  • Keown’s brutal Arsenal warning as icon reveals how title will be harder to win

Keown’s brutal Arsenal warning as icon reveals how title will be harder to win

Martin Keown recognises a Premier League title is within Arsenal’s grasp, but their brilliance will be forgotten if they remain the perennial bridesmaid.

The Gunners are on track for a third consecutive season in which they have finished second in the Premier League as they remain 12 points behind Liverpool with nine games remaining.

    5

Arteta and Arsenal have fallen agonisingly short in the title race for the last two yearsCredit: Getty

The first of Arsenal’s runners-up placings saw Mikel Arteta‘s side finish five points behind Manchester City despite sitting first up until late April.

The gap narrowed to two points between the clubs in the 2023/24 season as City pipped the Gunners to the post via a sensational 23-game unbeaten stretch.

City’s underwhelming performance this campaign presented a prime opportunity for Arsenal to finally break the mould and land their first Premier League crown since the Invincibles season of 03/04.

Instead, it’s been Liverpool who seized the moment under first-year coach Arne Slot.

With Slot’s side storming to the title instead of Arsenal, who have steadily built in recent seasons, Arteta must wonder if his time will ever come.

But, as Keown pointed out, the road to success can sometimes be a ‘long and winding’ one, as he found to be the case during his playing days at Highbury.

Most importantly, the Gunners great believes all the building blocks are in place for Arteta’s side to end the 20-year title drought – it just needs that ‘X-factor’ to provide the ‘icing on the cake’.

“Some people are lucky and the road to success is a straight line,” Keown told talkSPORT.com.

    “Not for this Arsenal group.

“I’ve been in a similar situation. Three years on the bounce we finished behind Manchester United and you have to ask yourself the questions. You have to have a strong group and I think Arsenal have got that. The foundations are there.

Keown believes Arsenal are only a few players away from winning the Premier League

“And then of course it’s the calibre of the players. There will be purchases in the summer. But it’s been tricky for the back-end of the season where you’ve had four or five strikers that are not available. Then it looks like you should have bought one, which is kind of a hindsight situation.

“But looking back to last year, Arsenal were scoring buckets full of goals. So that seems to be the obvious areas, in the creative wide positions and down the middle, I’m sure that’s where Arsenal will invest in the summer.

“There’s a lot of good about Arsenal. A lot of teams would look at Arsenal and say, ‘I wish we had their defence, their goalkeeper and their midfield’.

“It’s just the icing on the cake now is getting those special players, that X-factor player to finish things off and win titles.”

Arteta came under fire for not purchasing an extra forward during January as season-ending injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus left the Gunners light on attacking reinforcements.

Star winger and key goalscorer Bukayo Saka‘s long-term injury has also proved damaging while Arsenal lost twice in the league during Martin Odegaard‘s seven-game absence following an ankle issue picked up while on international duty in September.

Gabriel Jesus tore his ACL during Arsenal's FA Cup defeat against Manchester United

The Gunners have been heavily linked with a big-money move for Newcastle superstar Alexander Isak, with many supporters hopeful he is the answer to their striker woes.

Benjamin Sesko is another who has been mooted with a move to the Emirates as Arsenal re-ignited their interest in the Slovenian in January, although a mid-season move proved complicated given RB Leipzig were reluctant to sell.

talkSPORT also revealed Arsenal are one of multiple Premier League teams interested in Lille’s Jonathan David, who will be a free agent at the end of the season.

At the very least, the Gunners can dangle the carrot of playing in the Champions League for a prospective new signing thanks to what is looming as a third-straight second place finish.

However, as Keown rightly pointed out, history only remembers the victors.

Martin Keown calls William Saliba a ‘Rolls Royce’ as key stat proves why Arsenal star is ‘top of the tree’

But it is in those near-misses that the team develops its mental resolve to go one better, something they must do sooner than later given their rivals are only going to strengthen across the board.

“You get nothing for second,” Keown said.

“No-one even remembers but the person who comes second. You compare it to other sports, say you get a silver medal in the Olympics, but in football, in the Premier League, you get nothing.

“Nobody really wants to be second place. In a cup final, you get a runners-up medal.

“We were four or five times in second place, but you don’t feel like you’re second-best, and that’s the thing. You need strong characters.

