I was a World Cup winner in same situation as Trent but stayed at boyhood club

Trent Alexander-Arnold is certainly not the first and won’t be the last player to depart his boyhood club.

However, when faced with a similar predicament, a German great took a different approach that caught an entire fanbase by surprise.

Shockwaves were sent through the football world on Tuesday when talkSPORT broke the news Alexander-Arnold has agreed to join Real Madrid in the summer on a free transfer.

Despite months of negotiations, the 26-year-old opted to move to Los Blancos next term, where he is expected to pen a five-year deal worth in excess of £220,000-per-week.

It will bring an end to the right-back’s 20-year association with the club, having joined Liverpool‘s academy in 2004 aged six.

Bastian Schweinsteiger had not been at Bayern Munich for as long as Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool when he found himself in a similar situation.

The 40-year-old first joined the Bavarians in July 1998 as a youth player before he made his first-team debut in November 2002.

It didn’t take long for Schweinsteiger to endear himself to the Bayern faithful thanks to his all-action displays in midfield.

Yet those same Bayern fans who loved Schweinsteiger were more than prepared to turn on him during the 2010/11 season.

The midfielder was out of contract in 2012 and a raft of European giants were ready to swoop.

Clubs including Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United were all credited with an interest in snapping up Schweinsteiger.

So Bayern fans could be forgiven for thinking the worst when, after Bayern had beaten St Pauli 3-0 on January 2 in 2011, Schweinsteiger took the microphone from the stadium announcer.

It seemed the supporters at the Allianz Arena had already made their minds up regarding Schweinsteiger as they showered him with boos and whistles before he even had the chance to speak.

However, the reaction changed instantly once they heard what Schweinsteiger had to say.

“I’ve been playing here at FC Bayern Munich for 12 years now,” Schweinsteiger said.

“And I wanted to tell you, I have extended my contract and will stay at FC Bayern until 2016.

    “Long live Bayern!”

Upon Schweinsteiger’s last line, the crowd erupted into loud cheers as their star midfielder kissed the Bayern badge.

Bayern fans were left stunned when Schweinsteger revealed he would stay at the club

Louis van Gaal, who was Bayern boss at the time, was delighted to have kept Schweinsteiger at the club.

“I’m a coach with long-term goals,” Van Gaal said.

“Therefore the new contract for Bastian Schweinsteiger is very important.

“It’s a very good sign that we managed to keep this world class player at our club.”

Schweinsteiger went on to play a remarkable 500 appearances for Bayern across all competitions before he departed to Manchester United in 2015.

The midfielder also played a leading role in Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph, where he played the full 120 minutes in the final against Argentina.

But had his famous moment on the microphone in January 2011 gone differently, who knows how the German great’s career may have turned out.

Justin Kluivert drops transfer bombshell on Liverpool-linked star

Bournemouth star Justin Kluivert has dropped a bombshell on teammate Dean Huijsen’s future that no Cherries fan will want to hear.

Andoni Iraola’s side have been one of the biggest surprise packages of the Premier League this season as the club sits just five points off the Champions League places.

The Cherries are also just one win away from an FA Cup semi-final berth as they host Manchester City in the quarter-finals on Sunday, live on talkSPORT.

Kluivert has been one of the brightest spots for Bournemouth this season with 13 goals and seven assists across all competitions.

Full-back Milos Kerkez has also shot to prominence with his barnstorming displays up and down the left flank along with his whipped crosses that cause plenty of havoc for opposition back lines.

But it is teenage centre-back Dean Huijsen who has arguably garnered the most attention from rival clubs.

The 19-year-old arrived on the south coast last summer from Juventus for a fee just shy of £13million.

However, his assured displays at the back and a recent maiden call-up for Spain have seen his value skyrocket.

The Cherries need no reminding they face a serious battle to keep Huijsen in the summer, especially given he has a £50m release clause in his contract.

