WWE star takes potshot at Spurs as special belts of football clubs are released

Tottenham Hotspur’s ongoing trophy drought was brutally highlighted by WWE superstar Drew McIntyre.

The north London club have regularly been the butt of jokes surrounding their failure to land a major trophy for the first time since 2008.

Ange Postecoglou’s men have one final shot at finally silencing their detractors after booking their place in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday night following a second leg win over AZ Alkmaar.

But for now, they remain an easy target for rival fans as their wait for silverware rumbles on.

Bizarrely, their most recent criticism has come from three-time WWE world champion McIntyre, who himself is an avid football fan.

The Scot has often displayed his affection for boyhood club Rangers and it appears the England vs Scotland rivalry is alive and well.

On Friday, WWE announced that it had released exclusive legacy title belts – priced at £425 – featuring the branding and colours of 13 European football clubs.

The featured teams included Manchester United, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Chelsea, West Ham and Old Firm duo Rangers and Celtic.

Also included were European giants AC Milan, Inter, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain.

But it was the inclusion of Tottenham that handed McIntyre too good of an opportunity to miss.

The 39-year-old knows all too well the importance of being an opportunist after claiming the Money in the Bank briefcase in 2024.

McIntyre brutally shared WWE’s post on X with the caption: “That’s the only title Tottenham have seen in years.”

Whilst not technically wrong, the wrestler sparked a huge debate in his comments section with fans either praising him or hitting the star back with some banter of their own.

Ironically, Tottenham could face Rangers in the Europa League final in May to break their trophy hoodoo.

The club’s have already met in this season’s league phase which saw Dejan Kulusevski score late on to earn the Premier League side a 1–1 draw at Ibrox.

With both clubs on opposite ends of the draw, a second meeting can only happen if both sides make it to the final in Bilbao.

Rangers saw off Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce in a tense penalty shootout on Thursday and will face Athletic Bilbao in the quarter-finals.

Last year, McIntyre was given the prestigious honour of being inducted into the Scottish Wrestling of Hall of Fame by Glasgow’s Lord Provost, becoming the first active wrestler to do so.

He was handed the honour prior to WWE’s Clash of the Castle premium live event which took place at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro in June.

“It’s pretty surreal to be the only active wrestler to be inducted into the Scottish Wrestling Hall of Fame,” McIntyre said.

“But it’s even more surreal that it happened in Ibrox and, even more so, on the weekend where I’m wrestling Scotland’s first ever PLE for the World Championship. It’s all my passions as a kid coming together as one.”

  • Tottenham coaches wanted Tuchel as manager before Postecoglou was hired

Tottenham coaches wanted Tuchel as manager before Postecoglou was hired

In an alternate universe Thomas Tuchel is managing in England again, but not the national team.

Instead, the German is in the dugout at Tottenham Hotspur while Ange Postecoglou is elsewhere.

Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, Tottenham great Jermain Defoe revealed why the staff in north London were enamoured with Tuchel before Postecoglou’s appointment in the summer of 2023.

And a revelation from his former Tottenham teammate Harry Kane, who spent a season under Tuchel at Bayern Munich, explains why that’s the case.

“I was in the Tottenham academy coaching for two years,” Defoe said.

“Before Ange got the job, I had a conversation with some of the coaches.

“We were actually saying, ‘Cor, if we got Thomas Tuchel here’. Because we’d heard in terms of his detail and his coaching, even speaking to Harry (Kane), his sessions and the detail that he gives the players and the energy and what he brings to the job, he said it’s unbelievable.

    “That’s what they say.”

Defoe also addressed one of the leading unfair criticisms surrounding Tuchel before he has even named his first England squad.

Tuchel’s appointment marked the first time England had been managed by a German. The 51-year-old also became the first foreign boss of the men’s team since Fabio Capello.

Some detractors believe England should be managed by an Englishman.