“And this is where you develop that kind of veneer to say, ‘No, I’ve had enough of this, I want to go the next step and we can do it, we’re capable’. You have to retain that belief.

“It’s not an easy road because everybody else will strengthen now and get even better. City will come back.

“So Arsenal need to make sure now that the next two or three signings are key for their future success.”

Arteta knows he cannot afford to whiff on any new signings in the summer window.

If he does, it could mean Arsenal’s best window of opportunity for Premier League titles has closed.

Justin Kluivert drops transfer bombshell on Liverpool-linked star

Bournemouth star Justin Kluivert has dropped a bombshell on teammate Dean Huijsen’s future that no Cherries fan will want to hear.

Andoni Iraola’s side have been one of the biggest surprise packages of the Premier League this season as the club sits just five points off the Champions League places.

The Cherries are also just one win away from an FA Cup semi-final berth as they host Manchester City in the quarter-finals on Sunday, live on talkSPORT.

Kluivert has been one of the brightest spots for Bournemouth this season with 13 goals and seven assists across all competitions.

Full-back Milos Kerkez has also shot to prominence with his barnstorming displays up and down the left flank along with his whipped crosses that cause plenty of havoc for opposition back lines.

But it is teenage centre-back Dean Huijsen who has arguably garnered the most attention from rival clubs.

The 19-year-old arrived on the south coast last summer from Juventus for a fee just shy of £13million.

However, his assured displays at the back and a recent maiden call-up for Spain have seen his value skyrocket.

The Cherries need no reminding they face a serious battle to keep Huijsen in the summer, especially given he has a £50m release clause in his contract.

But according to Kluivert, it appears Bournemouth’s players are already resigned to losing the teen as he made the worrying admission in an interview with MARCA on Sunday.

“I know that next year he won’t be with us,” Kluivert said.

There will be no shortage of clubs keen to snap up Huijsen in the summer.

Huijsen has quickly become one of the most wanted defenders on the planet

talkSPORT understands Liverpool are one of the interested parties, especially since defensive pillar Virgil van Dijk is yet to commit to the Reds beyond this season.

Another European giant understood to be keeping close tabs on Huijsen is Real Madrid.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side has been hampered by injuries to key defensive players including David Alaba, Antonio Rudiger and Dani Carvajal throughout the campaign.

The depths of Los Blancos’ defensive woes were laid bare when midfielder Federico Valverde had to deputise at right-back during the second leg of their Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid.

A move to Liverpool or Real Madrid would represent a major step up in difficulty for Huijsen.

However, Iraola believes the 19-year-old will be more than capable of handling himself at that level.

When asked about Huijsen’s best attributes, Iraola said: “I think his mentality, his head.

“I think he’s confident. He is not afraid of marking any forward and I think he’s calm on the ball.

“He knows what he’s doing, he’s under control. Sometimes he will make mistakes like all the others, but there is always a reason for the things he does.

“And for someone that is 19, it’s really strange to find this at this level.”

Man United cash boost, Spurs identify Ange replacement, PL coach to Championship

Cash-strapped Manchester United could be set for a much-needed multi-million pound windfall – thanks to former striker Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood has been banging in goals for fun since leaving Man United to join Roberto de Zerbi’s Marseille last summer.

    3

The ex-England international’s hot streak of 14 goals in 22 games for the French outfit has alerted some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including the likes of PSG and Barcelona.

When United traded Greenwood with Marseille for £26.6miliion they insisted on an unusually high 50 per cent sell-on clause.

With the 23-year-old now valued at around £60m, that means United would bank in the region of £16.5m from any sale.

At a time when Sir Jim Ratcliffe is cutting costs to raise vital transfer funds, that money would come in very handy for struggling boss Ruben Amorim.

    Bournemouth stars (and boss) wanted

Bournemouth are braced for a summer battle to keep several of their star men, and manager Andoni Iraola!

The Cherries are enjoying the season of their lifetime and currently sit in fifth place in the Premier League, likely to be enough to secure a spot in the Champions League.

Their incredible rise up the table has not gone unnoticed with centre-back Dean Huijsen, who is believed to have a £50m release clause in his contract, attracting attention from Liverpool and Chelsea.