But according to Kluivert, it appears Bournemouth’s players are already resigned to losing the teen as he made the worrying admission in an interview with MARCA on Sunday.

“I know that next year he won’t be with us,” Kluivert said.

There will be no shortage of clubs keen to snap up Huijsen in the summer.

talkSPORT understands Liverpool are one of the interested parties, especially since defensive pillar Virgil van Dijk is yet to commit to the Reds beyond this season.

Another European giant understood to be keeping close tabs on Huijsen is Real Madrid.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side has been hampered by injuries to key defensive players including David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger and Dani Carvajal throughout the campaign.

The depths of Los Blancos’ defensive woes were laid bare when midfielder Federico Valverde had to deputise at right-back during the second leg of their Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid.

A move to Liverpool or Real Madrid would represent a major step up in difficulty for Huijsen.

However, Iraola believes the 19-year-old will be more than capable of handling himself at that level.

When asked about Huijsen’s best attributes, Iraola said: “I think his mentality, his head.

“I think he’s confident. He is not afraid of marking any forward and I think he’s calm on the ball.

“He knows what he’s doing, he’s under control. Sometimes he will make mistakes like all the others, but there is always a reason for the things he does.

“And for someone that is 19, it’s really strange to find this at this level.”

Mathys Tel phones Harry Kane to give immediate reaction to Tottenham transfer

Harry Kane has revealed Mathys Tel was instantly taken aback at Tottenham upon his arrival.

Tel sealed a temporary switch to north London until the end of the season on deadline day, with Tottenham having the option to make it permanent.

    3

Kane had plenty of conversations with Tel prior to the teenager’s move to TottenhamCredit: Getty

The 19-year-old’s move came just days after he initially rejected a move to Tottenham, only to change his mind following a conversation with boss Ange Postecoglou over Zoom.

Although it was Postecoglou who got Tel over the line, he also spoke to Bayern marksman Kane about life at the club prior to the move being completed.

Few in modern football know Tottenham as well as Kane, especially since he is the club’s all-time leading goalscorer and sits behind only Alan Shearer with the second-most goals in Premier League history.

So it was only fitting the England skipper was one of the first people Tel called once his move was completed.

“He asked me [about Tottenham],” Kane told German outlet SPORT.

“When the deal was done, he texted me and told me how great the training ground was. He was very excited.

“I wish Mathys all the best. Hopefully he gets a lot of playing time. That’s what he needs. He needs to develop and experience the highs and lows on the pitch.

“I know Tottenham well, they will look after him well. Hopefully he does well there.

“He should show what he can do at the highest level.”

Tottenham beat out a number of their Premier League rivals to Tel’s signature, including Manchester United and Chelsea.

Kane hopes Tel can showcase his immense talent at Tottenham

    3

Kane hopes Tel can showcase his immense talent at Tottenham

But the Red Devils’ interest cooled after they refused to pay the requested £6.6million loan fee while Tel was concerned over how much playing time he’d get at Chelsea given their depth in attacking positions.

Tel suffered a losing start to his Tottenham career as he made his debut in the 4-0 drubbing against Liverpool in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie.

The 19-year-old came on in the first half to replace Richarlison after the Brazilian went off with an injury.

Tel could make his second appearance for Postecoglou’s side on Sunday in the fourth round of the FA Cup as they travel to Aston Villa.

He will certainly hope the switch to north London can kickstart his 2024/25 season as he failed to score in any of his 14 appearances under Bayern boss Vincent Kompany.

The Frenchman also featured just eight times in the Bundesliga this term, with two of those being starts.

But it appears Kompany’s side won’t miss Tel’s explosive dribbling and pace as they picked up a 3-0 win over Werder Bremen on Friday.

Kane struck twice from the penalty spot while Leroy Sane also got on the score sheet to put Bayern eight points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.

The English superstar’s goals were his 20th and 21st in the German top flight this term, which meant he had now netted 20 or more league goals in a single season for the eighth time in his career.