However, Defoe refuted the claim and believes the England role should be given to whoever is the best man for the job.

“I played under Sven (Goran Eriksson), Capello,” Defoe said.

“Not once did I ever think, ‘Capello is Italian’. I just thought, ‘This is Fabio Capello’.

“This guy’s come in with this presence and his CV spoke for itself and the players and the clubs that he’d managed.

“I thought, ‘This is the best man, one of the best out there, hopefully we can win with him in charge.’

“It’s the same with Thomas Tuchel.”

Tuchel is due to name his first-ever England squad on Friday as he whittles down his 55-man list to a squad of 26.

The former Chelsea boss also has the benefit of his first two games in charge being on home soil.

Tuchel’s first game in charge is a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Albania on March 21, with a clash against Latvia three days later with both matches taking place at Wembley.

England are also in the same group as Serbia, who they beat in their Euro 2024 opener last summer, as well as minnows Andorra.

  • I played with Ronaldo at Madrid but all-star Spurs team was greatest I played in

I played with Ronaldo at Madrid but all-star Spurs team was greatest I played in

Rafael van der Vaart spent only two seasons with Tottenham Hotspur but it was long enough to declare they were ‘maybe the best’ team he played in.

Van der Vaart moved to north London in 2010 from Real Madrid, where he played alongside a galaxy of superstars including Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Raul, Sergio Ramos and Xabi Alonso, to name five.

    3

Van der Vaart spent one season alongside Ronaldo at Real MadridCredit: Getty

Although he left the glamour of Madrid behind, he joined Tottenham at a time when they had numerous stars of their own.

Ledley King, Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Jermain Defoe were all on the club’s books prior to the Dutchman’s arrival.

In Van der Vaart’s second season, Scott Parker, Emmanuel Adebayor and Kyle Walker all joined to further strengthen Tottenham’s impressive squad under then-boss Harry Redknapp.

Even though the team recorded Premier League finishes of fifth and fourth in his two years at the club and failed to land any domestic or continental silverware, Van der Vaart waxed lyrical about the ‘fantastic team.’

“Before this interview, I was thinking about that time, you think, ‘Wow, that was maybe the best team I ever played in,’” Van der Vaart told talkSPORT Breakfast.

Van der Vaart’s first season at White Hart Lane coincided with his best goalscoring return in the league since the 2002/03 campaign with Ajax, as the Dutchman netted 13 times.

A primary reason behind the attacking midfielder’s impressive goal return was down to Redknapp and the legendary manager’s reluctance to shackle his attacking gem, and a telepathic understanding with Peter Crouch.

It’s why Van der Vaart looks back at his entire two-year stint at Tottenham as the time he felt the best on the pitch.

“I think you have different phases in your career,” Van der Vaart said.

“Of course, Ajax especially in the beginning. Then I moved to Hamburg and I had a great time.

The Dutchman formed part of a memorable Tottenham team alongside Modric, Bale and Defoe

“But when you look at team, quality, talent and potential … I think I had the best time at Tottenham.

“Also with Harry Redknapp of course, a coach that I really liked because he gave me so much freedom on the pitch.”

Tottenham could certainly do with someone of Van der Vaart’s ilk right now given the team sits a lowly 13th in the Premier League, with the Europa League the club’s only chance of silverware this term.

Should Ange Postecoglou’s side fall short in the Europa League, it would mark the 17th-straight season without a trophy.

As to what Tottenham can do to end a drought unbecoming of a team with their state-of-the-art stadium and training ground, Van der Vaart believed the club must stop overpaying for ‘normal’ players and instead should be prepared to fork out more for those who will take them to the next level.

“At the end of the day, I think Tottenham always tried to go to the next level, but the last step is the biggest,” Van der Vaart said.

Van der Vaart made 77 appearances and scored 28 times for Tottenham

    3

“Of course, you can build a new stadium and everything is perfect. If you compare it to my time, we were still on the Chigwell training ground and everything was smaller. White Hart Lane, which for me, was the best ambience I ever played in. Now, everything is big. You want to go to the next step and you don’t play like that.