Left-back Milos Kerkez is another Cherries star on the radar of a number of top clubs, including Manchester United, along with fleet-footed forward Antoine Semenyo, who has admirers at Newcastle.

Then there is miracle-working gaffer Iraola, who talkSPORT understands would be at the top of Tottenham’s list if they parted company with Ange Postecoglou, who is under pressure with Spurs down in 12th.

With Iraola preferring to sign short-term deals and only contracted until the end of next season that could leave Bournemouth vulnerable, although sources close to the Spaniard say he is happy on the Dorset coast.

    Why Mitoma rejected Saudi revealed

Kaoru Mitoma is a rare breed in modern football, a player who puts ambition before money.

The Brighton winger was subject of a shock £74m bid from Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr in the final days of the transfer widow.

But even if the Seagulls were tempted to cash in on their Japanese international, which they were reluctant to do, talkSPORT has been told he immediately rebuffed the notion of moving to the Middle East.

That’s because the humble 27-year-old, who could have set himself up financially for life by linking up with Cristiano Ronaldo, has his sights set on one day playing in the Champions League.

What the Saudi interest has achieved is to strengthen Brighton’s bargaining position when an elite Premier League or European club do come calling by driving up his asking price.

After being compared to Arsenal’s Dutch maestro Dennis Bergkamp following his stunning goal of the season contender against Chelsea, there is every chance the big boys could come calling.

Spurs coach wanted by Championship club

Swansea could turn to Ryan Mason in their hunt for a new manager.

Tottenham assistant coach Mason was high on the Swans’ wanted list before they appointed Luke Williams in January last year.

And after deciding to give Williams the boot after a run of eight defeats from their last ten games, the ex-England midfielder still has admirers among the Welsh club’s hierarchy.

Mason also held talks with Anderlecht in October before deciding to stay at Spurs, so it remains to be seen if he is willing to leave now.

As talkSPORT reported on Monday, former Oxford boss Des Buckingham is also among the front-runners to replace the sacked Williams.

However, this notebook understands Russell Martin has no interest in a return to South Wales.

  • Man United have second bid rejected for left-back as club want staggering fee

Man United have second bid rejected for left-back as club want staggering fee

Manchester United have had a second offer worth £27million for Lecce wing-back Patrick Dorgu rejected, talkSPORT understands.

The clubs will continue talks this weekend with the aim of reaching a compromise deal.

    4

Dorgu has been eyed by Tottenham and ChelseaCredit: Getty

This comes after an opening bid of £23m was rejected, with the Italian club holding out for a transfer fee of around £35m.

Dorgu joined Leece in 2022 from Danish FC Nordsjælland, to the tune of just £168,000 [€200,000].

Initially joining the Serie A side’s Under-19s squad, he spent just one season with the youth team before being promoted to the senior squad and made his first-team Lecce debut in August 2023.

In the one-and-a-half years since his senior debut, the 20-year-old has made 56 appearances, scoring five goals and providing two assists.

His performances have also seen him rewarded with four caps for the senior Denmark national team.

And Lecce are now looking to make huge profit off the starlet, as they play hardball over a £35m valuation of a player they bought for less than £200,000 three years ago.

United head coach Ruben Amorim is aiming to land his first transfer since his appointment in November 2024.

As Man United sit 13th in the Premier League, it is clear the squad needs new additions to revive their season.

Following an expensive summer window bringing in Leny Yoro [£58.9m] and Matthijs de Ligt [£42.9m], owners Ineos are much more reserved this time around and are looking to offload the likes of Antony and Marcus Rashford, who are on big wages, before splashing the cash.

But to secure Dorgu’s signature, Man United must do so this window otherwise other interested parties may return.

Chelsea have registered their interest previously and the Dane is a self proclaimed fan of the Blues who would consider it ‘a dream’ to play at Stamford Bridge.

At Sporting Lisbon Amorim often played a 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 where the wing-backs are arguably the most crucial players.

Tasked with stretching the pitch by being high and wide, it allows for space to be created inside.

Not only that, they need to function as an attacking weapon able to deliver crosses and directly contribute to goals.

Dorgu as someone who has played multiple games as a left-sided wing-back and in theory fills Amorim’s desire.