Inside Rashford’s exit from Amorim’s message to the money Aston Villa will pay

Marcus Rashford was told he wouldn’t get game time if he remained at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim, talkSPORT understands.

Rashford has completed a loan move to Aston Villa until the end of the season after the England international totally fell out of favour under the new Red Devils boss.

talkSPORT understands that United will get a minimum of 75 per cent of the 27-year-old’s salary, which is in excess of £350,000-a-week.

This could rise up to 90 per cent, depending on performance-based bonuses.

Villa also will have an option to make the move permanent in the summer and would cost them around £40million.

Rashford was exiled by United manager Ruben Amorim this season, not featuring in any of the last 12 games, making the bench once and being excluded from the matchday squad every other time.

It’s been a brutal situation for the forward, who will hope to get some game time at Villa Park.

The England international was one of a number of options under consideration by Villa to replace Jhon Duran, who joined Al Nassr in a whopping £65million deal on Friday.

Rashford has attracted interest from all over Europe in the January window after his struggles in Manchester this campaign.

AC Milan, Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund were said to be interested, but Rashford’s wages presented a key stumbling block.

Clubs had been told they will either have to cover the majority of his salary, in excess of £350,000-a-week, or come up with a compromise deal with United.

United were reluctant to make too big a contribution after Rashford publicly stated his desire to leave by admitting he was ‘ready for a new challenge.’

After receiving a huge fee for Duran, Villa have offered to pay a huge chunk of his wages, making the deal possible.

Chelsea’s Joao Felix and Paris Saint-Germain forward Marco Asensio were also being monitored by Villa, with sporting director Monchi confirming the club held interest in both.

However, Monchi conceded a deal for either of those targets could be difficult to pull off due to the hefty finances involved.

Rashford’s last appearance for the Red Devils was a Europa League fixture against Viktoria Plzen on December 12.

The 60-cap England international was frozen out by Red Devils boss Amorim following his admission in December he was ‘ready for a new challenge.’

Amorim was especially critical of what he believed to be a lack of effort from Rashford on the training ground.

The United boss even claimed he would rather have Jorge Vital, his 63-year-old goalkeeper coach, on the bench over Rashford, who he said ‘doesn’t give the maximum every day’.

“Imagine a talent like Rashford, our team should be so much better with him – but he has to change,” Amorim said.

“If he changes, we are more than welcome [to include him] – and we need it. But in this moment, we have to set some standards. We are waiting for Rashford, if he wants it really bad.

“You [the media] want to make it personal, I have nothing against Marcus, but I have to make the same rules for everybody.

“We need goals, we need [players who can go] one against one, we need threat in the final third.”

Rashford’s fall from grace under Amorim represents a major contrast from how he performed early into his tenure as he scored three goals in the United boss’ first two league games in charge.

Rio Ferdinand: Marcus Rashford has no way back at Manchester United

Now that he has completed his loan deal to Villa, Rashford has reiterated his desire to play football.

Writing on Instagram after the deal was confirmed, he said: “I would like to thank Manchester United and Aston Villa for making this loan deal happen.

“I was lucky to have a few clubs approach me but Aston Villa was an easy decision – I really admire the way that Aston Villa have been playing this season, and the manager’s ambitions. I just want to play football and am excited to get started.

“I wish everyone at Manchester United all the best for the rest of the season.”

Villa will make a large contribution to Rashford‘s wages while performance-based bonuses can move that higher.

Discussions over a buy option – which would see Rashford leave Old Trafford permanently – are also ongoing.

The 27-year-old forward has been exiled by United manager Ruben Amorim this season, not featuring in any of the last 12 games.

Now, it looks increasingly likely Villa will provide him with a way out to play regular football again.

Villa have until 11pm on Monday to complete the move for Rashford as that is when the Premier League’s January window slams shut.

They face a trip to Wolves on Saturday at 5:30pm, meaning all of Emery’s focus will be on that game for now.