“At the end of the day, they bought so many players for crazy money in my point of view. You can buy less players and buy better ones and pay a little bit more. But now these days, they pay money for normal players.”

Van der Vaart added: “At the end, it’s the talent of the group and in my days, we had so much talent it was unbelievable.”

Van der Vaart and the rest of the Tottenham faithful will have to wait until the summer to see whether Postecoglou and the club heed his advice about how to spend the transfer budget.

But a Europa League trophy would go some way to attracting a higher calibre of players and, at present, is the only way Tottenham feature in Europe next season given their position in the table.

Postecoglou’s side can take their first major stride to Europa League glory when they travel to AZ Alkmaar for the first leg of their round of 16 tie on Thursday, which you can listen to live on talkSPORT 2.

  • Keane’s reaction to Maddison jibe has Neville and Carragher in stitches

Keane’s reaction to Maddison jibe has Neville and Carragher in stitches

    Over to you, James Maddison.

The cheeky war of words between the Tottenham Hotspur star and Manchester United great Roy Keane has taken a fresh turn as the latter mocked Maddison’s trademark celebration in the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast.

    3

Gary Neville asked Keane for his thoughts on Maddison’s celebration against the Red Devils on February 16, as the Spurs ace shushed towards the camera after scoring the only goal of the match.

Maddison’s gesture was seen as a swipe in Keane’s direction after the United great questioned whether the seven-time England international was capable of stepping up when his team needed it.

    “Good on him,” Keane said.

“Yeah, absolutely no problem. I still go to what I said. I don’t think he does enough of that.

“But when he scored, I was at home with my cup of tea, and I went, ‘Good on you.’

“No problem. If people have a go at you, you answer them back.”

But it was Keane’s next comment that left the entire panel in stitches.

“I was hoping he was going to do the same the other day, but he was a substitute against Ipswich,” Keane said.

Maddison began Tottenham’s 4-1 win over the Tractor Boys on February 22 on the bench but managed to provide an assist for Djed Spence just 13 minutes after he came on.

Neville added: “James, he’s now monitoring your every move.”

Keane then stared down one of the cameras and mimicked Maddison’s trademark darts celebration, prompting more laughter from the rest of the group.

Arsenal great Ian Wright came to Maddison’s defence and said: “Just do your stuff James, because you can’t f****** win.”

Unfortunately for Maddison, he will have to wait until next Thursday to fire back at Keane having failed to impress in Spurs’ 1-0 loss to Manchester City on Wednesday.

Maddison was brought back into the starting line-up by Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou but finished with only a yellow card to his name after he produced a rugby-style tackle to stop Savinho on a counter-attack.

Erling Haaland‘s first half strike was all that separated the two sides as he took his league tally to 20.

The result leaves City in fourth on 47 points, one off of third-placed Nottingham Forest.

Haaland close to injury return against Spurs as Man City Guardiola issues update

Erling Haaland could potentially return for Manchester City’s trip to face Tottenham Hotspur, live on talkSPORT, on Wednesday.

The superstar striker was not part of the Man City squad as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to league leaders Liverpool at the weekend.

    3

Haaland has missed the last two games with a knee problemCredit: Getty

That absence came after Haaland played no part in City’s damaging Champions League loss to Real Madrid last week.

He’s been carrying a knee issue since he hobbled off against Newcastle on February 15 and hasn’t featured since.

Is Erling Haaland fit to play Spurs?

Man City boss Pep Guardiola is hoping that Haaland will have recovered in time to be part of his squad in North London.

Despite not being able to confirm the Norweigan’s fitness status, he had some positive words to say in his press conference.

Guardiola said on Tuesday: “Tonight, we will know it after training. I hope so but I don’t know yet.

