co-host Simon Jordan], I’m a fan of the 70’s, I loved Holland in the 70’s, 1974, 1988, Ruud Gullit, Arnold Muhren, you mentioned earlier in the break, the cross to [Marco] van Basten, we had great players.

“But they all wanted to play really Dutch, flowing football and this is what you want from coaches, that’s how you want them to play.

Arne Slot reveals that he had Liverpool fans signing outside his house after Jurgen Klopp created his new chant

“And if Arne Slot will do what he’s done so far in his career in the Netherlands, how he turned Feyenoord around from like a hard-working port workers’ club into a flowing football machine…

“What I wish, without being biased on Arne or Erik, I wish that Liverpool fans will get that because it will show a bit of colour for the Dutch again, what our coaches can do.”

Slot’s first Premier League match in charge at Liverpool comes on August 17 away at newly-promoted Ipswich Town, live on talkSPORT.

Liverpool hold talks with target who is keen to succeed Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool have held talks with representatives of Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim, talkSPORT understands.

Amorim has made it clear he is keen to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, with the German leaving at the end of the season.

The Reds are due to carry out a formal interview process this month.

Xabi Alonso was the leading contender for the role amid an impressive season with Bayer Leverkusen, who are unbeaten.

However, the former Liverpool midfielder pulled himself out of the running by committing his future to Leverkusen.

Since then, Amorim has quickly emerged as the new frontrunner for the job ahead of the summer.

The 39-year-old has Sporting sitting top of Liga Portugal and four points ahead of rivals Benfica with a game in hand, and won the league title with them in 2021.

Barcelona and Bayern Munich have also held interest, with Xavi and Thomas Tuchel both leaving their respective clubs this summer.

Amorim recently admitted he couldn’t guarantee he would stay at Sporting amid the ongoing speculation over his future.

Chelsea also held previous interest in his services, with the former midfielder now one of the hottest managerial prospects.

Liverpool were also reportedly keen on Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi but appear to have moved away from the Italian.

German national team boss Julian Nagelsmann has also been linked, with the Reds eyeing top names for their next appointment.

Peterborough United owner Darragh MacAnthony backs Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna to be the next Liverpool boss and replace Jurgen Klopp

Whoever next takes the role at Anfield will have huge shoes to fill following the immense success under Klopp since 2015.

He has won every major trophy, including the Premier League and the Champions League, since he took over and reignited the club as one of the best in English football.

Klopp has established himself as a club legend on Merseyside and is now heading into his final run of games as boss, with another Premier League title up for grabs.

They next face Atalanta in the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Thursday night, live on talkSPORT.

  • ‘He doesn’t tick every box’ – Liverpool should have one key concern over Alonso

‘He doesn’t tick every box’ – Liverpool should have one key concern over Alonso

Liverpool should be wary of appointing Xabi Alonso as their new manager for one reason, according to Danny Murphy.

The Reds are on the lookout for a new boss after Jurgen Klopp’s shock announcement that he will leave his role as manager at the end of the season.

    4

Murphy insists their is concern over the appointment of AlonsoCredit: talkSPORT

One name in the frame is former Liverpool midfielder and current Bayer Leverkusen head coach Alonso.

The Spaniard, who made 210 appearances for the Reds, netting 19 goals, has taken the Bundesliga side from the bottom to the top of the German top flight.

His side is currently undefeated and five points clear of second-place and current champions Bayern Munich, whom they beat 3-0 in a top of the table clash.

Speaking on talkSPORT Drive, former Liverpool midfielder Murphy insists there is one concern over his potential appointment – much like Man United faced when Alex Ferguson left.

“I think in an ideal world, you would want a manager to come and take over from Jurgen Klopp to have a bigger body of work, even if he wins the Bundesliga.

“Like any footballer, you can have a purple patch, you can have a wonderful season, and vice versa in management.

“You want a manager coming in who has had a body of work, had success all over the place, and has every chance of doing what Klopp has done.

“Unfortunately, I don’t think that candidate is out there and stands out.

“So, what you do next, you go to the next box, which is to somebody who is potentially able to do that and has the capabilities.

“A bit like buying a good young footballer who looks like he is going to be a world beater.