However, after that, the Spaniard can spend two days going all out to try and get Rashford’s loan over the line.

The 21-year-old Colombian completed his switch to Al Nassr on Friday, and will link up with Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mane in Riyadh.

Duran’s move came after Villa rejected an offer from Arsenal for fellow striker Ollie Watkins, with boss Unai Emery insistent he would not be sold.

talkSPORT understands Rashford is one of a number of options under consideration by Villa to replace Duran as they now look to add another forward.

  • Dorgu says goodbye to Lecce fans and teammates as Man United move looms

Dorgu says goodbye to Lecce fans and teammates as Man United move looms

Patrick Dorgu has bid farewell to his Lecce family in style ahead of his imminent move to Manchester United.

The Red Devils have agreed a £29million deal with the Serie A outfit for Dorgu, with the defender due to fly out for his medical on Saturday.

    4

But Dorgu got to enjoy one last game for Lecce after their request to name the left-back in their squad for one final time was granted by United.

Dorgu was an unused substitute in Lecce’s 3-1 win away to Parma, as a double from Santiago Pierotti and a first-half strike from Nikola Krstovic helped the team to its sixth league win this term.

Despite not featuring in the contest, all eyes were on the 20-year-old after the full-time whistle knowing his future lay elsewhere.

Dorgu was captured waving goodbye to the travelling supporters in emotional scenes.

As if any further confirmation about what’s to come was needed, Lecce boss Marco Giampaolo stated the youngster is indeed bound for Manchester.

“It’s true, Patrick Dorgu will be flying to Manchester on Saturday,” Giampaolo said.

“He’s a fantastic player and guy. He always did his best for us.

“I didn’t play him tonight as his mind could be already there, Old Trafford.”

Provided there are no issues with Dorgu’s medical, the Danish international will be the first signing of the Ruben Amorim era at United.

Dorgu was a main target for Amorim, evidenced by the fact United had two bids rejected by Lecce before they eventually got their man at the third time of asking.

Amorim anticipates Dorgu will be an ideal fit for his 3-4-2-1 system which relies heavily on wing-backs providing width on the flanks.

Dorgu also provides a solution to United’s longstanding woes at left-back due to the long-term unavailability of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

In Shaw and Malacia’s absence, Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot – two right-backs by trade – have been forced to fill in on the left side of defence.

The 20-year-old’s pending move to United is the latest step in his rapid rise having made his senior professional debut against Lazio last season.

He went on to make 34 appearances in all competitions for Lecce in his debut campaign, scoring twice and providing one assist.

Dorgu’s impressive performances were rewarded with an international debut for Denmark in a Nations League fixture against Switzerland on September 5.

The Dane marks the third high-profile investment in United’s backline this term following the arrivals of Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt for a combined £102m in the summer.

Liverpool star clarifies reason for celebration amid transfer speculation

Harvey Elliott set social media abuzz with his celebration against Lille and now we know why.

The 21-year-old scored the winner for Liverpool as they overcame Lille 2-1 to all-but secure top spot and guarantee a place in the Champions League last-16.

    5

Elliott’s winning strike sparked a curious celebrationCredit: Getty

Elliott’s goal came in the 67th minute when he unleashed a shot from outside the box that took a deflection off of Ngal’ayel Mukau’s foot and flew into the net.

However, the 21-year-old generated more headlines for what he did following his goal.

As he wheeled away to celebrate, Elliott made a talking gesture with his hand before he made a cutting movement across his throat.

Some suspected it was transfer-related given Elliott had been linked with a move away from Anfield in recent weeks.

A switch to Brighton and Borussia Dortmund had been mooted in various reports.

However, Elliott confirmed he has no desire to leave Liverpool any time soon and revealed his celebration was intended to demonstrate that.

When asked by Amazon Prime presenter Gabby Logan what his celebration meant, Elliott responded: “I think it’s pretty clear, to be honest.