Diogo Dalot has often played in that position despite not being either a natural attacker or left footed player.

Dorgu only cost Lecce £168,000 when they signed him in 2022 - now they want £35m for him

Tyrell Malacia since his return from injury has featured there occasionally while Luke Shaw continues to be sidelined with a muscular issue.

Fans will grow impatient if results do not turn around but Dorgu could be the start of a new chapter of Amorim ball.

It was a system that took Manchester City by storm when they lost 4-1 to Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League earlier this season with Amorim at the helm.

Tomori could make England return as four Premier League clubs consider move

Tottenham and Newcastle are considering a January swoop for defender Fikayo Tomori, talkSPORT understands.

West Ham and Brentford are also keen on the former Chelsea centre-back amid his recent struggles at AC Milan.

    4

Tomori was a regular for the Italian giants after signing in January 2021, initially on loan from the Blues before a permanent move was completed.

However, he has made only six starts in Serie A this season and has made just three substitute appearances since October 6.

In the last ten Serie A matches, Tomori has managed just 13 minutes on the field.

Spurs have experienced major shortages in defence in recent weeks with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven both out injured.

It’s meant young midfielder Archie Gray has had to deputise at centre-back in the last five Premier League games which has seen Spurs ship 13 goals.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is also said to be eyeing a move for Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

A move to Spurs would see him compete for a starting spot with Guglielmo Vicario, who’s currently sidelined with an ankle injury.

The experienced Fraser Forster has played in his absence, but has conceded 15 goals in seven league outings.

Newcastle have been on the lookout for a new centre-back in recent windows having tried to sign Crystal Palace and England star Marc Guehi in the summer.

The Magpies had their advances rebuffed by Palace despite putting in a club-record £65million bid in for Guehi.

It’s also been reported that Newcastle were looking to bring Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah to St James’ Park in exchange for Anthony Gordon, however talks broke down.

Tomori could represent a more likely for Newcastle, although the player is contracted at Milan until June 2027.

Meanwhile, West Ham and Brentford are in the market to bolster their backline having both conceded 35 goals from their 19 Premier League outings this term.

Tomori rose through the ranks at Chelsea’s esteemed Cobham academy and made his senior debut in 2016.

The 27-year-old featured 27 times in total for the west London club before he left for Milan, with whom he won the Serie A title in 2022.

The Canada-born defender has five senior England caps to his name – his last coming in a Euro 2024 qualifier against Malta in November 2023.

Antonio Rudiger reveals Arsenal star would be his dream transfer to Real Madrid

Antonio Rudiger has revealed he would love one of Arsenal’s star men to come join him at Real Madrid.

The two-time Champions League winner showed his admiration for William Saliba and said the French centre-back would be his dream signing for the Spanish giants.

    4

The 23-year-old has continued to be a rock for Mikel Arteta’s side, exuding confidence and calmness when on the ball and defending one-on-one.

Arsenal have three clean sheets in the Premier League from six games, and have not conceded any in two Champions League matches.

Appearing on the Inside Scoop podcast Rudiger, who joined Los Blancos in 2022 and has won seven trophies, showed his admiration for the Gunners’ rock at the back.

When asked what defender he would sign for Real Madrid, the ex-Chelsea player replied: “I say William Saliba.

“I’m very happy with my centre-back partner [Eder] Militao because he also came from a big injury and he’s getting back to his best, but there’s so many games, so we would rotate.

“To have Saliba… it would be great.”

The Germany international was full of praise for Saliba’s partnership with Gunners teammate Gabriel Magalhaes, naming them as two of his top three centre-backs right now.

“Saliba and Virgil van Dijk and I like Gabriel from Arsenal as well,” he continued.

“I just enjoy, for example if you see Arsenal, the two centre-backs playing together for two years and now they’re doing an amazing job.

“The transformation from Arsenal that was before and now, those two are the pillars of it. You have Gabriel, the more aggressive leader and Saliba, this brother plays clean.

“He looks like a silent leader.”

The 2022/23 campaign saw the rise of the duo with Saliba’s injury arguably being the reason why Arsenal’s title challenge derailed.