“He feels better but the last two games he could not play. We’ll see tomorrow.”

So, Man City are waiting to make a final decision on Haaland until after their last training session before the game.

And that session has now taken place, with Haaland part of it and reportedly showed no signs of any discomfort.

Guardiola’s latest update comes after he revealed that his main man had been in training this week after scans came back positive.

Speaking following the loss to Liverpool on Sunday, he said: “His knee – the moment against Newcastle moved the knee.

Guardiola is hopeful that his main man will be back

    3

“Apparently, he’s not injured because the scans dictate that he’s fine, but he didn’t feel fine.

“I have the feeling it [his return] will be soon because he trained yesterday and made some really good movements, but he said he was not ready and we have to respect that.

“Hopefully he can be back for Spurs.”

Man City will want to have Haaland back to lead the line after showing a real lack of quality in the final third last time out.

They had a total of 16 shots against Liverpool, but only five hit the target and they struggled to test Alisson at all.

Haaland’s killer instinct in the box and elite finishing could have changed that, but he was forced out of the squad.

To have the 24-year-old back would bring some much-needed threat to a front line lacking that finishing touch.

Phil Foden played furthest forward at Anfield, but that was a huge change in striker profile, with City losing a focal point.

Omar Marmoush has also stepped in to cover Haaland, but again, he’s a totally different type of forward to his teammate.

If Haaland is unable to feature against Spurs, it would likely be Marmoush or Foden up front for City again.

talkSPORT 2 will have live exclusive coverage of the game from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with commentary coming from Nigel Adderley and former Chelsea defender Scott Minto.

Premier League midweek fixtures: talkSPORT brings you football bonzana

The Premier League action shows no sign of slowing down, and this week, you can follow EVERY game across the talkSPORT network.

We are straight into gameweek 27 with more midweek matches, and there’s plenty up for grabs as the top-flight approaches the run-in.

    5

The Premier League is serving us a great season

All 10 midweek fixtures will be on our network, bringing you every goal and all of the action as it happens.

And there are some very juicy ties indeed.

On Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur welcome Manchester City as Spurs look to do the double over the Premier League champions.

Ange Postecoglou‘s men thrashed Pep Guardiola‘s side 4-0 at the Etihad in late 2024 before enduring a terrible run of form.

    Read more on Premier League

However, with a few players back from injury, Spurs have won their last three league fixtures.

Meanwhile, City have slightly improved in recent weeks, but a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday showed just how far away they are from being back to their best.

Still, they are well in the race for Champions League football, and three points here would be huge.

Elsewhere, Arsenal travel to Nottingham Forest, knowing that the Tricky Trees can move just three points behind them with a win.

The Gunners’ title challenge for this season is all but over after a 1-0 defeat to West Ham at the weekend.

Liverpool then beat City to take an 11-point lead over Mikel Arteta‘s men.

It has been a season to forget for Guardiola

    5

It has been a season to forget for Guardiola

Of course, Arsenal players will insist the title race isn’t over, but it would require an almighty slip-up from Liverpool for this to even be a possibility now.

Instead, the Gunners just have to ensure they claim Champions League football and second place.

Meanwhile, Forest have lost their last two in the Premier League to Fulham and Newcastle, respectively.

But Nuno Espirito Santo will be encouraged by his team’s comeback at St James’ Park at the weekend, where they came from 4-1 down to narrowly lose 4-3.

Certainly, this won’t be an easy game for Arsenal.

Wednesday night also sees Newcastle United visit Anfield in a dress rehearsal of the Carabao Cup final at Wembley next month.

The Reds have one hand on the Premier League trophy now, but Arne Slot will want his side to keep being relentless.

The chance of a treble is there, but the Toon gave Liverpool a very hard game when they met earlier this season.

At St James’ Park, these two served up a thrilling 3-3 draw, and Eddie Howe‘s men will be looking to make a statement ahead of the Carabao Cup final meeting between the two later this month.