“I’m not leaving. I said it in an interview the other day, this is my team. This is my club.

“I’m a massive fan and we’re in a great position so far this season.”

Logan suggested Elliott’s gesture was as if to say ‘shut up’, to which he agreed.

Elliott added he ‘didn’t really see’ much of the speculation surrounding his future and had only learned of it through his friends.

“It’s (speculation) always going to happen in January and especially after being out for a long time and not really playing as much as I’d want to,” Elliott said.

    “But, you know, that’s football.”

Elliott’s strike, albeit deflected, against Lille was just his second goal in 12 appearances for Liverpool this term.

The 21-year-old has had a disrupted campaign having sustained a broken foot in September.

As a result of the injury, he has missed 14 games for the Reds.

But when he has been available, Elliott has started just twice.

Those came in a third round FA Cup clash against Accrington Stanley and a Carabao Cup quarter-final match against Southampton, in which he scored.

Despite the fierce competition for places in Liverpool’s starting line-up, Elliott confirmed he’d spoken with Reds boss Arne Slot regarding his lack of minutes.

However, he remains upbeat and knows he has to take his chance with both hands whenever an opening in Liverpool’s team emerges.

“We’ve had those conversations but it’s not just me,” Elliott told reporters after Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Brentford, where his second-half cameo played a key role in spurring the team on to victory.

“There are other lads in the team who maybe haven’t played as much as they want and are probably doing the same thing.

Elliott has held conversations with Slot over his future but remains keen to fight for his place

“I just have to keep working hard, keep trying to help the team out whenever I’m needed and just wait for my opportunity.

“I don’t expect to come in and play straight away. I want to help my team out as much as I can and the club and give everything I can.”

Liverpool need just a point in their final Champions League league phase match, where they face Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, on January 29 to confirm top spot of the standings.

Elliott will hope to continue his run of strong performances when Liverpool host Premier League strugglers Ipswich Town on Saturday.

  • Arsenal wanted to sign me but Newcastle money was too tempting – I was naive

Arsenal wanted to sign me but Newcastle money was too tempting – I was naive

Kieron Dyer could have been a part of Arsenal’s Invincibles had he not rushed into a decision as a young footballer.

The speedy winger was the talk of English football after progressing through the ranks at Ipswich Town during the late 90s.

After failing to win promotion in the 1998/99 campaign, interest was building in Dyer who told talkSPORT there were other offers on the table when he completed a £6.5million move to Newcastle.

Speaking to Drive, Dyer explained a move away from his boyhood club was inevitable having come so close to the Premier League in a team with highly-rated players.

He said: “We had Richard Wright, myself, James Scowcroft and David Johnson – really good young players so the director’s box was full of scouts and it was always in the paper that we were probably going to be leaving that summer, so it was kind of expected.

“I remember coming back from pre-season and [manager] George Burley pulls me into the office and says, ‘We haven’t received any offers that we want to accept so if you start the season with us you have to get your head down’. I said, ‘Yeah, of course.’

“Then we finished training and someone said ‘the gaffer wants to see you in his office’ and I go there and he says, ‘We’ve just accepted an offer for six and a half million, so you need to go now.’

“I had to drive to Stansted airport and meet my agent before flying to Newcastle.

“But if I’d have been a bit more wise I probably wouldn’t have ended up in Newcastle.

“At the time, Arsenal wanted me with Arsene Wenger, I spoke to David O’Leary and Leeds on the phone, I spoke to Harry Redknapp who was manager of West Ham at the time.”

Signed by Ruud Gullit in 1999, Dyer ended up spending eight years at St James’ Park between 1997 and 2007 where he made 250 appearances for the club.

While clearly enjoying his time in the north east, the midfielder failed to win a single piece of silverware, something that can’t be said for the Gunners in that period.

Arsenal enjoyed a true period of dominance under Wenger in those years, winning two Premier League titles, three FA Cups and as many Community Shields.