Liverpool legend Didi Hamann outlines why Xabi Alonso is the perfect choice to replace Jurgen Klopp at the Reds!

“Alonso, at the moment, for what he is doing at Bayer Leverkusen, in the style in which he is doing, it looks like a super young coach with lots of qualities.

“He has a team playing for him; he’s got a nice style, is easy on the eye, very articulate, calm, and has been at Liverpool before.

“He ticks a lot of boxes, but he does not tick them all.

“The problem you have is that nobody does, especially who I can think of.

“That’s why I say I think Alonso is going to get the gig, and probably rightly so, in my opinion.

“Following Jurgen Klopp in any way is going to be difficult and a risk.

Alonso is no stranger to Liverpool fans who continue to adore him

“Managing Liverpool football club is very different from managing Leverkusen, because although they are a successful club, they are a much smaller club with less pressure, not even the biggest club in their own country.

“So, it’s a different pressure. Though Alonso has exceeded expectations, you have to suggest he is doing something really right.

“The thing is with Liverpool now, when Klopp goes, the hole that will be left, especially in the short term, is getting the fans on board, and they absolutely loved Alonso anyway.

“So, it is not just about his age; even if he were a bit older, did not have loads of trophies, and had been doing okay for more years, I would still believe he’d be a good candidate.

“The way he conducts himself as well, he is not really the Mikel Arteta and Klopp-type jumping up and down on the touchline.

“Maybe he will be by the time he gets to Liverpool and the stress gets to him!

“But I think everything about him screams of good things, and I don’t see someone else getting the job.”

Ange Postecoglou went from ‘joke’ to hero with ‘Angeball’ style that lit up Glasgow

Tottenham fans underwhelmed by Ange Postecoglou’s impending appointment may be wise to look at what happens when you back him.

The Greek-Australian had previous doubts around him upon his arrival at Celtic Park in 2021, but two years later he’s wiped them away to leave as a club icon.

A double last season season was followed by a treble this term, and now Hoops fans in Glasgow will be gutted to see Postecoglou depart, with personal terms said to be agreed.

And speaking in what was likely his last ever game with the club – winning the treble with a Scottish Cup final victory over Inverness – he was keen to remind everyone about the reaction to his arrival from Yokohama F. Marinos in Japan.

“Let’s not beat about the bush,” he said. “I was a joke when I was appointed.

“A lot of people made fun of my appointment, but the supporters for their own reasons put their collective arms around me and said, ‘no, he’s one of ours’.

“It was up to me then to repay that faith and trust and the reason they’ve felt so close to me and this team is while others mocked they stood behind me.”

Repay them he did, with talkSPORT host Alan Brazil even having to eat humble pie after calling the appointment ‘a wind-up’.

But how did the 57-year-old former Australia manager go from a joke to a likely Premier League regular? Well the answer will please Spurs fans.

For a fanbase yearning for attractive football after stints under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, Postecoglou’s admiration of Dutch football in 2021 will leave plenty of encouragement.

“Historically, in Australian football, there has been a Dutch influence,” he said ahead of a Europa League tie with AZ Alkmaar.

“Guus Hiddink took us to the World Cup in 2006 and since then we’ve had people from Holland and the Netherlands advising us.

“My origins, I was a massive fan of [former player] Johan Cruyff, massive fan of that Ajax team, my father was [too].

“That sort of led me to look at the aesthetics of football, rather than just the end result.

“I’ve always admired and been intrigued by it because, ultimately, we know that results are what matter in football.

“So having this thought process that maybe what it looks like is just as important as the result has always intrigued me.

“It’s finding that balance between creating something that’s beautiful to the eye, but also brings you success because otherwise you are just one of these unemployed, destitute artists that admires their own work, but don’t make a living.

“I just want everyone talking about the football we are playing. That still to me is the primary target because wherever I’ve been and I’ve done that, the rest of it has sort of cascaded into it.

“They are starting to and, if we keep doing that, the success we have will be great and for everyone to share. But I want it to be success built on something special.”

That statement ended up being fortelling, with Celtic’s attractive football earning five trophies in two years, putting Rangers back in their place.