On Tuesday, we have Chelsea taking on Southampton, with the Blues looking to bounce back from their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.

There is a south coast derby between Brighton and Bournemouth, which promises to be full of goals.

Wolves are edging away from the relegation places, and they welcome Fulham.

Meanwhile, resurgent Crystal Palace host Aston Villa, with Unai Emery‘s side looking to close the gap on those above them chasing European football.

Wednesday night also sees Manchester United in action against Ipswich Town.

The Red Devils just about salvaged a 2-2 draw against Everton at the weekend, but the performance from Ruben Amorim‘s men was far from convincing.

Certainly, the Tractor Boys will go there feeling they can get something.

And the final game sees Brentford host Everton.

The Bees couldn’t stop winning at home in the first part of the season but are winless in five league matches at the Gtech, while Everton are finding some form under David Moyes.

And on Thursday, Graham Potter will hope to see West Ham build on their brilliant win over Arsenal, while Leicester must bounce back from being thrashed by Brentford.

Man United cash boost, Spurs identify Ange replacement, PL coach to Championship

Cash-strapped Manchester United could be set for a much-needed multi-million pound windfall – thanks to former striker Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood has been banging in goals for fun since leaving Man United to join Roberto de Zerbi’s Marseille last summer.

    3

The ex-England international’s hot streak of 14 goals in 22 games for the French outfit has alerted some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including the likes of PSG and Barcelona.

When United traded Greenwood with Marseille for £26.6miliion they insisted on an unusually high 50 per cent sell-on clause.

With the 23-year-old now valued at around £60m, that means United would bank in the region of £16.5m from any sale.

At a time when Sir Jim Ratcliffe is cutting costs to raise vital transfer funds, that money would come in very handy for struggling boss Ruben Amorim.

    Bournemouth stars (and boss) wanted

Bournemouth are braced for a summer battle to keep several of their star men, and manager Andoni Iraola!

The Cherries are enjoying the season of their lifetime and currently sit in fifth place in the Premier League, likely to be enough to secure a spot in the Champions League.

Their incredible rise up the table has not gone unnoticed with centre-back Dean Huijsen, who is believed to have a £50m release clause in his contract, attracting attention from Liverpool and Chelsea.

Left-back Milos Kerkez is another Cherries star on the radar of a number of top clubs, including Manchester United, along with fleet-footed forward Antoine Semenyo, who has admirers at Newcastle.

Then there is miracle-working gaffer Iraola, who talkSPORT understands would be at the top of Tottenham’s list if they parted company with Ange Postecoglou, who is under pressure with Spurs down in 12th.

With Iraola preferring to sign short-term deals and only contracted until the end of next season that could leave Bournemouth vulnerable, although sources close to the Spaniard say he is happy on the Dorset coast.

    Why Mitoma rejected Saudi revealed

Kaoru Mitoma is a rare breed in modern football, a player who puts ambition before money.

The Brighton winger was subject of a shock £74m bid from Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr in the final days of the transfer widow.

But even if the Seagulls were tempted to cash in on their Japanese international, which they were reluctant to do, talkSPORT has been told he immediately rebuffed the notion of moving to the Middle East.

That’s because the humble 27-year-old, who could have set himself up financially for life by linking up with Cristiano Ronaldo, has his sights set on one day playing in the Champions League.

What the Saudi interest has achieved is to strengthen Brighton’s bargaining position when an elite Premier League or European club do come calling by driving up his asking price.

After being compared to Arsenal’s Dutch maestro Dennis Bergkamp following his stunning goal of the season contender against Chelsea, there is every chance the big boys could come calling.

Spurs coach wanted by Championship club

Swansea could turn to Ryan Mason in their hunt for a new manager.

Tottenham assistant coach Mason was high on the Swans’ wanted list before they appointed Luke Williams in January last year.