It was also an era that goes down in football history, with Wenger’s side being dubbed ‘The Invincibles’ due to going the entire 2003/2004 Premier League season without losing a game.

While he got to play with record scorer Alan Shearer among others at Newcastle, at Arsenal he could lined up alongside Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires to name a few.

Reflecting on the other interested clubs, he said: “If I’d have known what I know now, I’d have said, ‘I want to wait a bit’ and seen if Arsenal or Leeds would have increased their bid because I had the chance to be a part of the Invincibles squad.”

Laughing at his youthful thinking, he added: “Because you’re so young and naive – plus my agent told me what Newcastle were offering – it was like, ‘Ooff we go’, sort of thing.

“You don’t really know because you have no experience.”

Dyer had, at times, a strained relationship with Newcastle, but showed plenty of times why the club paid so much money for one of the most talented young players in the country.

He joined West Ham in 2007 and retired from playing in 2013 after short spells at QPR and Middlesbrough in addition to a stint back at Ipswich.

While Arsenal haven’t won a league title since 2004, they are currently competing for the top-flight for a third consecutive season.

Though they look set to miss out once again with leaders Liverpool sit points clear, with Arne Slot’s men also having a game in hand.

As for Newcastle, they are in contention to secure Champions League football for the second time in three years with the Toon sitting in sixth spot – two points off the top four.

  • Douglas Luiz keen on swift Premier League return as two clubs eye up swoop

Douglas Luiz keen on swift Premier League return as two clubs eye up swoop

Douglas Luiz is willing to return to the Premier League less than seven months after his departure from Aston Villa, talkSPORT understands.

And the Brazilian isn’t short of interest, with two clubs in the English top-flight keeping tabs on his current situation in Turin.

Luiz joined Serie A giants Juventus from Villa last June for a cool £42.3million, with Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea moving in the opposite direction.

However, Luiz’s transfer has not gone to plan.

Of the 26-year-old’s 16 appearances across all competitions this term, just three of them have been starts.

Juventus boss Thiago Motta has instead preferred a midfield pivot of Manuel Locatelli and Khephren Thuram while Teun Koopmeiners operates as the attacking midfielder.

As a result of his lack of game time, talkSPORT understands Villa and Manchester City are open to offering Luiz an exit route.

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, chief football correspondent Alex Crook shed light on the transfer situation surrounding the Brazilian.

“He’s (Luiz) keen to come back to the Premier League,” Crook said.

“I think his old club, Aston Villa, are monitoring the situation.”

Crook added he checked some time ago whether City, who had Luiz on their books before selling him to Villa in 2019, were in the market for him.

The Premier League champions played down talk of a move, but Crook revealed the situation has changed.

“Since then, I have been told on good authority they are looking for a defensive midfielder,” Crook said.

Crook added: “I think it’s that midfield area Pep Guardiola himself admitted to me after they drew at Brentford that it’s a problem for them.

“If it’s an easy deal to do, then I can see that City would be interested. Certainly I think it’s one to keep an eye on.”

City have been in desperate need of defensive midfield reinforcements since Ballon d’Or winner Rodri tore his ACL against Arsenal earlier this season.

With the Spaniard gone for the season, Guardiola has had to rely on Mateo Kovacic as his primary option at the base of midfield.

Ilkay Gundogan is also on City’s books, but at age 34, the German is not the phenom he once was.

Given City are still competing on three fronts this season, Guardiola is under no illusion he needs some fresh faces.

City have already made a big splash in the January window, as talkSPORT understands they are closing in on an agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt for forward Omar Marmoush.

The club has also agreed a £33m deal plus add-ons with Lens for centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov.

City’s activity in the transfer market follows their improved run of form as they are unbeaten in their last six games across all competitions.

Guardiola’s side have also smashed home a whopping 23 goals in that space, including a 6-0 mauling of Ipswich Town on Sunday.

City will look to keep their impressive performances as they travel to take on Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