Last season the Gunners came awfully close to ending their 20-year drought but lost the Premier League on the final day after grinding out 18 clean sheets – the most in the top flight – 15 of which came when Saliba and Gabriel started as a pair.

Darren Bent argues that Kai Havertz has now become Arsenal’s ‘most important’ player

The two have continued to grow and have arguably formed the best defence in the league alongside the likes of Jurrien Timber and Ben White.

Mikel Arteta has formed a side that is well respected defensively across Europe – a reputation that was boosted by their 2-0 victory against PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Nabbing Saliba will be a hard and expensive task for any interested clubs, as he signed a four-year deal with Arsenal in July 2023, expiring in 2027.

A move to Madrid would probably break the transfer record for a defender, currently held by Josko Gvardiol who moved from RB Leipzig to Manchester City for £77.6million in 2023.

Yes, Real Madrid have an abundance of money, but Rudiger may be out of luck as Saliba is committed to Arteta’s project.

Speaking in an interview with Arsenal in September he said: “I still have goals and ambition because I haven’t won anything. I’ve had some good seasons, but you need to win some trophies and that’s what I want to do with Arsenal and the national team.”

When asked for the secret of his partnership with Gabriel, he replied: “There’s no secret, I’m good, he’s good. We both speak French and we play now in our third season together.

“We know each other so well and it’s a pleasure to play every game with him. We grow together because he’s young as well, so it’s really good to have him by my side.”

Zubimendi now ‘regrets’ Sociedad stay – but Liverpool fans make same joke

Martin Zubimendi reportedly ‘regrets’ staying at Real Sociedad, but some Liverpool fans think they already have a better midfield option.

Zubimendi emerged as a key transfer target for the Reds this summer, but he rejected a switch to Anfield to remain at Sociedad.

    4

The LaLiga outfit informed the midfielder that he would have to pay his own £51million buyout clause, while it is claimed their manager Imanol Alguacil wooed him with a charm offensive to stay put in the Basque Country.

However, it now appears as though Zubimendi has had a change of heart amid Sociedad losing four of their first six league matches.

As reported by Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo, English media have claimed that the 25-year-old ‘regrets’ staying at the club.

While Zubimendi stayed, Sociedad did cashed in on two of their other key players in the summer, with midfielder Mikel Merino signed by Arsenal and defender Robin Le Normand joining Atletico Madrid.

It is claimed Zubimendi now wants Liverpool to try and sign him again when the January transfer window opens.

The defensive midfielder had made 194 appearances for Sociedad, with nine goals and seven assists, and won Euro 2024 with Spain in the summer.

Despite his quality, Liverpool fans on social media have claimed that Ryan Gravenberch would still be a preferred choice even if Zubimendi signed.

Taking to X, one said: “Don’t think we need Zubimendi, Gravenberch has been outstanding this season.”

“Zubimendi does not get into this Liverpool team. No chance he gets in front of MacAllister or Gravenberch! Szoboszlai plays a completely different role, so he doesn’t get in ahead of him either. Zubimendi could be a great squad player,” added a second.

A third wrote: “If Zubimendi really wants to go to Liverpool and the club accept it, I hope he’s the second choice after Gravenberch.”

Another said: “Gravenberch needs a back up and Zubimendi is a good fit. There’s a reason he’s a backup to Rodri in Spain. He could be that for Gravenberch too.”

Gravenberch has enjoyed an excellent start to life under fellow Dutchman Arne Slot at Liverpool this season, having started every game.

His performance in their 3-1 Champions League win over AC Milan on Tuesday night was rewarded with the Player of the Match award.

Adrian Durham rips into Arne Slots tactics after historic loss to Nottingham Forest

The Netherlands international has lined up alongside Alexis Mac Allister in the Liverpool midfield, a duo that are proving to work well together.

Should the Reds decide to reignite their interest in Zubimendi, he would add to the already stacked amount of talent in their squad.

However, it remains to be seen if he would be able to claim a spot in the starting XI, given how well they have played so far under their new boss.

Liverpool have impressed in every game so far this season aside from their surprise 1-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, where Slot came under fire for his tactics and substitutions.

Antony rejects move, PL clubs keen on ex-Liverpool star, costly Newcastle call

Antony rejected the prospect of a move to Turkey to stay and fight for his Old Trafford future, talkSPORT understands.