And after deciding to give Williams the boot after a run of eight defeats from their last ten games, the ex-England midfielder still has admirers among the Welsh club’s hierarchy.

Mason also held talks with Anderlecht in October before deciding to stay at Spurs, so it remains to be seen if he is willing to leave now.

As talkSPORT reported on Monday, former Oxford boss Des Buckingham is also among the front-runners to replace the sacked Williams.

However, this notebook understands Russell Martin has no interest in a return to South Wales.

Ruben Amorim‘s side were beaten 1-0 by Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.

James Maddison‘s first half strike proved to be the difference in north London.

United struggled to mount a comeback, with Amorim having been forced to name eight teenagers on the substitutes bench.

The defeat leaves his side 15th in the Premier League, just three places above the relegation zone.

Dave did not mince his words as he called in to The Final Word following the final whistle.

He explained: “Well, I think I’ll hit the nail on the head. I said that there was two poor sides today. Yeah two very poor sides now.

“Listen Ruben Amorim is the right man for Manchester United, but the man needs backing. He’s not got any of these players in there other than the fullback [Patrick Dorgu] he’s brought in.

“He’s got no players that he’s had in there. I’d say something now that team is under pressure through Ratcliffe and these cronies.

“We need to get rid of them. If every Manchester United fan knows that these people need to get out of our club. Ratcliffe is b*****ed.

“I’m so upset at the moment about our club. Ratcliffe needs to go. Qatar needs to come in and offer the Glazers another deal to get rid of everything Ratcliffe, what 29 per cent isn’t he?”

Ratcliffe bought a minority stake in the club from the Glazer family in February 2024, with his INEOS group taking over football operations at Old Trafford.

The British billionaire has since overseen hundreds of redundancies in a bid to cut costs for the club.

However, results on the pitch have not changed even after sacking Erik ten Hag in October.

Dave continued to call for change at the club as he became increasingly emotional about the situation, almost breaking down in tears.

He continued: “What they need to do is to sort the debt out and to sort everything around that club.

“Because at the moment that club is toxic. It’s absolutely toxic and it needs people who love that club to sort that club out because we love that club.

Amorim has not been 'backed' by the club, according to Dave

“And I’m nearly brought to tears now. I’m upset because I’ve always loved that club.

“My dad brought me up through that club in 1974 and that club means the absolute world to me and at the moment everything is going wrong.

“And we need that club to be back to where it should be the Busby Babes and everything we need that club to be.”

With United already out of both domestic cups, the Europa League remains their only hope of silverware and European qualification this season.

Meanwhile, Amorim has hinted that the club will have to sell players to make signings in the summer transfer window.

United are also expected to be affected the most by Profit and Sustainability Rules being kept in place for another season.

‘Jumped on me’ – Ex-Arsenal star recalls nearly fighting with Spurs fan

Tottenham and Arsenal’s rivalry is legendary and can get a bit heated; just ask Emmanuel Petit.

The Frenchman represented the Gunners in numerous north London derbies, so he experienced first-hand just how intense they can be.

However, on one occasion, things went too far.

Petit spent three years with Arsenal and claimed the Premier League title in that time.

And while playing for the north London giants, the former French international nearly found himself in a fight with a Spurs fan.

Speaking exclusively to talkSPORT Drive about the incident, Petit recalled just how close he came to fighting a regular supporter.

When asked about derbies, he discussed the north London affair before revealing this scary story.

He said: “One day, I was driving back from the train station, and two different cars had an argument at the traffic lights, and they came out and started to have a fight.

“There was a big truck, and he was screaming at them, and I was next to them, and I thought they were taking a risk, so someone had to tell them something, so I jumped out of my car and told them to calm down.

“This guy recognised me and said, ‘you, shut up etcetera.’ I am not going to repeat what he called me.

“And I said, ‘what the f*** is wrong with you?’

“He said he was Spurs and got straight back into the truck, and I tried to open the window.