Both Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce and Galatasaray were sniffing around the Manchester United flop as the Turkish window closed last Friday.

But the Brazil international made it clear he wanted to stay at United and prove he can yet justify his £82million price tag.

Antony, 24, has featured in just one of United’s four Premier League games so far this season after coming on as an 89th minute substitute in their 2-1 defeat at Brighton last month.

He has scored 11 goals in 83 matches since United made him the second most expensive signing in their history when he joined from Erik ten Hag’s old club Ajax in the summer of 2022.

    Return for Reds hero?

Former Liverpool defender Joel Matip is keen to seal a move back to the Premier League.

Anfield fan favourite Matip, who turned 33 in August, is available as a free agent after being released by the Reds at the end of last season.

West Ham are among the clubs considering a move for Matip, whose services have also been offered to Wolves and Fulham.

The Cameroon international has 150 Premier League appearances to his name and was part of Liverpool’s 2019/20 title winning side.

He would also bring huge European experience to a club, having made 54 appearances in the Champions League and 19 in the Europa League.

He was part of the Reds side that was crowned European champions in 2018/19 and was runner-up in 2021/22, while also lifted the UEFA Super Cup in 2019.

    No Hayden, no cry

Isaac Hayden’s hopes of playing at the 2026 World Cup have been dealt a blow after being left out of Newcastle’s Premier League squad.

Hayden hasn't played for Newcastle in three years, but failed to secure a loan move away from St James' Park in the summer

Hayden, who has been on the books at St James Park since 2016, making more than 150 league appearances, is one of a number of British-born players that recently-appointed Jamaica boss Steve McClaren would like to call up for the Reggae Boyz.

But it remains to be seen if McClaren will pick Hayden knowing he cannot play any club football until January at the earliest.

The 29-year-old is the only senior Newcastle player not to be included in the 25-man list submitted on Friday, with the expectation he would secure a loan move earlier in the transfer window.

Hayden has not made a competitive appearance for the Magpies since December 2021, having since spent time on loan at Championship clubs Norwich and Queens Park Rangers, as well as Belgian side Standard Liege.

Top clubs keen on Saints starlet

Southampton are braced for a battle to keep teenage sensation Tyler Dibling.

The 18-year-old made an eye-catching first Premier League start against Manchester United on Saturday by tormenting Diogo Dalot and winning the penalty that Cameron Archer saw saved by Andre Onana.

England under-19 ace Dibling was already on the radar of clubs including Newcastle, and Saints are aware he will attract attention if he continues to excel.

Dibling left Saints briefly for Chelsea in 2022 before returning to the south coast after failing to settle.

The Exeter-born winger is under contract until the summer of 2026 and Saints have an extra year’s option included in the deal.

Eze wanted by giants, Newcastle sweat over futures of key men, Arsenal’s bargain

Crystal Palace are braced for a summer battle to keep hold of England ace Eberechi Eze.

Palace owner Steve Parish has publicly admitted he was shocked at the lack of interest in Eze during the transfer window.

Eze impressed as an impact sub during England’s run to the final of Euro 2024 and, while plenty of clubs were linked with an interest, no firm approaches were made for the 26-year-old.

But that is likely to change come the end of the season, with Manchester United and Tottenham among the clubs who plan to track Eze closely across the course of the campaign.

Manchester City also hold historical interest in Eze, although their main targets appear to be Germany duo Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala, with a double Bundesliga raid a distinct possibility.

Eze is understood to have a release clause of £68million that kicks in at the end of the season.

Arsenal strike gold with Sterling deal

Warring Chelsea owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali will be watching from behind the sofa when Raheem Sterling makes his Arsenal debut in Sunday’s north London derby.

Sterling, Boehly’s first signing as interim sporting director, swapped London clubs in the final hours of transfer deadline day.

Initial indications suggested Arsenal and Chelsea were splitting the England star’s £325,000-a-week wages down the middle for the duration of his season-long loan.

However, sources close to the deal have since confirmed to talkSPORT that Arsenal are paying just 30 per cent – leaving Chelsea to pick up the tab for the remaining £12m-a-year in a move believed to be driven by Eghbali.