“I wanted to fight with him because I was peaceful, but the guy just jumped on me.

“He was insulting me, he was saying bad things about me.

“So, I was thinking to myself, ‘I am not a coward. If you want a fight, I am here’.

“So, this is exactly what it means.”

Emmanuel Petit calls for Ange Postecoglou to be sacked after Arsenal beat Tottenham in the North London derby

So, in another life, we could have seen stories about Petit fighting a Tottenham fan.

Of course, this is a very extreme example, but it does show the level of hatred between the two clubs.

This explains why former Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon can’t see Harry Kane joining Arsenal if he returns from Bayern Munich.

The Gunners are in desperate need for a striker after Kai Havertz was ruled out for the season, and the idea was floated about Kane returning to the Premier League to play for Mikel Arteta‘s men.

However, Lennon was having none of it, given that Kane is Tottneham’s record goalscorer.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, Lennon said: “I’m not buying that, not a chance in the world Harry Kane goes to Arsenal.

“I think he goes to a better club (when he leaves Bayern) or he finishes his career back at Spurs. There’s no chance he goes to Arsenal, can you imagine what that would do? (to the Tottenham fans)”

There are many great derbies and rivalries around England, all with their own history attached.

The north London derby is so important for both sets of fans and players.

On this occasion, the situation with Petit got a bit out of hand, with the Frenchman more than ready to start throwing digs, but thankfully, we avoided any tabloid-worthy situation.

Heung-Min Son put in awkward position by King Charles after Tottenham question

King Charles III left Tottenham captain Heung-Min Son in an awkward position during a short exchange between the pair.

The royal was in attendance at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium to highlight the club’s partnership with the NFL and its positive socio-economic impact on the local community.

Heung-min Son had a brief exchange with King Charles during his visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

On arrival, the King was greeted by locals before entering the stadium where he met men’s team captain Son and women’ s skipper Bethany England.

Although the monarch could only enjoy a short interaction with the South Korean, his line of questioning caused an awkward moment.

Son, accompanied by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy was asked about the club’s current plight.

The clip, that has since surfaced on social media, sees the King ask Son: “So who are you playing this weekend then?”

The Tottenham forward replied: “We are going to play against United… Manchester United. On Sunday”.

Charles then asked: “Have you got a good chance?,” to which Son responded with: “I hope so”.

The King probed further asking: “Is the team in good order at the moment?”

A sheepish-looking Son answered: “We are in a difficult moment but we are working hard.”

The hard-to-watch exchange saw Levy broadly smiling in the background as his captain did his best to entertain the King.

Son has been unable to reach his previous heights this season having netted just six goals in 21 Premier League appearances.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have struggled for form in a season hampered by ongoing injuries to key players.

Spurs are on a torrid run of one win in eight Premier League games while recent exits in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup have piled the pressure on Postecoglou.

Tottenham are 14th in the table and a whopping 16 points adrift of fourth placed Chelsea

Spurs’ objectives for the season were to break into the top four and secure a place in next season’s Champions League – something that now appears unlikely.

Their hopes of ending a 17-year wait for silverware now rest on success in the Europa League with Spurs currently the bookies favourites to win the competition.

Success in Bilbao in May would also see Postecoglou’s side claim an unlikely place in next year’s Champions League while the Australian would have kept his vow of winning a trophy in his second season.

If he is to steer Spurs to success this season then he will have to do it the hard way, and that means winning the fans over again.

Sunday’s FA Cup defeat at Aston Villa saw fans display their anger at Postecogolou while chanting for Levy to leave the club.

However, the former Celtic boss will welcome the imminent returns of defensive pairing Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven following injury.

In attack, Postecoglou should soon see summer signing Dominic Solanke return alongside long-term casualty Wilson Odobert.

The key to Spurs’ European hopes and Postecoglou’s long-term future lies on whether they can avoid recurring injuries in the business end of the season.