Arsenal will be laughing all the way to the bank if Sterling gets back to anywhere near his top form.

The 29-year-old is determined to prove he can still cut it at the top level after his Stamford Bridge nightmare, where he was frozen out just two years after his £47.5m move from Man City.

    Pressure is on for Mitchell

It has been a turbulent introduction to life as Newcastle’s new sporting director for Paul Mitchell, who is now under pressure to convince two big-name stars to commit their futures
    to St James’ Park.

Mitchell has come under fire from fans after failing to get the signing of Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi over the line.

Meanwhile, his disparaging comments about the club’s previous transfer dealings have irked both predecessor Dan Ashworth and current manager Eddie Howe.

Mitchell has the chance to get back in supporters’ good books by making sure the Magpies keep hold of star striker Alexander Isak and England winger Anthony Gordon.

talkSPORT reported in April that Newcastle had offered Isak a pay rise to fend off interest from clubs including Arsenal, but that deal remains unsigned.

Meanwhile, Liverpool retain a strong interest in Gordon having come close to signing the boyhood Everton player for £70m in June.

    Uncertain futures

Ben Chilwell and Sergio Reguilon are among the players who face an anxious wait to see if they will be eligible to play in the Premier League during the first half of the season.

Clubs have until Friday to submit their 25-man squads following the end of the transfer window, and anybody over the age of 21 not included would have to wait until January to be re-registered.

Both Chilwell and Reguilon have already been omitted by Chelsea and Tottenham, respectively, for their upcoming European campaigns, so their prospects of making the cut look bleak.

Their best hope could be a move to Turkey, where the transfer window remains open until the middle of next week, with Reguilon playing under Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho at Tottenham.

  • Ten Hag target vetoed, Arsenal transfer blow, Newcastle not giving up on Guehi

Ten Hag target vetoed, Arsenal transfer blow, Newcastle not giving up on Guehi

Marc Guehi’s links with a move away from Crystal Palace will not go away anytime soon, and this time there could be competition.

Eagles chairman Steve Parish has been applauded for rejecting Newcastle’s advances for Marc Guehi, but is braced for a fresh fight to keep his star defender in January and next summer.

Newcastle were confident of prising Guehi away from Selhurst Park after tabling an offer worth a club record £70million deal, only for Parish to up his asking price to £75m at the 11th hour.

The Eagles’ stance was helped by the fact Guehi, who has captained Palace in their first three Premier League games, was not actively pushing for the move.

However, talkSPORT has been told Guehi is in no rush to extend contract, which expires at the end of next season.

Not only does that open the door for Newcastle to return with a fresh offer, but will put the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea on alert.

    Ten Hag transfer request denied

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag was blocked from re-signing Sofyan Amrabat by the club’s new hierarchy.

Ten Hag presented a case to bring back Amrabat, who had a mixed loan spell last season before impressing in the shock FA Cup final win over Manchester City, but sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox decided to go in a different direction.

talkSPORT understands Everton also explored a move for the Morocco international late in the transfer window, but he has since signed for Fenerbahce on loan from Fiorentina.

United spent £200m on five new face this summer, bringing in Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte, and Ten Hag is understood to be fully on board with Wilcox and Ashworth leading their recruitment after the under-pressure Dutchman took a lead role in previous windows.

    Still waiting…

Southampton have been left sweating on whether Ajax completed the paperwork to sign Kamaldeen Sulemana on time.

The Ajax hierarchy believe they got the loan deal over the line seconds before the Dutch window closed on Monday.

But they are awaiting approval from FIFA to ratify the Ghana international’s move to Amsterdam.

If it goes through, there is a £17m buy option included.

Southampton splashed out on a club-record fee of £22m to sign Sulemana from Rennes in February 2023, but he has been a huge disappointment at the club having managed just two goals in 44 appearances.

    Wolves star staying put

Arsenal target Dan Bentley is set to sign a new contract at Wolves.

The Gunners were keen to sign Bentley throughout the transfer window to help with their quota of homegrown players.

However, Wolves were reluctant to lose Bentley, who is expected to be number two behind new signing Sam Johnstone – ahead of Jose Sa.

Wolves are ready to trigger the two-year extension in Bentley’s contract, which is up at the end of the season.
